Capitol Landing Green Jim Bennett, the vice president of Jamestown Management Company, the managing entity for Capitol Landing Green recently answered questions about the new community being constructed on Capitol Landing Road. When did the idea for Capitol Landing Green come about? The idea began in 2008 with preliminary discussions with City of Williamsburg planners and culminated with the approved design of 16 single family homesites including a community green framed by the renovation of two turn-of-the-century homes salvaged from the existing site. Has construction started? Site construction is nearly complete. Renovation of the two turn-of-the-century homes is well underway with their completion due late summer and fall. New home construction began this spring with the first new home scheduled to be delivered this fall.

with first floor living in each house and the low City of Williamsburg tax rate. What is one of the best-kept secrets of the community? Each home is crafted to meet the buyer’s needs. Unlike most new home construction, we will completely tailor the home interior and floor plans to accomplish the client’s dreams. How many models are there to choose from? There are 5, each with alternate elevations. These homes range in size from just under 1,600 square feet to about 2,700 square feet. Most of the homes feature garages. Prices start in the 320’s.

warmer, quieter house, efficient gas furnaces and air conditioning, tankless gas hot water heaters, 10 foot ceilings downstairs and 9’ ceilings upstairs, hardwood, ceramic flooring throughout the first floor, and granite counters in the kitchen and master bath. What’s the best part of your job? Meeting people and completing the overall vision of the project are equally the most appealing aspects of marketing and selling Capitol Landing Green. The project appeals to people of many different backgrounds at different points in the lives. Helping people from many different walks of life realize their dream homes while allowing us to complete the overall project vision is rewarding on many different levels.

And amenities? – Ann Efimetz

Wall construction yielding 50% greater wall insulation for a

When is the estimate the build out? The other 13 homes are being built as contracts for each home are written. We expect construction on all the homes to be complete in about three years. What is most appealing to people about Capitol Landing Green? Obviously, location, location, location. Equally important are low-cost maintained yards, the quality of the arts and crafts inspired energy efficient homes, large porches front and rear along 6

Elizabeth Beebe Elizabeth Beebe, the senior director of membership and wellness at the R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA has a busy job helping people find out more about the programs offered and helping them become more physically fit. She recently answered a few questions about her position. How long have you been at your job? Since September, 2010. Prior to joining the staff here, I was involved in marketing and financial development for an independent YMCA in northwest Indiana. What do you like the best about your day-today? The interaction with our members, staff, and community leaders is definitely what I enjoy the most. I love seeing members who’ve lost weight and can 12

now enjoy playing with their children and meeting families who’ve become stronger as a result of spending more time together at the Y. What are some of the challenges? Our facility was built for 1,700 membership units. Today, our Y has grown to over 3,000 units. As exciting as this is, we are in great need of more space for programming. What are some of the things people may not know about the YMCA and its programs? Folks don’t realize the Y is a charity. So part of what I do for the Y is educate the community and even our members about the YMCA’s ability to impact the lives of people right here in WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2011

How does the YMCA figure into the overall health of our community? The Y is committed to strengthening the community with wellness programs for individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and incomes. The Y makes it possible for everyone to afford a healthier, happier and overall better life. With summer coming, what are some of the things the Y can offer folks? From June 6-27 we will be waiving our membership joining fee which saves families up to $100 and individuals up to $50, depending on the type of membership they are seeking.

together and workout. Our aquatic center has six lap lanes, a family pool with a waterslide, two warm water therapy lanes, and a whirlpool. Summer camp starts June 20. What does the future hold for you and your position at the Y? As young families emerge in the community, we will be creating new programs for children and families. Also, we have recently developed an exercise program for individuals who may not be able to independently operate selected weight equipment, cardio equipment, perform fitness routines, use the pool or certain group exercise classes, an opportunity to maintain a healthy spirit, mind and body by allowing their caregivers to attend and assist them without having to pay for any additional fees like they would with a personal trainer.

What else can people expect? The Y provides families a comfortable place to enjoy time

Geoff Geiling and Neil Paine When Geoff Geiling and Neil Paine see the fruits of their labors manifested in the lives of Nicaraguan artists, they feel as though they are making a tangible difference to help people. As founders of the Internet business, ChakaMarketBridge.com, the pair, who graduated from Jamestown High in 2005, has been helping struggling artists sell their pieces which allows them to have a better life. It’s a simple concept. Geiling, Paine and two others Kristin Walker and Matt Farrell visit the country, meet the artists, buy the goods and then sell them on the worldwide web. The money raised helps the artists improve their circumstances. “Our goal is to help them get a getter standard of life,” Geiling said recently. “That may be helping them feed their families or put their children through school.” “Three of the artists have already built themselves new houses for their families,” added Paine. “Two more of them have purchased the building materials for new houses.” Unlike this country where real estate costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, in Nicaragua, the price is about $7,000 for a respectable dwelling. “That is enough for their dream home,” Paine said. “Our goal is to get them all into their dream homes.” The idea for the business got started a couple years ago when they became aware of the quality artwork being produced by Nicaraguan people. “We asked, ‘Why don’t we start an online marketplace?’” Paine recalled. The pair’s awareness of the Nicaraguan people resulted through their involvement with the Williamsburg Community Chapel which had regular mission trips to the country. Nicaragua seemed the ideal location for their idea to launch. Paine and Geiling wanted to experience the country firsthand. “We visited there for the first time in January of 2010 and fell in love with the country and the people and put us on the path to where we are now,” Paine said. The website tells the story of each artisan and gives people a chance to see the artwork produced and make a purchase.

Eventually, the goal is to have a global marketplace for artisans all over the world. “We want to be that marketplace which allows them to get their name out there and by that supports their families. ” – Ann Efimetz

WHERE TO SEE THE ARTWORK Locally you can see the artwork at Harbour Coffee in New Town. An event will be held 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, June 11. A discussion on social enterprise and a chance to see new products will be featured. Through June 3, see Chaka ceramics at This Century Art Gallery. Area waterways need you Clean the Bay Day will be held 9 a.m.noon, Saturday, June 4. Volunteers are needed to help. Litter that washes away comes ashore again with the tide. Every year since 1989, thousands of volunteers of all ages have dedicated their time to clear debris from urban, suburban, and rural shorelines and waterways. During the 2010 Clean the Bay Day, more than 7,400 volunteers removed some 217,600 pounds of debris along 419 miles of shoreline at 245 sites. This year, York County is asking Homeowner’s Associations to be a part of this bay-wide event by organizing neighborhood cleanups. Many communities are centered around waterways or have ponds within them. Laurie Halperin and Molly Nealer are coordinating volunteers and making assignments for cleanup efforts in York County. To volunteer, go to www.cbf.org/clean, click on registration and then York County. Fill out the form and submit it. Clean the Bay Day volunteers will sent to key areas where trash has been reported. Others will be asked to clean up in their neighborhoods and along shorelines, especially where they have access to private property. People can clean the waterways by boat or by foot. The important thing is to gather groups, friends, neighbors, and coworkers and volunteer for a fun day helping to save the bay. Call 890-3513 for more information.

Seeing of the green Those who traverse the Historic Area have likely happened upon the lawn bowling green located in the back of the Williamsburg Inn. That’s the home to the Williamsburg Lawn Bowling Club whose members regularly participate in competitions and demonstrate the sport to Colonial Williamsburg guests and the general public. The sport has a long and colorful history, with early documentation of of it being played here in the early 1700s. The local green was constructed in the late1960s and has been the home to local bowlers since. The Williamsburg Lawn Bowling Club is the largest in the North East Division, boasting some 60 members who enjoy the chance to compete and socialize with fellow bowlers. The closest clubs are some five hours away in either direction in North Carolina or Delaware. The object of the game is to roll the bowl as close as possible to a small object ball, the jack. It doesn’t require a lot of strength, but it does require focus and skill. Because it is more finesse than physical, it’s a great activity for seniors. “You can be active and competing at an older age,” said Susan Berg, who with her husband Sven, are longtime club members. “And women are just as good at it as men becaue it doesn’t require a lot of muscle strength to be a good lawn bowler. Other skills are involved.” The sport gives members a chance to form friendships while being outWILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2011

side. It’s a win-win for those who enjoy all it has to offer. “You have friendly competitions with your friends,” Berg said. “You enjoy being outdoors and being active.”

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. Make Room for the Memories.

An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two livinghistory museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!

Gifts for Dad Don’t forget Dad this Father’s Day which is Sunday, June 19. The celebration of Father’s Day began with the efforts of Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash. According the The U.S. Census Bureau, Dodd thought of the idea while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. A day in June was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910. It was proclaimed by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of Smart's birth. The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent. There are approximately 70.1 million dads across the U.S. While one of the most popular items for dads for Father’s Day is the traditional or funky neck-

tie, here are a few more suggestions that are readily available at area stores. • Sporting goods, camping equipment, or accessories for hobbies. • Exercise equipment or membership to a gym or other activity. • Tools, hardware or other items for fix-up projects. • Plants, trees or other landscaping/garden equipment or accessories. • After shave or cologne. • Gift certificates are always welcome to a favorite restaurant, coffee shop, barber, store, movie store or clothing store. • Picture frames with handmade art by the kids or family photos. • Grills for the backyard or patio, or accessories. • Personalized frames, mugs, office items or home items. • Books, or e-readers. • Music, including CDs or DVDs of music events or concerts. • Gadgets including MP3 players, watches, GPS or other novelty items. – Ann Efimetz

Flag Day Flag Day is June14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Did you know that one of the longest-running Flag Day parades is held annually in Quincy, Mass.? Each year on the Saturday closest to Flag Day the city pays tribute with the Quincy Flag Day Parade & Celebration. This year marks the 60th annual. Celebrating history through music Music at the Governor’s Palace has a long, rich history. Colonial Williamsburg offers various events highlighting musical heritage in various venues throughout the Historic Area. One of the programs offered are Palace Concerts which run at various times throughout the year. Through June 7, the concerts will be held at 7:30 and 9 p.m. and feature “The Governor’s Musick,” a group of musicians who play chamber music by candlelight. The repertoire is custom crafted to each performance. Jane Hanson, who sings with the group, said that

concerts at the Governor’s Palace date to1938, “with a few breaks.” The music is meant to introduce listeners to the sounds of the 18th century. Other members of the group include Jennifer Edenborn on violin, Herbert Watson on flute, Wayne Moss on viola da gamba and Michael Monaco on harpsichord. “We perform upwards of eight series of programs over the course of the year,” Hanson explained. They usually run three or four or five weeks in a series. It is ongoing. It is like going to the symphony or the opera, it is not always the same.” People who attend appreciate the chance to hear

the music and learn more about the sounds of the era. “They are buying a ticket to something that is not only the music, but the whole show,” Hanson said. “You get the room, the candlelight, the wigs, the gowns and the music. It is everything in a complete package.” The audiences vary from visitors to locals who take advantage of the myriad programs offered at Colonial Williamsburg. The musicians appreciate the chance to share their passion for music. “Some of the people who come may never have been at anything like this before,” Hanson said. “Then we have many guests who come hear us and look for us, they love the music programs. We are very serious about the music making, and in a sense we feel responsibility to those who have played before us.”

Beginning June 14, the group will move to the Capitol for the summer, playing concerts on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., “It is a little more lighthearted,” she said. “We sometimes get them singing.” The group will continue the Capitol concerts until September when they will begin new Palace series continuing through the holiday season. Hanson hopes people will come to the concerts to hear music and to learn more about Williamsburg’s musical legacy. “We do feel we are carrying on a long standing tradition,” she said. “And we try to make it fun for the guests. we try to make it accessible to them.” – Ann Efimetz

Epiphany Anglican Church Epiphany Anglican Church is a small, but growing community of faith located at the Norge Shops at Kristiansand. According the church website, the purpose of Epiphany Anglican Church is to “reach out to people in James City County, Williamsburg, York County, and the surrounding area, and to share with them the gospel of Jesus Christ, regardless of race, color, or creed. The church is an orthodox Anglican Parish, and a founding member of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), a union of more than 100,000 orthodox Anglicans instituted as a new province in June 2009. Church members share in fellowship, prayer, and Bible study throughout the week and come together on Sunday morning for worship. Church administrator Al Kerby said that the church often welcomes visitors who have happened upon them through the website, looking for a place to share faith. It is a small, but tightknit community of faith who have been together for several years.

Before the service, there is a chance for healing prayer to be offered. “People who are hurting for any reason can come and have hands laid on them and we would love to do that,” Kerby said. There has been outreach to Lackey Free Clinic, Heifer International, Young Life and various missionary projects. They will continue serving each other and those in need
