Happy 2015 I trust you have a very fruitful 2015. Remember the most important discipline for a new year is self-discipline. 2015 A year of openings and beginnings 2014 has certainly been a year of construction. At one stage there were six cranes on the skyline of Springfield Central alone. Openings include: USQ extension; Lagoon at Robelle Domain; GE State Headquarters; Orion Springfield Central (extension including Events Cinema, Target and Coles and specialty stores); Mater Hospital; New business precinct at vicinity; McMahons Swim Factory. Beginnings confirmed so far include: $550 million Dusit Thani 5 star international resort at Brookwater; extensions at Spring Lake Metro; planning of possible library and council presence in Springfield Central; apartment living at Springfield Central overlooking Robelle Domain. Date Claimers Free trees: Saturday March 7 ANZAC Dawn service – Robelle Domain: April 25 Carols @ Robelle Domain Thank you to all sponsors in particular our naming sponsor, Orion Springfield Central, for giving so our community can come together to celebrate Christmas. Thank you for all who made the effort to attend and to the team from the Greater Springfield Combined Church who plan the program. A spectacular night like this takes much planning and the carols committee will be planning for 2015 Carols already. Local Speed Limits Please remember all local roads are 50 kph unless signed otherwise. Remember “To achieve those New Year resolutions it will take more than a good intention.”

NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE

Goodna/Redbank Branch by Vera

Somerwill

Welcome to 2015, a new year, a new beginning. The festive season came and went before we knew it, I hope it fulfilled your expectations. Fifty National Seniors Goodna/Redbank branch members celebrated the end of the year with Christmas luncheon at the Springfield Tavern. The staff set up the tables beautifully with bon bons and tinsel, and the lunch was delicious. The spirit of Christmas was tangible and everyone got into the mood. It had been a tough year for a few of our members however this was balanced with two members announcing their engagement, so this cheerful celebration concluded the end of the year on a high note. We would also like to thank local businesses who donated towards our Christmas raffle, there were many happy recipients of the prizes, and the Goodna Leagues Club for their goodwill and assistance in facilitating monthly meetings. Organising speakers and outings for 2015 is well in hand, but for now, the branch will take a summer break. Activities will re commence in February with the social club meeting for coffee at the Coffee Club, Queens Street Goodna on Wednesday 4th February at 10.00am. Day Trippers will travel by public transport on Tuesday the 10th February to SouthBank to visit the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). Branch meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month commencing at 10.00am at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna. National Seniors is an independent member organisation that plays an important role in providing activities for members, a strong policy voice with governments of the day as well providing competitive services for Seniors Travel and Insurance and Research. Visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings, for further information please phone Val Randle Secretary on 3294 5735.

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2015 Page 2 - January 2015 - The Greater Springfield Times

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis One of my earliest memories of moving to Queensland from Tasmania when I was 14 was the storms. Tasmania just doesn’t get the same sort of storms that Queensland does, well, not in my memory anyway. Unaccustomed to the heavy stickiness of the air, even from early in the morning, I soon grew to expect, and dread, the inevitable afternoon storm. I did get used to it though and would happily dance around in the rain after all the thunder and lightning had passed over, enjoying the brief respite from the heat and humidity before it quickly built up again. We’ve already had our fair share of storms this storm season and are probably in for more before it’s through. Since the major flooding event of January 2011, I must confess to feeling more wary of storms than I used to be. I think, too, the warnings are more frequent and urgent sounding, due to people being caught off guard previously. When you live in an area where storms are likely, it seems to me that people go one of two ways: they are used to it and not particularly fazed by them; or their fear increases and they will go to great lengths not to be out in them and have pantries full of UHT milk and non perishables. It’s an interesting parallel with how we cope with the storms of life. Some of us, after experiencing setbacks will pick ourselves up and forge forward, others will retreat and avoid all risk-taking they can. And, as always, balance is the key. Just as it is dangerous to purposely drive into a storm and try to cross flooded roads, it’s a dangerous way to live if we draw no lessons from life’s setbacks and ‘storms’ and learn to temper our responses. It’s true, too, that cowering inside during a storm and not even entertaining the idea of venturing out 48 hours either side of a storm, is not rational, just as living in fear of what disaster may befall us, and refusing to take risks in life is no way to live. In life, we will face storms of all sorts. Some may loom over us, bearing down, dark and foreboding from the horizon and turn into just a few drops of rain and a couple of rumbles of thunder. Other times, we can be pummelled by hail unexpectedly. And yet other times, we can clearly see what’s coming, hear the weatherman’s warning and be fully prepared. The trick, I think, with life’s storms, is to be as prepared as we can be, yet not fearful. Significant storms, like the loss of a loved one, taken either suddenly or through disease and suffering can be prepared for by how we live our life and how well we maintain our relationships. Keeping short accounts, telling people how we really feel - both positive and negative, living in the moment and appreciating each individual’s unique gifts that they bring to our lives help us be prepared. How are you going to approach the storms of life as we venture forth into a new year?

Australia Day is a day to celebrate all things Australian and especially our the spirit of mateship and community. The annual Australia Day Icon Community event at Robelle Domain harnesses the colour that paints this great land, with ‘We are One’ as the event theme. The fun starts at 9am with a friendly cricket match between ‘Australia’ and ‘England’, a great lead up to the Fun Games Factor community games which will be held from 2pm-4pm. Then it will be time to sit back and enjoy the showcase events, tuck into some great food from one of the multicultural food stalls before finishing the night watching the fireworks at 7.30pm. “In true Aussie humour, we host our own version of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, the infamous Melbourne Cup and plenty more to keep you in stitches, said event director Luti Kubanameca. “It’s not, however, true Australia without the sounds of the didgeridoo and the crowds singing out ‘Hey True Blue’, so make sure your voice can be heard and come along for a great day. The 2014 Australia Day event was the first Icon Community Australia Day event and drew crowds of over 4000, with this year’s numbers expected to be even bigger. So grab the family, hats, sunscreen and head to Robelle Domain prepared to have a fantastic day out celebrating with the wider community.

THE CREATIVE heART

Creative out and about

Alan Tulloch’s life drawing at Icon’s Creative New Year’s Eve event.

The end of the year did not slow down the Creative HeART Greater Springfield team. Invited to take part in the Icon Creative’s New Year’s Eve event by Tina Vaka, Director, Icon Community Inc. and Luti Kubunameca, the team jumped onto this opportunity to make its mark in the community. With no time to spare, the group helped to decorate large letters used at the New Year’s Eve function display – ‘Creativity with Purpose’, a concept that has been very close to the group’s roots in the community and its purpose to exist. As the year was coming to its end and families were gathering at the Robelle Domain parkland to celebrate the year closure and the new beginnings, the group showcased its local talent and talked about the Creative HeART’s community offer. A number of lucky families walked away with a child portrait drawing, thanks to a Bellbird Park’s visual artist, Alan Tulloch. The Creative HeART Greater Springfield’s 2015 workshop program is set to inspire everyone and give people a small taste for various creative skills and techniques and to have a go at a range of creative activities in a friendly and local environment. The Greater Springfield’s workshops will be run from Cerebral Palsy League’s Springfield Service’s venue at 6/8 Commercial Drive, Springfield. For workshop details please get in touch either with Creative HeART’s contacts below or via www.cpl.org.au/contact/find-us/springfield. Come along and express yourself! Recycle your unwanted electrical waste With most charities specifying they will not accept electrical goods as donations, why not take advantage of the Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre? Springfield and surrounds residents wanting to dispose of old or broken electronic equipment can drop them off at the Centre and know they will be recycled instead of becoming landfill. Unwanted computers, laptops, printers, scanners, televisions and DVD players can all be placed in a special e-waste recycling area at the centre, or one of the drop off sites in Ipswich. E-waste is a term used for electronic equipment that are unwanted, cannot be re-used and have no re-sale or market value but can be turned into new products. Most of these electrical items contain more than 1000 different substances, many of which are toxic, making it vital for all e-waste items to be disposed of properly. The free drop-off sites are part of a National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme which aims to boost the recycling rate of these products from 17 per cent in 2010 to 80 percent by 2021. Local drop-zones provide householders and small business with access to free recycling services to dispose of unwanted televisions, computers and computer products under the provisions of the scheme. Drop zones for e-waste are located at: Officeworks Ipswich (Computer and IT accessories only) – corner The Terrace and Downs St, Ipswich; Lifeline Ipswich Warehouse and Lifeline Superstore – 128 Briggs Rd, Raceview; and Remondis Swanbank – Swanbank Rd, Swanbank. To find out more about opening times, site locations and disposal requirements, visit www.dropzone.org.au.

Greater Springfield celebrates New Year’s Eve in Iconic style New Year’s Eve saw crowds of over 7000 pack Robelle Domain Parklands for its third year running to celebrate in 80’s style the coming of 2015. This year’s event was themed around ‘creativity’ and ‘purpose’ with the Creative Heart group collaborating to erect a large ‘creativity purpose’ display before the night’s festivities. Many local residents contributed to showcases that gave platform for both emerging artists as well as established musicians. The night finished at 9.30 with a spectacular fireworks display. It was a great way to bring local families into the new year, as organisers look forward to an even bigger crowd this year.

Don’t ditch it, re-gift it! Did this year’s Christmas presents miss the mark? Not impressed with the joke hand towel, the ‘his and hers’ bath robes, rainbow socks, keep calm t-shirt, fluffy slippers, wallet chain, crazy pattern leggings or animal suit? “Don’t ditch your unwanted Christmas presents, donate them to a Red Cross Shop,” says Red Cross Shops General Manager, Kate Dear. “It’s been found Australians spend over $1 billion each year on unwanted gifts,” said Kate. “Instead of throwing Red Cros s Shop away your dud presents, why not re-gift them? All our shops are desperate for donations of unwanted clothing, bric-a-brac and gifts. “The proceeds from our shops help fund the everyday work of Red Cross such as making daily phone calls to elderly people who live alone, breakfast for schoolkids who might otherwise go to school hungry and clean drinking water for vulnerable families in the Asia-Pacific. “Donations can be delivered to any Red Cross store Monday to Friday, and in some busier locations, seven days a week. Unfortunately we can’t accept donations of electrical items, large furniture or mattresses and we ask people not to dump rubbish or leave large items outside our shops.” Red Cross Shops also welcome new volunteers, particularly over summer when many of the regular volunteers are on holiday. No experience is necessary and volunteers can opt to work as little as four hours a week, on weekdays or weekends. To enquire about becoming a volunteer, call 1800 811 700, email retail@redcross.org.au. The nearest Red Cross Shop for Springfield and surrounds is located at 32 Downs Street, North Ipswich, phone 3202 3176. “By the way,” says Kate. “If you’re looking to buy an unusual bath robe, rainbow socks, keep calm t-shirt, fluffy slippers, wallet chain, crazy pattern leggings or a cute alligator suit; check out your nearest Red Cross Shop!”

Dig Thomas the Tank Engine these summer holidays Thomas the Tank Engine fans will roar with excitement when the beloved blue locomotive and his friends visit The Workshops Rail Museum for summer fun at Day out with Thomas 2015 - with dino dig activities until 1 February. Hands-on Thomas activities will fill the Museum’s various exhibit zones ranging from dozens of Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway play tables to art and craft fun at the Imagination Station. Dino dig activities have been added for this year’s event with sandpits waiting for big bones to be uncovered by budding palaeontologists. Running the show as always, The Fat Controller will entertain holiday crowds with adventures from the Island of Sodor, and will pose with visitors alongside Thomas the Tank engine for happy snaps. Museum Director Andrew Moritz said Thomas the Tank Engine has stood the test of time since its creation in 1945 and is a great introduction to trains for little ones. “The powerful appeal of the children’s classic has evolved over the decades and continues to entertain a new generation with stories of adventure, courage and friendship. The event is an easy and fun family day out with interactive displays, train simulators and Workshops tours all in one location to keep everyone entertained,” he said. Most children need a haircut before the start of a new school year, so why not participate in the 2015 Cuts for a Cause community event, held on Saturday 24 January at the Camira Springfield Community Centre? The event helps raise funds to help kids from struggling families back to school in 2015. The goal is to raise over $5000, enough to sponsor at least 50 local families with $100 grants for back to school expenses. Cuts for a Cause 2015 will be held on Monday 19th through to Saturday 24th January with participating hairdressers and other businesses to donate a percentage of their takings over all or part of the nominated period. The community event on Saturday 24 January is $10 Back to School ‘No frills’ Haircut Day, where the goal is to do 150-200 haircuts in the one day at the Camira Springfield Community Centre and sponsoring salons. Salons and hairdressers participating for the entire week and on the community day are: Legends Hair Dressing, Epic Hair Design, Max’s Barber Shop, Kylie McQuilty, Sassy’s Skin and Beauty, LuxSheree Nails, Optimal Hair and Beauty, The Links Pet Centre (dogs), Risque Hair. For more information or to donate, contact Phil on 0411 021 153.

Keep man’s best friend cool this summer The summer heat is upon us with scorching temperatures for not only us humans, but for our beloved companions and surrounding wildlife. Each year the RSPCA receives hundreds of distress calls about animals - mostly dogs - left in cars in the heat. While owners are shopping, running errands, or chatting, their animals are left in an uncomfortable and life threatening situation. Even if parked in the shade with the windows cracked it can still be a killer to dogs. The temperature inside a car, in the shade, can exceed 40 degrees, while a car parked in the sun can double within just 12 minutes, reaching up to 75 degrees. A dog left in that heat will suffer horribly and die by the time the temperature reaches 55 degrees. Similarly, our wildlife can have a tough time coping in extreme heat conditions. Something as simple as putting out shallow containers of water can help birds, reptiles, and small animals cool down. If you see a pet left in an unattended vehicle, notify centre management, if in a shopping centre carpark, immediately with the car rego number and then contact RSPCA Qld 1300 264 625 or DPI Call Centre (13 25 23). If you see sick or injured wildlife please call RSPCA Qld 1300 264 625.

Vomiting and diarrhoea can occur separately or together as part of the same syndrome. Young pets, especially dogs, are very prone to gastrointestinal upset due to their age and the variety of things they chew on. There are many causes of these symptoms, some of which are obvious, others that are not obvious and require testing to diagnose. The list of causes is long with viruses, bacteria, protozoa, worms, poisons, foreign bodies being common primary causes and pancreatitis, liver and kidney disease being common secondary causes. The following advice can be given but if your pet is very sick, getting worse or has a history of a particular issue, early intervention is by far the best response. Vomiting If your pet seems otherwise bright and happy, you could withhold food and water for at least two hours. You can then offer small amounts of water every one to two hours for six hours. If there has been no further vomiting, the water can be given ad lib and a small amount of bland food (such as boiled chicken and rice) given. Feed small, frequent, bland meals for two to three days before slowly reinstating regular diet and feeding schedules. If your pet appears quiet, has profuse vomiting, there is blood in the vomit or it continues to vomit despite not having food or water, please seek immediate veterinary attention. Diarrhoea Do not offer food for 12-24 hours (only two to six hours in pups under six months old or miniature breeds as these small pets can become dehydrated and hypoglycaemic quickly). Provide plenty of fresh water. Feed small, frequent meals of a bland diet (homemade or prescription) when re-instituting food - continue for three to four days, or until passing normal stool, with a gradual transition back to the regular brand of food. If your pet appears quiet, continues to have diarrhoea despite not having food or water or there is blood in the diarrhoea, please seek immediate veterinary attention. Collecting a faecal sample for analysis by your veterinarian can be beneficial. Vomiting and Diarrhoea Pets with both vomiting and diarrhoea are best assessed by a veterinarian as soon as possible as they can become dehydrated very quickly.

ROTARY CLUB of Greater Springfield

UPDATE BY

Chris Steinback

Rotary Sets Goals for the New Year The four news magazines of Local News Publications cover 30 suburbs south of the Brisbane CBD, allowing you to target the local area best suited to you and your business. If you’re looking to increase your local sales, then with a combined distribution of over 44,000, and the potential readership of at least 100,000, these news magazines will provided you with a proven medium. Centenary News

Happy New Year from your local Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield! In 2014, Rotary provided clean water, improved maternal health, awarded scholarships and fought diseases like polio and AIDS in a global effort to improve lives around the world. We invite you to work together with us to make an even bigger impact in 2015. The fight to improve lives around the world is a massive effort that Rotary and its partners cannot do alone. We need your support to help ensure that Rotary clubs just like the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield can reach out to policy makers to join our cause and make a difference. Rotary made polio eradication its top philanthropic goal in 1985. As the volunteer arm of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has contributed more than US$1.3 billion to ending polio. This includes more than AUD$24.7 (US$21) million contributed by the more than 30,000 members of 1,114 Rotary clubs in Australia. Since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative launched, more than 2.5 billion children worldwide have received the oral polio vaccine, causing the incidence of the disease to plummet by more than 99 percent, from about 350,000 new cases a year to fewer than 420 for all of 2013/14. Rotary is also involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS through its emphasis on disease prevention and treatment, one of its six areas of focus. Rotary clubs sponsor projects to help those infected with HIV and hold school forums to educate young people about lowering their risk of infection. A Rotarian Action Group, Rotarians for Family Health and AIDS Prevention (RFHA), organizes large-scale Family Health Days in sub-Saharan Africa to deliver HIV screening and counselling along with a wide range of health services. Mothers bring their children to receive polio and measles vaccines, and adults come to be screened for tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and hypertension as well as HIV. The challenge for the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield, is to engage others through its effort and commitment to provide Service Above Self to change lives and provide a better place for our local and international community. Maybe ROTARY is for you. Maybe you would like to join with likeminded people to engage in an activity which is both fulfilling and rewarding. Take up the challenge and just give us a call and come along to our weekly meetings. You will be most welcome. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, or PR Director Chris Steinback on 0411 472 684.

New year, new smoking bans for Queensland Smokers are no longer able to light up within five metres of hospital grounds and school gates thanks to new laws that commenced in Queensland on 1 January 2015. New Year’s Day also saw the start of a world-first law subjecting e-cigarettes to the same laws as traditional tobacco cigarettes in Queensland. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift commended the State Government for introducing the laws, set to save countless Queensland lives. “These laws are an important step forward, strengthening the State’s action on tobacco control and preventing thousands of premature deaths from tobaccorelated disease,” Ms Clift said. “Banning smoking outside school gates will give parents peace of mind during school drop off and pick up, eliminating harmful exposure to second-hand smoke. “Hospitals across the State will become healthier thanks to these new laws, giving visitors and patients a breath of fresh air during their stay. “We are especially proud that Queensland is leading the world with its regulations on e-cigarettes – the new laws prevent them from being sold to children or used in indoor or outdoor public places, and ensure no promotion or advertisement of the products in retail outlets. “E-cigarettes are a significant threat to public health – no e-cigarette has been tested for quality, safety or performance by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. “There is a lack of long-term scientific evidence to support the safety of e-cigarettes, and it’s a serious concern their use could lead to nicotine addiction and the uptake of tobacco smoking among young people.” Cancer Council Queensland is continuing to urge the State Government to introduce smoke free spaces in State legislation, to further protect the public from harm. “Smoke free spaces at bus stops, taxi ranks, ferry terminal and pedestrian malls will encourage more smokers to quit, prevent young people from taking up the habit and protect the community from harmful second-hand smoke inhalation,” Ms Clift said. “We know that the majority of Queenslanders support smoke free spaces and want protection from the lethal effects of smoking. “We have made great strides towards a smoke free Queensland, with smoking rates declining 26 per cent in the past decade, but we urgently need designated statewide smoke free spaces to continue our progress.” Currently 500,000 Queensland adults are smokers. Around 3700 Queenslanders will die from a tobacco-related disease each year, with an estimated 300 deaths caused by second-hand smoke exposure. Smokers can obtain free information, practical assistance and support from Quitline, 13 QUIT (13 7848). Encourage your workplace, school, sports club, early childhood centre or local council to promote smoke-free initiatives by joining QUEST for free at quest.org.au. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.

a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison

Springfield Tower I remember very clearly in 2005 the announcement of Springfield Tower at Springfield Central. The room was packed with corporate and government officials in Brisbane when Maha Sinnathamby and Bob Sharpless made the bold statement in front of the then Premier Peter Beattie that a 10 storey Commercial Building would be constructed in Springfield Central. Many around the room were sceptical thinking that no one would invest in a ten storey building in Springfield Central.

The rest is history with the 10 storey Springfield Tower launched in May 2007 and officially opened in 2009. Recently I stood on the balcony of the 10th floor of Springfield Tower overlooking the Polaris Data Centre, GE State Headquarters, Robelle Domain, Orion Springfield Central, USQ, Springfield Central Station and Mater Hospital (picture above). What an amazing journey so far and the best is still yet to come!
