THE DE QUEEN BEE, THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 2013
Welcome to Sevier County Sevier County was formed Oct. 17, 1828. Arkansas's 16th county, it was named for U.S. Senator Ambrose Sevier. Sevier is a transitional county, ranging from the Little River low lands on the south end to the Ouachita Mountains in the north. On its west side Sevier County borders the Arkansas - Oklahoma state line. Sevier touches four, although most people think only three,Arkansas counties. Sevier borders Polk County on the north, Little River on the south and Howard on the east. Sevier
County also touches Hempstead County at a point in Lake Millwood where corners of Sevier, Howard, Hempstead and Little River meet. Sevier County includes portions of four rivers. Little River forms the southern county line and Saline River the eastern county line. The Cossatot and Rolling Fork Rivers flow through the county. All four rivers have been dammed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, forming four nearby lakes. De Queen Lake, Rolling Fork River, lies completely
within the county. Dierks Lake, Saline River, is divided between Sevier and Howard Counties. A portion of Lake Millwood, Little River, is in the southeast corner of Sevier County. Gillham Lake, Cossatot River, lies a few miles north of the Sevier-Polk County line. Originally Sevier County covered a much larger area than the present boundary encloses. Parts of Miller, Little River, Howard and Polk Counties were once in Sevier. The original county seat was Paraclifta. Some of the
earliest settlements in the county were Brownstown, Dilworth, Red Colony, Norwoodville, Falls Chapel, Ben Lomond, and Walnut Springs. Lockesburg became the county seat in 1867. Lockesburg's fortunes declined when a railroad from Kansas City, Mo., to Port Arthur, Tex., bypassed the town. That project was the brain child of Kansas City businessman Arthur Stilwell, who received much needed financial assistance from a coffee merchant from the Netherlands, Jan de Goeijen.

Welcome to Sevier County choice. Stilwell's railroad was reorganized as the Kansas City Southern Railroad in 1900. In 1915 the Sevier County seat was moved to De Queen after local businessmen promised $10,000 to construct a courthouse. De Queen remains the largest municipality in Sevier County. Four other communities are incorporated: Lockesburg, Horatio, Gillham and Ben Lomond. Historically Sevier County is known as “The Land of Lakes”, “The Land of Fruits and Flowers” and “The Home of Friendly
People.” Sevier County provides fishing, water sports, camping, hunting, golf and a park system for all outdoor enthusiasts. De Queen Lake is a clear, clean, mountain lake and offers swimming, waterskiing, diving, camping and fishing. Dierks Lake has fishing, boating, picnicking, camping, swimming and sightseeing. For the bass fisherman, there is no place like Lake Millwood, For those who enjoy a white-water challenge you will definitely want to visit the Cossatot River.
If wildlife is your favorite past time you will not want to miss visiting the Pond Creek National Wildlife Refuge. For photographers and plain old sightseers, the choices range from lakes to mountains. The Sevier County Historical Society's museum covers the county's early history from 1828 to 1940 and is a must stop for the history buff. Sevier County has a cornucopia of dining choices: fast food, home-style, Italian, great steaks and authentic Mexican cuisine.

The railroad was laid further to west, running close to the settlement of Hurrah City. Hurrah City evolved into a new settlement that Stilwell named de Goeijen. The name was Americanized into De Queen. De Queen was incorporated July 9, 1897. Three months later, Oct. 8, 1897, Jan de Goeijen visited the town named in his honor. Early De Queen did not fare well. Two years after it was founded, 54 businesses were destroyed in a huge fire. When rebuilding began, brick rather than wood was the material of
