Open MRI !! The McDuffie Progress has always

helped us with advertising for our annual breast cancer awareness campaign in October. One year, our campaign came in third place in the nation, and the public knowledge we gained from advertising with The McDuffie Progress helped the campaign get to that place. Anytime we have new events, such as the ultrasound machine, The McDuffie Progress offers great rates to get the word out and increase business. The medical directory is great for the community because it comes in handy to have all of the medical businesses in the community in one pamphlet. April Norman

Many jailed and bailed in police event

BY LINDA GREEN lgreen@mcduffieprogress.com

McDuffie County Probate Judge Valerie Burley was the first person to be jailed and she waited a significant time to be bailed out in the Thomson Police Department’s signature fundraising event to fight cancer. On May 3, Jail and Bail was held and individuals across the city and county paid $20 to have a boss or coworker jailed on the police department’ jail and bail event. Within the span of an eight-hour workday, 22 people were jailed. Jail or Bail is the police department’s way of giving back to the community and contributing to Relay for Life through a team effort. Individuals had to have someone come to the makeshift jail outside the police department and post a $40 bond. Some people who were issued makeshift warrants paid them on the spot.

When a police officer went to pick up Quensweler Taylor at Thomson-McDuffie Middle School, students paid the officer in quarters and staff paid in dollars for her bail so she would not have to be taken to jail. Sarah Alfriend, director of First United Methodist Church’s preschool was signed up to go to jail. Once she was picked up, the classes took up money and walked it over with teacher Paige Hyman to bail her out. Jail and Bail raised $2,260 for Relay for Life. “Jail & Bail was successful this year because as always the community pulled together and proved it’s loyalty to this great cause by participating and giving both of their valuable time and donations.,” said event co-organizer Kay Chalker. “We thank each and every person who played a part…A lot of fun was had all while fighting for the cure! “

Area school to offer free lunch during the summer

BY CAITLIN BOLAND ccarpenter@mcduffieprogress.com

With the help of Warren County’s farm to table initiative, Warren County Schools will be offering free lunches to children ages four to 18 during the summer. McDuffie County will also offer free lunches to children. “The biggest goal is to have a healthy lunch for the kids to eat,” said Scott Richardson, director of school nutritional services for Warren County Schools. “Summer is a time when the kids may not get the nutrition they need because the parent are at work and the kids are at home by themselves. I want them to help get the nutrition they need and help them grow.” This year is the second year of the program, and Richardson said last year the program averaged 200 to 250 meals. “I want to double this number,” Richardson said. “I want to see it grow, and I want to double that number. I want to try to add

sites in Mitchell, Camak and Norwood to make this program as communitycentered as possible.” For this summer, there will be three sites throughout Warren County including Warren County High School, Warrenton Housing Authority Office and First Baptist Warrenton’s Family Life Center. Each site will serve lunch daily, but the high school site will also serve breakfast. Richardson said the meals are completely free, and anyone from the age of four to 18 can visit the sites for a meal. “You don’t have to be from Warren County to eat one of the meals,” Richardson said. “If a child who fits the age group is in Warren County visiting, he or she can come get a meal. This isn’t a low-income thing or a high-income thing -- everyone is welcome. I want to help students get the nutrition they need when school isn’t in session and not have to worry about how hungry they are. Plus,

it gives the parents a break.” All of the food for the program will be cooked at the high school’s cafeteria and transported to the other sites via a mobile food van with a certified school nutrtion worker serving at each site. Richardson said the menu for the summer will be lighter than normal school lunches, but they will still include the three components -- meat/grain, fruit and vegetable -- needed for a meal. “A lot of the menu will be salads,” Richardson said. “We will be able to have fresher vegetables because of the garden. The students see where the food comes from, so they are more apt to try new foods.” Richardson said the schoolwide salad consumption has gone from about 20 to almost 75 salads. “All children need to eat healthy, and we’re offering that for free,” Richardson said.
