Construction of the new Endeavour Foundation Packaging Solutions building and surrounds at Wacol has now been completed. This facility provides employment to over 220 people with a disability. The Rotary Club of Brisbane Inner West raised a total of $250,000 over two years to assist with M.DICK ad:45mmWx65mmH 20/01/10 12 the construction of the building and the members volunteered to do everything from running raffles, BBQ’s and approaching friends and businesses for donations. The fundraising sub-committee which included Robin Councillor for Murphy, new President Terry Barron, Immediate Past Richlands Ward President Bill Watson, Bob MacDonnell, Ken Saunders, Craig Smith, and John Gough, all worked tirelessly to bring this to Inala Library, completion. Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

We’ve all heard the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”. It’s a saying I have always liked, being the optimist that I am, as it implies the need to make the best of something and turn something sour in our lives into something sweet. I don’t know how many of you have made lemonade but it’s a family favourite in our house on those 40 something summer days when plain water just doesn’t quench your thirst. If you have made lemonade at home, you’ll know that you need more than just lemons. You also need water and sugar, and maybe a little mint if you have it growing in the garden. Have you ever not got the ratio of water, lemon and sugar quite right? Too much lemon and it’ll make your teeth curl, as my dad used to say. Too much sugar and it’s undrinkable, too much water and all we have is a watery tasteless liquid. I know I have made far too much lemonade on occasion by having to add just a bit more of this and that until, before I know it, I’ve made enough for three jugs instead of one. The saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade” is incomplete, really, isn’t it? You can’t just make lemonade with lemons, you need the other ingredients in the right proportions or else that lemonade is not going to taste pleasant at all. Just like in life, we need the right ratio of other ingredients in order to make lemonade from the lemons life hands us all at various times. Just like with lemonade, sweetness needs to be added, so too in life when a crisis or ‘lemon’ hits our life. We need the sweet things like a surprise visit from a friend, picking flowers from our garden to bring inside, watching a favourite movie with a friend, taking that day trip to a town you’ve always wanted to see. We don’t need much sugar to sweeten the whole batch of lemonade. We need that sweetness to balance the bitter taste of disappointment, loss and pain that life seems to hand out on an alarmingly regular basis. Without sweeteners, life is indeed just a bowl of lemons sitting on the bench. We need to intentionally add the sweetness. And we can’t make lemonade without water, the mainstay of life and a necessity to our very existence. We need mainstays. Whether it be family and friends, faith, job satisfaction, life purpose. We all need the basics in life, just like our physical bodies need water. So when life hands us lemons, we can indeed make lemonade but we also need the water and sugar and enough of each to make the living palatable. Maybe you can provide some of the sugar and water to someone’s life when they are handed lemons. Or maybe you can allow others to do the same for you when your life takes a sour turn. After all, what fun is drinking lemonade all by yourself?

Quality dentures now available locally

For residents requiring dentures, the need to travel into the city for high quality dentures is no longer necessary with the new practice, Essential Dental Care, right here on their doorstep. With over ten years experience in the dental industry making appliances for many dentists in the south Brisbane area, Dental Prosthetist, Mr Phillip Leong is well equipped to provide local residents with quality dentures. “The main advantage of seeing a Prosthetist, like myself, is that I do all the work on the dentures from start to finish,” said Phillip. “This allows me to have a better understanding of each patient’s requirements which means I can deliver a more tailored service and a higher quality product. “My patients appreciate the fact that the person they are seeing is the one doing the work and knowing that their dentures are made right here in Australia by a qualified professional.” Essential Care Dental is a new practice to the area, located at the newly finished Graceville Quarter Complex. The dental practice is operated by dentists, Dr. William Pham (B.DSc) and Dr. Nikhil Morriswala (B.DSc). The services of Phillip as a Dental Prosthetist are offered on request only and appointments do need to be arranged. The practice accepts all major health funds and the friendly

staff endeavour to help patients achieve the lowest possible out of pocket expense, keeping in mind each individual’s cover is different. Appointments with Phillip Leong can be made by contacting Essential Care Dental, in Graceville on 3333 2011 and are open Monday - Friday 8.00am to 6.00pm; Saturday 7.30am to 1.00pm and Sunday 9.00am to midday (taking appointments from 7.30am). Sherwood Respite Centre Seniors Expo Do you know someone who wants to remain independent and in their own home? Do you need help with the care of a family member who wants to stay at home? Sherwood Respite Centre is holding a Seniors Expo on Saturday 24 August to help answer your questions. The expo, which will be held at Sherwood State School between 10am and 2pm, will include displays from government and community groups dedicated to providing assistance to assist seniors to remain independent and in their own homes. An ACAT representative will be present to advise on assessment and aged care packages. Free light refreshments and entertainment will be available. For more information please phone Sherwood Respite Centre on 3379 1051 or visit their website at www.sherwoodrespite.org.au. JP’s and Commissioners for Declarations The Attorney-General, the Honourable Jarrod Bleijie, and the JP Branch are encouraging all JP’s and Commissioners for Declarations to ensure their contact details are correct on the register and to advise if they are currently active in their role. JP’s and Commissions for Declarations donate their time to provide an essential service in our community. With the recent changes to the Justices of the Peace system it is essential the Government and community members have access to an accurate register of JP’s and Commissioners for Declarations when they have need of their services. JPs and Commissioners for Declarations should contact the JP Branch on 1300 301 147 or email jp@justice.qld.gov.au. Changes to the Liquor Laws Fundraisers like trivia night and school fetes will no longer require a community liquor permit under new laws recently passed by the state government. These amendments will make it easier for organisations to hold an event without the burden of a complicated application process. Events such as these form an important aspect of non-profit organisations fundraising programs. To check if your event is eligible for the exemption visit: www.olgr.qld.gov.au/liquor/licensing/permits/community/index.shtml. Queensland Week 2014 To commemorate Queensland Week, communities across the state are encouraged to host their own celebrations. Sherwood / Indooroopilly RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Kevin Alcock

Page 6 - August 2013 - The Local News

As I mentioned in my column in the July issue of The Local News, we are holding our annual Kokoda commemoration service at the Sub-branch at 2 Clewley Street, Corinda at 10.00 am on Sunday August 11. We hold this service each year as our commitment to the veterans of the 39th and 49th Battalions, the original “Ragged Bloody Heroes” of the Kokoda campaign. They were the young, poorly trained and equipped militia force that were rushed to Kokoda to try and hold the might of the Japanese Army at bay. The surviving veterans of that campaign are all in their 90’s now and we will have a small contingent of them present at the service. Our speaker will be noted military historian and broadcaster Mr Patrick Lindsay. The Nation RSL President, Rear Admiral (Rtd) Ken Doolan AO and the State RSL President Mr Terry Meehan will be attending as will a number of wounded veterans of the Afghanistan war, who left Brisbane on July 17 to walk the Kokoda Track. We welcome those who wish to attend the service. I would also like to remind those in the community that the Sub-branch operates a free courtesy bus service for those visiting Greenslopes Private Hospital. This operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to commute patients, carers and visitors to and from the hospital. To avail yourself of the service it is necessary to make a booking by 5.00 pm on the day before by ringing the hospital on 3394 7033. We also provide free computer training to seniors in our area on Wednesday mornings at the sub-branch. You do not have to be a sub-branch member to take advantage of this but it is necessary to call the Sub-branch on 3278 6786 a few days before to book in for this service.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison

- Brisbane’s living treasure -

Our much-loved Sherwood Arboretum is marking 88 amazing years with a guided bird walk, free riverside barbecue breakfast and community planting day on Sunday August 11. There’s certainly plenty to celebrate, with this unique Arboretum now home to one of Australia’s most valuable collections of Australian native trees and a wetlands thriving with wildlife. Along the way, the Arboretum has survived floods, droughts, storms and even a challenging time when the wetlands were nearly turned into a landfill site. Leading Australian ecologist Professor Hugh Possingham will be your guide for a bird walk among our remarkable wildlife, starting at 7am from the Jolimont Street entry. At 8.30am, bird watchers and Arboretum supporters are invited to join a barbecue breakfast, hosted by the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) and Council’s Habitat Brisbane program. FOSA will greatly appreciate a gold coin donation to support our voluntary community work. During breakfast, FOSA will hold a very brief annual meeting - a good chance to find out more about the Arboretum’s bright future as it approaches its 90th birthday in 2015. At 9.30am, a volunteer community planting, along the river edge and in a new display garden for Australian natives, will provide a really positive way to celebrate those 88 great years. All you need bring is a hat and garden gloves for two hours of rewarding planting. Please spare a thought for the cooks and RSVP by Thursday August 8 if you are joining us for our riverside barbecue breakfast. Simply email ilovesherwoodarboretum@gmail.com or call 3278 6525 to book.

Corinda National Seniors update

by Ruby McFarlane

Corinda Branch of the National Australian Seniors celebrated Christmas in July at the July meeting. Prior to the lunch, we listened to the Police Pipes and Drums which was a huge success. The lunch was, as usual, a really nice meal, and appreciated by all in attendance. Our next bus trip is a mystery tour on August 27th. Our meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at The Western District Sports Club, corner of Oxley Road and Queenscroft Street. Morning tea is at 9.30am and the meeting commences at 10am. There is plenty of parking and train and bus close by. Come and enjoy a morning with a very friendly group. Call Louise on 3379 8315 for more information.

Sherwood Probus Club Update Retirement – everybody’s doing it – but Probus does it better.

by Pam Dale

In July, Sherwood Probus Club celebrated thirteen years of fun, friendship and fellowship with an enjoyable lunch at the Magpies AFL Club. There was much fun and laughter with a few competitions and a power point presentation of photos of activities over the years. Four members were presented with pins commemorating their 10 years membership. We have come a long way and have embraced so many extra groups and activities. The various groups are organised by members who have a particular interest or hobby. They are well attended and run independently from the Probus club itself. Due to the birthday lunch, we did not have a speaker for July. Our speaker for August is Les Ambor who will speak on Fun in Pawn Broking. The garden group continued their interesting meetings with a visit to the Riverside Park at the Tennyson Tennis Centre on the site of the old Powerhouse. A lovely morning tea at the café followed an exploration of the gardens. The magnificent production of War Horse at the Lyric Theatre was enjoyed by the theatre group. Twelfth Night Theatre has shows later in the year which our theatre group is very interested in. A lunch on the last Friday of July celebrated three years of the book group. Their selections for coming months are still to be decided. Scrabble still has an enthusiastic and happy group which meets each second Wednesday at 1pm at our meeting venue. The Mah Jong group is going well with lots of companionship and laughter. The dinner group enjoys monthly outings to local restaurants where good conversation and good food make the night. Every second Wednesday the lunch group meets at Jindalee Golf Club. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club (Magpies), Chelmer. Initially sponsored by Rocklea Rotary Club, our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, plus the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club. The Local News - August 2013 - Page 9

Repairs Soft Furnishings Bette King, the clubs Welfare Officer displays her beautiful quilt. The newly re-established Probus Club of Chelmer and District draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley. The new committee has established a quality speaker program and is about to launch their outings program for the last quarter of the year. Last month, two of our new committee members volunteered to give us a five minute cameo of their life. This is a wonderful way for members to get to know their committee and any member who wishes may also volunteer to share their life story at a meeting. Our Welfare Officer, Bette King, who has recently moved to Brisbane to be near her son, told us about her life growing up in Tasmania. She had belonged to the Probus Club of Newcastle before moving and mentioned how Probus can be an excellent club to get to know local retired people. She gave us a glimpse of her hobby when she displayed a beautiful quilt she had made. Clem Tisdell, our Treasurer and a retired economics Professor, spoke of his early education studying by kerosene lamp in Taree and Newcastle and subsequent varied career as an economist. Clem has published 70 books on everything from academic economics to the economic advantage of living sustainably with wildlife such as wild pigs and salt water crocodiles. We are all looking forward to our next meeting on August 28th when Scott Cadoo, Senior Librarian in the Brisbane City Council will inform us about ‘The Modern Library: now and in the future’ The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. Veterinary Voice by Diane M Sheehan BVSc

Dental care is very important for our cats and dogs. Regular care at home, daily brushing, using oral sprays, products for water and feeding special dental diets can help prevent the build up of plaque and tartare which reduces gum disease and promotes better smelling breath. It also helps prevent the need for professional teeth cleaning, and tooth loss. There are some important contributing factors to dental disease. Periodontal disease is more common in smaller breeds of dogs and some cat breeds. It is more common in older pets and poor oral hygiene and plaque build up can lead to gum disease, tooth loss and other more serious conditions such as heart, liver and kidney disease. The causes of gum disease include plaque, which is a film that contains large amounts of bacteria, which, if left unchecked, can build up on the teeth causing infection, ulcers and destroying gums. This results in the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth. As always, prevention is the best cure and can reduce the formation of plaque and help maintain proper oral health throughout your pet’s life. Some signs of gum disease include bad breath, yellow crusting on the teeth, bleeding gums, difficulty eating or a change in eating habits, tooth loss, behavioural changes, salivating and dropping food from their mouths. Your pet’s teeth can be cleaned by you at home using a pet tooth brush, or a spray to use directly on the teeth or a rinse to add to their water bowl. Cleaning your pets teeth and controlling tartare build up by using specific dry food diets is very important. Talk to your vet about the dental food available for your pet. The easiest way to prevent teeth and gum problems is to get their teeth checked regularly at their annual visit to your vet. Start an oral care program at home by brushing their teeth to remove plaque. There are pet tooth brushes available and chicken flavoured toothpaste and mouth washes that can be added to their water bowl. Dogs and cats do not brush their own teeth twice a day, like we do, they don’t visit the dentist for regular check ups either. As a consequence, periodontal disease and oral diseases affect nearly every dog at some stage of their life, regardless of the breed, shape or size of your pet. August is Pet Dental Health month, so take the opportunity to ask your vet what is the best way to look after your pet’s teeth.
