In late March, we enjoyed a trip down river on the Lady Brisbane leaving from Brett’s Wharf Hamilton. While cruising the river we were served morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Our tour of Government House on 24 April is now confirmed when the Governor will be in residence. The King and I at the Lyric Theatre in mid April is the theatre group’s next outing. A local golf club is where the lunch group continues to meet on the second Wednesday each month to enjoy good food, laughter and pleasant conversation. Early April the dinner group has planned a visit to a local restaurant. The Mah Jong group now meets every Thursday afternoon at our meeting venue and continue to have a lot of fun and friendship. Due to changes in the hours of operation of the Magpies AFL Club, the Scrabble Group now meets at 1pm at a nearby sports club. The book group continues to meet at a member’s home to discuss each month’s selection. The April book is Down Under by Bill Bryson. Probus is an association for active members of the community, and for those no longer working full time, to join together in clubs for a new lease of life. Its basic purpose is to advance intellectual and cultural interests among adult persons, to provide regular opportunities to progress healthy minds and active bodies through social interaction and activities, expand interests and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends. Due to Easter Friday being on our usual meeting day, Sherwood Probus will meet on April 11 which is the second Friday, where the topic will be Fire Ants. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club.
Groups invited to join Peaks to Points Festival

Environment and community groups based in the local area are invited to join the program for the award-winning Peaks to Points Festival. The festival runs for two weeks, from Saturday 19 July to Sunday 3 August. It will offer a program of interactive and exciting events across the southside of Brisbane, to provide people with an opportunity to enjoy and learn more about native flora and fauna. Events will include guided walks, bus tours, workshops, and planting days. The festival is held every two years and in 2012, 25 community groups from across the southside hosted more than 30 events over the festival period. The festival provides an ideal opportunity for local groups to showcase their work, attract new members and engage with the community. Once again, the Brisbane City Council is partnering with the Oxley Creek Catchment Association to present this important environmental festival. For further information about holding an event as part of the festival, please contact the Oxley Creek Catchment Association on 3278 2899 or email: ideas@teamlacey.com.au. The Peaks to Points Festival is supported by the Brisbane City Council.
Personally Speaking
If you read my last editorial, you would have noticed there was a rather glaring mistake. This is what happens when you cut and paste and don’t read over things before they go to print. Frankly, with four publications, I’m surprised I haven’t made this mistake numerous times! Making mistakes seems to come pretty naturally to the majority of us, doesn’t it? I come from a long line of people who ‘need’ to be right and who have trouble admitting their mistakes. Fortunately for me, I seem to make so many that I’ve had to get used to it and don’t tend to have quite so much of a problem with it as others! One thing I’ve noticed about us humans is that we are quick to point out another’s mistake but slow to forgive it; and we are slow to recognise when we make a mistake but quick to forgive ourselves and expect others to do so with the same speed. Most of us are full of double standards. One only needs to drive on the road for multiple examples of this. We cut across someone because it was ‘necessary’; when others cut across us, it’s because they are an idiot who can’t drive. Realising that we all make mistakes, and that we are included in the ‘all’, is part of maturing. It’s freeing to finally come to the point of truly accepting that we and those around us will make mistakes. The problems arise because we don’t all mature at the same rate. There are children who have grasped the fact of their own fallibility, and many, many adults who are yet to come to terms with it. So what we need more of when dealing with our own and others’ mistakes, is grace. Whether seeking pardon (like me right now!) or granting forgiveness, grace is what is required of us. We will ask others to overlook our mistakes, and if they are not yet in the place where they recognise their own humanness, we will need to extend grace when they show their displeasure at our mistake. When another comes to us after they have made a mistake, we can be gracious in our response because we understand our own need for forgiveness and grace for our mistakes. In all our dealings with people, we are going to be both the perpetrator and the recipient of mistakes; there is simply no way to avoid it. The question then remains: how will we respond? Imagine a world, a community, or a family, where mistakes are graciously accepted as a normal part of life. What a wonderful thing that would be.

Graceville Station one step closer to upgrade Recently, I announced that tenders have been called to upgrade accessibility Graceville railway station as part of the government’s plan to target disability black spots. The upgrade program will include installing lifts improving safety and access for people with disabilities and people travelling with prams, small children or luggage. Following a competitive tendering process involving short-listed companies, the successful contractor will be appointed and begin work immediately on the final design, with construction expected to start later this year. Stations are prioritised for upgrades based on a number of factors, including current level of access, customer patronage, nearby accessible stations, and facilities in the local community. Community grants made easy Community organisations will find it easier to apply for Community Benefit Fund grants of up to $35,000 thanks to a new, simple, one stop process. The Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund, Breakwater Island Casino Community Benefit Fund and the Reef Hotel Casino Community Benefit Fund will be merged into one, with the level of funding standardised. In the past, community groups have had to spend considerable time interpreting their eligibility for funding, depending on which grant they were applying for. By introducing one system for the whole state, we have also levelled the playing field to ensure money is going to the groups who need it most. The new amalgamated program is expected to be available for the funding round that opens mid-July and closes August 31, 2014. For more information on these changes and for grant applications, please visit www.olgr.qld.gov.au/grants/index.shtml Calling all budding fashion designers for Project SPF Young Australians have the highest rates of malignant melanoma in the world and research shows a barrier to greater sun protection in young women is they feel it is ‘daggy’ or takes too much effort. A new sun safety campaign targeting the state’s fashionconscious young women has been unveiled by Queensland Health with a chance to win a mentorship with international fashion designer, Juli Grbac. The new campaign, Project SPF (Stay Pretty Forever) highlights the physical damage sun exposure causes. Project SPF encourages women to make small changes to their fashion and beauty routines to improve sun protection. A key component of the campaign is a fashion design competition which asks young Queenslanders to design fashion clothing or a fashion accessory and upload it to the Project SPF Facebook page. Besides the mentoring opportunity with Juli Grbac, the winner will also receive a sun safe fashion pack valued at $1,000 and two runners up will receive packs valued at $500. Entries for the Project SPF competition close on April 31. For more information visit the Project SPF Facebook page, blog or Instagram www.facebook.com/ProjectSPF.

Save the Bilby this Easter
Frank Manthey, the cofounder of Save the Bilby Fund is urging residents to make 2014 an Australian Bilby Easter. “Australians will spend $157 million on chocolate this Easter. Many of these chocolates will be rabbits, which cause billions of dollars damage to the Australian environment every year. You can be part of the growing number of Australians who celebrate bilbies at Easter, not bunnies. Look for Pink Lady Chocolate Bilbies with Save the Bilby Fund’s logo.” The last two years have been an up and down battle for the Save the Bilby Fund. Darrel Lea had supported the cause of the endangered bilby but, in 2012, its stores closed and the Fund lost out on the $60,000 a year they were receiving from the company. But then, last year, Pink Lady Chocolates, owned by Fyna Foods, came to the rescue, albeit too late to secure an Easter deal with the major stores. This year that’s changed. Big W, Myer, David Jones, selected Post Offices and some specialist chocolate shops stock the Pink Lady Chocolate bilbies. Frank Manthey is hopeful of securing big players Coles and Woolworths next year. “We’d just urge everyone to buy a bilby and only buy chocolate bilbies with the Save the Bilby logo. That way a portion of every sale comes to the fund. The Fund receives 30 cents from the larger bilbies and 30c from a pack of ten.” Australia has the distinction of holding one of the world’s worst records for extinctions, with 28 species of mammal alone gone forever, and it has just taken 200 years for this to happen. Sadly, this has come about because of the things humans have done and introduced. The Australian Bilby is severely endangered. Fossilised bilby remains have been found in North Queensland which proves that the bilby has lived in Australia for millions of years. Despite the fact that the bilby is one of the fastest breeding mammals in the world, it has been driven close to extinction by feral cats, foxes and wild dogs. Rabbits also compete with the bilby for food and burrows.

Oxley Men’s Shed Update
by Jim Pascoe, Newsletter editor
The members of the Oxley Men’s shed have had a busy month carrying out hall maintenance as well as normal shed work. The boys have completed weatherproofing the eastern side of the building to keep out the rain and new doors (to comply with Building code requirements) have been fitted which will enable us to have our stage 2 building signed off by the certifier. The shed has applied for a grant to provide for hard carparking and soundproof fencing and is now waiting to see if we have been successful in our endeavours. Members made a visit to the City Hall in February and also the Maritime Museum in March both of which were enjoyed by all who attended. We were given a tour of the retired HMAS Diamantina and around the museum precinct buildings by a team of very enthusiastic guides. The idea of men’s sheds is to create a venue for men to meet informally and also to look after their wellbeing and this is certainly the case in our shed. One of our activities lately has had members undertake hearing tests, the results of which have been very positive. Each month, a member is encouraged to give a talk on a subject that they think would be appreciated by our group. It’s very interesting to hear the various topics that come forward. The inside of the shed is slowly taking shape and our large tools and machinery are being put in their permanent positions and used. It all takes time but we are getting there. The Sherwood-Indooroopilly Services Club has given us financial support to carry out maintenance and restoration of the seating around the top oval of the Oxley State Primary School which was in a very sad state of repair. A cheque was presented to Jim Pascoe by Club President Matt Conway and the RSL’s Sub-Branch Mark Johnston. This project is something that all shed members can be involved in. It was all hands on deck last Monday when the timber for the seats was planed in preparation for painting. Shed president John Brown is very proud of the very enthusiastic team that is working on this project. We meet every Monday for work and Tuesday for our social day with both beginning at 9.00am and finishing at noon. If you would like to join us, we meet at the St John’s Oxley Anglican church hall in California Rd, Oxley. We hope to see you soon.
Chelmer and District Probus Club Update
by Coral Reichman, Membership and Publicity Officer The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. In March, we held our first AGM and celebrated a very successful year, one of establishing the club and getting to know each other. With a growing membership, we are looking forward to forming more interest groups this year. Our speaker program has enlightened us each month with topics ranging from the story of Walter Taylor and the Walter Taylor bridge, a local landmark we all identify with, to the work that goes on behind the scenes at The Queensland Museum and the wonderful fossil finds that are ‘unearthed’ almost daily in Queensland. Our outings officer has been busy organising many varied outings for us to enjoy. At the end of last year, we had a wonderful morning at Government House, met the Governor and learnt about her role and the running of the house. Many of us had not been to Government House before and we thoroughly enjoyed this insight. We have a visit to the ABC studios coming up and we are looking forward to seeing how a radio station works. This, no doubt, will be followed by a lovely lunch at South Bank. At our next meeting on Wednesday April 23rd Dick Bennett the publicity officer from Brisbane Seniors On-line (BSOL) will tell us about this not-for-profit organisation and how it offers affordable computer training for seniors and over-50’s using volunteers. We will be brought up to date on current issues such as computer security, what to do with e-waste, phone fraud and much more. Come prepared with all your questions. Dick is also happy to talk to anyone about volunteering with BSOL. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. For further information please ring Coral on 3379 7540.

In a commitment to provide care to people who have suffered the loss of a mother, sister, aunt or daughter, Centenary Memorial Gardens will hold a Mothers Day Remembrance service on Friday May 9. Now in it’s thirteenth year, the special service is open to anyone in the community who has lost a female family member, even people who may have used a different cemetery or crematorium are welcome. This years service will include guest speaker Lisa Grosskopf. Lisa is a popular funeral celebrant who has assisted many of the families who have come to Centenary Memorial Gardens. Lisa will also be singing on the evening and presenting a photo tribute to women. “We can’t change the profound sadness a family feels at the loss of a mother but our services provide an opportunity to remember her and draw close to her in a non- threatening environment surrounded by others experiencing a similar loss,” said Peter Ship, Manager, Centenary Memorial Gardens. “Each year we try and present a service that is different but meaningful, just a casual relaxed atmosphere where people can take the time to remember their loved ones. “One year we planted 150 trees on the evening to create the Garden of Angels, another year we presented everyone with a pack of home-made cupcakes. Sometimes we hand out flowers that the family can place on their loved ones grave. “We have even been known to have spectacular fireworks displays, all as a part of honouring Mothers and celebrating their lives.” The special Mothers Day Remembrance service will be held in the Federation Chapel at Centenary Memorial Gardens on May 9 starting at 6.30pm. Guests are asked to RSVP before May 6 by calling Centenary Memorial Gardens on 3271 1222.
Hello Readers The world of work requires us to be innovative thinkers. In schools therefore it is imperative that we create the right learning environment where students learn to be innovative thinkers. With a strong values base, these skills can be taught through project work, community networks, mentoring, and working in the global space. Several innovative programs are offered at St John’s and recently students, teachers and parents had the rare privilege in hearing a guest speaker, International Speaker and Social Entrepreneur, Paul Dunn. Paul, a 3-times TEDx speaker and best-selling author challenged our community members to think about what it means to be an inspiring business. Focusing our attention on the Millennium Goals to eradicate poverty in the third world, Paul showed how businesses could give generously to this cause by making connections within teams, with customers and with the world in which we live. His Singaporean company B1G1 (Buy 1GIVE1) works with businesses all over the world encouraging them to be a business with the “WOW” factor. Young business entrepreneur Robert Hruswicki, a St John’s student who has recently established his own on-line business in personalized mobile phone covers was certainly inspired when Paul offered to mentor his business to become a Buy1GIVE1 champion. Many St John’s students go on to study in business related fields at university and TAFE and successfully establish careers or their own businesses. Old Collegians Awardees in 2013, Tony Nyguen and Siegmund Mitterstoger are fine and inspiring role models for our students as innovative thinkers who run inspiring businesses. At St John’s our Balance Life Program for students in Year Seven to 10 helps to raise awareness of the needs of others, develops a culture of spirituality, and inspires a sense of empathy and responsibility towards all members of the community. It builds important relationships with the wider community. If you would like to visit St John’s and get to know more about our Balance Life Program service activities in action please contact our Registrar, Janette Collins by email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au.
A place for INNOVATION St John’s is a collaborative, online, interconnected learning community. Our teachers motivate their students to use new technologies, to source real time information and to create and publish their work. They are being well prepared for a rapidly changing future.

There is research that shows that 40 years ago as few as 9% of cats and 3% of dogs were overweight. Today 41% of dogs and 33% of cats are overweight or obese, which is defined as the excessive accumulation of fat in the storage areas of the body, eventually contributing to adverse effects on health, well being and mortality. The destructive weight gain cycle in your pet starts with excess fat contributing to weight gain and additional stress on joints. This weight gain means your pet becomes less active and starts to experience muscle loss which can lead to signs of joint disease. Then the cycle continues as decreased activity can increase fat storage leading to obesity which contributes to the development of further negative health conditions. There are a number of factors that are risk factors for obesity in your pet including: access to food and diet composition, age, sex, whether your dog is desexed, and genetic makeup or breed. Talk to your vet about your pets current weight and find out their BCS body condition score. If your pet is overweight or obese, start a pet diet and exercise program. Remember weight loss can be achieved through: regular exercise; adjusting calorie intake; regular re-evaluation of your pet’s body condition; and a regular weigh in. Some points to assist may include accurate measurement of food intake using a cup or scales, changing to smaller meals to reduce begging, remove your pet from the table during the family meals, serve your pet a suitable low-calorie treats, increase the proportion of weight reducing wet food. Your vet can help by recommending a weight reducing dry food that has less energy but still meets overall health needs. The pet diet foods have less fat, adequate protein, addition of extra carbohydrate the addition of fermentable fibre that help to reduce stool volume, reduce constipation and support intestinal health. Overall, the health benefits of weight loss for your pet are the same as for all of us and include reduce risk of diabetes, increased blood pressure, joint pain, arthritis and lameness, difficulty breathing, liver problems, constipation and skin problems. So, talk to your vet about a plan to increase your pets exercise if they are healthy and get them onto a weight loss food as part of their weight loss program. It will take time but will be worth it in the long term.
Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison
Brisbane’s living treasure
Even when you’re 89, it’s certainly never too late to plant some fresh ideas. That’s just what happened with Sherwood Arboretum last month when it celebrated its landmark birthday with a community ‘planting bee’. About 50 volunteers, including the Pamphlett Sea Scouts, Sherwood Guides and the Society for Growing Australian Plants, helped transform the edges of the northern creek-line flowing into the wetlands. Council’s Habitat Brisbane program provided great support for the community effort to turn the creek-line into a new home for wildlife and to help improve the water quality of the Arboretum’s two lakes and three protected islands. The project is part of a partnership between our Association and Habitat Brisbane to help lift the ecological health of the wetlands, which are a well-recognised ‘hotspot’ in Brisbane for a wonderful variety of water and bush birds. Our Patron, Australian and internationally recognised ecologist, Professor Hugh Possingham of The University of Queensland guided our Association in a community project in 2012 to develop the Sherwood Arboretum Wetlands Concept. Council has given in-principle support to the concept which has three key goals - raising the water quality, stabilising the lake banks and improving the wildlife habitat of the wetlands. With the help of Brisbane landscape architect Jonathan Gregory and Habitat Brisbane, a staged approach is being taken to planting along the creek-lines and lake edges to improve the wildlife habitat and reduce sediment and nutrient run-off into the wetlands. This long-term planting project also will ensure a secure ‘green pathway’ linking the ‘wildlife corridor’ of the nearby Brisbane River with the wetlands. FOSA is seeking Council’s support to provide selected deeper basins in both lakes to improve water temperature stability and reduce sunlight penetration, as part of the concept. There will be a great chance to enjoy the Arboretum’s bird-life with a guided walk by Professor Possingham at 7am on Sunday May 25, starting at the Jolimont Street car park. The cost of $5 per adult includes morning tea overlooking the Brisbane River.

A
s I write this column, we are already in the planning for our various Anzac Day services. For some, Anzac Day will be somewhat of relic of a bygone era. In August, it will be 100 years since the commencement of World War 1, and next year, it will also be the Centenary of the Anzac landings. Yet, as I read my morning paper this Saturday, I cannot help feeling somewhat depressed. The headlines tell me of children bearing the brunt of Syria’s brutal conflict. I also have not long finished reading the latest email from one of my old Platoon mates, who now lives in the Ukraine. I read of Russian military exercises on the border of Ukraine, and of gangs of para-military thugs beating up people. For me, Sudetenland comes to mind. Whilst I not born in 1938, I was educated in my school years by people who were well aware of those times. My primary school teacher was a RAAF navigator in Liberator bombers in the Pacific. My high school history teacher was a Company Commander in Tobruk and was later to command his battalion. So whilst I came into this world at the very time the Battle of the Bulge was raging, I was shortly thereafter to learn about the events leading up to those massive conflicts of the past Century. For those of you not familiar with my use of the word Sudetenland, and have not heard of Neville Chamberlain, then use Mr. Google. You do not have to be very clever to start a war, in fact the opposite is true. The are no winners in a war. Some start them and some end them, but there are no winners. The devastation and loss of life is horrific. Look at Syria today. The cities have been smashed to pieces, more than five million people displaced and one and a half million made refugees outside of that country. When it is over, who picks up the pieces and rebuilds the country? Mr Putin? The leaders of Iran? Bashir Assad? I somehow think not. So this Anzac Day, think of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and all those who have placed themselves in harm’s way in their efforts to end wars. This year as always we will be holding our Dawn Service at the Sub-branch at 2 Clewly Street Corinda. For those citizens wishing to march, fall in is at 5am with the service commencing at 5.20am. The Graceville service, at Graceville Memorial Park, will commence at 8am, The Indooroopilly service at Keating Park is also at 8am, and the Oxley service at Bannerman park will commence at 10.30am. All are invited to attend.

Last year’s donation of hardwood sleepers was put to good use at the Graceville Community Garden. This past month has been one filled with diversity, development and diligence. The diversity of people who attend the garden’s gathering time each Sunday morning is vast. These attendees range from young to old and have varied backgrounds. I would find it difficult to consider another situation in which you would encounter such a diverse community sharing and the opportunity to meet others in your daily activities. Development wise Tim Auld has begun to timber edge the gardens and raise the height of the garden beds with a soil compost mixture along with creating a lot more of his fabulous compost. Honey abounds from the garden’s hive due to our long warm summer and bush tucker plantings have beautified the gully area behind Benarrawa Community Development house. I recently had another meeting with the Honourable Member for Indooroopilly and Minister for Transport, Scott Emerson, and to which our gardeners deputized me to enquire about the possibility of obtaining used railway sleepers. I wish to thank Scott for following through with this request and the donation hardwood sleepers from Queensland Rail will be put to good use in the gardens this month. We also wish to acknowledge and thank Councillor Nicole Johnston for her assistance in having council respond to the need for signage. This green information signage will be located on the corner of Oxley Road and Acacia Avenue Graceville and will alert passers by as to the direction by which to reach the community garden. We invite you to follow this sign ‘Community Garden’, and then stop once you have reached this destination and to have a stroll through your local community garden. Please pick any herbs and flowers but leave the longer growing fruits and vegetables to a Sunday sharing. Thank you to all who have contributed towards this community venture with such diligence, your contribution has been gratefully accepted and it is hoped that in your giving you have also received the richness of community. The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave and Cordalba St, Graceville. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday.
