CrossWalk Community Church Those who have lived in our community for several years will remember the site of CrossWalk Community Church on Richmond Road in Norge as the former Music Theatre of Williamsburg. The church was able to purchase and move into the location three years ago and has since continued growing. Recently they have added a satellite location at the Regal Cinema 12 in New Town on Sunday morning, to reach more people. “We thank God every day for those who built this (the music theater) space,” said the Rev. Mark Morrow, pastor. “Just before we moved in, we were five years old and only running about 250 people. But because we did not have a permanent address, some people probably thought we were unofficial as a church. However, when we moved into the theater three years ago, our numbers quadrupled.” Morrow said the church’s proximity to Interstate 64 has allowed CrossWalk to become a “regional” church rather than a neighborhood church. He said the people who worship at the church are committed to reaching out to each other and beyond. “We acknowledge what Romans 12:4-5 and 1 Corinthians 12:12, 27 say about a local congregation–it is a body,” Morrow said. “So as each individual came and partnered with our mission, they brought with them their unique body part. At CrossWalk, everybody has a ministry function.” The Easter extravaganza “The Living Passover” is an example of the church’s mission to bring the gospel to others. “We serve close to 10,000 people each spring from several neighboring states during that event,” Morrow said. He added that the church’s huge back-to-school ministry helps at-risk, low-income children. “None of those ideas were in the plans a few years ago in my living room,” he said. “But as people have come with their skills and passions, and have been given permission to find fulfillment in serving God with them, the reach and influence of CrossWalk continues to expand.” COM

Morrow has become active within the community and finds great satisfaction reaching out to people. “I try to find out what God is doing in a person’s life and then attempt to encourage it,” he said. “I want to influence more and more people in this community to become fully-devoted followers of Jesus Christ, to find their God-given destiny and pursue it with all their heart.” Morrow said the church continues to consider future programming and expansion. “We are literally bursting with vision,” he said. “God is a dynamic, creative God who is far from static. But like Mary, mother of Jesus, we quietly ponder those things in our hearts. None of our aspirations will ever distract us from our primary reason for existence, which is loving and serving.” ––Ann Efimetz

Sal’s By Victor recently re-opened in the Williamsburg Shopping Center. The popular restaurant owned by Victor Minichiello had been closed for nearly a year after a fire gutted the building in July of 2009.

Minichiello plans a grand reopening celebration sometime soon to thank all those who supported and helped him rebuild the beloved restaurant. “We are so thankful for the people who supported us,” Minichiello said recently. “Without all the people who supported me, I would be no where right now. People helped me and I appreciate every one of them.” Longtime patrons of Sal’s will still recognize the restaurant, which features the same menu that has become a Williamsburg tradition. “I have the same menu and the same prices that I had before,” Minichiello said. The menu offers a wide variety to chose from ranging from traditional pizza and pasta to chicken and seafood. There’s also a selection of vegetarian dishes. The new restaurant features a variety of colorful artwork and warm earth tones throughout. The goal is to make the environment friendly and home-like for the customers. A new function room has been added to the restaurant allowing people to host birthday parties, business functions or other special occasions. Minichiello said that many of his staff that worked in the first restaurant has returned. So far feedback from the community and from visitors has been positive, while everyone gets used to the new place. “It is an old place, but it is still a new place for us,” he said. “We have some new staff and some original staff. Our goal is to make people happy and provide good food and good service.”

Garden-Flags When you walk in the door of Garden-Flags on Monticello Avenue, you will be greeted with a cornucopia of color from vibrant flags, spinners and wind socks. The store, which is entering its second year, also features an array of items including stained glass, kites, wind chimes and unique gifts. Among the store’s newest editions are holiday wreaths and flower arrangements that have a look of the real thing. According to store owner Nancy Saltz, people have enthusiastically responded to the store, visiting from all over the U.S. and abroad when they are in town. “We exist because of how people feel about Williamsburg,” Saltz said recently. “People love Williamsburg. We had someone come in here from Australia who drove here from Washington D.C.” Saltz and her daughter, Anne, are on hand to provide one-one-one service to customers. Customers come in inquiring about flags which run the gamut from traditional to whimsical. The store also carries a line of military flags, which Anne Saltz said are popular in our area. While perusing the store, don’t be surprised if you are greeted by store pet, Bonnie. The dog seems to be as popular as the inventory when it comes to customer satisfaction. “Some people come to the store just to see Bonnie,” Nancy Saltz said. The website www.garden-flags.com offers the chance for people to view some 2,000 different styles of flags and other items. For added convenience, locals or those who know they are going to be in the area, can request a store pick up to save on shipping costs. Anne Saltz said that the bright colors and often amusing or eye-catching designs complement the home, yard or garden. “It makes everything look so much more cheerful to have flags out,” she said. Step into history What would it be like to participate in the vote for independence which occurred in the Capitol at Colonial Williamsburg? The program “Revolutionary Points of View,” invites the audience to be privy to a debate about the issue of independence through the stories of a patriot, a loyalist and a neutral party. “The program is a recreation of the May 15 vote for independence,” said Tom Hay, program director. “The goal of the program is to put the guest in the moment of the vote for independence and make them feel they are there, and are aware of all the risk and the excitement for a vote for independence brings.” Hay said that in order to achieve that goal, the audience gets an “interactive history lesson,” to bring

F

them up to date on what has been happening in the colony. “Then three quick scenes depict various people grappling with making the choice for independence,” he continued. “And the final third of the program is the debate itself.” Hay said people are encouraged to stand up and join the debate. Audience members are given cards with quotes that they are encouraged to read. “Or they can say it in their own words,” he said. “We encourage them to be as creative as they want.” Then there is a call for the vote. “If there is one ‘nay’ then the the resolution is defeated,” he explained. “It had to be unanimous. It only takes one to prevent the vote for independence, and we recreate it as best as we can.” Hay said the program resonates with the audience and he said he typically receives enthusiastic feedback from guests who attend. “It obviously touches something deep in many of our guests,” he said. “I have worked most Colonial Williamsburg night programs and this is one of the few that we have people who leave giving us heartfelt thanks for putting this on.” The actors who participate take on a variety of roles in the production. Antoinette Brennan portrays Catherine Rathell a milliner in town who went back to England at the beginning of the revolution. “She is one of three characters who step out and tell about how the politics and events of the day affect her as an individual,” Hay explained. A rotating staff, typically Robert Weathers or Cash Arehart participate as do Mike Luzzi or Hay. The hope is more people will attend the program and gain a deeper appreciation of the events that went into the shaping of our country. “We are recreating the debate on the very spot where the debate occurred in the first place,” he said. “We try to personalize a great event in history.” In September, the program will be presented Wednesdays at 7 and 8:30 p.m. at the Capitol. HISTORY

First school for free An ordinary house at 524 Prince George St. may have contributed to American history. It is widely known that during the 18th century, a building at the College of William & Mary was the Bray School for free and enslaved blacks. But the structure was lost over the years among building moves and campus growth. Terry Meyers, an English professor, believes he’s found it, the oldest surviving African-American schoolhouse in the nation. “It’s a pretty difficult thing to prove,” he said. “How do you go back and prove that a building was used for a specific purpose at a specific time?” The discovery could counterbalance the college’s role in slavery. Last year the Lemon Project set out to reconcile William & Mary’s involvement with slavery. “What’s really much more significant was the college’s involvement with black education,” Myers said. In 1760 Benjamin Franklin was appointed to the board of a charitable organization in London that was looking to build schoolhouses in the colonies. He suggested Williamsburg. “When Franklin came in contact with the president of the college and the faculty of the college, what he found was a concern for and engagement with the religious education of blacks,” Meyers said. The revelation about the Bray School hit Meyers while he was doing research at the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library of Colonial Williamsburg. Reports linked a house leased to the Associates of Dr. Bray by one Dudley Digges. Meyers shared his study of the structure with sevWWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

43

eral historians, including a former William & Mary student with a master’s in architectural history. Another mystery is the age of the house. Tree ring studies may help. “When that house is moved,” he said, “that’s when folks from Colonial Williamsburg can get involved and hopefully pick that house apart bit by bit and determine how old it is.” An architectural dig could also prove the authenticity. The house was originally located at the corner of Prince George and Boundary, where Brown Hall stands today. Meyers believes a grassy area between the building and Merchants Square may verify the site. “If there are any artifacts, I believe they’d be there.” ––Susan Robertson

Barbara Gustafson Linda Lucas Soon after Barbara Gustafson became a Master Gardner in 1999, she became involved in providing a therapeutic gardening program to older adults and those dealing with special needs. Through the mentorship of Diane Relf of the department of horticulture at Virginia Tech, Gustafson launched a pilot program at Woodhaven assisted living facility at Williamsburg Landing in 2000. “I had told Dr. Relf that I had this idea for therapeutic gardening,” Gustafson said recently. “She became a supportive mentor of the program from that time forward.” From there, the program took off. Several volunteers became involved in helping Gustafson in her goal to present the program. In 2003, Linda Lucas became a Master Gardener and she soon became cocoordinator with Gustafson. The women have enjoyed watching the program thrive as the number of programs offered have increased. “We have run programs in diverse facilities,” Lucas said. “We started out with assisted living facilities and then went into facilities for those with memory impairment. Now we go to places like Eastern State Hospital and the United Methodist Church’s Respite Care.” This month, Lucas and Gustafson have organized a daylong symposium, “Healing through Gardening.” It will be presented at the James City-Williamsburg Community Center and will introduce the topic to caregivers, professionals, school staff members and those who may be interested in becoming a program volunteer. It will cover the benefits of providing therapeutic gardening to older adults or anyone who is challenged by a disability. Workshops will run the gamut from “Easy to Grow Vegetables” to “Flexibility with Container Gardening.” WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

47

Relf will be the keynote speaker at the event. Gustafson said that therapeutic gardening reaps several benefits for those who participate. Older people who may have lost their independence appreciate the ability to participate in an activity that they control. “Planting a garden and letting it grow allows you to feel that you are in charge,” she said. “The person feels like they have some control in their life.” “It keeps them anticipating the future,” Lucas added. “They plant a seed and then they see what is going to grow.” The women said the responses from those who participate are enthusiastic. “We are very much appreciated,” Gustafson said. “It would be hard to overstate the comments we have received. For some they say it is their reason for living.” Linda said presenting the program has become her main interest and one she will continue championing in the future. Gustafson agreed, calling it her ‘passion.’ “You don’t stick with something for ten years unless it is a passion,” Gustafson said. ––Ann Efimetz

HEALING THROUGH GARDENING SYMPOSIUM The event is scheduled 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Wednesday Sept. 22 at the James City-Williamsburg Community Center. There will be workshops throughout the day. The event will be followed by an optional tour of the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. Registration is required by Sept. 8 www.jccwmg.org or e-mail barbara-sg@cox.net. Forms are also available at the Historic Triangle Senior Center, Williamsburg Regional and James City County Library.

Greek Festival comes home St. Demetrios Hellenic Center opens The Williamsburg Greek Festival has a new, permanent home. This month’s festival, scheduled Sept. 24-26, will be held at the Saint Demetrios Hellenic Center on Mooretown Road. The $2.7 million center has been under construction since June 2009 and has been recently completed. A grand opening is scheduled as part of the festival. Proceeds from past four Greek Festivals have benefited the building initiative which

will eventually include a 6,600 sq. foot sanctuary. There are plans to break ground on the sanctuary by the end of the year. The Hellenic Center houses the Paparis Banquet Hall, which will seat 450 people, and be available for use by the community. “We want to rent out it out to the community for weddings and other functions,” said George Prassas, a member of the church council. The 11,000-sq.ft center also houses the Vlahakis Education Center. That will allow for meet-
