president’s message AMY MACLEOD, LOBERO BOARD PRESIDENT

Volunteers lend a hand (1924)

As I begin my third and final year as President of the Lobero Theatre Foundation Board, I am struck by the resilience and the generosity of the Santa Barbara community. As homeowners and businesses work to rebuild in the aftermath of the events of December and January, we’ve seen dozens of relief fundraisers, thousands of volunteers, and critical emergency funding made available by many local foundations.

In the face of tragedy, residents of Montecito, Santa Barbara and surrounding areas have reached out to neighbors and strangers alike to lend support and build solidarity. I feel fortunate to be affiliated with a community treasure like the Lobero, where so many individuals gather to take part in the healing process. Despite many setbacks experienced this winter, artists and arts organizations are moving forward, creating new work and offering us all the gift of music, dance, theatre and film. Audiences, too, are showing up, ready to laugh, to be moved, and to share in the collective experience of live performance. I want to thank the Lobero’s stellar Board of Directors for their leadership this past year. Through ups and downs, these dedicated stewards have maintained their focus on the theatre’s mission: to be an accessible

cultural asset to the community and a welcoming home for our local artists and audiences. With reluctant resignation, we say goodbye to two Board members this year who have been incredibly generous with their time and talent. Doug Wood has been on the Board for nine years and served as President during the Encore capital campaign that so greatly enhanced the theatre’s auditorium and esplanade. Mason Farrell served for six years and has helped to establish important corporate relationships that impact our operations to this day. Doug and Mason, thank you for all your hard work on the Lobero’s behalf. You will be greatly missed but always valued members of the Lobero Family. Finally, my thanks to the many donors and ticket buyers who sustain the Lobero throughout the year. Your unwavering support allows us to program with confidence and fulfill our commitment to be a true community theatre. I look forward to sharing a season of inspired, hilarious, dramatic and dynamic performances with you.

Santa Barbara’s Community Stage Fiscal year 2018 was a harrowing one for the entire community. The Thomas Fire surprised all of us by becoming the largest in California’s history, forcing thousands of evacuations and a number of cancelled events all over town. The debris flow that followed brought unbelievable tragedy along with extensive property damage, disruption of services and closure of the 101. Amid the chaos, we worked to fulfill our mission by keeping our doors open for as many holiday performances as we could from local organizations including the Choral Society, Gustafson Dance, and the Santa Barbara Revels. Despite cancellations and postponements, the Lobero was busy for 184 nights, a drop of about 8% from the previous year.

Lobero LIVE

Youth and Community Outreach This year we were pleased to distribute nearly 3,000 complimentary tickets to students, families and seniors through social service agencies and schools. We also partnered with local music, dance and theater education programs to provide a professional stage experience for more than 800 students. We partner with the following organizations to make their performing arts dreams a reality: AHA! Santa Barbara Boxtales Theatre Company Gustafson Dance Montecito Union & Cold Spring Schools Nebula Dance Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble Theatre Santa Barbara Youth Symphony State Street Ballet Young Dancers

The last 10% of the activity on the stage is Lobero LIVE, the Lobero Theatre Foundation’s efforts to present quality touring artists without creating undue competition for Santa Barbara’s local arts professionals. This eclectic series features jazz and other American roots music, family programming, and a collaborative dance residency. Last year brought Ozomatli, Aaron Neville, kd lang and the Capitol Steps, just to name a few.

Resources and Management Although we saw a reduction in earned income from loss of rental dates, we were able to make up those losses through fundraising and achieve a balanced budget. In addition, we more than doubled our endowment balance through the Heritage Campaign (see pages 17 and 48) and created a much-needed cash reserve to ensure a strong cash flow throughout the year. Looking ahead at the 2018-19 season, we will focus on returning theater activity to normal levels, with a goal of 200 reserved days. Our Heritage Campaign will continue and we expect to see continued growth in our endowment as a result. Finally, we will make a concerted effort to advance the success of our Presenting Partners through increased marketing, publicity and social media campaigns that better promote all activity on the Lobero stage. The community’s partnership has been crucial in reaching this level of success.

Welcome

lobero fund letters

It is my privilege to join the Lobero Theatre staff as the new Assistant Director of Development. For the past year, you may have seen me in the greenroom working part-time as hospitality coordinator, where I had the honor of welcoming and taking excellent care of our Lobero LIVE performing artists. I am overjoyed to be a full-time member of a staff that understands and embodies the uniqueness of this venue, and I believe that makes this place exceptional. As a kid, I remember regular visits to the Lobero and consider them an integral part of my arts education. I have fond memories of going to shows with my father, who was a dancer and lover of music. My first introduction to opera–one of my father’s favorite musical genres–was at the Lobero. As the oldest continuously operating performing arts venue in California, this theatre is a community cornerstone. Whatever graces this stage is bound to be of the highest quality; it’s no wonder we enjoy such strong support from our donors and patrons! Become a supporter of the Lobero by filling out the enclosed giving form and join the ranks of those who help us continue this legacy. I look forward to meeting you at a show soon and learning what brings you to the Lobero.

Community First When Camerata Pacifica’s January performance in Montecito was canceled due to the tragic flooding, we wanted to help. The Lobero Theatre Foundation rallied quickly to re-house the concert, and donate proceeds toward relief efforts. It was a gift to those who gathered in a shared appreciation of live performance during a dark time. Santa Barbara’s strength is in its strong community, and since 1873, the Lobero Theatre has been its cultural heart. That night, and every performance night, people can come to the Lobero to forget about the outside world and get lost in the magic of the arts. This year we celebrate a few special milestones with our presenting partners. CAMA, is celebrating its centennial anniversary with an exciting Masterseries at the Lobero, and DANCEworks embarks on its

landmark tenth anniversary season. The 2018 residency and performance is sure to be an unforgettable evening of dance spotlighting their numerous accomplishments. (More on pg 26) Your support allows this artistry to thrive. In good times, and in bad, we thank those who give and welcome those who may consider joining our supportive community. In thanks,

Brandon Mowery | Director of Development 805.679.6009 | bmowery@lobero.org 13

If it’s good enough for Neil… In one of the worst kept secrets in Santa Barbara concert history, Neil Young, backed by Lukas Nelson’s band, Promise of the Real, reserved two rehearsal nights at the Lobero to polish up their act before heading out on tour. No tickets were advertised, or sold on our website. No announcements were made; the only way to get tickets was through Neil Young’s fansite. But, word got out, and we found ourselves hosting the hottest show in town. Neil and the Real, playing off-the-cuff shows at the Lobero Theatre–who could have predicted it? Needless to say, we jumped at the opportunity. In less than one week, the shows were booked, tickets were sold out–a surprise third night was added–and hundreds of Neil Young fans got to experience one of the biggest names in rock n’ roll up close. The shows went off without a hitch, realizing a new option for touring arena artists who may be considering an intimate venue. My thanks to our fantastic stage crew, box office and front of house staff as well as our volunteer ushers for making sure everything ran smoothly. I hope we can continue to see such big names in this small room.

It’s a great example of the versatility of this hall; we can offer opportunities to large-scale touring operations as well as community partners.

We’re also excited to see Opera returning to the Lobero in a significant way. We welcome the UCSB Opera Theatre for the first time, and Opera Santa Barbara who will stage three events here this spring. There are also several high-profile benefit events on deck to support worthy causes including the the SBCC Music Scholarship Fund, Girls Rock Santa Barbara, The Rhythmic Arts Project, and the Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation. The Jazz at the Lobero series is back with some of our favorite artists this fall. While we did not present an official series this past spring, the support of the Brubeck Circle helped to create a new residency and concert centered around New Orleans’ jazz musician Derek Douget. Douget is a member of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the Director of the Heritage School of Music who has performed or worked with Dr. John, Terence Blanchard, Allen Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater and more excellent musicians. It was a privilege to have him representing the Lobero, and we’re looking forward to continuing the program this year. We’ll see you soon,

David Asbell | Executive Director 805.679.6001 | dasbell@lobero.org

We can say that Neil Young performed on the same stage as the State Street Ballet’s young dancers; that’s a pretty unique claim for a theater of our size. 15

Leaving a Legacy of Love Those of you who know me well know that I love the outdoors. My earliest memories are of camping and fishing with my father. It was just big Jim and little Jim enjoying Mother Nature’s bounty.

I would like to think that for many of you, the Lobero has been a place of wonderful memories, shared with family and friends.

Because of those wonderful memories and the legacy of love for the outdoors passed on to me by my father, I recently took special notice of a video message produced by a grandfather to explain the legacy he was leaving his grandson. The video documented many of the remarkable experiences they had shared together and why he was leaving the majority of his estate to maintain and protect the national parks and forests. It was the grandfather’s commitment to making sure that those places where he and his grandson had shared their most treasured time together would be protected, and continue to be places of lasting memories.

We remember Jose Lobero for more than just building a community theatre; his passion for music drove him to create a place where his love could live on. Legacies can be many things, but in the end it will be those that are conceived from our most cherished memories that will be the most rewarding.

lobero theatre associates The Lobero Theatre Associates take their latest Hats Off event back–way back–to the swingin’ doo wop days of the 60’s. On May 2, 2017 the lovely ladies of the Lobero Theatre Associates decked out the historic El Paseo restaurant with vinyl 45’s on each table and colorful daisies to set the mood to celebrate their special guest, Jeff Barry. Mr. Barry penned songs that defined the era including: “Chapel of Love,” “Be My Baby,” “Doo Wah Ditty,” “Sugar Sugar,” and “The Leader Of The Pack,” among many others. He has collected several GRAMMY® nominations and earned a spot in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. After a welcome from Associates president Annie Williams, emcee Catherine Remak introduced Mr. Barry, a close friend whom she has written about over the years. Joined onstage by a guitarist, Mr. Barry delighted

the crowd with humorous stories from the recording studios and the inspiration behind his tunes. The evening’s raffle prizes included a beautiful pair of earrings from Bryant & Sons and dinner for four at Hollywood’s Magic Castle as well as wine and spa packages, and a day at The Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. But the most memorable raffle prize of all was a chance to sing onstage with Mr. Barry. Fast forward to Anne Towbes, Amy MacLeod, Janet Garufus, and Debra Bertling on stage singing along with the man of the hour to “Going to the Chapel,” perfectly capturing the fun and festive mood of this year’s Hats Off fundraiser. Special thanks to event chair Joan Crossland, and thanks to all the Associates for lighting up the night!

The Associates’ Light up the Night event brought in $40,000 for new energyefficient lighting at the Lobero Theatre.

volunteer update

To celebrate five wonderful years as the Lobero’s House Manager, I wanted to turn the spotlight to the real stars–our family of volunteer ushers! Meet four exemplary individuals who have been recognized as Usher of the Year:

1

In Their Own Words “I have been ushering all of the wonderful music, humor, and educational and community events that this unique and wonderful theatre offers for 10 years, and it has been a life-changing experience. I am proud to be a part of the great Lobero family. Arriving early when the theatre is empty to help prepare for opening, I’m still filled with anticipation at what magic is in store.” – Phil Parson, 2014 “I find it incredibly difficult to put into words all of the gratitude that I have in my heart for being embraced and welcomed into the Lobero Theatre Family! It’s truly a very, very special venue. I still adore my favorite position of taking tickets, personally greeting and welcoming patrons with a smile to a place that feels like home, and that I have such great pride in being a part of!” – Evelyne Chezum, 2015

2

“As a retired elementary teacher, ushering at the Lobero has allowed me to give back to the community. I am able to cross paths with patrons of all ages, and work alongside people that I may not have met otherwise. The Lobero has introduced me to a wide range of talented artists–experiencing their performances is truly something I cherish!” – Sherry Shultz, 2016 “I never tire of walking into one of Santa Barbara’s great architectural treasures; the Lobero is beautiful inside and out. As an usher, I most enjoy the patrons’ surprise and excitement on their first visit. The community of hardworking staff and volunteers is impressive–bright, interesting, dedicated, and positive. I have enjoyed experiencing the operation of a first-rate theatre and am most grateful for the new friendships and the opportunity to help.” – Linda Wolcott Moore, 2017

Illuminating The Performing Arts In Our Community. On Tuesday, March 6, 2018, the Lobero Ghostlight Society hosted a special evening to celebrate Tim and Louise Casey as the newest Luminaries, pairing an evening of exquisite cuisine at the Wine Cask with a special live performance by the captivating kd lang Kicking off this spirited evening was an intimate cocktail hour and dinner for Ghostlight Members and guests hosted at the beautiful Wine Cask restaurant. Cocktails were served around the koi pond in the Wine Cask’s courtyard, and while guests chatted the Lobero’s facade was visible through the archway, just another guest at this special fete. Once seated, David Asbell welcomed everyone and quickly passed the mic to Ghostlight member Jim Morouse, who presented the Casey’s with their award, revealing the lasting impact the Casey’s have made on the Lobero Theatre. “A lot of people are honored for the three T’s; giving of time, talent or treasure. But in this case, the Caseys have added one more–trees!” Tim and Louise underwrote and hand-picked the lovely Ascolano Olive trees that stand in front of the theatre from a Visalia nursery.

22

Luminaries Tim and Louise Casey

Tim and Louise Casey then stepped up to the dais and delivered a charming and humble thank you that included acknowledging much of Lobero staff by name and laughing about their nowextensive knowledge of Olive tree varietals. The presentation was brief and thoughtful, as one of the most anticipated concerts of the season was nearly at hand.

Tim closed simply by saying, “the Lobero is such a treasure. It’s been a joy to be a member of the Ghostlight Society.” Thanks to the enduring support of the Ghostlight Society members, the Lobero is lit up almost 200 nights a year. This elite group of donors help to underwrite a variety of performances, and in a special “Ghostlight Society presents” arrangement, the Lobero Theatre Foundation was able to secure a truly big name in a small room, booking kd lang and reserving seats for these VIP’s. lang’s tour aligned with the release of a re-packaged, re-mastered 25th Anniversary edition CD of Ingénue, which guests received as a memento of the evening. The Lobero auditorium had been transformed with gorgeous retro lighting and shiny silver curtains, and kd lang launched into a performance that held the audience absolutely transfixed. lang and her band closed the evening with her ethereal

Celebrating a decade of dance innovation. DANCEworks has brought so many firsts, breakthroughs, and boundary pushing moments to life over the last nine years. Hundreds of Santa Barbarans danced, hula-hooped, hung from the rafters or pedaled a beach taxi in Larry Keigwin’s infectious and exciting Bolero Santa Barbara. Doug Elkins’ Motown flashmobs and Keigwin’s tourist dream music video, Showtime took DANCEworks out of the theatre and into the streets for several spontaneous outings. Brian Brooks’ bustling, colorful Rush Hour, showcased community performers onstage at the Lobero Theatre. Mark Dendy reminded us about the urgency of the day through his wildly theatrical production of Dystopian Distractions! Adam Barruch’s Dance Theater interpretation of Sweeney Todd was the first time DANCEworks recruited singers for their performance. In another first, Shannon Gillen filled the Lobero stage with rubber mulch in the debut of Future/Perfect. Last year, DANCEworks’ welcomed Santa Barbara’s social dance community as choreographer Kate Weare embraced the traditional aspects of Tango in Sin Salida. Nine new and important works of modern dance have been created on the boards of the Lobero stage and gone on to tour extensively, nationally and abroad. DANCEworks’ focus has always been on pushing the art form and contributing to the larger world of contemporary dance, and the critics agree that the sustained time and space awarded to these choreographers has been nothing short of life-altering.

Being able to welcome this talented cast back to the Lobero for two nights is an honor we could not have achieved without the support of our donors. Thank you for helping us to support the gutsiest choreographers to achieve their dreams, and move the needle on this art form!

Doug Elkins is known for his wit and creativity, and is adept at mixing new and traditional styles with ease. He’s highly regarded as the first choreographer to successfully blend together street dance, ballet and modern dance, and is a recipient of significant choreographic commissions and awards. During his first DANCEworks residency he masterfully combined the music of Motown with Shakespeare’s Othello in a knockout piece of dance for four. We can’t wait to see what this year has in store!

The Jazz Villians onstage with the Derek Douget Band

IRCL

One week after Mardi Gras, bandleader Derek Douget and his band of music educators from the New Orleans area headed up to Santa Barbara to visit local schools. They sat in with different jazz ensembles across Santa Barbara County, tailoring each class to best benefit the students’ skills–from Jr. High jazz class to semi-regular college-age performers. These masterclasses were fun; the guys were generous and open to sharing insights from their own career; everything from tips on chord choices to being confident in their playing, and most importantly, showed what it’s like to make a living as a jazz artist and keep performing at a high level.

In the Classroom

As with the Derek Douget Residency, all of the Lobero’s Youth and Community Outreach programs are designed to create a meaningful, memorable performing arts experience for local students, seniors and families.

Residency programs from Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz provide 6-8 weeks of in-classroom music history and performance training for local 4th, 5th and 6th graders, culminating in a heart-warming performance on the Lobero stage. In March, Derek Douget and his band will visit high school and college jazz bands to lend an expert ear and some hands-on instruction.

On the Stage In the coming year, more than 700 students will sing, dance, act or play an instrument on the Lobero stage. Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation, Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, Gustafson Dance, Girls Rock SB, Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble Theatre, Santa Barbara Revels, Santa Barbara Aerial Arts Festival, Montecito Union School District and the AHA! Sing it Out program will all bring their showcase performances to the Lobero for a professional experience.

Thanks to our sponsors SBVJF’s residencies are funded in part by the Organizational Development Program using funds provided by the City of Santa Barbara in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture, in addition to generous support by The Towbes Fund for the Performing Arts, a field of interest of the Santa Barbara Foundation.

In the Audience Throughout the year, at-risk and low-income students, seniors and families are invited to join our audience for a live arts experience – one that for many is their first. This year more than 2,000 individuals will receive complimentary tickets for Nebula Dance Lab, Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz, Santa Barbara Dance Theatre, It’s Magic! and other Lobero LIVE events.

Our Youth and Brubeck Circle sponsors and donors make these programs possible. Consider making a gift today to bring quality performing arts education to Santa Barbara’s students. Harold P. McAlister Foundation Brown Family Foundation 43

Sip + Save the Planet After 10 years with the Lobero Theatre Foundation, Jessica Baggarly has moved on to greener pastures. Jessica was a committed member of the Development team, who worked tirelessly to plan and host hundreds of special events at the theatre. It was not uncommon to see Jessica rolling up her sleeves to do the tough stuff–from moving tables to securing sponsorships, building relationships and signing contracts. Today, Jessica is the proprietor of an environmentally conscious company, Tinkle Belle Diaper Service. Her lifelong love for the environment made an impact on the Lobero as well. Throughout her tenure at the theatre, Jessica worked tirelessly to reduce waste. She was instrumental in implementing a theatrewide composting program through the City of Santa Barbara Trash & Recycling Program, and put the Lobero on course to become a Certified Green Business in 2016. Purchasing a reusable pint and using it each time you go to the Lobero–or the Santa Barbara Bowl–can help keep thousands of single-use cups out of the trash.

Let’s raise a pint to Jessica Baggarly, and a greener concert experience!

WILL POWER, OR THE POWER OF A WILL Almost everyone feels better with a plan. In a nutshell, estate planning is deciding what you want done with what you own. The good news is that you can provide for the people and causes important to you by taking simple steps now. Creating your plan for the future can be easy and even enjoyable. While an attorney should always draft your will, we can help demystify the process and prepare you for meeting your attorney with these simple steps:

1

REVIEW YOUR PLANS FOR FAMILY

4

You can give some assets to family right away and others over time. Ask us how you can provide an income stream or a lump sum to a loved one and achieve your personal and inheritance goals.

ITEMIZE YOUR ASSETS

CONSIDER CHARITY

Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write something you own. On the right side, write the name or names of the person(s) you wish to receive that item or asset.

Remember to include any charities that are important to you in your plan. If you have given during life, then consider providing for these organizations through your estate. Ask us about plans like charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities that can help your family and our mission.

5

ORGANIZE YOUR ESTATE

2 3

Make the process of organizing your estate and plans even easier by downloading our free Estate Planning Guide (LTFHeritage.org). This fill-in-the-blank guide walks you through the process of gathering information about what you own, your family, and your goals. WRITE DOWN QUESTIONS Consider practical questions, such as, “If I give my house to my adult son and my adult daughter, what will they do with it?” If you come up with a question that you can’t seem to find a solution for, make a note to ask your attorney.

6 7

VISIT YOUR ATTORNEY Bring the information and questions you have gathered to your attorney. He or she can draft a will or trust that will achieve your goals. You complete the plan through a simple signing process. UPDATE YOUR PLAN Update your estate plan as your life changes. Marriages, births, and deaths are all events that may make you want you to revise your plans.

For more questions on how the Lobero Heritage Campaign can assist you with your estate planning needs, contact Jim Dougherty at jdougherty@lobero.org / 805.679.6005 / LTFHeritage.org

He wore many hats throughout the years; a finish carpenter, contractor, ski patrolman, avocado rancher, backpacker, surfer, pilot, stained glass artist, Australian Outback clothing importer, teepee dweller, sports coach, engineering mentor, world traveler, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and restaurant owner (BeBop Burgers), to name just a few.

Born into modest circumstances in Winnipeg, Canada, Allan was close to his brother Reeven and his sister Corinne, both of whom predeceased him. All three moved to Los Angeles in the mid1940s – in Allan’s case, after completing his wartime service in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He had a highly successful career as an attorney in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. He was renowned for his integrity, his compassion for injured workers and his fierce tenacity on their behalf.

Michael was always the life of the party and a terrific host. He loved people and getting together with family and friends, never hesitating to go out of his way to make sure that everybody was happy and taken care. His “Dad jokes” and sayings were common and heard often. He was a connoisseur of wine and food, loved good music and good times. The many people he has touched throughout the years will miss him dearly. He was a man with a lot of love, energy and ambition. Michael was born on April 23, 1955 in Pasadena to Paul H. Casey and Shirley Gaffers Casey. He became a caring, loving and giving husband, father, uncle and friend to many. He is survived by his wife Nancy (married in 1990), son Taylor, daughter Analicia, father Paul, brother Tim (Louise), sister Maureen (Marlin), brother-in-law Rudy Michael (Corine) and sisters-in-law Silvia and Yolanda (Art) as well as many nephews and nieces, and a great number of friends. Michael passed away on March 16 after a two-year struggle with pancreatic cancer. He left this world with his family by his bedside in the beautiful house that he built in the Santa Barbara foothills.

Allan was a man of passionate loyalties and beliefs. He was proud of his Jewish heritage and was a staunch supporter of Jewish causes. A naturalized U.S. citizen, he loved his adopted country and was always optimistic that, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” For the past sixty years, Allan has been well known in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties as a generous supporter of charities and non-profits. He served actively on the local boards of the Legal Aid Foundation, New Beginnings Counseling Center, Foodbank, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He will be missed by his adored wife, Susan Rose, his beloved children Jody Holmes (Ken), Russell Ghitterman (Julie), Sharon Marks (David), Julie Weiner and Carrie Pillar (Russell); grandchildren Erin (A.J.), Kaylen, Jeffrey (Samantha), Shauna, Benjamin, Cole, Avi and Levi; and great-grandchildren Declan, Parker and Connelly. His loyal dog Toto was by his side until the end.
