Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane, Mr Pat McKinney, came face to face with one of the HOGS before they set off on their ride. For the past decade, Kiwanis members have been cooking breakfast for the HOGS (Harley Owners Group) dedicated enthusiasts who donate their time and their Harley Davidson to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. On Sunday 19th May, 130 bikes riders departed from Morgan and Wacker, Ross Street, Newstead, with a paying pillion passenger for a day trip through the Sunshine Coast hinterland. For the past nineteen years the HOGS have an annual ride supporting MD raising in excess of $160,000 which has provided much needed financial support for specialist medical equipment and client support. This years ride was sold out and Kiwanis members cooked more than 200 sausages and served 500 cups of coffee from 6am to 9am when the riders departed. Muscular Dystrophy is hoping to raise $25,000 this year.

Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

I think you would all agree that we are living in a digital age. Technology is now such an integral part of our day to day lives that it’s hard to remember how we used to do things previously. I admit that I love new technology. I would be lost without my iphone and am amazed at people who disparage the internet and all it’s uses. Yet, in many other ways, I am oldschool. I still like to buy CD’s and nothing can replace that new-book smell or the weight of one in my hands. I prefer to actually go into a shop instead of buying online and, as much as I like to play games on my phone, nothing beats a board game with family and friends. There is pressure on all of us to ‘get with the times’, personally and professionally. What you are holding in your hand as you read this is testament to the fact that there is still a place for ‘flesh and blood’ publications, and we are not going anywhere! As long as people keep reading our publications and advertisers keep telling us how much it benefits their business to advertise with us, we will keep producing them. However, we do listen to feedback. There is a need to bridge the gap between what we currently have and the digital age in which we live. Which is why we are so pleased to announce that all our publications are now available online at our website: www. Lnp.net.au. Each publication will be updated each month, with back issues still available to view and interact with. The other bonus is you can read our publications in other areas and keep an eye on what’s happening slightly wider afield. Also, if you know someone who has moved, they can now still keep in touch with the area. What we love about this, is that it brings a whole other ease of use for you, the reader and for our customers who advertise their businesses with us. With live links, you can easily contact any business in our publications. Send them an email, right from your computer or ipad or be taken straight to their website for more information. And for community groups, organisations and charities, this is perfect too. If you, the reader are interested in finding out more about a club or group, simply click on the link to their website, email or facebook group and you are instantly in touch. It’s easy to keep up to date with each online version. Our facebook page will have a link to the latest edition each month as soon as it is uploaded, so if you haven’t already, ‘like’ The Lake News on facebook so you receive the notifications (www.facebook.com/pages/the-lake-news). Alternatively, you can bookmark this page on our website: www.Lnp.net.au/the-lake-news. The latest edition will be uploaded a day or two after the letterbox delivery. You can also request to be put on our email reminder list. By providing this new version of our publications, we believe we are making it even easier to shop, volunteer and connect locally. We welcome all feedback, including any problems you may encounter. You can either send an email straight to me: editor@lnp.net.au or leave a comment on the facebook page. We look forward to hearing from you!

Dental

Your Teeth Your Smile

Dental

By Dr Paul Holliday

Is everything the way it seems? A visit to your dentist for a checkup should be a simple painless procedure. A full or comprehensive checkup takes more than a couple of minutes though so don’t expect to be in and out within 10 minutes. Our job as dentists is to inform you (our patients) what we see as dentists and the condition of your teeth, gums, bone, bite, fillings or other dental restorations and any other information that is related to those. One important point is a checkup or examination is for you to find out how your dental health is going. Dentistry has improved considerably in the past few years and the available treatments have also improved considerably. There are many different ways of checking your teeth, gums, fillings etc nowadays. One good way is via magnification of digital images. A lot of the time when we look at your fillings for example they appear fine to the naked eye (or sometimes just a little fuzzy if you haven’t got your glasses on). Once a digital image is taken and magnified, there may be things that can’t be seen like tiny cracks or fractures. Often this occurs with old fillings due to the natural breakdown and aging of the filling material or it may occur with grinding or clenching your teeth at night. However it happened, it is important to take it seriously. I always hear “But it feels fine and I don’t get any pain from it”. That certainly is the case if the crack has only just started and you may be lucky. Once a crack starts it can’t repair itself (it’s like a windscreen it will only get bigger or spread further) so it really needs to be repaired properly. If a crack is left to continue it can lead to much more expensive dental treatment like endodontic treatment or implants. So how do you know if you have a cracked tooth or filling? It usually can start to cause sensitivity to biting or when you have hot or cold drinks. It sometimes can wake you up at night if you grind or clench your teeth together heavily. It usually is not the same every day so it appears to come and go. An x-ray is a good idea to make sure the crack hasn’t gone into the nerve or weakened the tooth too much, and so the best options for treating the crack properly can be decided. A magnified digital image is another way to see cracks especially if they are in old fillings. A diagnostic laser can also be used to check for cracks in teeth and in fillings. Sometimes a dye can be used to see a crack as well. What about treatment? Well unfortunately it really depends on the tooth or filling in question and the bite and the gums and the bone and...lots of things actually. Everyone and every case is different so it is impossible to tell without seeing it and going through a series of thorough diagnostic checks along with x-rays etc. It really is a case of needing to see it before treatment can be discussed. Guessing over the phone just won’t work. Your doctor doesn’t try and guess over the phone what is wrong and neither should your dentist. If you think you might have a cracked tooth or filling you should try and not bite anything on it (that sounds obvious doesn’t it?) and you should get your dentist to check it out properly.

Hello Readers The involvement of young people in the community in which they live at an early age is an excellent way to build a positive attitude toward service to others. Services such as that run by the Forest Lake RSL on ANZAC Day in our local community, offer that opportunity and it was pleasing this year to see so many residents from Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs involved in the ANZAC Day march and Service at the Lake amphitheatre. St John’s is always proud to be a part of this ANZAC Service. Perhaps the most significant Service for the College was held in the new secondary auditorium, where our Chorale and Senior Concert Band led the service. Our Guest Speaker was past student, Private Jessica Clune, who addressed the students on what ANZAC Day means to serving Defence personnel. Private Clune encouraged those present with these poignant remarks. “I know that I will be standing proudly under the Australian flag as dawn breaks, in silence, reflecting on the sacrifices they made for us. Tomorrow is the day we stop and make sure the ANZAC spirit is still alive within all of us. So tomorrow morning I hope that everyone

will sacrifice their sleep-in and brave the fresh April air to attend a dawn service. It’s a small sacrifice to make compared to what we asked of our young service men and women.” While being involved in the community is a very important part of a young person’s development, so too is their academic development and their passion for learning. At St John’s, students commence at the secondary school in Year Seven, ensuring that they have a head start to secondary education and the immediate advantage of learning with dedicated specialist teachers. If you would like the opportunity to hear how St John’s will develop your child’s mind, setting the foundation for secondary school academic success from Year Seven, please join us for our Year Seven Focus Morning Tea on Wednesday, 19 June. Inspired locals make a difference

When local resident Sue Gibbons, no stranger to helping others in need, read a recent article in The Lake News calling for donations to contribute to the Homeless Connect event last month, she was galvanised into action. Sue collected boxes of toiletries and long life food, taking donations from the neighbours in her area. In doing so, Sue spoke to one neighbour in particular of the fact that many young parents living on the streets are in need of nappies for their babies. The plight of these parents and babies struck a chord in Sue’s neighbour, Robert, who went home and thought of how he could help. After doorknocking the neighbouring streets, who were exceedingly generous, Robert and Sue were able to deliver boxes of nappies in a range of sizes to the drop off point at Cr Owen Taylor’s offices to be sent on to the Homeless Connect event. Having taken a photo of the nappies, Robert then used this in a thank you letter to all those who had contributed to the endeavour. Both Robert and Sue are richer for the experience of helping others, and have made a huge difference to people living a life of homelessness. Anybody and everybody can make a difference, it just requires seeing a need and filling it in whatever way you can.

Free social tennis day at Cascades

Tennis enthusiasts in Forest Lake can now enjoy the newly cleaned and maintained courts at Cascades Village. Convenor Runelle has organised a Mixed Social Day for June 1 and invites residents to come on down for a morning of meeting new people and tennis. “People of all playing levels are welcome to come down, as well as families,” said Runelle. “There is no charge, with tennis balls supplied. I’m just asking people to bring their own racquets on the day.” As the only tennis courts in Forest Lake where residents can make a booking, the Cascades facility is available for use and Runelle is keen to see more people take advantage of this great amenity right in our community. “I am hoping to start a weekly ladies social tennis morning if people are interested,” she said. “As well as possibly more mixed social days like the one planned for June 1st.” The courts are situated on the corner of Cascade Drive and Kondalilla Parade, where there is also parking available. There is no need to book for the social day, which will be held from 9am to noon but anyone wanting more information can contact Runelle on 0403 775 007.

Community Hub hits unexpected delay Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor (Parkinson Ward) has announced the Forest Lake Community Centre project anticipated to commence later this year has met with an unexpected delay. “Earlier this year, Brisbane City Council officers began progressing the design of the building ahead of a formal development application being submitted and the project being put to tender,” Cr Owen-Taylor said. “During this process, it has become apparent that there is an unforeseen issue with the identified site due to its proximity to the water body at Forest Lake. “Forest Lake Boulevard acts as a dam wall for the megalitres of water (equivalent to 269 Olympic swimming pools) contained within the man-made stormwater basin. “Following a review of the 2011 Brisbane Flood Enquiry, and recently implemented State Government Legislation, Brisbane City Council is required to upgrade Forest Lake Boulevard to meet a dam spillway capacity.” As the site is the only available location suitable for a Community Centre in Forest Lake, the building work has been deferred for future funding and will require further community consultation and review, lengthening the original projections for the delivery of this project. “I have sought advice on proceeding with the delivery of the Community Centre prior to the design of a spillway and been informed that should construction of the Community Centre proceed prior to the spillway, additional works may have to be retrofitted to the Centre or parts of the works demolished. “It is not the intention of Brisbane City Council to deliver the Community Centre project first and then risk incurring additional expenses on the rate payers of Brisbane. “While this unforeseen delay is unfortunate, it is better to undertake the spillway design first and follow on with the community centre. “The approach that is being undertaken is financially responsible and appropriate given the circumstances,” concluded Cr Owen-Taylor.

More than just a canine companion When local resident Kerrylea Harrison takes her chihuahua Zeeva out and about to the shops with her, it’s not because she doesn’t want to leave her furry friend at home. Zeeva is a service dog with registered organisation mindDog. mindDog began in response to a need for people with mental illness to have assistance at work, in social situations and everyday activities like shopping and paying bills. mindDog service dogs are trained to assist their owner with the fear and anxiety that often compromises mental illness sufferers lives. mindDog was established in 2011 by a small group of volunteers, all professionals in their own fields, who identified an area of need. Many people who live with mental health disorders find the world to be a difficult place. A mindDog can provide practical and emotional support. People with depression, anxiety or agoraphobia can find that a mindDog allows them to leave the house, exercise, and take their medication on time or something as simple as going to the shops. A mindDog can provide support and comfort during a panic attack, and are a reality check with Post Traumatic Stress flashbacks. Service dogs are working dogs meaning that while out with their owner, they are ‘on duty’ and should not be distracted by being approached or patted without the owners specific consent. Access by people with service dogs, including Seeing Eye Dogs, Assistance Dogs or Medical Alert Dogs, to public places, services and transport is guaranteed by the Discrimination Act. All dogs undergo a stringent training and testing process to earn certification, a process Zeeva is still going through. So next time you see little Zeeva in Forest Lake, remember that she has a right to be there and is an important part of her owners everyday activities. For more information on mindDog assistance dogs, go to www.minddog.org.au or call them on 02 9985 7201.

June is all about Queensland. Firstly there’s the Queensland Plan, which kicked off in Mackay last month with a summit involving delegates from all across the state, including two from our very own electorate. The Queensland Plan is all about the future of Queensland, sharing ideas and aspirations to define a longterm vision for Queensland, creating a blue print for what Queenslander’s want their state to look like in 30 years. Keeping with the theme, the Algester Electorate Office in conjunction with the Algester/Parkinson Lions will be hosting a huge Queensland Day festival this month. I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday 8 June at Brookbent Road Park, Pallara to enjoy a day of family fun with live stage performances, Queensland Police Pipes & Drums, cannon firing, rides and many more attractions. The festival will be a great way to get to know some of our dedicated community groups, find out about local sporting clubs and get a taste for some multi-cultural foods and experiences. Come along and celebrate Queensland’s 154th birthday!

A day with Bernie Ripoll

Written by Alex Oakley, Year 11 student at Forest Lake State High School.

On Tuesday, 7th May, I was invited to spend a day with local politician and Member for Oxley, Mr Bernie Ripoll. I received this invitation after I asked Mr Ripoll for an interview for my Film and Television documentary on swearing in public. The first business of the day was to do my interview in his local electorate office based in Forest Lake. When my interview was finished, Mr Ripoll’s secretary briefed both of us on the plan for the day. After the briefing, we left his electorate office and proceeded to a well deserving Goodna charity where Mr Ripoll presented a cheque for $1000. Then we headed to the city for the highlight of the day. The first place that we visited in the city was the Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices (CPO). I watched on as staff made final preparations for a lunch and completed general office tasks. At about 12 o’clock, we headed over to the Stanford Plaza for lunch with the Malaysian business council and the Honourable Senator Bob Carr. I met Mr Carr. We shook hands and had a conversation. During the lunch I listened as Mr Carr and Mr Ripoll delivered memorable speeches. As he was leaving, Mr Carr told me to “Keep studying”. Overall I had a day that I will never forget and I learnt how hectic a politician’s life is.

Help others while making new friends Local resident, Sue Gibbons has been crocheting blankets for the elderly and is now teaching a neighbour the skill after she expressed interest in re-learning a childhood skill now forgotten. After hearing about the Springfield Yarners in Springfield who knit blankets for the needy, Sue is interested in starting a group in Forest Lake. The ability to crochet is not needed, although others with the skill are encouraged to come along and help teach beginners. Sue is hoping to gather a group of people together who are willing to crochet and make blankets for the elderly or the needy. Forest Lake Lions Club update Recognition of Lions Community Work At the recent Multiple District Convention held in Canberra, Mr Dick Smith AO, who attended as a Keynote Speaker, together with his wife Pip, donated $1,000,000 to the Australian Lions Foundation. This wonderful donation is to be used by the Foundation to support Clubs who apply for Grants on compassionate grounds for projects within their community. Mr Smith, who attended the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation after his address, said he and his wife were delighted to support the Foundation and the work of the Lions family throughout Australia. Mr and Mrs Smith have asked that the Foundation keep them informed about the support provided and how their donation is being used. The Trustees of the Foundation sincerely thank them for this generous donation which is an acknowledgement not just of the Foundation but for all the work and projects undertaken by Clubs in supporting their community. Text Books to Remote Area Schools Our club has received a consignment of excess text books from Forest Lake State High School. The books which are near new have now been catalogued and plans are underway to deliver them to needy schools, some in remote areas. We will use our network of Lions Clubs to facilitate the delivery and distribution of the books at minimum cost. A Litter Free Boulevard Lions and Leos and their families and friends joined together on Saturday 4th May to clean-up the section of the Boulevard between Lockwood Av and Blunder Road.

by Alex Eramudugolla, VP Public Relations, Forest Lake Lions Club.

This is one of the most littered areas of our suburb. When we conducted the first clean-up in December last year, nearly 10 large bags of various kinds of litter were collected. Most of the litter were empty food containers originated mainly from the fast-food outlets in the area. However, this time it was heartening to note that there was less litter, showing a significant improvement to our main thoroughfare. The next clean-up will be on Sunday 23rd June. The clean-up team will assemble at the North end of the Forest Lake village car park at 7.00 am. You are welcome to join us. Collection bags and pick-up stakes will be provided.

After N I F R E N R all the things we have heard about recently, (no increase to family tax benefit, the 0.5% CofO B.Com C.A.

Medicare increase to fund the NDIS and projected deficits that seem to go up a few more billion every couple of weeks), one wonders what else will be there. It has been interesting to read people’s comments recently to some of the issues that have now been made public. Particularly interesting are the comments in relation to the ever growing deficit and a government spending beyond its means...but of course it wasn’t their fault, they just blame revenues for being down! Some of you may be aware that there is a Charter of Budget Honesty Act that has guiding principles for presentation of the nation’s finances and improving transparency. However, here is an idea that would be nice for Treasurers to consider in the future. In addition to presenting extensive and often confusing and complicated lists of revenues and expenditures, including new initiatives, how about translating all of this to a simple example of how it would look if the Budget was applied to a family situation, and then trying to show how that family is now going to survive. Reduce the frequently bandied about terms of deficits and GDPs to a personalised level. Also, eliminate “smoke and mirrors” often caused by accrual accounting and show the cash effect – after all that is how you and I do our budgets. Perhaps this might prompt the governments of the day to take a closer look at what they are doing, because sure as eggs you and I see problems on the horizon if expenditures consistently outweigh incomes. I remember a line from a Dickens novel which went something like: “Income one pound, expenditure nineteen shillings and sixpence – result happiness. Income one pound, expenditure twenty shillings and sixpence – result misery.” Economics was not my forte at university, and I do know that issues at the macro level cannot necessarily be easily translated to the micro level. However, that does not mean an attempt could not be made to put the Budget in a better perspective, both from the government’s view and that of the general public. However, I don’t suggest holding your breath.

FLUTD is a complex condition with many causes, either individually or in combination, starting the problem. Most cases involve cystitis, which causes swelling and irritation in the bladder, and crystal formation which can lead to stones being formed. Cats affected are usually uncomfortable, and, if a blockage occurs, in extreme pain. Recognising these typical signs are critical: • abnormal urination, including blood in the urine, abnormal colour of urine, excessive straining to urinate, or passing urine frequently in small amounts; • abdominal pain; • behavioural changes, such as restlessness, listlessness, hiding or refusal to eat; • changes in the pattern of urination, such as urinating outside the litter tray or in unusual places. Cats with these signs should be checked and are often hospitalised for tests and treatment till the problem is fully understood. The causes can be related to: • Food – high levels of certain minerals in food can increase the chance of crystal formation. Food also influences the acidity/alkalinity of urine, which can lead to crystal formation. High urine pH can contribute to the production of struvite stones, while low urine pH can produce calcium oxalate stones. • Behaviour and stress – lack of exercise, confinement indoors, reduced water intake and even dirty litter trays may cause your cat to change their urination pattern and to urinate less often, which can lead to the development of FLUTD. • Body Condition – excess weight also predisposes a cat to FLUTD. • Gender – urinary obstruction is more common in younger, male neutered cats. A multimodal approach is recommended for the management of feline urinary tract disease. The approach includes identifying and controlling underlying medical disorders, modifications to the cat’s home environment, addressing behaviour issues, and dietary management. Giving an appropriately formulated food is a key element of the complete approach to the long-term management of the most common conditions of FLUTD in cats.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update by Don Mitchell

We have missed a couple of editions because everybody is busy and we are very short of active members but I will come to that later. Last month we had an amazing Guest Speaker who was none other than your beloved editor of The Lake News, Susannah Friis. Susannah gave a very passionate address about a little known organisation which has taken up the challenge to save children who are sold into sex slavery in Asia and around the world. Destiny Rescue is about: • The rescue of children directly from brothels • Protecting vulnerable children through Prevention Programs. • Providing schooling, vocational training, medical help, counselling and daily needs to those who have been or are in harms way. Truly a magnificent endeavour and an objective that surely must challenge every one of you that read this article! I was personally floored by what Susannah revealed in her talk. Please go to www.destinyrescue.org to learn more of what Destiny Rescue is all about and I am certain Susannah would be only too happy to tell you more. Another rescue is required nearer at home. The Rotary Club is seriously depleted of community-minded people to continue its work. We need ordinary people or groups of people both men and women to have sufficient numbers to have an impact in society. For instance, we cannot handle the colourful Paddle Boats on Forest lake anymore because we cannot fill the volunteer roster. Rotary is more than just filling rosters, it is a way of life and social outlet for ordinary people of all ages. We all think that we do not have time, which is a product of today’s society but if you pause a moment, you may find that community work is worthy of some time in our busy lives. If you want to learn more about this go to: forestlake.rotaryclub.asn.au. We would love to welcome you to our Club!

Family Focus with Mark Mackay

Mark Mackay is the Baptist pastor at Forest Lake and teaches at Malyon College.

One of the most sensitive issues in our society today is censorship. There are hours dedicated to determining standards for advertising, television programs, etc. Most recently, there has been great discussion about the ubiquitous advertising of gambling – a discussion I hope will lead to some more appropriate restrictions! But, as much as I applaud increased dialogue on these issues, we also need to recognise our personal responsibility to monitor what is fed into the minds of our families. For example, we may not be able to CT 0468 5x2(73mm) [P].indd 1 3/06/10 4:31 PM change the level of profanity on TV in a time-slot when children are still up but we can do more than be upset – turn the tv off! The problem if we don’t monitor what gets fed into the lives of young people is that these images, w w w . s e c u r i t y r a n g e r s . c o m . a u commercials, etc, may inform their understanding of self-worth and value. For example, when my daughters Alarm System & Monitoring from: see TV ads that tell them that men will only love women $11.00 per week who look a certain way and act a certain way, they are still too young to completely differentiate between Alarm Monitoring Only from: advertising puffery and life’s reality. But, I can act $6.60 per week to protect them from that nonsense and speak truth, integrity and value into their lives. If you doubt what I say – if you don’t think young people are influenced by advertising and pop-culture, then ask yourself why companies pay so much on product placement. Advertising works! How else can one explain the rise of One Direction – they’re not the Beatles! But we want more for our kids than for their selfesteem to be determined by culture. We want our kids to have the self-respect that is not swayed by teen magazines or blogs. Don’t take me as being prudish! I’m visit us ONLINE not saying that TV is bad or that the Internet is evil LNP.NET.AU or that we should lock our kids away. But, we have to be sure that our kids are not just receiving messages but processing them appropriately. Information is being thrown at them today at ever-increasing speed and volumes. But, our kids are not necessarily being taught how to interpret and evaluate this increased information. The Psalmist sings to God, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:14) People have been made in the image of God and are Read testimonials of inestimable value to Him. So, we should be wary from advertisers of the information that gets fed to our kids, to ensure and contributors that their self-awareness and esteem is nurtured and developed in a healthy way. For all your What can we do practically to put this into place? advertising and Here are some thoughts: delivery information • Keep media devices (TV’s, computers, etc) in a public area of the house; • Don’t just turn something inappropriate off – talk Local News Publications about why it’s inappropriate; independent publishers of Centenary News, The Lake News, The Local News and The Greater Springfield Times. • Find positive alternatives and talk about them. building better communities through communication While regulatory progress might be slow, we can make a difference in our own homes!

Bronze reward at National competition Lachlan Cramond and Tobias Smith from the Centenary Rowing Club both won Bronze Medals at Sydney but sadly had to crew with other rowing clubs. Lachlan Cramond won two Bronze Medals gaining the best club result, his first in the U17 Quad Scull and the second in the U17 Double Scull. The Centenary squad fielded one of the smallest teams the Club has ever sent to the Nationals, but a difficult training programme resulting from the January floods may well have caused this. Centenary Rowing Club member, Lachlan Cramond Cramond who is in Grade 11 at Centenary State High School was lucky brings home two Bronze medals. to compete at the Nationals this year as he had not been regarded as good enough to gain a place in the Centenary Team but was instead part of the Coomera Anglican College team. Australian Coach Alan Bromiley very quickly picked up Cramond as he was looking for an extra oarsman for his Under 17 Quad Four from Coomera Anglican College. Mr Bromiley said yesterday that he only uses two criteria to select his crews – sculling trials and a stop watch. “For me this has proved to gain the best results at National competition for in the last 15 National competitions I have had rowers compete I have always returned with either Gold, Silver or Bronze. In regards to Lachlan Cramond he has to be one of the fittest and strongest young men I have ever come across in my coaching career and though not tall is ideal as either a bow or stroke oarsman in a light crew. I hope very much that he will be able to fit into any future crew that I am coaching as he is in my opinion a fantastic find for Queensland rowing,” Mr Bromiley said. Cramond said that he would love to be coached by Mr Bromiley again. “Whatever we did was always as a crew - we ate together, we trained together, discussed the result of each training row together and had team meetings every night,” Cramond said. “The regatta was simply huge with a massive number of boats, trailers, spectators and of course everywhere you looked there seemed to be rowers in their thousands. “Gaining two Bronze Medals has made me re-set my goals to want to become a better oarsman to maybe one day represent Queensland,” Cramond said.

On Denmark Hill with vistas over Ipswich and mountains in the distance, is Gooloowan. Like so many heritage-listed properties, its history is a fascinating one. In its 144 year history, only two families have had the privilege of calling Gooloowan home. The house was originally built for Benjamin Cribb, born in Dorset England in 1807 and came to Moreton Bay aboard the Chasely in 1849. He called the business he started in Ipswich “London Stores”. By mid 1864 The Queensland Times was reporting on the progress of the building of his home which was designed by architect Balding. The present owners, ophthalmologist Dr Graham Isbell and his wife scientist Genevieve Isbell, have undertaken an amazing accurate period restoration. There have been few major changes to the house. The edifice is still of brick and 25 rooms with a nursery and office. Visitors always comment on the separate bathrooms for ladies, men and servants and the well into which a servant threw her newborn. She was later charged with murder. Another unusual feature is a hand-operated lift at the rear of the house. Most of the furniture is still the original as well as the huge collection of books in the library purchased by the first owners. The four year labour of love in restoring Gooloowan became a family affair. A son-in-law painted the magnificent mural in the conservatory and a son prepared old bricks as well as laying them in the courtyard. All the family was involved in scouring Australia and beyond for necessary objets d’art. After Genevieve Isbell delivered a brief history of the house and its restoration, Probians were invited to the elegant dining room where everyone enjoyed home-baked scones and other goodies served on Mason china. Leaving the beautiful period home with a tinge of sadness of yesteryear, Probians proceeded to lunch at the Brothers Leagues Club and then off to RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre. En route the heavens greeted us with a deluge of water. A caring bus driver, not wanting to get Probians drenched, with the aid of two pilots carefully negotiated the bus through a very narrow barrier to get as close as possible to an aircraft hangar. Many aircraft were on display and members had their individual favourites from the first Canberra bomber, Bell Iroquois and Bell Sioux helicopter, the latter being the first rotary aircraft operated by the Australian Army and the last Sioux to be flown in Vietnam on 13th September 1971. Then there was the DHC Caribou, a combat veteran that saw humanitarian service in PNG, Indonesia, Pakistan, East Timor and Solomon Islands. What proved to be very popular was to be photographed in the cockpit of an F111. It was another enjoyable excursion! Retirees and semi-retirees CARPE DIEM and come and join us for fun, frolic, friends, didactic experiences and interesting speakers! We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 10.a.m. at the Forest Lake Hotel. More information page 35 of this publication.

Head lice help available for parents Queensland Health is reassuring families that help is available to guide and support their efforts to manage head lice. Queensland Health Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact. “Head lice are more prevalent in child care centres and primary school, as children’s learning and playing involves a lot more head-to-head contact. Although adults can also get head lice,” she said. Families are often frustrated and confused in controlling head lice and spend precious time and money on a range of treatments. The best way to control head lice is to check each member of the family once a week. If detected early, treatment can start quickly before large numbers of lice are produced. This way the head lice breeding cycle is broken. Queensland Health recommends parents use the ‘conditioner and combing’ technique to detect and treat head lice. This technique is an effective method to control head lice and it is safe, economical and avoids the use of chemical insecticides. “Simply apply hair conditioner to dry untangled hair, using enough conditioner to thoroughly cover the hair from roots to tips. Use a fine tooth lice comb to remove all the conditioner from the head. You will need to comb each section of the hair at least two to three times from the root to the tip. The conditioner stuns the lice, allowing them to be manually removed from the head,” Dr Young said. “As this method does not remove the eggs, you will need to perform the ‘conditioner and combing’ treatment every two days to remove the young lice as they hatch from the eggs. Continue this treatment until no live head lice are found for 10 consecutive days.” Head lice are fragile creatures off the head and quickly die from dehydration. They need warmth, moisture and blood from the scalp to survive. Comprehensive step-by-step information and fact sheets on managing head lice can be obtained from the Queensland Health web site: www.health.qld.gov.au under the A – Z of health topics.

EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A YOUNG LIFE Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care. 700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline. Every young person deserves a young life and you can help create change by visiting www.youngcare.com.au/donate

Garden Group by John Prout

The first month of winter is upon us, time to put the electric blanket on the bed, buy wood for the fireplace or just snuggle up under a warm blanket. Did you know that the month of June was named after Juno, the Roman Goddess of Marriage? Maybe this is why many women like to be June brides. Winter brings shorter days, giving us less time to spend outdoors, however, there is still plenty to do in the garden. I like the idea of not having to mow the lawn every fortnight. Although growth in the garden slows down in these cooler months, there are still plenty of tasks to complete. • Prune hydrangeas and take cuttings to grow new plants. Only cut back those stems that flowered last season. • Reduce watering of indoor plants in winter. • Plant hippeastrum bulbs with the top of the bulb protruding from the soil. • Plant new roses. A thick layer of straw around the base will protect the young stems in cool temperature. Next month on 20 July we will have our Christmas in July bus trip. What a trip we have planned – a visit to the Rosevale Homestead, a tour, tasting and a special Christmas lunch at the Ocean View Winery and finishing the day exploring some historical places in Dayboro. For further details or a flyer, contact Heather (phone 3879 2129) or John (phone 3288 3131). Cost for the whole day is an unbeatable value of $50 per person. Maybe this is why the trip is filling fast! Last month the club had an outing to Jerry ColebyWilliams home in Wynnum. Although the weather could have had less showers, our spirits were not dampened as it was a great opportunity to view his garden with so many different, and some not common, vegetables. I must admit I was interested in the aerial potatoes he had growing. At our next meeting our guest speaker will be Debbie Aitcheson from The Chilli Patch and the Qld Herb Society. Debbie will have a demonstration on Cooking with Herbs. Herbs have become very popular with gardeners and chefs as they require little space to grow and each adds their own special flavour to any meal. Now you cannot get fresher than that – picking your own herbs just before they are added to your cooking. This is one topic we have been waiting for, so why not come along and enjoy the evening with fellow gardeners? All visitors receive our monthly newsletter, lucky door ticket, supper and free plants donated by members.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday June 11th, 2013. Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place

RSPCA - Spot the dog This financial year you can help animals just like Spot find a second chance. Spot was just a pup when he found himself in a bit of bother. He was hungry and in pain, shivering in a cardboard box dumped on the roadside. He was desperately hoping to be rescued. Luckily for Spot, an observant passer by noticed someone stop in the area before the box appeared with Spot inside. Because they investigated, the RSPCA was able to give Spot the second chance he needed. The Good Samaritan brought him straight to the RSPCA Animal Hospital for help. Spot was in a bad way. He was anaemic and flea ridden, with a bloated tummy possibly from parasites. He also had a fractured leg. It was a lot for a young dog to bear. Spot needed several weeks of rest and recuperation, which is not an easy task for a puppy! A loving foster carer took him under her wing until he was well. The RSPCA responded to over 35,000 animal rescue emergencies in the last year. Unfortunately 25% of cruelty complaints from last year involved abandonment, just like Spot. This kind of cruelty is becoming all too common. Across the state, the RSPCA Qld Animal Care Centres cared for over 41,000 unwanted, injured, neglected and abandoned animals. Thanks to community support, animals just like Spot do get their second chance. Spot has now found a loving home where he can live the life he always deserved. Because there are so many animals just like Spot in need of help, the RSPCA wants you to jump on board. There are many ways you can help these animals in need. Visit the rspcaqld.org.au website to make a difference to an animal’s life today.

Each year we celebrate Queensland Week to acknowledge Queensland becoming an independent colony, separating from New South Wales. This year Queensland Week runs from June 1 to 9 and together we recognise the important achievements by Queenslanders. Locally, Queensland Week will see many of our volunteers across my electorate honoured for their services to the community. The local ceremony will take place on June 1 at Richlands Lions Soccer Club at 10am. This will be the sixth year I’ve teamed up with the South West Progress Association to honour those who make our community a better place to live. Award recipients work tirelessly throughout the year, often receiving little public acknowledgment for their contribution to our community. This event will be a great opportunity to recognise these efforts and say thanks to these hardworking locals. I would also like to pay tribute to the Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch President George Churchward and his committee for their ANZAC Day ceremony which I understand had a large increase in attendance. This can be attributed to the great work that the members of the Forest Lake Sub-branch have undertaken over many years.

Well here we are again; another month has passed by. Last month, a group of 34 members who travelled to Stanthorpe for an overnight stay. The trip up was punctuated with a stop at Boonah for morning tea, supplied by our bus driver Mark, then on through Cunningham Gap and Warwick to Stanthorpe for a two course lunch at the Stanthorpe R.S.L Club; a wonderful meal enjoyed by all. Then onto Castle Glen Winery for wine tasting. The wines are all made without chemicals and preservatives with a great variety. Sutton Farm was next where we had afternoon tea, some members where able to go and pick their own apples, also you could buy an assortment of goodies including apple juice and ciders all made at the farm. Then back on the coach to our accommodation, The Vines Motel & Cottages in Stanthorpe. Once settled on our accommodation, we strolled next door to Annas’ Italian Restaurant for a scrumptious buffet meal and what a meal it was. Then back to the Vines Motel for a relaxing night. Morning saw us in the dining room for a full breakfast to give us the strength for the day. Breakfast over, bags all on the coach we once again set out. This time we visited the Aloomba Lavender Farm, where the generous people from the farm explained all about lavender, then into the shop for purchases of lavender goods. Once finished, we could sit and have a quiet coffee, courtesy of the farm. Then it was on to the Bramble Patch, again more goodies, jams, jellies, coulis and other lovely tasting food to be sampled and purchase. Next stop was at the Ballandean Estate Winery where we had more wine tasting, a tour and a choice of three hot meals which everyone enjoyed. All worn out, we boarded the coach driven by Mark from Concorde Coaches, and headed back to Forest Lake after a wonderful two days of delicious food and wine tasting. Richlands Scouts Group News Each month we hope to bring you the latest news from the Richlands Scouts. The group provides fun and adventurous activities for young people (both boys and girls) from ages six to 17. The group is divided into four sections catering for different age groups. Each section meets regularly at the St Hugh’s Anglican Church, 105 Poinsettia St Inala. The Joey Scout Section is our youngest section and is for children aged six to seven. Joey Scouts is all about making friends, enjoying nature and having fun. In April, our Joey Scouts enjoyed a sleep-over at another den, went bush walking and sang songs around a camp fire. For Mother’s Day, the Joeys hosted dinner for their mums and made Mother’s Day gifts. The Joey Scouts meet on Tuesday afternoons from 5pm to 6pm and leader Tania can be contacted on 0402 308 182. The Cub Scout Section is for children aged eight to 10 and it’s all about adventure. As a Cub Scout you can enjoy bush walking, camping with friends, play imaginative games, show your creativity by performing in plays and skits and develop teamwork through activities and challenges. The Cub Scouts meet on a Tuesday night from 6:30pm to 8pm and leader Andrea can be contacted on 0411 847 437. The Scout Section (the original section) caters for young people aged 11 to 14. Scouts do anything and everything... all the fun stuff you don’t get to do at home! Whether you’d like to try camping, hiking, canoeing, sailing, rock climbing, abseiling, performing on stage in a Gang Show or sitting around a fire toasting marshmallows with a bunch of friends – Scouts has something for everyone. The Scout Section meets

Page 34 - June 2013 - The Lake News

on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, leader Geoff can be contacted on 0414 460 402. The Venturer Scout Section is for our senior scouts aged 15 to 17. As you approach adulthood, take control and lead your own activities. You may find yourself exploring the great Aussie bush, camping above the snowline, diving on coral reefs or earning your pilot’s licence. Whatever adventurous activities you’d like to try, there is someone in scouting you can help you achieve it. And if you’re focused on achieving great things in life; why not have a go at the prestigious “Queen’s Scout Award”. The Venture Scouts Section meetings vary depending on their activities and leader Allan can be contacted on 3372 9408. Did you enjoy scouting as a youth? We rely on the support of our local community and we are currently looking for extra leaders to help grow the group. Interested adults please contact Geoff Hunt on 0414 460 402.
