! s t o p S t Ho By: Aysia Hunter When it comes to going to college it’s always uneasy to adjust to the atmosphere or to simply know what fun there is to do in the area. Yet it’s vital to have a nice spot to go, especially after a week of tough exams. Without a handy mentor or upper classman guiding you to those popular spots, your only option would be campus parties and those get boring after a while. Here are some nice spots in the area you might want to try next time you want to getaway or go bar hopping.
Benny’s Tavern
American Bar/ Pub – Colonial Heights, VA Benny’s is a great spot to go hang out with friends and have fun or dance to each other’s karaoke songs. Play some pool, but most importantly have an enjoyable night with a select few.
Swaders
Sports Park– Richmond, VA This is a great spot for a date or with a group. A playful challenge between others always makes a day fun. Heading out the Swaders sports park on a nice warm day is a simple way to use some time to get your mind off studies without drinking, plus they always say -- you don’t need to drink in order to have fun.
Dave&Busters
Restaurant & Arcade – Richmond, VA “The most fun you can have under one roof” is what they say, but here you can have a entertaining night without a doubt. You can play in the arcade, have a meal, watch a NFL game all at one location. It’s like a Chuck E. Cheese for adults and who didn’t like that place as a kid? Win prizes all over again and win a great time. page
Fish Bowl
Bistro Bar – Richmond, VA Drink like a fish in the sea… just joking, but at least have a cocktail the size of a fish bowl. At Fish Bowl you can enjoy tasteful food and tunes while socializing with others, all this while being in the heart of Shock Bottom, a festive environment located in Richmond, VA.

Amusement Park – Doswell, VA Why not take a ride on a rollercoaster… the trip there may be a little far but when it comes to feeling young wild and free Kings Dominion will have you feeling like a big kid all over again. The thrill is always worth it and the joy will be a memory.
Off The Hookah

Network the Right Way
Social media has been a large factor within the younger generation. From Facebook to Instagram these social networks can help or hurt your future. Social Networks are ways for people to connect from old high school friends to new college friends. Even though social networking can keep contact with old friends, it can also impact networking with other companies. Networking involves helping someone to further their career by recommendations or close personal relationships. Here are a couple of pointers to enjoy social networks but, still keeping a positive outlook. First, try to avoid posting things dealing with drinking or drug activity. College has a lot to do with memories but, you have to remember the purpose of college is to land the job/ internship. Next, try to not use profanity in the posting.

Situations may happen but certain things should stay off your social network. Always strive to voice opinions but, respectfully! Pictures are also a big issue. When posting pictures on Instagram or a Facebook page make sure to be very cautious. Pictures are on the internet forever! The last thing someone wants is a perspective employer to see a picture that can hurt landing a good job. Try to have friend lists and “followers” that show positivity. Employers are not just looking at “you” as a person but, associates as well. Always try to remember the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.”
example, just simply introducing yourself separates someone from much competition. Along with branding, resume preparation is everything. Besides appearance, the resume is the next way to market you, so the more professional the better! Make sure to be polite, smile, and show a great personality. Always remember to ask for business cards and to follow up. Employers talk and see many resumes every day! Separate yourself from the competition and get to know the employers. In the follow up conversations, make sure to say how you received their information.
“It’s Not what you know, it’s who you know!”
Along with using the internet, face to face networking works well also. The saying “It’s not what you know, its’ who you know,” goes into perspective. Make sure to become noticeable. Along with becoming noticeable, brand yourself the correct way. In branding sell yourself between two to three minutes. Also, try to avoid bragging but, explain some of the experience that you may have. For
Finally, try using social networks as a way to get jobs. For example, look for prospective companies to apply for with Facebook and Instagram. Try using new social networks like LinkedIn. LinkedIn is used solely for networking and job placement. Lastly, post and share professional pictures as much as possible. Trying any of these can help to keep a professional outlook for any employer on any social network.

Are You Too Busy For your relationship? By: Aysia Hunter
Photo by Stanley Gaye, Jr. page
Can you possibly be too busy for your relationship? Yes, it’s very possible, whether it’s your significant other, family, or friends, life can get you tide up in situations to the point where neglecting the people that means most to us happens by accident. This usually happens especially at the point in life where many of us have never ending goals, so we do absolutely whatever it takes to reach them. Unfortunately being the lovable person you are and building relationships can be a stepping stone within itself. Not saying to choose what you desire over someone’s existence but how are you to balance the two? Well keep reading and you’ll definitely find a solution to your problem. As humans on this American society there’s a time for everything, a time to work, time for yourself, and time with others, time with the God you serve and most importantly, down time. Yet the question is how are we prioritizing the time we have to spend. With only 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week, a little over 730 hours a month and 365 days a year, we still complain about how much time we get offered in life. Then the majority of us give half of our time to career and career goals alone, with only half to juggle between ourselves, others and other values. So how do we change this? Well, that decision is completely up to you. As a person you have to know what exactly is important to you and what path to take. Never let yourself believe that it’s impossible to have a nice career along with a wonderful family and a healthy body because it is possible and the power that is in you. It takes time to accumulate that dream job or to have that life long bond with someone else, however don’t let the option of choosing between the two become a factor in your life. Instead learn to compromise and try getting your love one involve in your goals because they can possibly help and their support will go a long way. Teach them how to understand that your time is valuable to you and never take situations personal if work does happen to come between the pictures. Make sure the both of you are open-minded about this situation, and realize that arguments are unhealthy and will most likely lead to separation with the lack of determination to make the relationship work, which isn’t always in your control. At the same time don’t always put off what’s important to them, while it isn’t always easy to satisfy everyone’s feelings don’t make promises you can’t keep. Your main objective is to stay committed to your goals because you’ll regret it if you don’t. Avoid feeling guilty about the outcome; those who truly remain in your life during these types of situations are the ones who are meant to be in it. On the other hand you are the only one who knows what’s best for you even if you face several failures along the journey. So if you feel busy, that’s a good thing, it’s best to be busy rather than lazy, just prioritize your time by levels of importance and stick to your goals.

Gadget Tools
Written and Photo By: Erika Varner
Technology has come a long way with the new creations of smartphones and tablets. These gadgets offer different applications dealing with music, games, and other technology. For example, the Apps Rdio, Pandora Radio, and Sound Hound all offer help with music. Rdio plays music without commercials based on your liking. This App also allows you to save music on your tablet or phone, gives the ability to fast-forward, repeat, and go backward, and listen to new music from your favorite artists. Sound hound helps to identify music that someone may not know. In the App it gives you lyrics, the artist, and when the song was made. Then there is Pandora Radio. This App plays music based on someone’s liking. Along with many ways to use music with your gadget, there are ways dealing with Television. There are Apps like Flixter, Hulu Plus, Netflix, HBOGo, Showtime, ABC Family, Verizon Fios, ABCGo, and VH1. Flixter gives locations, new releases in movie theaters, and new releases for DVDs. Hulu Plus allows for people to watch old seasons for shows like Revenge and Scandal. Also, with movies there is Netflix. With this App a membership is needed. This allows for someone to April 2014
stream online and watch movies and previous seasons of your favorite shows. Even though Netflix costs 7.99 a month this is a great deal to stream or watch movies and old series. These series include Breaking Bad, College Hill, and Lost. Then there is ABCGo and ABC Family which allows for someone to catch up on the current seasons of your favorite shows. For example, if someone missed the current episode of Scandal ABCGo allows them to watch the episode that they missed. This is the same possibility for ABC family. Showtime and HBOGo allows for a person to watch movies, Documentaries, and series they may have on their network. While using these two Apps, a person has to give their service provider information. Finally, there is the Verizon Fios App. This allows for a person to change channels, record, and set reminders for recordings. This is perfect for making recordings while running errands or a night out with friends. Then, there are Apps for Coupons and ways to help locate their loved ones. There is Groupon which gives you discounts for things like car maintenance, watches, and electronics. This can come in handy when money gets a little tight. There are also retail coupons. This gives coupon deals for stores like Best Buy, Sears, and Kohls that can be used in store and online. Finally, there are Apps to help with location. Life360 allows for people to know where their loved ones are at all times. This gives the address of the location and refreshes by itself. It also tells if there are any sexual assault suspects and shows nearby police stations. Finally, there is the Where, which helps to find places to eat, hotels, and gas stations. Along with the many Apps there are things that come with tablets that people fail to use like calendars and text messages. On the apple devices there is the ability to send text messages. page

Kill the Freshman 15
By: Erika Varner Photo by Malik Jarrett
College brings many memories from the party nights to the random trips to “Cookout.” With memories there is the infamous “Freshman 15” which is everyone’s worst nightmare. This happens when someone gains 15 pounds their first year at a major university. From the ChickFil-A waffle fries to the large servings of mashed potatoes in the cafeteria these are all factors into the “Freshman 15.” Then there is the late snacking on things like powder donuts, Oreos, Twinkies, Peanut Butter Cookies, and the Zebra Cakes. All these tasty things are major factors with the Freshman 15 and can cause the “Sophomore 30” and the “Junior 45”. To avoid the freshman 15 try a few simple workouts. For example, all major campuses have a Gym. Fit a workout plan in your schedule. Working out between 15 to 30 minutes for three to five days out of the week can help avoid the Freshman 15. Walking around the campus, using the stairs more, or a power walk on the track can help as well. Also, simple squat and AB challenges can help. After working out make sure to do some stretch exercises. This will help with any soreness after regular exercises and any cramps. Finally, a workout partner helps! Roommates and friends are always great for workout partners and are also great motivation. Also, try different eating habits. For

example, for late night sweet cravings, try eating fruit. Fruit has natural sugars. Apples, Pears, Peaches, and fruit cups are great substitutes for the sugary sweets. If fruit is out of the question, low carb cheesecake is a great substitute too. Also, the Yoplait yogurt has great flavors like orange crème sickle, key lime pie, dessert cake, and banana cream pie. These all have 90-100 calories. Lastly, for chocolate cravings, Swiss Miss has Hot Chocolate with No Sugar Added. Even though, this does not have the added sugar like in other hot chocolate products, it is very sweet. Finally, try Fiber One products. These give you fiber and helps with any sweet cravings too. For example, Fiber one has their brownie. It cures any chocolate craving along with the no sugar added hot chocolate. Next, there is the Fiber One oats and caramel bars. These are great substitutes for a meal and are tasty. Along, with eating these Fiber One products, this helps also with cleansing your body and flushes all sugars and carbs out of your body. Using any of these tips can help with preventing the infamous “Freshman 15.” Taking these few steps can also help with living a healthier lifestyle to avoid the “Sophomore 30” and the ugly “Junior 45”.

BEFORE COLLEGE
Apply, Apply, Apply: The moment you think about going to college is the exact same moment you should pull out that laptop of yours and start applying for scholarships. In fact scholarships are available for students as early as the elementary school level. Just try not to get discourage by all the requirements, You never know what you’re capable of receiving from a scholarship award.
The perks in saving during this time is that you have your parents to support you, but cut the umbilical cord no matter how hard it will be and try saving on your own. The sooner you obtain good financial habits the better. Save Per Check: Try saving $5-$10 dollars from your part-time job, allowances or birthday cards. Using the proper math, this trick can save you about $600 to $2,000 by the time you graduate high school depending on when you start. Keep in mind those dorms come empty so this money will be useful for room decorating, toiletries or books and supplies. page
Upward Bound: Many schools have what you call an Upward Bound/TRIO program. This pre-college program provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. Although the program serves high school students from low-income families; and high school stu-

Bank It: Besides collecting coins in a large jug hidden in your closet, consider going to your local bank or credit union with a parent to discuss saving accounts that best meet your needs. Ask about CDs- Certificates of Deposit which are time deposits. A CD allows you to deposit money at a bank as you would a regular account; however you will be unable to access that money for a given amount of time, whether that is several months or several years. When that time is up, you’ll receive your money back in addition to the interest accumulated on it. Wow! Sounds nice right???
DURING COLLEGE
Tons of tips can be given to those students living the actual life as a broke college student. Here are a few important financial tips to know and/or to consider for yourself. Work Study: Lots of students aren’t aware of their beneficial resources on campus. Work study allows students to work on campus by paying towards their tuition and/or to have money for personal expenses. This works best for college freshman or students who
don’t have access to transportation for off campus jobs. Students have the opportunity to work in the department of their actual major or other available work study jobs. Locate your campus Financial Aid office for more information if this sounds perfect for you. Remember these positions get filled quickly so let this be the first errand on your to-do list at the beginning of the semester. Refund Checks: Refunds sound like music to our ears, but don’t get too carried away

dents from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree, still students are educated about life in college, classes and finances. Most importantly stipends are often offered to participating students depending on schools and locations, so it’s best to collect those checks in the end for that time when you’ll need a required novel.

with this type of check. It is not a gift from the university because you’ve made the Dean’s List last semester, this is extra money left over from federal or private loans that you did not use for the semester. It will be exceptionally smart to just return this money and start paying off your loans. The damage starts when you spend this money on clothes, shoes, social events or trips to the Bahamas. The choice is always yours but either way the money has to be returned. Pay in Private: Every student knows about the most annoying person you can meet during your college experience…Sallie Mae (not literally). If you have any Sallie Mae or other private loans which you used for college, try contacting them to set up a payment plan for current or recent loans. One: It lowers your interest rate over time and most start at only $25 per month. Two: You’ll feel much better inside knowing that you won’t have stalking bill collectors after graduating. Used It Before: “Hand-me-downs”, as gross as you might think of this word is, hand-me downs will be your best friend. Never underestimate a man’s trash because it could possibly be your treasure. Shop and sell at local consignment shops to gain money or to find that stylish business skirt for your class presentation. Trust and believe that you won’t be the only one doing it. As for your books, target used books or book rentals. You’ll save so much more money while receiving the
exact same knowledge as a student who paid $230 for their Statistics book. Pitch In: There’s a slight guarantee that you’ll come across those nights where a bowl of cereal becomes dinner. Try having pot luck dinners with your friends so that everyone eats a full plate at the cost of three cans of green beans and a box of plastic ware. You love it, and your besties will love it, so why not eat, study, socialize and save money all

AFTER COLLEGE
You’re in the real world now, college pretty much prepared you for this stage of life but there’s not doubt that it’ll be a struggle for you at first. Simply pace yourself and know your limits when it comes to spending. Budget On Time: After exiting college it’s important to keep track of your money, there’s no more financial aid emails nor mommy and daddy to remind you about your own money, at least it’s not suppose to. At this point you should map out how much money is coming into your house hold (salaries, wages, checks) as well as how much is going out (rent, utilities, bills, loans or credit card payments). Know the exact due dates of incoming and outgoing money this way you’re less likely to accumulate late fees or struggle trying to stretch your money. Avoid late fees which cause extra money to be spent where it shouldn’t be. Roommates: You may have been there and done that when it comes to roommates. You’re probably even tired of the thought of another roommate after living with one or two for the past four years. However understand the responsibly of rent, utilities and other bills can be overwhelming in the beginning, plus you have groceries, gas, cable etc. to worry about. So unless you plan on going back home with mom and dad, and they haven’t already changed your room
April 2014
into an office, then consider a roommate for two extra years. Splitting the cost of housing with someone else will help out a lot, and you’ll still be able to have your own rules. Limited: It’s exciting to know that you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want. So when it comes to eating out, going shopping or attending all of your favorite artist concerts, self-discipline will come in handy. Set aside a certain amount of money for all your expenses. This way you know what you’re able to afford. Learn how to say no to your friends when they invite you out for drinks because it will add up. It’s very easy to disregard money when you want to have fun or have the latest shoes, so know your limits at all times. Pay Your Loans: Avoid the want to go hide under some tree after receiving your Bachelor’s degree. Although deep down we all can’t believe four years of college cost us a fortune, take another deep breath, you’ll be fine. Just make your payments on time and contact loan companies the moment you start to think you’ll be late on a bill. Remember paying everything on time is your main goal and it’s important to notify them so you don’t face ugly late charges. Granted that you all have everything down pack, using a few of these tips will help out a lot. So good luck to everyone and remember you are the manager of your life so use your money wisely!

Resume Prep.
By: Aysia Hunter
As a senior in college it’s important to know exactly what you want to do after graduation. Whether you decide to go to grad school, find a job or take a semester off, have a plan A; plan B; and plan C. Most importantly for whatever decision you follow through with, make sure you have an up to date resume close by. This is because within the several plans you decided on there’s a ninety percent chance, that getting Name, Address & Contact information should be front and center, basically first.
involve in your work field was included in one of the three plans. Make sure you add any organization, and volunteer/community service activities which you were a participant. Never feel like rewards or honors you received are too childish to add, believe it or not they’re always impressive and will automatically make you stand out versus other candidates. Make sure your resume is one page only and always include a cover page on a separate document.
Summarize your qualities and skills. List experiences by relevance and most recently order, try not to use part-time gigs like working at Wendy’s as a teenager. For each job or internship describe your duties within 3 to 4 sentences.

Along with researching the company, the hiring manager should be researched as well. For example, try to find what they have accomplished or some other companies they have worked for. Along with researching the hiring manager, try to find some damage control that they have done for the company. In the mist of the interview, have an idea of a salary range. Even though this may be the first interview these things are good to know in case the question comes up. When thinking about salary, know what your worth. For example, if someone has worked in retail between five to seven years, they should negotiate for a manager’s salary in their interview. They have the experience so they deserve the opportunity to be a leader. Positivity and Confidence is a plus as a future employee and key to success. Finally, when
negotiating salary make sure to be realistic. For example, if someone is applying for an assistant job at a law firm, asking for 70,00080,000 as a salary is unrealistic. Positivity and Confidence are important but, being realistic is important also. Finally, just as the employer has questions in the interview, coming up questions for the employer is great too. Try asking about expectations and the duties that may be confusing. For example, many job postings have the duties but there may be more expectations that are not specified like certain programs used. More questions to be asked may be living arrangements and travel expenses, if this is an out of state job. Some companies may require travel and a good question would be to ask if they will pay for travel expenses. The right look, research with employers and the company, salary thoughts, and overall questions to ask during the interview are important for interviews. Following these few easy tips can help with landing the perfect job during the interview process.
