PROFILE “Repel evil with that which is better” Shareefa Panchbaya Quran: 23:96
• How often do we feel like beating the person who does wrong to us? Or at the very least take revenge so they can taste their own medicine? The answer is most likely “Often” if not “All the time”. But is this the right thing for us to do? As a Muslim how should we behave with those who are simple idiots and deserve a proper thrashing for doing evil things to us? • Allah (swt) commands us to return the evil that is done to us by others with not only good, but with that which is better! • Whether people speak evil of us, in our presence or behind our back, or they do evil to us in either of those ways, all is known to Allah Almighty. They will be responsible for their own actions and words on the Day of Judgment. Therefore, it is not for us to punish them. Our best course of action is not to do evil in return, but to do something better that will get rid of that evil. Two evils do not make a good. • We must not return good for evil, for there is no equality or comparison between the two. Muslims repel or destroy evil with something which is far better, just as a cure is better than poison. • We must eradicate hatred with love. We should repel ignorance with knowledge, foolish wickedness with the friendly message of Islam. • Also if we forgive them and return the evil with good, then Allah Almighty will love us more, forgive our sins, and give us double the reward. Shareefa Panchbaya is a student currently studying at Regent college. She is an active volunteer for both Build Community Development and Futures Unlocked How did you get involved with Build? I got involved with Build by collecting an information pack at a Build awareness stall at Kidmah Organisation and being contacted by the Youth Development Worker, Shabiha. What activities have you been involved with? One of the activities I was involved in was that we as the Build team varnished the benches at the Royal Infirmary for the cancer patients, which was a very rewarding gesture. Another event I participated in held by Build was a fun day for the benefit of the local public and play schemes in the local area to integrate young people and also to raise Build awareness. This event took place in Spinney Hill Park involving various fun activities for youth and children to participate in. I also had the opportunity to attend a summit held by St John’s Ambulance’s paramedics. This day involved learning about the service provided by the ambulance service, how to perform a treatment on a person having a cardiac arrest and the importance of the public being aware of the actions paramedics need to take to ensure that a patient survives. This event also gave me the opportunity to discuss my point of view as to whether the NHS service should have a better understanding and knowledge of people’s religious views in order to provide a better service to the public. How has Build helped you become a better person? Build has helped me to become a better person by knowing that I am given the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a young person, by being able to offer support to an individual who wants to be supported. I feel as though I am able to relate personal experiences to benefit a vulnerable young adult to help them succeed in life and to break them out of a cycle. People tend to talk about the downfall of the youth of today and to generalise and discriminate. I feel as though Build (as a team and through the support of the community) is capable of being a successful project; in the best interests of today’s youth. Habiba Pathan joined the Brighter Futures project in January 2008. Her dream was to get a job with the City Council. She has a keen interest in office work and meeting new people. Habiba has a learning disability, she is 36 years old. She lives in the St Peters area. Through mentoring and advice sessions we explored various routes and opportunities Habiba could take. There were admin volunteering opportunities at Ansaar, Habiba was offered a volunteer position. Habiba started volunteering twice a week helping with various tasks including stapling, making recruitment packs, information packs, helping with mailings to Carers, ensuring people sign in and out when leaving the building, she will also welcome visitors and fundraising activities where she will sell items and handle money. Habiba has been on various training courses while on this project including Person Centered Planning, Healthy Lifestyles, First Aid and Confidence and assertiveness building. This has built her confidence and increased her skills. The City Council’s Adult and Housing Staff Development Unit (Learning disabilities) were looking for volunteers who were interested in delivering training to Learning disability workers. Habiba was informed of these opportunities. She expressed and interest but required support. Ansaar matched another candidate who was also part of the Brighter Futures project who was looking for work in Care and would be suitable for Habiba. The volunteer supported Habiba to attend training and meetings that had been arranged for her by the council. Habiba completed a 3 day training course “Training the Trainers PCP”. This was required before she could start

volunteering with Staff Development Unit. This gave Habiba an opportunity to meet new people, increase confidence, increase communication skills, and interact with others. Habiba also has had the opportunity to use her language skills (Urdu and Gujerati). Habiba has now been offered paid work as a trainer and she will be delivering Urdu Person centered Planning awareness training from October 2008. She continues to volunteer at Ansaar and is at present being supported to volunteer for the Special Olympics as volunteer trainer. Habiba has been advised and is being supported to apply to Leicester College to enrol on “learning for work” course in Office skills. There are no places at present but the college will put her on a waiting list in case anyone drops out, they will inform us if there are any places. The Project will continue to support Habiba to find more regular paid work in her area of interest. Due to her increase in confidence Habiba has also volunteered to join the management committee and is now a trustee of Ansaar.
