strengthening our impact

The Y: Strengthening our impact Bringing Positive Change to All Ages and Backgrounds

In Lincoln, countless people know the YMCA—but there’s so much more to the Y than one might think. From exercise to education, from volleyball to volunteering, from preschool to preventative health, the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies—we strengthen community. We’re a cause dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We’ve been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities to make a difference—and what an eventful year it has been for the Y! In May, we opened our fifth membership facility, the Copple Family YMCA, named after longtime Y supporters, Ed and Mary Copple. Soon after our grand opening, we unveiled the facility’s outdoor pool—the third for our association—with a ribbon cutting in honor of Rebecca Lyn Hausmann. YMCA membership and program participation continue to be at an all-time high. In 2017, the YMCA of Lincoln served over 49,400 Y members and over 58,550 Y program participants, with 89% of these participants being youth. The Y continues to be a leader in teaching children how to be safe around water. Our new Safety Around Water program helps make sure that kids learn essential water-safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely. With a strong focus on Youth Development, the Y works directly with kids to build skills and confidence so that swimming is both fun and safe.

Additionally, the YMCA offers a lot of opportunities for children to be active and productive before and after school. Each program has something unique to offer these students as they continue to expand their interests and quest for knowledge. As our community continues to grow, we adapt to fill the growing need for our services. This year, we welcomed new partnerships with Wysong Elementary School and Moore Middle School which is adjacent to the new Copple Family YMCA. YMCA Camp Kitaki continues its streak of sold-out summer camp programs with 2018’s registrations already significantly out-pacing last year’s. And, YMCA Youth Sports has expanded to include even more healthy activities for children including the addition of a bowling clinic and league. We are thankful for the many valued partners, volunteers, donors and members whose commitment to our mission is so critical to our continuing success. All of these achievements would not be possible without you. Working together, we truly can strengthen our impact for a better us; for a better community.

social Responsibility

The Y works to improve our community’s health and well-being by providing programs and activities that promote wellness, reduce risk for disease and help others reclaim their health. These programs and everything else the Y does are in service of making our communities stronger.

“ It is one of my favorite places to be. There is always a friendly face, and I always feel encouraged and supported.” — Fallbrook Y Member

The Fallbrook YMCA has become the social connection for many of the neighborhood’s active older adults. What started out as coffee and conversation following a water fit class, soon turned into friendships and weekly camaraderie. With welcoming arms, the group has grown to over 20 and their hearts are full in helping each other and their Y branch. From sharing stories of post-surgery recovery and milestones of their grandchildren, to tackling arthritis and actively participating in chronic disease prevention and Group Exercise classes, the group is not only supportive, but a vital aspect of the Fallbrook YMCA. In the summer of 2017, one of their dear friends passed away. In her honor, together with her husband, the group raised over $1,000 to help the YMCA Annual Campaign-Strong Kids.
