We’ve had our Easter break and are now back into the swing of things. I hope you all had a happy Easter.

The weekend before Easter we hosted the u7’s Gala Day. It was a big event with approximately 15 clubs involved with about 20 teams in total.

The day ran very smoothly thanks to lots of pre-organising and plenty of help on the day from a variety of people, from BRL (Brisbane Rugby league) representatives all the way down to our members parents. A huge thank you to all. The kiddies had a great time playing three short games each against different clubs, clubs that they wouldn’t normally play against such as Stradbroke Island and Russell Island. The visiting clubs came well prepared for a big day, around our field looked a little like ‘shade tent city’. It was a great day that was very successful, everything went off without a hitch. Again, thank you to all who helped out.

Also prior to Easter, Rob Brown from Corporate Comedians, had organised a fundraiser evening on our behalf. It was held at Forest Lake Hotel and was called ‘Watch Footy with the Legends’. Essentially it was watching footy on a big screen with other footy fans along with Willie Pictured from left to right: Willie Mason, Mason (ex Bulldags/NSW player) and Chris Walker (ex Broncos and Rob Brown and Chris Walker QLD player) with a fundraising raffle thrown in. Thanks to Rob’s hard work a few hundred dollars were raised for us. For a ‘not for profit’ organisation, this was just fabulous. Rob is all about helping out community clubs like ours and to say we appreciate his effort enormously is an understatement.

Thanks Rob from Corporate Comedians, you are amazing.

We still have room on some teams and it’s not too late to join. You can either come on down to training on a Tuesday or Thursday evening or you can send an email to admin@forestlakejrlfc.com.au if you think you’d like to give Rugby League a go. Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Graham and I have been completing the University of Tasmania’s Wicking online dementia course and as well as enlightening and informative, it has helped in our understanding and way of relating to Graham’s mum who has dementia.

One of the things the course talks about with people who have dementia is that the person you know and love is still in there. We see such evidence of this in Graham’s mum - her sense of humour, in particular is evident every single time we visit. Her sweetness and kindness are still there and show in the compliments and love given every ten minutes or so when she realises all over again who we are.

I remember a similar story about my grandma who had dementia in her final days when a son she hadn’t seen for many years due to living in the UK came to visit, knowing the end was near and to support my father. Even though she didn’t know who my uncle was, he knew who she was due to the character traits that had marked her life the whole of her mothering years, and again, particularly her sharp sense of humour.

There are some things that can’t be taken away from us, no matter how our bodies or organs, such as our brains, are deteriorating.

And it set me thinking about Mother’s Day and what character traits I want to still be visible when I’m in decline due to age or dementia or some other ailment that isn’t evident currently.

What do I want my children to remember and still catch glimpses of?

A friend recently lost an aunt who had been a difficult person her entire life. Her children were nearly all estranged from her and in her last days, half of them did not visit due to the hurt she had caused over the years.

Death is always sad and hard but this sort of discord from a life of conflict made the whole thing so much sadder than it needed to be.

Just as our good character traits often remain, our not-so-good ones do too. Are we living in such a way that what will come shining through in the end draws people to us and not repel them?

It’s easy to fall into the trap as mothers to think that our children should love us simply because we have the title. In reality, we aren’t owed anything from simply (or oftentimes difficultly!) giving birth to our children. Like other relationships, we need to strive to be a mother whose children want to be with her, not rest on our laurels and feel that our children are obligated to love us.

This Mother’s Day, if you’re a mum, why not focus on you - who you are to your children, what legacy you are leaving them, what they will find hidden amongst the ravages of aging or illness. And if you can do that reflecting whilst enjoying a glass of wine and lying in a bubble bath then all the better!

Monthly Update

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club’s April activity was a day trip out to Lake Wivenhoe. While the weather was not perfect with light rain falling as we departed Forest Lake, by the time we reached the picnic area and set up our site, the rain had stopped. A wonderful morning tea was followed by a BBQ lunch and a selection of desserts all washed down with some lovely Australian wines! Thanks to all members who provided the morning tea, salads and desserts and for helping with the cooking and preparation.

Games of Bocce and Badminton took place while waiting for the meals to be ready, and after lunch a few of the ‘Blokes’ joined in a game of cricket that had started up by a great bunch of young people playing nearby. With everyone suitably fed, watered and gamed out, we packed up and headed back home, calling into the Fernvale Bakery to stock up on a huge variety of fabulous pies.

The Clubs April ‘Extra Activity’ was lunch held at the Red Chili Thai Restaurant at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre with over 30 members attending.

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at The Lion, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am.

Million Paws for a Cause!

Fifty years ago the Rolling Stones extolled the virtues of ‘Walking the dog’ in song and every year since, millions of people worldwide have walked their dogs in an effort to keep themselves and their pooches healthy.

Originally conceived by veterinarian Dr Cam Day 25 years ago, Million Paws Walk is the RSPCA’s flagship fundraiser.

There are 19 walk locations this year and you can simply visit www.millionpawswalk.com.au to find the walk location closest to you. The 3.5km Brisbane walk will take place on Sunday 20 May from 8.30am—1pm with the walk officially kicking off at 10am at South Bank Cultural Forecourt. With numerous stalls, activities for the kids, dog demonstrations, the day is set to be full of fun for the whole family - including the furry ones!

Over 50,000 animals pass through RSPCA Qld Animal Care Centres every year and well over 14,000 are dogs that have been surrendered, abandoned or seized by Inspectors. These dogs are not as fortunate as your much loved family pet. They often need special veterinary and behavioural treatment and they all need to be de-sexed and vaccinated before they have the chance to find a new home. The money raised through the RSPCA Million Paws Walk enables these dogs to receive daily care, veterinary treatment and funds rehoming programs. The cost to our community for these animals in need is in the millions.

RSPCA Qld is encouraging everyone to register for their local walk location and start fundraising today. Even if you don’t have a dog, you can still join a walk and raise vital funds. Money raised through online fundraising, the sale of merchandise and activities on the day will help to fund our critical work.

Taking part in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk is a great way to help animals in need. All animal lovers are encouraged to brush off their walking shoes, pull out their pet’s leash and bring along their ‘best friend’ to Australia’s leading pet event.

This year RSPCA Qld is hoping to raise over $640,000 - money that is absolutely vital.

“Our annual operating costs are over $48 million in Queensland and we receive less than two percent of that figure in Government funding. So every cent raised helps,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty.

Inspirational mum takes on the Great Ocean Road Forest Lake local and single mum of three, Nicole Grey, will this year be participating in the Great Ocean Road Running Festival just three years after not being able to run even 50 metres.

“I was at least 35kgs overweight so I decided to buy a treadmill as I was too embarrassed to run in public and I’ve never looked back,” said Nicole.

“Being a single mum of three beautiful children, I could see how achieving these goals was impacting my kids. They were so proud of their mum and wanting to join in.

“I joined a local triathlon group in Brisbane last April who have become my tri family and who have inspired, supported and motivated me to keep aiming higher and higher helping me achieve my goals.

The Great Ocean Road Running Festival will take place on May 19 and 20 with the event offering one of the most spectacular marathons in the world. The course stretches along the coastal towns from Lorne to Apollo Bay and runners of all distances can soak up some of Australia’s most scenic beaches and breathtaking views during the annual two-day running festival.

“Over the past year I have run two half marathons both under my goal of two hours, multiple 10kms and 5km races and two Olympic standard triathlons but the best races have been the 1km dashes I’ve run with my kids.

“Seeing how excited and proud they are to run with their mum melts my heart and makes me realise that I’m doing a good job.

My 10 year old son now trains and competes in triathlons with me, a boy who wasn’t motivated to run half a soccer field during a game, a boy that is now his happiest when he’s training next to his mum.”

Over seven thousand participants of all ages and abilities are expected to run or walk one of seven event distances ranging from the 1.5km Kids’ Gallop to the 60km Ultra Marathon.

“My family will be in Brisbane but will be cheering from afar.

We only have one life and, as a nurse, I have seen how that can be cut short. Making the most out of each day motivates me to run further. You only get one life and one chance to do what makes you happy and for me running does that.”

Registration also gives participants free access to a range of activities across the weekend such as a kite festival, movie screenings, live-music and yoga sessions so everyone can enjoy the festivities. To register and for more information, visit www.greatoceanroadrunfest.com.au.

Forest Lake Lions Club update

by Michael Janz Each year, the Forest Lake Lions, through the management of Lion Carmen Eramudugolla, recycles glasses as part of the Lions Recycle for Sight project.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program, headquartered in Queensland and operating throughout Australia and overseas.

We receive requests from humanitarian organisations either travelling to a third world country or supplying shipping container loads of suitable humanitarian aid from Australia to groups in the third world.

Over the 26 years that the Australian program has operated, the program, has delivered over 7 million pairs of refurbished quality spectacles to men, women and children in need in Africa, Europe, Middle East, Indian Sub- continent, East Asia, and the Far East, China, the countries of the Pacific Rim and Southern Asia and Oceania.

In the past 10 years, several members of our Marine Branch have been able to use their oceangoing yachts to reach and test villagers in the remotest areas for eyesight and deliver spectacles to them.

Over the past year our community has donated almost 2000 pairs of eyeglasses. These glasses add to the 500,000 collected across Australia every year. These glasses are forwarded to our two centres for recycling by our team of Volunteers, Participants from Work for the dole and Department of Community Services.

Your old glasses help people like Petrona. Like many third world people, Petrona sews all her clothes for herself and her family of six. She also helps her husband on the farm. Her vision was becoming increasingly blurred so she decided to walk to the eye glass clinic in her village. She is grateful for the free pair of eyeglasses which enabled her to continue with her work.

So many reasons to join the Dragons

There are six main reasons why you should join the Forest Lake Dragons: AFL is Australia’s greatest game; friendship; time management; learn new skills; challenge limits; and your health.

First known as Melbourne Rules Football, AFL was invented in 1858. As the game spread across Victoria, it became known as VFL. Now we have an AFL Women’s league (WAFL) that is taking the country by storm.

Forming lasting friendships at school can be difficult. It is essential to give your children other avenues to connect them with other kids the same age, who are doing the same thing and having fun while they get to know each other and get to know the game.

There is no doubt that we are all pressed for time.

However, when you are in the Dragons AFL Sports Club, you know when training is, you know when the games are scheduled, you know where you are playing and you know who is bringing the fruit!

It doesn’t matter if you have not tried AFL before, you can simply try it now. New skills will be learnt every week. Some skills will be picked up quickly along the way and others are harder to master. Members continue to learn the rules of the game every week and improve just by turning up to training and played games in the Brisbane Junior Competition.

Getting out of your comfort zone will shake things up for the better. New experiences always challenge your limits, both mentally and physically. So break your routine and make room in your schedule for AFL with the Dragons.

National Volunteer Week runs from 21-27 May 2018.

If you reside in Forest Lake or the suburbs surrounding, and you are aged 50 or over, come along and enjoy a calendar of great meetings, trips and activities to suit both singles and couples. Coming up at this monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Branch meeting on Thursday 10th May is fun and entertainment. Meeting place - The Lion (Soccer Club), 133 Pine Road, Richlands, 9.30am sign in, 10am start.

In April, we visited the Museum of Brisbane to view the Maoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Last Dancer, a Portrait of Li Cunxin exhibition.

A fun time was also had by the Ten Pin Bowlers.

Congratulations to the Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Team â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Chuckersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; who were victorious on the day over the women. On Friday 6 April, several members and friends enjoyed Exposing Edith (Edith Piaf) at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

The movie group are also planning their next outing.

Our April meeting was well attended. We welcomed guests from the Forest Lake Branch of the RSL to hear a very interesting talk from RSL Queensland Vice President, Mr John Strachan OAM. On behalf of our members, our President, Dan Baldwin, laid a wreath on ANZAC Day at the Forest Lake Commemoration Service.

The Australian Outback Spectacular is our planned trip on Sunday 27 May. Later this month Branch members will also be attending the Annual Zone 101 Conference at Greenback RSL hosted by the Browns Plains branch.

Late last month we headed off on an extended trip to enjoy the sights in and around the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and historical Gympie region.

To our members who are unwell or recovering from surgery, our best wishes for a return to good health.

I have often wondered how dogs help in the recovery and ongoing life of veterans who are wounded or suffering stress disorders arising from combat experiences. The use of police and customs dogs is quite evident and more easily understood but it is not so evident in the use of a trained companion dog.

It is often very hard to get a veteran to talk, let alone print a story, about injuries received in combat. Thus I am going to use the example of a young amputee to help readers understand the importance that a trained companion dog can have on the life of a disabled person.

Trae is a 16 year old boy with a rare and complicated medical condition resulting in extensive surgeries requiring the bones in his left leg being replaced with an internal growing robotic prosthesis and while this was an above the knee amputation he still had his own foot and hip joint. Recuperation meant long and lonely periods in hospital which naturally impacted upon his mental health.

Late in 2017 his condition came to the attention of Bob Richards, President of Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch. The Subbranch sponsors a PHU (Paws for Human Understanding) program who asked Hannah Richards (Head Trainer) to search for a suitable dog to become Traeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s companion to help his growth into an independent young man.

Margaret Wedgwood of Dogs Queensland donated Pozer, a black Labrador who was introduced into Traeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. Trae had to have the prosthetic replaced four times arising from falls or unintentional and/or careless bumps. Pozer was trained to protect Traeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s left side always providing a barrier between his fragile left leg and obstacles including humans.

This has had a huge impact on Traeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life both physically and mentally. A very close relationship has developed and continues to develop. Space does not allow me to expand on the monumental partnership that Pozer has made to Traeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life.

This is but one example of how the RSL assists our community.

David Grant, Activities Officer, has organised a ECO cruise to Bribie Island on May 23. It will include cruising the Pumicestone Passage and a Devonshire Tea. Following lunch at the Bribie RSL CLUB, there is a visit to the Bribie Community Arts Centre. Other than the cost of lunch, the trip is free to members and partners. Any Returned Service men and women are most welcome to join members on the day.

centenary evening VIEW club update It will be the turn of the big girls to play princesses at the May meeting of the Centenary Evening VIEW Club. Members and their guests will be celebrating the Royal Wedding by dressing up in their finery. It will be time to dust off tiaras and don jewels. It will also be the occasion when encounters with royalty will be shared, royal memorabilia will be displayed and memories of our own weddings will be told. Nostagia, humour and good fun will be the ingredients of the night.

Happy Mother’s Day Celebrated all around the world, Mother’s Day has become an institution and a huge sale day for cards and flowers, massages and jewellery. The tradition is a fairly new one in Australia, relatively speaking, with the day only officially recognised since 1924.

The occasion was begun by Sydney woman Janet Heyden who was on the committee of the Home for Destitute Women and Children in Strathfield. Janet noticed the amount of women who were no longer acknowledged as mothers after the loss of so many sons in the first World War. Firstly organising gifts to be donated by local businesses, Janet then appealed to the public through newspapers asking people to remember the mothers of Sydney. With an overwhelming response from the public, Janet placed the same appeal in the newspapers each year for seven years and would deliver the gifts herself and the day became what we now and enjoy today.

Less than 100 years on and Mother’s Day is a significant day on the yearly calendar although the gifts and level of spending has certainly changed. Far from the household appliances, washing lines and ironing boards prominent in Mother’s Day advertising in the 50s and 60s, today’s mums can expect to receive more luxury gifts such as a massage, dinner at a restaurant and jewellery.

In other countries, while the cultures may differ, the most popular gift is flowers and a card with the sentiment the same—taking time out to honour and celebrate one of the most important people in our lives, our mum.

by John Prout May is the month we celebrate Mother’s Day, so happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, nannas and grandmas. At this time of the year the Chrysanthemum (chrysanthemum grandiflorum) is the popular flower to give on Mother’s Day. Maybe it’s because it ends in ‘mum’. Instead of giving your mother a bunch of flowers that will last a week or so, why not give her a living plant? There are many lovely and colourful ones available from your local nursery and this gift will last for years. The earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival when the Greeks dedicated the day to the maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

Last month A Garden A-Fair was held in the auditorium at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. This is an inter-club challenge between the 40 garden clubs in south-east Queensland and organised by the Queensland Council of Garden Clubs. What can I say about our entries? The floral art ladies did a magnificent job and I am pleased to report that, for the second year in a row, our club was successful in winning the Jarvis Nye Trophy for the most points awarded for our floral art exhibits. Well done to the team. Class winners were Angela Naumann, Maya Singh and Andrea Donnelly with many other exhibits in the placings. The full list of results will be in the May edition of The Good Dirt.

Our last bus trip (pictured) was a very enjoyable and informative trip to Madura Tea Plantation. We all learnt a lot about the process of making tea before we purchased it in the supermarkets.

The May guest speaker will be Barry Kable discussing orchids. Barry’s home has been on Gardening Australia show.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update

The speaker for April was Peter Dunn, a retired electrical engineer whose topic was ‘Australia at War’ but who actually concentrated on the impact of the American forces in Brisbane. His interest in this arm of military history could be traced back to his father who was a gunnner in World War II. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, December 7th 1941, a Pensacola Convoy of nine ships arrived in Brisbane on 22nd December 1941. What an amazing speedy reaction by the U.S.A. The then Lennons Plaza became an American Base and some high ranking personnel were actually domiciled in some of the units upstairs. Room 812 was occupied by a chief Intelligence Officer viz. Casper Weinberger who later became Secretary of Defence under President Ronald Reagan. As the war progressed, there was a continuous increase in American forces personnel, who required accommodation in Brisbane.

Somerville House became the Headquarters for U.S Base Section 3.

Morgan Smith building at the University of Queensland had just been completed and became the operational base of our Australian General Blamey. It is well known that Allied Commander in the Pacific, General Macarthur set up his headquarters in the old AMP building and remained there until September 1944. Now Macarthur Chambers is a museum where memorabilia can be viewed.

There was a USA medical laboratory and morgue at Yeerongpilly. The Americans embalmed their dead and before the end of the war, from the Mausoleum in Townsville, they ‘unburied’ their dead, then transported the bodies to Hawaii where they were reburied. Slaughter Falls was an ammunition site where torpedoes were buried. Forest Lake was also an ammunition dump so don’t dig too deeply!

Some of the many thousands of photos can be viewed at the Brisbane City Hall. It was fascinating to learn about the contribution made by Brisbane and how our city has changed. Una Gray passed a vote of thanks.

A few issues ago I mentioned that I had recently retired and as a result changed the time and money continuum (or is it conundrum!) in my life.

Yes, plenty of time but not as much money, and therefore a need to exercise a little more care in the use of financial resources. I decided to revert back to some real budget basics and thought I would share the essence of them with you. You don’t have to wait until retirement to do them, but they probably have more significance in retirement.

Firstly, after preparing a fairly detailed budget I set up several separate sub accounts in addition to the general day to day bank account. These are to cover such things as contingencies (including any larger R&M type expenditures on the home or car, and the totally unexpected), holidays, surplus savings and a couple of accounts for my two (at present) grandchildren, hopefully to provide a little surprise bonus for them when they are much older. Each fortnight when I receive funds from the Super A/C I transfer set amounts to each of these, so that there is hopefully enough to draw down when those expenditures arise.

Some might call it primitive but complementing this are six small jars in the cupboard which are working very effectively. These are: • groceries • entertainment (meals out, drinks, movies etc.)

• presents (birthdays, Christmas, weddings etc.)

• Naseem (to be spent by my wife without any need for accountability) • large coins ($2, $1 and $0.50 to spend on anything you like) • small coins ($0.20 and below, great for weekly entrance fees to the local markets!)

Again, set amounts are placed in these jars each fortnight and funds withdrawn as needed.

For example, money will be taken from the groceries jar for trips to the supermarket and the change in notes will be returned, whilst the coins will be allocated to the two jars. It’s amazing how heavy the large coins jar is getting!

The jar system is great in that it is visual; you can see what is remaining and can therefore plan expenditures without any nasty surprises arising on the credit card statement.

The key thing to remember is that the above is a tool, a means to an end. I am happy to report that so far it is working very effectively for us, and perhaps it might do so for you too.

by Alan Greig The Rotary Clubs of Forest Lake and Goodna were hosted by the Greater Springfield Rotary Club at their regular meeting at the Springfield Tavern on Monday March 26.

More than 40 members attended the joint meeting and enjoyed a great evening of fellowship and camaraderie. The guest speaker, Airley Tillaman, a former Defence Force member, gave an excellent presentation about the highly successful and challenging program conducted by the Kokoda Youth Foundation for young people aged approximately 16 years of age and ‘at risk’.

Interested youth are prepared at the Gold Coast to face the challenging Kokoda Track across the forbidding Owen Stanley Range. Participants learn to manage difficulties, solve problems and the importance of tenacity of purpose. They also learn much of the history of the fighting between Australian and Japanese infantry from the native population.

The next sausage sizzle is scheduled at Office Works on May 15. Members are requested to advise Bob Briton as to their availability.

As usual, members manned the car parking for Forest Lake RSL members and invited dignitaries at the ANZAC Ceremonial on the Lakeside Memorial Park on April 25. Rotary members then provided a lakeside BBQ for RSL members.

Rotary Park, adjacent to the Heathwood shopping centre, is due to be named and opened on Saturday May 20 by Calamvale Councillor Owen-Taylor at about 11 am. This honour is being bestowed by Brisbane City Council for the great work that Forest Lake Rotary Club has provided to the local community in past years. After the naming ceremony, The Rotary Club will offer a BBQ service to attendees.

Our Heritage Bank BBQ trailer is certainly being put to good use as again the Club provided the BBQ service at the Inala TAFE Harmony Day during April.

Finally, I wonder if ladies in our community are aware that Rotary Club membership is not restricted to males. We do not discriminate against ladies and welcome enquiries from ladies in our community. So please contact our Secretary Brad Chipper at 0403 165 748 should you have some interest in joining us to help the community.

I’ve recently been approached by more and more people who are concerned about the rapid rate of increasing healthcare costs.

Seniors and pensioners in particular have been voicing their concerns that healthcare is becoming unaffordable and out of reach for those on pensions and modest incomes.

This includes stories of pensioners and single mothers skipping the health care they need because they can’t afford it.

Access to quality and affordable healthcare is one of my highest priorities for our community. It’s why I was pleased to recently welcome Labor’s Shadow Minister for Health and Medicare Catherine King MP to my annual seniors and pensioner’s morning tea and local Health Summit.

We heard directly from local residents about how rising health care costs are impacting them and their families.

Catherine spoke about our commitment to keep healthcare costs low and the need to stop the Medicare rebate freeze.

Medicare has been at the centre of healthcare for millions of Australians and we must protect it into the future. Our community should be particularly proud of Medicare as it was born right here in 1973 by the former Member for Oxley The Hon. Bill Hayden.

We also heard from local GP’s, doctors and radiologists at the Health Summit. This important gathering of local health professionals meant that we received direct feedback on how to better improve our health systems.

It’s important that our health professionals are given the support and resources they need to care for our community.

I’m always open to feedback on what our community needs for better healthcare.

We are very excited that our first ever men’s team are having a dream start in the Scotney Cup. At the time of writing, they had won two matches in a row: one away vs Ipswich and their first ever home game vs the Hustlers.

They definitely had the home ground advantage with a big crowd coming to see them play. We even have two dads on the team whose children play in the juniors and they were very proud to watch on.

We want to thank our local residents for their patience as this new initiative has sprung up and our season proper is now under way, with junior home games commencing on April 21st.

Our training is Tuesdays and Thursdays; Tuesdays from 5pm and Thursdays from 4.30pm, until 8pm. We have half a dozen Saturdays between now and August where we will have Junior games from 7am until midday and then preparations begin for seniors from 1pm, with all cleaning up etc usually completed by 5pm. At all other times (except when we have a casual hire or family day activity that are usually brief, such as one to a few hours morning or afternoon), our residents get to enjoy exclusive access to our wonderful fields and negligible issues with parking and noise.

The Fields are a popular hub for locals to engage in all manner of fun but our members pay to be able to use and access the facility at our designated activity times. We do our best to consider the needs of residents and we appreciate their understanding of this partnership.

Nonetheless, if there are any concerns residents or the community have in terms of being able to access the oval and you are absolutely sure - it being a public, shared facility - that it is our members causing that concern, I ask for you to contact me at any time via mobile 0412 560 143 or email vlposkus@gmail.com. Unfortunately, as I am an overstretched volunteer myself, I am unable to accommodate complaints on a Saturday.

If you are coming down to support our seniors, we ask the public to be mindful that - along with making sure you park on College Ave or in the carpark in the first instance - as it is our volunteers who pick up the rubbish (most of which is often not our own) you take yours with you when you leave or use the bins on site. This is also a request we make for those using the playground. There is also no smoking on or around the Forest Lake Sports Fields and clubhouse, as it is a predominantly junior sports location that is centred on health and fitness. If you must smoke up in the bleachers, please do us the courtesy of removing your butts.

Our juniors, this year fielding all teams U6-U9, are keen and raring to go for the 2018 season. Little Stingers is off and running as well. There are only very limited spots still available now, so if you want your child to have a crack at the great game of rugby, contact us or come down to training ASAP. We will also be starting a 7s program of both touch and tackle soon; if you would like to express your interest in that, please contact us as well. And of course, we are always after sponsors and volunteers!

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT

School holidays are always a great opportunity for us as Leaders to take some time off, chill out a bit and then spend some time together brainstorming ideas and activities that we hope will inspire and ignite our youth members. Within our Group and the larger Scouting community, we are like proud parents and grandparents at times. In many Scouting forums you will often find us proudly displaying articles, pictures and posts of our youth members and/or Leaders either having amazing fun or being recognised for their hard work, community spirit, bravery or dedication.

During the past holidays there was certainly a lot for us to be proud of. Many of our dedicated youth and Leaders gave freely of their time to volunteer at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Talk about being inspired and ignited! The games motto ‘Share the Dream’ was well and truly taken to heart with many members of this fantastic Association, and it was heart warming to see posts about our up and coming youth briefing royalty, assisting athletes or members of the public and doing whatever is needed.

While opportunities this big come around rarely, we encourage our members to contribute to the communities they live in on an ongoing basis. Thinking local to global, we teach our youth to think about how their actions - no matter how small - can impact on the greater community and even on a world wide scale. Helping out at the local tree planting, picking up litter around our Lake, helping other groups in our community to set up events, raising funds for RSPCA, visiting local care facilities. While these may not seem as glamorous or ‘big’ as helping out at the Games, it is sometimes the little things in life that have the biggest impact. Every single person, every day, has the ability to change the world around them. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi. “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”

When I started my Scouting journey 25 years ago, little did I realise the impact it would have on me. The opportunities for growth and personal development aside, through the years I have shed more than a tear or two of pride when watching how our youth members grow, develop and succeed. Parents thank us because they have seen such a huge change in the confidence, skills and maturity of their child. Who knows who that somebody might grow up to be? Many successful and famous people were once Scouts. These moments are what make the sacrifices of time and effort truly worthwhile. These are the priceless moments and the reason we Leaders keep going.

Priceless moments in April ~ • Spending time with our Scouts as they completed their Air Activities Target and watching their faces as they took a flight in the light aircraft was amazing.

• Accompanying some of our Group members and supporting them during auditions for an upcoming Scout Revue was eye opening.

• Encouraging our Leaders as they completed their Basic Practical training weekend or the first stage in their Abseiling training.

• The pride felt while watching our Group of youth members and the wonderful Leaders supporting them, as they all proudly marched in the Inala ANZAC March, and then hearing about the time they spent together doing a bike hike to earn their Bicycle badges following the march.

• Traveling out to Jondaryan Woolshed for a sneak peek at the 2018 season Brisbane Gang Show that our Rover Lucas is involved in was entertaining.

• Watching some of our youth members Darcee, Annaliese and Tamara being recognised at the Lions Children of Courage Awards for their bravery and determination was humbling.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling Windaroo Lakes was the venue for the Clubs April game played on the 8th April. Rain fell on the way to the course but cleared away for a beautiful morning. As you would expect, the course was pretty damp with some long grass in the rough and wet fairways, making play interesting! Nevertheless, there were a few great scores returned from the 28 players attending.

Our prizewinners for Windaroo Lakes were: A Grade - winner Greg Robson with 37 points, and Gil Vargas Runner-up on 31 points.

B Grade– winner Sokhom Hok with 42 points, and Dave Chettle Runner-up on 34 points.

The Long Drive experts were Don Pickwick (A), Phil King (B) and Kirrily Brooke (Ladies).

Nearest the pin winners were Dan McKay (5th and 7th holes), Alan Frost (11th hole), and the nearest approach winners were Mick Morley (6th hole) and Gil Vargas (14th hole).

Our Bradman award went to Don Mitchell with a very meritorious 15 points.

Congratulations to all of the prizewinners on the day.

What a fantastic time to be a proud Queenslander and live in the Forest Lake Ward! April saw so many locals volunteering at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and taking an active part.

Big shout out to Julie McDonald OAM, our local resident and swimming legend who was chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton at Southport, and everyone else who took part. I was cheering loud and proud – you can be sure you’ve made our community very proud.

In keeping with the nautical theme the new play equipment at Wivenhoe Circuit will no doubt bring under the sea to life above ground. I look forward to keep delivering and working with the community to bring more play equipment to the area.

As the proud patron of the Forest Lake Wasps Junior Rugby Union Club, I’m pleased to announce that new shade covers have been installed over the play equipment. I’m committed to ensuring we use our public space in line with being Sun Smart.

I’m regularly approached by locals who say we need a dedicated place at The Lake Parklands precinct that allows visitors to sit down for a picnic and enjoy the beautiful sunsets and the wildlife. A family picnic area next to the Amphitheatre Forest Lake RSL memorial will be finished by the end of June. Thank you to everyone that has been patient in waiting for this picnic area to be finished.

A huge happy 1st birthday to the Forest Lake Community Markets and a special round of applause to founders and coordinators Robyn and Kylie, stallholders and volunteers. I’ve had the pleasure of attending all markets to date and am delighted to buy local. The markets really bring the community together and I’m pleased so many joined in to celebrate.

With the ibis breeding season approaching, I would like to reassure the community that council officers and I will keep working together to ensure the management plan continues to reduce the ibis population at The Lake Parklands, and that additional ibis-proof litter bins will be installed in due course.

An additional management plan has been put in place to make sure the blue green algae that can been seen in certain spots around the lake is being treated with a product call Eco Clear. Council officers have advised they have seen promising results since treatment started last year. In light of this, I’m delighted to see so many fingerlings and the freshwater wildlife flourishing. If you are interested in finding out more I encourage you to contact my office.

Family Focus with Mark Mackay

May is always a special month in our home – we have a few birthdays for family members and friends and it’s also Mother’s Day. I have been blessed by a wonderful mum who was a rock in my life growing up. Now, my children are blessed to have a wonderful mum, who I also get to call my wife.

It’s important we celebrate Mother’s Day and acknowledge their special contribution in our lives. For many, it’s one of our most cherished phrases, “G’day Mum.” For those of us who have been blessed with having good relationships with our mums, it is a day for thanking them and thanking God for them.

However, we should also acknowledge that there are many for whom Mother’s Day is a sad day. For those who haven’t had a good relationship with their mother, this day can be a harsh reminder of some painful memories. Alternatively, for those who have lost their mother, it can be a day of sadness and mourning. For these two groups, it’s not a day for pretty greeting cards but honest, authentic community.

But another group that I think often gets overlooked are those women who are mums in our lives but to whom we’re not biologically related. In the church in which I grew up, there was an older lady, Anna, who was like that. She had known me from infancy, encouraged me, disciplined me when I needed it and prayed for me.

We all need people in our lives to guide us, encourage us and correct us. In their book, “Parenting Beyond Your Capacity,” Reggie Joiner & Carey Nieuwhof give some sage advice to “widen your circle.” In other words, to not try to raise kids just on your own but to widen the circle of trusted people to guide your families. This isn’t new advice but draws upon the old maxim, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

The Bible casts a vision of older people mentoring and guiding younger people – that’s the vision for the community of the church. It was never the intent for us to be siloed away in our own homes but to be part of a village.

Consider your family. How could you widen your circle so that you can be supported and support others?

May God bless you and your family as you seek to invest in others and as you seek the investment of others.

Canine anal gland disease

Anal glands are small sacs just under the skin on either side of your dog’s anus. They connect to the anus by means of small canals or ducts and produce a very smelly discharge that is released through these ducts.

Dogs have anal glands for the following reasons: The smell from the sacs has a role in territorial marking in wild animals. Wild dogs rub their bottoms on vertical structures such as trees to spread their scent. This behaviour is not commonly seen in domestic pets.

The sacs are often partly emptied as the dog goes to the toilet. This may also help with territorial marking.

The smell helps in social recognition between dogs, which may be why they sniff each other’s bottoms!

The sacs are also emptied when the dog is frightened, similar to the behaviour shown by a skunk to scare away its enemies. Some believe that this may have been the original purpose of the anal sacs.

If you see your dog scooting along on their bottom, it means they have some type of irritation around their rear end. This can be due to fleas, dermatitis or occasionally tapeworms, but the most common reason is anal gland disease cause by impaction, overproduction, infection or tumour growth.

If an impaction causes infection, pus or blood will be seen. Your dog or cat may also lick its bottom and show other signs of pain. Left untreated, the sacs can rupture and an abscess will develop around the anus. This will be seen as a red painful swelling, often with an open sore at the centre. Swelling can also indicate tumour growth which normally can be excluded during an examination.

Sometimes dogs will leave a foul-smelling drop of liquid where they have been sitting. Some dogs are born with anal ducts that do not close well, resulting in a constant discharge of anal sac fluid, and a recurrent bad smell!

Impacted anal sacs can be emptied by your vet and this will usually solve the problem. In some cases, the problem can recur and repeated emptying is needed. Sometimes the secretion is too thick to squeeze out or it may be too painful. In such cases, the sacs may have to be emptied under anaesthetic or removed.

Infections will respond to antibiotics but abscesses will often need cleaning up under anaesthetic and treated with antibiotics and pain killers.

Prevention can be diffi cult but regular emptying, bulking up the stool with fibre and surgical removal are options.
