The first Bus outing organised by the two new Activities Officers viz. Judy and Barry featured the unusual combination of colonial history and racing. Perhaps this signifies some interesting outings and combinations from Judy and Barry?? Accompanying the Probians on this trip were two special guests: President of National Seniors Dan Baldwin and Secretary of same Julie Baldwin who are always welcome. Our first disembarkation was Newstead House, Brisbane’s oldest surviving Residence and an iconic landmark. It is situated on the Breakfast Creek bank of the Brisbane River and dates back to 1845. After a brief history of the House and its surrounds, we were left on our own to wander through the building and the grounds. It was then back on the bus to lunch at Gallopers and the Doomben Race Course, where Karen Best, daughter of racing legend, and Kerry Woodlock, President of The Thoroughbred Racing History Association, took us in hand en tour of all the facilities and explained racing in Queensland and the workings of the Industry. We were shown a video of the famous horse Bernborough and allowed to touch and even hold the Doomben Cup! The June speaker was Belinda Marsden-Smedley, Community Relations Officer of QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. She touched briefly on the Institute’s seventy year research program. Its horizon’s were widened upon the return of soldiers from World War Two. Some brought unknown diseases and, of course, problems they experienced through the horror of war. This created a demand for new fields of research whilst still continuing with their present work. Currently the Institute concentrates on three major areas of research. Cancer occupies fifty percent of the work and the balance is divided between infectious diseases and mental health and complex disorders. Belinda gave a brief coverage of the research into cancer of which there are nineteen different types, as well as information on infectious diseases, mental health and complex disorders. Finally, Belinda emphasised the important research into immuno-therapy which will become the main way to treat cancer in the future. There was an amazing volume of information on health research but as so often is the case with interesting speakers on a topic close to our hearts, there is never enough time! Any young at hearts out there, come and join us on the second Tuesday of the month at 10am at the Forest Lake Hotel and see for yourself what a fine group of people Probians are and join in the fun. I’ve been thinking recently about prejudice and how it happens. You see, there is just blatant racism or prejudice for no sane reason whatsoever, and then there are prejudices that are based on a past experience that was negative. Tattoos used to be, and I say ‘used to be’ because it seems every man and his dog has a tattoo these days, the mark of people typically thought of as ‘dangerous’ or ‘tough’. If you’ve had a nasty encounter with someone who is covered in tattoos, chances are you’ll be wary of all people who are heavily tattooed and give them a wide berth. We are incredibly good at ‘tarring all feathers with the same brush’. What I’m trying to say is that sometimes, our prejudices can seem reasonable and in fact, are often understandable. But does that make them right? Here’s an example. Recently I spoke at a local club (you know who you are!) about the work of Destiny Rescue. One of the products for sale to help Destiny Rescue fund the work they do, is coffee beans. Many of the clubs and groups I speak to have members at the ‘wise’ end of life, and I have found that most people in this bracket don’t have coffee machines. So even though I have coffee listed as a product on my powerpoint presentation, I don’t usually mention it. Well, at this particular club I was asked about it and my response (unfortunately!) was that I didn’t talk about it because not many people in ‘this age group’ have at-home coffee machines. Oops! Seems that about a third of the group I was speaking to, do in fact have coffee machines at home! Didn’t I feel embarrassed. I had made an assumption - you might even say I was prejudiced! - based on my past experience, that was incorrect. So if we take that example and apply it to the rest of life, we can perhaps see where some of it is coming from. If a child is bitten by a dog, usually there will be some sort of fear and trepidation around dogs when the child is an adult. And it’s right and wrong at the same time. Yes, dogs can bite, as the child experienced, but it doesn’t mean that all dogs will bite. And it’s the same with people. Some people are mean, angry and aggressive - and sometimes those people have a different skin colour to us, have tattoos and shaved heads, might not be well educated, or dress well - but that doesn’t mean that all people who have different skin colour, tattoos, shaved heads, minimal education or less money to spend on clothes will be mean, angry and aggressive. So regardless of our prejudices, we may be able to see the reason behind it, but it’s never okay to stay that way. Each individual is just that - an individual. Shouldn’t we start treating them individually?

Are electric toothbrushes better than manual? The goal of daily oral hygiene procedures is to remove dental biofilm before it matures into plaque to prevent periodontal disease and decay. It has been proven that both manual and electric or battery powered toothbrushes are effective. Extensive research has gone into this field. The use of powered brushes is much better at removing the biofilm than manual brushing alone. There are several types of powered brushes and the research is inconclusive that one is better than the other. Different companies will quote studies that claim improvements for their brush over the competitors but in general they all do a much better job than manual brushes alone. Sonic brushes claim they can remove biofilm interproximally (between the teeth) more than rotary type brushes. This is not a clear cut result for them to be top toothbrush, as the best cleaning between teeth is with dental floss/tape or interdental brushes. There are many different types of battery or electric toothbrush from the top of the range Oral B Braun down to the battery powered simple brushes. The best brush is useless without being used but many people prefer to use a combination of manual and powered toothbrushes and this is often a good idea. It can sometimes be impractical to take the electric toothbrush on holidays, so a manual toothbrush is ideal for those times. One of the big advantages of the powered toothbrushes is the timer function. It has been shown many times that people believe they brush for at least two minutes but when they use a manual brush unless a timer is used it is usually about 45 seconds rather than two minutes. The timer function helps make sure people brush for at least two minutes. If people are used to a manual toothbrush, the excitement of using a powered brush usually leads to improved brushing times or more regular brushing due to the new technology. Most electric toothbrushes have different options for the cleaning heads and it is best to get the dental professional to recommend which one is best as it depends on what is the highest risk as to which head would be best. Sometimes it is up to personal choice as some heads are more comfortable to use and in the end it must be comfortable otherwise compliance and regular use won’t occur. All toothbrush heads should be replaced every three months (every season is a good way to remember) and this goes for manual brushes as well. The best manual toothbrush is one which has soft bristles and small head. Some come with tongue cleaners and most people find these annoying to use. If tongue cleaning is recommended by the dental professional then the stand alone type tongue cleaners are best.

Sport plays such an important role in encouraging students to develop healthy lifestyles through involvement in individual and team sports. From Prep to Year Three students St John’s students undertake a perceptual motor program prior to commencing the formal sporting program in Year Four. Our core physical education program from Year Four to Year 12 provides opportunities for students to acquire important physical and team skills so necessary beyond school. Participation in school sporting teams and individual pursuits builds self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and both team and leadership skills. When combined with the physical fitness derived from regular exercise these positive benefits can lead to strong academic achievement. Sport plays a vital role in the development of confident young leaders for the future.

BREAKING NEWS: Hannah Joye to represent Australia, Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014! (Old Collegian 2013)

Congratulations!

s

Hello Readers

n

St John’s Anglican College is a member of The Associated Schools (TAS) and Junior TAS inter-school sporting competitions, giving students the opportunity to compete in a variety of team sports in Saturday fixtures. Swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals encourage healthy inter-school competition, team work and good sportsmanship among like-minded schools. The senior campus facilities include a new fully equipped gymnasium, multi-purpose courts and a double oval, and the adjacent swimming and fitness center is used for a variety of activities. The lake is nearby and is used for kayaking and other water activities. The St John’s community would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Hannah Joye (2013 St John’s Old Collegian) on her selection for the Commonwealth Games, Track and Field Team. Hannah is one of only three Australian high jumpers selected to compete in the Games in Glasgow in July. She has been a strong participant in the St John’s Anglican College sporting program throughout her schooling, always with a positive attitude and an encouraging word for her peers. She has inspired many students to pursue track and field sports through her outstanding high jump ability and her capacity for diligent training and physical fitness. In her TAS Competition Sports and as a State and National level representative level, Hannah showed dedication and tenacity. As a St John’s graduate she is a delightful young person who is well equipped to be a leader in her field and to capably represent her country in the international sporting arena. Congratulations Hannah. Kind regards Suzanne Bain Head, St John’s Anglican College Kindy to Year 6 07 3372 0888 Years 7 to 12 07 3372 0111 www.stjohnsanglicancollege.com.au enquiries@sjac.qld.edu.au

SPECIAL DEAL L-R: Robyn Hulbert, Assistant State Commissioner Girl Guides Queensland; Lynne Ellwood, Former State Treasurer, Girl Guides Queensland; Kathryn Ellwood, Queens Guide Recipient; and Councillor Milton Dick from Richlands Ward. Local teen, Kathryn Ellwood, has recently completed the Queen’s Guide Award which is the Peak Achievement Award for youth members of Girl Guides Australia. Kathryn has spent time over many school holidays in activity planning and she was able to initialise her planned activities at Guide meetings with younger girls. Kathryn comes from a long line of Guides. Her mother Mrs Lynne Ellwood has been an Honorary Treasurer for Girl Guides Queensland. Kathryn, who started her Guiding when she was seven years old, has been surrounded by role models including Mrs Lynne Price who is a former Commissioner of both Girl Guides Queensland and Girl Guides Australia. With their support, Kathryn has enjoyably attended the unit meetings which are so important to the girls. In the past, Kathryn enjoyed Guiding because of the outdoor activities and the fact that she was able to do exciting and challenging things that many of her friends at school were unable to do. Camping was one of her favourite activities. Nowadays Kathryn is training to be a leader. She enjoys setting up activities for the girls to enjoy. She loves to observe and gently guide the way in which girls seek out new ideas and to listen to the challenges the girl’s face in today’s world. She also likes to assist them with problem solving activities. As Kathryn progresses through leadership, she hopes to complete programs and gain certificates within the Guiding Community. She plans to go to England when she finishes her degree at University and gain employment. Kathryn would love to be part of a Guide Unit whilst living in England and gain further life experience that will develop her skills, She will be able to use these for fresh ideas when she returns home. Grand Avenue State School were recently the very grateful recipients of 11 new books for their school library. Many of the books are new titles for the library. The books range from younger story books about a Racing Pigeon’s mission for the Army in World War II, to a story of the Australian Tracking Dogs in Vietnam, to older students historical stories of the Light Horse and Gallipoli’s Medals. They are all a valuable addition to the school library. The ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee of Queensland has given the local RSL’s book vouchers to distribute. Forest Lake RSL has chosen to pass these vouchers onto schools that have supported them through badge sales leading up to ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. The Grand Avenue State School community purchased close to 500 badges in the week leading up to ANZAC Day. Greg Amey, representing the Forest Lake RSL, came to the school last month to present the school with their books. When Greg arrived, he had some more book vouchers to give to the school; with these the school will purchase some big book kits for the library. Greg passed on the local RSL’s gratitude to the school for their support of the RSL’s fund raising ventures. Grand Avenue State School wish to thank the Forest Lake RSL for their generosity and look forward to continuing the long running relationship that they have with the Forest Lake RSL.

Date claimer: FLSS fete 13 September

Year 5 FLSS students are busy making craft items for the craft stall and can be seen here with bags made from a face washer, with a soap and poem enclosed. Forest Lake State School’s huge biennial fete is a much anticipated event in the Forest Lake community. This year the fete will be on Saturday 13th September, from 11am - 7pm. The day will also be an opportunity to celebrate the school’s 20th birthday with a huge day of fun, capped off with a great fireworks display. With all stalls run by the parents, students and teachers from the school, it will be a rare traditional fete where great homemade foods, crafts, and the old fashioned fun games will be available to enjoy. Children and parents alike love to have a go at the Toss a choc, bottle stall, and side show alley. Many parents from different cultures also make some mouth watering international foods alongside the fantastic steak burger stall where the Lions club pitch in and give a hand. There are rides for all ages and an animal farm, something for everyone. Show bags, fairy floss, popcorn and snow cones will be available, as well as a huge trash and treasure stall and lots of great second hand books. So why not come along and enjoy the fun, there are lots of school performances as well as local talents on our outdoor stage. Sit back and enjoy the entertainment while tasting the international foods, steak burgers or a cafe coffee. To further celebrate the school’s birthday, there will be a photo booth, so bring your family and friends and grab a picture. Money raised from this years fete will go towards installing chilled water troughs throughout the school. With summers getting hotter and with the kids running around the ovals for sports or lunch breaks, this will help cool them down and rehydrate faster. The last fete, in 2012, rose $48,000 and funded the building of a fantastic new playground for the students in the SEP (Special Education program). The current tuckshop is being extended to include a walk-in freezer with the funds raised from this fete. The tuckshop now caters for a healthier choice menu and convenor Ruth Ross makes various homemade and healthy menu items and can’t wait to have more space. Ride passes will be for sale soon via the schools online ordering system - flexi schools. If you would like more information on the fete or would like to lend a hand in any way please call Felicity on 0409 625 980.

The cool nights and lovely clear days of July make it a pleasure to spend time in the fresh air and our gardens, even with the occasional winter westerly winds blowing. However on a brighter note, the days are now becoming longer. Some of our plants may be dormant or slow growing but it’s good to see so many camellias and snowflakes out in bloom. Indoor plants can rapidly become dry in heated rooms. Do the ‘finger’ test to check if your plants, both indoors and outdoors, require watering. If the soil is moist – don’t water. When watering is necessary, it is best to water in the morning so as the plants can absorb the moisture before the sun sets. This is your last opportunity to reserve your seat on our upcoming South Coast & History bus tour on Saturday 19 July. We will be visiting Mudbrick Cottage & Herb Garden in Mudgeeraba and checking out the historic township of Tyalgum before enjoying a two course lunch at Flutterbes Cottage Café. On our return journey we will visit Chillingham and the Banana Cabana Fruit Barn and Bush Tucker Gardens with a guided tour around the orchard. If you have not booked or require a flyer please contact Jill (phone 3372 6822) or Heather (phone 3879 2129). Remember lunch and morning tea are included in the fare of $50 for club members and $55 for guests. One job we must not forget to do this month is to check our lawn for bindii. This painful weed, especially when you stand on it bare-footed, is currently in the early stages of growth. Spray with a bindii organic spray to eliminate them from your lawn. It is now a good time to dig in some manure or compost into your garden so as the soil will have time to get itself in good condition before the summer planting. There is lots of pruning that can be done and a tip when you are pruning hydrangeas is to cut back only the stems that flowered last season. Your cuttings can be potted to give you new plants. Next month, we will hold our Annual General Meeting for 2014. Nominations are now available for anyone who would like to join the committee. No club can exist without a management committee and your input is always welcomed. Last month Ian Wintle, from The Giving Garden, showed us an enlightening presentation on Passion for Plants. Maybe it’s time we had another visit to his home. This month we have another power point presentation on the topic of Birds in our Backyard by Dawn Muir. From reports received this should not be missed. I hope to see you at our next meeting and have a chat over supper.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday July 8th at 7.30pm. Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place

Abel & David Wan Dental Practice (L-R) Dan Baldwin (Forest Lake National Seniors), Graham Brewer Co-ordinator, Cr Angela Owen-Taylor, and Julie Baldwin (Forest Lake National Seniors President). Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor has joined with representatives of National Seniors Forest Lake and Calamvale and the Malayan Borneo Special Operations Association to support farmers doing it tough in the bush. “In our local community we have a number of older residents who, through compassion for others, are collecting items to deliver to farmers who have been battling the ravages of nature over the past number of years,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. “This is an example of locals showing their kindness and investing their time to undertake this work for the benefit of others.” In July, local residents will drive the items collected out to St George, Queensland to the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) who will distribute them to people in need. Items being sought are non-perishable food items (including tea, coffee, sugar, rice, flour), male and female toiletries (including toothbrushes), toilet paper, and tissues. Corporate donations are also welcomed. Co-ordinator Graham Brewer said, “Any support people can give is greatly appreciated. We want to show the farming families we care and we are all Aussies together.” For those wanting to donate, contact Cr Angela OwenTaylor’s office on 3131 7022. Residents wishing to support feeding livestock can also do this by supporting the Buy a Bale campaign via the website www.buyabale.com.au. Cr Angela Owen-Taylor encourages all residents to get behind this worthwhile campaign.

vaccinations, health checks, flea, heartworm, desexing, surgery and acupuncture.

Most pets have at least one anaesthetic during their lives. An anaesthetic for desexing when they are about five to six months is normally their first. During a pet’s life they can have a number when you consider the common procedures we do daily. X-rays, dentistry, wound repair and lump removals are the ones that come to mind but there are many others. Vets are very experienced anaesthetists, often doing many in one day in a busy multi vet practice. Many owners are very concerned about pets having anaesthetics, and so they should be. Vets must offer the best and safest options so that risk is minimised. Clients should expect the following from vets when anaesthetising their pets. Anaesthetic choice. Every pet does not have the same anaesthetic combinations. The choice of the drugs used are determined by age, breed and your pet’s health. Previous anaesthetic history will also be taken into account. Your vet will have a record of how previous anaesthetics have gone. All pets, but particularly older pets, will benefit from pre-anaesthetic health checks and blood tests to make sure no underlying problems exist, perhaps not evident to an owner. Anaesthetic monitoring. Pulse Oximeters monitoring heart rate and blood oxygenation and respiratory monitors are routinely used by veterinarians. All procedures have a nurse monitoring the patient’s progress and other vets are available to assist if needed. All pets are placed on heat pads, as an anaesthetic can cause hypothermia. Anaesthetic support. Intravenous fluid support is essential. Fluids should be delivered by infusion pumps at calculated rates. These are a standard piece of equipment in all vet hospitals. Pre and post anaesthetic analgesics are routine even for the most simple of procedures. Apart from the obvious relief of pain, it has been shown that the amount of anaesthetic used is lower and the recovery is much smoother if this protocol is followed. Clients should discuss this with their vets. We are always happy to tell pet owners just how much is done to ensure their pets have the best possible anaesthetic.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR OXLEY

Help with the Federal Budget It has been over one month since the Federal Budget was delivered and the speculation and community concern continues about who will be negatively affected. Families, people with medical conditions, pensioners, schools, university students, veterans, small businesses and investors have been raising their concerns with me. One of the main areas of concern has been a lack of clear information about which Government programs have been cut, when the cuts will take effect and how this will impact on people here in the Western Corridor. If you are concerned about the Budget and want help to understand it’s impact on you, please call me on 3879 6440. Support Our Socceroos The 2014 FIFA World Cup in currently taking place in Brazil. The World Cup is undoubtedly one of the world’s largest, most watched and best loved sporting events. I’m sure that many of you, like me, face the prospect of late nights and early mornings as we cheer our favourite teams on. Our Socceroos have qualified and despite a very tough draw, including both finalists from the last World Cup Spain and The Netherlands, will be doing their best to write their name among the achievements of the legendary underdogs of Australian sporting history. As Shadow Minister for Sport I want to encourage you to follow the Socceroos and to send your support to the team via social media. Team shirts promote awareness of much needed children’s hospice

Sponsors, supporters and runners launch the Hummingbird House team shirt. Local runners and businesses have joined forces in an effort to promote and raise funds for the Queensland Kids project to build Hummingbird House. Cr Angela Owen-Taylor, together with Mark and Tenille from Athletes Foot, Forest Lake, and David and Karen Robinson from McDonalds, Forest Lake, have provided sponsorship for team running singlets to promote awareness of Hummingbird House and joined with runners and support crew to launch the team shirts on Saturday 14 June. “The Hummingbird House team shirts made their first official racing appearance at the City2South run on Sunday 15 June, and will also be participating in the Bridge 2 Brisbane and the Gold Coast Marathon over the next couple of months,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. “The racing singlets are a great conversation starter to create awareness about Hummingbird House and the important work and support it will provide. “I am pleased to support this important charity, particularly as the focus is on assisting children with life limiting illnesses and supporting their families,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. Forest Lake resident and team co-ordinator, Rebecca Bell-Fuller said, “City2South was a great event. Everyone loved the new singlets and lots of the team achieved personal best times in their run. “I had a great run and was very proud to be wearing the Team Hummingbird singlet. When I first started off, I wasn’t sure how it would be received but everyone was amazing and so willing to get behind Hummingbird House.” Co-founders of Queensland Kids, Paul and Gabrielle Quilliam said, “The Run for Hummingbird House team is a brilliant example of how a children’s hospice like Hummingbird House is a genuine community response - where individuals express their support for paediatric palliative care through their own capacity and initiative.” “This team, led by Rebecca, and the sponsorship of the shirts through local businesses and Cr Angela Owen-Taylor, showcases the willingness of our community to help build Hummingbird House for kids affected by a life limiting illness. “This is the type of support that is crucial to make a stand alone children’s hospice like Hummingbird House a reality,” said Mr Quilliam. STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER The State budget was brought down on 3rd June and saw continued investment by the government in health and education. As residents would know, I have spoken about the significant investment in our local schools over the past two years. Grand Avenue State School, Forest Lake State High School and Pallara State School have all received funding to deal with the backlog of maintenance which had been neglected for the past 20 years. Over $1 million dollars has flowed to schools in the Algester Electorate to deal with this appalling situation. Another $1.1 million dollars through the Great Results Guarantee has been invested in our schools to cement a strong foundation for our preps to year 2 students. I, like the Government, understand that if you invest in early education and give our children a solid foundation in education you will reap the benefits later on. I also met with representatives of the Forest Lake Branch of the National Seniors and was very happy to be able to tell them that the Government had heard their concerns around the Federal Government cuts to concessions, and that we had found the funding to fill the void to allow concessions to remain at existing levels. It has to be understood that it was only possible to provide this funding because of the hard decisions and fiscal discipline that the Government has shown. Just some other highlights of the State budget; funding for 155 new ambulances, 100 new Ambulance Officers, funding for a further 267 Police Officers as part of our pledge to put 1100 extra Police on the beat. I would encourage residents to have their say on the proposed Education Accord. The Queensland Government is undertaking extensive consultation with parents, schools, unions and school sectors to map out the future of education and create Queensland’s first Education Accord. Residents can go to: www.deta.qld.gov.au/educationaccord and complete the online questionnaire.

Forest Lake Lions Club update by Alex Eramudugolla

On a glorious autumn morning in May, supporters of the Walk with the Lions Charity event gathered at Area 3 Stage of our picturesque lake. After the registration formalities, the walkers were taken through a series of warm-up exercises by professional personal trainer, Katherine of Forest Lake Fitness. The participants thoroughly enjoyed the exercises accompanied by music. Then Cr Angela Owen-Taylor gave the signal for the start of the walk. Families, groups and individuals took to the walking path and completed the two laps in less than an hour. Hon Bernie Ripoll MP, Anthony Shorten MP, Cr Milton Dick, Mark Newman of Heritage Bank and Marilyn Thurtell of MTR Property Group enthusiastically joined the other walkers. Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, an enthusiastic supporter of the walk, could not attend due to an urgent engagement. Sausage sizzle, soft drinks and coffee were available for the walkers. Six lucky entries and 25 raffle prizes were drawn. All the prizes were donated by the local business community and individuals. The proceeds of which boosted the funds raised. Seven walkers raised over $200 each through sponsorship of which four were close to or over the $500 mark. It was the first walk organised by the Club and over 100 walkers took part, raising $6001.25 for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland. Certainly, a great community event where families, groups and individual got together to support a worthy cause.

ROUP UPDATE by Cub Scout Leader, Andrea

It has been busy, busy, busy in the Richlands Cub Scout pack this year. We have practiced our water safety skills at the Goodna Aquatic Centre, laid a bush trail for others to follow, camped by the creek at Chuwar, learned about our local WW1 history with a guided walk at Honour Avenue, Yeronga, participated in the Inala ANZAC March and much more. We have also welcomed three new Cubs to the pack - a big Wolf Howl to our newest members Sheldon, Kelly and Joe. hings are not slowing down either. In the next six weeks, we will be spending a day at the Eprapah Environment Centre, travelling to the Schonelle Theatre to watch Gang Show and learning about personal safety through a visit from a local police officer. After all, a busy Cub is a happy Cub.

thirteen hour time zone difference to Brisbane doesn’t help matters! Some of you may have watched the Netherlands v Spain game in which the supposed top team in the world were convincingly beaten 5-1 by the Dutch, or not long after the Germans showing the number three team Portugal how to play football. What has this to do with personal finance you may well ask! Simply this, does a one game result suddenly mean Spain or Portugal should now be described as mediocre sides and relegated to say 20th in the world. Similarly, does it mean that the Netherlands are now the top side in the world? Of course not! And yet, how often do we look at the performance of our superannuation fund(s) or other investments and based on short term performance think that we should now switch allegiance to the fund that was the top performer last month, last week or even last year. The reality is that I don’t see Spain or Portugal dropping out of the world’s top ten teams any time soon. If your investments are essentially consistent with and satisfy your financial goals, whatever they might be, then don’t switch ‘teams’ just because of some short term aberration. Unless you are in the markets as a short term trader, does it really matter too much if there are short term fluctuations? Just as no team can be top of the ladder every season, neither should you expect your investments to be the top performer every time. That is not to say that one should continue with non-performing investments; however it does mean that if over the longer period there has been a generally consistent performance that is in parallel with your overall expectations, then stick with your plan. Don’t chase the latest star performers; they may be yesterday’s one horse wonders. It is possible that Cameroon might beat Brazil in a one-off Group A game, but the results over ten games might paint a very different picture! I suppose I’ll be eating my words if Cameroon lift the World Cup in a few weeks’ time!

In the last few months, there has been a lot of discussion in the public forum about whether we have become a nation of ‘takers’ and ‘whingers’. I’m not so sure things are as bad as some people are making out. For one thing, the ‘good old days’ were often not as ‘good’ as our nostalgic eyes would like to remember them. On the other hand, I see a lot of people working particularly hard in our community today – oftentimes, volunteers who are serving their community without any financial reward. But, the whole debate does raise one of the greatest legacies we can leave the next generation – the value of hard work. The values of industry and being productive are good ones to carry. Working hard and putting in a solid effort are rewarding and give a person a sense of utility and value. For many in our community at the moment, work is hard to come by but these values don’t have to just be seen in the workforce. I know a man in Forest Lake who has been actively, but unsuccessfully, looking for work for some months. Rather than just waiting for something, he has used that available time to contribute to our community, helping those in need and volunteering in different roles. Being active and productive also give a good example to those around us. Some time ago, I went to a funeral for a fellow who had worked hard throughout his life, both at work and in the community. One of the most common things his kids and others said about him was, “He taught me the value of hard work.” It may sound like a simple thing, but it’s a great legacy to leave. The Bible speaks a lot about the value of hard work, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10) Additionally, “Work brings profit, but mere talk leads to poverty!” (Proverbs 14:23) Sometimes, even as we work hard, we won’t be successful at what we do. History is full of people who didn’t succeed at first but kept going through hard work: Walt Disney, Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan to name a few. But, if you’re struggling to keep going at the moment, let me encourage you to keep having a go, keep leaving the legacy of being productive for those around you and who come after you.

Forest Lake National Seniors By Julie Baldwin Branch Update

Those in the 50 something age group in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs are invited to join us. July’s meeting is Wednesday 9th at Settlers Village, 41 High Street, 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Parking available at Salvation Army and on High Street. To our members who are unwell, best wishes for a return to good health. May was a busy month. On May 22, a busload of eager travellers enjoyed a trip to historic Harrow Homestead. We took tea and scones on the verandah before taking in the splendour of the beautiful homestead and gardens. The Zone Conference was held on 29 May. One hundred and eighty six delegates from 15 branches attended. It was a special event for our young branch to organise and it was fantastic to have so many members from our branch there. It was a great day with information sharing from National Seniors CEO Michael O’Neill, as well as James Sedman, followed by helpful comments by Zone Chair Marjorie Green. Lunch was courtesy of the Lions Club Richlands and wonderful chamber music was provided by students from The Springfield Anglican College. Entertainer Romain’s performance was outstanding. Our Queensland Day stall was on Sunday 1 June. Anthony Shorten MP Algester was MC for a terrific afternoon of fun and celebration. We were certainly kept busy with enquiries about National Seniors. At June’s Branch Meeting, we were given a presentation by our special guest speaker, editor of Local News Publications, Susannah Friis who spoke about her work with Destiny Rescue. Susannah is part of the volunteer writing team for the organisation. Coffee and Chat mornings are on the first Wednesday of the month at 9.30am, either at The Coffee Club or Diamantes. Contact Ros 3372 9432 or Julie 3278 7274 if you would like to come along. On Thursday 19 June a large group of us travelled to Sherwood RSL at Corinda for lunch. These outings are very popular, not expensive and an excellent chance to catch up for an enjoyable day out. The Theatre Goers Group are all set for a big night out in June with dinner followed by a performance of Love Letters. We also have a theatre restaurant performance to look forward to in August. Tuesday Movie Mornings are planned when suitable movies are being shown at handy locations nearby. Everyone loves Christmas in July and this year, once again, our organised special event is sure to be enjoyed by all. For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Ros 3372 9432.

It was a pleasure to attend the South West Progress Association’s Queensland Day Volunteer Awards on June 7, and finally honour the local Queensland heroes who received awards for their volunteering efforts and incredible community participation. This is our eighth year of co-hosting the event with the SWPA, and the quality and quantity of nominations continue to grow each year. I am delighted to announce that many of the nominees came from the local Forest Lake area, another strong reminder of the wonderful spirit that our community possesses. Some of these awardees from the Forest Lake area included Jonathan Slack, nominated for his Ph: 3372 1775 many years of service to Lions Club International – recently receiving his twelve year service pin. Jonathan has helped with many other community groups and organisations, M.DICK ad:45mmWx65mmH 20/01/10 12 ranging from managing the local soccer club to holding executive positions in the Jindalee Bowls Club and Forest Lake Lions Club. Another recipient with ties to the wonderful Lions Club was Julie Barr, who has held multiple board positions for the club which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. Councillor for Julie also volunteers with Probus, an organisation that help the retired members of our Richlands Ward community stay informed and active. Margaret Nightingale was also recognised as a local hero. Her selfless years of service Inala Library, to the Forest Lake State School P&C Association, as well as coordination of school fetes Civic Centre, Corsair Avenue, and movie events in the park, makes Margaret a very worthy awardee. Her volunteer Inala. participation also extends to the local Neighbourhood Watch and St John Ambulance, one of Australia’s leading providers of first aid services, training and equipment. These are just some of the wonderful volunteers from our community who were successful, and there simply isn’t enough column space to acknowledge everyone who makes Forest Lake a better place. If you know someone who deserves to be recognised in the future, please consider nominating them for next year’s event. Phone: 3407 1211 If you have any queries about the Forest Lake area, please feel free to contact my richlands.ward@ecn.net.au office on 3372 3207.

by Les Brooks

On a clear and beautiful June morning, members of our club boarded two Concorde Buses and headed along the Mt. Lindsay Highway to Tamrookum and the Robotic Dairy of the Dennis Family. On arrival, we served morning tea, a tour and talk on the running of the dairy from the 1930’s when the cows were hand milked twice a day. Four years ago they decided to install three automated milking stalls and now the cows are milked three times a day all by a computerized machine.

The Dairy is now controlled and run by a computer, the gates in the paddocks and the milking shed are connected to the computer and every cow has a collar with a computer chip in it. Our next stop was the Beaudesert RSL, where we enjoyed a two course meal which was enjoyed by all, then it was 2.30pm and time to make our way back to Forest Lake. Forest Lake 50+ Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am, and new members are always welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Kay (Treasurer) on 3278 9406 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Date claimers for the next three meetings are July 18th, August 15th and September 19th.

From the desk of

Angela Owen-Taylor

Parkinson Ward Councillor

A special congratulations to National Seniors Forest Lake who hosted a well attended and informative Zone Conference recently. It was my pleasure to attend to represent the Lord Mayor and speak about the Access and Inclusion Policy which has been implemented in Brisbane. It is important for residents of all ages to have a forum in which we can ensure their points of view are heard. I am pleased to advise residents work will commence in the new financial year to construct new playground equipment with rubber soft-fall and shade sails at Heathwood Park, as a result of funding I have approved through the Parkinson Ward Footpath and Parks Trust Fund. This follows on from recent improvements at Beccaria Park in Doolandella where a new BBQ and shade shelter has recently been installed.

On 1 June it was wonderful to see so many people at the Lake to celebrate the 5th annual Parkinson Ward Multicultural and Dragonboat Festival. Starting the day with a Citizenship Ceremony hosted by Rotary Club of Forest Lake, the crowds began building early. It was a privilege for me to preside over this ceremony and to officially open this Council funded multicultural festival. Following the official opening, I assisted with awakening the dragons (on the boats) by painting their eyes. An official procession of the 14 Dragonboat teams from the Amphitheatre to the Sails Stage completed the official opening component. A special thank you to Sidd Mehta of the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre who co-ordinated the design and painting of original Turtle Trophies, these one of a kind pieces were painted by an indigenous artist and will be treasured by the winning team in the flag capture dragonboat event. I would like to thank residents for their participation and support of this event and for welcoming so many people from different cultures to enjoy our local community. Over the course of the day, so many people commented what a lovely suburb Forest Lake is and how enjoyable the area around the Lake is. To all of the local service organisations, clubs and individuals who were involved – your support is greatly appreciated for without your contribution this event would not have been such a great success. A special thanks to the Rotary Club of Forest Lake for hosting the Citizenship Ceremony and for being involved in the Festival Steering committee led by Hakka Association and to Brisbane River Dragons and SES Southern Group for their assistance in maintaining safety for the event.
