ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT

Despite a wet start to the month, our Cub Scouts headed down to the Lake at Forest Lake armed with plastic bags and gloves. Environmental education is one of our main aims, so while doing a good turn in cleaning up around the lake, the Cubs also investigated other issues that can impact on the environment, and what steps we can take to reduce our part in this.

Following on from this, the cubs got their hands dirty making up worm farms and learning about recycling. Of course, there is always time for camping so we headed outdoors (again) with the Scouts for a weekend brushing up on our camping and outdoor survival skills. Some of our cubs also found time to attend a Cub Scout Leadership course during March.

The Scouts focus this month was refreshing our knowledge of hiking and the preparations that take place before we head out. We did a quick refresher on our basic knots and splicing before familiarising the youth with issues around lightweight hiking and temporary overnight campsites.

The Scouts seemed to enjoy this, although not as much as their game time and hot chocolate catch up sessions! Camp is always a favourite activity too. It always gives us a feeling of satisfaction to watch as a group of individual kids form special bonds and start to gel as a team, and we are really starting to see this with our Scouts.

With Harmony Day being celebrated on March 20, all sections spent some time investigating the various cultures in our area and how we all combine to form a unique community. Teaching our youth members about tolerance and equality is part of the process toward becoming Leaders of the future.

The Scout Association has recently undertaken a massive review of our Youth Development Program to see how we can stay current and relevant to youth of today.

One of the recommendations to come out of this was to lower the starting age from six years of age to five years of age for those who turn six by June 30 of that year.

We are so excited to welcome our two newest members, Dakota and Brissa, who were invested into Joey Scouts at our Science camp at the end of February. The Joey Scouts had such a great time at Science camp that they decided to continue with Science to earn their Adventure Challenge Badges. After an afternoon doing colour based science experiments and a morning at The Cube at UQ we have a few upcoming future Scientists in the making. To finish off Term One, the Joeys participated in an afternoon of Easter activities and games before heading in to the school holidays.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Have you ever impatiently told a child to hurry up?

Or noticed that they are running to keep up with you at the shops? Or have you ever had to slow your pace as you walked with an elderly friend or relative and caught yourself becoming frustrated at the time it was taking?

When I look around it seems to me, we are more than ‘busy’ we are rushed, often even frantic. I learnt a lesson many years ago when I was working with children with special needs that I had forgotten until quite recently - the art of going slow.

We blame the ‘world’ or ‘society’ for our level of hurriedness these days, often citing the ‘good ole days’ when the pace was slower, people had time to stop and chat and we had time to read books or simply play with a child not rushed or thinking about the ten other things we ‘should’ be doing. We say these things wistfully as though we have zero control over the pace of our lives.

We give up an awful lot of power to others, don’t we?

We love to think that we are at the mercy of the push and pull of the world. The reality is, we are all in charge of our own pace. Sure, there might be times when it simply has to be faster but generally, we get to decide how busy we are and how fast we go within that busyness. Whenever I am tempted to complain that I have too much study to do, too many assignments to write, I try to remind myself that noone is forcing me to do this degree!

I was walking with someone recently who went at a slow pace out of necessity and so of course, I adjusted my pace to suit. As we walked and chatted, I noticed all sorts of things - the breeze stirring the tops of the trees, the range of different colours in the leaf and bark litter on the path, the small flowers on the weeds growing through the cracks in the concrete. The slower pace also meant that I listened to my companion and really heard her. And even though I had arrived to meet her with a hundred and one things on my mind, I found that after the short walk to our destination, I felt calmer and relaxed.

When we slow down, there’s all sorts of things we discover and not just about our surroundings. When we deliberately slow down, our minds have time to really dwell on things that, otherwise, we wouldn’t properly contemplate. When we’re busy and rushed, thinking can go out the window. How often have you heard or said after an accident or mishap “I just wasn’t thinking�? When we slow down, our brains have time to make measured, considered decisions.

No matter how much we have going on in our lives, how we go about it can make a huge difference. We can choose to be frantic and stressed in the midst of that busyness or we can choose to take a few deep breaths, slow down and set our own pace.

The old adage ‘More haste, less speed’ is a well known saying for a reason. We accomplish far more in our lives if we slow it down, be calm and remain so even if all around us are rushed and frantic. And you never know, you might just start a slow revolution!

Common canine urinary tract problems There are a number of urinary related conditions that can develop in dogs. The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, the ureters, the bladder and the urethras.

Signs can include: more frequent urination, diffi cult urination, straining to urinate, blood in the urine, more urine being produced, urinating in abnormal places and pain on urination.

The most common problems we see in dogs are: Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s) As they are caused by bacteria, they can often be treated quickly and effectively using antibiotics following identification after testing urine.

Bladder Stones (Urolithiasis) There are a variety of types of stones that can develop, each specific type forming under different bladder conditions, and some stones even developing more commonly in certain breeds of dogs. Stones can also form in the kidneys, ureters or urethra with the bladder the most common location. Due to the potential for stones to cause pain, obstruction, irritation, trauma and persistent UTIs, diagnosis, treatment and management are vital.

Bladder cancer (Transitional Cell Carcinoma) A Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC) is a malignant tumour of the bladder. Prognosis depends on the stage of the disease, however as this cancer is malignant, long-term survival does not usually exceed more than 10 months.

Incontinence Urinary incontinence is a relatively common condition seen in older desexed female dogs. Ageing, obesity and reduced sensitivity of the neurologic receptors present around the bladder sphincter are also common contributors to this condition. This condition is often diagnosed after ruling out more serious conditions and can be effectively managed with medicines.

Kidney Infection/Inflammation (Pyelonephritis) Kidney infections develop when bacteria ascend up the bladder via the ureters, into the kidneys. Your dog may get very sick with this disease and have increased urination and drinking, lethargy, go off their food and have vomiting. Blood and urine tests performed will lead to a treatment plan for this condition.

Any change in the way your pet urinates should be checked.

Students who are part of the special education program at Forest Lake State School are enjoying revitalised learning and leisure areas in 2018, thanks to a $4,000 donation from Forest Lake Shopping Centre.

The school used this donation to purchase a range of flexible classroom furniture to enhance the learning environment in their multi-age classrooms, and a portable music system that’s used at lunch times to offer students a new playground activity.

“We now have a colourful, large round rug that’s used for mat and group time activities in the lower primary class.

It provides a designated area that supports the children with developing their skills in sitting in a group situation for a short period,” said Kerry Gair, Deputy Principal at Forest Lake State School.

“We also purchased a range of large, vinyl-covered shapes which can be combined to provide seating or used for construction and play tasks – this equipment has been immensely popular with the children.” “The portable music system has also been well received by our students. They’re enjoying getting their groove on, creating their own dance moves, and playing a variety of music-based games. The arts are embedded in our curriculum and it has been a great opportunity for students to build on their dance lessons,” says Nick Marrinan, Assistant Deputy Principal at Forest Lake State School.

As part of its commitment to helping the community thrive, Forest Lake Shopping Centre has made donations of more than $12,000 to worthwhile local causes as part of their Big Hearts campaign.

“Our Big Hearts campaign is a tangible way for us to give back to our local community,” says Forest Lake Shopping Centre Marketing Manager, Linda Loosley.

“We’re on track to give away $20,000 to support local projects and causes by the end of the financial year.”

StandBy - Support After Suicide is pleased to announce the launch of its new website, www.standbysupport.com.au, providing a greater online presence for Australia’s largest suicide postvention program.

Suicide impacts everyone. For every Australian that takes their own life, more than 100 Australians are impacted. That’s 250,000 Australians closely impacted each and every year.

CEO Christopher John highlighted the devastating impact suicide can have and the importance of postvention support for those left behind, “Losing someone to suicide has a devastating impact on family members and friends, and can extend into the workplace, school or social group. We know those affected can face challenges connecting to those around them and are at an increased risk of mental health concerns and suicide themselves, but with appropriate and timely assistance StandBy can help them navigate support and manage their grief,” said Christopher.

National Operations Manager Geoff Timm said the website would not only help raise awareness of suicide bereavement and the support available through the program but also provide valuable resources to those looking for support online.

“The website is an integral part to our wider vision to ensure every Australian impacted by suicide can access the support they need. Anyone can visit the site and search by region to connect with a dedicated StandBy team member in their area who will coordinate the various support they may need, including free telephone or face-to-face support.

“If you, or someone you know, has been affected by suicide, we encourage you to visit the website to find out more about the StandBy program and how it can help you or your local community,” said Geoff.

The website includes a set of comprehensive resources assisting those looking for self-help or to support someone they may know bereaved by suicide, including a series of Support Pack information sheets, suggested reading and links to other relevant support services.

Annually the StandBy program responds to over 2,500 enquiries and provides community education workshops to over 2000 participants. The program currently reaches onethird of the population across ten regional sites. Its mission is to ensure all Australians have access to support and is working to secure expanded and ongoing funding to become a fully national program.

Wasps Monthly Update

Thanks to the Get Going grant that the Wasps secured for 2018, we have 50 free trials on offer. There is still time to get amongst the rugby action down at the Sports Fields no matter your age, background or experience. You can run around at training with the teams and get a feel for rugby union.

Local grassroots clubs are a rarity these days and Forest Lake is lucky to have ours with such a dedicated coaching team. If you want to take advantage of this trial or register for the season, you can come down to one of our weekly training sessions after the Easter break: Tuesdays 5-6pm for U8/9/10s and Thursdays 4.30pm for U6/7s and 5pm for the older age groups.

We are very excited to have our senior men up and running, with their first game in the Scotney Cup played last month and a Family Day to launch their Home season on 7th April at 3pm down at the Fields. Martin Amosa, from Hosanna church, has been extremely dedicated in making this dream happen and it is a great thing for us as a club to see the big boys come down to training. It is wonderful for our juniors to look up to them and is a significant milestone in growth for our club. We continue to welcome new hirers and users to our club, with the Nepalese Community Soccer club, PEPT Forest Lake and Archery Adventure all joining us this season. Being, essentially, the onsite managers for the Sports Fields keeps us very busy! To maintain the venue for the benefit of the community, providing opportunity for access and yet also supporting our members who largely fund it, is not an easy balance to strike.

When we include any club, organisation or event, it can be hard to juggle all we have to consider: that the use of the Fields remains shared and in such a way that is fair to all; compliance requirements of our landlord BCC; fulfilment of our lease obligations, including the availability and capacity of our volunteers to do so; the needs of our local residents, particularly in regards to parking; and the safe and secure operation of our sport for our members (who are, of course, mainly children). People are often surprised, when they hire from us, to find out how much we are responsible for. Without the sacrificial commitment of our few volunteers and the support and understanding of the community, we most definitely could not do it – and then everyone would miss out! So make sure you come down and get behind our new senior team, help us out by volunteering or sponsoring or sign up for a free trial. Any and all can find their place at the Wasps and we look forward to continuing to serve our community.

March was a jam-packed month with so many local events and Brisbane City Council projects under way! Here are few of the highlights for this month.

Walk and Coffee with a Cop by Inala Police Station and Centenary Crime Prevention Unit A great time was had by all at the first Walk and Coffee With A Cop for 2018 in Forest Lake, proudly supported by the local team from all levels of Government, Milton Dick MP Federal Member for Oxley and Annastacia Palaszczuk MP State Member for Inala. It’s incredibly rewarding as the local councillor to be afforded the opportunity to support this work with our local police in bringing this fantastic event to Forest Lake.

It was an opportunity for residents to speak one-on-one to an officer about their concerns with regards to public safety and other matters.

A special thank you to Officer in Charge of Inala Police Division, Senior-Sergeant Craig Mackenzie, for making time to walk around with his team to identify black spots and address local concerns. I hope anyone who missed out contacts my office if they have any questions.

Forest Lake Markets – Helping at the Forest Lake Lions Stall on the BBQ The Forest Lake Community Markets continue to grow from strength to strength each month. I would like to thank all the residents who came by the Lions stall and bought food and drinks. All the money raised at the sausage sizzle goes towards worthwhile local projects and to assist residents who seek support. Anyone looking to volunteer is encouraged to contact the Forest Lake Lions or my ward office, as we can always do with a bit more help.

Litter Pick-up at Forest Lake Many thanks all the volunteers and my staff for working hard at the Forest Lake ward community litter pick-up.

I had a wonderful time consulting with residents, assessing the flora and fauna and ensuring the grounds are kept neat and tidy. I was glad to be joined by people from so many local community groups. If you would like to get involved please contact me at the Forest Lake Ward office – support local businesses and get fit.

Maintenance around the Lake One question raised with me when I’m out and about in the Ward is the fenced area at the lake parklands next to the amphitheatre. This project has not proceeded as quickly as I would have liked. I thank everyone for their patience, and if you have any question contact the Forest Lake ward office.

I sincerely thank locals for making Forest Lake such a great place to live. Together, I look forward to keeping our suburb an inviting place for all to live. News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The Clubs Riverlakes game scheduled for the 25th February was unfortunately a wash out due to exceptionally heavy rain, causing the Logan River and the course lakes to merge into a vast sea of water. Our next game on the 11th March fared much better with 22 players making the trek out to the lovely country Lowood course. After a pretty wet few months, the course was looking fabulous.

Our prizewinners for Lowood were: A Grade - winner Don Pickwick on 40 points, with Mick Morley Runner-up on 39 points; B Grade– winner Graeme Frew on 40 points, with Glenn Mostyn Runner-up on 35 points.

Our Long Drive exponents were Bob Brose (A), Jason Rowe (B) and Kara Holt (Ladies).

The nearest the pin winners were Graeme Frew (5th hole), Dave Chettle (11th hole), Kara Holt (14th hole), the nearest approach winners were Pat Ayling (4th hole) and Mick Morley (18th hole).

Our Bradman award went to Kirrily Brooke on 28 points. Congratulations to all of the prizewinners on the day.

It’s been a busy month for our community with lots of events, activities and announcements.

After a successful first year, I was pleased to launch the 2018 Oxley Spirit of ANZAC Award (photo right).

This competition is open to students in Year 11 to submit a short essay, poem or piece of artwork on what the spirit of ANZAC means to them. Thank you to local RSL Sub Branches who have supported this award.

The winner and five highly commended entries will be announced next month.

I was also overwhelmed with entries for the first Oxley Easter Colouring In Competition for early childhood centres (photo left). This was warmly embraced by children, parents and educators with dozens of colourful entries submitted.

Finally, I was proud to host Federal Labor Leader Bill Shorten and Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen in our community to announce new initiatives to support local businesses (photo right).

Forest Lake Probus Club Update

A very special congratulations to a past Secretary of Forest Lake Probian Una Gray, who received Senior Citizen Of The Year Award in the Australia Day Honours List. Una’s contribution to her community covers many years of dedication in various areas. She initiated the making of pillowcases for oncology children and the Heart Foundation Walk in Forest Lake. For many years she worked in a Meals on Wheels kitchen. Una is also known in the restaurant and wine industry for her pioneering work.

Our previous monthly speaker was Julie Newport, a private practitioner, whose topic was Macular Degeneration. After an anatomy session on the workings of the eye, Julie covered some strategies on what individuals can do to improve eye hygiene.

This also included one’s diet.

On the 20th February, Forest Lake, together with the Goodna-Springfield Club, played host to the 25th Birthday Celebrations of Probus Queensland. For a young Club like ours, this was an important opportunity and a big deal.

Probians from various Clubs in our region attended the scrumptious lunch at The Lion in Richlands. The special birthday cake was cut by PAQ President Brian Gilmore and the presidents of the host Clubs Frances Rowe of Forest Lake and Pat Galligan of Goodna-Springfield respectively.

At the Annual General Meeting a new Committee was elected to lead the Club for the following year. President Barb Grant, Vice President David Grant, Treasurer Frances Rowe, Secretary Shirley Soblusky, Programme Janet du Thaler, Activities Lyn Scott, Membership Ellen Hobb, Newsletter Chris Toy, Welfare Ruth Boock, PAQ Delegate Frances Rowe, Publicity Marge Breitenbach.

Incoming President Barb especially thanked Frances for her contribution and the previous Committee. She expressed the hope that members will be enjoying a happy year of fun, fellowship as well as friendship where we would all support one another.

Brian Phillips ex-Newsletter Editor will be sorely missed as he is retiring due to health reasons but will still contribute his poetry, Probus is a social club for retirees and semi-retirees and we meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 10am at the Uniting Church Hall, Waterford Road Ellen Grove. Stamp collecting...is it an investment?

People collect for a number of reasons. Some have it as a life long purpose to complete a country or theme as much as their finances allow and take pleasure in this exercise. Others use collecting as a study into the various fields of philately in the hope of making new discoveries. Others collect solely for the investment in the hope that when the time comes to liquidate, the return will exceed the amount that could have been garnered from other more mainstream types of investment.

Stamp collecting, like other forms of investment, undergoes booms and busts. The aim, of course, is to buy at a low period and sell high. This is not as easy as it seems. The keys to making any investment pay in philately is knowledge, rarity, demand and condition. To think that one can just go down to the post office and buy stamps over the counter and sell at a later date at a large profit is just not true in 99% of cases.

Good investors have studied stamps for a long time, they have the knowledge of which pieces are rare and are able to judge the condition. They should also be able to understand the stamp market. No point collecting what other people do not want to buy.

The 1970’s - 80’s experienced a huge boom period when people were crowding the post offices buying up sheets of new issues and the resultant demand drove up prices. I personally recall the sheet of 1975 45c Christmas stamps available at the post office for $45 then selling within weeks by dealers for $300 and there was no shortage of buyers.

Then it all went haywire. With all that stock in the market, prices crashed and now you would be lucky to get 30c in the dollar for face value stock bought at that time. These ‘investors’ lacked three of the above four qualities and paid dearly. There is still great investment to be made but it requires skill to ensure you do not end up in the same situation as the aforementioned people.

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

Once again the Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch will be conducting its ANZAC Day March and Service at the Memorial Park on the Esplanade by the Lake on April 25th. We are again anticipating a record attendance in company with the growing interest Australia wide in ANZAC Day. Serving ADF personnel and ex servicemen and women are welcome to join RSL members in the March which will form up outside the Salvation Army Hall at 25 High St Forest Lake ready to move off at 8.30am. Marchers will proceed up High St before turning into the Forest Lake Boulevard and then turn up the Esplanade into the Memorial Park. Those unable to March but wish to participate, will be provided with transport by the Vintage Car Club.

For the first time we hope to have sufficient servicewomen and ex servicewomen to form up their own section within the March. This is the initiative of President Mr Bob Richards who firmly believes that females should have their own section so that they receive appropriate recognition. So ladies please accept this invitation and turn out with us.

Another first is that companion dogs under training and trained dogs will also march with their allocated ex service personnel. RAAF Amberley will provide a fly past down the Lake and the RAAF Cadet Squadron from Squadron 219 Archerfield will provide the Catafalque party which is an important part of the Service. Should any organisation or members of the public wish to publicly lay a wreath, it should be lodged with the wreath management team no later than 9am which is the time at which the formal ceremony will commence.

Several VIPs and local dignitaries have been invited to join Sub-branch members on this important date. Forest Lake Rotary Club will provide parking attendants and the BBQ for RSL Sub-branch members following completion of the Service.

In February/March each year, the Lions Club of Forest Lake hosts the Lions Youth of the Year. This prestigious event for young people boasts many high-profile Australians among the ranks of former entrants. These include: Kevin Rudd, Peter Beattie, ABC’s Sabra Lane and Senator Simon Birmingham.

By entering the program, which is now in its 51st year, high school students have an unequalled opportunity to experience an interview situation – in a friendly atmosphere – and a chance to practise their public speaking skills.

This year students from Forest Lake State High School and St Johns College competed at the local level. From our Club level competition, Rohan Steger from Forest Lake State High School advanced from Club level to Zone, then competed Rohan Steger 2018 Forest Lake Lions Youth of the Year. at the Regional Finals in Ipswich on Saturday 10th March.

While Rohan didn’t proceed to the next level, President Lion April Lindel commented that Rohan Steger is a fine young man and the Lions Club of Forest Lake were well represented.

Family, members of the Lions Club, Principal Denise Kostoswski Forest Lake State High School were there to support Rohan at Regional finals. The Chair of the Judges congratulated Rohan and commented how much she enjoyed his speech.

A key issue in investment circles recently is the Opposition’s proposal to amend franking credit rules such that they might reduce one’s tax payable position (excluding any Medicare liability) to zero but will no longer result in an ATO refund of excess franking credits. The Opposition is concerned that, particularly in the case of self-funded retirees, the refunding of excess credits, which effectively boosts disposable income, is ‘unfair’ and provides unjustified welfare for the rich.

The franking credit system was introduced by then Treasurer Paul Keating back in 1987.

However, the designation of franking credits as refundable tax offsets only came into effect some 14 years later. The franking credit system effectively prevents double taxation of income, that is, taxation on the profits of a company paying a dividend and then additional tax when the dividend is assessed in the shareholder’s hands. Taxpayers earning above $37,000 will generally still have an additional amount of tax to pay, depending on their marginal tax rate.

Governments of various persuasions are always keen to promote saving for one’s retirement in order to minimise the drain on the public purse from the payment of pensions. Many people try to respond by structuring their financial affairs within the laws of the day and in many instances may invest in Australian shares to generate a tax effective income, which might include some refunds from time to time of excess franking credits.

Not all of these people are what one might regard as rich or super wealthy. They are simply structuring their finances wisely and effectively. However, eliminating the refundable credits is effectively cancelling the benefits of a strategy they may have put in place several years ago to minimise the liability on the public purse, and their reward, depending on who is in government, could be being penalised for that strategy. I simply ask whether that is really fair.

What is a little concerning is the apparent comment that people won’t be paying any more tax, they just might not get a tax refund any more. Suppose your local recreational club decided to scrap lower member prices for food and beverages and then said, “Don’t worry, sir, the cost of the meals haven’t gone up, it just means that you won’t get a discount anymore.”

Those semantics don’t quite resonate with me!

Family Focus

I love April! It’s my favourite time of year. Footy season has started, State of Origin is just around the corner, the weather has cooled off, we’re through the first term of the school year, and it feels like the initial rush of the year’s beginning has backed off.

So, it’s a great time to get outside together as a family. Studies have shown that time outside improves both physical and mental health. It’s even better when we get outside together. We can leave our phones and devices at home and just go on a bushwalk or ride the bikes. The joy and the memories created in that space are priceless.

It’s so easy to miss the opportunity when it presents itself. There are household chores to catch up on, work to do, or just that new program on Netflix. But, as we become an increasingly indoors society, it’s so important that we make time to get outside.

Ronald Reagan (US President 1981-1989) was famous for saying, “I’ve often said there’s nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.” There’s something rejuvenating about being outside in nature, soaking in the sun, feeling the breeze on the skin and experiencing God’s creation. We participate in something far bigger than ourselves.

But, let’s add another element to this. I think it’s even better to be out in nature when we do it in community. It’s one thing to be outside, it’s another to be outside with family, friends and community. We see the biggest events in our community each year outside, from school fetes to the community Christmas Carols to ANZAC Day. One of the best days to be outside as a community, enjoying the weather but also acknowledging something deeper, is to participate in the Forest Lake ANZAC Day service. It’s easy to say, ‘attend’ but it’s better to say ‘participate’. When we gather at the amphitheatre to remember the fallen and acknowledge those who have served, we are participants in something far greater than ourselves in a setting that will outlive us.

This year’s ANZAC Day marks a special anniversary – the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice at 11am on the 11th Day of the 11th Month of 1918 – the day the guns fell silent. It’s important that we gather as a community to remember this day and acknowledge all those who serve to keep us safe and free. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13). Please come and join in ANZAC Day, as we acknowledge those who have been willing to lay down their lives for us.

As you take the opportunity to get outside and to participate in things that are far bigger than you, I pray you and your family will feel rejuvenated and inspired as you invest in what’s most important in life.

Monthly Update

Last month, the Club had 52 keen members head off for a visit to the Summerland Camel Farm at Harrisville on a pretty wet morning.

On arrival at the farm, we were welcomed by the owners, who presented us with a wonderful morning tea of coffee and home-made scones - all made using their locally produced camels milk. Morning tea was followed by a very interesting talk on how, why and where the farm was formed and where it is envisioned to go if all the planning comes to fruition.

With the rain stopped, we were taken over to the farm ‘kitchen’ where a wide range of skin products is produced from camels milk. Stories of how this all came about and some of the miraculous benefits of camel milk were explained to us by Gareth, who had us all enthralled. A few hardy members ventured over to the milking bays to see how camels were milked at their eight-stand dairy. Plans are afoot to build a full production dairy capable of milking up to 100 camels each morning and afternoon. Congratulations to the Summerland team for a wonderful and educational visit.

With everyone talking about camels, we left for the Dugandan Hotel at Boonah for our two-course lunch and some liquid refreshments. All in all a great day was had by everyone.

The Clubs ‘Extra Activity’ for March was lunch at the Jindalee Hotel with over 40 members attending, with plenty of talk about the Camel Farm and the recent cruise to New Zealand.

The Clubs AGM was held on Friday 16th March at The Lion, Pine Road, Richlands where the 2018 management committee was elected as follows: President – Leonie Ayling; Treasurer – Kay Wills; Secretary – Lynn Matthews; Activity Officer – Les Brooks. Congratulations on your appointments.

What a busy month April is shaping up to be! Easter is early, ANZAC Day, the Commonwealth Games, A Garden A-Fair on the 14 and 15 April at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens and our bus trip on 12 April to Madura Tea Plantation. When will I have time to spend in the garden?

Autumn’s a busy season in the vegetable garden. Summer crops are fading and it’s time to move on. Sow lettuce, radishes, spinach, turnips and leeks. Most can be started in pots and transplanted as the soil cools. Also you can now plant onions and garlic. Watch for pests, especially if the weather stays warm. Choose pesticides with care, making sure that they are suitable for your particular crop.

Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) a flower that appeared in almost every garden when I was growing up, seems to have vanished from most gardens. Any time in April or May is the best time to plant seeds of this pretty little flower and have a colourful trellis of sweet peas in a next couple of months.

In the Auditorium at Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens on the 14 and 15 April, the Queensland Council of Garden Clubs will be holding their annual A Garden A-Fair. This is an inter-club competition between garden clubs with over 50 classes resulting in a spectacular display of flowers, plants and floral art. Last year we won the Floral Art section as well as members collecting prizes in the flowers and foliage classes. Why not come along, check out the displays and it is free entry to the show. Opening hours are Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sunday 9.30am – 3.30pm. I can recommend the Devonshire teas are yummy. In addition there will be over a dozen market stalls for you to check out.

Do you have any geraniums growing? There is a good chance your geranium is actually a Pelargonium! A mistake made in the 1800’s when classifying these plants is still being carried on today. Nurseries are selling plants labelled as geraniums when they are pelargoniums.

This month we have Linda Brennan from Eco Botanica for our guest speaker. Linda will cover several organic topics including home-grown herbs and edible plants. Her presentations are always interesting and enjoyable.

Next month Barry Kable will enlighten us on growing orchids. Why not come along and share the morning with us?

Forest Lake Rotary Club update

by Alan Greig The members of your local Rotary Club of Forest Lake invite interested people in the community to attend a meeting as our guest. Do come along and be surprised at how Rotary has changed over the years. While the focus is always on helping those in our community that are in need, our vibrant club encourages every member to network their business, share interests and most of all socialise and enjoy making new friends.

We meet each fortnight on the second and fourth Monday nights of each month at the Richlands Lions Football Club at 7.15pm for a 7.30 start. We have a break during the meeting for dinner.

People just like you and me get together and find ways to help others in our local community. It is really exciting to know you make a difference to the lives of people in need in both our local community as well as the world community.

As with most organisations, there is a cost involved which runs at about $15.00 per week but in my view the pleasure one gets from helping our community far outweighs the cost.

For example Project Love and Care which was managed by Anne George for many years (prior to her recent sad passing) with the help of her band of volunteers. We calculated that Anne had distributed more than 63,000 packs for young children in foster care who often arrived at a carer’s home with absolutely nothing. The packs comprised a cuddly toy, new underwear, toiletries including toothpaste, toothbrush, hair brush, a colouring-in book and pencils or story book and several other personal items depending upon the age of the child. Sometimes we were able to include a knitted rug made by our knitting group. Forest Lake Rotary Club provides about 6,000 new hair brushes for each pack per year.

Our Club is soon to be honoured for our community work when Councillor Owen Taylor opens the new park at Heathwood complete with children’s playground and BBQ. It is to be named Rotary Park.

We are also very active in the local citizenship ceremonies.

Our main fund raising activity is in the provision of Sausage Sizzles at various outlets. The specially designed and built trailer (sponsored by the Heritage Bank) can be seen travelling from location to location within the local environs.

First Forest Lake parkrun a big success

Organisers of the new parkrun track in Forest Lake were pleased to see so many locals and other clubs come to support the launch of the all-fitness weekly 5k run.

With over 559 participants on the day, the launch attracted regular parkrun goers from as far as Toowoomba and many from surrounding areas.

Given the launch date was St Patrick’s Day, there was plenty of green in the sea of colour as participants walked or ran the course that attracted much positive feedback for its shade and sometimes challenging hills.

Forest Lake Magpies Club Update

The footy season has officially started with first games done and dusted. Our little U8’s, U9’s and U10’s had Gala Days whilst the U11’s, U13’ U14’s and U16’s had their first fixture game. The littlies had a good day as did our slightly older boys. We had wins and losses, so we’re off to a great start.

Our second littlest team, U7’s, has a Gala day coming up that we are hosting. It’s going to be a big day but we are all set and looking forward to it.

Even though things are under way, its not too late to join. Pop on down on a Tuesday or Thursday night between 5pm and 7pm to sign up. We’re always happy to welcome new members.

It’s also not too late to volunteer, so if you’ve got free time we’d love to see you. There is always something that needs attention or teams that need assistance, so we will never turn away a willing helper and I guarantee you’ll feel great about yourself for doing it. It’s a win-win I say.

Speaking of winning, we’d like to thank SJK Electrical for helping keep our boys hydrated with the donation of drink bottles. It’s very much appreciated.

There’s still lots of improvements happening at the club, some quite obvious and some not so. It won’t be long and we’ll have a nice, new, very large sign at the entry to the club. We’re also in the middle of planning out new seating for spectators, so we’ll be able to fit many more bottoms on seats. So all I can say is...watch this space.

Lyn’s trivia games were hotly contested, once again highlighting what clever people we have in our Branch. Lyn introduced a limerick game and some very good ones were thought up.

Rocks Riverside is our destination in April for a yummy picnic and a time of some fun games.

We head out of town later this month for an extended trip enjoying sights in and around the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and historical Gympie region.

A full and exciting itinerary. We all have lots of fun on these trips.

Last month a group of members and friends travelled to Lake Moogerah for morning tea, visiting Bartons Rose Farm with some rose purchases made.

Then onto the beautiful Kooroomba Vineyard/Lavender Farm. A welcoming and informative talk from Owner Doogan was followed by a lovely two course lunch. On Friday 16, several members and friends enjoyed a performance by Geraldine Turner at the Logan Entertainment Centre, lunching at the bistro after the show. The movie group have been busy planning their next outing. A full year calendar available at Branch meetings.
