president’s message On behalf of the Lobero Theatre Foundation’s Board of Directors, I want to give condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the devastating Montecito mudslides. As I write this, authorities are still searching for missing persons, thousands of people have been dislocated from their homes, and our broader community is trying to heal. It turned out to be a harrowing holiday season for Santa Barbara. The Thomas Fire surprised all of us by becoming the largest fire in California’s history, forcing thousands of evacuations and a number of cancelled events all over town. Amid the chaos, we worked to fulfill our mission by keeping our doors open for as many holiday performances as we could from local organizations including the Choral Society, Gustafson Dance, and the Santa Barbara Revels. The Revels’ eagerly anticipated new program was set in early California, and it was perfect that Santa Barbara’s oldest theatre could play a role in bringing the show to fruition, even in a limited run. Thank you to the many friends who shared with us that you were happy to escape to the Lobero for a few hours during trying times. The Lobero Theatre has proved as resilient in this tragedy as it has for over 140 years, standing through events like the 1925 earthquake. Once again after the horrific mudslide, the box office and staff worked with clients and ticketholders to accommodate their needs and reschedule performances. The Lobero opened the stage to Camerata Pacifica, who found themselves stranded as their concert at the Music Academy of the West faced cancellation due to the storm damage. Together Camerata Pacifica and the Lobero Theatre Foundation offered this concert as a benefit with tickets for sale on a pay-as-you-wish basis with all proceeds going to relief efforts. Patrons gave generously, contributing with their ticket purchases and via the Lobero’s text giving capabilities.
“Camerata Pacifica’s role in our community is to present music,” said Camerata Pacifica Artistic Director Adrian Spence, “This music speaks to each of us individually, and from it we each draw our own comfort.” David Asbell, Lobero Theatre Executive Director, echoes these sentiments. “The Lobero Theatre has always been a home to the community in times of need, and this evening exemplifies the healing power of the arts.” Today, we mourn all that we have lost and take stock in the strength of our community. Our deepest thanks go out to the thousands of brave firefighters, first responders, volunteers and all those working to mitigate this disaster. You’re all heroes.
If you’d like to make a gift to support relief efforts, you may text THOMAS to 41444. All proceeds benefit the United Way Thomas Fire and Flood Fund to support victims in Santa Barbara County

Welcome new board member Michael Jaffe Feature Films & Local Philanthropy
One Crazy Summer, Body Snatchers, The Informant and most recently, Texas Killing Fields. Mr. Jaffe partnered with Howard Braunstein for 21 years during which time they developed, financed and executive produced about 110 television movies.
Michael Jaffe has joined the Lobero Theatre Foundation Board of Directors. Thanks to the encouragement from his friend John Gerngross, and his motivation to support a variety of causes including arts and education, Mr. Jaffe brings broad experience in the realms of banking, financing, producing and managing film productions to this dynamic board.
Now happily retired, Mr. Jaffe has served on several governing boards including the Cold Spring School Foundation for four years where he took an active role in arranging for a $2.9 million construction loan and negotiated a settlement agreement between the school and Westmont College. Jaffe has also served on the Santa Barbara Middle School Board for 13 years, heading up the development and site committees. When his kids attended the MAD Academy at the high school, he joined the newly formed Santa Barbara High School Foundation and was President for two years, running some very successful fundraising campaigns and negotiating lasting agreements with the school district.
Mr. Jaffe and his family have made Santa Barbara home since 1978, raising his two children, Jacob and Emma here. He earned a B.A. degree with majors in theatre and religion and an M.A. degree in theatre from Cornell. After college he worked with his father who founded AFTRA in 1935 and went on to produce over 600 hours of prime time television. Starting in Movies for Television in 1974, Mr. Jaffe went on to produce and/or finance several series including “Crime Story,” “Nero Wolfe,” and “100 Center Street,” as well as a number of feature films including Better Off Dead, The Disoderlies, 18 Again,

Artura Sandoval and his band
Mr. Jaffe’s goals on the Lobero board include expanding the outreach of the theatre to new audiences. He’s inspired by the beauty of the theatre and the Lobero’s diverse presentations, and we look forward to welcoming him in this season.
bon voyage Clockwise: J.O. Davis, Todd Jared, Tony Mangini, Dave Compton. Dave Compton at the sound board. Hale Milgrim and Dave Compton, “Go to Hale”
Cheers to Dave Compton February 2018 marks the end of an era at the Lobero Theatre as longtime Stagehand, Monitor Engineer, and Assistant Technical Director, Dave Compton retires after the 2018 Santa Barbara International Film Festival wraps. Dave Compton first came to the Lobero stage in 1987 and has worked here regularly ever since. His seniority in the Stagehands’ union (Local 442) made him eligible to cherry-pick his work schedule among the four locally contracted Santa Barbara venues and special events at the Bacara and Ventura County Fair, among many others. But Dave chose to spend most of his stage time at the Lobero. His impact can be seen all over the theatre–from his initials carved into wet concrete back in the 1990’s, to the virtually endless list of items he custom-built for us, including mix desk tables, dance floor racks, riser dollies, dressing room shelving, lumber racks, step units, audio systems, lighting racks, stage hoist installations and more.
Dave’s real, lasting legacy is his competence and mastery of his craft as well as his affably unflappable nature. Stage crew work can be stressful at times due to a variety of factors, from balancing performer egos to navigating contract demands and time constraints, but Dave’s leadership has brought calm confidence to the most trying of circumstances. Dave and his wife Margie will move to Waleska, Georgia to be near their children. We thank him for every early morning and late night spent at the Lobero Theatre, and wish him a restful retirement filled with afternoon ball games and time with family.
The Lobero’s reputation for high quality work and appealing cast and crew conditions is largely due to Dave Compton’s 30 years of service.
In recent years Dave has specialized in being Monitor Engineer for nearly every band that has crossed this stage. While the Front of House Engineer mixes the band for the audience, it’s the Monitor Engineer’s responsibility to mix for the band–a daunting responsibility.

Kids Say The Darndest Things What can I say; I’m a lucky guy. Santa Barbara is a pretty amazing place to raise a family, and I’m proud to say that the Lobero is one of the great reasons why. Our kids Love the Lobero! They come here to sing. They come here to dance. They come here to grow.
Take a look at some actual feedback from my son’s third grade class following their field trip to Boxtales’ performance of Stand Up Stories: Multicultural Tales to Live By:
As a parent of grade school kids, it saddens me to see that many local elementary schools can no longer provide music or art programs during the school day. Thanks to incredibly generous support from the community, the Lobero has been able to step up and play a role in supplementing Arts and Music Education for area students in many ways.
“My favorite things about the Lobero was when I got to sit with my friend”
We are thrilled to have valuable partnerships with youth-oriented non-profit groups like Boxtales Theatre Company and Nebula Dance Lab, who offer free performances to hundreds of excited students. We also work with dynamic programs like Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz’s “Journey Through Jazz” and AHA’s “Sing It Out!,” which offer kids a chance to sing for their peers and parents on a professional stage.
“I liked how it was cool and amazing; the lights were beautiful”
“It was red, gold and fluffy seats.” “Amasing” “Ramarkable” Spelling aside, they nailed it. Just like our theatre, Lobero Fund supporters are amazing and remarkable–your generosity allows kids to experience the magic of the theatre that will stay with them for a lifetime. Thank you for your continued impact. For all wonderful theatre patrons reading this who are not yet giving, please consider supporting the Lobero Fund today.

jim’s corner As parents and grandparents, we seek to share and support those values we hold dear. We owe it to those we love to make a statement and take ownership for what we value and wish to pass on to future generations. You may not think your estate amounts to much, but perhaps it is time to think again–this time, in terms of legacy.
Where There’s a Will … We are never too old to learn, and my current efforts to help endow the future of the Lobero Theatre have made me aware of the need to leave a legacy that does more than leave wealth.
Without the existence of a will or estate plan, too often families face difficult decisions, wondering what their loved ones would have wanted. These decisions could cause strife between siblings and family members who find themselves feuding over the value of things, which does not honor the wishes of the loved one nor the family members. Leaving a legacy takes willpower, and the first step is considering the power of your Will. It is a step I have committed to take and I hope you will join me.
I have read that less than 20% of us have completed a basic will. Even now, as I’m trying to convince my Lobero family to turn their love for the Lobero into a legacy–I realized that I am one of those without a will or estate plan!
In 1922, the community rallied to re-build this historic theatre as a gift to Santa Barbara and their children and grandchildren to come. It is a gift that has continued to give, and one that has finally got me thinking about how my heirs will remember my values after I am gone.

For 145 years, through the leanest times and grandest evenings, the Ghostlight has cast a warm glow over our intimate stage. It’s a beacon for the muses of drama, dance and music – a spark of brilliance to keep creative spirits company from curtain-down to curtain-up. The strong and steady support of the Lobero Ghostlight Society illuminates our behindthe-scenes efforts and – like the steadfast bulb at center stage – keeps our vibrant theatre from ever going dark.

“The Lobero has become an old friend.” – Charles Lloyd
highbrow lowdown
Charles Lloyd
Jazz for all generations It can be easy to overlook how important Charles Lloyd is to the world of jazz since we are lucky enough to enjoy an easy friendship with him. He’s an NEA Jazzmaster who has played with Cannonball Adderley, Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette, to name a few. Today he continues to tour the globe and churn out quality music; the man is unstoppable. We have great admiration and appreciation for Charles, honoring him as our first Ghostlight Artistic Luminary in 2016, and we know that each time he returns to our stage, we are guaranteed a new and innovative evening. In celebration of his 80th Birthday, the program he will be presenting has a spirit of homecoming; both to the Lobero and to the music of his youth on the Mississippi Delta. Guest performers including Booker T. Jones (of Booker T and the MG’s, and master of the Hammond B3 organ) as well as Julian Lage (guitar prodigy currently making a name for himself) have signed on to be part of the jam, and I have no doubt it’s going to be another can’t-miss evening in the continuing legend of Charles Lloyd. Thanks to the Brubeck Circle and generous support from the Bentson Kauth Family, we have a new jazz residency program lined up for late February. New Orleans’ own Derek Douget, a member of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the Director of the Heritage School of Music, will be in Santa Barbara to work with high school and college jazz students and worthy non-profit organizations including Notes for Notes, the Endowment for Youth
Committee, and the local Boys & Girls Clubs. This collaboration is designed to inspire young jazz players, to celebrate Black History Month, and to help create the jazz audiences of the future. Douget may even be sitting in on some local pub gigs. Keep an eye out, and learn more on pg 21. The Lobero Theatre is once again be recognized as one of DownBeat Magazine’s Great Jazz Venues for 2018, honoring the warmth and intimacy of the hall and the rich legacy of jazz, roots and blues musicians that we present here. I’m glad the word is getting out on our efforts, and as always, I look forward to seeing them in action. Here’s to a new generation of jazz lovers.

Ushers of the Month
Front of House Dispatch At the fourth annual Lobero Volunteer Appreciation Evening held in October, we celebrated the accomplishments of our family of ushers once again. It was a beautiful fall day, and the Lobero Theatre Foundation staff took on the role of ushers for the evening by leading the volunteers to their seats for a brief awards ceremony. We honored those who have earned Usher of the Month and those who ushered 50 & 100 events–just think, in order to rack up those numbers, these exemplary volunteers were at the Lobero at least twice per week! The gift of their time is truly priceless, and we could not accomplish our goals without them. After the awards were handed out, everyone enjoyed music by Al Vafa and a delicious dinner on stage provided by El Zarape. Year after year, I admire the level of support and commitment to the arts that this group gives to the Lobero, and at many other local venues as well. It’s a tight-knit community of dedicated individuals, and I’m grateful they consider the Lobero home. If you are interested in joining the ranks of this passionate and impressive group, please reach out! We’d love to see our family grow. We hope to see you soon at the Lobero Theatre for another unforgettable evening.

How the Associates Make an Impact In 1938 the Lobero Theatre Foundation was incorporated as a 501c3 organization that manages, maintains, preserves and programs the Lobero Theatre. In 1972, the Associates were founded as a women’s auxiliary to support the theatre’s mission. The Associates hold a seat on the Lobero Theatre Foundation Board and the Associates President attends meetings. The Lobero Theatre Associates have been committed advocates of the Lobero Theatre for over 40 years, contributing more than $1 million to ensure the Lobero Theatre remains a vital and enduring home for the arts in Santa Barbara. Improvements such as the patio renovation, tent and furniture purchase, a new ticketing system, Steinway piano, and contributions to the renovation of the women’s restroom and youth outreach programs are all thanks to the Associates.

Coming Soon: Jazz Residency with Derek Douget Derek Douget may not be a household name in these parts, but around New Orleans, he’s a good person to know. In addition to playing with the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Derek leads his own ensembles with a variety of illustrious players. Most importantly, he is the Director of the Heritage School of Music, which is the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s free education program. That makes him the perfect partner for the Lobero Theatre Foundation’s Youth & Community Outreach Program. On February 20-23, 2018 Derek will be in Santa Barbara to work with a diverse group of students from local high schools, colleges and non-profit organizations. He and his band
will spend quality time providing in-classroom instruction, working on charts with kids at Notes for Notes at the local Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Endowment for Youth Committee. Santa Barbarans to may also see him sitting in on sets at Seven Bar & Kitchen in the funk zone. Special thanks go out to the Bentson Kauth Family for supporting this unique residency. We also appreciate the support of the Santa Barbara Bowl and the many members of our Brubeck Society. Supporting music and other arts education is an important part of the Lobero’s mission, but we could not do it without the partnership of friends and funders who share our vision. 21

“This was as thrilling as performance gets–the great elegance of the tango master meeting the headlong exuberance and risk-taking of youth.” – The Santa Barbara Independent
In Love They Broke Beyond By Ninette Paloma If the 2017 DANCEworks residency could be summed up over a singular characteristic, the word “familial” easily comes to mind. With genuine conviction, these seven artists believed themselves capable of breaking open without falling apart, and with each passing week, the marks of transformation grew strikingly deeper; an electric co-mingling of ages and experiences all under the unifying auspices of dance. Kate Weare once noted that her absolute confidence over deconstructing the language of tango stemmed from Moreno’s presence as a grounding force, a metaphorical spirit animal guiding her through unfamiliar territory. On that final evening, two dance companies with seemingly disparate qualities took to the stage to teach us a lesson or two about altruistic collaboration. If the audience’s standing ovations were any indication, Weare’s desire to explore gender fluidity and the occasional ambiguity of relationships, played out to marvelous effect. Over drinks and empanadas later that evening, Weare and Moreno shared their mounting plan to take Sin Salida/In Love I Broke Beyond across the pond, citing a second residency and tentative debut in France in early 2018. 26

Chris Hillman, a founding member of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, and the Desert Rose Band has released Bidin’ My Time, his first studio album in more than a decade. The Tom Petty-produced album has been warmly received by critics who praise the “sharp and ruminative collection of new and old tunes by a musician whose influence far outstrips his fame.” (Stereogum) In light of the devastation of the Thomas Fire and flooding, proceeds from this concert will benefit those affected by these disasters. Presented by the Santa Barbara Music Foundation. Music: Americana, Fundraiser. Friday, February 16, 8 PM

Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra
A Grand Finale
“The SBCO gave lyricism and life to both the works by Mozart. Like finely crafted crystal, these pieces were specimens of proportion and light.” – The Santa Barbara Independent The Lobero Theatre was proud to be the home stage of the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra for more than 30 years of delightful Tuesday night concerts. This past August the Chamber Orchestra Board of Directors came to the difficult decision to suspend operations, but not without one final concert. On October 8, the community came together for the grand finale of this venerable group. Founded by UCSB Conducting student Jeffrey Evans in the late 70’s, the Chamber Orchestra grew from a humble community orchestra performing in coffee houses and libraries to a fullyoperational company of professional musicians. Music Director Heiichiro Ohyama took over the baton in 1983, leading the Chamber Orchestra toward its well-respected status, and welcoming many critically-acclaimed guest soloists including Alessio Bax, Jerome Lowenthal, Yefim Bronfman and Carter Brey among many others. Several of the Chamber Orchestra’s members have gone on to very successful musical careers. Many current and past SBCO musicians also perform with the LA Philharmonic, Los
Angeles Opera and Pacific Symphony, and two former SBCO concertmasters, Sheryl Staples and Michelle Kim, now serve as the principal associate concertmaster and assistant concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. Photos: L-R, Ann Towbes, Lyn and David Anderson, Joe Campanelli. Heiichiro Ohyama, Bob & Christine Emmons
Stay Tuned ... The Board of Directors of
the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra have generously decided to gift the funds held at closing to the Lobero Theatre Foundation to subsidize performances of chamber music and educational programs. We are proud of all the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra has accomplished, and look forward to future collaborations between the Lobero, Maestro Ohyama and members of the ensemble. 39

WILL POWER, OR THE POWER OF A WILL Almost everyone feels better with a plan. In a nutshell, estate planning is deciding what you want done with what you own. The good news is that you can provide for the people and causes important to you by taking simple steps now. Creating your plan for the future can be easy and even enjoyable. While an attorney should always draft your will, we can help demystify the process and prepare you for meeting your attorney with these simple steps:
REVIEW YOUR PLANS FOR FAMILY
4
ITEMIZE YOUR ASSETS
1
Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write something you own. On the right side, write the name or names of the person(s) you wish to receive that item or asset.
You can give some assets to family right away and others over time. Ask us how you can provide an income stream or a lump sum to a loved one and achieve your personal and inheritance goals. CONSIDER CHARITY
5
Remember to include any charities that are important to you in your plan. If you have given during life, then consider providing for these organizations through your estate. Ask us about plans like charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities that can help your family and our mission.
6
VISIT YOUR ATTORNEY
ORGANIZE YOUR ESTATE
2
Make the process of organizing your estate and plans even easier by downloading our free Estate Planning Guide (LTFHeritage.org). This fill-in-the-blank guide walks you through the process of gathering information about what you own, your family, and your goals. WRITE DOWN QUESTIONS
3
Consider practical questions, such as, “If I give my house to my adult son and my adult daughter, what will they do with it?” If you come up with a question that you can’t seem to find a solution for, make a note to ask your attorney.
7
Bring the information and questions you have gathered to your attorney. He or she can draft a will or trust that will achieve your goals. You complete the plan through a simple signing process. UPDATE YOUR PLAN Update your estate plan as your life changes. Marriages, births, and deaths are all events that may make you want you to revise your plans.
For more questions on how the Lobero Heritage Campaign can assist you with your estate planning needs, contact Jim Dougherty at jdougherty@lobero.org / 805.679.6005

Phyllis and Angelo Mozilo
Cheryl Doty
in memoriam PHYLLIS MOZILO (1940-2017) Phyllis Grace Ardese Mozilo was born February 7, 1940, in the Bronx, New York. She met her husband, Angelo, when they were teenagers. The two married in 1961. Shortly after, the young couple began a journey that brought them from the Northeast to the South and finally out West to California. They settled in Glendale, California in 1969 where she and Angelo raised five children. Phyllis was a supportive wife, a devoted mother, and a loving friend. She was and remains beloved by all who had the good fortune to meet her. She passed her love of travel, food, curiosities, and the small treasures in life to her children and eleven grandchildren. Phyllis had a talent for cooking, baking, and painting and she shared her gifts with friends and strangers alike. She was a voracious reader. Her most astounding attributes were her humor, empathy, and can-do attitude that she shared liberally with those in need of guidance and wisdom.
About the Artist:
Cheryl Doty Cheryl Doty’s lifetime passion for art and design has led her from her small, midwestern hometown to her current state of mind based out of an historic property in Montecito. This move has allowed her to focus her creativity and business skills toward flipping houses from LA to Santa Barbara, and a renewed focus on creating new works of fine art. Cheryl has graciously offered both of this season’s BACKSTAGE cover paintings for sale with proceeds to benefit the Lobero Theatre Foundation. If you are interested in hanging a piece of the Lobero on your walls, please reach out to Jim Dougherty at 679.6005 / jdougherty@lobero.org
Phyllis loved her time tutoring children in the Santa Barbara area. She was famous among her students for her sparkly stickers, which she presented for a job well done. She cared deeply for many causes, including medical care for children and access to education for the underserved. The Lobero was honored to have her support. She donated both time and treasure to her favorite causes through her family foundation. She is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband, Angelo Mozilo, her five children, Elizabeth Mozilo, Mark Mozilo, Christy Mozilo Larsen, David Mozilo, and Eric Mozilo, and her eleven grandchildren. WHY BECOME A MEMBER OF THE LOBERO HERITAGE SOCIETY? The Lobero Theatre Foundation is here to guarantee that the Lobero Theatre remains a vibrant home for Santa Barbara’s performing arts. The purpose of our endowment is to ensure and advance our mission to maintain and operate this treasured venue as a community asset in perpetuity. We have been stewards of this historic landmark since 1938, and are committed to providing a home for local music, dance, theatre and film today and for future generations.
Here are a number of charitable gift and estate planning options the will allow you to partner with us in supporting our local arts for generations to come. CHARITABLE BEQUEST – Make a future gift to our
endowment in your will or trust. BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS – Make a future gift to
the endowment from your financial accounts, retirement accounts or life insurance. CHARITABLE LIFE ESTATE – Deed your property to us
for the endowment and reserve lifetime use. To learn more about how you can make a significant gift to endow our future, please contact Jim Dougherty at 805.679.6005, or jdougherty@lobero.org.
Consider a gift to our Endowment to help help ensure that history continues to be made at the Lobero Theatre.
