ties with its location just two miles east of the main entrance to Ft. Lee and near the citycounty line. For 362 days a year, the HPG Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. week days and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. The Center is closed only on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Hopewell and Prince George County joined the Virginia Travel Corporation’s Lovework program in July 2014. That’s when the Hopewell/Prince George Chamber unveiled its six-foot-by-24-foot LOVE sign at the Visitor Center and love started blossoming as locals and visitors took photos and shared them. In its first year of operation the HPG visitor center served nearly 6,000 visitors, including travelers from 49 states and 16 foreign countries. Included among the visitors were 1,273 local residents seeking information on area events and exhib-

its. The Visitor Center also sent out 3,422 mailings to answer requests for information and we are building a fan base for our e-tourism newsletter. Tourists coming into the HPG Visitor Center ask a lot of questions, according to Customer Service Representative Shirley Parker, who has worked at the Center since 2003. Many of the travelers come into the Center from I-295 and ask, “What’s there to do here in two hours?” Shirley’s job is to convince visitors to take more than just two hours and hopefully to stay overnight to experience what the area has to offer. “We also have many repeat snow birds who are responding well to our invitation to stay. It can be their way of thanking us for providing clean restrooms and a comfortable rest stop.” A community that is attractive and welcoming to visitors is also a place where families and business can thrive.

James Servis Custom Guitars are handmade in Stony Creek, Virginia. We specialize in one of a kind instruments designed in collaberation and tailored for the individual player. Our goal is to offer guitar enthusiasts the ability to design and oversee the creation of their dream instrument. Growing up, I lived on the West Coast and acquired a passion for guitars at a young age. Later, I worked as a luthier for a major guitar comapny where I learned valuable skills and raised the bar for myself as a craftsman. In the mid 1990’s I began to make original guitars with a strong focus on quality without compromise. After relocating to Virginia in 2008, I have continued to make guitars and dream of pursuing my business goals full-time. A Servis Guitar begins when one of my clients or myself has a vision of what we want for the aesthetics, sound, and feel of a new guitar. I procure only the best available materials, with priority given to materials of domestic origin. No instrument ever leaves my shop until I am fully satisfied with every element of its construction. It is my sincere hope that the guitars I create will be cherished and played for generations to come. 8 | Business Profile 2015

The Story of

MIGNOGNA

WA R E H O U S I N G L L P Steve Mignona was born and raised in the region of Pennsylvania north of Philadelphia. A strongly motivated young entrepreneur, Steve started his first business, The Machine Shop, in 1974 at the age of 19. Three years later, he started another business, this time in rigging, which involved machinery and moving. In time, this business also expanded into machinery sales. Eventually, Steve and his family found their way to Virginia in 2001. Although it was difficult and fraught with obstacles, Steve and his son, Jason, joined forces and began doing business as a team. Coming down to Virginia from the North was a real awakening, but they persevered through the challenges and now have a thriving business. In 2008, they purchased a warehouse at Battersea Lane in Petersburg in which to stage their machinery and equipment, where they also offer business storage options and workspace to provide others with the opportunity to get started with their own businesses.

SOUTHERN COMFORTS 11023 Boydton Plank Road, Dinwiddie, Virginia 23841 (804)469-3478 When Dale and Kirstin Andrews bought a large commercial building in 2003 they began looking for ways to lower the energy requirements of the older systems. This real estate acquisition coincided with hurricane Isabel and the subsequent increase in fuel/propane prices. It made sense to invest in an outdoor wood furnace that had the ability to heat up to ten thousand square feet, all the hot water they could ever want or need and multiple buildings. Dale researched brands and interviewed owners and the company that rose quickly to the top of the list was Central Boiler, an American-owned manufacturer based in Greenbush, Minnesota and in business since 1984. Company reliability and support was also a factor in his choice. Shortly after Dale chose Central Boiler, they in turn chose the Andrews’ to become a dealer here in Dinwiddie, Virginia serving customers across the street, across the Commonwealth and into North Carolina. They also have a growing customer base online. There have been many concerns regarding the industry changes with the new EPA regulations. Central Boiler paved the way in 2007 with EPA qualified units making their way into the marketplace.

“We cannot stop telling folks how satisfied we are with our central boiler furnace enjoying the coziest heat around and having a perpetual stream of hot water is absolutely wonderful we have four children three of whom are teenage boys and cold showers are a thing of the past our initial investment in purchasing the unit has already been recouped through the lower electric bills as great as the wood burner is the customer service we received from Dale and Kirstin Andrews is equally as warming.” Robert & Johanna Rowland Church Road, VA

Their Phase 2 qualified models available now have many 21st century features such as Wi-Fi compatibility. The E-Classic with its three-stage combustion process can burn wood so completely that combustion efficiencies approach 100%. This means the owner burns less wood, with very little residual ash and virtually no smoke. By minimizing the emissions, this cleaner generation of outdoor furnaces is the optimum choice for people concerned with the environment. Central Boiler builds and sells more units year after year than the combined efforts of competing brands and Southern Comforts will continue to sell and support their products for years to come. NATURE’S CHOICE – Good for you, good for the environment A wood heating system is the right choice for the increasing number of people who are concerned about the environment. Unlike systems that rely on fossil fuels, wood is a totally renewable resource that, when burned, results in no net carbon dioxide increase and helps reduce your carbon footprint. Carbon dioxide is part of the natural plant-growth cycle and occurs naturally when trees are allowed to rot on the forest floor.

Eliminates your heating bill... For many owners that cut their own wood, or use scrap wood, they can entirely eliminate their heating bills. Using wood as a heating fuel is endorsed by the U.S. Forestry Service. By burning wood, a renewable resource, an average home will save enough nonrenewable fossil fuel to operate an automobile for a full year. Central Boiler outdoor wood furnaces provide the warmth, comfort, and economic advantages of burning wood -- without the mess, inconvenience, and dangers posed by indoor burning. Central Boiler outdoor furnaces remove the fire hazard from the home or building being heated - all burning takes place remotely, up to 500 feet away. There’s no indoor burning, indoor smoke, and no threat of a devastating chimney fire. Also, indoor burning can affect air quality, and even create a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide. With a Central Boiler outdoor furnace, these problems are eliminated. You get clean, comfortable warmth -- and peace of mind. All Central Boiler outdoor furnace models have been tested and listed to UL and CSA standards. Energy costs: Get a handle on your heating bills Energy costs are a major household or business expenditure, especially in harsher winter climates. As a fuel source, wood -- in addition to being readily available and totally renewable -- is also very inexpensive compared to other fuel sources. In fact, the energy savings realized by heating with a Central Boiler outdoor furnace can often pay back the purchase price in the first two years. By adding a domestic water-to-water heat exchanger, a Central Boiler outdoor furnace can also provide all of your hot water. You can then turn your water heater off and realize big savings on your electric or gas bill. Over a ten-year period, a homeowner or business may save $20,000 to $100,000 or more on heating costs.

Your home is one of your biggest investments. It’s where your family spends a considerable amount of time. And you spend a considerable amount of money making it comfortable and enjoyable. Firewood can be dirty, moldy and riddled with insects which can create a mess in your home. Burning wood indoors means smoke, ashes, odors, and eventual buildup of soot on walls and ceilings. With a Central Boiler outdoor furnace, you avoid all of these problems because you don’t have to bring firewood inside, and all burning takes place remotely. Many Central Boiler outdoor furnace owners have also noticed that eliminating indoor burning has helped alleviate respiratory and allergy problems caused by exposure to moldy firewood, smoke, and ashes. Call Southern Comforts today (804)469-3478 or mysoutherncomforts.com. Like us on Facebook. We look forward to the opportunity of serving your heating needs. For more information on EPA Phase 2 qualified outdoor wood furnaces from Central Boiler visit the website at: http://www.CentralBoiler.com.

The Dress by Kirstin Andrews

“Will you marry me?” is by far the most exciting question a girl can be asked and should be the easiest to answer. From this day forward….you will ask and be asked thousands of questions and it all starts with THE DRESS! For most of us, we had the dress of our dreams in mind long before Prince Charming rode onto the scene. As your dream becomes a reality there are many details to consider. On the heels of one of the biggest wedding seasons in recent history there is no rest for the weary as we plunge head first into the cooler, crisp temperatures of Autumn. Opening the door to an even wider range of styling choices. As you embark on the big event, your chosen date and venue will, and should, dictate a few details of wardrobe for everyone except YOU. As the bride, your vision for yourself should be a dream come true. Whether you are buying ‘off the rack’, special ordering, having it custom made or wearing your mother’s, the dress should reflect your style and personality. Are you the Grace Kelly - Kate Middleton lady with long lace sleeves, fitted bodice and full flared silk taffeta skirt with traditional train and veil? Do you favor the contemporary look of a strapless bodice grounded by a frothy, swirling organza ballgown like the one Vera Wang designed for Chelsea Clinton? Maybe you are more ‘suited’ with a two piece brocade gown and Chanel style jacket. Do you appreciate the vintage styling of a bias cut sheath or the dreamy romance of layer upon layer of tulle? Can you envision yourself being swept away draped in velvet? Fur? Feathers? White leather on a Harley? SO many choices – traditional, contemporary, vintage, modern. If you’ve dreamed it. It can be created. Styles – strapless, backless, V-neck, scooped, sweetheart, square, long skirt, short, hooped, a-line, full, slim, long sleeves, short, capped, sleeveless, train or no train…….. Fabrics – lace, tulle, satin, velvet, damask, brocade, silk, taffeta, fur, feathers, leather…… Colors – white, ivory, candlelight, cream, diamond, buff, eggshell, off-white, sugar, champagne, camo… Embellishments – beading, sequins, pearls, rhinestones, flowers, embroidery, medallions, buttons……. Accessories – veil, cape, muff, gloves, bolero, hat, jacket, shoes, purse, jewelry...... Your dress is the single most important detail you do for yourself, so take the time and decide early on. Time to shop – magazines, on line, in stores. ‘Off the rack’ is not always as easy or as inexpensive as it sounds. Plan ample time, take at least one trusted companion with you. This may be your maid of honor, mistress of ceremony or a friend’s mom who has great taste and an honest heart. If practical, include your Mom (and maybe Dad) in this event. These memories can’t be replaced. Get out there and try on dresses. Wear (or take) proper foundation garments (bra and panties) as you are usually never alone. The bridal warehouses are a bit impersonal but will leave you alone to browse, shop and try on. Take lots of notes and pictures if possible. By doing this you may discover that the strapless mermaid you thought you wanted makes you look like a manatee. Identify the style details you do like, grab lunch and do it all again or move to the next level of service. It’s always best to call an upscale Bridal Salon to make an appointment to view and try on gowns as they will ask a few questions to determine desired style, size and price point you are looking for. This allows them to pull from their inventory and be ready at your appointed time. Upon arrival you are escorted to a posh dressing area and brought 2 – 4 gowns at a time where you are assisted in dressing (remember your foundation garments) using large clips, if needed, to simulate alterations. These grand rooms usually have multiple large mirrors with a platform for you to view every angle and seats for guests. Special orders need ample lead time, usually 6-9 months – and usually need alterations so don’t wait till the last minute. And yes, these dresses usually have a higher price tag. If you’re going to have your dress custom made give your seamstress plenty of time for designing, procuring, fabricating and fittings. Multiple fittings. This dress won’t need alterations because it is made for you alone. Your seamstress is going to create your vision based on style, color, fabric, embellishments and budget. This means that once this course is set in motion you should have minimal changes. You can’t go from a slender, strapless dress to a full ball gown without paying for time and materials. Plan to spend sufficient time with this person so YOUR vision is accomplished. This is also the person that can alter your ‘off the rack’ or rush because it was late dress as well as your mothers (maybe a remake) Kirstin Andrews is a professional seamstress who has more than 35 years of experience with all aspects of weddings including, but not limited to, design and construction of garments and accessories for both women and men, all alterations, Master tailor services. Kirstin and her team also do custom interior work including all types of window treatments, upholstery, slip covers, lamp shades & other accessories.

About 70-80 people claim to be a member of the 15-year-old church committed to the worship of God as a family, Renacer Hispanic Church. The congregation follows the doctrine of the Church of God and provides services mainly in Spanish, but services can also be heard in English. Members come from such far-away places as Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, and tourists come from all over the world. Iglesia Hispana Renacer is near the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers, which is an international port. “We are multi-cultural. About 80 percent of our congregation is from Puerto Rico,” said Dr. Cristina “Maria” Pinto, pastor. Pinto said she moved to America 34-35 years ago from Guatemala. While she seems to be quite humble about it, church member Ricardo Rodriguez wishes everyone to know Pinto holds a doctorate in theology. She was formerly a 25-year resident of Houston, Texas, and an 11-year member of Lakewood Church, the largest in the United States, according to Outreachmagazine.com. “She attended Lakewood Church when Joel Osteen’s dad was the pastor,” said Rodriguez, church elder and part-time translator. Since 2000, according to the website Renacerva.org Renacer Hispanic Church, the Renacer Church offers a healthy, family environment and spiritual growth, where God is worshiped with the heart and family. Such is evidenced by the ministries practiced, with meetings held Fridays at 7:30 p.m., beginning with Seeds of Gozo on the first Friday of each month, Knights on the second Friday, Youth on the third Friday and Ladies on the fourth Friday. Seeds of Gozo is a ministry “focused on blessing a group of children in Guatemala poor, providing a love offering to meet those needs. These seeds are collected and joy sent twice a year.” And from time to time, members visit.
