During March St John’s staff and students, in partnership with Queensland University of Technology, invited students from high schools in the community to a STEM Event. The Event was held in the St John’s Auditorium. It welcomed over 90 high achieving Year 10 and 11 students. The students were able to experience some of the challenges engineers face in their work and to hear from the Director of a top Australian engineering firm. QUT student ambassadors, under the direction of the QUT STIMulate Coordinator Mr Ian Lightbody, conducted interactive workshops for the students. One was the Marshmallow Challenge where teams of students competed to build the highest structure out of spaghetti and string, to support a marshmallow. Another was the LittleBits Electronics workshop where the students were challenged to build an electronic system that is based on an animal adaptation in nature, then present their ideas to the rest of the workshop. There were several imaginative creations based on rattlesnakes and fireflies.

St John’s staff and students were extremely excited to share this opportunity with other students in the community and student visitors were very positive with their feedback after their St John’s STEM experience. In other exciting news, three Year 10 St John’s science students have won a competition through the Conrad Foundation which has now extended an invitation to participate in an additional competition at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA. The students will be able to further develop their winning entry (an environmentally friendly insect deterrent to protect crops) with leading engineers, scientists and business leaders. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to extend their critical thinking skills. This competition is partnered with NASA and Lockheed Martin, and promotes creative solutions to world problems. We wish the team success in the United States! To find out how a St John’s education will take your child into the future, please contact our Registrar, Janette Collins email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au Kind regards Suzanne Bain Head, St John’s Anglican College

Guest Speaker at the Event, Mr Peter Nikoloff, Executive Director of Nova Systems, spoke about the amazing opportunities for Science and Engineering graduates in the Defence Industry in Australia. Mr Nikoloff and his team set up an interactive display featuring the latest in Virtual Reality technology simulating flying an aircraft.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis I’ve been thinking a lot about noise lately. Noise has the ability to calm by way of relaxing music or a soothing voice; it can startle eg a loud unexpected bang; it can irritate like a barking dog or dripping tap. Our relationship with noise is dependent on our mood usually. I have memories of my mother saying, usually towards the end of the long Christmas school holidays, that she just needed some ‘quiet’, and now I find myself saying a similar thing! It was interesting to note that the dictionary definition of noise included this: Informal. extraneous, irrelevant, or meaningless facts, information, statistics, etc. There is so much more of this type of noise these days, isn’t there? I find increasingly that when I feel I need some quiet, I’m hankering to escape the ‘noise’ of the world; to take myself off where there is no internet connection and no traffic or people. We are bombarded with noise now. Our inboxes are filled with ‘noise’ - extraneous, irrelevant, meaningless facts and information. Our social media sites, as well as giving us updates on our friends, also deals out an unhealthy amount of noise. And, for me, anyway, that noise can be so loud that it drowns out the noise we do want to hear. We get so used to the white noise filling our heads that we miss out on other important sounds. We miss the sound of a friend, desperate for connection because we end up skimming our facebook newsfeed due to all the other noise. We miss the sound of our children, begging us to play, to notice them, to really see them, in the midst of our phones pinging and beeping with emails and text messages. And we miss the sound of our own souls screaming for attention in a world noisy with spiritual options, self-help mantras and conflicting dogma. We are so overcome with noise that we miss the most important sounds of all. It’s a challenge to listen when so much noise surrounds us. It’s hard to decipher the sounds we should listen to and the sounds we should ignore. But, it is possible. It just may take some decision making, followed up with some discipline. At the beginning of the year, I ‘unsubscribed’ from many newsletters, blogs and websites. There was nothing wrong, per se, with those things, it was simply too much noise. And you know what, I haven’t missed them! Not one bit. In fact, it’s been quite the opposite. I can feel myself mentally exhaling in relief that my inbox is now uncluttered and ‘less’ than it used to be. And that’s just a start. I’ve been paring down in other ways too - picking my phone up less, turning the TV on less, checking facebook less. As a result, I’m thinking more, connecting more, reading more enjoying more! That old maxim really is true - less is more. Is there too much noise in your life? What sounds are you missing out on because of it? Maybe it’s time to start tuning in to what really matters and tuning out the rest.

Letters & feedback are always welcome email Susannah Friis at: editor@LNP.net.au or leave a comment on her blog at susannahfriis.com

A statue of Simpson and his donkey to be enshrined in the Centenary suburbs A statue of the legendary ‘Simpson and his Donkey’ will be enshrined at the Centenary Suburbs War Memorial Gardens to commemorate The Centenary of ANZAC. Under the Federal Governments ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program, the Centenary Suburbs RSL Sub Branch has been successful in their application for a grant of $45,000 to supplement the funding of a commemorative project. This grant has allowed work to commence in sculpturing a statue of Simpson and his donkey which will be unveiled at the Memorial Gardens on 25th April. The Centenary Sub Branch, whose only income is through the sale of ANZAC and Remembrance Day memorabilia, of which a high percentage goes to the welfare of the old diggers, will contribute to the total cost of the memorial. A Sydney company, Everlon Bronze will design and build the Mr Andy Andrew of Middle Park and a member of the statue and True Memories, of Oxenford, Queensland, will install it of the Centenary RSL, is project manager overseeing when completed. This statue will be the only memorial of its kind the artwork development and installation of the statue at in Queensland reflecting the legend of Simpson and his donkey. Centenary Memorial Gardens. Private Simpson landed on Gallipoli with the covering force at dawn on the 25th April 1915. He quickly befriended a donkey, (called ‘Abdul’ or ‘Murphy’ but usually ‘Duffy’) to carry leg wound casualties to the dressing station. Day and night he worked cheerfully and unconcernedly amid fierce shrapnel and rifle fire, carrying the wounded from the head of Monash valley down Shrapnel gully to the beach. So valued was his work, he was allowed to operate separately, camping with his donkey at the Indian mule-camp. He was known to his fellow diggers as Murphy, Scotty, Simmo, or simply ‘the bloke with the donk’. His name immediately became a byword for courage: The Indian troops called him Bahadur – Bravest of the Brave. Just 25 days after landing on Gallipoli, his inspirational work came to an end; he was shot through the heart in Monash valley and buried on the beach at Hell Spit. Simpson and his Donkey became a legend – a symbol of the ANZACs.

Actions speak louder than words There’s nothing quite like backing up your words with actions, and that’s just what local resident and Girls’ Brigade leader, Melinda Denner, did by participating in this years World’s Greatest Shave event in March. Thirty-seven year old Melinda joined Girls’ Brigade when she was six years old, and became a leader on finishing grade 12 and, aside from some time off to have her own children, has been a leader ever since. One focus of Girls’ Brigade is to encourage community service, so when Melinda signed up for the shave, the girls were keen to participate, with some even being the ones to actually shave her head. “I decided to do the World’s Greatest Shave as my uncle died from Leukaemia and my husband’s work mate’s son was diagnosed with Leukaemia last year,” said Melinda. “I have coloured it in previous years to raise money but decided this year was the year to shave and set a high goal. I was aiming to raise $1000 but I have exceeded that and raised around $1300. I am still trying to get more sponsors, so if you feel like making a difference, go online and make a donation.” The shave took place during the regular Girls Brigade meeting with names pulled out of a hat to see who would be the ones to hold the clippers, with Melinda’s sister Catherine, putting the finishing touches on by shaving the final sections of hair. Girls’ Brigade is a relationship building youth organisation where girls aged five to 21 come together to learn new skills, enjoy activities and events, and build friendships. Girls’ Brigade is a uniformed organisation which helps promote pride and a sense of belonging amongst the girls, and each group or ‘Company’ operates under the leadership of the local church. A typical night at Girls’ Brigade involves up to two hours of fun and games, craft and activities, bibles stories and relevant discussions, and much laughter and chatter. Girls have the opportunity to meet and mix with girls from other Girls’ Brigade Companies and participate in camps, community service activities and special events. To make a donation to Melinda’s fundraising for the World’s Greatest Shave, go to www.worldsgreatestshave.com. If you would like to find out more about Girls’ Brigade in your local area, contact the Girls’ Brigade Queensland State Office on 3849 4129 or send an email to qldadmin@girlsbrigadeaustralia.org.au. (L-R) Tenuri Nettikumara (Yr 5), Daniela Campos Ibarra (Yr 1), Karli Ebersohn (Yr 5), Bridie Ellice (Yr 3), Hannah Clow (Yr 5), Maddie Ellice (Yr 5), Kayla Malherbe (Yr 6) and Claire Cadman (Yr 5) For 10 year old Westlake resident, Maddie Ellice, watching TV turned out to be an inspiration instead of the time-waster it’s usually labelled. Maddie and her dad were watching a show about the Wigs for Kids program when her dad quipped that she could do something similar. And that was all Maddie needed to put the idea into action. A student of Good News Lutheran, Maddie approached Deputy Principal, Peita Frew with the idea of starting a Club for girls to cut their hair and donate it to Wigs for Kids. “We encourage students to come up with ideas and be active in making them a reality, said Ms Frew. “The Clubs in our school are all student led and meet each week. Maddie started the Cut-a-Thon club last year, where each girl participating committed to growing their hair until September this year, with the view to hold an event at the school’s annual Book Fair. Maddie’s mum Jane said the school’s support has been invaluable. “One thing we absolutely love about Good News Lutheran is their commitment to teaching the kids about the importance of ‘service to’, and ‘giving back to’ the community, she said. “We’re just so proud of Maddie and the other students who have joined her in helping other kids this way. “Maddie’s aim is to try and have at least one girl from each class nominating to donate their hair, so she has organised a little competition to encourage participation. For each girl who donates their hair, their name will be put in a hat and if their name is pulled out, their whole class will win an iceblock. “Of course, Mums, other family members and school staff are also encouraged to put their name down to donate their hair as well. We’re also on the look-out for several local hairdressers who might be able to donate their time, as the hair does need to be cut a certain way to make it usable for a wig. Students who are interested in donating their hair can register their name at the Tuesday Cut-a-Thon Club meetings. The hair needs to be at least 30 centimetres long when tied in a low ponytail at the nape of the neck in order to qualify. Information about the Wigs For Kids program can be found on the Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation website www.aaaf.org.au. Any hairdressers interested in donating their time in September can ring Deputy Principal Peita Frew on 3373 4400 or send an email to peita.frew@goodnews.qld.edu.au.

CE CENTENARY

National Seniors

Update by Marlene Worthington, Branch President

At our March General Meeting, we celebrated our 25th Birthday as Centenary National Seniors with a special ‘High Tea’ served to 110 people at the Jindalee Bowls Club by Carol and her helpers. Thank you Carol for such a wonderful repast. We had four ladies: Dulcie, Sylvia, Babs and Elva who have been attending our monthly Meetings since 7th March 1990, cut the enormous cake which was then eaten by the members. This was followed by our entertainer, Bill Henderson with a lively concert. Four new people joined up with us as well as others who came to look us over and see what we do that attracts so many new faces. Thanks to Centenary News, we have received many phone calls enquiring about membership and the many activities our Club provides throughout the year, and it’s really surprising how many older people (over 50’s) are still interested in our Club especially as we are being encouraged by the Government to continue working. We work through this concept by offering many activities which are run both day and evenings. Our next General meeting will be held on 7th April at the Jindalee Bowls Club commencing at 9.30am when we will hold our Annual ‘Bring and Buy’ sale. We invite you to come and meet your friends and enjoy a pleasant, relaxed morning with us. Alan Worthington will be giving us a presentation of his pictures travelling through the Simpson Desert, Darling River Run and Maralinga on a four wheel drive tag-a-long trip. Then you can have the opportunity to win a prize in our monthly raffle. Last month we followed the Cobb & Co Mail Route to Toowoomba (via a more modern coach), had lunch at the Cobb & Co Museum and looked through the Museum trying out all the activities they have there. It was a great day. For our April Explorer trip we are using public transport to Southbank and looking over the State Library (maybe the Museum as well if we have time). Our ‘Steady Steppers’ are feeling and looking very fit. Classes are held every Monday morning, 9am at the Centenary Uniting Church Hall, Middle Park. Everyone is welcome! We have Morning Teas, Evening Dinners, Plays, Concerts, Trivia, and of course our ‘Brain teaser’ game of MahJong is held at the Mt Ommaney Library on the first two Thursdays each month from 9am to noon. If you can think of a new activity, we are happy to give it a go. Whilst we are over 50’s in age, we’re certainly not in health and mind. So, don’t miss out on all this fun of being able to meet other kindred people and make new friends – all at the same time! For more details, please call me on 3279 1444.

Centenary Suburbs . Historical Society UPDATE BY CAROLINE HAMILTON, PRESIDENT

‘Centenary of ANZAC’ Poppy Project The Poppy Project for the commemoration of the ‘Centenary of ANZAC’ in the Centenary suburbs supported by Councillor Matthew Bourke, Jamboree Ward, the Centenary Suburbs RSL Sub-Branch and with the skill of the members of the Men’s Shed 100, has resulted in the construction of a large three dimensional ‘C’. Since September 2014, members of the community have been busy with their hooks and needles to crochet and knit poppies, as well as making fabric poppies to completely cover the structure. There has been wonderful community participation and the goal of 1500 poppies will be easily reached. I am sure all will be impressed with the poppy-covered ‘C’ when displayed at the ANZAC Day ceremony at the Centenary Suburbs War Memorial Gardens on April 25th. The five young men from this district who served in World War I - from the Sinnamon, Crookston and Sorensen families - will have poppies attached to the ‘C’ in recognition of their service. The ‘C’ is located in the Jamboree Ward Office, Mt. Ommaney Shopping Centre, Dandenong Road, Mt. Ommaney. Members of the public are now invited to visit the Jamboree Ward office to dedicate a poppy to remember those who served in any of Australia’s conflicts. The Jamboree Ward Office is open from 9am - 5pm week days. Dedication of a poppy is by gold coin donation - all money raised will be divided equally between the RSL and Legacy to continue their support of service personnel and their families. Macfarlane Street Markets on again Four local Middle Park community groups are combining to present the Macfarlane Street Markets on Saturday 28 March from 8.00 am to noon. In a combined program the St. Catherine’s Anglican Ladies Fellowship are running a Babies and Kids Market selling clothes, toys, books, and children’s furniture, the Salvation Army across the road from St. Catherine’s are running their popular Car Boot Sale at the same times. The two sponsors will be joined by the local Girl Guides group having a Cake Stall on the morning at St. Catherine’s with much to tempt the taste buds; plus a stall by the Middle Park School P&C. Ladies Fellowship President Louise Waterhouse said they were excited to be working in conjunction with the Salvation Army, the Girl Guides and Middle Park School P&C - a sentiment which was shared by Salvation Army Car Boot Sale co-ordinator Jo Woolston. Macfarlane Street at Middle Park will come alive with activity on the morning, including morning teas with pikelets and cream, a sausage sizzle and cooling snow cones, all providing lots of fun for those attending and great bargains to be had by the local Centenary Suburbs community residents. St. Catherine’s Anglican Ladies Fellowship Treasurer Rhonda Harper said they would be making a donation on this occasion to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, a very worthy charity founded by the renowned Dr. Charlie Teo. The focus is specifically aimed at Childhood Brain Tumours. The Salvation Army will use their proceeds in their community work, while the Girl Guides and P&C will use their fundraising to ensure their activities can continue. St. Catherine’s Rector Rev. Tania Eichler said she was very pleased and excited to see the four groups co-operating to reach out to the Centenary suburbs, ensuring a strong local community that is supportive of local residents. Anyone interested in booking a table at St. Catherine’s can contact Laurel Procter on 0438 041 149 or Louise Waterhouse on 3376 3461 and if interested in a Car Boot spot at the Salvation Army please contact Jo Woolston on 3376 4553.

Death by chocolate Chocolate can be a killer to dogs. With Easter coming, it’s possible that your Easter Egg hunt may be followed by a visit to the after hours vet! What is chocolate toxicosis? There are two different chemicals in chocolate that are harmful to dogs, theobromine and caffeine. These both act to stimulate activity in the heart and brain, as well as decrease the blood supply to the brain. This can lead to hyperactivity, vomiting and diarrhoea, irregular heartbeat and seizures. Advanced cases can lead to death 12-36 hours after ingestion. My dog would never do that! Chocolates are a very palatable and attractive alternative to dog food, and are often left lying around unprotected in kitchens and lounge rooms. Dogs most at risk are indoor dogs and dogs at holiday time. This is because of their close proximity to the chocolate. Puppies and young dogs are more likely to eat large amounts of unusual foods, and so chocolates become a great source of temptation. Just remember dogs have an extremely good sense of smell and could find things in really good hiding spots! How much is too much? The amount of danger depends on the type of product. Listed in increasing order of harmfulness are white chocolate, hot choc drinks, milk choc, with cooking chocolate being the most deadly; 450g milk chocolate or 125g of cooking chocolate may kill a seven kilogram dog. In short, if your dog has eaten chocolate – no matter the dose or type, see your vet. Try to take some of the vomit with you. If the chocolate has only recently been ingested the vet may give a needle to make your dog throw up. Your dog may need to be hospitalised on a drip and other medication for a day or two and may need blood and urine tests. Severe cases where a dog is fitting may need anticonvulsant medication. What about doggy chocs? Carob based choc drops are safe for dogs. Always check the ingredients of suspect doggy chocs. Some dog choc-chip biscuits use real chocolate, which may be dangerous if a small dog was to eat the whole box. Of course, avoid the temptation to give human choc drops as treats, and your dog will stay happy and healthy this Easter!

State Member for Mt Ommaney

It is great to be back and down to work as the State MP for Mount Ommaney. The opportunity to serve the Mount Ommaney community for a further term as your State Member of Parliament is a real privilege, and I would like take this opportunity to thank the people of Mount Ommaney for the trust they have placed in me. Easter School Holidays Easter school holidays are almost here, and with school holidays many head off for a short break with the kids. I encourage everyone to stay safe on the roads while travelling, and remember the Fatal Five; Speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, driving while fatigued and inattention. Even on local streets with children out and about, be extra vigilant. Centenary of the ANZAC’s Coming into April, we turn our mind to ANZAC Day. This year marks 100 years since the landing in Galipolli. Year after year, crowds at local services in Corinda, Centenary and Oxley are swelling. It’s great to see so many people turning out to honour our past and current service men and women, and this year I’m expecting record numbers. Local service times can be found on my website www.tarnyasmith.com To mark the ANZAC Centenary, local schools are taking part in a joint project to commemorate the ANZAC Centenary in our local community. Elements of the project include: • A planned gala performance at Brisbane city hall in July with over 600 students and an audience of over 1500 people; • The creation of an iBook commemorating local service men and women; • Mosaic Art Plinths developed and constructed by each school in the Centenary suburbs; • Special ANZAC memorial services at each school; • Major participation by students in RSL commemorative ANZAC Day services, and • The production of special local video documentary for broadcast and to hold in the national archives. If you want any further information about the project, or can offer any assistance please contact: askaboutanzac@gmail.com or 0412 219 690.
