City of Harlem celebrates opening of new library

BY CAITLIN BOLAND ccarpenter@mcduffieprogress.com

The Columbia County Library - Harlem Branch held its grand opening and ribbon cutting on May 31. The library, which is part of the Greater Clarks Hill Regional Library System, was completed in early May after approximately one year of construction. According to Columbia County Administrator Scott Johnson, the budget for the library was $5.2 million but the finished product totaled only $4.2 million. He said the county received a $2 million grant from the state and the remaining cost was covered with SPLOST dollars. The City of Harlem donated the land. Architect David Dixon and builders Clifton Construction built the new library. Harlem Mayor Bobby Culpepper thanked the citizens of Harlem who took part in the urban redevelopment visioning process. “Out of that process came the vision for this facility in this area,” Culpepper said. “Second, I’d like to thank the City Council that bought into that vision and made hard decisions in the face of voters and citizens that did not see this vision.” Culpepper also thanked the Columbia County Board of Commissioners, County Administrator Scott Johnson, the voters for passing SPLOST and the state legislators. “Something like this doesn’t happen in a back room with one or two people,” Culpepper said. “Today we are here because of that. I’d like to think that this is the model the citizens would want of their govern-

This is the kind of project that creates synergy.” Officials from the Georgia Public Library Service also were in attendance. “This is my first visit to Harlem, and when I came into town, I drove by the small library and thought oh what a cute library,” said Jessica Everingham, assistant state librarian for library and development for GPLS. “I drove past this building, and my jaw dropped. This is probably one of the most beautiful libraries I’ve ever seen in such a small town. This building will be a great asset to the community. This library is a lifeline to the world and all the information in it.” Mary Lynn Maner, director of libraries in Columbia County and director of the Greater Clark Hill Library Association, said the new library will help the citizens of Harlem for many

BRAG wheels into McDuffie

BY JIM WALLACE and LINDA GREEN Correspondent lgreen@mcduffieprogress.com

Wheels were really turning in ThomsonMcDuffie Monday and Tuesday. The Bicycle Ride Across Georgia visited the community and close to 1,000 riders spent the night in and around McDuffie County as the seven-day event spent the night before continuing onto its next stop, Louisville, on Tuesday. There were many camped out next to The Brickyard on Springfield Street and many more in the gym on Main Street. Franklin Johnson, executive director of BRAG, was scurrying making sure things went smoothly Monday. He said the event took a lot of planning including suggestions for a route and establishing it as well as working with communities to get food, showers, police, EMS and other things critical. This is the ride’s 38th year, and Johnson has been director for two years. “We doubled our numbers the first year I was director, and we are about 1,000 strong this year, so we are working on growing it bigger,” said Johnson, who praised McDuffie County. “McDuffie has always been great,” said Johnson, adding that Elizabeth Vance, executive director at ThomsonMcDuffie County Convention & Visitors

Bureau, has been a big part of BRAG’s visits. “She has done it before, and I came to her and she had her BRAG book of previous visits. She knows what goes where and how to get it there.” He said the intent of BRAG is to help support a dream team of children the organization has adopted from across the state for mentoring, courses and projects. Once a child completes his or her requirements, the child receives a bicycle. BRAG also promotes health and fitmess while making an economic impact on the communities it passes through, Franklin said. Steve Dwyer, of Georgia Pacific in Thomson, has participated in BRAG since 1987. “I do the entire ride, every avail-

able mile, every year.” He said BRAG is a way to see the state and meet people from across the country. He and a group of 20 riders from Statesboro, Atlanta and Thomson have become close friends. “I love cycling. It’s my passion. It has allowed me to meet people from all over the state.” For Tim Jacobs, of McDonough, BRAG is a stepping stone for a ride across the country when he retires. He said this was his second visit to Thomson and his second ride with BRAG. “I ride for fitness. BRAG is a challenge. My goal has been to ride across the country when I retire. These rides are like training rides for when I retire to do it. “ The McDuffie Progress/Linda Green
