here’s nothing more rewarding than seeing your passion come to life! Inside every one of us there is dream and desire bigger than ourselves waiting to be unleashed! However, nobody does it just by themselves. It takes a team or, more or less, an army to make somebody successful.

LESLIE MCCARROLL

Everyone from rock stars, artists, designers, writers, dancers, actors, entrepreneurs, fitness professionals, publishers, sales professionals, you name it…there is a dedicated team behind every successful person.

Publisher VP of Sales/Marketing

It’s tough out there. There are times when you just want to quit or take the road less traveled, but then you remember your “why.” Why you started. Maybe it’s because you didn’t want to have a mediocre life. Maybe it’s because of your childhood, or a bet you made with a friend, or even to better yourself. Maybe it’s because you despise the 9 to 5 grind and you want something bigger, better, and more exciting for yourself. Maybe you realize that you were always that square peg and you’re better off following your heart than following the herd.

Whatever your why is, do it 100% or don’t do it all. You might fail the first time but you might fly and soar higher than you ever thought possible! This issue is dedicated to the artists out there! Thank you for pursuing your passion and going after your dreams. You inspire us all! “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” - Marianne Williamson We are excited to finally expand our publication into the San Francisco and Sacramento area. It is our pleasure to welcome you to our new content that features northern California businesses as well as our beloved Reno/Tahoe. It is our mission to be your premier lifestyle brand from the beautiful Sierras to the Bay Area. With that being said, we are looking for contributors that want to be a part of our growing Bliss Babe Family! If you think you have what it takes please email us your ideas at: Contactus@BlissBabe.com. We hope you enjoy this issue! We put our “ART” and Soul into it!

CoolSculpting @ Posh Salon

It Doesn’t Get any Better

C

oolSculpting. It sounds like a new art class for hipsters, but it’s not. It is an incredibly simple, safe, non-invasive, FDA cleared body contouring technique that not only gets rid of those stubborn pooches and bulges you just can’t seem to lose, it also eliminates the fat cells for good! The technical term is “apoptosis” which literally means cell death. Posh Salon & Medical Spa is THE premier provider of CoolSculpting services in Northern Nevada and Posh could not be a better way to describe it! Our very own Bliss Babes—Publisher/CEO, Leslie McCarroll and Debbie McCarthy, Director of Business Development—are both getting CoolSculpting treatments at Posh and from beginning to end, it is a first class encounter! CoolSculpting is a medically supervised procedure at Posh led by Kristina Disbrow Hansen, M.D. and a team of certified CoolSculpt Specialsts. Mary Brockhage and Michele Jacobe are the primary technicians and because CoolSculpting can be a sensitive process, they become your advocates, and often, friends. They have both had treatments themselves and offer empathetic ears to listen to any concerns you may have. “We know it can be hard and we’re here to make it as easy as possible. We address your concerns and are here to help feel and look your best.” The process begins with digital “Before” photos being taken. It’s completely private and done in the beautiful consultation room with the office fully closed off. Debbie stood on the Octagon, an eight-sided numbered piece of wood, while Michele snapped shots of her abdomen at eight different angles (no holding it in allowed!). Then it’s on to the treatment room. Being that this is a medical procedure, you might expect it to be a clinical setting. Not so! Remember, this is Posh Medical Spa. The suite is set up for pure comfort and pampering. You get a plush robe, a soft blanket and pillows, champagne, wine, or soft drinks. There is a rack full of fluffy towels to elevate your legs, cushion your neck, or wherever else you’d like.

JULY & AUGUST 2017

BLISSBABE.COM

Posh has two CoolSculpting machines so you can have DualSculpting— two treatments at once—which cuts your treatment time in half. Each treatment takes 35 minutes per session. Deb is having her abdomen, “love handles” (flanks), and “bra bulge” treated and chose to have all of these areas done in one day. After making sure Deb was ultra-comfy and that the spa chair was adjusted to her liking, Michele took a gooey gel pad and applied it to Deb’s right side. This helps the hand piece adhere to the skin to ensure precise suction and protect the skin from the cooling. She explained every step as she went so there was never any fear or confusion. The CoolAdvantage hand piece was applied and at first Deb felt deep suction, “Like getting a hickey.” Then the cold kicked in, and it felt freezing at first, but then she said it felt more like a burning sensation, “kind of like when you hold your hand in the snow too long.” But after about seven minutes, the sensation was gone and she hardly felt anything, she just “knew something was on me, but it didn’t hurt or feel like much more than a little pull.” Immediately after the right one was applied, Michele followed the same process on Deb’s left side. It was during this time that the delicious catered lunch from Nothing To It was brought in. Again, champagne and wine flow freely, and they have a beautiful flatscreen TV with Netflix and headphones. You can also bring whatever device or form of entertainment you prefer and log-on to their free wifi. Of course, you can also take a nap! Once the 35 minutes were up and the hand pieces were removed, Michele preformed a light two minute post-procedure massage to increase the efficacy of the treatment. Rumor has it that Leslie didn’t tolerate her treatments quite as well and found them to be a little less comfortable. Another great perk is that you get a complimentary manicure with any CoolSculpt package. You can also conveniently have other spa services done during your CoolSculpting treatment, such as Botox, facial fillers, or B12 injections. In fact, Deb got Botox during her session with staff RN, Rosie Browne. Once your session is complete, you can start to see results as early as three weeks up to 90 days. You can expect to see a 25% reduction of fat cells in the treated areas. Consultations are always complimentary and to find out if you are a good candidate, call Posh Salon at 775-826-7674 or visit their website at poshsalonreno.com.

Relax, Rejuvenate, & Reset

I

f there is anything better than being pampered at a spa, I haven’t found it. There is nothing like stepping into a peaceful place dedicated to melting your troubles away. As a Reno local, and frequent traveler, it’s easy to forget that there are so many amazing places right in our own backyard, which is why I was so excited to visit the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR) for a trip to their incredible spa! The GSR is a popular choice for locals and visitors, in part because of its seclusion from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. When you’re ready for a break from your normal routine, a trip to GSR is just what you need to reset and unwind. I planned a girl’s day with my niece Rebecca to check out the GSR Spa, and immediately after walking through the doors I felt the calming atmosphere wash over me. The soft colors and eucalyptus scent put me in the perfect headspace for my massage and facial, and the décor was beautiful and luxurious. Your experience starts with a trip to their spacious locker room to change into a fluffy robe and slippers—the perfect beginning to your time there. You can be rest-assured that your belongings are safe while you head out to enjoy complete relaxation. I was very impressed with my massage and the care my therapist offered by ensuring they understood exactly what I wanted. The room was lovely, peaceful, and smelled delicious. My facial was rejuvenating and made my skin feel amazing and fresh. In between treatments, we were free to enjoy the beauty of the spa in a softly lit room, complete with a co-ed, pool-sized hot tub and lounge chairs. Adults are offered bottomless mimosas, and everyone is free to enjoy the sauna and steam room. I left the spa feeling amazing. In fact, my only regret is not spending more time there! Any local that is looking for a place to escape for a few hours should make the GSR spa their go to place. And, if everything I’ve told you already isn’t enough, locals can get 25% off spa services. Now you really have no excuse! You can learn more about the extensive services offered at the GSR spa by visiting their website at www.grandsierraresort.com.

It’s never too late to be what you might have been AN INTERVIEW WITH ANNA PERALEZ.

I

t is very unusual to start ballet at eighteen years old and become a ballet dancer. It is actually unheard of to dance professionally after starting so late in the game. Most dancers who start late and dance in a ballet company have at least some other background, like gymnastics.

16

JULY & AUGUST 2017

BLISSBABE.COM

BB: What inspired you to become a dancer? AP:opera.EarlySo Iaswasa child, my Grandparents were huge fans of the ballet and exposed to it as a viewer at an early age by watching

performances on TV or listening to classical music on my grandfather’s record player. I was fascinated by Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland. I would watch American Ballet Theaters Nutcracker repeatedly without ever getting sick of it. Like most little girls, I never dreamt of becoming a ballerina or fairy princess. I never imagined I would someday dance on stage. These were my humble first memories of ballet.

and decided to take it “just for fun”. I’ll never forget my instructor's comment, “You are a natural. Are you sure you have never taken ballet classes before?” She quickly encouraged me to go to a more serious ballet studio for technique training, which I immediately transferred. I was very fortunate to train with a studio that allowed me to take any class with any age. I didn’t mind as I just wanted to improve. It was a small studio and I could get a lot of attention and help. I like to think that I was taken under their wing, which I am forever grateful. Within one year, I was dancing on stage as a Demi-soloist with my first ballet company.

BB: What was your first ballet class like? AP:old. Fast forward ten or so years later: a week after I turned 18 years I remember my very first ballet class. It was completely on a whim

BB: What kind of dedication did it take to get where you are now? AP:my time Blood, sweat, tears, absolute hard work. Over the years, I dedicated to as many dance classes, summer intensives, and performing whenever and wherever I could. Even when on vacation, I would find a class in the area that could take. I wanted to gain as much experience as possible.

BB:dealIt’swithnocriticism secret that the world of ballet is competitive. How did you and stay motivated? AP:that Iserved look back, and I realize that I had a stubborn and naive mindset me well. Parents or other students looked at me with puzzled faces. They couldn’t comprehend why I was taking ballet with 12-yearolds. Although I was unsure of how far I’d go, I didn’t want anything else but to dance. You have to focus and believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will.

BB: What is it like to still dance in a ballet company? AP:rehearsals. Still a lot of hard work and long hours in the studio for Most dancers are half my age. I’m no longer so focused

on being “perfect”. I try to just enjoy the art and experience of it. Yes, pirouettes and sky-high jumps are impressive. But I now realize that dance is also communication and artistry. I appreciate the power of small and simple movement.

BB: Do you have any advice for anyone starting or continuing dance late in life? AP:industry. There’s a huge emphasis on what you can do at what age in this Don’t listen to it. If you want to do it, just do it. Always listen and be aware of how your body is responding. Be good to yourself. My favorite quote that has carried me through the years; “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” by George Eliot.

BB: Where can we see you dance and what are you up to now? AP:intrested I has some projects in the making. For the moment, I am not in running a ballet company but creating and leading a

group that combines classical ballet technique with edgy choreography. Stay tuned.

AN INTERVIEW WITH JUSTIN FURSTENFELD OF

20

JULY & AUGUST 2017

BLISSBABE.COM

Blue October

is the Texas-based

band known for its shimmering melodies and heart-string pulling lyrics, boasting a powerful line-up of players and one of the most emotionally charged and magnetic front men in music today in Justin Furstenfeld. Blue October has charted NINE Top 40 Hot AC and Alternative singles over EIGHT albums with songs like “Into The Ocean,” “Hate Me,” “Home” “Calling You,” “Dirt Room,” “Say It,” “Bleed Out” and “Fear” from albums such as 2009’s Billboard Top 200 #13 debut ‘Approaching Normal,’ 2011’s Billboard #8 debut ‘Any Man In America,’ the Platinum-selling ‘Foiled’, Billboard’s #13 debut ‘Sway,’ and most recently 2016’s new album ‘Home’ #1 Alternative Album, #1 Rock Album, #1 Independent Album, #5 Current Album Top 200 reaching audiences around the world. On April 22nd, 2016, Blue October released their 8th studio album, titled Home. This album was co-produced by Justin Furstenfeld and Tim Palmer and features mixes from Tim Palmer and Mark Needham. “Sway was about finding inner peace and learning to live in a healthy way,” says Furstenfeld. “This new album Home is about what we do with our time on earth, how we’re going to utilize that time in a positive way and make it the best we possibly can by bettering ourselves.” My eyes welled up with tears that night. I wasn’t prepared for how the lyrics and the music would hit me so hard and how I would be touched and moved by Justin Furstenfeld’s performance in the 2015 “Things We Do At Night Show- Live from Texas” at the House of Blues in Dallas on iTunes. Of course, most people are familiar with their platinum singles “Hate Me” and “Into the Ocean” from their 2006 platinum album, Foiled. I hadn’t really known most of their other songs until I was recently introduced to them by my boyfriend. I instantly was drawn to Justin’s performance and the lyrics because of the authenticity and rawness of the subject matter in his songs. He holds nothing back about his own personal struggles throughout his life and I felt ok about being not okay with what I was going through or had struggled with. His personal struggles and life experiences are what makes up most of the material on his platinum singles. It’s brave, raw, compelling and uncut. Everyone of us has been through a lot of crap, but how many of us want to talk about it and put ourselves out there in fear of being judged or scrutinized so publicly? Not Justin. It seems he has no fear and no inhibitions; Justin exudes rawness, vulnerability pain, laughter, frustration, resent, depression, and ambition in all of his captivating performances. I just knew after watching him on iTunes, I would have to see him live and get an interview with him to find out more about this amazing human being that had touched so many people. It just so happened that Blue October would be playing at Cargo inside Whitney Peak Hotel on May 14th in Reno, NV. With a little bit of belief and determination in myself, I was able to secure a 20 minute phone interview with Justin to get up-close and personal. He was funny, joking, serious, thoughtful and most of all very kind when we spoke. I didn’t know what to expect interviewing this amazing rock star. Thank you, Justin, for taking the time out of your busy “Heart Go Bang Tour” promoting your new Album; “Home”, and allowing me to connect with you on a personal level. You are an inspiration to many! As the Universe would also have it, I was also able to work with the amazing Martin Gollery from Incline Village, NV. Martin was one the teachers at the High School of The Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas where Justin Fustenfeld and Ryan Delahoussaye went to high school. What are the odds? Martin was able to photograph the Blue October show on May 14th at Cargo. He got some really great shots of his former students. I hope you enjoy this interview and the amazing photography of Blue October by Martin Gollery. BLISSBABE.COM

Lyrics from the song Fear on the SWAY album by Blue October.

BlissBabe:

Who was your most influential teacher in high school? Was it Suzanne Phillips Jennings or Sharon Ferranti? Why? What did you lean the most?

Justin Furstenfeld: Both of them were influences, but

I spent more time with Suzanne Phillips Jennings and she was my mentor. I learned so much from Suzanne Phillips just on acting. With Sharon Ferranti, I learned a lot on movement and to get rid of my inhibitions. Sharon was more of a physical type of teacher and she was my movement teacher and director on ‘Age of Discretion’ and I have so much respect for Sharon Ferranti. Suzanne Phillips and I had about 4-5 hours a day to work together for 4 years. If there was one person that I could think of that has influenced me the most and where I am today it would be Suzanne. Suzanne Phillips was about how to get into your character to really live the part. I liked Suzanne because she was an out-of-the-box kind of teacher. She really expected perfection from each person and if you didn’t give it she’d kick you out of the room. I loved that about her! She taught me how to run my business today. You either show up 100% or get out of the room! Some people call me an asshole for it but I learned it from the best and I get what I want out of art because of it. She taught me to connect with myself and lose my inhibitions and go for it and not be scared.

BB: Having toured as a very young man on a stage production “Age of

Discretion,” how did it prepare you for the rigors of what was to come with your success as musician?

JF:

It prepared me because it was such a serious subject matter about AIDS and what it was doing to the world. It brought me into the power of touching people for the right reasons; the power of touching someone’s heart not for attention but for the better good of making them aware of something bigger than themselves.

BB: The Last Wish (Justin’s band in high school) vs. Lead Character in “Age of Discretion”: Are you typically drawn to those types of characters?

JF:

I would say back then I was. Back then I was a teenager living with depression so I didn’t know how to get it out; I guess I was drawn to the tragic characters. These days I love my life so I try to make people laugh now.

BB: Is fatherhood what you thought it would be? Do you feel like you’re a different parent that your parents were?

JF:

I think it’s more than I ever thought it could be. It’s a whole amazing, brilliant life and I try to be as good as a parent because my parents were amazing.

BB: Friendships, band members, life changes…how has your

relationship evolved and maintained so well with Ryan Delahoussaye after all these years? What do you love about it now?

JF:

I love that we’ve come full circle and we’ve been through hell together and we’ve both done horrible things in life and we’ve both lifted each other up in our darkest times and we’ve just always been honest with each other.

BB: What is your favorite charity and why? JF: Music Cares: They help addiction and they put kids and musicians

in rehab. Sky High for St. Jude in Texas, and anything dealing with Cancer. I love all charities.

BB: For parents of children that struggle with mental health issues, I’m 22

I had the chance to catch up with Suzanne Jennings Phillips, Justin's Theater Teacher and here's what she had to say about Justin-

"

I wish I could take credit for any part of Justin's incredible success. He's a wildly talented artist, and he was born that way. He took every exercise to a newly inventive level. His junior year, he played opposite Mireille Enos (The Catch, The Killing ..) in a production of The Diary of Anne Frank. They were magical together. Justin was a joy and a challenge to direct. He made me look good, has a sweet and tender soul, and I love him.

JF:

That’s a really good question. I think we need to listen more and don’t judge a book by its cover. I think that as a society the whole mental health issue is hard because each person is different and everybody has their issues in life whether it be self-doubt, whether it be any insecurities…you know what I’m saying…I think that just being open and honest as you can about mental health and proactive in solutions on mental health. I don’t think there are enough hard asses out there that tell people with depression like, “Hey, get off your ass, go outside and take a walk… you know what I’m saying? Get outside, go get out of your head and let’s do this and I’ll go with you. Get on your medication, let’s take it every single day at the same time and let’s eat right and let’s not drink any alcohol anymore if you have depression because that’s going to make it worse. DO NOT do any drugs on top of depression because that will make it worse and all I’m going to hear from you tomorrow is ‘‘I'm so sad” when actually you’re hung over. Know what I’m saying? I think the fact of the matter is with mental health is that you have to treat it like a heart disease. If you have a heart disease you’re not going to go out and smoke 10 packs of cigarettes and run 10 miles and sit around and eat chicken fried steak all day. You’re going to treat it right so if you have mental problems with depression you’re going to take your vitamins and not drink alcohol, go outside and take a walk and cut all negative people out of your life. Include all positive people and find groups that you can talk with and make yourself available for positivity. That’s the best way I can say it! Wait! One more thing, you have to be proactive with depression. You can’t do what depression wants you to do and sit there in your own shit because you’re going to start stinking. Ya know, you have to be proactive with depression and kick the shit out of it!

BB: What has been your favorite part of your journey with your music and art?

JF:

Seeing how the work ethic of it all and the more healthy I get… the longer I stay off of drugs and alcohol…and the more active I am and the more I live that life, like I just told you, of rigorous honesty and proactive positivity. The more the music becomes so much more of a blessing. SO much more of an amazing beautiful journey. Instead of this regurgitation of pain it’s this hole that just shines with light and I can just spray in on anybody. It’s amazing!

BB: You talk about your wife a lot. What about your wife makes her so strong?

JF: She’s a bad ass! She doesn’t take any of my shit! She met me when

I was a full blown drug addict and alcoholic and she didn’t know who Blue October was when she met me, which was really hot. She said, ‘If you want to be with me you go and clean yourself up,’ so I went and cleaned myself up! I just love her and she is an independent woman who cheers me on but doesn’t sit there and feed my ego. We talk about real things and real plans. She’s a strong woman and the greatest mother I’ve ever seen. And she’s just beautiful!

BB: I know you painted two of your album covers early on. What do

you fill your canvas with these days? Who are you inspired by as an artist?

JF:

My favorite painter of all time is Jean-Michel Basquiat. Some people look at him and go “OH God” but I think he is just brilliant. I don’t paint much these days because I’m out there just living mostly and writing music but when I do it’s…I don’t call myself a painter. I throw paint on a canvas until I see something and then I accentuate on it. I would have to say I’m just a big fan of kelly green so whenever I’m painting these says I always put a lot of kelly green in it.

BB: What celebrity would you paint naked and why? JF: Paint a celebrity naked who would it be and WHY??

BB: It’s kind of off the wall… JF: No, it’s awesome…let me think..oh man.. this is hardcore… BB: let’s come back to it. BB: What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on stage with a fan or on tour?

JF:

I was drunk way back in the day and hung over as hell so I drank 4 Emergen-C packs inside one water bottle and went on stage and during the first song I shit myself. I shit all over myself and I had to play the whole set with shit all over me. Great times! Pretty Cool!

BB: Regarding your most recent tattoo: I know that music from the

UK was a big influence for you, hence the Union Jack tattoo on your chest. Now that Scotland might vote to leave the UK, would you modify your tattoo if that happens?

JF:

I didn’t know anything about Scotland. (Laughter.) They are amazing and they have the best bands that have come out of there!

BB: Canadian Bacon with Pineapple or Pepperoni and Sausage? JF: Pepperoni and Sausage. BB: Your music is very intense, emotionally charged and theatrically delivered. Your fans have followed you on your journey. Some of them I’m sure are experiencing the same things that you went through. You probably helped so many that you don’t even know. What’s the one story a fan has shared that floored you regarding the way Blue October has touched their life?

JF:

There’s so many. I would have to say, there’s a little boy that is dying of cancer and I’m calling him this week and he wants to talk to me before he goes. So I’m going to have to call him this week and I’m going to try to be as positive and as loving a possible and figure out what to say. That’s probably the hardest thing, ya know? There’s so many great stories but this is probably the hardest and most epic.

BB: Star Wars or Star Trek? Boxers, Briefs or boxer-briefs? JF: Neither! I’m not a science fiction dude! It would be something like

Gone Girl or like freaky like Forensic Files. I’m a huge investigative discover fan. I live for that shit! Like 20/20 or Forensic Files, Dateline; 48 Hours, mystery, holy shit... I get excited thinking about it! Boxers that are tight!

BB: We’re really looking forward to your return to Reno! What do you love about performing in Reno/Tahoe?

JF:

I love the energy and the people there are so full of life. I love Reno in a much different way than I like Vegas. There is this style of Reno that is like an old, good Cadillac. Vegas is like a new cadillac and Reno is like an Drop top, old school, Kelly Green Cadillac. I love that shit! The energy and passion in Reno is just amazing! Stay tuned for more exciting interviews from artists, celebs, musicians, movers and shakers worldwide! My interviews will be uncut, up close and personal with your favorite artists! I have a passion for finding out what makes people click! Who would you like me to interview next? Shoot me a message and let’s see what happens! Leslie@BlissBabe.com

ARTOWN BRINGING GLOBAL AND LOCAL ART TO NORTHERN NEVADA

A

rtown is a staple in the Reno/Tahoe community and it has been for more than 20 years; twenty-two, to be exact.

Each July, Artown brings new and vibrant art forms, events, family fun, collaborations, and artists to the Northern Nevada region and beyond. The event brings the community together, as well as attracting others from outside the area. “Our goal is to make it accessible to everyone and with that, our footprint broadens every year,” said Executive Director of Artown, Beth Macmillan. “Reno’s knowledge of the arts after 22 years is greater than it’s ever been before, and with that, the expectations are greater than they have ever been before. We strive to show them things they have never seen and to excite them in new ways with each piece. The better we do, the more they want, and the more we strive to provide them.” Macmillan says her goal is to see the excitement ripple throughout the community for 31 straight days. With satellite venues throughout Reno, Carson City, and more, they hope to continue to reach a broader audience and make it as easy as possible for the region to experience the excitement that is Artown. Each year, Artown starts as a blank slate filled with possibility. The team at Artown works to make the month as diverse as possible, with different headliners and events that keep the variety alive, and keeps the community coming back for more. As McMillan says, it is a puzzle where everything has a place, and everything has a purpose, taking a good six months to put together.

From local creations by chefs and dance companies, to groups from Argentina, Haiti, and Iran, the lineup this year will not disappoint. One group in particular stands out. The Revolution, Prince’s band, is on tour celebrating Prince’s legacy, selling out every venue they play. This event will take place on July 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Bartley Ranch, and it is not to be missed. The band got back together in Minneapolis, MN, performing two shows in recognition of Prince. The popularity of the shows drove them to put together a small tour to revisit the world of Prince with every audience lucky enough to share a night with them. To get tickets to this show, and to learn more about the hundreds of events this July, visit renoisartown.com. This space now makes customizing your own Artown experience possible. It is interactive, vibrant, and shows you exactly what is going on in the community. Artown is truly about enriching the community. As Macmillan says, “My favorite part of this experience is seeing the community come back night after night, seeing them experience the art for the first time — watching them take it all in, that is what it’s all about.” Learn more and plan your own exciting month at renoisartown.com Anastasia Warren (Stasia) is the Marketing Director at The Applied Companies by day, and writer, blogger, and goal-seeker by night. Anastasia strives to tell stories and inspire audiences through her work. On her off time, you can find her listening to podcasts, designing her future home, or exploring Reno/Tahoe.

This year, Artown is introducing even more new aspects to the already exciting event, offering events for kids, seniors, and young adults. There is something for everyone at Artown.

Culture

Long time participant Tyler Hanson explained it: “When you eliminate the performer/audience distinction and invite everyone up on to the stage, the equation just works.”

By: John Halcyon Styn Photos: Eric Schwabel

Eric Schwabel

That equation means that everyone contributes in whatever way they feel called to do so. Some people are crystal clear on what artistic gifts they have to share. Their sculpture, their paintings, their dance. The deep magic of Burning Man is that it teaches us the immense depth and breadth of what artistic creation can be. We can be artistic in the way that we decorate, or dress, or listen. We can be artistic in front of a crowd, or sitting in isolation. Burning Man encourages us to listen to the true inspiration that whispers inside us. We are supported and embraced as we allow that voice to speak, to sing, to roar. No matter what song that comes out of us, if it is authentic, it is valued. There is no “good” and “bad” art at Burning Man. Only miles and miles of expression, from the poetic to the profane, and often both.

B

urning Man has graduated from an edgy, underground gathering to full-blown cultural phenomenon. It has been a punchline in sit-coms and political speeches. It is frequently mentioned as part of the brainstorming and mind-opening paths of Silicon Valley elite. As more people become aware of it, more people add it to their bucket list. However, even though one of Burning Man’s 10 Principles is Radical Inclusion, it also requires those that attend to follow another of its Principles: Participation. Yes, everyone is welcome, but for the experiment to work, attendees must understand that they are not passively riding a safari bus, taking pictures of the beasts. Every one of us plays an active part of the oasis. For years I volunteered as a Greeter, welcoming people to the city. Time after time, I would hear first-time attendees dismiss my attempts to engage them by saying, “Oh, I’m not an artist, I’m just here to check it out.” Wrong answer. Burning Man is not something you “check out.” Burning Man is something you help create. For years the tickets even said, in all-caps, “PARTICIPANTS ONLY. NO SPECTATORS.” And this small, but significant, difference from a traditional ticketed gathering affects every aspect of the event. When Greeting, I would respond to those first-timers by explaining, “There is no difference between my role and yours. In fact, once you get settled, you are invited to come back here to the gate and volunteer as a Greeter, yourself. Or help ANYWHERE where you think the city needs it. You can’t come to Black Rock City to ‘check out’ the crazy people… because YOU are one of the crazy people.” The Participants Only ethos is the reason why Burners are hesitant to use the term “festival” to describe the event. There are no Producers curating the entertainment and selling tickets to an audience. There is no division between those that create and those that consume. Everyone is expected to be host, janitor, medic, masseuse, therapist, emperor, laborer and more. Photo by Christina Erny >

This valuing of personal expression is revolutionary. In a world that designates what is beautiful and mocks everything else, the freedom to share authentically is transformative. For many of us, it is the first time we have ever risked coloring outside our cultural lines. Maybe that takes the form of dressing odd, or scandalous. Or of joining a silly parade. Or of sharing an unusual favorite dish. We are encouraged to tune in to what our gifts are, and then share them. When we do this authentically, we are acting artistically. We are the crazy people. We are the beasts. And we play our perfect role in making Burning Man exactly what it needs to be. So, yes, check it out and know that “it” is the gorgeous well of artistic expression bubbling inside of you, just waiting to pour into our communal watering hole in the middle of the Black Rock Desert. See you at Home!

PAIGE DENIM

J

ean shopping: one of the most difficult shopping excursions for a woman. Where are my ladies at? Can I get an amen?

Here’s how it will typically go: you pick out a few pairs of denim and hit the dressing room. Something about the mix of florescent lighting along with the lunch you just ate can have the jeans not fitting the way you had hoped. The voice in your head is saying “abort mission, abort mission” but you don’t want to surrender, and you know you need a new pair. The majority of women face this exact challenge. Oh, and not to mention the effort it takes to get into every pair of skinny jeans. In fact, trying on jeans is essentially like attending a workout class. Squats, toe touches, and lunges are all completely normal when trying on jeans, so good job to you for getting your stretch and cardio on in the dressing room. Once you get to the point where you find the perfect pair of jeans (e.g. the wash you want, ideal fit on your thighs, and your waist and length that is tailor-made for you), then you have to think, will these stretch out? How does my backside look? Are these pockets in a weird spot? All the questions start flooding into your mind. If only we could count on one brand of jeans to fit all the time, every time. I am here to tell you that the perfect denim has arrived: Paige Denim. Here’s a little background on the brand: The founder and creative director, Paige Adams-Geller, launched her namesake brand in 2004, and it has taken off. There is a fit, wash, and cut for everyone. The former Miss California and fit model had experience trying on different denim for years and she finally decided to launch a denim brand of her own. The question is, what makes the brand so wonderful? Born and raised in Los Angeles, Paige is a California lifestyle collection for men and women offering denim, knits, wovens, outerwear, leather, accessories and much more. Known for the considered and unexpected details, Paige has grown into a design powerhouse offering styles that reflect the dedication to the craft. Paige uses only the finest fabrics and materials while each design is infused with thought-out and considered elements. With a commitment to quality and a passion for creating clothes that you will live in, Paige’s lifestyle collection is sold at fine retailers internationally. In short, Paige Adams Geller does denim right. She is an expert on fit and offers stretch denim that won’t stretch out—there’s an idea—and puts the pockets in the perfect spot to flatter your butt. Genius! My favorite style is the Margot, which is a high-rise skinny cut. They are my go-to jeans for a night out. PAIGE recently collaborated with Rosie Huntington, the beautiful actress and model. The final product? PERFECTION. You can find PAIGE styles online at Paige.com as well as at Marshall’s, Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx.

Rocket Vodka: A New Take On an Old Favorite

S

ince “launching” into the market in 2016, Rocket Vodka has proven that a unique perspective on a staple drink can lead to great things. Founder and formula creator Dariusz Paczuski focused on the three C’s when conceptualizing his vodka business: Customers, Competition, and Company. It’s that basis that allowed him to create an award winning vodka, with a new twist: it’s made with 100% fresh-pressed apples. Paczuski wanted to ensure that his product was something that could be enjoyed by every palate. Why make a vodka that can’t be easily sipped over ice? Rocket Vodka is made to be smooth; so smooth that it doesn’t have the burn that most vodkas do. During his consumer research, Paczuski also discovered that having gluten and sugar-free options were attractive, especially to millennials. This information was not lost on him, and Rocket Vodka is proud to be naturally gluten and sugar-free. Drink it on the rocks, or with a splash of fruit juice, and save yourself calories of another fruity cocktail as an added bonus. When sizing up the competition, Paczuski didn’t leave any stone unturned. Creating a vodka that stands out from the rest means you have to know the market. After following thousands of vodka and general distillers on social media, participating in blind taste tests, and even traveling back to his hometown of Warsaw, Poland, he discovered a largely untapped resource in the world of vodka: apples. You would be correct in thinking that vodka is most commonly made from fermented potatoes, grains, or grapes, but Rocket Vodka’s clean and crisp taste is the result of delicious, fresh-pressed California and Washington apples —along with fresh Sierra Nevada mountain water— fermented in small, perfectly-balanced batches. And what good is a uniquely delicious product without a great company to support it? Well, no good at all, if you ask Paczuski. With a professional background in marketing and a blended mindset of low expectations (the Polish and Norwegian in him), high hopes (a testament to his American spirit), and an athletic work ethic, he has been able to take a dream and make it a reality. After partnering with Dry Diggings Distillery in El Dorado Hills, California, Paczuski was able to test his own proprietary vodka formula in the market in 2016. With three awards under its belt already, including Best Vodka at the California Craft Spirits Competition, Rocket Vodka is sure to be a competitive force to be reckoned with. After all, who really thinks they can beat a rocket to the top? Check out their website at www.rocketvodka.com.

In between all of these things she occasionally finds time to put her thoughts to paper. KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. I’ve always loved this acronym as it has become a recurrent theme in my life. Recently, in an attempt to satisfy my sweet tooth, my taste buds and I toured Reno. I had an epiphany when I realized this well-known phrase also applies to my favorite frozen desserts. I started my tour of locally made and handcrafted summer treats at a place that may surprise many people - the Atlantis Resort and Casino. Here, 40-50 tubs of gelato are made daily for their cafes and restaurants. The flavors are incredibly unique; Cactus Flower, Funky Monkey, and Almond Joy among others. All of the ingredients are always fresh. This was immediately evident. The Pistachio flavor tasted like fresh nuts right out of the bag and the Peach was incredibly smooth and light with little peach pieces in it. Those early mornings spent by the Atlantis staff making fresh gelato have paid off. The first stop was a success and my taste buds were pleased. My second stop was a smaller, lesser known venue in Reno. However after meeting Dillon Vance, the young entrepreneur behind Rolled Mountain Creamery, and trying his delicious ice cream rolls, I imagine this will not be the case for long. Dillon discovered the technique for making his ice cream rolls while serving abroad in the Marine Corps. He wanted to bring this unique way of serving ice cream to northern Nevada. Despite being a new business, he has achieved great success. The instant popularity of Rolled Mountain Creamery is likely due to his obvious passion for the process, attention to detail, and the quality of the ingredients. There are already two Rolled Mountain Creamery locations in Reno. Both have two machines, an abundance of flavor options, and of course they make their ice cream with the good stuff: real vanilla bean, real sugar, and heavy cream. Be sure to go at least once, and don’t forget your chopsticks! rolledmountaincreamery.com Next up was Simple Ice Cream Sandwiches in Midtown, Reno. Hoch Family Creamery in Minden, NV supplies the cream for what may have been the best and most unique ice cream sandwich I’ve ever had. The blueberry ice cream was so creamy it tasted like muffin batter. The icing on the proverbial cake was

that it was sandwiched between a Doughboys Donut. Simple Ice Cream Sandwiches has partnered with local bakery Doughboys Donuts to provide what may be the sweetest partnership in all of Reno. For only $4 per sandwich, I can’t wait to go back and try them all! simpleicecreamsandwiches.com Finally, I stopped by IceCycle Creamery. IceCycle also has two locations in Reno and officially began their business in 2014. The flavors in this creamery are as unique as the story of the creamery itself. The original store front was a bicycle with a freezer on the back. Thus, the name “IceCycle” was born. Innovative flavors include, but are certainly not limited to, Chocolate Salted Lavender, Fried Chicken and Waffle Cones, Earl Grey, and Maple Bacon. The shops’ owners are proud Nevada natives so fellow Nevadans will love the hometown feel and pride of an ice cream shop with a Home Means Nevada flavor. I have often wished I was a Nevada native, and the fresh sage and pinenuts in this flavor made me wish this once more. Regardless of my heritage, I will be back and will most likely be on my bike. icecyclecreamery.com Cool Haus Ice Cream Sandwiches and Bliss Pops are two companies also in the frozen treats market. Neither have a retail store in Reno but both have regional ties. Cool Haus with headquarters located in Culver City, CA, is sold in local grocery stores and has one of the most creative business stories I have ever heard. Try one of their sandwiches and as a bonus, you will learn something cool about architecture. Bliss Pops is an exceptional popsicle company, in the heart of San Francisco, that is striving to take a more natural, healthier approach to the classic popsicle by using fresh ingredients and adding a Mexican twist. Bliss Pops are the best way to feel satisfied and healthy after eating a popsicle. cool.haus, iloveblisspops.com/home As Leonardo DaVinci said, “Simplicity is sophistication.” As it turns out, simplicity is also fresh, local, and handmade. The results are some incredibly delicious ice cream and gelato. For those of us lucky enough to live locally, it gives us the chance to get some incredibly delicious ice cream. I’ll take a KISS for that!

CORNER ~

I

recently had the privilege to compete on Beat Bobby Flay on Food Network, something that has been on my bucket list for a long time. The experience allowed me to think about how I could become better at my craft. I learned a lot from preparing for and taping the show, but ultimately not beating Bobby. It prompted me to share some tips on how you can up your game to become a better cook at home. Have Focus When you’re preparing a dish, you need to have a single concept, yet with more than one component. For instance, if you’re preparing a Moroccan dish, you’ll want to have Moroccan sides so that your one concept is complemented by ingredients that keep that dish true-to-concept. (A Tandoori chicken will have a Harrissa caramelized cauliflower and ginger curry chickpeas instead of mashed potatoes.) Stay consistent throughout your dish and keep that focus. Get the Food Hot to the Table Many people struggle with this one. You’ll need to prep your dishes and stagger them accordingly. For example, you know you can stop the cooking process on a vegetable, but you cannot stop a steak from cooking. Plus, you want your processes to come together at the same time. If you’re making a steak dinner, prepare your mashed potatoes first and them hold them in an oven at 125 degrees. Then you can cook your steak before your asparagus on the grill at a half or whole temperature below what you want it to be and let it rest in a small pan by your stove. Lastly, fire up your asparagus, slice your steak, and plate everything at the end. Up Your Presentation Game A great ProTip is to add one restaurant trick to your plate. This is more than a garnish; it’s an edible component that you can prepare ahead of time. Say you want to garnish your steak with fried leeks. Ahead of making your main dish, julienne the leeks, dust them with flour, fry them and set them aside. Then you can garnish your steak at the very end and sprinkle the fried leeks with chives to finish off your dish, creating a great presentation element. roundaboutgrill.com Happy cooking! 36

TRANSCEND INTERIORS IS MUSIC TO HER EARS

A

Charlotte Michaels

ccording to Charlotte Michaels, owner of Transcend Interiors in Reno, a piece of furniture is not just something that sits in your home—it’s an individual piece of art.

“Somebody said to me a long time ago, ‘You should live your life artistically. You should live your life like it’s a prayer,’” recalls Michaels. “And when you really think about that—being in the moment and really taking the time to place your items in your surroundings—it should be an expression of yourself and functionally accurate.”

Left to Right: Alexandra, Charlotte Michaels & Page Campu

Interior design is something that comes naturally to Michaels, though it was never something she envisioned herself doing. A music teacher by training, she has found that music and interior design are not very different after all. “Its another way for me to exercise that creative side.” Michaels explains. “It’s become visual now, but we use the same words. You talk about timbre, and you talk about display, distance, and harmony, and also about balance and scale. It’s almost like interior design, to me, is music transcended.” This beautiful merging of her two worlds led to the opening of her business in July 2016, and a consignment shop, Transcend Again, in 2017. Each day her team strives to breathe new life into the customer’s surroundings. The name says it all—to “transcend” is to be greater, better, or stronger than before. And with the team at Transcend Interiors, you will find a partnership to help you accomplish just that. Sometimes it takes more than one or two sets of eyes to create the best result, which is why Michaels, along with her certified interior designer and her operations manager, treat every large project as a team effort. If, at the end of the day, the ladies at Transcend Interiors have helped you to refresh and renew your space, they have done their job. They won’t settle for anything less than complete satisfaction. “You will invest between sixty and two hundred thousand dollars in your interior, in a middle-income house, over your lifetime—easy,” said Michaels. “What we’re suggesting is to do that with a plan. If you want to buy everything now, great. If you want do spread it out over a year, that’s okay. At least you have a plan.” For all things design, Transcend Interiors is, quite literally, your one-stop shop for a space that is balanced, refreshed, and renewed. Visit their showroom at 716 South Virginia Street in Reno, or online at www.trancendinteriors.net.

E N T E RTA I N I N G YOUR KIDS AT HOME

A

ccording to the New York Times, Steve Jobs did not let his own children use the iPad. He commonly warned that technology should be limited for a kid’s use at home. Mr. Jobs was not alone. Numerous technology chief executives strictly limit their children’s screen time, often banning all technology during the school week. In addition to the obvious problems of addiction, there are other harmful dangers—like viewing pornography and bullying—that kids are exposed to through their various devices. According to recent research, teenagers are spending an average of nine hours a day on their devices while those under 13 are spending approximately six hours. The research further shows that children under 10 are the most likely to become addicted. The best advice you can follow is to not allow younger children any technology time during the school week. For those younger ages, weekend use should be limited to no more than two hours total. Younger teenagers should only be allowed to use computers during the school week for homework only.

"Mark Zuckerberg himself hired a Chief Learning Officer whose job responsibilities include teaching employees how to stay off of Facebook."

If all parents were going to follow the guidelines of most CEO’s that run technology companies, they would forbid teenagers from using all forms of social media because of the amount of time they spend on the sites and the type of content they post or are exposed to. These same CEO’s typically do not provide internet access on devices until their children reach age 16. They also recommend keeping all technology out of their children’s bedrooms. The American Psychiatric Association reports that in the last 10 years, there has been a 42% increase in ADHD in children. While they cannot yet conclude that this increase is tied to electronic devices, the studies are underway and it seems plausible a connection will be made. Mark Zuckerberg himself hired a Chief Learning Officer whose job responsibilities include teaching employees how to stay off of Facebook. So what is a parent to do to keep their children of all ages entertained at home without technology? The question is simple; while your children might resist at first, go back to the memories of your own childhood and start there. Play games with your children—actual board games. They will love it. Build puzzles and forts together. Go outside and play a game of flag football. Don’t allow technology of any kind while these activities are happening or you will defeat the purpose of showing your children a better way. If they are older, play Black Jack or poker, which enhances their math skills and helps them learn to strategize and read faces. There is so much fun to be had with your children and the iPhones make them irritable and distant. Take a chance in your home and try some technology-free nights. You will be amazed at the connection you can establish in just one night. katiecoombsuncommonsense.com

CRUNCH TIME WITH BLISS BABE CRUNCH FITNESS PROFILE

BB chat with Bliss Babe! What location do you train in?

: Hi Jacqueline! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to

JJ:

I train in the Walnut Creek location. It’s a new facility that opened about seven months ago. I am a personal trainer that has a regular clientele. I have been personal training for about two years now. Before Crunch, I started off two other clubs in the Walnut Creek area for about a year and a half and then I just joined Crunch three months ago. I’ve always been interested in health and fitness ever since I was out of high school. I taught myself how to work out and I really worked hard on my physique over the last few years in addition to helping my friends and co-corkers with their diets. The most successful client that I have had has lost over 50lbs! Before this career change I earned a degree from the Art Institute in San Francisco in Fashion Marketing and Management. I was working in corporate retail in Old Navy’s office in San Francisco in the merchandising department, as well as Charlotte Russe in San Francisco. I realized that corporate life isn’t for me so I made the career change to become a personal trainer and realized this is my passion.

BB: JJ:

What is a typical day like for you at Crunch?

A typical day starts at 6:30am or 7:30am. I have a few clients until two or three in the afternoon. I leave the gym for a few hours, work out, and then I come back at night to train more clients from four until about 8:00pm

JJ:

I really like the company goals and values. It’s one of the gyms I really wanted to work at when I started but I didn’t have right amount of experience, so I started at a few other places until I had the experience.

BB: JJ:

What is it that you love about Crunch Fitness that sets itself apart from any other gym?

I love the upbeat atmosphere. It’s fun, and it has unique diversity. I love the different classes and what they offer the members. It’s a reasonable gym membership, too. The trainers are well educated and it’s unlike any other gym I’ve ever been to!

BB: JJ:

What is your advice to newbies trying to reach their goals?

Stay persistent and focused, nothing worth having happens overnight. Embrace the journey, whether it’s a fitness goal or anything you desire in life.

BB: JJ:

Favorite Cheat meal: I have a huge sweet tooth. I love Ice cream and pancakes!

Favorite body part to work: Leg day. Building glutes, legs, and lower body!

BB: JJ:

What type of physical activity do you like to do outside the gym?

I love to hike when it’s really nice out, and I love to snowboard at Northstar and Lake Tahoe at least six times a year.

BB: JJ:

Have you competed in a fitness show, and do you have any desire to do so?

I have not competed yet but I would really like to, hopefully by the end of this year or early next year. This year I am focused on building my business and clientele, then next year I will focus on a show.

BB: JJ: BB:

What is on your playlist right now?

I usually listen to Pandora - Hip-hop to House Music. Whatever I’m in the mood for. Cardio time is great for House Music. Why did you choose Crunch Fitness?

ne of the most coveted body parts in the summer for women and men are abs. Beautiful, bare, tightly toned abs. They aren't easy to get, but they sure are worth the effort it takes! Think bikinis, mid drift baring tops, tight tank tops pulling over those fab abs. Not only are abs gorgeous, but a strong core is critical to having a healthy, well balanced body. First, know that you can do 1000 crunches a day, but if you don't make some adjustments to your nutrition, you will never uncover those abs that you so covet. Here are a few tips to make your abs come popping through:

San Francisco

A

s the Goin’ 80 Girl, I find myself in the City by the Bay often. San Francisco has a special place in my heart because I lived there for three years. I loved it. The food, the culture, the people… all were fantastic. But as magical as I found SF, I’d be lying if I told you I liked the summer there. I hated it. Don’t get me wrong; visiting the City when home is unbearably hot is a novel relief for a day or two. But living there in summer was hard for me. It’s cold and dreary, and Vitamin D levels plummet. Mark Twain wasn’t lying when he said, “the coldest winter I ever had was a summer in San Francisco.” What the City lacks in June and July it makes up for tenfold in August through October. The “Indian Summer” welcomes a dizzying blend of beautiful weather, wonderful music, lovely flowers, and amazing food. While I usually travel for the food—and SF has world renowned cuisine on every corner—during these months, it’s a waste to talk about any activity that happens indoors, including eating. During these golden months, a picnic lunch in a glorious place seems indulgent rather than inexpensive. A green sunlit outdoor space combined with the artisan grocery stores lining its perimeter is downright luxurious. I’m speaking, of course, of Golden Gate Park. When I first moved to SF, I did very little research. I figured I’d find great things through trial and error. That worked for me in the long run, but I may have explored more of the park sooner had I known more about it. Instead, in training for a half marathon, every week I added a mile and a surprising new attraction! (While I do sometimes regret my pitiful lack of knowledge, it kept my training fun and interesting.) “Oooooo, 8 miles today. What will I discover?” Because I was running, most of what I saw was a wide array of unexpected animals. These included a group of turtles sunning themselves on a turtle-shaped rock, a coyote running through a large crowd of terrified tourists in broad daylight, and the buffalo who lived exactly 3.5 miles from my apartment. One of my last runs, 46

JULY & AUGUST 2017

BLISSBABE.COM

I stumbled upon three Dutch wind mills. Covered in the brightest fuchsia bougainvillea, they obviously jumped straight out of an antique European oil painting, just for my training. But the ultimate discovery (I’m ashamed to admit) was on the day of my final, 12 mile training run. For a travel writer I have a terrible sense of direction, and I was stunned to realize the scenery was opening up to the Pacific Ocean. My jaw dropped. The day was perfect, and the view, spectacular. Ocean Beach is truly a sight to behold—especially, I imagine, when you aren’t expecting it. That stupid day when I realized how blonde I had been about my surroundings, I found myself breathless—and it had nothing to do with the run. There is white sandy beach for miles and on either side is a twisting turning maze of meandering hiking trails with views of dazzling waters and crashing waves and some truly fabulous photo ops. Well worth the 12 miles. Golden Gate Park is more than just a park. As a matter of fact, the attractions are too many to mention. The California Academy of Sciences (which, incidentally has a Christmas exhibit for a child of any age, complete with live reindeer); the De Young Museum, which features both modern and historic art; the Japanese Tea Gardens, an outdoor enclosure of koi ponds, statues, and an afternoon tea service to complete your experience; a rose garden, almost always a peaceful riot of color where a good book seems almost a requirement; and the list goes on. Of all the things to do in Golden Gate Park, during the Indian summer, the festivals are worth your time and money. Outside Lands is a three day festival hosted on the polo fields. It is usually sunbathers’ dream weather, with street food that makes you want to chase down the food trucks on a daily basis, and a headliner worthy of the Greek. Then there’s the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival with people for miles, music reflecting our Western roots, and it’s FREE. You can’t beat that. I think everyone who visits probably leaves at least a part of their heart in San Francisco. I know I did. And hey, if nothing else I learned while natural discovery is great fun, when you travel you don’t usually have the luxury of years to explore. Better to do some research and reap all the benefits of whatever I-80 city you happen to be visiting by knowing a bit about your destination. thehungrydater.com

A Time for Coming Together

I

’ve been told by some people that they think that giving flowers is a waste of money. “They just die,” they tell me. Personally, I think it is just horribly sad and breaks my heart that someone would think that giving flowers is a waste. And I swear I don’t just say that simply because I sell flowers! ABOUT TOWN DEB'S MUST-SEE MIAMI LOCALES

T

he food, beauty, and culture of Miami are truly something to be experienced. When I started planning my trip to the “Magic City” it didn’t take long before my list of must-see spots overflowed the page. It wasn’t until I set foot on the streets of Miami that I realized no amount of list making would ever cover all of the amazing things the city has to offer! Whether you have one day or one week to take in the sights, sounds, and smells of Miami, there are a few things that you can’t miss. Here are About Town Deb’s must-see Miami locales.

LITTLE HAVANA

If you’ve ever had a desire to visit Cuba, you’ll want to make Little Havana part of your trip. The Latin culture infused with the beauty of Miami make for an experience not to be missed. At its heart, Little Havana is a multicultural gem filled with amazing food and drink, music, and art. And if you happen to be there on the last Friday of the month, you’ll get to experience Viernes Culturales, or Cultural Fridays—a mix of street art, entertainment, and the delicious flavors of Latin America. If you’re planning to visit in March, you must attend the El Festival de la Calle Ocho, the largest Hispanic street festival in the southeastern United States. #AboutTownDeb Top Pick: The Ball and Chain for delicious mojitos, dancing, and live music! Bayside Marketplace in Downtown Miami There’s a good reason that Bayside Marketplace is one most visited places in Downtown Miami. As the hub for the Miami area, Downtown has a little bit of everything to offer. It serves as a business center, a highly trafficked port for cruise goers, and an area rich in history for tourists and locals alike. Right in the heart of Downtown Miami is The Bayside Marketplace—a waterfront locale to host shopping, dining, and exotic music and culture. You’ll want to leave plenty of time to take a cruise along the Biscayne Bay, or a bus tour through the area. Your feet will quit on you long before your excitement for the Marketplace does! So take advantage of the local water taxis and extend your time at the Bayside Marketplace. #AboutTownDeb Top Pick: Take in the nightlife at Bayside and dance all night to the local Latin music!

MIAMI BEACH

Not to be confused with the high energy of South Beach, Miami Beach—on the North end—is a much different atmosphere. Between the North Shore Historic District—beautiful old buildings given a fresh look and purpose—and the calming sound of the ocean, Miami Beach is a relaxing escape from some of the hustle and bustle of the City. There is no shortage of delicious food, shopping, or room on the stunning family friendly beach. If a relaxing escape is what you’re looking for, you must make Miami Beach part of your trip! And the best part? No car needed to take in all of sights! #AboutTownDeb Top Pick: The Historic District for amazing sightseeing and history! One of the best decisions I made while in Miami was touring the city by bus. I had a blast learning more about Miami’s history in between stops. The ability to hop on and off as you want means you have the freedom to spend more time in the areas that truly speak to you and relax as you make your way to your next destination. LUXURY LAKE CLUB: THE RITZ CARLTON LAKE TAHOE BREAKS GROUND ON NEW EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY

S

ummer is here. For Reno-Tahoe locals and visitors alike, that means absorbing the sun’s bright rays reflecting off of Lake Tahoe and enjoying all the area has to offer.

And the season’s selection just got better. The Ritz Carlton, Lake Tahoe— the first and only AAA Five Diamond resort in the Lake Tahoe region—is constructing a new lakefront project called Lake Club. “The launch of the Lake Club will provide our guests with luxury amenities and private access to Lake Tahoe along with limitless summer recreational activities,” said Joseph Mattioli, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. “The addition of the Lake Club will allow The Ritz-Carlton to offer a one-of-a-kind luxury resort experience, one that includes both direct access to the mountain and to the lake, a first for the Lake Tahoe region.” Among offering guests direct beach access, the Lake Club will offer a private boat pier with buoys to launch water spots and recreational activities including boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boards. Guests will enjoy the outdoor whirlpool, fire pit, and barbecue in addition to use of the modern showers and changing facilities. The new property—featuring a 650 square-foot indoor gathering area and bar, a 600 square-foot ground-floor dining terrace, a 950 square-foot upper-level dining deck, and a 2,000 square-foot expansive lawn area with panoramic views of the lake—will be designed by local architect Clare Walton. The space will couple organic materials such as store and cedar with contemporary details of steel and glass. “Our intention is to create a space that complements the rugged landscape with a clean, modern aesthetic,” said Walton, principal architect of Tahoe City-based Walton Architecture + Engineering. “The transparency of our design allows guests to connect immediately with the setting and flow seamlessly between interior and exterior social gathering spaces.” The Lake Club will be an amenity for resort guests and is located at 7170 North Lake Blvd. in Tahoe Vista, Calif. Construction is set to begin in early June, open to guests later this summer.

BEAUTY IS IN THE JOURNEY B

y age three, Karina Pasian was playing Chopin and Mozart. By age 13, Interscope, Big Boy, and Def Jam got into a bidding war to sign her. By age 17, Karina released her debut album, “First Love,” which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B album. She’s a “Star Search” winner. She’s a classically trained pianist. She speaks and sings Spanish, Italian, French, Turkish, and Arabic. She trained as a vocalist at the Professional Performing Arts School in New York City. She’s the first person of Dominican descent to perform at the White House. Karina’s godfather is also world renowned American Record Producer, Quincy Jones and has been a huge influence in her career since she was a little girl. She’s been described as the “next Rhianna,” “Alicia Keys-ish,” and “kind of like Esperanza Spalding.” Her sound ranges from soft and subtle to strong and street, piano ballads to hip hop jams.

“Quincy Jones always told me that in order to write music you have to live, you have to have something to pull from”, said Karina. Since debuting “First Love,” Karina also released many digital singles and two versions of her EP titled “Trips To Venus - Volume 1” and the “Christmas Edition.” Now, she’s working on her latest EP, “Interlude,” which is set to release by fall 2017. With World Artists United, a boutique 360 multimedia, artist development and digital branding company based out of Los Angeles, Karina also performed at TEDx Women, Harvard Masquerade Ball, and events during the Cannes Film Festival, laying the foundation for the release of her next project. To truly tell the story of Karina’s reinvention, WAU CEO Jalen James Acosta wanted to film a documentary about her journey, using video to capture Karina’s compelling and inspirational story for new audiences to connect with.

She is talent, personified. But, her path hasn’t been easy. You’d think having Jay Z lock you in the Def Jam recording studios, insisting you sign with his company would guarantee a lasting career. Unfortunately for both Karina and Def Jam, that didn’t turn out to be the case. On November 1, 2008, tragedy struck when Shakir Stewart, Karina’s talent rep and Def Jam Executive Vice President, died by suicide at thirty-four years old. This tremendous personal and professional loss profoundly affected her. Karina wrote a song dedicated to Shakir’s memory called “Solitaire,” which was released almost six years to the day of his death. With the song, Karina hoped to raise awareness of depression and suicide. Proceeds from the song benefited the Jed Foundation for Suicide Prevention in Teens and Young Adults. After Shakir’s death, Karina took time away from the music industry to focus on herself. “I took a break from the music to get in touch with that inner gut voice — that intuition,” Karina told ratedrnb.com in a 2015 interview. “I didn’t think I was living life. I became stagnant — almost wanted to give up and wasn’t feeling inspired. Taking a break from it really helped rebuild the passion.” Now, Karina is finding her voice as an adult, while living and working in Los Angeles. “I have been just trying to figure out who I am as an artist and who I am as a person,” Karina said in the same interview. “I’ve been working on my new sound, writing for other people and just living life.”

“I have been just trying to figure out who I am as an artist and who I am as a person,”

“No one has ever told Karina’s story – the challenges she’s experienced, and the potential she has today,” Rachel Karry, Co-Founder and VP of Business Development said. The first part of the documentary, “The Beauty is in the Journey,” came out on YouTube in May and two other installments will follow. What’s next for Karina? She’s hoping for more collaborations like the ones she’s worked on in the past with Trey Songz, Sammie, Lil’ Mama and Wyclef Jean. Drake and Stevie Wonder top her wish list. Bliss Babe Magazine will be keeping an eye on this rising star as she ascends to the level of other A-list performers, becoming a household name to the likes of Rhianna, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys. Karina exudes the passion in her lyrics which are certain to engage the masses. Connections made, career on point. Here’s to what’s to come! BB The Beauty is in the Journey! WHOSE JOURNEY AM I ON, ANYWAY? FINDING YOUR BLISS

I

’m not exactly sure how I ended up here, but I can certainly say the journey is getting interesting. With a catalog of music being picked up by today’s top artists, the next generation of international music superstars, a decked-out film studio, a Super Bowl executive team, numerous new luxury and high-tech products being launched, and new strategic partnerships forming daily, the team just signed the next Michael Jordan type athlete and is now a part of three major Hollywood films. This journey I am on is exciting. I’ve come a long way from home over the years. When people ask me how I got here, I’m not sure what to say. Confronted by a bewildered look when I explain the path I’ve chosen, it’s clear that it’s somewhat abnormal. How did I go from a social worker in Detroit to an owner and executive of World Artists United, a music and entertainment company in Los Angeles? The choices I make don’t always align with the status quo and sometimes I’m left questioning myself. Is my intuition leading on the right path? Will these seemingly random experiences amount to something great? After years of battling self-doubt and comparison, I had to start asking myself, “Whose journey am I on, anyway? When my ego pokes its head out, I must become aware, catch it in the act, or accept the consequences; none of which is easy. However, my hunger to embrace the world and break the perceived limitations is what motivates me. I want to empower others to seek self-awareness and find the courage to encourage others to do the same. Today I am the Co-Founder and Vice President of Business Development of World Artists United, a company with an embedded mission to create empowering content. I met my business partner, Jalen James Acosta, in 2014 while living in Miami. After a brief conversation, we realized our 58

similar paths. I had invested in an entertainment company, but his focus was targeted at globally connected, multi-cultural millennial music lovers. I was intrigued by the idea of creating content with a positive, inclusive vibe used to unite and inspire an international audience through music and powerful media. It’s empowering artists to “eat from their dream,” as Jalen always says. People frequently ask me if there was a particular thing I did to get where I am. The truth is, every bit of knowledge I gain, each new person I meet, every failure, and every success has provided some navigation. It’s called the compound effect. As your journey continues there will be challenges and there will be success. There will be happiness and sadness. In order to win, you must commit to your growth and your vision. When you start questioning things and comparing yourself to others, you must ask, “Whose journey am I on, anyway?” Bliss Babe had a chance to catch up with Rachel and ask her a few questions while she was at the Cannes Film Festival on tour with World Artist United.

BB: What are your limiting thoughts that troll through your mind on the daily and how do you put them in their place? RK: My limiting thoughts are getting smaller but I used to think I wasn't that smart, to be honest. I didn't fit into the box at school and I was bored; I engaged and couldn't focus on the monotonous work. I needed challenge, I needed creativity, I needed to inquire and explore. It wasn't until I was about 27 that I discovered that I was truly an entrepreneur at heart.

BB: Do you practice any type of meditation? How often? RK: To be honest it should be more intentional and more often, but I use meditative practices throughout the day to cope with challenges. I regularly take

at least a few moments to focus on my breathing, and close my eyes and reset my intention throughout the day to cope with challenges. Although I think about 20 to 30 minutes of meditation today is ideal, taking five minutes randomly throughout the day really helps to center me and balance my emotions

BB: What skill would you love to teach someone younger than you navigating through life to help them empower themselves? What did you wish someone would have taught you when you were younger?

RK: I wish someone would have taken the time to teach me meditation when I was a child, I know I would have made many different choices and had an easier time dealing with self-conscious beliefs and doubts in myself.

BB : What is your mission and long term goal with “Who’s Journey Am I On” campaign? Will you be producing ongoing classes or workshops

nationwide or offer coaching? TedEx talks? Motivational Speaker speaking at events for a fee?

RK: My intention with “ Whose Journey...” is to give people a sense of belief in themselves; because their WHY is so big, they forget about any insecurities in the mind. The heart and brain takes over and the level of intrinsic motivation becomes unstoppable.

BB:How can people follow more of your journey? Do you blog? Web site? RK: WAU website and my IG @iamrachelkarry and @worldartistsunitedtv BB: What is your biggest failure and what has been your biggest success? RK: My biggest failure has yet to happen, but I'm prepared for the fall. I have a love/hate relationship with failure; it's sucks, but I know I need it to grow. BB: Who would you love to represent for WAU? Who is on your Vision Board? Celebrity? Speaker? Female Entrepreneur? RK: Bruno Mars is our next target! BB: What is a typical day like for you? RK: My days are so random. I could be planning a music tour one day, filming a music video the next, planning a rebrand or writing my book. I love to edit videos now and definitely want to do more documentaries. I'm typically living out of a suitcase and meeting as many people as possible. My daily goal is to make two new key contacts.

BB: What is your fitness and health routine? RK: Most days I jump rope and do calisthenics. My workouts are short and intense. I love to be on the beach when I'm exercising. I love to take that time to connect with nature.

BB: What rituals do you practice daily to keep you focused? RK: I enjoy writing in my journal and I always try to reach ten pages per day. Ten pages per day equals about 10-12 books per year.... certainly enough to

change anyone. I'm a sponge for new info. I also love blogs about the music and entertainment space. I typically read at least one per day so by the end of the year I have read 365! Anyone can reach the slight edge philosophy..... just little by little. If you change 1% per day, you are nearly 3.5 times the person you were the year before!

BLINDED BY PASSION: ONE COUPLE'S PURSUIT OF MAKING THE PERFECT PINOT NOIR

E

very wine has a story. Some stories inspire, astound, impress, and endear wine drinkers. These stories nearly always involve tremendous sacrifices, heartache, and challenges. Seldom are they rags to riches endeavors; however, the truly great stories produce exceptional wines. It is these stories and the wines behind them that Cellar Angels shares with their members. One such story is that of Kim Vance, founder and winemaker of Zoetic Wines. I first met Kim and David Vance on a steep hillside vineyard in the famed Russian River Valley area of Sonoma, CA. The vineyard was owned by a world-renowned Pinot Noir producer who was allowing fledgling winemaker Kim to source fruit. The producer, whom I cannot name in print, produces some of the finest Pinot Noir in the world. And to Kim’s astonishment, they said yes when she simply picked up the phone, explained her story, and asked if she could craft a pinot noir with their fruit. That’s the thing about the wine industry; it’s filled with titans extending hands to lift up newcomers as it elevates the industry as a whole, and Kim had quite a story. Kim and David moved to California from Houston, TX. Each had a flourishing career: Kim in financial services and David in technology and cyber security. However it was Kim who was drawn to the majestic beauty

of the California wine region. The rolling hills, glorious wineries, and fantastic wines can penetrate one’s soul whereby you will stop at nothing from identifying a manner to be involved in the wine industry. This chance came for Kim, when in 2008, her drive and determination led her to seek out an opportunity as a harvest crew intern. She was a natural and drawn to the entire process. In 2009, she worked another harvest, this time in the Russian River Valley, and in 2010, another harvest in Napa. She was hooked. She and David soon picked up everything they owned and moved to California for Kim to pursue her dream and passion of crafting worldclass Pinot Noir. Her dream is now a reality via their winery Zoetic Wines. The word zoetic is an adjective meaning of or relating to life, living, vital. For many of us the enjoyment of fine wine, the conversations surrounding this enjoyment, and the people in which they are shared, are indeed vital. We’re thankful Kim agrees and believe after your first sip of Zoetic wines, you will too. cellarangels.com Visit Zoetic’s website at www.zoeticwines.com Martin Cody is the founder of Cellar Angels, which leverages 20 years of wine industry experience to deliver the best wines not distributed to stores.
