As the new President of the Lobero Theatre Foundation Board of Directors, I am happy to welcome you to our 2019-20 Season. It is an honor to be elected to this position, and I want to begin by thanking Amy MacLeod, who has served as president for the past three years and whose leadership has moved the Lobero strategically forward.

I worked closely with Amy as Vice President during her tenure, and am grateful that her dedication and that of the entire Lobero Board has put the organization in a strong position for the future.

Several years ago, the Board made a commitment to reduce major capital campaigns by working to address capital fundraising on an annual basis. This year we are making the most of that promise. While some projects, like repairing the roof or replacing the flooring in the spaces behind our stage are less visible, others are more prominent. We hope that our new concession stands and LED lighting system will make your theater-going experience more enjoyable while fulfilling our mission to improve and maintain this venue for the community’s long-term use. For more on these critical projects, see page 49.

We are also working to ensure that the theater is accessible for our local performing arts community, and providing great programming for our audiences. We are working with promoters both local and from around the country to bring more comedy, music, film and dance to the Lobero. Our Board is deeply engaged in expanding our programmatic strategies, and eager to ensure that the best performances are happening here on this stage.

As I begin my Presidency, I am energized by the Board and Staff ’s commitment to this theater. It is a great team and I look forward to working with them as we continually strive to improve this community treasure. I hope you will join us often this season.

The Lobero continues to thrive thanks to partnerships with a diverse group of arts organizations and national event promoters who bring a wide variety of events to our stage. These organizations represent 90% of our building activity, and enrich our offerings to the community.

Rooted in History, Evolving for the Future Over the 2018 – 2019 Season we featured you, our Lobero Family, by highlighting the many volunteers, donors, patrons and arts organizations that make this venue more than just a stage. We spent a lot of time distilling the “Lobero Experience” and working to find ways to share that magic. We saw ticket sales and concessions revenue increase over the course of the year, and achieved our fundraising goals–all thanks to your support and patronage.

Our family came together in a big way on February 22nd for our third annual Lobero Give Day. Each year Lobero Give Day is driven by touching personal stories, photos and enthusiasm for this great venue. We saw many smiling faces with text donation signs that led to over $21K in gifts, making it our most successful yet.

We are deeply grateful for the ability to sustain this historic cultural treasure.

It is a testament to your loyalty and love.

Resources and Management Last season, we embarked on a three-year strategic plan aimed at (1) increasing activity in the theater, (2) growing our endowment funds for long-term fiscal health and (3) addressing physical maintenance of the building on an annual basis, instead of relying on costly capital campaigns.

We have already made great headway in achieving many of these goals: We’ve increased the number of tickets sold by 11% and have increased our total rental activity by 6%. We believe this is a direct result of a new promotions package which provides additional print and online ad support for rental clients.

The Heritage Fund has continued to gain traction with $2.8 million in our endowment and another $1 million in pledges and planned gifts.

Our primary capital funds project replaced our stage lighting system with an energy-efficient LED system, raising $129,000 to fulfill this need. The new lighting system will not only help shrink our carbon footprint, but will increase the options available to our performers. (Read more on pg 49) 8

2018-2019 saw approx. 162 live events comprised of 26 Lobero LIVE presentations and 69 rental events brought to life by 45 different presenters.

Lobero LIVE The Lobero Theatre Foundation continues to be committed to bringing the finest entertainment to our stage via our Lobero LIVE presentations. We presented a total of 26 concerts and events that best highlight the acoustics of the room and our core audience. From folk icons Arlo Guthrie, and the I’m With Her Trio of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan to jazz legends Eddie Palmieri and alternative darlings Cowboy Junkies, it was as memorable and eclectic a season as ever.

From the Esplanade to the Green Room, we’re focusing on the future.

One of the things we are most proud of is our history of service to the community. Since 1873, the Lobero has been an important presence in downtown Santa Barbara, influencing people, businesses and vendors on all sides of event production, and we take this responsibility seriously.

Our work to reduce waste reduction began back in 2011 as the Lobero became the first theater to join the City of Santa Barbara’s Recycling and composting program, bringing in compostable cups, napkins, straws, and utensils for all receptions and concessions. In 2013, Encore Lobero renovations ushered in low-flow toilets, drought tolerant landscaping and energy-efficient electrical systems, which allowed us to add Certified Green Business to our resume.

plastic water bottles. We provide artist meal service on real dishes, and offer filtered water in the greenroom area as well as the water fountains in the lobby in an effort to cut down on disposables throughout the venue.

These investments in sustainability are the right thing to do for many reasons beyond preserving the environment. Frankly, there’s lots to look forward to as benefits like savings on electrical bills, improved lighting setups, and shorter concession lines become a reality.

We collaborate with several partners in this area, including the Santa Barbara Bowl. They have led the way on producing cleaner concerts in many aspects, and have been very helpful as we introduced reusable pint cups.

Many Bowl patrons now regularly bring their own cups to the venue, and we hope to reinforce this good habit. We also see cleaner-concert trends with many artists who are conscious of their carbon-footprint. Brett Dennen is one such performer, and his May concert helped us to join the #BYOBottle program, which is focused on the elimination of single-use

With a special thanks to foundation grants and some of our Ghostlight members we have successfully raised enough funds to update the entire stage lighting system to energy-efficient LED’s, replacing hundreds of outdated stage bulbs.

New concession stands will make the switch to wine and beer kegs, eliminating thousands of empty bottles and speeding up bartending services.

It is our role as stewards of this great building that we embrace the opportunity ahead of us to do the right thing and invest in renewable energy.

The stories this stage could tell…

For as long as I’ve worked here I have enjoyed both hearing and telling stories about the remarkable HISTORY of the Lobero. They are stories of the people and the role of this old theater in helping shape the cultural landscape of Santa Barbara over the past 146 years. There is no question that it is has been the place where memories have been made and the splendor of the arts revealed and revered through the years. But that’s only the beginning of the tale.

Today, I want to challenge you to think of the FUTURE and consider becoming a benefactor of those memories yet to be made.

The Lobero has not only stood the test of time, but continues to excite and nourish Santa Barbara’s commitment to the arts. It stands on a foundation built by the community and for the community.

It is not defined by a single genre but

provides a fertile ground for the diversity of performances and the creativity of future generations.

The Lobero Theatre Foundation is committed to creating an endowment that will help strengthen and inspire future generations to embrace the arts.

The Lobero will always be a place for our community to come together, to manifest our humanity through shared experience and creative expression.

Hats Off for Hattie On a chilly April morning, the Associates met at the Four Seasons Biltmore for an engaging trip down memory lane with guest speaker Hattie Beresford.

Through her presentation, Ms. Beresford skillfully described the early days of Giuseppe “José” Lobero’s original Lobero Theatre. Mr. Lobero–a saloon owner, musician and opera singer–opened his opera house in what was then Santa Barbara’s Chinatown neighborhood. Did you know one of his early goals was to have local residents perform on its stage? That dancers taller than five feet four were quite unusual at that time? Hattie shared tidbits like these as well as other bawdy and brilliant insights from those founding years.

By 1923, it was necessary to rebuild the nearly 50-year-old adobe and timber

building. Using the architectural plans of George Washington Smith and designs by Lutah Maria Riggs, the new theater was completed thanks to the support of the community and held its first performance in August of 1924. The rest, as they say, is history.

Following the presentation, emcee Catherine Remak led a rowdy paddle raise aimed at underwriting the newest architectural project for the Lobero–the addition of a summer tent for the courtyard. Santa Barbara’s architectural wizard, Jeff Shelton, designed the Lobero’s current courtyard tent, and was generous enough to envision a whimsical new summer covering. The designs have been complete for some time, but the project has been on hold due to funding constraints.* Thanks to this luncheon, the Associates brought in $30K to bring the new artistic tent to life!

Interviewed by Brandon Mowery, Lobero Theatre Director of Development This past summer, the Lobero underwent a major upgrade in its stage equipment by installing a new, energy-efficient LED lighting package thanks to a generous donation from one of our biggest fans. I spent an afternoon with John Gerngross, who is an active member of the Lobero Theatre Board of Directors and Ghostlight Society, to discuss his enthusiasm for this project, supporting his wife Cheryl’s artwork, and enjoying live music at his favorite venue.

Thank you for your influential gift this year. What about the lighting package project appealed to you?

I am a technology guy, and the lighting package is the latest and greatest tech. It’s really a great addition that not only enhances the audience’s experience at the Lobero, it’s also an obvious win for the environment.

Why do you think it is important that we strive to improve our standing as a Green Business?

We are citizens of the planet, and we owe it to our community.

Theaters are huge consumers of energy, so if we can reduce our footprint, it’s our duty to do so. It’s important that we keep moving in that direction.

You serve as a member of the Development Committee. What makes the Lobero worthy of private support?

Good question. The Lobero is a fabulous institution. It brings so much to the community that wouldn’t be possible without additional support. To know that this season and the following will benefit from our help–providing for not only us, but the entire town–it’s immensely gratifying.

As your involvement has grown, have there been any performances that have stood out?

I really enjoyed Ahmad Jamal, and Poncho Sanchez. Jazz is something I truly love. One thing the Lobero does well is to bring new acts to town that I am not familiar with. For example, Cheryl and I saw Future Islands, whom we had never heard of before that night, and they were fabulous.

Readers may not know that your wife Cheryl is a fantastic artist who has painted two BACKSTAGE covers. What role do you play in that creative process?

I support Cheryl 100% in her art. For instance, with her most recent BACKSTAGE cover, I staged several photos of dancers as they prepared to go onstage, which she ended up taking as inspiration. That’s often how we work together.

How were you introduced to the Lobero board, and what do you gain from that experience?

I was looking to get more involved in the arts in Santa Barbara, and the Lobero had always been my favorite venue.

I love the small feeling, I love that there isn’t a bad seat, I love the acts, I love the quality. My ability to contribute to this great theater and to be part of something bigger than myself is something that I value and enjoy.

IMPROVology, the Santa Barbara Zoo’s comedy show is now at the Lobero Theatre. Since 2015, sold-out shows at the Zoo have proved audiences are “batty” about this mashup of wildlife talks and improvisational antics.

“We’ve outgrown our nest,” says Zoo CEO Rich Block, “not unlike California condor chicks who soar for the first time. But a lot funnier.”

At IMPROVology, animal experts are interviewed live on stage. Comedy skits, songs, and silliness based on the talk are created on the spot by members of L.A.’s Impro Theatre, accompanied by live music. Audience participation is encouraged.

It’s Wild Over Here

During the Lobero debut show in May, Dr. Tara Stoinski of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund revealed that gorilla poop is like gold to researchers who use it for genetic tests, and that gorillas pass gas – a lot of gas. The actors turned this into a Shakespearean tragedy starring an eloquent,

flatulent, male gorilla (with sound effects) confronting a human tracker wanting his poop.

The gorilla’s mate, worried genetic testing will reveal he’s not their child’s true father, cries “Out! Out, damn tracker!”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Joseph Brandt explained that he often rappels into remote cliffside nests of endangered California condors to check if newly laid eggs are fertile.

In the skit, actors and a large condor puppet confront and flirt with the researcher. He ends up sitting on the egg, as the condor on his shoulder cracks, “You aren’t going anywhere, buddy.”

Brett Hodges joins Board of Directors Brett Hodges is a fifth generation Californian who has lived in Santa Barbara since 1980. A graduate of Lancaster University in England, Brett also attended Brooks Institute. He has produced a documentary for PBS, and created several businesses including RightPet–a pet adoption and pet owner review website.

Brett is passionate about supporting the local educational and cultural organizations which enrich our very special community. He has served as a trustee for a number of Santa Barbara institutions, including Laguna Blanca School, Direct Relief International and the Santa Barbara Historical Museum.

He considers the Lobero one of Santa Barbara’s most treasured cultural resources and appreciates the eclectic variety of world-class talent that graces this stage. Now that he’s a Lobero Theatre Board Member, Brett is especially excited to work towards developing more programming to engage young audiences.

Welcome Ghostlight Society Luminary, Jim Dougherty The Lobero Theatre Foundation inducts one of their own On April 7, members of the Ghostlight Society Jim helped to build, along with family and friends, had the opportunity to thank him for his service and celebrate his accomplishments that continue to illuminate our stage, and beyond.

The theme of the evening was steeped in natural surroundings in an homage to Jim’s love of fishing and the great outdoors.

Guests were able to pose with a larger-than-life cutout of Jim in waders, and the stage had been transformed into a lovely dining experience mimicking a backyard evening soiree.

Lush green plants adorned the sides of the stage and the centerpieces were made from colorful succulents planted in reusable pint cups. A slideshow highlighted Jim and his family’s many adventures throughout the years.

Born in Taft California, Jim is married to Sallie McClave Dougherty, and together they have two remarkable daughters and sons-in-law and five equally remarkable grandchildren.

Jim’s varied career path includes everything from coaching to being CEO of small public company before becoming a 24

professional fundraiser. Jim has made an enduring impact on the Lobero Theatre over the course of several capital improvement campaigns. Today, Jim is focused on the Lobero’s long-term fiscal stability with the Heritage Campaign, which will build a $10 million endowment for this historic treasure. See pg 52 The selected musical performances embodied the presentations Jim was instrumental in bringing to the Lobero stage. Jackson Gillies, recently seen on American Idol, got his start with The Adderley School For The Performing Arts, whose performance of “Somewhere” from West Side Story had guests on their feet in applause. Also performing was the Santa Barbara Opera’s Chrisman Fellows, and a surprise appearance from acclaimed jazz artist and Lobero-enthusiast, Tierney Sutton and Roger Kellaway. Each performance was punctuated with touching remarks and stories about how special and crucial the Lobero Theatre has been in their lives and careers, and at the center of each story, was our own Jim Dougherty.

How do you follow an incredible tenth anniversary celebration? Take it back to the beginning.

Doug Varone was SUMMERDANCE Santa Barbara’s first invited choreographer in 1997, who has gone on to great critical acclaim since then. For DANCEworks’ eleventh residency, Executive Director Dianne Vapnek has invited Varone back to create once again. The celebrated choreographer and director works in dance, theater, opera, film, and fashion. His company, Doug Varone and Dancers, has been commissioned and presented by leading international venues for over three decades including the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Limón Company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and many more across the globe.

In this residency, Doug Varone and Dancers will create Somewhere–a love letter to West Side Story–set to the film’s iconic Bernstein orchestral score. The company will also bring the transcendent Lux back to its roots. Lux was commissioned by Dianne & Daniel Vapnek and created in SUMMERDANCE SB ’06. It has been praised by The Washington Post as, “the kind of dancing I might dream about: loose and sweeping in a spirit of exultation,” yet another testament to DANCEworks’ dynamic legacy.

This year, Revels transports audiences to Renaissance Venice, where the “Festival of Fishes” fast approaches. Performing groups vie for inclusion in the event but a traveling commedia dell’arte troupe runs afoul of the Magistrato in charge, who vows to exclude from the lineup the very lowest level of citizenry–actors. Jazz Residencies Thanks to the Brubeck Circle, we have two standout jazz residencies that impact hundreds of students throughout Santa Barbara County.

• Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation provides residencies to local fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at three schools. This fun, seven-week in-classroom experience teaches the history of this deeply American art form, and introduces concepts of harmony, melody, improvisation, a cappella and more.

• Each spring, the Derek Douget Band comes all the way from New Orleans to provide hands-on instruction to local jazz bands. Last year more than 300 students from 10 schools participated, and the band traveled as far as Lompoc and Santa Ynez to ensure that music students county-wide had the benefit of their expertise.

Creating a more sustainable and earth-friendly Lobero From reusable pint cups to a robust recycling and composting program, our staff are continually working on ways to reduce the theater’s carbon footprint and create a sustainable business model for the future.

IMPROVED CONCESSIONS We heard you! Standing in line for a glass of wine or cup of coffee can be time-consuming. With that in mind, we hope you will enjoy our new concessions service. In addition to cutting wait times, we have eliminated the need to recycle hundreds of pounds of glass by incorporating keg refrigerators for both beer and wine. Pouring beverages will be quicker, and you can feel great knowing that your cold drink was drawn from an environmentally friendly, reusable container.

Our Concessions Manager, Betsy Craig, worked to design a system that will improve service and sustainability. “In addition to helping us serve our customers faster, the keg system should bring product waste down to almost nothing. This is absolutely the next step in our goal of continually working greener and more efficiently.”

LED LIGHTING SYSTEM Keep an eye out for a more vibrant color-scape of stage lighting thanks to an all new, energy-efficient set of LED stage lights. In addition to offering seamless color changes in nearly limitless lighting combinations, these new LED bulbs will dramatically reduce the amount of electricity required to produce a show. Ready to have your mind blown? Our former incandescent light bulbs drew 1000 watts of electricity, and had a life of approximately 20 hours, so they ran hot and required frequent replacement. In comparison, the new LED bulbs use less than one watt each, and run for 20,000 hours.

(We can’t wait to see our next energy bill.)

In Memoriam Jean Schuyler (1927-2019) Jean Schuyler supported the Santa Barbara community in so many ways. From the arts to the environment, education to women’s rights, Jean was a fierce champion for the causes she believed in.

Extremely generous with her time, knowledge and resources, her life’s actions and accomplishments leave an unrivaled legacy.

An accomplished horsewoman and backpacker her entire life, Jean was equally at home in Santa Barbara’s backcountry or seeking wildflowers high in the Sierras as she was in the board room. No job was too menial for her; pulling weeds or picking up trash on Cliff Drive was just as important and meaningful as chairing the board of Planned Parenthood, the Maritime Museum or providing advice to any of the tens of organizations she supported.

Jean was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Barry in 2011. She is survived by her four children: Ann (Paul Brenner), Peter (Lisa Stratton), Kate, and John (Marianne); her seven grandchildren, Tristan (Lauren) and James Brenner, Dylan and Jaime Schuyler, Patrick Wilcox, Sophie Schuyler, and Dorrien Schuyler; and her great granddaughter, Josephine.

Despite a debilitating stroke nearly ten years ago, Jean remained active and engaged in weekly meetings and events. Less than two weeks before her passing, in fact, she was at the Lobero Theatre Associates’ Hats Off Luncheon, mingling with old friends and supporting one of her beloved institutions. She was able to live a full and active life, in no small part, due to the love and attention she received from her caregivers: Melissa, Catalina, Sandra, Martha, Armida and her nurse, Carol. Jean left her community and the world a better place, and she will be dearly missed.

Oswald da Ros (1921-2018) Oswald “Ozzie” Da Ros, was a true Santa Barbara native, and left his physical mark on the city he loved.

He graduated from Santa Barbara High School and served in the Army in Persia during World War II. He was a member of the El Pescatore Club, E Clampus Vitus and the Westerners, and served on boards of the St. Francis Foundation, Santa Barbara Historical Museum, Santa Barbara Carriage Museum, Old Spanish Days and Catholic Charities amongst others.

Ozzie was a greatly respected stone mason, and was involved in restorations of Mission Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and La Arcada as well as the Museum of Natural History. For the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, he produced adobe bricks in his own yard. He participated in the development of many of the garden areas at Lotusland working closely with Madame Ganna Walska for decades, taking over for his father who had worked under the previous owners and carrying forward into the third generation with his son, Peter Da Ros. Though he is gone, his legacy lives on in the extensive work he did to beautify Santa Barbara.

Ozzie was predeceased by his wife Kathleen Lennon Da Ros in 2004 and his sister, Mary Devine in 2012. He is survived by his children Kathleen Mackins and Peter Da Ros (Christina) of Santa Barbara and Ann Martin of Fort Worth, Texas, as well as by grandchildren Bradley Mackins (Kristen), Danielle Leholm (Ryan Bailey), Katie O’Toole, Rachel Da Ros and Marianna Da Ros, Keegan Anderson (Dustin) and James Martin; great-grandchildren Chase and Austin Mackins, Kaylie Leholm and Brixton Bailey.
