This school year promises to be the very best ever! Evidence of a strong and healthy community is all around. Our students are learning and growing in the very best ways. The campus upgrades and new facilities offer fresh possibilities for teaching and learning. Programs for students and parents alike are unmatched. The Parent Perks parent education program, organized by School Counselor Jill Wiedman through the Office of Student Life, as well as the Dolores Evans Speaker Series provide a platform for us to learn together.
It is a pleasure to announce that for the first time in the history of the School, our Early Childhood Spanish class is no longer taught from a cart. This class now occupies a space in the center of the historic O’Neil Ford building, demonstrating The Lamplighter School’s commitment to Spanish language acquisition. Early Childhood Spanish Teacher Señora Carolina Cadena and Lower School Spanish Teacher Maestra Jezabel Guadalupe are able to provide greater continuity of instruction because we now have the facilities to do so. As educators, they understand the importance of learning to speak, beginning to write, and understanding the Spanish language.
As previously announced, the entire school is in a year-long self-study in preparation for the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) 10-year reaccreditation visit in October of next year. Assistant Head for Teaching & Learning – Early Childhood Judith Mullens is once again coordinating the work of the self-study committees. Thank you to both current and past parents, faculty, staff, and alumni for completing the surveys administered in October and November. Your reflections and comments will be very helpful to the ISAS visiting committee as we continue to strengthen our school.
Speaking of a strong and healthy community, Carnival – The State Fair of Lamplighter, sponsored by the Lamplighter Parents’ Association (LPA), was, in a word, amazing. Alumni and alumni parents joined current students and parents for a rollicking good time. A special thank you to LPA President Stephanie Fine and Carnival CoChairs Carson Castellaw and Lauren Van Wagenen and their teams of volunteers for providing our community with one of the best celebrations that we’ve enjoyed since coming out of the pandemic years.
All in all, it has been such a wonderful fall season. On behalf of the faculty and staff, thank you for your deep and abiding commitment to The Lamplighter School.
Sincerely, Dr. Joan Buchanan Hill Catherine M. Rose Head of School
Dear Lamplighter Community,

The campus upgrades and new facilities offer fresh possibilities for teaching and learning.
The Future is Bright
Dear Lamplighter Community,
It’s been an amazing start to the school year! Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our community — and to Dr. Hill and her team who worked tirelessly throughout the summer to ensure the building was ready for school to start on time — students and teachers began the year in bright, refreshed spaces that inspire creativity and hands-on learning.
This building project is the culmination of a decade-plus-long vision that began in 2010 when we purchased our land from The Hockaday School. With our permanent home secured, the Board of Trustees was able to plan for Lamplighter’s long-term future and fully realize our founders’ vision for innovation and excellence in early childhood education. In 2012, the Board engaged Marlon Blackwell Architects to create a Campus Master Plan, and in 2014, the Igniting Young Minds campaign led to the addition of the Eastin Family Innovation Lab, the LPA Barn, and the new Murray Swain Ring Road to maximize the use of campus green space.
In 2021, using the 2018 Strategic Plan: Enhancing, Strengthening, and Illuminating the Lamplighter Experience as our guide, the Board of Trustees launched the current Bright Future campaign. With the improvements made possible by this campaign, our physical plant and building will match the level of our programming, allowing us to meet student needs now and provide for an even brighter future.
• Additional classrooms in third and fourth grades provide every teacher and class with their own dedicated space.
• The Alumni & Student Services Center provides increased security through a safe and secure single point of entry. An archival gallery bridges the addition to the original O’Neil Ford building, educating visitors, students, and their families on Lamplighter’s rich history.
• The Theater Arts Exploration Lab is a multi-use space that allows Lamplighter to build on its signature drama program, exposing students to technical theater and giving them the opportunity to practice and perform in a real theater setting.
• The new Early Childhood Library makes our library collection more accessible to our youngest learners. The world language classroom provides a permanent space for Spanish instruction, a subject previously taught from a rolling cart. New tutoring spaces allow for reinforcement of classroom learning.
• The Outdoor Learning Center will set us apart as the leader in early childhood education. A reimagined landscape designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc will provide countless new opportunities for outdoor, handson teaching and learning. Playground elements designed by Danish company Monstrum will inspire students’ thoughtful, imaginative, and creative play.
• Finally, increasing our endowment is critical to Lamplighter’s long-term success and sustainability. Endowed funds provide resources for innovative programs, faculty, compensation, professional development, and facility maintenance. Gifts to Lamplighter’s endowment ensure that our beloved school will continue to thrive into the future.
Our Lamplighter community is incredible! A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to our parents, alumni, alumni parents, long-time friends in the community, and our faculty and staff who have contributed their time, treasure, and talent to make this Bright Future campaign a success. Because of your generosity we are over 90% to our campaign goal.
We hope everyone in our community will be part of this historic moment for Lamplighter. Please join us in ensuring our children’s bright future as well as a bright future for generations of Lamplighter students to come. This spring we will celebrate outside with a community-wide Hootenanny!
In Lamplighter Spirit,

LAMPLIGHTER’S BRIGHT FUTURE
Elevating Our Facilities to Match Innovative Programming
2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR OPENS WITH NEW ADDITIONS AND RENOVATED SPACES
“The new Alumni & Student Services Center is a welcoming place for our alumni that helps build community. Working in this new building is a dream. Natural light, clean lines, and plenty of room make it ideal for everyday work and for meeting with our alumni and former students.” — Cindy Connolly, Associate Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations
The Lamplighter School opened the 2022-2023 school year with a bang! Students arrived for the first day of school on August 29 to a campus with new learning spaces and completely refreshed interiors. The campus additions and renovations are a result of a decade-long effort led by the Lamplighter Board of Trustees to elevate the School’s facilities to the level of our innovative programming. These plans emerged from the Strategic Plans developed for the School in 2012 following the purchase of our land, and in 2018 after the completion of the Eastin Family Innovation Lab, LPA Barn, and expanded Murray Swain Ring Road.
in order to improve the student experience. These areas include a relocated Ginsburg Health Clinic, new tutoring spaces, and ADA-accessible ramps, bathrooms, and an elevator.
The renovations are significant and involve a complete overhaul of the interiors to the 100,000-plus-squarefoot space occupied by the School’s North/South Wings, Fine Arts Wing, and Klyde Warren Auditorium. In order to accomplish this massive renovation, all furniture, supplies, materials, and artwork had to be removed from the building and relocated to temporary storage for the summer. This process began in May with clean-out days supported by all faculty and staff, as well as several parent volunteers. Members of the faculty and staff, with assistance from Lamplighter dads, worked on weekends in the spring to ensure that everything in the building was cleared by the last day of the school year. Hundreds of orange crates arrived, and items were quickly packed away, donated, or disposed of, taking advantage of this opportunity to purge old materials.
New campus additions that are now fully operational include an Alumni & Student Services Center, a Theater Arts Exploration Lab, additional classrooms for third and fourth grade, an Early Childhood Spanish classroom, and a supplementary Early Childhood library. The Alumni & Student Services Center has created a safe and secure single point of entry for all guests arriving on campus. The new classrooms for third and fourth grade now provide a dedicated classroom space for each homeroom, rather than using the shared space as a classroom or operating on a rotating classroom schedule. Other areas of the campus have been reconfigured or reimagined
None of this would have been possible without the leadership of the Board of Trustees, including Former Board Chair Doug MacMahon, Current Board Chair Flauren Fagadau Bender ’90, Construction Committee Chair and current Trustee Gowri Sharma, and Catherine M. Rose Head of School Dr. Joan Buchanan Hill, as well as the early support of generous donors to Lamplighter’s Bright Future campaign.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE OPERATIONS TEAM
THE SUCCESS OF THE CAMPUS ADDITIONS AND RENOVATIONS would not have been possible without the herculean effort by Lamplighter’s Operations Team, led by Chief Operations Officer Marynell Murphy. Murphy served as the liaison between Lamplighter and construction partner Lee Lewis Construction, Inc. while continuing to oversee all campus operations at the School. Her leadership throughout the project is remarkable and demonstrates true embodiment of dedication and perseverance. Murphy’s team went above and beyond all expectations to ensure the success of the project for the benefit of all Lamplighter students. They worked extended hours on nights, weekends, and holidays throughout the construction project to ensure that faculty and staff members could work during the summer in the Eastin Family Innovation Lab and in the LPA Barn, and that the School would be ready to fully reopen to students in late August for the new school year.
Administrative Assistant Helen Skalniak helped to serve as a front-facing resource for parents and all members of the community. Not only did she field questions related to construction, but she also served as a key resource for campus safety and security throughout the process. Database Specialist Mike Bailey is the newest member of the Operations Team and joined Lamplighter during the summer, in the midst of the project. He quickly integrated into the team and provided crucial back office support to ensure that Lamplighter was ready for the 2022-2023 school year.
The facilities team of Claudia Lopez, Dan Knudsen, Damariz Rojo, and Dwayne Spencer tackled the very daunting task of assembling all the new furniture which was delivered over the summer. In addition, each of these team members supported the School through countless facilities needs associated with removing everything from the building into storage, then back into the newly renovated spaces. Their support of all members of the faculty and staff as they prepared for the opening of the school year was tremendous and they never wavered in their commitment to getting the job done.
The technology team of Ed Goff and Jay Valentine worked diligently behind the scenes to organize, transport, and safeguard equipment that was critical to running the School while the construction and renovation process was underway. IT Manager and long-time Lamplighter employee Ed Goff reflected on the massive undertaking that was involved in supporting the School’s information technology systems through construction and renovations.
“If you have ever packed for a move, you know the feeling when you pull an entertainment center or computer desk away from the wall and face a daunting tangle of cables. Well, in preparing for the summer’s renovation and construction, there were plenty of cables to deal with, and we identified more than 20 different categories of ‘IT stuff’ in 61 separate areas of the building—from access points to Apple TVs, battery backups to BeeBots. We labeled, disassembled, and moved it all, including 34 75-inch displays, to storage. And then we moved it all back and reassembled it. In between—and alongside some inevitable, unexpected challenges—we moved summer staff to temporary work areas; did system shutdowns for electrical work; made repairs, relocations, and additions to the network throughout the main building; and installed a whole new phone system and a campus-wide IP speaker system. Not to mention the planning, design, and execution that went into expanding the network to serve the new Alumni & Student Services Center and new classrooms. The move of a lifetime for sure! I can hardly believe it’s done.”
Lamplighter salutes Marynell Murphy and the incredible Lamplighter Operations Team for their steadfast commitment to the School and our community. Congratulations to the team on the success of this transformational campus project!
Lamplighter celebrated its partners at Lee Lewis Construction, Inc. and all the contractors for supporting the School’s new additions and extensive interior renovations.

EXTENDING THE DAY: BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY
Partnerships Enhance the Lamplighter Experience Through Extended Day Programs
THE LAMPLIGHTER SCHOOL offers a unique student experience both academically and through one-of-akind programs, events, and special traditions. Over the past 10 years, this student experience has expanded outside the regular school day with program offerings that extend beyond traditional school hours. These programs include Lamplighter’s faculty-supported beforeschool care, after-school care provided by the YMCA, and a robust after-school enrichment program, NightLight. Through long-term partnerships with organizations like the YMCA, as well as cultivation of new partnerships with both local and national organizations, Lamplighter has implemented programs that build our community and enhance the student experience.
YMCA PARTNERSHIP
A little more than a decade ago, the need for extended day programs emerged from interest within the community for a longer school day to support working parents and to help balance family commitments. To address this interest among parents, Lamplighter launched its after-school care program in 2010 by establishing a partnership with the local YMCA. During the inaugural year of this extended day offering, only four students were enrolled in the program, but it served a need that was quickly becoming paramount for many families.
Now, more than 10 years later, the YMCA after-school program has grown substantially and diversified its offering. In addition to full-time student enrollment (five days a week), the YMCA now allows student drop-ins with a punch card for families needing extended care on select days. Today, the program has 30 students enrolled in the full-time program, with up to 50 students each semester holding a punch card for drop-in sessions.
BEFORE SCHOOL CARE
In addition, Lamplighter has also added other extended day programming to support the needs of our families and to provide enrichment opportunities for students. For example, the School’s before-school care program now provides an option for parents who need to start their days a little earlier. Students in this program are dropped off early to play board games, read, participate in arts & crafts, or play with friends, and are supervised by Lamplighter faculty members. This service is free of charge to families provided that the student is formally registered in the program. Today, there are 50 students enrolled in the Before School Care program, with an average daily attendance of approximately 20 students. Science Teacher Bill Burton, Assistant Librarian Jordan Palefsky, and School Nurse Susan Regan Donnenfield supervise Before School Care each school day.
NIGHTLIGHT PROGRAM
Most notably, over the past 10 years, Lamplighter has built its signature NightLight program, a robust afterschool enrichment offering. NightLight classes offer a range of topics including world languages, STEM, theater, music, dance, chess, art, sports, and more. Some classes are taught by Lamplighter faculty members while others are supported through partnerships with outside organizations with a focus in a particular area. All classes take place on campus and extend the school day to 4:45 p.m.
Lamplighter’s after-school enrichment program began during the 2010-2011 school year and was initially led by former faculty member and Lamplighter alumna Katie Ruggeri Nelson ’94. During that year, the program launched with just two classes: Chess and Tennis. Five students were enrolled in Chess and four students were enrolled in Tennis, a class that was held on the blacktop (the original Sport Court) with an inflatable net.
As interest in after-school enrichment classes grew, Lamplighter formalized the program, established the name “NightLight,” and added several offerings to each semester’s line-up. Today, each semester includes up to 50 NightLight classes with offerings for students in all grade levels, Pre-K through fourth grade. Auxiliary Programs Coordinator Shari Krage notes that given the

extensive options now included in the program, “families are not only using the NightLight program to extend the school day, but are also using the program as an opportunity to ‘taste test’ a variety of activities for their child.” With a one-day-aweek class with only a semester-long commitment, students have the opportunity to try various areas of interest before making a longer-term and more time-intensive commitment to something outside of school.
Moreover, Krage points out that in addition to enrichment in a certain topic, most NightLight classes incorporate an element of cooperative play and opportunities for socialemotional development. “NightLight classes offer the students a chance to mix and mingle with their peers, as well as with students in adjacent grades,” said Krage. She went on to note that through these after-school enrichment options, “students develop new friendships with classmates, and even have an opportunity to mentor younger students in classes that are offered to a broad range of grade levels.”
Many parents agree that the NightLight program has enhanced the Lamplighter experience for their children both in terms of enrichment and developing friendships. Fourth grade parent Kim Allen shared that “the NightLight program has represented a unique
opportunity to enhance education, growth, and fun all while spending time after school with Lamplighter friends. Our family has benefited immensely from our experience.” Moreover, Interim Director of Admission & Placement Becky Walker notes that prospective Lamplighter parents also value how NightLight classes extend the school day, offering another great after-school care option in addition to the YMCA program. Walker shared that these parents “appreciate the diversity of programming and how it complements the already rich curriculum offered during the regular school day.” She went on to share that “prospective parents can easily imagine their child finding a passion through NightLight, whether it’s learning a new sport, performing on stage, or delving deep into a science concept.”
MEET SHARI KRAGE Auxiliary Programs Coordinator
Shari Krage has been teaching and working in early childhood and elementary schools for 40 years. Now in her 19th year at Lamplighter, Shari supports all extended day programming at the School. Krage began managing auxiliary programs in 2013 on a part-time basis, then transitioned to a full-time role in 2020 given the extensive growth of Before School Care, After School Care, and the NightLight enrichment program. Prior to this full-time role, she served as an Alternate Teacher and an Early Childhood Spanish Teacher at Lamplighter.
Shari continues to build her knowledge in the area of auxiliary programming by attending the annual Summer Programs & Auxiliary Revenue Collaborative (SPARC) Conference. In November, she also hosted an auxiliary program networking event at Lamplighter for fellow professionals in this field.

LAMPLIGHTER GIVES BACK
GREEN TEAM SPONSORS 8TH SHOE DRIVE BENEFITTING SOLES4SOULS
For the eighth year, Lamplighter’s Green Team organized and championed a community shoe drive to support Soles4Souls, an organization that brings shoes and clothing to people in crisis situations, freeing up financial resources they can use toward other needs. The mission of the Green Team is to raise awareness of growing environmental challenges and to inspire members of the Lamplighter community to take action to help preserve our planet and our future. The annual Soles4Souls shoe drive supports this mission and provides students with a tangible way in which they can help others.
The Green Team kicked off this year’s shoe drive during an all-school assembly on September 16. The assembly was led by two members of the Lamplighter Green Team, Third Grade Teacher Rachel Stefano and Lamplighter Senior AJ Bays ’23. As the current Vice President of the Lamplighter Layers Corporation, AJ serves as the student liaison on the Green Team. During the Green Team-sponsored assembly, students learned about the Soles4Souls organization and how they could help children and families who do not have access to proper footwear. This educational assembly launched a two-week effort to collect new or gently used shoes from Lamplighter families.
Once the shoes were collected, Lamplighter Seniors helped to sort and count the pairs of shoes for the School’s donation to Soles4Souls. In the end, our community collected more than 900 pairs of shoes this year, bringing Lamplighter’s grand total to 21,629 pairs of shoes collected since the program’s inception. Thank you to the Lamplighter community for your generous support!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
SUPPORTED BY THE LPA
Our school also engages in efforts to support the local community through a partnership with the Lamplighter Parent’s Association (LPA). Throughout the school year, the Community Outreach Committee of the LPA organizes activities and collections for Family Gateway, a local organization that provides support services for families affected by homelessness. This fall, the LPA organized a Halloween costume drive and a laundry pod drive benefitting our partner organization.
The HALLOWEEN COSTUME DRIVE was conducted in late September and generated 200 costume donations which allowed children served by Family Gateway to select costumes at the organization’s annual Boo Bash. The effort was followed by a LAUNDRY POD DRIVE for Family Gateway in conjunction with Lamplighter’s annual Donuts with Dads event. On October 7, dads joined students for donuts and playtime on the Lamplighter playground. Thanks to the support of the LPA Community Outreach Committee, families donated more than 4,000 laundry pods at this event.
Lamplighter extends a heartfelt thank you to the LPA Community Outreach Co-Chairs, Nicole Berry, Courtney Hodges, Jean Larsen, and Amanda Shufeldt for organizing and support these initiatives.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS
CELEBRATING DIWALI: THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
Lamplighter embraces and celebrates a variety of cultures and holidays throughout the school year through classroom lessons, assemblies, and special events. Many of these celebrations are enhanced and supported by the Lamplighter Parents’ Association (LPA) through the work of the Cultural Awareness Committee, as well as additional support from numerous parent volunteers.
This fall, the Cultural Awareness Committee of the LPA organized a variety of activities to commemorate Diwali at the School on October 24. Diwali, a holiday celebrated in Indian culture, is a festival of new beginnings and prosperity as well as a celebration of light (good) over dark (evil). Thanks to the support of parent volunteers, Lamplighter students had the chance to experience Diwali on campus with rangolis, bindis, art projects, Indian dances and music, and a unique student-led assembly. With the guidance of parent volunteers, a group of students in all grade levels shared information about India and the tradition of Diwali. In addition, parent volunteers organized an opportunity for faculty and staff to wear ethnic clothing on Diwali by sharing items to be worn during the school celebration.
Lamplighter extends a special thank you to LPA Cultural Awareness Co-Chairs Saurabh Tandon, Piyusha Patel, and Tamesha Logan for planning and organizing a special celebration of Diwali for the Lamplighter community.

LIFELONG LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AT LAMPLIGHTER EXTEND BEYOND STUDENTS
An important part of the philosophy of The Lamplighter School is lifelong learning. The mission of the School is to instill in its students the joy of learning for its own sake. This philosophy extends to the School’s faculty and staff, who enjoy a wide variety of educational opportunities, as well as to the parents of the wider community.

DR. THOMPSON IS A GIFTED SPEAKER AND PSYCHOLOGIST AND PROVIDED US WITH WONDERFUL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SOCIAL LIVES OF CHILDREN AND THE SCHOOL-TO-HOME RELATIONSHIP. I COULDN’T HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER START TO THIS YEAR’S PARENT PERKS PROGRAM.
School Counselor Jill Wiedman, Office of Student Life
This fall, Lamplighter offered a unique learning opportunity to parents, and to the faculty and staff, by bringing a preeminent thought leader in parenting and education to our campus. In late September, Michael G. Thompson, Ph.D., of Arlington, Mass., visited Lamplighter and kicked off the School’s signature Parent Perks parent education series with an evening event for the community. Dr. Thompson is a New York Times bestselling author as well as a psychologist and school consultant specializing in children and parenting. He has authored nine books focusing on the emotional lives of boys, friendships, and social cruelty in childhood; the impact of summer camp experiences on child development; the tensions that arise in the parent-teacher relationships; and psychological aspects of school leadership. His notable book titles include Best Friends, Worst Enemies; Raising Cain; Homesick and Happy; and The Pressured Child
Dr. Thompson’s evening presentation at Lamplighter launched the 2022-2023 Parent Perks series and focused on understanding the social lives of children. Nearly 150 Lamplighter parents gathered to learn from Dr. Thompson and to take part in this unique educational opportunity. Dr. Thompson’s entertaining style, mixed with dozens of fascinating real-life anecdotes of children and families across the globe, engaged the crowd and filled Cook Gym with laughter and relatability. In the end, parents shared that they were energized by the lively presentation and appreciated the chance to learn from a premier thought leader in the field of parenting and education.
The very next day, Dr. Thompson hosted a day-long workshop for all members of the Lamplighter faculty and staff. This interactive session provided faculty and staff with deeper insights into independent school communities, as well as ways to enhance the parent-school relationship. Dr. Thompson utilized role-playing and scenarios specific to Lamplighter to help faculty and staff further connect with the lessons shared throughout the workshop.
School Counselor Jill Wiedman of Lamplighter’s Office of Student Life shared, “It was a pleasure to have Dr. Thompson visit Lamplighter and to hear him address both our parent and faculty-staff community.” She went on to note that “Dr. Thompson is a gifted speaker and psychologist and provided us with wonderful information about the social lives of children and the school-to-home relationship. I couldn’t have asked for a better start to this year’s Parent Perks program.”

20 21 -20 22 IMPACT REPORT
The 2021-2022 school year saw our return to the traditions and special moments that define Lamplighter. As you will see on the following pages, Trustees, Life Trustees, current and former parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and alumni allowed Lamplighter to shine Brighter Than Ever through participation in giving, volunteering, and engaging. Thank you.
In addition to the extraordinary support of Lamplighter, I would like to share some highlights from the year:
The Lamplighter Fund surpassed its goal for the 19th year in a row, with 94% participation by current parents.
Our dedicated Lamplighter Parents’ Association raised a record-breaking $585,000 through the Big & Bright Auction, volunteered roughly 4,000 hours on behalf of Lamplighter, and created hundreds of opportunities for families and students to engage with each other throughout the year.
Lamplighter’s Alumni Association honored Dolores Evans, Sue McCullough, and the Reeves family: Jennie Reeves, Lucy Reeves Wrubel ’78, and Stella Wrubel ’16 at the annual Spirit Award Luncheon; washed cars at the Young Alumni Car Wash; and celebrated at Friendsgiving and the classes of 2014 and 2018 at special reunions.
Lamplighter’s Bright Future campaign dominated campus life throughout the year. It was amazing to see the thoughtful care and attention for our students during construction. Campaign leadership and Dr. Hill hosted dozens of visits and meetings with prospective donors. These donors made commitments that transformed Lamplighter’s campus and will impact our students, faculty, and staff for years to come.
Thank you for your commitment to this special place.
With sincerest thanks,
Elizabeth L. Selzer Chief Advancement Officer
