president’s message AMY MACLEOD, LOBERO BOARD PRESIDENT
I’m With Her
Welcome to our Spring and Summer edition of Backstage at the Lobero. This is my final message to our Lobero Family, as I enter the last months of my term as Board President. I have been honored to serve alongside a talented and engaged group of fellow Board members to support the Lobero’s amazing staff, working together to fulfill the Lobero’s non-profit mission. I am proud to share some of the Board and staff’s accomplishments and other highlights over the past three years. In 2018 we completed a five-year strategic plan that included a 30-year reserve study to ensure the ongoing physical health of the beautiful, historic Lobero Theatre while reducing the need for major capital campaigns. Under the leadership of Executive Director David Asbell (who along with Administrative Director Marianne Clark celebrated their 20-year anniversaries in 2017!), the Lobero expanded its programming through Lobero LIVE performances and by welcoming new renters. Further, and thanks to the generosity of many, we grew the theater’s endowment to support programming, operations and building maintenance, and broadened income sources to help create long-term financial stability. The Board and staff have worked as a cohesive team to accomplish these goals. This year we are building on those successes by launching a new three-year blueprint focused on embracing the many community organizations that call the Lobero home. First and foremost, we have invested in a strategic promotions and marketing plan that supports the theater’s renters and elevates the visibility of all activity happening on the Lobero stage. In the coming months we will develop an improved concessions system to better serve audiences before performances and during intermissions. And of course we are continually working to upgrade the theater’s technical systems to improve production quality for all
performances. In 2019 we will install energy-efficient LED lighting that is both dramatically more versatile and easier to operate, thereby reducing stagehand labor costs. These strategic plans to improve every aspect of the theater are critical to the work we do. Our Board and staff spend significant time considering the Lobero’s role in the community. I feel confident that our organization is living up to its mission of service to this theater, to the non-profit arts sector and to our audiences. I’m pleased to know that as I leave this role of President, the theater is in a stronger position because of the teamwork of these dedicated employees and volunteers.
As a supporter, you are an important part of the equation. Once you walk through the theatre’s doors, you become a part of this Lobero Family. Whether you are a performer, a donor, an audience member, a volunteer or a staff member, you are an element of what makes this theater such a vibrant home for the performing arts. I look forward to sharing many more seasons of wonderful music, dance, theater and film with my family and with yours. With appreciation,
Amy MacLeod Lobero Board President 5

The Lobero Experience
Over the last six months, I’ve had the honor of meeting many of our donors, patrons and talent. Without fail, each expresses a tremendous love for the Lobero Theatre and what’s known as the Lobero Experience. If you’re a frequent visitor, you know how it feels to be in the house when performers share personal stories about playing here, and somehow it feels like you’re just chatting with an old friend. An experience at the Lobero is about more than seeing a performance, it’s also about connecting and creating memories with others. Our staff and crew work to create an atmosphere of intimacy, adding personal touches whenever we can. We view every performer, renter, patron and donor as part of the Lobero family.
This palpable quality of home, inclusion and connection inspires artists and patrons alike to return time and again. We hope you feel at home when you are here. Please help us to continue cultivating this unique atmosphere by using the enclosed envelope to make a gift to help secure our performing arts home for years to come. Kindly,

Leaving a Legacy of Love It was 18 years ago that I sat down with Executive Director David Asbell and Administrative Director Marianne Clark to discuss joining the Lobero family as a full time staff member. Although I had been a resident of Santa Barbara since 1978, I was not familiar with the theater’s history, nor had I attended any performances. I had recently been involved with the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera and the Granada Theatre. Little did I realize how much this place would come to mean to me. It was an interesting and challenging time for the Lobero. The challenges brought out the best from our Board, our staff and our supporters to help confirm and revitalize the Lobero’s role as Santa Barbara’s community theatre. It was a time for defining and growing the whole Lobero family. It was not always easy to reach our fundraising goals and
end the year with a balanced budget, but over time–and with your help, we grew our programs, our goals and reached a certain level of financial stability. Today our challenge is to enlist you, our Lobero family, to help us in endowing the future of our community theatre. Participation in the Heritage Campaign allows members to continue their legacy and commitment to ensuring the Lobero will always be a gathering place to celebrate the arts and great artists. Whether through a cash gift, a bequest, or a blend of the two, a contribution to the Lobero endowment makes a lasting impact on this special venue. If the Lobero has played a role in the life of your family, please consider becoming a member of our Heritage Society.

We wanted to do something different. Something special and unique, with the intimacy to match the intimacy of our theatre. Doug ElkinsWhen Choreography, you etc. take
on a new project–especially something as hard
Reflections on a decade of DANCEworks When you take on a new project, it’s impossible to picture it ten years later. It was 2008 when Dianne Vapnek approached me about a partnership with the Lobero to continue the work of her SUMMERDANCE festival. The feedback from the visiting artists expressed the impact of these residencies to their careers, and ignited the idea to provide a month-long creative residency with only one requirement: to share the work with Santa Barbara audiences.
The idea was unconventional … and perfect for the Lobero. DANCEworks evolved from the SUMMERDANCE experience of providing choreographers during their festival residence with time and space to create new work. SUMMERDANCE built enduring relationships with the contemporary choreographers it presented from 1997-2006 such as Doug Varone (who will be the 2019 Choreographer-in-Residence), Doug Elkins, Larry Keigwin, Mark Dendy, Aszure Barton and Brian Brooks–all of whom have returned for a DANCEworks residency. We are here as a resource to the community, and it’s our mission to bring creative ideas to life. DANCEworks is a perfect example of this; it has never been our idea and we would never take ownership away from Dianne and her dynamic board of

directors, but it simply won’t work without the Lobero driving it. The Lobero team works closely with each visiting artist and tailors their residency to meet their needs. No two residencies have been the same, posing some wild and memorable challenges– everything from a huge delivery of two tons of rubber mulch to managing the daily minutia involved in housing a company. Our talented crew and staff take on each challenge with creativity and enthusiasm. Our mission is simple–preserve and maintain the Lobero Theatre and facilitate the finest in the performing arts. We provide the space that holds all of this wonderful activity along with the personnel needed. It is the performers–the artists, dancers, musicians, and visionaries like Dianne Vapnek–that are the lifeblood for a vibrant performing arts scene. The choreographers that she’s brought to this stage have been nothing short of exemplary. I think the greatest endorsement the program could receive is that all past choreographers were represented in that show. (more on pg 22) These are successful, in-demand artists, and it says a lot that they all made a point to be part of the 10th Anniversary showcase. We’re honored to work with Dianne, and we’re very proud to have added something valuable to the modern dance community.

lobero theatre associates
Dorado Schmitt & the Django Festival All-Stars
Compassion, concerts and a continuing legacy One of the perks of being a Lobero Theatre Associate is VIP treatment and top-notch social events The Lobero Theatre Associates are a dynamic women’s auxiliary group who have raised over $1 million for the Lobero over their 42 year history. It’s thanks to them that audiences can enjoy the Lobero’s outdoor entertaining space in the back courtyard, the Steinway Grand piano, and the updated ladies restroom. It’s always gratifying to see this group out enjoying the theater they work so hard to preserve. On November 20, the Associates were featured guests at a concert by Dorado Schmitt and his band of all-star players from the Django Reinhardt Festival. Direct from France, these jazz impresarios have delighted fans all over the world with their contagious hot swing. It was wonderful to have over twenty Associates in attendance and enjoying the VIP reception including Lobero Board member Janet McCann and her husband John, Joan & Steven Crossland, and founding member Hope Kelly.
Beyond the bricks of the Esplanade, the Associates hosted their annual Holiday Tea at the beautifully decorated Four Seasons Biltmore. This year the tea held special significance as it’s the first time many returned to the luxury hotel since it suffered massive damage in the 2018 debris flow. Held on December 5, many full- and minimembers caught up with friends and collected a mountain of unwrapped toys for disadvantaged children. This soiree centered around an enticing display of tea sandwiches and desserts and holiday tunes played by pianist Fredrik Rosvall–who has been entertaining the Associates for the last 10 years. Special thanks to event co-chairs Mindy Denson and Paige Beard for their hard work continuing this holiday tradition. We look forward to many nights out to come with these fabulous fundraisers.

For over 145 years, through the leanest times and grandest evenings, the Ghostlight has cast a warm glow over our intimate stage. It’s a beacon for the muses of drama, dance and music – a spark of brilliance to keep creative spirits company from curtain-down to curtain-up. The strong and steady support of the Lobero Ghostlight Society illuminates our behind-the-scenes efforts and – like the steadfast bulb at center stage – keeps our vibrant theatre from ever going dark.

volunteer update
In Appreciation of our Ushers Kate Winn-Rogers, Daniel Ramirez, Mindy Denson
In October, several ushers and I took part in an important course in emergency response with other concert venue support staff aimed at making our venues safer.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program teaches disaster preparedness and response skills including fire safety, light search-and-rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The training included both classroom and live exercises, allowing CERT members to see what it would be like to assist others in the event that professional first responders are not immediately available. CERT members are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
Later that month, (and on a lighter note) we celebrated another fine year of volunteering with our annual Volunteer Appreciation evening. This year’s event was held just a few days before Halloween, and many of our ushers got into the spirit by coming in costume. Each year this event gets better and better. The Martinez Brothers had many of the attendees up on their feet and dancing, and dinner furnished by State & Fig had everyone smiling in satisfaction. Thanks again for all you do, and for being such an integral part of our Lobero family! Rest easy–when you visit the Lobero Theatre, we are wellprepared to assist you in any circumstance.

Miye Ota Turns 100 Posh Polo Party This Weekend
This recital was truly something to celebrate as, for two nights, Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theatre became the world capital of contemporary dance. Thanks to Dianne Vapnek, the visionary patron behind first Summerdance and now, for the past 10 years, the DANCEworks residencies at the Lobero, our city has acquired a unique currency among the most exciting dance makers of the 21st century, and for this, the 10th anniversary of DANCEworks at the Lobero, they all showed up.
Jake Busey on Failure and Fame Ca’ Dario’s Expanding Epicurean Empire
In some ways the most amazing thing about the two acts of this program–the first a new work in progress by Doug Elkins, and the second a tribute to DANCEworks featuring eight amazing solos–was the fact that both things were happening on the same night. Here was the core DANCEworks experience, a substantial new work developed entirely on-site in the theater; here also was a comprehensive review of the extraordinary range of styles that the program has hosted over the past decade. Kintsugi, with its sophisticated movement vocabulary and dramatic, percussive fan work, gave the audience a perfect sense of what is at the heart of the DANCEworks mission. Ideas of all sizes came tumbling out of choreographer Elkins and went coursing through the lithe bodies of his talented company of six dancers. Infused with hip-hop, grounded by capoeira, and all Elkins, this work is a potential tour de force, and it will be exciting to track its development as the team takes it further.
Nova Loverro, Larry Keigwin, anne Vapnek, Di y, nd De k ar M Brian Brooks
After the intermission, Larry Keigwin took the stage to introduce an extraordinary sequence of performances that included Adam Barruch’s inspired take on Sweeney Todd, Mark Dendy’s unforgettable “Rumsfeld” from Elvis Everywhere, a wild excursion on Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused” danced by Jason Cianciulli and choreographed by Kate Weare, and touching, personal solos by Keigwin, Doug Varone, and Brian Brooks. Long may DANCEworks flourish! * Originally printed in the Santa Barbara Independent, Tuesday, September 11, 2018 Azure Barton, William Briscoe
“Creating new dances is an extraordinarily collaborative effort that takes quality time to develop and process. youth outreach We bring the arts alive for thousands each year. Youth & Community Programs
In the Classroom
The Lobero’s Youth and Community Outreach programs are designed to create a meaningful, memorable performing arts experience for local students, seniors and families.
Residency programs from Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz provide 6-8 weeks of in-classroom music history and performance training for local 4th, 5th and 6th graders, culminating in a heart-warming performance on the Lobero stage. In March, Derek Douget and his band will visit high school and college jazz bands to lend an expert ear and some hands-on instruction.
On the Stage In the coming year, more than 700 students will sing, dance, act or play an instrument on the Lobero stage. Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation, Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, Gustafson Dance, Girls Rock SB, Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble Theatre, Santa Barbara Revels, Santa Barbara Aerial Arts Festival, Montecito Union School District, Crane School and the AHA! Sing it Out program will all bring their showcase performances to the Lobero for a professional experience.
Thanks to our sponsors SBVJF’s residencies are funded in part by the Organizational Development Program using funds provided by the City of Santa Barbara in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture, in addition to generous support by The Towbes Fund for the Performing Arts, a field of interest of the Santa Barbara Foundation.
In the Audience Throughout the year, at-risk and low-income students, seniors and families are invited to join our audience for a live arts experience– one that for many is their first. This year more than 2,000 individuals will receive complimentary tickets for Nebula Dance Lab, Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz, Santa Barbara Dance Theatre, It’s Magic! and other Lobero LIVE events.
Our Youth and Brubeck Circle sponsors and donors make these programs possible. Consider making a gift today to bring quality performing arts education to Santa Barbara’s students. Harold P. McAlister Foundation Brown Family Foundation 27

a history of greatness SPECIAL ANNIVERSARIES FOR RENTERS
CAMA at 100: The Centennial Season of Santa Barbara’s oldest arts organization
Opera Santa Barbara at 25: Returning to its first home, the Lobero Theatre
Beautiful music, exciting music, profound music–Community Arts Music Association has been bringing this gift to Santa Barbara for 100 years. Born in the dark days following World War I, flourishing during the roaring twenties, and eluding demise during the great depression, CAMA has endured through a story of struggle, survival and triumph as compelling as the world-renowned music and performers it presents.
In 1993 Marilyn Gilbert and the late Nathan Rundlett founded the Santa Barbara Grand Opera and the company’s first production was Die Fledermaus at the Lobero Theatre. Subsequent early productions included a company premiere of La Traviata – its first grand opera (1995), four performances of Carmen during Old Spanish Days, and then the “little company that could” launched its first full season with La Bohème, Don Giovanni and Rigoletto in 1996. The company officially changed its name to Opera Santa Barbara before their tenth anniversary season with productions of Don Giovanni and Madama Butterfly. Subsequent years saw performances of Rigoletto, Ballo in Maschera, Italiana in Algeri, Faust, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci and Elixir of Love.
CAMA’s roots date to the 1919 Civic Music Committee and the 1921 Orchestra Committee (Music Branch) of the Community Arts Association (CAA). Though they differed in approach, the two organizations were in accord in wanting to promote and provide the very best in classical music for Santa Barbara. It was the CAA that, in 1922, took on the monumental task of re-building Jose Lobero’s declining Opera House into the Lobero Theatre that we know today. Both organizations continued their work side-by-side until 1926, when the CAA Music Branch took on the work of the Civic Music Committee. In 1941, the Music Branch incorporated as a separate entity, CAMA, and continued the work begun in 1919. CAMA’s presentation of live classical music performances featuring world-renowned artists and orchestras over the past 100 years is testament to its founders and successors who have upheld their commitment to enrich Santa Barbara’s cultural life, and those who have supported this legacy. Today, CAMA continues to enrich the lives of the Santa Barbara region and its visitors to experience and enjoy classical music through live performances and educational outreach for future generations. Celebrate the centennial season at the Lobero with the continuation of CAMA’s Masterseries: Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (March 9), Garrick Ohlsson (March 30), Augustin Hadelich (April 17), Mischa Maisky and Lily Maisky (May 6)
“This anniversary season not only celebrates the last 25 years, but also documents our commitment to the next 25 and beyond.”– Kostis Protopapas Artistic & General Director Kostis Protopapas pledges to nurture the future of opera by presenting contemporary works alongside the classics, to embrace change and to continuously seek new ways to share our vision and enrich lives. Opera SB’s 25th Anniversary Season returns to the Lobero for a compelling pair of company premieres, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (March 1/3) and The Crucible (April 26/28) 35

what you should know ABOUT LAURIE BENTSON KAUTH
Last February, a new jazz-centric residency program made its debut thanks to the support of the Brubeck Circle members and board member Laurie Bentson Kauth, who introduced the idea and made it all possible. I spent an afternoon with Laurie to learn more about this compelling residency, and what fuels her philanthropic involvement with the Lobero Theatre. As interviewed by Brandon Mowery, Lobero Theatre Director of Development BM: What was your first experience at the Lobero? LBK: When my daughter was in high school, I had some friends who would attend Sings Like Hell concerts, and I got involved with that. That was really fun. BM: How were you introduced to the Lobero board, and what is that experience like for you? LBK: Heritage Director Jim Dougherty called me up one day, out of the blue. Jim’s one of the most charming people I’ve ever met in my life! I’m really impressed with how much love there is and how excited and invested all of the Board members at the Lobero are. BM: What does the Lobero mean to you? LBK: It’s the most local theater that we have. It’s special. When you are out on the Esplanade, Backstage or back in the tent, people know each other. It’s really our town square. 40
BM: How did you meet Derek Douget? LBK: My daughter went to law school in New Orleans and got a dog, which led to meeting a pet care center director, who became a wonderful friend to the entire Kauth family. She would host us at her Mardi Gras parade parties (with the most amazing gumbo!), and that’s how I met her brother, Derek, who was a jazz musician. It started as a little bit of running joke that whenever I would see Derek around Mardi Gras that I would tell him he had to perform at the Lobero. BM: At what point did the educational component for the residency start shining through? LBK: Established musicians in New Orleans are very cognizant of the next generation of young people in the arts. Almost every one of them plays an instrument, dances, and participates in festivals and parades. Musicians like Derek look to foster these young people. He is not only a talented player, he’s also the director of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival music program alongside friends and other notable performers.
“When we performed together, it really reminded my why I love jazz so much.” – Iyana, Santa Barbara High School student
The Brubeck Circle Jazz Residency returns March 11-15, stay tuned for more details!
I have to thank Administrative Director Marianne Clark at the Lobero and Kai Tepper at the Santa Barbara Bowl for their brainstorming, and helping this to work with Youth Programs at each venue. BM: What were the biggest takeaways from the 2018 residency? LBK: It was beyond my wildest dreams! The band embraced their role and made it very special. One moment that stood out is when they met a group of teens called the Jazz Villains, through Notes for Notes. The minute Derek’s band started playing in their tiny little recording studio, the expressions on their faces were priceless.

BM: What are your hopes moving forward with this residency? LBK: There was such a buzz created, and I’m only sorry we couldn’t get to everybody. I think we can get in front of more kids this year. It’s still amazing to me how it all came together!

WILL POWER, OR THE POWER OF A WILL Almost everyone feels better with a plan. In a nutshell, estate planning is deciding what you want done with what you own. The good news is that you can provide for the people and causes important to you by taking simple steps now. Creating your plan for the future can be easy and even enjoyable. While an attorney should always draft your will, we can help demystify the process and prepare you for meeting your attorney with these simple steps:
1
REVIEW YOUR PLANS FOR FAMILY
4
You can give some assets to family right away and others over time. Ask us how you can provide an income stream or a lump sum to a loved one and achieve your personal and inheritance goals.
ITEMIZE YOUR ASSETS
CONSIDER CHARITY
Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write something you own. On the right side, write the name or names of the person(s) you wish to receive that item or asset.
Remember to include any charities that are important to you in your plan. If you have given during life, then consider providing for these organizations through your estate. Ask us about plans like charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities that can help your family and our mission.
5
ORGANIZE YOUR ESTATE
2 3
Make the process of organizing your estate and plans even easier by downloading our free Estate Planning Guide (LTFHeritage.org). This fill-in-the-blank guide walks you through the process of gathering information about what you own, your family, and your goals. WRITE DOWN QUESTIONS Consider practical questions, such as, “If I give my house to my adult son and my adult daughter, what will they do with it?” If you come up with a question that you can’t seem to find a solution for, make a note to ask your attorney.
6 7
VISIT YOUR ATTORNEY Bring the information and questions you have gathered to your attorney. He or she can draft a will or trust that will achieve your goals. You complete the plan through a simple signing process. UPDATE YOUR PLAN Update your estate plan as your life changes. Marriages, births, and deaths are all events that may make you want you to revise your plans.
For more questions on how the Lobero Heritage Campaign can assist you with your estate planning needs, contact Jim Dougherty at jdougherty@lobero.org / 805.679.6005 / LTFHeritage.org
In Memoriam Betty Jo Stephens (1932-2018) was born on March 1, 1932 in Gadsden, Alabama to Andrew Jackson Jordan and Clonda Mae Beard. She loved listening to her father play fiddle and took great pride growing up in the house he built for her and her siblings. Although she loved her home in the South, she moved to Los Angeles in the 1950’s. There she raised her two children, Bruce and Joi while working full-time in the café she owned. After marrying businessman and scientist John A. Stephens, the family settled in Santa Barbara in 1969, where Betty would go on to spend the rest of her life building a thriving business and contributing widely to the community. Betty was one of small handful of female CEO’s when she ran Excel Mineral Company after taking over for her husband during his long battle with Alzheimer’s. She expanded the Jonny Cat Litter brand from coast to coast with hundreds of employees and company headquarters in Goleta. Betty also championed tirelessly for the advancement of women’s causes and rights, and brought down the gavel at the very first meeting of the Democratic Women of Santa Barbara. Betty was known for her generosity to many non-profit organizations, and for hosting lavish fundraisers at her Hope Ranch home. She had a passion for the arts, and was especially involved in the former Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera and the renovation of the Granada Theatre. She felt a strong connection to jazz music, and spent many a night enjoying the Jazz at the Lobero series. Betty is survived by her daughter Joi Stephens and husband Frank Kaminski, her grandchildren John Stephens and husband Christopher Stephens-Gusman, Ryan Chacon and fiancé Heather Ambrose, Alexandra Djordjevic-Stephens, Ernie Harries, and her great-granddaughter Ila Harries.
Marikay Bartoli (1950-2018) was born on February 25, 1950 in LaSalle, Illinois to Peter and Harriett (Dicken) Bartoli, the youngest of four children. That same year her family moved to La Canada, California to a home with gardens, fruit trees and mountainous open space. Here Mari fell in love with nature and animals. Mari was a learner and a doer, studying ceramics, veterinarian technology, and culinary arts and pursuing careers in as many areas. In the 1980’s Mari completed chef school and spent much of her career as a private chef and caterer, but she always had a passion for animals. She had a knack for saving neighborhood birds with broken wings and other injured wildlife, and was often seen walking one of the many dogs she loved during her lifetime. Mari loved to be near the water, and travelling also made her feel young and alive - visiting Mexico, Canada, and Italy to explore her cultural roots. With her partner Ginny and their dog Mali, she traveled to Camp Douglas in Ontario, Canada for 14 summers and relished “getting back to the basics” in their rustic but charming Lake Matinenda cabin. Mari was a devoted mother to her daughters and doting “nonna” to her grandchildren. Family was her most cherished treasure, and she will be missed by her loving and loyal partner of 21 years Ginny Brush, her two devoted children, Gabriella and Gioia, her dear sisters Carol and Joani, valued son-in-law Mark, treasured nieces Christy, Francesca, and Vanessa, adoring grandchildren Gianna, Cale, Hannah, Davin and Alexandra, and her beloved Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, Mali.
