Foundation for the Future

to offer learning and performance opportunities on the Lobero stage for Santa Barbara’s young artists. Students learn music skills and appreciation for the arts, but they also learn creativity and problem solving, confidence, greater focus, and the ability to collaborate with and learn from their peers. We are helping to raise a well-rounded generation that will become our future artists, and our future audiences.

We’ve spent a lot of time at the Lobero thinking about the future. Future audiences, future performers, and the future of our organization on so many levels. Those of us who are Second, we must create a strong financial foundation for here today, Board and staff members alike, know we won’t this theatre, one that cannot be shaken by the sometimesbe here for nearly as long as the theatre. LOBERO FUND

Gary Lam a bert ert Pho ert PPhotogr t ap togr ap y aphy

The mission of the Lobero Theatre Foundation is to operate and maintain the historic Lobero Theatre as a performing arts center and cultural asset to the community, and to present the highest quality productions in music, dance and theatre. We fulfill that mission by raising annual operational support through the Lobero Fund. What is the Lobero Fund? This Fund ensures that the Lobero continues to serve the community with outstanding programs, including: s Youth & Community Outreach, providing opportunities for children and families to engage in live performance s Music Education through residencies and master classes featuring Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation, Jensen’s Rock Camp, and New Noise Music Festival s Lobero LIVE presentations, bringing outstanding artists in American Roots music, theatre and dance s Community partnerships with organizations like SUMMERDANCE Santa Barbara, the Granada Theatre and BOXTALES Theatre Company And the Lobero Fund helps the theatre to remain an accessible venue for great local organizations like CAMA, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, Sings Like Hell, Music Academy of the West, Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble Theatre, Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, Santa Barbara Revels, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Gustafson Dance, and so many more.

The Habit of Giving There is a great deal of research that confirms that, “giving is receiving.” In one such study, those suffering from chronic pain that provided support to their peers showed significant improvement in quality of life and a reduction in their own pain. In addition, it has been suggested that giving and committed volunteerism can add five to ten years to your life expectancy. It has been my observation that once a person experiences the sensation of giving, the desire and act of giving is forever woven into the fabric of their life.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” - Winston Churchill Often friends will share their concern that they have not done enough to expose and engage their children to giving. They fear that wealth is seen as simply a way to get more toys. Exposing children early on to giving, whether through volunteering or raising money for a good cause, is an excellent way to develop empathetic thinking.

In short, the Lobero Fund allows us to do all the things that make the Lobero your community theatre, and the cornerstone for Santa Barbara’s performing arts. Please consider joining me in making a gift to the Lobero Fund before May 31.

There are again a multitude of studies that conclude that altruism in teens helps inoculate them against many hazards of their age group. They are less likely to become pregnant or to abuse drugs or alcohol. They also perform better in school and have higher self-esteem. Finally, altruistic teens tend to grow up to be happier and healthier—physically and emotionally—than their non-altruistic counterparts.

Your support makes a big impact on this little theatre.

I hope you will always make a point of sharing your giving with your children and your grandchildren. Let them know it is an important part of the life you have made.

Thank you for your consideration,

Jim Dougherty, Director of Development Steve Hayes, Lobero Fund Chair

Dave Asbell with Rickie Monie, pianist for Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

All That Jazz I’d like to introduce a terrific group of people who have made possible several of the most memorable evenings at the Lobero. Without their support, we may not have been able to boast an evening with John Scofield and Bill Frisell as they presented the, “jazz guitar summit of the ages” (Santa Barbara News-Press) or the jump-up-and-dance joy of the Blind Boys of Alabama.

The dedicated donors of the Brubeck Circle, along with Jazz at the Lobero series subscribers, are the glue that holds the Lobero’s various American Roots series together. I remember many of those performances vividly, and have great memories backstage with members of The Bad Plus, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and many of the other gracious and talented members of the touring jazz community. We’re now in our 15th season of Jazz at the Lobero, and wow, have we had an impressive run so far. Please peruse the variety of jazz artists that have played the Lobero since 2000 starting over on page 27, and know that your gifts have made it possible. The Brubeck Circle is also responsible for some significant outreach efforts in youth music education with the Santa

Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation (SBVJF). During the school year the Lobero and SBVJF team up to provide jazz education programming to local schools, and the students get the chance to perform live on the Lobero stage at the end of their session. We’ve seen joyful performances from El Camino School this year and Hollister School last year, and hope to see many more. We’re offering a new membership structure this season to Brubeck Circle members: by making a dedicated gift of $100 or more to Jazz, members enjoy an exclusive 20% discount on all Jazz at the Lobero shows during 2015. Brubeck members will be first to know about new shows as they are announced and will be able to choose what performances they prefer to see at an exclusive price point. Of course, you can always purchase the jazz series and enjoy the terrific benefits that come with being a subscriber (big savings on ticket prices, and premier seating), but now we have an additional–and more flexible–option for those who prefer to choose their packages. Now is an exciting time to support Jazz at the Lobero, and I hope you’ll take advantage of these great offers in honor of 15 big years. Hope to see you at the theatre this season for more unforgettable evenings of jazz, as a Brubeck Circle member or subscriber.

YOU INSPIRE US. Deckers Outdoor deeply admires and proudly supports the Lobero Theatre for all of the performing arts that you bring to this community.

A self-proclaimed “Stage Mom,” Bridget Foreman has experience on both sides of the curtain. Back home in Oklahoma City, Bridget took part in many local and school productions and now supports a daughter with her own dreams of stardom. Erika, a singer, made her debut on the Lobero stage in Opera Santa Barbara’s presentation of The Pirates of Penzance in 2009. Since that time the entire Foreman family–husband Mark, Erika (14) & Dylan (11), have attended a variety of concerts, plays and operas at the Lobero. Bridget enjoys this diversity, saying, “I love that the Lobero is home to a wide variety of shows– both professional and amateur–which helps support other non-profit organizations and expands the cultural experience available in our town.” She cites an appreciation for the Lobero’s architecture and intimate feel, as well as knowledge of how much it takes to put together each and every performance

as motivating factors in her decision to join the Lobero Board.

Before coming onto the Lobero’s dynamic board, Bridget served on the board of trustees for Child Abuse Listening Mediation (CALM) for many years as VP of Finance and Board President, and has chaired various committees including Audit, Finance, and Governance. She is now exiting the CALM board due to term limits, and is eager for a next adventure. During business hours, you can find Bridget working as a partner for Bartlett, Pringle & Wolf, LLP focusing on high net worth individuals, family groups, real estate transactions, and in the hospitality industry. After that, however, the sky’s the limit.

ASSOCIATES

Worth a Million The Lobero Theatre Associates are million dollar ladies–in the 40+ years this group has been raising funds on behalf of the Lobero Theatre they have raked in over $1 million to help support this Grand Dame of a theatre. Recently, the ladies put their stamp on the women’s restroom expansion, but the Associates have made the Lobero Courtyard construction possible, as well as the purchase of the Lobero’s Steinway piano, among other projects. The Associates are already hard at work organizing the 2015 Gala, which will be held Saturday, March 28 at the Coral Casino and is sure to be “An Affair to Remember.” For those who remember, last year’s “Golden Age of Hollywood” Gala brought out some wonderful vintage formalwear. The elegance of the Coral Casino was matched by some balmy weather and a breathtaking sunset. After cocktails on the patio, guests enjoyed an exquisite dinner and danced to Justin Claveria and his band as they cranked out the hits. The centerpiece of the evening was an auction with gifts from wine and spa packages to trips and a painting by the late comedian Jonathan Winters. As guests purchased raffle tickets, they were given long strands of pearls– adding some additional bling to their already gorgeous attire. After the champagne was popped and the final numbers were in, the Gala raised $30,000 to support the Lobero Theatre’s youth programs.

Clockwise: Tony Handler & Jane Burkemper. Jean, Steve and Joan Crossland. Linda Vannier & Melissa Franzen.

Associates president Marcy Bazzani is shooting for the stars with this year’s gala, hoping to make last year’s donation look like pocket change.

Tickets for this year’s Gala can be purchased by contacting Jessica Simon at 805.679.6007 or email jsimon@lobero.com. The Associates New Member Luncheon was held on Thursday, September 25th at the La Cumbre Country Club. It was a festive affair where the new members–a few of whom are returning members–got to catch up with old friends and meet the newest recruits. The ladies enjoyed lunch while receiving updates about the theatre and enjoyed a fashion show of Lana Marme’s fall line–modeled by fellow Associates. What an inspired beginning to another year of friendship and fundraising!

Welcome to new members Danielle McCaffery, Diane Brighton, Lisa Schlagel, Catherine Pickett and Margaret Slater. The Associates are always looking for great people to join! If you’re interested in teaming up with this group of dynamic ladies, please reach out to Marcy Bazzani at marcy@villagesite.com. 13

FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR

Jim with fellow honorees.

Fundraiser of the Year: Jim Dougherty It is not outlandish to imagine that many of you reading this magazine know, or have at least met Jim Dougherty. Jim is the Lobero’s affable Director of Development, and in November was named Santa Barbara County’s Fundraiser of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He was in good company with local volunteer and philanthropy honorees Janet Garufis, Michael Towbes and Montecito Bank & Trust. It was an honor welldeserved and a long time coming. A proud son of Taft, California, Jim played high school football, baseball and basketball, gaining both a competitive spirit and a real knack for teamwork. He also learned a strong work ethic, spending summers in the oil fields of the San Joaquin Valley.

In 1984, Jim changed directions entirely and became a stockbroker. Two years later he accepted the position of CEO for BCI Geonetics Inc., where he stayed until the company was sold in 1996. He then took an interim position as Director of Chapman’s Alumni Association. They tried to hold on to him, but Santa Barbara’s and staff siren call drew him back.

The Board of the Lobero Theatre Foundation could not be more pleased or proud of Jim, his many accomplishments, and the devotion he has shown for this theatre.

Jim went to Chapman University where he earned his BA and a Secondary Teaching credential, which he put to work teaching high school Earth Science. He then attended Brown University, where he earned his Master’s degree, coached tennis, and served as Dean of Students. It was at Brown that his fundraising career began. In 1977, as his tenure as Dean was ending, he helped launch the first phase of a $225 million capital campaign.

In 1978, Jim returned to the West Coast to help restructure UCSB’s Annual Fund. Three years later he found himself at the SB Museum of Art, directing a capital campaign to build a new wing. He then moved into the realm of consulting, working with both Hospice of Santa Barbara and the Fielding Institute.

In 1998 Jim took on the difficult challenge of helping write the final chapter of the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera’s long life. The CLO had begun at the Lobero in 1984, and closed its operations for good in 2000. At that time, Jim came to work for the Lobero Theatre Foundation in earnest and, in his words, “found Nirvana.”

Since his very first days at the Lobero, Jim has been a mentor to all the staff. He entirely changed the way we fundraise, with a strong emphasis on developing personal relationships and ongoing cultivation. In the first three years, our average donation size more than doubled. His Influence has changed the way we do business and the way we think about Development work. We are fortunate to have him on our team!

THEATRE DISTRICT

Lighting up Santa Barbara Residents know that downtown is the place for local performing arts, and the recently formed Santa Barbara Historic Theatre District plans to make it even livelier. The Granada Theatre, the Lobero Theatre, and Ensemble Theatre Company at the New Vic have joined together to expand audiences and increase access to the arts.

We hope these initiatives will make for a more pleasant buying experience for you, and encourage you to get out and enjoy all the great performing arts that Santa Barbara has to offer. Look for more exciting enterprises from the Historic Theatre District in the coming year!

Perhaps in the past six months you’ve received a new magazine in the mail with the phrase, “Lighting up Santa Barbara” across the cover. This is the new Historic Theatre District performance catalog, and features all the great shows you can see at the Lobero Theatre, Granada Theatre and New Vic.

DON’T MISS THE FUN

We are fortunate in Santa Barbara to have a wealth of cultural activities year-round, but many of you told us, that it’s difficult to keep track of all the performances going on all year. We heard you, and we’re doing our part by giving you a comprehensive calendar of events for three of downtown’s busiest venues. We’ve also launched a pick-your-own subscription package with special discounts when you purchase four or more performances between the three venues. Then we made purchasing easier with one-stop shopping: you can now get tickets for all three venues at the Granada Box Office.

1st Thursday: After Hours is all about the Historic Theatre District. Each month, you’ve got a backstage pass to see what’s going on at the Lobero Theatre, The Granada Theatre, The New Vic and Arlington Theatre. Keep an eye on the 1st Thursday Passport to find out where the party can be found.

GHOSTLIGHT SOCIETY

Ghostlight Society toasts a new season Sunday, November 2 had a forecast of rain. In fact, there was a torrential downpour just two days earlier on Halloween. But, as is often the case in Santa Barbara, the storm soon passed and by Sunday it was all blue skies and crisp, clean air. Call it luck or mere meteorological coincidence, but on that Sunday, members of the Lobero Ghostlight Society kicked off the season with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and a gorgeous pink sunset. Hosted by Susan and Ron Morrow at their Fernald Point home, this event celebrated the Lobero Ghostlight Society, a dedicated group of supporters who ensure the light of live performance never goes dim on the Lobero stage. Guests were treated to delicate and expertly crafted bites from chef Chris Abbott of Savory & Thyme, self-guided tours of the Morrows’ newly built home and property, and a stunning view of the Santa Barbara coastline. Following the sunset spectacle (captured by a dozen guest cell phones), the party drifted indoors to enjoy a performance by pianist J. Scott Beaty. Familiar strains from Lés Miserábles and Phantom of the Opera were beautifully arranged, and the show closed with a visit from the ghost of Mozart, who made his presence known in a brief–but dramatic–flashing of lights. Too soon the evening ended, as sundowner winds arrived to carry guests on to their next destination. We offer our deepest thanks to Susan and Ron for opening their picturesque home for this very special event, and as always, our gratitude to the members of the Ghostlight Society, who share their love of the arts by steadfastly supporting live performance at the Lobero. 22

IN MEMORIAM

Ghostlight Luminary 2013: Remembering Baroness Léni Fé Bland Léni. She was a special lady. She has been honored by most of the nonprofits in Santa Barbara for her philanthropy and commitment to helping those in need. We at the Lobero Theatre bestowed on her the honor of the Ghostlight Society’s Luminary of the Year for 2013. The Luminary Award recognizes those individuals who have committed to maintaining and celebrating the excellence of the Performing Arts in our community. Certainly Léni was most deserving of the honor.

Sallie’s condition and offer suggestions. I will miss her, but know her spirit and grace have touched this community, and hers is a legacy that will continue to inspire.

Jim Dougherty For me it was not Léni‘s philanthropy that I will most remember, it will be the warmth of her personality and the wonderful meetings and conversations we had. She had the ability to engage and connect in a way that made you feel you were at your best. She was respectful and approached everything with a positive attitude. She always shared with me how much she loved the Lobero, which certainly helped pave the way for our discussions. And though she clearly had reason to do so, she never spent time shining her own star. Léni had a giving and caring heart, which became personal for me when she found out my wife Sallie was suffering from a serious case of shingles, an illness that she too had suffered. She called a number of times in the months before her passing to check on

For 140 years, through the leanest times and grandest evenings, the Ghostlight has cast a warm glow over our intimate stage. It’s a beacon for the muses of drama, dance and music — a spark of brilliance to keep creative spirits company from curtain-down to curtain-up. The strong and steady support of the Lobero Ghostlight Society illuminates our behind-the-scenes efforts and – like the steadfast bulb at center stage – keeps our vibrant theatre from ever going dark. 25

Fifteen Years of Jazz at the Lobero: 2000-2015 Lobero Theatre has been Santa Barbara’s home for jazz for 66 years, beginning in 1949 with the first ever jazz performance by Nappy La Marre and the Dixie Land Bobcats. The Lobero’s 1957-58 calendar was brimming with jazz talent; vocalist Anita O’Day, saxophonist Bud Shank and the Pete Jolly Trio, GRAMMY® -winning vibraphonist Cal Tjader (who appeared twice), and the ‘58 West Coast Jazz Festival. Vocalists Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae sold out their respective shows in 1962, and then the Lobero jazz programs rested until their revival in the 1970’s. These years saw Bobby Short (’72), McCoy Tyner (’77), Joe Pass (’77), Taj Majal (’78, ’79),

Pat Metheny (’79, ’80), Keith Jarrett (’80, ’83), and Dexter Gordon and Etta James performing together in 1980. 1981 witnessed gypsy jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, pianist Chick Corea, and newly-minted NEA Jazzmaster saxophonist Charles Lloyd in the first of many appearances on his home stage. 1985–1993 highlights include: Dizzy Gillespie (’89), the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (’87, ’90 & ’93), and return performances from Taj Mahal (’88 & ’93).

During the late 90’s the Lobero Theatre foundation turned inward, developing new ways to hone and cultivate jazz programming for Santa Barbara audiences, resulting in the creation of the Jazz at the Lobero series in 2000.

Lobero LIVE presents composer and multiinstrumentalist Taj Mahal on Saturday, February 21. Taj Mahal is a two-time GRAMMY®-winner and one of the most influential American blues and roots artists of the past half-century, forging a career by gathering and distilling countless musical traditions from a range of geographical and cultural sources: the Mississippi Delta, the Appalachian backwoods, the African continent, the Hawaiian islands, Europe, the Caribbean and so much more.

Season Calendar

Music Sings Like Hell presents Valentine’s Day in Hell with The Loving Stars: Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion and Anne & Pete Sibley on Saturday, February 14. It’s a Valentine’s Extravaganza as only The Devil & Miss Jones can do it! With Sarah Lee’s Woody Guthrie pedigree and Johnny Irion’s family link to John Steinbeck, you’d think they’d be dropping the F-bomb... FOLK! But in fact they’ve run the true indie singer-songwriter gamut, switching genres and band mates when it suits their muse and spirit. We can’t wait to hear more from their latest Jeff Tweedyproduced Wassaic Way. Stick around for flowers and wine and heart-shaped cookies at the after-party. Bring a date or date yourself! Three women, three guitars and the words, music, and hard-won wisdom from three lifetimes spent in pursuit of the song. On Friday, February 20, Lobero LIVE presents Eliza Gilkyson, Mary Gautier and Gretchen Peters, Three Women and The Truth, a trio of accomplished, richly talented, award-winning female songwriters whose songs cut through the murky layers of life’s complexities and bring clarity to many of the challenges we all long to make sense of. Writing from their life’s experience, these songwriters are skilled in balancing personal tales with classic underpinnings, which hint at the evocative idea that all our lives are full of events and incidents that touch on the mythic and the timeless.

34

CAMA’s Masterseries presents Dawn Upshaw, soprano on Sunday, February 22. With her rare natural warmth and transforming communicative power, Dawn Upshaw has achieved worldwide celebrity as a singer of opera and concert repertoire ranging from the sacred works of Bach to the freshest sounds of today. Jazz at the Lobero presents GRAMMY® Award winner Kurt Elling as he pays homage to a legend in Elling Swings Sinatra on Thursday, February 26. In celebration of Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday, Elling lends his own voice to Sinatra’s vast repertoire with reinterpretations of such classics as “Come Fly With Me,” “My Funny Valentine,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” *Part of the Jazz at the Lobero Series Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra presents a St. Patrick’s Day concert, Celebrating the Music of the British Isles on Tuesday, March 17. Audience favorite Alessio Bax will be appearing on piano. Enjoy Handel’s Water Music & Music For The Royal Fireworks. Subscribers can enjoy a post-concert “Bit ‘O the Blarney” craft beer tasting.

Jazz at the Lobero presents Straighten Up And Fly Right – The Nat King Cole Tribute Featuring Ramsey Lewis and John Pizzarelli on Wednesday, March 18. Nat King Cole broke the pop barrier with his smoky, smooth vocals, stringing along a huge number of solid hits right after his first “Straighten Up And Fly Right” soared up the charts in 1943. Ramsey Lewis and John Pizzarelli have crafted a tribute to the titan of fifties vocal pop, from his hits along with those singular tracks of sophisticated cool jazz that have influenced their own careers. *Part of the Jazz at the Lobero Series

Sings Like Hell presents David Olney & Sergio Webb + The Howlin’ Brothers on Saturday, March 21. Nashville’s answer to The Band, David Olney is a master wordsmith, musician and entertainer. Along with guitar virtuoso Sergio Webb, Olney has a knack for creating the ideal atmosphere for his gothic noir tunes. The Howlin’ Brothers are a trio of badass boys armed with string instruments and a passion for punk grass. Their upbeat shows are a mix of original and traditional, featuring slide banjo, harmonica, upright bass and old time fiddle. Sure to be a howlin’ good time! Santa Barbara Choral Society presents Music Then and Now on Saturday, March 28 and on Sunday, March 29. Today’s composers stand on the shoulders of the classical giants who preceded them, and American composer Rollo Dilworth is no exception. Conductor JoAnne Wasserman will lead the 80+ voices of the Choral Society and Orchestra in the works of the classical masters who influenced the dynamic and engaging Dr. Dilworth, selections of Dr. Dilworth’s works, and those of Norwegian Composer, Ola Gjeilo.

CAMA’s Masterseries presents Ian Bostridge, tenor on Thursday, April 23. English tenor Ian Bostridge is an artist of major prominence in the world of classical music. His insight into the intimate relationship between music and poetry led the BBC to feature him in a 1997 documentary exploring Schubert’s haunting song cycle Winterreise, which Bostridge will perform in its entirety at the Lobero. Sings Like Hell presents An Evening with Beso on Saturday, April 25. Beso has an all-star lineup of internationally renowned musicians bringing drive and passion to Gypsy Rock. Their love for tradition has collided with modern sensibility and has transformed the genre into a vibrant new beast: darker, faster, more danceable, more blues, more Gypsy. Beso’s indelible fingerprint brings Jazz Manouche to a new generation and the 21st century. Fans of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli, prepare to be blown away!

Jazz at the Lobero presents Charles Lloyd & Friends featuring Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland on Tuesday, April 28. Recently celebrating his 75th birthday, Lloyd is more vital than ever–regularly playing in different ensembles made up of the most innovative players in jazz. This very special performance features the guitar wizardry of Bill Frisell and Eric Leisz alongside Eric Harland on drums and Ruben Rogers on bass. *Part of the Jazz at the Lobero Series Lobero LIVE presents A Very Special SOLO Evening with Joan Armatrading on Wednesday, May 6. In her 42+ years of touring, GRAMMY® nominated guitarist Joan Armatrading has never embarked on a solo world tour. During this–her last global tour–Armatrading goes it alone, playing guitar, piano and singing in an intimate evening of music including songs that span her entire career. 35

CAMA’s Masterseries presents Tetzlaff-Vogt Duo on Monday, May 11. The Tetzlaff-Vogt Duo brings together two stellar German talents: violinist Christian Tetzlaff, who has wowed Masterseries audiences in two solo recitals and with his Tetzlaff Quartet, and pianist Lars Vogt, one of the leading soloists and chamber musicians of his generation. Sings Like Hell presents a ???MYSTERY DATE??? on Saturday, May 23. This Sings Like Hell tradition keeps everyone guessing, especially Miss Jones! Stay tuned at SingsLikeHell.org for more info. Jazz at the Lobero presents An Evening with Al Jarreau on Friday, June 12. Al Jarreau’s unique vocal style and innovative musical expressions have made him one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed performers of our time with seven GRAMMY® Awards, scores of international music awards and popular accolades worldwide. Sings Like Hell presents John Fullbright with Special Guests Kevin Welch & Dustin Welch on Saturday, June 27. Fullbright inhabits his songs’ narrators completely, his old-soul voice fleshing out complex characters and subtle narratives with a gifted sense of understatement. Kevin Welch’s poetic songs have an almost film-like quality in their vision and beauty. The melodies are a beautiful cacophony of Celtic and Appalachian folk music set to driving rock and dexterous jazz rhythms, with big harmonies sung in a gritty, raw, archaic-sounding language. The most wonderful part about this particular evening at Sings Like Hell is that Kevin, Dustin and John are old friends who have written and recorded songs together. Brace yourself, Santa Barbara–this show is going to be Epic!

Comedy Maria Bamford will be bringing her own special brand of stand-up comedy to the Lobero Theatre on Sunday, March 1. Maria started her performing arts career in Duluth, Minnesota 36

at the age of 11 where she starred in the Chester Park Elementary production of How the West Was REALLY Won! Now, a short number of decades later Rolling Stone has named her one of their 50 Funniest People. KCLU RADIO presents Ask Me Another, the rambunctious live radio show from NPR that blends brainteasers, pub trivia, comedy and music into an hour of mind-bending fun on Saturday, May 2. Host Ophira Eisenberg invites guests and audience members to stretch their noggins, tickle their funny bones while a celebrity VIP–that’s Very Important Puzzler–will dazzle from the hot seat in a game custom built for Santa Barbara. This show will be recorded live at the Lobero Theatre for a future national broadcast.

The festival culminates with the premiere of a collaborative new work that will go on to tour the globe. Look up, hold your breath, and don’t miss this otherworldly opportunity to experience floor to aerial dancing. Adam Barruch began his career as a young actor, performing professionally on Broadway and in film and television working with prominent figures such as Tony Bennett, Jerry Herman and Susan Stroman. He later received dance training at LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and Performing Arts. After three years, he graduated early and was accepted into the dance department at The Juilliard School. Since then, Adam has been on a dizzying path, collecting awards and residencies for his choreography. His company has performed at Jacob’s Pillow, the Harris Theatre, Bates Dance Festival and The Yard. DANCEworks Executive Director Dianne Vapnek was impressed by Adam’s stellar reputation among fellow choreographers, and his swift emergence as a major new talent. Vapnek is eager to support this up-and-coming talent by offering him a one-month DANCEworks residency in September 2015. This will give Adam time to cultivate the idea he will bring to life in Santa Barbara: a contemporary dance treatment of Stephen Sondheim’s venerated and beloved musical, Sweeney Todd. Adam hopes to incorporate local actors, singers and dancers to work with his own company of eight dancers. He will reimagine the songs of this modern theater master as never seen before.

Keeping up with DANCEworks Choreographers Aszure Barton, who made her ravishing dance Busk during the first DANCEworks season in 2009, continues to shine. Aszure and her collaborators recently won the first ever Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation Prize, given biennially for best new dance with original music for Awaa. The Gross Family Foundation commented, “Aszure Barton has earned the distinguished reputation of producing striking choreography for stage and film, and continues to develop intensely collaborative productions around the globe.” DANCEworks’ 2010 and 2013 choreographer -in-residency,Larry Keigwin, celebrated the opening of If/Then, a new musical starring Idina Menzel, which Larry choreographed, and prepared a new work for American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company, which premiered in February of last year. 2011 choreographer-in-residence Doug Elkins sold out the work-in-progress showing of his new Hapless Bizarre, paired with Mo(or)town/Redux–the acclaimed dance that Doug made onstage at the Lobero during his DANCEworks stay–at

Maryland’s American Dance Institute last February. New York Times’ critic Alastair Macaulay, reviewed Mo(or)town as part of the Fall for Dance Festival last fall as, “One of the most compelling dance creations of this century.”

The Brian Brooks Moving Company, in residence at DANCEworks in 2012, made its debut at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with Brian’s new work Run Don’t Run. In addition, Brian continues to perform his duet with ballet superstar Wendy Whelan as part of her “Restless Creature Tour,” across the United States. DANCEworks’ 2014 choreographer-inresidence, Mark Dendy, is continuing a streak of prodigious productivity with an ambitious new work, Labyrinth. Described as, “A tragicomic, autobiographically inspired retelling of the Theseus myth,” Labyrinth premiered at New York’s Abrons Arts Center in October. The New York Times reported, “Labyrinth combines Mr. Dendy’s confessional speeches with dance, video and Heather Christian’s feisty and imaginative songs. […] As long as artists like Mr. Dendy are making such distinctive, impulsive, personal work, there’s hope for the old town yet.”

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW Conductor, Nicholas McGegan

About Music Academy of the West Communications Manager Tim Dougherty takes a few minutes to discuss the ongoing partnership between this venerable institution and the Lobero Theatre. We look forward to a dynamic Summer Festival coming up June 15 – August 8! What is your title/role with the organization? I contribute in a lot of ways as an editor and writer, but my responsibilities mainly involve media relations, publication management, and overseeing the Music Academy website. Are you enjoying your role within the Music Academy of the West, and the larger Santa Barbara classical music scene? I have a great job! My colleagues and I pride ourselves on presenting an annual classical music festival worthy of this community and the many outstanding musicians who come to the Academy each summer to study and perform. What brought you to the Music Academy? I was editing Cal Poly Magazine, commuting from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo five days a week, when I saw a posting for my

current position. I immediately pursued the opportunity, and eight years later here I am.

How long has the Music Academy been performing at the Lobero Theatre?

Tell us a little bit about the Music Academy of the West.

The Music Academy’s association with the Lobero Theatre extends back to the year of our founding, 1947. In fact, I believe the first event the Academy presented at The Lobero was a recital featuring none other than Lotte Lehmann in July of that year.

The Music Academy was founded in 1947 by a group of Southern California arts patrons and musicians, including the legendary soprano Lotte Lehmann and the famed conductor Otto Klemperer. After initially setting up shop at Cate School in Carpinteria, the Music Academy relocated to its current home, the former estate

How was your experience last summer during your festival, and what do you think of the newly renovated Lobero?

We want to provide our patrons with comfortable seating and generous sightlines, and we want to provide our performers with first-rate facilities. The Lobero delivers on all counts. of John Percival Jefferson, in 1951. Our principal programmatic offering is an eight-week Summer Festival, during which the Music Academy presents some 200 public events including orchestra concerts, chamber recitals, and a fully staged opera. This year’s festival dates are June 15 to August 8. What does an organization like the Music Academy look for when choosing a space to perform? We generally look for venues that promise an optimal experience for patrons and performers alike.

We enjoyed an immensely successful 2014 season, and are very pleased with the new and improved Lobero. Our patrons especially like the roomier seats. What’s coming up from the Music Academy this season? The coming season’s guest conductors will include the effervescent Nicholas McGegan, who will perform at The Lobero. More details coming soon!

Most of our programs include a partnership with another youth or arts-focused non-profit organization. Each brings their strengths to the partnership, making for more effective and efficient service delivery. Participation in these programs gives children necessary tools for future success in all aspects of life including creativity and problem solving, confidence, greater focus and dedication, and the ability to collaborate with and learn from their peers. It also inspires children to continue pursuing the arts throughout their education, and in some cases throughout their careers. Students and their families have the opportunity to experience live performance at the Lobero Theatre free of charge for the following performances as part of the Lobero’s Ticket InReach program. s s s s s

s Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation (SBVJF) – During the school year the Lobero and SBVJF team up to provide jazz education and instruction to local schools. These students will have the chance to perform live on the Lobero stage. s Jensen’s Music Camp – A series of three weeklong summer intensives designed to teach students to play an instrument of their choice, culminating in a professional performance on the Lobero stage. (In partnership with New Noise Music Festival) In partnership with New Noise Music, we will bring more than a dozen student bands together for a weekend of performance competition in a Battle of the Bands. The winners receive studio time to create a professional recording, and three additional performance opportunities at local festivals. The Lobero is the home stage for the culminating performances of a number of arts-specific educational programs, and offer Youth Performance subsidies, which underwrite a portion of theatre expenses to ensure the success of these performances and encourage their continued growth at the Lobero.

VOLUNTEER UPDATE

Monie Photography

My first year as House Manager has been nothing short of fantastic. In serving our patrons and the community through a wide variety of events this past year, I’ve gained a greater appreciation for teamwork. Teamwork is what we’re all about here at the Lobero and I love it. Our volunteer ushers fill a special role in fulfilling our mission to be the community’s stage and cultural heart. As most theatre organizations operate on tight budgets without the needed funds to pay for positions like ushers, volunteers become a critical part of daily operations. Our volunteer ushers, who serve as part of the “foundation” of this great organization, deserve high praise. This past September we held a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner to thank all of the dedicated volunteers that support this organization– including the Lobero’s Board, and Associates, but especially to honor the Ushers. During this event, I unveiled the new “Usher Reward Program” which recognizes superior service by this talented group. The Reward Program consists of recognizing an usher of the Month and Usher of the Year. Criteria measured included attendance, customer service and level of service. The Usher of the Month wears an identifiable Usher of the Month Badge, and the Usher of the Year will be chosen from amongst the 12 Usher of the Month winners, earning a lapel pin, a certificate and recognition in BACKSTAGE at the Lobero Magazine.

For our first year with this new program, I knew exactly who best internalizes our mission and maintains a high standard of service. Therefore, I had the honor of recognizing, Phil Parson!

Cheers to the Lobero’s Ushers

“I was very surprised and honored to receive the first Lobero Usher of the Year Award. It is a privilege to be part of the great team at this historic and magical place.” – Phil Parson I hope you keep an eye out for the Usher of the Month and Usher of the Year next time you’re at the theatre, and make sure to thank them for their service. We couldn’t do it without them! I look forward to seeing you at the theatre,

Daniel Ramirez House Manager, Lobero Theatre Clockwise: House Manager Daniel Ramirez, Great turnout for the Usher Appreciation Party, Usher of the Year Phil Parson, Jim Dougherty & David Asbell raise a glass to the Lobero’s Ushers.

SERVING SANTA BARBARA

The History of a Community Stage The Lobero Theatre has a varied history of uses. Built originally as an opera house in 1873, it was re-built in 1924 to serve as home to the Drama branch of the Community Arts Association. It has since been home to theatre, dance, film, and has become a celebrated venue for music of all types, from chamber to choral, rock ‘n’ roll to jazz. The performing arts are central to the Lobero and its mission, but history shows that this is also Santa Barbara’s Town Hall, and has served in many capacities over the decades. When the community has a need to gather, the Lobero is the place to which we turn. After the 1925 earthquake, the relatively unscathed theatre became a shelter for local citizens. Since then, the Lobero has accommodated lectures, shareholder meetings, graduations and workshops. It has many times been a forum for political debate, and a pulpit for religious assemblies. The stage has hosted wedding celebrations, birthday fetes and bat mitzvahs. Families have also gathered here to say goodbye to loved ones, including local heroes like Bob Smith and Jonathan Winters. The Lobero is Santa Barbara’s home for youth performances, and many of you, your children, or your grandchildren have performed on its stage. From ballerinas attending local dance schools, to fledgling rock bands, to young musical theatre actresses and actors with dreams of Broadway. The Lobero is their theatre, their first real stage, and a place they will always remember.

It is a remarkable history, and oh what stories this stage could tell! Santa Barbara has changed dramatically in 142 years, and the Lobero has always been at the heart of it all. Whatever the next century brings, you can be sure that this theatre will remain the historic home for our vibrant arts community. 53

Santa Barbara has made history again and again at the Lobero Theatre. From its re-building in 1924 to its beautiful restoration in 2013, we have shown how much this theatre means to us as a community. Now it is time to look to the future. Towbes Family Endowment for Dance From Martha Graham to Mikhail Baryshnikov, from rising stars to toddlers in tutus, the Lobero stage has hosted the finest dancers of our time, as well as those who wish to follow in their remarkable footsteps. The Towbes Family Endowment for Dance was created to keep our dance program en pointe and growing by leaps and bounds. Lobero Theatre’s Endowment for Theatre The stars of Hollywood, Broadway and London’s West End have been sashaying in and out of our spotlight since 1924. The Endowment for Theatre will strengthen our dramatic success, keeping the curtain up for both esteemed local troupes and acclaimed touring companies from across the globe. Lobero Theatre’s Endowment for American Roots Music The Lobero grew up alongside American music, from jazz, blues and folk to boogie-woogie, rock and funk. Legendary artists Dave Brubeck, Dr. John, Odetta and Joan Baez have treasured the Lobero for its fine audiences, acoustics and ambience. The Endowment for American Roots Music keeps us in tune with a nation that has always marched to its own soulful beat. Lobero Theatre’s Endowment for Classical Music As intimate as it is elegant, the Lobero is the ideal setting for arias and overtures–and for introducing young ears to the genre’s inimitable icons. Isaac Stern and Andras Schiff, Marian Anderson and Kiri Te Kanawa have all performed here. The Endowment for Classical Music ensures that our halls will always resound with music. Kelly J. Morgan Endowment for Youth The Lobero has always been a community stage, a place where young artists have found their wings and chased their dreams. Just ask David Crosby, who first performed here in his teens. The Kelly J. Morgan Endowment for Youth, named in memory of a young thespian that loved the theatre, provides an opportunity for children to explore their talents on the Lobero stage.
