A unique element When you walk into Elements in New Town, you feel as if you have walked into a whimsical dwelling. Bright, vivid hues give the room a fantastical feel. Sparkling jewels gleam from one corner as painted wooden tropical fish seem to gaze curiously. The store’s namesake is drawn from “all the elements that make a home, and that make up the earth.” That name carries into the products offered which have a sophisticated yet natural feel. There is a wide variety of home and floral decor, wine accessories, women’s accessories, jewelry, window treatments, coastal, seasonal and garden decor, home furnishings, wall art, lighting fixtures and vases. “There’s something for everybody here,” said store owner Jody Fecondo. Even those who frequently visit the shop will likely find something new when they visit, especially as the seasons change. “I love the excitement and the buzz that goes on in the shop when we get our seasonal set-up,” she said. “Whether it’s redecorating for Halloween, or the

fall, or for Christmas, when the customers come in, I just love to listen to them.” Regular in-store events including wine tastings are planned throughout the year, open to the public. Elements also provides custom interior design work, custom window treatments, color consultations and free in-home consultations. Fecondo works closely with each client, carefully matching the customer’s visions with products to make their dreams a reality. Fecondo added that Elements will provide the full interior design for the Parade of Homes, Sept. 17Oct. 2 at Hampton’s Buckroe Beach, for Garnett Construction. Element’s classic yet contemporary interior designs will be showcased at the event. Fecondo said she hopes to stay at her location in New Town, as well as expand her business to other areas in Virginia. “We hope to continue to grow,” she said. “May the elements allow so.” – Joanna Morelli

Art hopping Inaugural event showcases galleries Want to enjoy fine art work with the company of your friends while sipping wine and enjoying light fare? What’s even better, you won’t have to worry about driving. Sound like fun? Then make plans to attend the inaugural “Gallery Crawl,” scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29. It will showcase galleries and provide those who attend with shuttle service to social events at each stop. The plan is to highlight our area as an arts destination and provide momentum for An Occasion for the Arts which follows on the weekend. “We are trying to build an entire week of activities building up to An Occasion,” said Tom Gillman, one of the event organizers. The idea for the crawl is drawn from the success of similar events in major metropolitan areas. While Williamsburg doesn’t have a compact district, we do have several galleries around town. Those who attend will pay $40 and get a glass to be used for wine at events hosted by the galleries. Bus drivers take care of the transportation. “There is a high excitement level about this event,” Gillman said. “It should be fun.” The “crawl” begins at either Merchants Square or New Town. The galleries will welcome attendees to sample refreshments and browse the art work. Buses

8

will arrive every few minutes for transportation to the next site. “The buses will keep rotating around,” he explained. “No one will be stuck at a gallery and buses will be pulling up momentarily.” Three bed & breakfasts located on Richmond Road will also host galleries for artists. Gillman is optimistic the experience will provide a unique diversion for those who attend. “As long it is fun and people want to come back next year, then we will have been successful,” he said. Tickets can be purchased at www.williamsburgcelebrates.com. or https://sites.google.com/site/williamsburggallerycrawl/ ESG International is a sponsor of the event – Ann Efimetz

local spin

Triangle gets you there If you’ve been around town, you have likely seen one of Triangle Taxi’s cars. The taxis are distinguishable from a stereotypical city taxi, as these are all new models. “Nobody can believe it until they get in my cabs, they’re nice and clean,” said Edward Erkan, Triangle Taxi owner. Erkan began the company in January of 2008. He comes by the transportation business through his family who still owns buses for transport in Europe. That experience has given him an understanding of the transportation business. His goal is to provide a safe, clean, and reasonably priced taxi service for James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg. Erkan tries to regulate prices from Triangle Taxi to be reasonable and workable locally. One challenge to local taxi companies are cabs from outside of Williamsburg coming into the area. “I want to do more business for the town,” he said. “If we can notify the public to support the local companies and if business goes to the city, to cab owners, then we can survive, especially in this economy.”

Triangle Taxi strives to offer reliable and trustworthy service coupled with good rates. There are 10% discounts for transport to an airport and fares for William & Mary students. The service runs every day of the year and has 24-hour drop off and pick up. Erkan sees promise in the Williamsburg area. “I love Williamsburg,” he said. “Ten years from now this place will probably be like a little New York City.” His future plans include expansion of his transportation business. He is already planning for a medical transportation service and a limousine service. – Joanna Morelli Joanna Morelli is an intern working for The Williamsburg Magazine this summer.

Hip at the square The Crust, Subway Cafe, and Pita Pit are moving into Tribe Square, the apartments-over-stores building on Richmond Road. The William & Mary Real Estate Foundation said a lease for a fourth and final unidentified business is being finalized. Tribe Square will house 56 students in 4 apartments on the upper floors. The Crust is a new concept developed by Baker’s Crust, with a wood-fire oven and artisan breads. It will serve everything from wood-fired grinders and Neopolitan pizza to salads and hand-spun crepes.

The Tribe Square location of Subway Cafe is only the second in Virginia and will have traditional Subway fare combined with a full line of desserts, baked goods and espresso-based drinks. The Pita Pit will serve pita pocket sandwiches, soups and salads. Both Pita Pit and The Crust will also offer outdoor dining on private terraces. All three should open this month or October once they’ve built out their interiors.

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. Positive results The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our first quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. And we got it! Our Grand Opening was a huge success, and we continue to see a steady flow of residents and visitors walk through our doors ready to Discover Teas. -Chris Farishon & Kenneth Roberts of Discover Teas

Our 55th Year

Williamsburg has been selected by “Where to Retire,” a magazine geared toward helping people with retirement relocation decisions, as a top retirement town. Our area will be profiled in the September/October issue, available nationwide. Where to Retire editor Mary Lu Abbott said Williamsburg possesses qualities important to today’s retirees. “Williamsburg residents get the best of two centuries. Retirees can enjoy the perks of modern-day America, complete with fine dining, art museums and theme parks, and in the same day have an 18th-century adventure in Colonial Williamsburg. The College of William & Mary adds to the sophistication and culture and offers extensive leisure-learning opportunities,” Abbott said.

A decade of music It’s been 10 years since Sally Craig founded the Williamsburg Consort. Each September more than 110 musicians from all over the country converge here to make music together and present a concert which has become hugely popular. A full docket of activities has been planned to give people of all ages a chance to hear great music and have fun. “We have added a whole day of outreach,” Craig said in a recent interview. Activities are scheduled Thursday, Sept. 22. 9 a.m. - German Band at Waller Mill Elementary. 10 a.m. - Workshop with Dale Underwood at the Holiday Inn Patriot 11 a.m. Dixie Land Band at Chambrel Noon - Woodwind Ensemble, W&M Bookstore in Merchants Square. Tickets for the concert will be available to the public at 9 a.m., Sept. 14 at all four locations of Union First Market Bank. Limit two tickets per person. “I think last year the tickets went in six minutes,” Craig said. “They go very fast.” This year’s concert is dedicated to consort charter member Lee Baska, who passed away last February, Craig said. “Lee was a great source of ideas and communication and a fine musician,” she noted. Craig added that 11 musicians who will be attending this year’s consort have made the trip every year since its inception. Those members will be recognized at the concert. To date, the Williamsburg Consort has given some $10,000 in scholarships to high school seniors who will be studying music in college. This year $3,500 will be awarded. Craig said the goal is to continue to look forward. “We keep expanding and doing things differently,” she said. “It has been an exciting ten years.” – Ann Efimetz

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 2011

Pressed flowers make unique art Ray Doolan admits that he looks at the plants growing in his yard differently than the average gardener. That’s because his landscape, burgeoning with varieties of flowers and greenery, provides the colorful means for his distinctive artwork. Doolan founded Dublin Floral Creations in1994 while living in the New Hampshire town which bears the company name. He has been working steadily since, producing pieces using dried, pressed flowers on black velveteen. “The black velveteen is my signature,” Doolan said in a recent interview. “It really makes the color really come out.” His palette is whatever Mother Nature provides. Any flower that will dry and press effectively can and will be used. “I use annuals, perennials, wildflowers, you name it,” Doolan said. “Whatever flower will press I use, and I am always looking for new plant matter. I grow almost everything on the property, from seed. I even use weeds. A weed is unwanted when it is in the wrong place. They are not weeds when they are in the right place.” Doolan carefully chooses colors and textures that complement. He places the finished work under glass or UV protected acrylic to help stave off the elements. “The flowers are sprayed with a clear floral sealant which helps with fading process,” he explained. “As long as they are not displayed in sunlight the color will last for decades.” All the plants used in his works are catalogued on the back of the piece. Some works can incorporate up to 20 different varieties. People often tell Doolan they enjoy the vintage quality of his work. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 2011

“They think it is a very unique art, something that was popular in the Victorian Age that I am keeping alive,” he said. “This has grown into a business for me because of the interest in keeping this art form going.” Doolan has branched out into a printed card line including a Shakespeare series sold at the recent Virginia Shakespeare Festival’s Bard’s Market. Some 50% of his profits were donated to the VSF. Locally, Doolan’s work is sold in approximately 18 retail locations including Lightfoot Manor, Bruton Parish Gift Shop and The Old Chickahominy House. His work can be seen at Peninsula Fine Art Center in Newport News. He is a regular exhibitor at Second Sundays on Prince George Street and at Yorktown Market Days at the Riverwalk. His work has gone international, with visitors from several countries across the globe buying pieces to bring home. “I recently sold a piece that went to Sweden,” he said. “That really makes you feel good to know you have pieces all over the world.” – Ann Efimetz

School days begin School may have already started for some area children. The WJC school year begins Tuesday, Sept. 6. There are some things to keep in mind as the school year gets in full swing that can help stave off problems. Before school starts, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with the child’s doctor, dentist and vision specialist. You may also consider getting a hearing screening. Kids grow and change over the summer and a check up to screen for potential challenges can be beneficial. There’s a variety of area doctors, pediatricians, urgent care centers, eye specialists and dentists to accommodate kids and their families get a healthy start to the school year. Immunizations should be up to date. Seasonal influenza vaccines will soon be available at area offices and pharmacies. It is a good idea to get a flu shot to stave off getting sick. Area department and speciality stores offer a variety of the latest clothing, jewelry, books, shoes, backpacks and school supplies. Keep in mind that backpacks with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back should be chosen. Rolling backpacks are also a good idea. Athletic equipment including bicycles and scooters may be included in back-to-school shopping. Kids may live close enough to school to walk, bike or scooter. Make sure your child has a properly fitted helmet if they use wheels to get there. Have you taken a day trip or family outing over the summer? Before school schedules heat up, make an outing to one of our area’s attractions, diversions or beaches. There’s plenty to do locally without having to travel afar. Our area offers theme parks, museums, art galleries, recreational activities, ice cream stores, restaurants, movies, golf and a variety of entertainment options. Take advantage of some of the things in our own backyard to provide some fun in the waning days of summer. – Ann Efimetz

Answering the call to serve Dr. Michael Privett who has been the pastor of Faith Baptist Church on Rochambeau Drive since 1990, will soon embark on a new path as a missionary. He recently answered questions about the future. On Sept. 18 the church will hold a commissioning service to send he and his wife forth as missionaries. It is open to the public. Email him, michaelprivett@gfamissions.org. When did you begin to think that your calling was taking you in a different direction? I have always been called to missions. In the late 1980s, my wife Sheri and I pursued moving to several foreign countries to serve as missionaries, but none of the opportunities worked out. We came to Williamsburg as church planting missionaries. What will be the scope of your work in the missions?

What have you learned about your time at Faith Baptist? First, I’ve discovered that the local church is only a part of God’s overall plan. Secondly, I’ve learned that the church is a body of believers and the family of God, so when one member hurts, we all hurt. Third, I’ve learned the importance of balancing God’s love with God’s truth. What do you hope the future pastor/leadership will continue at the church? I pray that the future pastor will love the Lord and the church family as much as I do. Also that he will continue to focus on God and His Word. – Ann Efimetz

The scope of my work will be worldwide. I will be helping pastors establish/plant new churches in needy areas. Additionally, I will continue to travel to foreign countries to teach nationals how to pastor churches in their part of the world as I’ve already been doing in Brazil and China. I’ll be doing this in the Philippines for two weeks in October. Why do you think missionary work is so important? It was a priority in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ who went from city to village preaching the good news. Jesus Christ commanded His followers to preach the Gospel to everyone (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8. Will your family travel with you? Mainly only my wife will be traveling with me as she often speaks to women’s groups and ministers to the pastors’ wives. My whole family, however, is relocating with me to Travelers Rest, S.C., which is near to the headquarters of my new ministry, Gospel Fellowship Association. 64
