Dear YMCA Friends, Within each and every one of us lies untapped potential. At the Y, our job is to help our, community reach it. To empower individuals families and children across Lincoln, Nebraska to live more, dream bigger, grow stronger, to get more from their lives...and give more to one another. This is the pursuit of a better us. And it starts with every single one of you. In 2018, we came together in so many ways to help our community thrive. Thanks to, the passion and commitment of our donors partners, volunteers and staff, we empowered people across our community to pursue what “better” means to them. Better health. Happier family. BETTER FUTURES Youth Development

Over 864 children

and families benefited from Financial Assistance at the Y.

Riley joined our Before/After School program this year when she moved to the US from another country after her mother passed away. Riley was born premature resulting in numerous special needs. She is a part of the English Language Learner program at her school and lives with a foster family. Transitioning into our program was overwhelming to say the least. Most days she could be found resting quietly on her own. Molly, another student in our program, noticed Riley and felt compelled to include her. She asked Riley what her favorite candy was and the next day showed up with exactly that, M&Ms out of her own Halloween stash. She offered Riley the bag and invited her to sit at the table with her friends. Just like that, the seeds of a new friendship were planted. This routine played out every day until Molly ran out of her M&Ms. Now, she saves any change she can and buys Riley the candy whenever she has enough money. When a child whose own family participates in the YMCA Open Doors Financial Assistance Program displays such incredible character and gives so selflessly for the good of others, it’s awe-inspiring.

At age 4, Andrew was diagnosed with pediatric brain cancer and had a malignant brain tumor removed. Since then he has suffered 3 different strokes that have affected his speech and balance. Now as an adult, Andrew and his caregiver Jenn come to the Y several times a week to work on Andrew’s goals. Members often stop to encourage Andrew, greet him with a hug or even bring him his favorite snack.

108,000 individuals

participated in the Y as members or program participants.

Jenn shared, “The Y has meant everything to us. Andrew has gained strength and balance through his workout plan, but more than anything, he’s been adopted into this community and describes his friends here as his angels. The Y is so much more than just a place to work out.” Our members and staff thought they were investing in Andrew, but in reality, Andrew is the one who gives back to them and inspires them every day.

Individuals volunteer over

83,000 hours

to help the Y serve kids and families in our community.

The Lincoln YMCA lost a dear friend, Ed Copple, on November 29, 2018. Ed was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. We also knew him as a dedicated member, generous donor, volunteer and leader. Those who knew Ed often heard him say, “The world would be a better place if we had more Ys”. He also loved to say, “The Lincoln YMCA is the best in the country!” These powerful quotes remind staff and volunteers of the great responsibility, accountability and impact bestowed upon us. Ed left a wonderful legacy during his 85 years of membership. His journey began at age 10 when he earned his first membership dues by pulling weeds! He often gave credit to the Y for leadership skills he developed as a young boy. As an adult, he rarely missed his daily workouts. Ed knew the Y well. He chaired the Board of Directors, led various fundraising campaigns and provided significant gifts for capital projects including: Spirit and Wright Park, Camp Kitaki, Cooper, Northeast, Fallbrook and the generous lead gift for the Copple Family YMCA. Most importantly, whenever asked, Ed generously shared his time and talents with us. The Lincoln YMCA is forever thankful to Ed and Mary Copple and their family for the generosity and support throughout the years. © L Magazine
