Nita Patel, the owner, credits providing quality food with great customer service as the reason Chalker’s has been a successful breakfast spot. She works with a team to ensure the highest level of care for University Hospital McDuffie’s patients. Waller, a registered nurse, works in surgical services as a pre-op nurse. She sees patients prior to their surgery and obtains medical history, surgical history, medications, vital signs, lab work, x-rays, EKG and other information. “I love what I do and helping others is my passion,” she said. Smith, who has lived in Thomson since 1981, earned his Bachelor’s of Accounting from the College of Charleston and his Masters from the University of Georgia. In April of 2002, Smith was certified as a CPA in the state of Georgia. After college, Smith moved to Atlanta and commenced
his professional career employed by one of the Ernst & Young, one of the "big five" accounting firms. Smith was not a fan of being caught up in the corporate structure and eventually moved back to Thomson. "Part of what people are buying is the fact that they can come sit down here," Smith said.

Best Local Elected Official for 2014 was bestowed upon Mayor Kenneth L. Usry, of Thomson, by the McDuffie County community. Usry has been mayor of Thomson for seven years, but has been an elected official for 36 years total. His primary business is serving the citizens of Thomson while improving the quality of life and improving services at the lowest possible cost. His keys to success include keeping an open mind, being easily accessible, listening to citizen’s needs and concerns, being out in the community, being aware of what is going on, making progress with Downtown Thomson over the past several years, and having a spirit of cooperation with the county government. The key people that help Usry are his 104 employees who work for the citizens of Thomson every day. They provide services such as col-

Rhonda Taylor tied with another in votes, but still earns the title of Best Nurse. She began her career in 2004 and has worked in the emergency area of University Hospital McDuffie since 2005. As an emergency nurse, her job is focused on providing emergency, patient care and treatment to those who arrive in the emergency department. She works six days in a row for 12.5 hours a day, but her day is extended if emergency is very busy. Taylor credits her nursing success to effectiveness in caring for people and loving what she does. She loves going to work and loves her job so much that she also works in the emergency department at Georgia Regents University Medical Center. “I feel so honored to be chosen as best nurse. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I take care of my patients because its what I love to do.”

Jessie Morlan, the director of bands at THS, was voted Best Teacher.
In July, Jessie Morlan will reach the 20 year mark as a teacher in the McDuffie County School System. The music educator and director of bands at Thomson High School was named the Best Teacher by voters. He attributes his success to working hard to motivate stu-
