with Susannah Friis I recently visited an elderly relative of mine who, after we had hugged on my arrival, commented on how good it was to be hugged. She has been living on her own since her husband passed away a few years ago and although she is in a retirement village with lots of friends and is regularly visited by other family members, a daily hug is not something that happens for her. I try to make a point of giving big hugs during hello’s and goodbye’s for anyone I know who lives on their own because I know how important it is to our overall health and well-being. The scientific benefits of hugging have long been documented and I think there would be few of us who didn’t recognise the necessity of appropriate and meaningful human touch. We are a very ‘huggy’ family and one daughter in particular asks for more than her fair share of hugs on a daily basis and she is never denied her request! *Disclaimer - hugs have been denied her on occasion during summer when it’s over 40 degrees and touching another human being is just not in anyone’s best interests. One of the main things hugging and physical contact do is give us a feeling of connectedness to the other person. Feeling connected tells us we are understood, that others identify with us - basically, that we are not alone. Even if it’s simply taking someone’s hand as they share a deep hurt or difficult situation they are facing, holding their hand says “I’m with you in this. Physical contact anchors us. It can break through sadness, despair and even anger and frustration. Some of the most meaningful communication I’ve ever had with another person has been simply through holding their hand, no words even needed. Who hasn’t felt the comfort that comes from holding someone’s hand in a scary, stressful or distressing situation? It’s a simple gesture that holds such power. Sadly but not without good reason, physical touch has had to be limited and restricted in our society these days. And I wonder if it’s adding to the increasing rate of depression and dissatisfaction many now experience. Between our online interactions and the growing reticence towards physical contact, the benefits of human touch are being lost. Touching activates the part of our brain linked to compassion and trust and also releases oxytocin which makes us feel warmly disposed to the person. We miss out on all of that when the only contact we have is digital - even great advances in technology like facetime and the like can’t reproduce the physical and chemical changes in our bodies that human touch produces. We are yet to create technology that can replace everything that the physical presence of another human being brings to our lives. In short, we need each other. And we need each other in a real and present way. Why not make intentional physical contact with your friends and family? Maybe instead of worrying about what to say to that friend in need, we need to concentrate on hugging them tightly, taking their hand and letting their amazing human body do the rest.

Lendlease Retirement Living village, The Terraces at Forest Lake is experiencing further success with their Community Connect program. The initiative aims at connecting Lendlease Retirement Living villages with their surrounding communities, whilst enabling potential future residents easy, simple and fun access to the information they seek. Thanks to connections made through the program, The Terraces is contributing to a fabulous cause that is giving back to the community. Pillow Cases for Oncology Kids (P4OK) is a program that gives a unique, handmade pillow case to every child in hospital with cancer. Their pillow cases aim at being a comfort at such a challenging time. Young siblings of each patient also receive pillowcases as P4OK realise the diagnosis and treatment of cancer impacts entire families. P4OK registered with The Terraces’ Community Connect program to help fund their cause and bring awareness to it. They also saw an excellent opportunity to be able to make

information about village life more readily available to their interested members. The program itself involves local organisations, like P4OK, inviting fifteen or more members to events at The Terraces. If the invitees attend, the organisation receives a $500 gift of gratitude for their participation. General Manager for Lendlease Retirement Living Queensland, Ann Holzer, says, “Our association with P4OK is a shining example of just how valuable these relationships and the Community Connect program are. It allows us to contribute to a genuinely worthy cause while communicating important information to our potential future residents.” Una Gray, resident of The Terraces, joined P4OK in 2008, when an acquaintance’s baby was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Una says, “We have now made more than 2,000 pillowcases - 631 in the last Financial Year alone.” P4OK aims to exceed that total this Financial Year.

Members of P4OK see great value in Lendlease’s Community Connect initiative and are grateful for their financial contribution. Along with their funding from Forest Lake One Community Heritage Bank, Lendlease’s gift is helping to pay for material, thread, needles and other supplies. Much deliberation accompanies the decision to move into a retirement village. The Community Connect program gives a unique insight into life at The Terraces. With a vibrant community, tropical setting, fabulous amenities and the convenience of inner city living it’s easy to see why current residents love living there. To find out more about The Terraces at Forest Lake including the Community Connect program, please call Lynette Marsh, Sales Manager on 0477 806 781.

WE ARE HERE TO O SUPPOR RT OUR COM MMUNITTY The Terraces at Forest Lake wants to reward your local club with $500* Are you a member of a local sporting club or community group? Overseas opportunity for young Forest Lake Futsal players For local brothers 14 year old Aidan and 15 year old Lachlan, supporting one another and celebrating each others success is as important as the success itself. With both boys qualifying and being chosen for the Australian Futsal Team, they couldn’t be happier. The boys started playing soccer at ages two and three with the Lions Squirts program as well as participating in other council and community based programs and started playing club soccer when each boy was six at Brisbane Force (now call Phoenix). The Brisbane Lions is now their soccer home as they enter their seventh year with the club and have also been at the Oxley Futsal club the same amount of time. “Each year players from their futsal club are selected to represent their District, in our case West Moreton Warriors, at Regional Titles, which are played for three days over the Easter long weekend,” said proud mum Tamara. “From there they are identified for possible selection to play at the National Titles in Sydney in early January. Those identified attend a further trial process over a few weekends, and are selected for the teams to play at Nationals. Lachlan has played for three consecutive years, and this was Aidan’s first year playing in Sydney.” The costs involved in both boys making the Australian Futsal Team is an obstacle single mum Tamara is determined to overcome. “I’m a single mum of three kids, working full time, and would love more than anything to give my boys this experience. They have worked so incredibly hard over many years now, and absolutely deserve this opportunity. I am not someone who finds it easy to ask for help in any way but for my boys I am willing to swallow my pride and do whatever I can to make this happen for them.” For Aidan, the trip will be to the UK in October and for Lachlan, Brazil in November. “The trip will cost $8000 each for the boys and a further $8000 for me to accompany them, which I would really love to do,” said Tamara. “The thought of sending my boys halfway around the world without me is a bit scary!” With the boys training for the National team as well as club futsal, club soccer and their school teams, the weeks are busy for Tamara who also works full time to support the family. “They have been so supportive of each other through this and it’s been lovely to see how excited they have been for each other being selected. Even their little sister is excited and trying to think of ways we can save money and fundraise!” If you’d like to help Tamara fund Aidan and Lachlan’s overseas opportunities, contact her by calling 0412 886 657 or go to the GoFundMe website and search for Suitor Boys Australian Futsal Team.

Well, we can’t believe February is over and with it, our signature event, Come ‘n Try Day, as well as a whole host of other sign on opportunities! Our Come ‘n Try Day always seems to be on the hottest day of the year but it does not deter those keen to give rugby union a crack. This year, thanks to a Get Going grant from the State Government, we were able to increase our promotions as well as our attractions, making it a fun day for all, including our special guests Cr Charles Strunk and Happy from St George. We have also had our brand new seniors team start and our U10s did that very early, setting the tone with their trademark enthusiasm. We also enjoyed being part of the first Forest Lake Community Markets for the year and meeting new families. Though training has commenced for all teams now from U6 – U10 and also our senior men, it is not too late to sign up and be part of our great family club. Also thanks to the State Government’s Get Going grant, we are able to offer free two week trials this season, that are rebated back to you after registration. This is a great opportunity to get a real taste of what it is to be part of your team, get to know your coach and the other wonderful people we have at the WASPs. We are especially keen to have more girls join in. However, you must be registered to train. Registrations have been open since January and will remain open until games get under way after Easter. Visit our website www.forestlakewasps.com.au for the link and details - all registrations are online. Please visit our Facebook page ‘The WASPs: Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club’ or contact President Vanessa Poskus via vlposkus@gmail.com or 0412 560 143 for details. Get your boots on and join the great game of rugby union at your local club - the Wasps!

In great news for our junior rugby league players, the Forest Lake Junior Rugby League Football Club has received $35,000 in funding from the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF). This fund helps sporting clubs and community-based organisations purchase equipment and upgrade their facilities and services. The Forest Lake Magpies will benefit from the installation of a PA system, as well as seating. I join players, families and supporters in welcoming these new additions to their club – and I look forward to seeing (and hearing) the completed works. Our local ANNELIE HUGHES clubs contribute so much to our community and it’s great the GCBF can support them MCouns QCA (Clinical) PACFA Reg. ARCAP Reg. ACA (Level 4) to fund projects that may have otherwise been out of reach. PH: 3278 9625 or 0409 789 625 I encourage local organisations to find out more about the GCBF and apply for funding online. Visit http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/corporate/sponsorships-and-grants/grants. I was delighted to hear the first Forest Lake Community Markets of 2018 were a Annastacia success. It was a real treat for my office to participate once again and thank you to all MP the residents for your support last year. Thank you especially to Kylie and Robyn and Member the team of volunteers for all your hard work. The next markets will be held on March for Inala 18th from 8am – noon at Forest Lake State High School, High Street Forest Lake. PO Box 75 St John’s Anglican College has received almost $5,000 from the Queensland Inala 4077 Government’s State Capital Assistance Scheme. This scheme assists eligible non-state schools to upgrade or convert existing educational facilities. The funding for St John’s College will be used to assist with charges relating to a development permit for their MAST building. One of my favourite annual local events is the Queensland Day Awards. It is always a pleasure to recognise the wonderful work of our local community champions and unsung heroes. I am proud to announce that South West Progress Association will be facilitating this Phone: 3737 2100 wonderful community event in 2018. Finance Corner

WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

Although the situation in world share markets changes daily, at the time of writing this article amongst the most significant news in the financial world is that the share market in America (and consequently the rest of the world) has had a ‘wobble’, or in investment speak, has undergone an inevitable ‘correction’. (As I indicated in a previous article, I have just retired after 39 years...how dare they do this in my last week of full time employment when I want to access my super!) February 8th saw the second drop of over 1,000 points within the week, which in turn resulted in an overall 10% decline below record highs which were achieved in January. Sure, that does represent a significant decline, and it is normally that statistic which makes the news. What is often forgotten is the rise in the share market over several years. By way of example, suppose a particular market had risen 60% over a period of 5 years. On a compound growth basis, that equates to an average of around 0.8% per month. Most people would turn off if the news headlines at the end of the month stated that markets had risen by almost 1% for the month...boring! Just as the tide comes in and goes out, so too will share markets rise and fall. The problem, if anything, is that they comply with the principle of going up on the escalator but coming down in the elevator. Corrections are normal but history has shown that so too are reasonable gains if one’s time horizon for investing is in turn reasonable. Conversely, if you want to appreciate the gains, you also need to be resilient enough to accept that from time to time there will be a little pain along the way. Of course, ultimately it is one’s investment and risk profile that should dictate the avenues of investment, as well as the time horizon involved. Whilst most will appreciate the longer term gains that the share market may offer, it certainly won’t fit with someone who wants to always sleep peacefully at night and is very much risk averse. Of course, that is something that each individual must take into consideration.

FROM THE DESK OF

Councillor Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor

I would like to thank all the residents who supported the Forest Lake Lions at the Forest Lake Community Markets this month. I was delighted I could help with the sausage sizzle that raises funds to is used in local projects and to assist residents. I would strongly recommend anyone looking to volunteer, to contact the Forest Lake Lions or my ward office. Congratulations to Steve Ford, the sub-branch president Bob Richard, secretary of the Forest Lake RSL branch and chairman of the Commemorative Committee, the German Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland patron Dawn Fraser along with members of Dogs Queensland for a moving service for the dedication of the new War and Service Dog Memorial that took place on February 4th. The special unveiling of the war dog memorial statue at the Dogs sporting ground was made extra special by the laying of the wreaths. GSDCQ president Sharon Ballantyne and Dawn Fraser, AO MBE, laid a beautiful wreath on behalf of the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia. We would also like to acknowledge and congratulate past president Rodney Vernon for all his hard work behind the scenes on this project with Dogs Queensland. Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs hold a special place for many residents. I’m pleased as the local councillor to be leading the way and recognising all the animals that to fought alongside our men and women. I would like to thank Forest Lake residents for their patience and for working with my ward office during the savage storm that hit the area in February. I’m pleased to report city council officers and I are working hard to tidy up and keep the area safe. I’m extremely disappointed to report that Brisbane City Council waste vouchers have been delivered to homes missing the photocopy-proof foil. At the start of the 2017-2018 financial year, council distributed vouchers with photocopy-proof foil to stop residents illegally copying them. The cost of this bungle and how many homes have been affected is still unknown. My ward office will continue to help residents who have been issued with these vouchers or anyone who has been affected by the storm. If you need a replacement voucher please contact my office on 3407 1211.

Family Focus

with Mark Mackay

March sees the beginning of Autumn. In some places, the change of season is really stark – the temperature begins to change rapidly and the trees change colour. Not so much in Queensland! Up here, there are really just two seasons – ‘really hot’ and ‘not so hot’. A friend of mine lived for many years in the United States and he tells me how Autumn (or Fall as they call it) was a really important time to acknowledge the change of things. He said the change of seasons actually had an emotional effect and was a prompt for reflection. He said that within the beauty of the fallen leaves was the truth that those leaves were dying and soon the trees would be bare. This reminder is one of which we are in desperate need in the West. We are adept at avoiding any sort of decay or reminder of death but we actually need to be reminded that death is part of life. In the West, we hide decay and death away but most other cultures embrace it and bring it out into the open so the whole community can be supportive of one another. What does this have to do with an article on ‘Family Focus’? I believe the family is the place where this conversation needs to begin. When I was a child, kids were not taken to funerals. They were kept away from them. But that is changing. Kids are now often included in the funeral service itself and that’s a good thing! When we are confronted by death within our family or a friend or even on TV, we are given an opportunity to talk about this important subject and help our kids formulate their attitudes. In our family, an important part of the conversation around life and death is our faith – what was taught and accomplished by Jesus Christ. And so, this year, Easter (the very pinnacle of Christ’s ministry) also falls in March. Perhaps one way you can open the conversation about the bigger questions of life is through connecting with church this Easter. Check this edition of The Lake News for details of the church services this Easter. Home is a place where we should be able to have the important (and deeper) conversations of life. It’s where we say, “It’s okay to question and debate and talk.” It’s where we learn what it looks like to engage those bigger questions and I encourage you to take that opportunity this Easter.

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Alan Greig g

Readers will recall that the RSL Forest Lake Sub-branch dedicated a memorial to animals used in war at the Lakeside Memorial Park on Remembrance Day 2017. A nice story was printed in RSL News Magazine about Digger, a brown and white bulldog who as a stray attached himself to soldiers of the 1st Division on the way down to board a troopship docked in Melbourne. The 1st Division immediately adopted him as their Mascot and so Digger sailed with them on October 14, 1914. Digger devoted himself to Private (later Sergeant) James Harold Martin, then aged 22. Digger served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front in Belgium and France. He went ‘Over the Top’ from the trenches with his human mates some 16 times in some of the worst battles ever fought. He was wounded and gassed in 1916 at Pozieres. Shot in the jaw he lost three teeth, was blinded in the right eye and lost his hearing in the left ear. At the sound of the gas alarm Digger would rush to get his gas mask fitted. There were accounts of how Digger would take food to wounded men stranded in no man’s land and return sometimes with written messages. Martin returned to Australia in May 1918 to be discharged medically unfit. Digger was able to accompany him as strict quarantine regulations for dogs returning from overseas were not in force until one month later. Martin and Digger remained in Sydney and continued to do their bit for the war effort attending ceremonies, marches and functions in Bathurst, Maitland and Sydney. Digger died an old dog on Empire Day (May 24th probably in 1919) when he was frightened by celebratory fireworks and thinking he was under fire again he attempted to jump the fence, failed and fell back with a burst blood vessel. The devoted dog managed to crawl back into the house and died under Martin’s bed.

Forest Lake Magpies Club Update by Communications Officer, Tammy Davis. The Forest Lake Magpies are off to a great start for the upcoming 2018 season in more ways than one. There’s been lots of work getting done around the club, such as cleaning and reorganising the equipment shed as well as purchasing some new equipment. A big ‘spring clean’ of the canteen, kitchen and storage areas as well as lots of reorganising and the installation of a large stainless steel bench/sink in the canteen. We now have a Memorabilia room which displays perpetual trophies/ shields as well as of photos of our earliest teams. Oh how times have changed! We’ve had our sign on day and have started pre season training. So far our member count is coming along very well, we expect to get many more members over the next couple of weeks leading to the start of the season as with every other year. Although, we do have two age groups that still require a few players - our U12’s and U17’s. So if there’s any boys out there who are turning 12 or 17 this year we would love to see you. And anyone else who’s interested in playing of course, come on down, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. We also still need some club committee members and team helpers. Club committee members required are a secretary, a second canteen convenor and some general members. Team helpers needed are coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, league safe officers, touch judges and first aid officers. Now you don’t have to have a child playing for the club to be able to take on any of these positions. Nor do you have to be experienced. Any positions that need any type of qualification will be paid and arranged for by the club. You just need to be someone who’s good with people, have a little spare time and have something to offer the local community. Speaking from experience, it really is very rewarding offering your time to help out not for profit organisations, not to mention the joy it brings you watching children learn new skills, learn how to work as a team and gain confidence in themselves. For more information contact Skip at admin@forestlakeJRLFC,com.au or on 0409 199 437. We look forward to seeing you.

Forest Lake Men’s Shed Update by Steve Bruford - President Our Shed now has 35 financial members and we have been very busy this year so far. The orders for the ‘Connect 4’ games from several local family day care centres have been completed as well as tables for the Forest Lake Community Markets. We have also fixed some furniture items for members of our community. This is what the Men’s Shed is all about. The Forest Lake calendars were very well accepted by our local community. As part of our commitment to our community near and far, we decided to share some of the funds around. So we donated $100 to the McGrath Foundation (Breast Cancer), $100 to the Cancer Council, $100 to the Farmers Buy A Bale and $100 to our own Devicentrix Environmental services who mow the lawns of Disabled and elderly people in our local suburbs, this will enable them to buy supplies to continue their great work. We have been blessed ourselves by our generous community so wanted to share some around. Thank you again to all those locals that bought the calendar and helped us help others. We also have two Bunnings Sausage sizzles each month which helps us raise funds for the future. We have some exciting plans for the future which we are talking to the Salvos about and we hope to be in our shed for a long term future.

A ‘Clean Cut’ approach to painting Forest Lake resident Deon Allen began his new business, Clean Cut Painting, last year after deciding he wanted to bring a more personalised approach to the painting industry. Deon has worked on many different residential and commercial projects in his nine years in the trade and is currently servicing Brisbane’s western suburbs and surrounds. Completing his apprenticeship through All Trades Queensland with training provided by Master Painters Australia, Deon is personally involved in each project from the initial contact, painting works and the final site clean up. “Complete customer satisfaction is my end goal,” said Deon. “Which is why I love being involved in every job from start to finish.” Providing personal service and using only quality products, Deon keeps his prices competitive by deciding to work from his home office to reduce expensive overheads. “By keeping the overheads low, we can pass those savings on to the customer and still maintain a high quality service along with our high quality workmanship. We’ll even beat any written quote from a licenced painter by 5%.” Whether you are after a full repaint or a simple refresh of your home or office, Clean Cut Painting provides exceptional services at great prices and is fully licensed and QBCC approved. FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

In recent times I’ve been approached by victims, families and groups who are suffering due to the growing issue of pay day lenders. The number of households that are financially distressed has doubled in the past decade to now sit at 1.8 million. This has forced over 650,000 families throughout Australia to turn to pay day lending and consumer leases just to get by. In return they are paying interest rates as high as 884% for household goods like fridges and washing machines which would normally cost $350 but end up costing consumers almost $4,000 by loan sharks looking to rip off vulnerable Australian families. Earlier this month we saw the story of a local resident in the Courier Mail. She said after five years of a traumatic debt spiral where she took out hundreds of short term loans and paid tens of thousands of dollars in ridiculous interest rates that she is only now back on her feet. Stories like this are all too common and something must be done. Almost two years ago the Government received a report and recommendations on how to fix this broken system. This includes key recommendations such as placing a total cap on the overall cost for consumer leases and lowering the threshold from 20% to 10% on income expenditure for cash loans. These are just part of the 24 recommendations made by the committee to put in place protections for those at risk of exploitation. The Government has already said it supports the vast majority of the recommendations, in part or in full, so it’s time we saw some action to protect vulnerable Australian families. If you would like to share your story on how you’ve been affected by pay day loans or consumer leases, please send me an email Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au or call my office on 3879 6440.

RICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDATE BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

The Leaders and Youth members at Richlands-Forest Lake Scout Group have certainly thrown themselves into 2018 in a big way. The first weekend of February started with an early morning drive to Samford Valley for an intensive Archery course for our Venturer, Connor. This VET Level 1 course will not only earn Connor his Pursuits award tape, it will also give him a recognised qualification and a new skill to practice. As often as possible, our Leaders try to get our youth out of the den and doing things. The Joey Scouts decided to start the month with a swim at Orion Lagoon for some fun and relaxation. Including physical activity in our program is strongly encouraged and is part of the Aims and Principles of Scouting. Another part of Scouting involves exploring spirituality and developing tolerance for other people’s choices, including other faiths. The Chung Tien Chinese Buddhist Temple hosted a Chinese New Year celebration mid February, and our Joey Scouts, Scouts and Venturers took advantage of this opportunity to explore the beautiful grounds and experience a different culture. This is a beautiful place and they are always very welcoming and happy to educate visitors about their faith. Although the Cub Scouts did not get to join us, they were busy exploring the Southbank Cultural precinct with Cub Scouts from West Centenary Group. Scouting is very much about joining in activities with youth from other groups, both near and far or even with youth from other organisations. Some of our Cub Scouts also took part in one of our Region Cub Scout Leadership courses. These courses are a fun way to start introducing aspects of Leadership and planning at a younger age level. These Cubs will now take on a youth leadership role within their Cub Pack and hopefully extend their skills to the wider community. This weekend past, our Group travelled to Wirraglen Scout Campsite in Toowoomba for our Mad Scientist Camp. Each of our Leaders researched and prepared a fun and exciting, hands on activity representing one of the many fields of Science. Activities included making instant ice, treasure mapping and digging for fossils and we were also entertained by Dr Joe, of Dr Joe’s Science Shows, who engaged the youth in an hour long Motion Madness show. Intellectual development is also an important part of our Scouting philosophy. Many of our youth who struggle with academia in school are able to absorb more from interactive play - learning by doing. Camp is also a brilliant opportunity for our youth members to form lasting bonds and strong emotional attachments. Many friendships formed in Scouting last, not only through Primary school level, but continue well into adulthood. Scouting truly is a world wide family. If you would like to find out more about how you and your child could be involved in Scouting, please contact us via our facebook page - Richlands - Forest Lake Scout Group - or call 0402 308 182 to chat with our Group Leader, Rosella. Forest Lake Area F

Garden Group

by John Prout March, the month named after Mars, the Roman God of War, is an excellent month to wage war on your garden. Be it ripping out the weeds, mulching up a storm, or popping in a plethora of plants, March is the ultimate time to launch a full scale (but well planned) attack on your garden! So, all you weekend warriors...March into action! But back on the home front, March means bright skies, warm days and, as the month progresses, that hint of autumn in the evening air that makes it the weather ideal for gardening. Insect pests are on the prowl in March. They’ve had ample time to build up numbers through the warm weather and there’s a lot of growth around for them to get stuck into. Caterpillars grow ever bigger as they feast on your favourite plants. Buy one of the eco-friendly products to control caterpillars, and also treat smaller sap suckers like aphids and thrips. Alternatively if you have many birds visiting your garden then hopefully they will keep the insect numbers under control. The beginning of March can still be quite hot but get ready for a busy few weeks once the weather cools down. Not only will it be more pleasant to work outside then, but it will be time to plant a wide variety of cool-season vegetables, annual flowers and spring-flowering bulbs. Talking about bulbs, it’s time to plan which bulbs we’ll be planting for summer. If ordering from a catalogue or from the net, ensure the ones you order are suitable for our climate. One does not want to spend money on bulbs that are only suitable for the colder climate. Place the bulbs in the crisper of the fridge until around Easter. Our next bus trip will be on Thursday 12 April when we visit the Madura Tea Plantation and Ross Evens Nursery at Runaway Bay. Lunch will be at Cabarita Beach Bowls Club. Cost is $50 for members and $55 for guests and includes entry to the plantation, lunch and morning tea. For a flyer or further details please contact Margaret on phone 0407 134 412. Covered shoes must be worn for the plantation tour. Our first open garden will be Linda Hore’s garden in Camira on Tuesday 13 March. This is a good opportunity to meet and chat over a cuppa and view her garden. This month’s guest speaker will be Ann Blundell giving us all the inside information on growing plants in pots. Hope to see you at our meeting.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 6 March at 10am. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

Feline Respiratory Disease, also referred to as Cat Flu, is a common disease seen mostly in unvaccinated cats. It can affect cats of all ages but tends to be particularly severe in kittens and purebred cats. Cat Flu is highly contagious and can spread from one feline friend to another via eye, nasal or mouth discharge. Even contaminated food or water bowls can spread the disease. There are several viruses responsible for Cat Flu, most of which we can vaccinate against. However, the majority of cases will be caused by one of two viruses, Feline Herpes Virus 1 (FHV-1) and Feline Calici virus (FCV). The clinical signs of Cat Flu are similar to colds and flu in people with sneezing, coughing, runny eyes, nasal discharge, loss of appetite and tongue ulcers most common. Some cats that are infected with Cat Flu don’t show any clinical signs and are known as ‘carrier cats’. A carrier cat is only infectious to other cats when they are shedding the virus, which may be continuous or intermittent, and occurs particularly when the carriers are stressed. Nothing can be done to change the carrier status of cats. All cats that have had Cat Flu should be considered potential carriers. Diagnosis is usually based on the clinical signs and physical examination. Occasionally a mouth swab may be taken for viral culture and sent off to a laboratory for identification and confirmation. The treatment of Cat Flu can vary depending on the cause but it is largely supportive treatment that includes keeping the nose and eyes clear and clean. Antibiotics are often used to control secondary bacterial infections and medication can be given to reduce swelling and thickness of secretions and help cats breathe easier. Dehydration can occur as the disease worsens, so it is important to encourage eating and drinking. Hospitalisation, close monitoring and intravenous fluids may be required for severely unwell cats. Prevention of Cat Flu can be achieved in most households by vaccination.

A very enjoyable first trip for 2018 for the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club members was to Underwater World Sea Life Aquarium at Mooloolaba. On arrival, everyone enjoyed a wonderful morning tea before wandering off to explore the various displays and take in the fabulous Seal presentation. Free time followed for lunch and a little shopping at the wharf area before heading home. The Clubs ‘Extra Activity’ for February was lunch at the Forest Lake Hotel, and on Sunday 11th February 54 members and friends boarded the Sea Princess in Brisbane for a fabulous and much anticipated 14-day cruise over to New Zealand. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at The Lion, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next three meetings are 16th March (AGM), 20th April and 18th May. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail. com. New members are always welcome.
