Monthly Update

by Les Brooks

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club’s activity program for 2018 was circulated to all our members at the Club’s Christmas Party held last December. The Club has another awesome year of monthly activities ahead of us, with new and exciting venues such as our eagerly awaited Sea World day trip scheduled for May. The Club’s first meeting of the year was held on Friday 19th January, with our usual excellent attendance. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club Inc. is a local community based organisation that was formed over 24 years ago for people in the over 50 age group living in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs. The club offers an avenue for members to make new friends and become part of an active group of likeminded people who enjoy their leisure time. Our club is not affiliated with any other club or organisation, however, we do support some community ‘not-for-profit’ groups. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at The Lion, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next three meetings are 9th February, 16th March (AGM) and 20th April. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on mob 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. New members are always welcome.

with Susannah Friis Self discipline: the ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it. Hands up if you find self discipline easy...yeah, mine’s not up either! Yet, the older I become, the more I realise that self-discipline is the key to so many things in life. We need to be self disciplined in a range of areas and in our current society, self discipline is simultaneously a dying art and an ever increasing necessity! When I think of the traditional example of self discipline namely physical fitness, the need for self discipline is obvious. But self discipline is just as pertinent to other areas of our lives as it is to whether we remain committed to the gym or our running partner or not. For me since making the decision to study, I have had to up the ante in my self discipline stakes. In particular, this past December/January when I chose to study one subject over the summer semester. Boy, that tested my level of self discipline! Sitting down to listen to a lecture, read the text book or conduct research when all other members of the household were still enjoying time in the pool or watching the tennis or a movie or...literally anything other than studying - was truly challenging. So what keeps us motivated when our self discipline is flagging? Of course, you know the answer - it’s how much we value what we’re trying to do, isn’t it? If I cared more about how my body looked, I’d probably be more diligent with exercise. If I want to maintain a healthy relationship with my husband, I’ll prioritise time spent with him over other things in life. If I want to have a garden without weeds, I have to be disciplined about pulling weeds out. If I want to pass my subjects, I need to put ‘bum in seat’ and get the work done because I value getting that degree at the end. As the definition above says - we need to pursue what we think is right despite the temptation to give up. And temptations seem even more accessible than ever in our world - we literally have the world at our fingertips; there are countless ways we can be pulled from our designated course and it’s alarmingly easy for it to happen! Our actions speak more loudly about what we value than our words ever could. It’s important to be regularly checking if our life lines up with our values. When I hear someone say how much they love their spouse and kids but you know that they spend only a fraction of time with them, you doubt their words. We always end up ‘doing’ what we really value, even if we think we don’t. If you want to know what you’re currently valuing, have a good look at what’s written in your calendar and it will soon become clear. And the good news? There’s always the opportunity to change the calendar and get back to the values you really want your life to reflect. Sure, it might take some self discipline but it’s worth it.

Forest Lake Area F

Garden Group

by John Prout Is it really the second month of 2018? It only seems like yesterday I was celebrating the New Year. Hard to believe it is now February with the school holidays over, credit cards due for all those Christmas presents we purchased and we have returned to work, unless retired, after an enjoyable and well-earned annul leave. What a great Christmas break-up we had as a club. The Baby Boomer Party band was a success with members getting up and joining in a conga line dance while a couple of others enjoyed a hula dance. The spit roast lunch was delicious. A full report and photographs are in this month’s newsletter aptly titled The Good Dirt. The first bus trip will be on 12 April as we visit Madura Tea Plantation and Ross Evans Nursery, both northern New South Wales. A flyer will be available at this month’s meeting. Presenting a bunch of cut roses is the traditional way of celebrating Valentine’s Day. As the cost for cut roses almost trebles at this time of the year, a potted rose plant that will live for many years is a far more appropriate way to acknowledge a long-lasting commitment. Red roses are always the number one choice for Valentine’s Day. Other roses available with Valentine-friendly names are Angel Face, Best Friend, My Hero, Seduction or Sentimental. I’m sure you will find the appropriate rose for your valentine. Hasn’t it been hot lately? There are some strappy leaves plants that are most useful in the garden when it comes to ‘beating the heat’. They’ve evolved to handle difficult conditions – such as drought, root competition, shade or hot sun – and they’re amazingly versatile in any landscape. Their upright growth, for example, will make vertical statements. They can be clumped together to form ground–covering layers, fill containers or be planted as defining borders. What are these plants? Examples are - Bird of Paradise, Agapanthus, any of the Kangaroo Paw variety, Lomandras (an incredibly tough Australian native), Ornamental grasses, Spider Lily, and Society Garlic (Tulbaghia spp) to mention a few. This month the guest speaker will be an agent from Rocky Point Mulching who will have bags of potting soil, mulch, garden soil etc. and will give us all the inside information on using their products. Next month Ann Blundell will be discussing potted plants. A full list of this year’s guest speakers will be in The Good Dirt. Why not come along and share the morning with fellow gardeners? Visitors are most welcome.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 6 February at 10am. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

We are here X

We are located in Grand Boulevard Shopping Centre Young Forest Lake locals and soccer fanatics are excited to this year be playing in the SAP 1 program run at local clubs that is a key component of the Football Federation Australia’s National Curriculum. The boys, Ryan, Ajaiveer and Xavier, all St John’s Anglican College students, play with Western Pride and train three nights a week, with a game on Saturdays. All boys are fully committed to the sport and play soccer any chance they can get with many lunchtimes spent playing and refining their skills. Designed to accelerate the skills of players between nine and 13, the SAP program maximises this universally known optimal mental and physical phase of motor skill development and is the highest level of training in Australia for this age group. Due to the high technical nature of the program and emphasis on quality coaching, there are only a select amount of clubs that can offer the program in Southeast Queensland. For Ryan, Ajaiveer and Xavier, acceptance into the SAP program was reliant on their ability to perform with high proficiency in four key core skills. Acceptance into the program gives the boys a year of high quality coaching designed to develop their skills to an elite level. His second time in the program, ten year old Ryan has soccer in his blood with dad Rogier having played for the last 25 years as well as coaching younger teams. “There’s a joke in our family that Ryan was born with a ball at his feet, said Rogier. “But essentially he’s been playing his whole life having started out at Grasshopper Soccer when he was three years old. In Xavier’s family, he’s the inspiration for little brother Zy who is currently training under Ryan’s dad and hopes to follow in his brothers footsteps in two years when he’s eligible for the SAP program. Not all the boys are from soccer families with eight year old Ajaiveer differing from his family in his interest. “In our family, he is the one passionate about soccer, said Ajaiveer’s mum Sandy. “The rest of us are cricket fans! We wish Ryan, Ajaiveer and Xavier all the best for their soccer journey and look forward to hearing of their success in the future ~ Editor.

Community Markets return this month

The popular community markets that began in April 2017, return for the year with the first being held on 18th February from 8am - noon at Forest Lake State High School on Forest Lake Boulevard. Growing from 50 stalls to over 80 each month, there is a wide variety of products ranging from clothing, jewellery, timbers items, plants, gifts as well as fresh bread and cakes and various food stalls. With free activities for children including face painting and a jumping castle sponsored by Forest Lake Hotel, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the markets. Plenty of car parking along High Street and surrounds and complete wheelchair accessibility ensures a stress free start with even the four-legged family members welcome to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the stalls. “The markets have been a wonderful addition to the Forest Lake community,” said organiser Kylie. “Local residents look forward to attending each month, meeting friends and having a wander through the many stalls and the friendly atmosphere the markets bring.” For those wanting to be a bit more active, Snap Fitness Forest Lake provide a free Zumba session from 8-9 each month. Organisers are grateful for support from MTR Property Group who sponsored corflute signage as well as Heritage Bank Forest Lake Branch who recently approved a grant to assist with the purchase of new table and chairs and a full trailer refurbishment and flag banners. “For six months last year, Ray White Forest Lake sponsored an animal farm for the kids. We really thank the support of local businesses and will be looking for more support this year,” said Kylie. “We are also on the search for local talent for busking and main entertainment.” The Community Market organisers can be contacted by sending an email to forestlakecommunitymarket@gmail.

Forest Lake Shopping Centre supports expanded Foodbank pantry Forest Lake’s Lighthouse Community and Event Centre has expanded its support of the local Foodbank program thanks to the donation of a Polar 1200 litre, double door freezer from Forest Lake Shopping Centre. As part of their commitment to supporting the community, the shopping centre has made donations of more than $7000 to worthwhile local causes this year as part of their Big Hearts campaign. Foodbank - Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation – provides food assistance to more than 650,00 Australians each month. It acts as a giant kitchen pantry, redirecting food and groceries away from landfill and into the kitchens of the people who need it most. Foodbank provided enough food for more than 63 million meals in 2016. Joshua Avia at the Lighthouse Community and Event Centre describes it as a space to serve and support the community. “The freezer from Forest Lake Shopping Centre means that we can store and share perishable items and cold goods with the people we support,” he said. “Previously, because we had no way to store milk, meat and frozen food, our Foodbank hampers didn’t include these essential items. The shopping centre’s generous donation means we can provide a more comprehensive package to those accessing the Foodbank service.” “Our Big Hearts campaign is a tangible way for us to give back to our local community,” said Forest Lake Shopping Centre Marketing Manager, Linda Loosley. “We’re on track to give away $20,000 to support local projects and causes by the end of the financial year.”

The pancreas is a pale pink glandular organ that lies just under the stomach and along the duodenum. As a glandular organ, the pancreas is all about secretion and it has two main jobs. The first job is the secretion of digestive enzymes to help break down food and the second job is the secretion of insulin and glucagon to regulate sugar metabolism. The digestive enzymes are the part of the story that concerns us in pancreatitis. In pancreatitis, inflammation disrupts the normal integrity of the pancreas. Digestive enzymes that are normally safely stored in granules are released prematurely where they digest the body itself. The result can be a metabolic catastrophe. The living tissue becomes further inflamed and the tissue damage quickly involves the adjacent liver. Toxins released from this severe tissue destruction are released into the circulation and can cause a body-wide inflammatory response. If the pancreas is affected so as to disrupt its ability to produce insulin, diabetes mellitus can result. Depending on the damage, this can be either temporary or permanent. The causes of pancreatitis can be complex but are related to altered fat metabolism. Sometimes it is just a fatty meal that can be the trigger for an attack. Other cases are linked to underlying metabolic disorders such as Hypothyroidism and Cushing’s Disease and some genetic causes of altered fat metabolism that are peculiar to certain breeds. Some drugs can influence the development of pancreatitis. The classic signs in dogs are appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhoea, painful abdomen, and fever. Suspicion of pancreatitis is confirmed by blood tests and sometimes ultrasound. Treatment of severe cases normally involves hospitalisation, IV fluids and supportive treatment till patients are able to eat. Prevention strategies are important as repeated attacks of pancreatitis will lead to maldigestion and diabetes mellitus. Low fat diets and correcting any underlying disease is essential for long term good health.

FROM THE DESK OF

COUNSELLING

Councillor Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor

January was a busy month in Forest Lake with many wonderful community celebrations and lots of council work being scheduled for 2018. I would like to welcome the new Forest Lake State School Principal Ms Deb Hansen. My priority this year is to continue to work with Forest Lake State School and St Johns Primary to finalise the Traffic Management Plan to make schools a safer place for dropping off and picking up our kids. Drivers, please remember to obey all parking signs (including signage at the school) and that parking on yellow lines or in front of driveways is prohibited. Brisbane City Council, Forest Lake State School and St John’s Anglican College and I are committed to ensuring the Traffic Management Plan is successful. If you have any questions contact me at the Forest Lake Ward office. For lovers of books, the new mobile library calendar is available online or at my ward office. Otherwise, the mobile library stops weekly (excluding public holidays) at the Forest Lake Shopping centre opposite Australia Post every Tuesday from 9.30-4pm. There’s more than 500 books available and activities for all ages including children’s story times and free digital literacy training. A job well done to the new Carole Park swim centre manager Steven and the team for organising a fantastic free Australia Day BBQ. Their event was a hit with local families! I’d encourage residents to enrol in their swimming classes or simply visit the pool to cool off. For more information, please give Steve a call on 3271 6116. I’ve always been passionate about keeping our area clean and tidy and have been in talks with the BCC recently. I’m delighted to report that for the next few months, council teams will be removing dead and dying trees across the Forest Lake Ward. This project is extremely important for safety reasons with the storm season still in swing. I thank the many residents who continue to contact my office for your wonderful feedback and sharing your concerns. I look forward to seeing you around the ward, otherwise, please contact me for a friendly chat at the Forest Lake ward office on 3407 1211.

Tax time may seem like a long way away, after all, we have only recently passed the half-way point of the financial year. However, rather than panic in the last week of June to get your tax affairs in order, here is a shortlist of some matters to bear in mind, particularly in the capital gains tax area. • Remember that substantiation and justification are critical. Better to keep too much rather than too little, so in the meantime, place all those receipts that may be relevant in an envelope so they can be easily reviewed later. Also, photocopy those receipts that are likely to fade over time and annotate straight away with details, for instance, why you incurred the expense. • For those of you who are thinking of acquiring an investment property, don’t forget to arrange for a depreciation and capital allowance report, assuming the property is one which will be eligible in terms of construction dates. The tax deductible cost will likely be recouped several times over in just the first year, not to mention the ongoing impact in subsequent years. • If you have two assets performing in opposite directions, one likely to incur a capital loss and the other a capital gain, please recognise the importance of timing and sequence of disposal. You don’t really want to sell the good performing asset in a tax year before the poor performing investment. Whilst you can carry capital losses forward as an offset against a future gain, the reverse is not true. Sell the good one first and the poor one next year and you may have a loss which is more of academic interest rather than having a tangible economic value. • If you are thinking of moving out of the family home and then renting it out while moving into your dream home, obtain a proper valuation of the property. Any potential gain on the former home will be based on the value at the date it becomes income producing, not on a time apportioned basis between acquisition and disposal. • Be aware of the impact of ‘lumpy’ capital gains on certain income thresholds. For example, the means tested private health fund rebate could be impacted if a capital gain puts you into a different income tier by only one dollar. Hope the above provides some helpful hints.

Forest Lake Lions Club update by Michael Janz In 2018, the Lions Club of Forest Lake celebrates of 25 years of service to our community. Over these years you’ve probably seen the Forest Lake Lions conducting barbecues and running stalls at a range of local events like the Easter Carnival, the monthly Forest Lake Community Markets and Carols by Candlelight. People also identify Lions with the sales of Christmas cakes and puddings. The Lions are much more than that! Every year this group of service-minded men and women work actively towards improving our Forest Lake Community. With the valued support of the Forest Lake Heritage Community Bank and Forest Lake Community House, we donate thousands of dollars annually to support local causes. This year would be a great time to become a Lions club member. Here’s five reasons why you should: 1. Your community needs you The Lions Club of Forest Lake wants to contribute to a stronger, healthier, happier Forest Lake community. As a member and volunteer supporting our work, you will help build your community and help others. Whether it’s helping out on ANZAC Day or supporting the annual Lions Youth of the Year and visiting the Forest Lake Lodge on Mother’s Day, you are that friendly person who helps a real difference in your community. 2. You’ll make friends and build strong relationships You will work and play alongside people from all walks of life with different personalities, ages, skill sets, backgrounds, interests, careers and stories- all united by the desire to do all the good they can! Connecting with people who share your passion for a cause or social issue creates a path to developing strong relationships with others. 3. You’ll learn a lot and feel good about yourself Being a Lions Club member and volunteering can take you outside your comfort zone, unveiling strengths you never knew existed and boosting your confidence and self-esteem. Having new experiences can help you discover a new passion, and working alongside others with diverse skills sets will help you gain the skills and contacts to pursue that passion. 4. Volunteering is good for your career Becoming a Lion exposes you to a variety of skill sets and experiences that you can turn into transferable skills, making you a more versatile, attractive employee. Lions is dedicated to developing our members’ leadership skills which can gain some valuable experience for your resume. 5. Volunteering gives you a sense of purpose As a Lion, you help raise funds to support those in need in our community. You can also play a role in helping to address local issues you feel strongly about. You can’t help to feel good about it! If you would like to find out about becoming a Forest Lake Lion, call Stuart Grierson on 0418 735 190. Let us know of any local needs that we could support. Connect with The Terraces and reap the rewards The Terraces at Forest Lake, a Lendlease Retirement Living retirement village, is endeavouring to connect their residents with their surrounding community. Along with making connections, the ‘Community Connect’ program is a fabulous way for people to understand village life. Better yet, local businesses are being rewarded for getting involved. Lendlease Retirement Living’s Community Connect program involves local organisations inviting fifteen or more members to village events. If these members attend the event, the organisation receives a $500 gift of gratitude for their participation. General Manager for Lendlease Retirement Living Queensland, Ann Holzer, said, “The Community Connect program is an initiative we are incredibly proud of. It’s a fantastic way for potential residents to really understand what village life is all about.” In addition to the informational benefit, the Community Connect program gives back to the community financially. “When a community organisation takes part in the program, they receive a $500 prepaid credit card as a gift from us. We feel it’s very important for our villages to be directly involved in the communities that surround them. This is our way of connecting with and contributing to those communities,” Ms Holzer said. An example of the program’s success is that of Jindalee Bowls Club. The club took part in the program and put their $500 towards new bowls and new events to offer their members and the public. “After visiting The Terraces at Forest Lake, our club purchased new bowls for our evening barefoot bowls program and for our open day events”, Carol Cosgrove, Chairperson of Jindalee Bowls Club says. “Our members thoroughly enjoyed visiting the village and we have more members who want to take part on our next visit.” With more events on the horizon, Jindalee Bowls Club intends to put the next donation from The Terraces towards the development of their new ‘Jack Attack’ program, a short target game that will be hosted in the evening. Moving into a retirement village is a decision that should be a well informed one. This program gives potential new residents the opportunity to find out what they like or don’t like about The Terraces in Forest Lake, before they commit. With resort style facilities and rainforest setting, they often find it to be a very appealing option. It offers both relaxation and recreation in a spectacular location, with the convenience of inner-city living. If you’re a member of a local sporting club or community group Lendlease and The Terraces at Forest Lake would love to hear from you.

WE AR RE HER RE TO SUP PPO ORT OU UR CO OMM MUN NITTY The Terraces at Forest Lake wants to reward your local club with $500* Are you a member of a local sporting club or community group? If so, Lendlease would like to invite members from your group to The Terraces at Forest Lake as part of our Community Connect sponsorship program. Your club members can join us for an afternoon of complimentary refreshments and experience the positive life on offer at our over 55’s retirement village. Plus, simply by participating we will provide a $500* Visa gift card to your club. Jindalee Bowls Club used their reward to purchase new bowls for the ‘Fun with Friends’ Open Day, the new ‘Jack Attack’ program and evening barefoot bowls.

Family Focus

This year is an important one for Forest Lake Baptist Church, of which I am one of the pastors. It marks 20 years since our church was constituted. Our history goes back further than that, of course, to when Ron and Mary Linning first led a small group of people to begin this church. But 27 September 1998 was when we were formally recognised as a church. This anniversary has given me cause to consider the wider history of Forest Lake and the many community groups that will be celebrating similar anniversaries over coming years. As a neighbourhood, we are blessed by an amazing group of community groups and community-minded people. From sporting groups to friendship groups to charity groups to school communities to churches to many informal groups as well, we are blessed by wonderfully kind-hearted people. These are people who live with an attitude of gratitude – realising that to live here is a blessing, they share that blessing with others. There are few more important virtues to pass on to the next generation than this. By getting involved in community and service groups, we find friendships, opportunities to serve and precious moments when we experience the joy of sharing. We find that Jesus was right when He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) Of those 20 years of Forest Lake Baptist Church, I have had the privilege to pastor the church for 12 years and while there have been many joyful moments and blessings, one of the most significant blessings to me has been getting to know and interact with the many generous people and groups in Forest Lake. I thank God for Forest Lake Baptist Church and the impact the church has had in my life and family. I also thank Him for the blessing of being part of this wonderful community of Forest Lake. Table Tennis finds new Have you had a home in Forest Lake skin check lately?

Book your appointment today with Dr Ali (Accredited Skin Doctor) The local table tennis club is excited to this year find a new home at the Lighthouse Events Centre, on Woogaroo Street. The club which began in May last year, now has a membership of 40 with 12-16 players coming to enjoy the competition and friendly rivalry of the highly social sport each week. Playing each Wednesday from 7-8pm, those interested can either come on their own or with friends and find a spot at one of the eight professional tables for just $6. After three visits, players are required to become an annual member for $30, which covers the cost associated with insurance, maintenance and venue hire. Run by local residents who volunteer their time, the club is not for profit and is associated with Table Tennis Queensland and enjoys the support of local councillor Charles Strunk. “As a huge fan of table tennis and strong supporter of this popular social sport, I’m excited that the Forest Lake Table Tennis Association is up and running again for the new year,” said Cr Strunk. “Thanks must go to Gavin and his team, the Heritage Bank Forest Lake Branch and Pastor Joshua for helping making this fantastic sport available right here in Forest Lake.” If you love playing table tennis and are looking to be part of a fun social team contact Gavin on 0404 792 385.

New group up and running Local residents in Forest Lake are being invited to get involved with a new initiative that aims to encourage locals to walk or run 5km every Saturday morning or to pick up some new skills through volunteering. A team is being formed to kick start the regular runs, which will take place on Saturday mornings starting at the Forest Lake Sporting Fields after approval in principle was granted recently by Brisbane City Council. The runs operate on a charitable basis and therefore depend on volunteers. More volunteers will be required on a regular basis. Socially-focussed events with an emphasis on fun and fitness, parkruns are not races and are coordinated entirely by local volunteers. Open to everyone aged four and over, parkrun attracts people of all abilities. It is not a competition, with the emphasis on participation rather than performance. If you would be keen to make a valuable contribution to our local community whether you are a runner, a walker or neither, you would be welcomed and are urged to contact Shirley Wienand (shirleyjoanw@gmail.com) or Katrina Hingst (ksendall@hotmail.com), for more information. To find out more about the parkrun movement, go to www.parkrun.com.

FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

With 2018 now underway I’d like to wish a very happy Lunar New Year to our Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean Communities as we celebrate the Year of the Dog on February 16. People born in the Year of the Dog are said to possess the best traits of human nature. They are honest, friendly, faithful, loyal, smart, straightforward, and have a strong sense of responsibility. The school year has also just begun and we send our best wishes to all students who are returning to school. For Prep students it will be the first time they’ve entered the school gates, while Grade 6 students will find themselves in their last year of primary school. Year 7 students will begin their high school journey and for year 12’s it will be the final year of schooling before heading off to further study, work or perhaps even some time abroad. We have wonderful schools throughout the Oxley electorate with hardworking teachers and staff who do a tremendous job. Late last year it was a privilege to welcome the Federal Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten to our community and showcase our fantastic local schools. To ensure every child is given the quality education they deserve, it’s important that schools are given the appropriate resources they need. When I visit schools throughout the electorate, I’m constantly told about the importance of needs-based funding. Principals, teachers and parents all tell me about the big difference this makes for students and how critical it is. Every dollar makes a difference and I’ll be working to see that each and every Oxley school is given the funding it needs. If you would like to share your story about how needs-based funding is making a difference to your school or child, please contact my office on 3879 6440 or send me an email Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au. I look forward to visiting schools throughout the year and working closely with principals and teachers. Good luck to all students for a great 2018.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach

A New Year to get into gear and the Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc wishes all a safe and healthy year and may you all successfully achieve your New Year Resolutions and reach your goals. The first speaker of the year was the inspirational and amazing Stephen Dale whose topic was also the title of his bestselling book Bouncing Back When You Hit Rock Bottom. It was a peek into his remarkable life. Bullied and bashed at school for four years, Stephen took refuge in alcohol, drugs and self-harm. When he finished school, he left Brisbane because he blamed the city for all his problems. He thought life would be better in another state and tried quite a few before ending up in Melbourne where he landed a job at Clancy’s Restaurant working in the bar, in spite of his alcohol addiction. One day two friends invited him along to join them on a trip to Philip Island but there was to be no taking of alcohol or drugs. Throughout his young life, he always felt he was being judged, except for his grandfather who accepted him as he was. Arriving at Philip Island, he wanted to climb the cliff and then jump off. He was twenty one years old at the time. He slipped and literally bounced down the cliff face. Stephen suffered horrific major head and spinal injuries, multiple heart attacks, critical blood loss and severe internal organ damage. His two friends didn’t stop giving him CPR until medical help arrived. He spent five days in a coma and during this time his family was informed that should Stephen survive, he would have debilitating injuries and may spend a lifetime dependant on the welfare of others. He lost 45kg in the first week and spent almost a year in four different hospitals, having multiple operations, unbearable pain and countless setbacks. He suffered total cognitive dysfunction. He had lost the ability to read, write or speak, lived in constant pain and was unemployable. The basic skills that he once took for granted, were replaced with fear, humiliation and failure. Despite all the obstacles, he realised that if he focused on only making “one choice at a time” and committing to one change at a time, he would eventually experience “one success at a time”. His grandfather was there, never judgemental and told him he was loved. He needed to hear that. Since 2002 Stephen’s story and presentation has been engaged by multi-national businesses, executives, sport clubs, universities and schools throughout Australia. His message to the Club was that there are individual challenges for each of us and to evaluate our choices, change behaviour and rise above the obstacles to reach our goals, whatever they may be and to do something and keep smiling. What an incredible tale of survival and turning his life around! Probus is a Club for retirees and semi-retirees for fun, friendship and fellowship where monthly speakers ‘educate’ and inspire us like Stephen. We also enjoy monthly outings or activities as well as a Book Group, a Dinner group and a Coffee morning group. Come and visit us when we meet on the second Tuesday of the month at the Uniting Church Hall in Waterford Road, Ellen Grove at 10am. For more details please contact Membership Officer Judith on 3278 8042 or President Frances on 0403 882 030. Page 22 - February 2018 - The Lake News

Forest Lake Magpies Club Update by Communications Officer, Tammy Davis. Firstly, I would like to introduce you to the new Club President...Graham ‘Skippy’ Davis. Skip (as he is affectionately known by most people) has been a parent/coach at the club for the past three years. Previous to this he was a parent/coach at another rugby league club for three years. He is also a qualified touch judge and league safety and first aid officer. Skip has great vision for the club and has many ideas on how to move the club to be bigger and better. These things will only come to fruition however, with a great support team. This team includes a vice president, treasurer, secretary, registrar, canteen convener, a communications officer as well as ‘general’ committee members. General committee members are those people that would like to be more involved in the club by giving ideas, helping make decisions etc, without having a specific responsibility. This team however, is currently lacking a few members, namely secretary, registrar, a canteen convener and general committee members. All of these positions are extremely important in the successful running of the club. These positions will not take up too much of your time on a week to week basis and, speaking from experience, it is very rewarding helping out at the club your child is involved in. The most important part of our club, of course, is the players. Sign on day for the 2018 season will be held on Sunday, 4th February, between 10am and 2pm at the club. We hope to see you all pop in to be a part of the Forest Lake Magpies for another season. If you are re-registering you can do that online from home if you prefer by visiting playnrl.com.au and follow the prompts. Ideally you will have your password from last season. Training starts up on Tuesday 6th February and is every Tuesday and Thursday night at 1449 Boundary Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information contact Skip at admin@forestlakeJRLFC,com.au or on 0409 199 437. We look forward to the new season, to seeing our old players return and welcoming lots of new families.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update by Alan Greig We trust our readers enjoyed their Christmas with relatives and friends. Whilst a little late (who said better late than never?), we hope our readers enjoyed the New Year celebrations. Funny how they come around each year, isn’t it? January 1st means that our members are looking forward to working productively with our members of BCC Council and both State and Federal politicians as well as with our very generous sponsors without whom we would find it very difficult to operate. Doubtless you have seen our specially designed trailer going from location to location. This would not be possible without the generosity of the Heritage Bank Community Fund. This unique trailer is a self contained unit with its own generator, gas containers, BBQ and refrigerator to keep soft drinks cold. It can be driven into a location and set up within a few minutes and when we’ve finished, it is dismantled and driven out to await our next request. The funds raised are put to good use within our community. Our Club spends about $500 each year purchasing new wool for our associated knitting club to knit booties, beanies and other goods for new born babies, children and our elderly. Thus I am asking any reader who may have some spare wool laying around in cupboards to let me know (3271 3358) and I will call around to collect it. Being small in numbers we can always use assistance at our sausage sizzles and particularly at the Citizenship Ceremonies that we help facilitate. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know. Better still, if you would like to join our Club you would be most welcome. It is not well known but Rotary International has been working for years to eradicate polio throughout the world. This goal has almost been reached. We have one or two countries that still suffer from the effects of polio and this may be accomplished in 2018. Our Club, in its small way, contributes funds each year to help this goal to be met. Keep an eye out for this achievement to be announced in the major media sometime in 2018. If you’re interested in joining Rotary or have some wool to donate, please contact Alan on 3271 3358 or send an email to alan_greig@bigpond.com.

Free booklet for young people about online safety A free booklet is educating young people about their legal rights and responsibilities when using social media, and how to stay safe online. The Cyber bullying, Sexting and Facebook: Know the law, know your rights booklet is helping young people to better understand the legal consequences of their online behaviour and where to get help if they need it. “Young people often don’t realise cyber bullying is a crime, or that they can be charged with an offence for possessing or forwarding naked or partially naked photos of someone aged 18 or younger,” Legal Aid Queensland lawyer David Law said. “Educating young people about what the law says about cyber bullying and sexting, how to prevent your personal photos getting into the wrong hands, and where to get help if you need it will support young people to make informed choices to better protect their online safety.” The booklet can be downloaded or ordered for free from the Legal Aid Queensland website www.legalaid.qld.gov.au. South West Brisbane Stamp Club Update by Marius, South West Brisbane Stamp Club

Thematic collecting - the best of both worlds! A popular form of stamp collecting is known as thematic or topical stamp collecting. This is where a person will collect a certain subject on stamps rather than a particular country. Many times this subject may pertain to one of their other hobbies or interests. For example, a person who plays golf or tennis may collect stamps that portray that interest. You could be a civil engineer and collect stamps that portray bridges and buildings of particular construction types. The list is endless. Many people exhibit their collections and win medals for their achievements. I can recall one well received exhibit entitled “Bountiful Orbs Of Beauty” By the acronym you can guess the subject of this exhibit (all very tasteful of course). So you can see that whatever other sport, hobby, work or leisure interest you have, you can combine it with your stamps and enjoy both interests even more. At the South West Brisbane Stamp Club, we more than welcome you to attend and we can help you with expert advice on how to build that collection. Whether you are an experienced collector or a newcomer to the hobby please come down to one of our monthly meetings of which the details are in the hobbies section at the back of this publication or contact me, Marius, on 0410 366 685.

centenary evening VIEW club update The first dinner meeting of the Centenary Evening VIEW Club for 2018 will be on Monday 12 February. Meetings are held at the McLeod Country Golf Club, 61 Gertrude McLeod Cres, Middle park. Cost is $35 and bookings are essential. This meeting will also include the AGM which is a wonderful opportunity to hear about all the exciting things the ladies have enjoyed throughout the previous year, and also hear about some of the activities and entertainment that is planned for the coming year. If you would like to be part of a group of women of all ages, who meet monthly for dinner and also enjoy coffee mornings, lunches and various outings, and where the focus is on fun and friendship, then look no further than Centenary Evening VIEW Club. Fund raising activities range from bring and buy stalls and tucker tables to ‘Girls Nights’, Melbourne Cup lunch and various other events including Christmas gift wrapping. All money raised goes to The Smith Family to support six students through the Learning for Life program. For more information or if you would like to attend email centenaryeveview@gmail.com or ring Di 3202 9759 before noon Friday 9 February.

New Toastmasters club opens in Oxley A new Toastmasters Club, called Mad Chatters is being formed in nearby Oxley to cater to residents in the Oxley, Inala and Forest Lake district. If you’ve wanted to improve your speaking skills and have decided 2018 is the year to do it, why not get along to a meeting being held at the CWA Hall in 80 Lincoln Street, Oxley on 5th February from 7-8pm. Toastmasters International, in operation since 1924, is a popular and proven way of providing tools, resources and support for anyone wanting to gain confidence and a greater speaker ability. By joining an established community of learners, you’ll be given opportunities and guidance to speak confidently in a range of circumstances including public speaking and even just one-on-one interactions. From beginners to advanced speakers, everyone is welcomed at Toastmasters meetings where members practice giving prepared speeches as well as impromptu presentations, known as Table Topics. There’s no rush and no pressure - the Toastmasters program allows members to progress at their own pace. Constructive evaluation is central to the Toastmasters philosophy. Each time a prepared speech is given, an evaluator will point out strengths as well as suggest improvements. Receiving - and giving - such feedback is a great learning experience. In Toastmasters, encouragement and improvement go hand-in-hand. With over 332 000 members worldwide, Toastmasters is a tried and true way to become more capable and confident in your work life in areas such as networking and negotiating, and increase your skills interacting in your personal life and encouraging others such as your children and family to be more confident too. So why not give yourself a confidence boost this year by joining the Mad Chatters and learn how to communicate more effectively with those around you in every sphere of your life. Send an email to Dee at madchatters-vppr@toastmastersclubs.org for more information or to register your interest in attending the meetings held on the first and third Monday of every month.

RICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDATE BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

February already. Seems like only yesterday we were throwing ourselves into preparations for 2018 and the fantastic year ahead. I don’t know about everybody else but January always seems to be a bit of a blur for me, between the Christmas pack down, school preparations and our Aussie Day celebrations - not to mention the sweltering heat! January is also the time our older Scouts jump back into things with a passion. Some of our Scouts took the initiative to research, plan and enjoy a day out at Southbank, visiting the Cultural Centre before heading into the pool for a cool down. Meanwhile, one of our Venturers - Connor - took part in the 17th Australian Venture. By all reports, he really enjoyed the Get a Grip Expedition - canyoning, abseiling and rock climbing for five days around our beautiful South East Queensland countryside. Then it was back to Old Petrie Town to enjoy all of the onsite activities at the main Venture campsite. Water activities, hanging out and having fun - and setting the record for most crates stacked at AV2018. I can’t think of any better ways to make time fly by and we aim to keep planning and enjoying fun and adventurous activities for our youth members over the coming months, starting when we return next week. Have you considered Scouting for your child? Contact Rosella on 0402 308 182 or check out our facebook page Richlands - Forest Lake Scout Group.
