President’s Message STEVE HAYES - LOBERO BOARD PRESIDENT It is 2020 and the Lobero Theatre is as busy as any of us can remember! Nearly 150 years after Jose Lobero saw his opera house open its doors, I’m not sure he would believe his eyes if he saw how far it has come. It’s still a home for Opera as he envisioned, but with today’s incredible variety of rock ‘n’ roll, film, comedy, jazz, magic, dance, and chamber music offerings, this theater has something everyone can enjoy. The activity on the stage is an important part of our mission. It’s also the most visible aspect of what we do as a Board of Directors and staff. We love caring for this building and serving the community, but the work we do behind the scenes is just as critical to the health and vibrancy of this organization. •

Building maintenance and upgrades – The building is job #1, and that means more than changing the lightbulbs and fixing the plumbing. We have a running list of capital priorities to ensure that the theater is safe, accessible and offers a high-quality performance experience for artists and audiences alike. We are continually upgrading equipment and actively seeking ways to be more energyefficient as new technology becomes available.

Programs that welcome our underserved communities – Arts accessibility is something we champion at the theater and beyond. We bring low-income families and seniors to the Lobero to enjoy a variety of performances. We send artists into schools to share their time and talent with eager students. We also make sure that this stage is a home for Santa Barbara’s next generation of performers through youth performance subsidies. See page 25 to find out more about our Youth & Community Outreach programs.

Fiscal stability and growth – It’s not the most glamorous part of the work we do but watching the bottom line and finding sensible ways to improve our financial position is key to all other aspects of our operations. Raising a healthy endowment will ensure that long after we are gone, this theater will continue to be an asset to the community and a home for the best in performing arts. See page 52 to learn how you can get involved.

As a fan, I love coming to the Lobero to see great performances, and I feel a sense of ownership of this intimate venue. As a Board member, I’m proud to act as a steward of this historic icon, ensuring that this vibrant stage continues to run smoothly.

Sophisticated Music. Sublime Hall. Introducing the Lobero Theatre Chamber Music Project This year the Lobero Theatre Foundation officially joined forces with Music Director and Conductor Heiichiro Ohyama and renowned violinist Benjamin Beilman to launch the Lobero Theatre Chamber Music Project. This new venture is intended to present the best in chamber music and engage new audiences in this enduring art form. Ohyama introduced supporters to Beilman at a speical preview performance hosted by former Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra Board President Joe Campanelli this past October. The fresh-faced violinist has performed with many major orchestras worldwide including the London Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, and San Francisco Symphony to great critical acclaim. He performs regularly at the major halls across the world including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Louvre (Paris), and many others—all of this by age 30. He thanked the group by saying, “I am so grateful for Heiichiro’s mentorship and I'm very happy to be a part of this new endeavor.” After the performance, musicologist Derek Katz answered questions from the audience regarding the pieces performed, which led to a lively exchange reflecting the intimate nature of the gathering and easy friendship between the two artists. We’re looking forward to continuing this energy of camaraderie and excellence in the Lobero Theatre Chamber Music Project. All the musicians who will be part of this first season have a connection to each other as well as impressive solo careers, and look forward to collaborating on these demanding and beautiful works.

The Lobero Theatre is cherished for its intimacy, especially for chamber music. Maestro Ohyama has curated a program to showcase exceptional players and musical selections in this space. The word choice of “project” is no accident, as it is our first year exploring this new partnership and finding ways to successfully utilize the funds held at the closing of the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra’s 501c3. The Lobero Theatre Foundation is inspired by the possibilities in this new collaboration, and will administer the funds in the spirit of which they were given—whether it’s the Chamber Music Project in its current form, the festival format we aspire to grow into, or something brand new that will develop in the coming years. Joe Campanelli agrees, “[The Lobero Theatre Foundation] embraces our vision of applying the funds to continue providing music education offerings, and the flexibility to present any other collaborative classical music as appropriate.” We’re committed to acting in service of the gift, and we hope this new Chamber Music Project will be a complement to our classical music partners for many years to come.

With a little help from our friends (and sponsors) One of the most exciting sustainable improvements the Lobero has been working toward are new bar-style concession carts that serve beer and wine through a tap system. Keg service preserves beverages for longer periods than bottles and cans, and helps drastically cut back on waste. All this means increased efficiency and convenience, and the ability to serve more patrons quickly. Kunin Winery, our new corporate sponsor, will be one of two wineries supporting these new greener concessions efforts by supplying wine kegs. Kunin Wines, owned by Magan Kunin, distributes their wine nationally and at their popular tasting room in the Funk Zone. This local, familyowned business produces approximately 5,000 cases per year and we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait for you to enjoy them here. Third Window Brewery will be our featured beer partner. A part of the Fess Parker Family, who have been actively supporting Jazz at the Lobero for the last two seasons, Third Window will be providing a rotating selection of craft beers and rotating taps. In addition, you may have noticed that the Lobero is no longer selling disposable plastic water bottles. A Captured Dream:

Celebrating the Grand Opening of the New Lobero Theatre, August 4, 1924 In 1924, Miss Sarah Redington reviewed the opening of the New Lobero Theatre designed by George Washingon Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs and spoke for the whole town, no doubt, when she said, “The building is a captured dream.” She continued describing the opening event, an original play entitled Beggar on Horseback, “It is a delicious bit of selfexpression. It is a study in Americanism, a sermon. It is a triumphant bit of funmaking. And above all, it is a dream.” The new Lobero Theatre was the work of the Community Arts Association. When they went to the community, everyone was approached for a contribution and everyone gave what they could. Only two persons gave over $1,000 dollars. It was indeed a community effort raising $180,000 for the building of our current Lobero Theatre. As one of the committee members said, “We are proud of the new Lobero and Santa Barbara should be proud of it too. The city now has one of the finest community playhouses in the country and its completion is an achievement made possible only through the cooperation and help of all kinds. It is truly a community center and this fact must be kept uppermost if the institution’s real ideals are to be carried out.”

The Lobero continues to stand as that community center first envisioned by founder Jose Lobero, and reimagined by our community in the form of our beautiful Lobero Theatre.

The Heritage Campaign is our community’s way to ensure the dream is truly captured and will always remain for future generations to enjoy. Although the theater is a reality, the continued dream is the force that gives life to what awaits us tomorrow. Please talk to me about how you can play a role.

President Mindy Denson is bringing the Lobero Theatre Associates out of the wings, and into the spotlight. For those who have not met Mindy Denson, she is an absolute sparkplug with a big smile and a kind word for everyone. She loves to lend a hand whenever she can. Mindy joined the Associates in 2016 and quickly became the co-chair of the holiday tea, jumping in head first to her new role. She describes how longtime Associates Janet McCann, Sylvia Easton and Annie Williams approached her and told her it was her time to join. Each year, Mindy celebrates her anniversary with the Associates at the Holiday Tea, where she enjoys the friendly competition about who’s been a member the longest. In addition to her Associate duties, she’s also spending time at the Lobero volunteering as an usher. “I love being an usher; it’s an honor to see the smiling faces of people as they enter the auditorium for the first time.” She’s a huge jazz fan, naming Pat Metheny, Dave Brubeck, and Dorado Schmitt as some of her favorite artists. She feels the spirit of her father—a pianist—whenever she’s in the theater, which is one of the reasons that she’s so comfortable at the Lobero and so committed to supporting this important icon. The Associates are welcoming a record ten new members this season! Not only are they bringing in new women, but many former members are also returning to the ranks after an absence.

“Outreach is a big theme of my presidency. I just want everyone to know how much I love these women, and it’s so great to spend time together.” In addition to the Associates, Mindy also lends her considerable talents to other organizations in the area, many focused on the environment and animals. She gives her time to Bucket Brigade, Santa Barbara Firefighters Alliance (where she serves on the board), the Montecito Community Foundation, and the Santa Barbara Wildlife Network. You can also find her working at Coast to Coast in La Arcada or playing polo– especially now that her rotator cuff is mended. There are many opportunities to get involved with this dynamic group of fundraisers. This year they are enjoying many new ways to get together while supporting the theater, from a champagne toast at the Olive & Espig Gallery in the Upper Village, to Associates’ Night Out events at the Lobero, and more. Stay tuned for more information on the Associates' signature Hats Off event, which will feature a special guest and raise funds for a special “Curtain Call,” underwriting a new curtain for the Lobero Theatre.

Going Above and Beyond Every year I am honored to host Volunteer Appreciation night to thank our wonderful family of ushers for dedicating their time and making the Lobero Theatre a better place.

Next time you’re in the audience at the Lobero, look to see if your usher is wearing a pin that signifies they have earned a special honor including Usher of the Month or Usher of the Year. Be sure to say thank you if you can; they are here for you.

These individuals spend much of their time—some devoting 50-100 nights each serving right here in the Lobero. (That’s twice per week, or more in some cases!) We took an additional moment this year to recognize the ushers who have been at the Lobero for 20 years and beyond, which is an incredible commitment, and a testament that we must be doing something right. The annual celebration offers a time to kick back and be served by the Foundation staff who work as ushers for the evening. Music was provided by Key Party, a four-piece band known for their thematic sets and coordinating outfits. They played a spirited set with a Halloween Theme. State and Fig once again provided a mouth-watering pasta bar and dessert. After dinner, it was time to show off a few moves on the dance floor.

I am humbled to work with such a loyal and enthusiastic group of people.

Out and About with Ghostlight Society Members and Friends Becoming a member of the Ghostlight Society doesn’t just mean great concerts. There are a myriad of other perks, including a private winery tour with the Fess Parker Family. October is a beautiful time of year in the Santa Ynez Valley, setting the scene for a carefree day at the Fess Parker Family Winery with Ghostlight members and friends. The Sunday sojourn began late in the morning with a chartered bus ride courtesy of Coastal Concierge. Ghostlight members John Gerngross and Cheryl Doty, Katie Dewitt, Brett & Natalie Hodges, and Bailey and Sheila Caldwell all piled into the leather seats. Board members Charles d’LArbre and his wife Barbara, Amy MacLeod and her husband Don, and Lobero staffers David Asbell and his wife Denise, Jim Dougherty, and Brandon Mowery all took in the day with Frank Tabar of Farmers & Merchants Trust and his wife Mariko. Associates board president Mindy Denson also joined with her husband Chris, and their friend and new Branch Manager of Farmers & Merchants Bank, Nolan Nicholson and Hubert Guillot de Suduiraut. Upon arriving at the winery, guests were greeted with a toast of Fess Parker’s award-winning Fesstivity—a lovely sparkling white wine perfect for a warm autumn day (and a popular souvenir purchase). The tasting took place in the beautiful barrel room led by Ashley Parker and Tim Snider. Ashley and Tim regaled the group with origin stories of the vineyard and

led a tasting of everything from a crispy Viognier through a complex Pinot Noir, and a memorable Cabernet Sauvignon. The Parkers supplied a map to illustrate the growing regions of each wine and explained the different techniques used in each vintage. Afterwards, the group enjoyed a tour of the winemaking facility—a vast warehouse of equipment and forklifts where Tim proudly displayed his technical expertise. A lovely lunch supplied by Coastal Concierge was served on a private outdoor patio while the Bryan Titus Trio played their special brand of toe-tapping modern American Roots Music. The beautiful paintings featured on this and the previous BACKSTAGE were created by Laurie McKinley, who is not only a talented artist, but also a generous supporter. Laurie is from Santa Barbara and has been attending performances at the Lobero since the early ‘50’s with her grandmother, and now brings her grandchildren. She has been inspired by the magic of this hall for many years and shares that with the world through her paintings—and her gifts. I had the good fortune to sit and learn more about our talented collaborator.

BM: Tell me a little about your artistic passions. At what point in your life did you realize that painting was going to become your profession? LM: I always had the feeling that I was part of a global family. I traveled as a child, and was drawn to many different cultures. My career included social work and documentary film work with National Geographic. I wanted to capture cultural happenings that I observed through my travels. My art has given me that outlet to share that magic as well as to capture the disappearance of certain cultural acts. BM: How were you introduced to the Lobero? LM: My friends and colleagues Cheryl Doty and John Gerngross were becoming more involved with the theater, and I was intrigued with the Lobero’s commitment to magic, music and the arts. It is what brings the community together and makes Santa Barbara special. BM: What was the Lobero like when you were a child? LM: I remember a lot of ballet, dance, color … so much joy! I felt so comfortable there, like I could be myself. It fed my soul. BM: Talk to us about the inspiration behind your cover paintings; what led you to choose your subjects?

LM: I look for images that have energy and movement. I was also intrigued by the Ghostlight. Once I learned the story of why it remains on stage, I wanted it to be present in my paintings. BM: What does the Lobero mean to you and what do you see as its place in the community? LM: The Lobero represents everything that Santa Barbara has been since the beginning. It’s the archetype for our city architecturally and emotionally. It’s a reminder of how lucky we are as a community. BM: What do you look for when you support an organization, and how does the Lobero capture the spirit of that engagement? LM: I love to give back. I embrace creativity and the arts, and that the staff has passion and purpose to keep the Lobero alive. Inclusive, passion and purpose—we need all those things. BM: What are your hopes for the Lobero moving forward? LM: Keep embracing dance, music and remain a resource for fans of all ages. I want to make sure all children, grade school through college, can go and experience the magic.

We bring the arts to life for thousands of kids each year Nebula Dance Lab presents KARANA in 2020 Since 2015, the Lobero has been partnering with Nebula Dance Lab to bring high-quality dance performances to the Lobero stage for youth audiences. Each year more than 2,000 students have the opportunity to experience these intelligent programs with their classrooms. Having just celebrated their 10th Anniversary in 2019, we are excited to announce Nebulaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2020 production, KARANA. KARANA is an original work and the first dance adaptation of the book, Island of the Blue Dolphins. This book is an important part of the elementary school curriculum focused on local history. Nebula is honored to have the opportunity and responsibility of helping to illuminate the culture of local Native American tribes (specifically the natives at Ghalas-at, an island off the coast of California, also known as San Nicolas), and the rich story of a persevering young woman. A compelling historical fiction, the story explores history, Native American culture, themes of forgiveness and trust, loneliness and companionship, and moral development. Told through the eyes of a young girl, KARANA is set to be a captivating and exhilarating performance. Four performances of KARANA will be available for school field trips in November 2020, as well as one public performance to be announced.

Thanks to the Brubeck Circle, we have two jazz residencies that reach hundreds of students throughout Santa Barbara County and make a big impact.

Throughout the year, at-risk and underserved youth, seniors and families are invited to join our audience for a live arts experience–for many, their first. In 2019-20, more than 2,500 individuals will receive complimentary tickets for Nebula Dance Lab, Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz, It’s Magic!, the Derek Douget Band and other Lobero LIVE events.

Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundations provides jazz history and performance residencies to local 4th, 5th and 6th grade students at three schools.

Each spring, the Derek Douget Band comes all the way from New Orleans to provide hands-on instruction to local junior high, high school and college jazz bands.

Performance Subsidies Each year more than 800 children and teens perform on the Lobero stage. Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation, Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, Gustafson Dance, Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble Theatre, Montecito Union, Cold Spring and Crane Schools and the AHA! Sing it Out program all bring their culminating recitals home to the Lobero for a professional performance experience.

In Memoriam JIM BREEN (1948 – 2019)

JIM HASLEM (1958-2019)

James Howard Breen passed away on Friday, August 2, 2019 after dining with friends at Arnoldi’s — one of his favorite eateries. He was laughing minutes before the lights went out. He was 71.

James "Jim" R. Haslem, a lawyer, real estate consultant and resident of Santa Barbara for more than 20 years, died at his home on November 9, 2019, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was 61 and had been diagnosed with ALS in July.

Born in Los Angeles, Jim’s first aspirations were to be a professional cook. He apprenticed with a French chef who displayed an intense artistic temperament (throwing lots of pots and pans around). Jim noticed the bartender seemed to do less work, have more fun, and make the same money. So a new path to success was selected. Jim lived in Summerland in the late 1960’s with his wife, Sue, and attended SBCC. In 1970, they moved to Arcata, with Sue now pregnant with their son Darrin. There, Jim transferred to Humboldt State, where he earned his BA. Jim moved back to L.A. in the 1970’s to work in the hospitality industry. But he’d always loved Santa Barbara and made his way here shortly thereafter. Jim became renowned in S.B. as the snarky, witty bartender who ruled the roost at Harry’s and The Sportsman. He also pinch-hit at Mel’s, the Tee-Off, Jimmy’s, the Lei Lani Room, and many other watering holes. Jim’s second act, career-wise, was to first become a media salesman and later a specialist in public relations. He went back to SBCC to keep up with the onslaught of new technologies. Jim was one of the earliest enthusiasts of the World Wide Web. The man loved his Macintosh. Over the years, Jim represented (or built websites for) a myriad of clients, including The Ensemble Theatre, Three Pickles Sandwiches/Pickle Room, Old Spanish Days, Santa Barbara Symphony, Marianne Williamson, Summerdance Santa Barbara and more. He also served on the board of several arts organizations — including Center Stage Theater and Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Jim was an iconic figure: a fixture of our community — with a pronounced edge and a singular style. Jim was preceded in death by his much-loved daughter, Lauren James. Born with cystic fibrosis, Lauren succumbed to the disease in 2014. Jim is survived by his son, Darrin; daughter-in-law, Ivy; granddaughter, Sadie; sisters, Kathy and Virginia; niece, Carly; brother, Rob; and a roster of friends that reach from coast to coast.

Jim was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 26, 1958. Throughout his high school years, he showed an aptitude for journalism, and in 1976 at the Maryland Scholastic Press Association Convention, Jim was elected High School Journalist of the Year for the State of Maryland. Jim graduated cum laude in 1980 from Columbia University in New York City, and went on to earn his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1983. For the next 14 years, he worked at the Wall Street law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, at its offices in D.C., Los Angeles and New York City. In 1997, he eventually found his way to Santa Barbara, California, where he joined a former colleague of Milbank at the small law firm of Nida & Maloney. Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton acquired Nida & Maloney in 2001. In 2008, Jim was recruited to a leading real estate consulting firm. In 2016, he formed his own real estate consulting firm, CS Advisors. Jim was generous with his time and served for more than 10 years on the board of directors of the Lobero Foundation and the Westmont Foundation, as well as serving on the Rabobank Advisory Board. He was also active in the Montecito Boy Scouts Troop 33, where his son, Charles, achieved the Eagle Scout rank and Order of the Arrow. Jim is survived by his wife of 27 years, Catherine O. Haslem, and by his two sons, John R. Haslem and Charles A. Haslem. He is also survived by his mother and father in Washington, D.C., Jane N. and John A. Haslem, and his two brothers, John A. Haslem Jr. of Gaylesburg, Illinois, and Jeffrey A. Haslem of Los Altos, California. Jim was an avid cyclist, hiker, swimmer, gardener, fitness enthusiast and lover of jazz, and he loved walking on Montecito’s beautiful beaches.

Elaine Kendall, the author and playwright, passed away on August 3, 2019 after complications from a series of falls.

John McCann, loving husband, father and grandfather, peacefully passed away on Monday, September 16, 2019 from a brief respiratory illness compounded by pulmonary fibrosis.

Elaine was a book critic for The Los Angeles Times from 1980 to 1996, reviewing a variety of authors including A.M. Homes, Geoff Nicholson, Penelope Lively, Dominick Dunne, Rick Bass, Margaret Atwood and Stewart O’Nan. Elaine was born in 1928 in New York City and educated at Mount Holyoke College. She began writing in the early 1960’s, her son said, after almost drowning during a vacation in Acapulco. “As she lay exhausted on the beach after being rescued, she realized her obituary would have reported only that she was a ‘beloved mother and housewife,’” he said, “and she wanted her life’s work to include a career.” She wrote widely as a freelance journalist and was the author of four nonfiction books and four plays. In recent years, Kendall was a columnist for The Satirist, an online magazine based in Amsterdam. In a 2015 column, she reflected on “review-ese,” the language critics use to describe works of art. “Where are the witty reviewers of yore; the Alexander Woollcotts, the Dorothy Parkers, the Walter Kerrs, and the rest of an erudite and often acerbic cohort? Gone to the internet or simply gone, every one,” she wrote. Elaine is survived by her husband, Herbert J. Kendall; son Richard Kendall and daughter-in-law Lisa See; daughter Nancy McCabe and son-in-law Patrick McCabe; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John was born at Fort Meade, MD, on June 28, 1942, to Peg and Jack McCann, two of the best parents for whom a boy could ask. He was the oldest of seven siblings and a proud big brother his entire life. John grew up on the west side of Los Angeles during the post-war period. After graduating from UCLA with a BA in history, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard, then joined his brothers on Topanga Beach, enjoying the surf culture of the ‘60s. On a chance ski trip to Idaho, John dropped anchor at the Sun Valley Lodge and worked for the Janss Corporation. While at the resort, he met a co-worker Janet Nelson, who became the love of his life. John and Janet were married for 50 incredible years, moving to Santa Barbara in 1969. John had a strong work ethic his entire life. He was a leading salesman for Coca-Cola and then general manager at Schick Mayflower Moving & Storage. In 1972, he purchased Hazelwood Allied Moving & Storage and successfully ran the company until his passing. Aside from business and family, his other passion was the ocean. John “took a dip” each afternoon to clear his head, even on cold winter days. He was a member at the Miramar Beach & Tennis Club, and the Coral Casino. In addition, John was a supporter of numerous nonprofit organizations including Catholic Charities, the Lobero Theatre, St. Judes, and many more. He loved music and live concerts, especially at the Santa Barbara Bowl and the Lobero. His friends and family will miss his positive energy, his everpresent sense of humor, and his caring approach to life. John is survived by his wife Janet; son Casey; daughter-inlaw Melissa (née Wilson); grandchildren Charlie and Grace; brothers Austin (Roxanne), Michael (Anita) and Richard (Cindy); sisters Molly Outwater (Chris) and Maureen Bailey (Bob); and many wonderful in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. John was pre-deceased by his brother Brian.
