a pronounced technology focus and incorporation of a range of flexible learning spaces.

On Friday, 15 May, the Official Opening of the Creative Arts Precinct, Year Seven Classroom Block and Change Facilities marked an important step forward in terms of the College’s facility development on the Secondary Campus. It was very pleasing to have Professor James Morrison, renowned musician, the Honorable Kate Jones, Minister for Education, Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, and Mayor Paul Pisasale all officiate. James Morrison will be returning to the College on Thursday, 22 October, during which he will work with College musical groupings on both Campuses. A concert held that evening will feature James playing with selected College groupings for the first half, with the second half devoted to the James Morrison Quintet. The College is now turning its attention to the next major building project; a large Resource Centre on the Secondary Campus. The term ‘Resource Centre’ is used to describe a facility that accommodates the more traditional elements of a Library, combined with

Page 2 - June 2015 - The Greater Springfield Times

In October last year, I was fortunate enough to attend a CEFPI (Council of Educational Facilities Planners International) Conference in Portland, Oregon, at which one of the presentations was titled “Why call it a Library?” The presentation focused on a Californian high school in which a benefactor had offered $6 million to the school to build a paperless Library. The presentation journeyed through a history of school libraries, the consultative and planning stages, and arrived at the finished product; a large facility with flexible learning spaces, differing technologies, some more traditional library elements, with a mix of quiet areas and areas set aside for social interaction and also included the students number one priority - a canteen. This is an exciting project for the College to undertake and is central to the approach to learning at the College whereby teachers facilitate learning with students through active engagement in research projects. It is also a challenging project given construction will occur in 2017 and will need to cater for the changing paradigms of pedagogical practice as well as the speed of technological change. Personally Speaking Stacey Toole with Susannah Friis It seems to me that one of the biggest problems with us as a society is a lack of self-reflection. I’m amazed at the number of times when I’m chatting with someone and I ask a question that the answer comes back “I don’t know...I’ve never really thought about that before.” It seems that people don’t reflect and ponder on things like we used to. Obviously, too much self-reflection can lead to, at worst, narcissism or just plain old selfishness but it is necessary to have insight into ourselves, others and the world around us. And psychology backs up the importance of selfreflection and insight with many therapists recommending mindfulness or meditation in some form or another. I was listening to the radio the other day - and I’ll show my age by saying it was an ABC station! - and it was discussed that it is so important to allow children to process and self-reflect at the end of their school day, and how, often, as parents it can be easy to overlook this important part of the day. You see, if, as children, we have the opportunity to process the happenings of the day with a parent, we begin our journey of self-reflection. Without self-reflection, it’s harder to learn from mistakes, we go on to repeat behaviour that is potentially harmful because we haven’t been taught how to reflect on our actions and learn how to make different choices that will result in a more positive outcome. What we lack as a society is also what psychologists call ‘insight’, which is according to the dictionary, ‘penetrating mental vision or discernment; faculty of seeing into inner character or underlying truth.’ We barely know ourselves, so how can we even begin to have an understanding of others or the world at large? Some of you may have read this column in the April edition about noise and our need for some quiet - not just audibly but internally. I think the amount of noise we contend with on a daily basis is directly related to our lack of self reflection and insight. With so much else going on, with so many things vying for our attention, it can be hard to break away and just ‘be’. I’ve said it before but it bears saying again - we are human BEings, not human DOings. We desperately need to step aside from our lives, take a breath and take some time to think! And not only to think but to ponder, wonder and ruminate. Some of you may know that there is a labyrinth located at St Catherine’s Anglican church, 43 Macfarlane Street, Middle Park. The labyrinth is a wonderful way to take that time out - even just 15 minutes - to simply be alone with your thoughts and feelings and reconnect with yourself. The labyrinth is open to the public, available day or night, won’t cost you a cent and is just a short drive away. Why not make time to get some space in this fast paced life we all live? Drop the kids off at school, take a detour on your way to work, or whatever your daily routine is, leave the phone in the car and just...breathe.

Following last month’s article on Canine Parvovirus, it has come to my attention that cases of the closely related Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV), often referred to as parvovirus in cats, are being seen as well. The infection is no longer common in Australia and it is something that younger veterinarians have not yet seen. The first case to be reported in many years occurred at Lort Smith Animal Hospital, Melbourne in October 2013. Since that time, reports have included outbreaks in other areas of metropolitan Melbourne but the virus has now been documented nearly six hours north in Mildura, on the border of Victoria and NSW. Seven kittens aged five months and one 12 month old male entire cat, diagnosed by ELISA and PCR at Mildura Veterinary Hospital, are in addition to 31 cases that have been recorded over the past 12 months around Melbourne and the South of Victoria. FPV is highly resistant to physical factors and chemical substances. As with Canine Parvovirus, FPV can remain infectious in the environment for months. Infected cats shed very high titres of virus in their faeces and as such, virus can very quickly accumulate. Breeding catteries and shelters are reported to be particularly at risk. Importantly, cats that do survive infection can still shed virus up to six weeks post-recovery. Contaminated clothing, shoes, food and water bowls, cages and flooring, and even fleas have all been reported as potentially aiding the spread of FPV. The effects of infection are dramatic. Invasion of the intestinal crypt epithelium results in enteritis and diarrhoea. Invasion and replication in lymph nodes and the thymus results in depletion of lymphocytes. Bone marrow will also be affected and through the depletion of stem cells, low red and white cell counts develop. Foetal death will occur in infected queens and the developing cerebellum of the young is also targeted, resulting in cerebellar hypoplasia and ataxia. Other clinical signs include anorexia, fever, dehydration and fever. However, kittens may only present with ‘fading kitten syndrome’ whereby the kitten is normal one day, quickly fades and dies within 24 hours. There is no cure for this disease, and as for Canine Parvovirus, consists of supportive therapy only. Vaccination is the best method we have as an aid in the prevention of FPV. If your pets are not currently vaccinated, please get them up to date before we see outbreaks in Queensland.

Car enthusiast, Ian Bone had a vision when he opened MotorFocus a diecast model car shop in Westlake Shopping Centre some 14 years ago, that he would eventually establish a motor museum. In the ensuing years he sold the business but pushed on looking for that elusive museum opportunity. In 2006, together with a couple of diehard local petrol heads and the Ipswich Art Gallery, the ‘Colours of Motorsport Exhibition’ was put together to present a taste of Ian’s vision using much of the memorabilia and vehicles collected over time. It was very successful with 23,000 visitors passing through the doors over the 12 weeks it was open. Opening in January 2015, the Queensland Motorsport Museum in the Ipswich City Mall has already been visited by motoring enthusiasts from around the globe. The constantly changing displays provide visitors with a unique insight into a cross section of motoring history. There are both road and race vehicles of interest including the Peter Brock Dakar Rally Car, the ‘Etter Special’ 1937 Speed car and a 1971 Honda N360 barn find. There is original artwork, prints, photography from world renowned artists, as well as Motoring Memorabilia and over 200 Diecast Models. The venue, in the Ipswich City Square, is readily accessible with undercover parking and easy access to/from public transport. There is also mobility friendly access as well as being able to cater for community groups and car clubs which are always welcome. The Queensland Motorsport Museum facilities provide exclusive opportunities to acquire memorabilia, artistic and photographic lines, and access to an extensive research library combined with a small theatrette/meeting room. All facilities are available to create a unique experience in an exclusive environment for regular meetings or that special customer event. Expansion plans are already underway with the real possibility of expanding from the existing 380sq.mtrs to over 1500sq.mtrs – increasing the display capacity to over 70 vehicles and many more displays of unique motoring history. The Queensland Motorsport Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm for an admission charge that certainly won’t break the bank.

ROTARY CLUB of Greater Springfield

UPDATE BY Chris Steinback

When Mt Ommaney Special School approached the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield to help them in their endeavours with their Early Childhood Development Program for children with special needs, the Rotary club needed to look no further than to seek the assistance of gifted motivational speaker and Rotarian Tony South OAM AM, to contribute to the success of their dinner meeting held at the Spring Lake Hotel. Tony is an individual with very special qualities. Though a paraplegic, having been in a wheelchair since the age of nine, Tony has led a fulfilling and rewarding life. He has achieved multiple successes as a Para-Olympian in archery and table tennis at various Olympics and championships including being World Paraplegic archery champion 1968-72. He was awarded the Order of Australia Award OAM 1992 for services to the community and the Australia Medal AM 2008 for services to the spinal injury community. His current passion is managing community partnerships for the Paraplegic Benefit Fund, a not for profit benevolent organisation whose mission is to reduce the incidence of spinal cord injury across Australia. For information call 1800 809 780. Tony’s positive attitude towards adversity was an inspiration to all 80 people present at the meeting, and he spoke passionately about how he met the challenge head on, even at an early age, refusing to accept that his paraplegia was a impediment and he was different to the rest of us. Tony’s struggle with adversity connected with the efforts of the Mount Ommaney Special School and their dedicated staff who provide educational programs for children with disabilities and complex support needs from birth through to their graduation from formal schooling. The event raised $1200 for specialist playground equipment for the special needs kids, which was much appreciated by the school. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield have regular guest speakers at its meetings including the occasional after dinner speaking engagement. Maybe Rotary is for you. Maybe you would like to join with likeminded people to engage in an activity which is both fulfilling and rewarding. Take up the challenge and just give us a call and come along to our weekly meetings. You will be most welcome. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Tuesday evening at 6.30pm at Orion Shopping Centre Springfield Central. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, or President Keith Reinke on 0415 773 059.

State of Adoption Challenge is on again! Can you help Queensland RSPCA make it an historic seven in a row this year?

t’s on once again! In what RSPCA Qld staff and volunteers admit is a blatant rip off of the State of Origin series, the State of Adoption challenge has once again gone out to RSPCA NSW. This year Queensland is hoping to win an historic seven in a row. The goal is to re-home as many animals as possible from the start of the first State of Origin game to the end of the last. The toughly fought contest bears another striking resemblance to the State of Origin series with most of the adoptees having a bit of ‘the mongrel’ in them! “Of course, it’s a rip off on the whole concept but if we’re re-homing more animals, then it’s all worthwhile,” said RSPCA Qld spokesman Michael Beatty. “We will start as the underdogs, if you’ll pardon the pun, because Queensland has nine shelters, while NSW has twelve. But Queenslanders are used to that tag and it just stirs us on.” “Once they’ve seen the fantastic animals we have up for adoption, we know they’ll find their perfect match and for us the perfect match is Queensland winning by a cat’s whisker!” To adopt a new furry family member, simply go to www.rspcaqld.org.au/adopt/ and follow the prompts. Local counselling service celebrates five years This year, Westside Community Care Counselling Service is celebrating five years of involvement with the local community. This service commenced through the identified need for a local and affordable counselling service to be made available to the communities of Camira and Springfield. Since its inauguration hundreds of people have accessed assistance covering issues such as depression, anxiety, addictions, grief, trauma and couple relationship difficulties. One of the original counsellors, Julianne Cutcliffe has specifically undertaken further studies, graduating with a Masters of Counselling, to equip herself to provide care at a professional level. She reflects that it has been an honour to be given permission to journey with others through some of life’s most challenging hurdles. Subsidised by WCC, costs are $20 per hour for an individual, and $30 per hour for a couple. For more information about the counselling service please call 0425 623 400 or 3818 2915. Springfield Lake resident Alan Annis Jnr has a thirst for speed on the quarter-mile, and it is one that has definitely been instilled by his father, Alan Leslie Annis, of Willowbank. “I grew up watching Dad race and I always wanted to compete alongside him, said Annis Junior. “It’s great fun racing against my dad and it makes me try harder to give the old boy a floggin’. Fifty-nine year old Annis Snr has been racing for four decades, and regularly competes at his home-track of Willowbank Raceway, with his son alongside him in the Modified Bike bracket. “Racing alongside my son is awesome - bring it on. It’s just fun! said the 2004/05 Townsville Track Champion, 2008 Willowbank Raceway Track Champion and 2007 Australian Nationals class winner. “Willowbank Raceway is just like home, I love it. I modified my push bike as a kid and then I got my first motorbike - a Yamaha road bike that I raced. “This is such a great family sport – a good day out and a great chance to catch up with old friends from near and far. With bikes it’s just the thrill of the ride, said Annis, who has a new bike on the way and would like to thank Steve Kelly of PM Lubricants, Andrew Badcock of Pro Cycle Dyno, Tim and Scot of Speedy Motorcycles and Gavin and Blaze Hansen of Wizards Fabrications for their support. Father and son were both at the Fuchs Winternationals recently at Willowbank Raceway – the largest championship drag racing event held outside of North America – and were one of no less than five father and son pairings competing at the weekend on two-wheels across the Modified Bike, Competition Bike and Pro Stock Motorcycle categories. On this occasion though, Junior watched from the sidelines with engine damage ruling him out of competition at the last minute. Willowbank Raceway is Queensland’s premier drag racing facility, hosting hundreds of events year-round for everyone from amateur racers wanting to test out their vehicles on the quarter-mile during test and tune events, to professional racers responsible for flame-throwing Top Fuel dragsters capable of traversing the quarter-mile in less than five seconds at more than 500 kilometres per hour. Pumping heart of Robelle Domain Lagoon Cr David Morrison said he is very excited as Saturday 5 September approaches for the official opening of the Robelle Domain Lagoon. The Lagoon is approximately 3500m2 in size and holds 2.75 million litres of water. Not many will see the filtration units and the pumps that keep the water in a healthy state for all to enjoy. Ipswich City council has invested heavily in state of the art filtration units that will filtrate the 2.75 million litres of water every two hours. Cr David Morrison stressed that whenever he speaks to any media regarding the Lagoon to remind parents that it is law that all children 12 years or younger, regardless of their swimming ability, must be supervised by someone over 18 years of age at all times. Council will do all it can regarding safety around the Lagoon, however, parents must be vigilant in supervising their children once the lagoon opens. Pictured right: Cr David Morrison gets a firsthand look at the filtration system that will ensure all can swim knowing the water is in a healthy state.

On Saturday 24 October, Westside Community Care will be holding its 18th annual but first ever McDonalds Greater Springfield sponsored Run For Life at Robelle Parklands, Springfield Central. This fun event has been one of Springfield’s premiere community sporting events over the years and has continued to grow, last year attracting a crowd of over 15,000 people including 1000 walk/runners to enjoy the festivities. The event aims to bring the community, corporate bodies, athletes and families together, in addition to raising funds for Westside Community Care and local chaplaincy services. The McDonalds Greater Springfield Run for Life will feature: 1km Family Walk/Run (4.30pm), 2km Dog Walk (4.45pm), 10km Run (5.15pm), free on-stage entertainment, market stalls and family priced rides, Glow 5k Fun Run (6.15pm). Simultaneous with the event this year, will be Springfield Christian Family’s eighth annual Battle of the Bands and Sing UP talent quests, the Lanterns in the Park markets, and fireworks, all in the beautiful newly expanded, Robelle Parklands. Pastor Phil Cutcliffe said, “Over the last few years, the event has been growing strongly but we haven’t been able to find a naming rights sponsor. “We are thrilled to have McDonalds Springfield on board this year, not just providing cash sponsorship and prizes but getting involved and helping organise and promote the event. This will bring fresh life to the event and make it grow even further. “Lisa McIntosh, new owner of both Springfield Lake and Orion McDonalds has given her full support behind Westside Community Care and our community, not only sponsoring the Run for Life but the Family Funday, Loan Market Golf Day and has agreed to donate two Mc Cafe coffee machines to the Springfield Lakes and Camira Springfield Community Centres.” The organising team are looking for further sponsors and volunteers to get behind this years event. For further information please contact Ps Phil Cutcliffe on 0411 021 153 or send an email to phil@westsidecommunitycare.org.au.

VIEW Clubs of Australia is marking its 55th anniversary in 2015, with VIEW Club members using the anniversary celebration as an opportunity to extend an invitation to any local women keen to meet new people and forge new interests. VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women and was established by children’s charity The Smith Family to offer women the opportunity to have their voices heard on issues of national interest and provide a service to the community. Over 55 years it has grown to become one of Australia’s leading women’s volunteer organisations, supporting the education of disadvantaged children through The Smith Family’s educational support programs. Fifty-five years ago women were discouraged from speaking their minds and pursuing business and community interests but VIEW offers members the chance to do exactly that, in addition to pursuing a raft of leadership, fundraising and volunteer opportunities through the organisation. VIEW members come from all walks of life and the 350 clubs have spread throughout Australia since 1960 into every state and territory. Clubs meet regularly to provide members with an outlet to help others, as well as establish lasting friendships and contribute to the local community. VIEW supports The Smith Family so that young Australians in need can get the most out of their education and create better futures for themselves. In addition to raising awareness and fundraising, VIEW members can volunteer their time and talents in a number of ways. Members can read with local children to advance their literacy skills; help children with homework after school at Smith Family Learning Clubs; act as mentors for students; make library bags; donate school stationery packs for use at home and school and donate funds for toys and books for children in need at Christmas time. Clubs are always looking for women from all backgrounds and ages to join. It is vitally important that memberships continues to grow, so that the volunteer work with The Smith Family and local children and families support can continue. To find out more about VIEW visit the website at www. view.org.au or call 1800 805 366.

Goodna/Springfield

Probus Club Update by Pat van der Beek Welcome to the June column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. Hope you are all enjoying the cooler days which lend themselves to lovely warming casseroles, soups and puddings. Nothing like a mug of hot cocoa on these crisp evenings! The outing for May was a breakfast barbecue at Robelle Domain followed by quoits, boules and (balloon) tunnel ball! Though we were a comparatively small gathering, a hearty breakfast and a hilariously good time were had by all. The women’s team showed their superiority at ball games even though the men cheated outrageously. In June, we will be heading to the city by train for a look at the beautiful Roma Street parklands and lunch at the Melange Café. Keen walkers can head into the city after lunch while those who prefer a more sedentary outing can head home at their own convenience. We had hoped to incorporate the City Hall lunch time concert into this outing but there is a break in the music calendar at that time so we will save that for another outing. In July, we are off to visit the cows and robots at the Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum, 17 kms outside Beaudesert. We are carpooling for this outing and will leave from the Hall in Bruce Lane at 8.30am sharp. We will take a brief comfort break in Beaudesert where there may be time for a quick coffee (own arrangements). After the Dairy tour, we will head to Veresdale Hotel for lunch. Dairy admission is $16 payable on the day, lunch at own cost. This month is our annual Towel Drive. Each June for the past several years, our club has held the drive for local organisation, ‘Giving with Love’. This dedicated group of people provide care packages for at-risk children and our club aims to donate one new towel from each club member for this very worthy cause. Last year saw two carloads of new towels donated, hopefully we can better that this year. Monthly coffee date for July is Friday 17 July at the café at Robelle Domain.Monthly pub lunch for July is at Spring Lake Hotel on Tuesday 28 July. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Joe on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Joe on 0417 288 390 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Not only does the Creative HeART meet once a month to chat and plan their next adventure, the group also take part in regular pop-up shops, displays, exhibitions and demonstrations. The Creative HeART also has a busy workshop schedule for 2015 with classes on a broad range of topics such as felting, ceramic painting, photography and a drawing masterclass which will be held over a number of weeks. Last month’s fun and hands-on meeting saw The Creative HeART make a supportive alliance with Omnia Bookshop. Located on the Unversity of Southern Queensland campus. Omina Books and Beyond stock a lot more than just textbooks and pens and have a wide range of art supplies in store and what isn’t on the shelf can more than likely be ordered in. :WYPUNÄLSK )YHUJO update by Allen O’Toole, acting President Hello from National Seniors Springfield Branch. Our meeting in May was attended by 30 members and guests. Everybody enjoyed the meals provided by Springfield Tavern, at $12 each for seniors, they are great value. A talk on Senior Entrepreneurship was then presented by Raylee Huggett. This was most interesting as Raylee described other ways of getting an income after retirement. Our next meeting is at 6.30pm on 17th June at Springfield Tavern. Entry is $5 with light refreshments provided. The programme for the evening is still to be decided but we will make sure it will be interesting. Come along to meet new friends and have a night out. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at Springfield Tavern. The committee is also looking at other activities such as movie nights, BBQ, maybe join in the Taverns trivia nights on Thursdays. Any suggestions will be most welcome. If you have any queries, contact Allen on 0400 525 803 or email aotool11@gmail.com. Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR OXLEY

As many of you would know by now, I have made the decision to not contest the next federal election. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my constituents in the electorate of Oxley for their constant support and faith in me as their representative in Canberra since 1998. It is always a great honour to be given the opportunity to serve one’s community and I am exceptionally thankful for that privilege. There are many people whom I must thank including my family and friends who have been of great support over my long career and acknowledge the effort and sacrifice they continue to make. I would like to thank the volunteers and the branch members who have dedicated so much of their time to not only support me and my staff, but to the entire electorate. I want to thank my Electorate Office staff Chris Ramsay, Pam McCreadie, Amy Ketter and Winston Harris and the many other staff and volunteers who have worked for me and the people of Oxley over a very long period of time. It is because of their hard work that we have been able to achieve so much. I am proud that I made a difference in our community since being elected in 1998 and have treasured the relationships with the many community organisations, the many multi-cultural groups, people and characters that make the western corridor of Brisbane and Ipswich such a wonderful place to live and raise a family. At the last election, I made a commitment to the people of Oxley to serve them for the complete term of this Parliament and I will honour that commitment in full right up to election day. My Electorate Office will continue to provide you and the electorate with full service and I encourage you to give us a call if we can be of any assistance.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk WITH THE MAYOR - COUNCILLOR PAUL PISASALE For many years I have been an enthusiastic supporter and participant in the Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout, a huge effort that raises millions of dollars around Australia for St Vincent de Paul’s tremendous work to reduce homelessness in Australia. One night out in the winter’s cold is a small sacrifice to help raise awareness of homelessness around Australia, a terrible thing and something we have no excuse for in a country as rich as ours. Thank you to everyone who has donated and offered their support for my participation, you helped Ipswich make a real difference. There are more than 100,000 Australians who find themselves homeless each night of the year and the annual CEO Sleepout is a way for business and community leaders to raise funds and awareness in support of homeless services across the country. Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones is a fun-filled hilarious, shadow-puppet show full of surprises, performed by Jeff Achtem of Bunk Puppets at the Ipswich Art Gallery this month. The kids will not want to miss this one. In each scene, the audience watches as Bunk Puppets transforms junk into hilarious live cartoons. A feast for the imagination! Come play in the dark. For more information visit www.ipswichartgallery.qld.gov.au/ It is hard to believe but the Ipswich Civic Centre, Ipswich’s home of performing arts, is turning 40 this year. Come down and join the community celebrations from July 17 to 19. A huge open day on July 19 will include street buskers, roving performers, community performances and a Performing Arts Expo for the whole family. Exhibits of memorabilia and photos from the many events held over 40 years will be on display and there will be an opportunity to explore the centre with behind-the-scenes guided tours. And in very special news, one of Australia’s most beloved songstresses, the extraordinary Kate Ceberano herself will be joining us to celebrate at a one night only concert on the Saturday evening – July 18. This is going to be a top flight weekend of celebrations, so to find out more and to book your tickets jump on www.ipswichciviccentre.com.au.

a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison

Polaris Data Centre I remember Polaris data Centre being launched in 2007 and officially ‘locked down’ in 2009. Before the ‘lockdown’ I had the rare opportunity to look through this very secure and unique building. Two of the most important features of Polaris Data Centre is the temperature control and the guarantee of power supply. The day I had a look through the building, hundreds of

portable heaters were operating to bring the building to operating temperature and to test the air conditioning of the building. Polaris is a six story building with very few windows and each floor has rows and rows of data storage boards as its main purpose is to store back up data for anyone or organisation on the planet. Before Polaris was built, Springfield Land Corporation invested heavily in bringing in its own ‘dark’ or private fibre to enable Polaris to be listed amongst the most secure data centres in the Southern Hemisphere.

Councillor’s Comments by Cr Sheila Ireland (Division 9) 3810 6231 or Div9Office@ipswich.qld.gov.au Council is just weeks away from handing down its 2015 - 2016 Budget. Many hours have been spent by councillors and council officers determining the items that will be funded in the budget in much the same process as balancing a household budget. This month we have officially welcomed the staff of GE Australia to Ipswich with the establishment of the company’s new Queensland headquarters at Springfield Central. This means the majority of its Queensland office-based employees are now based in the company’s new purpose-built office building on David Henry Way. On behalf of council and the city I welcome them to Ipswich. We are now also looking forward to the opening of the Mater Private Hospital Springfield before the end of 2015. I am told that the construction is on track and going well. I know that the community is looking forward to the opening of this wonderful new facility in Springfield Central which will be a tremendous addition to the medical and health services available not only in our city but in this region. Talking about things taking shape, another facility which is rising from the ground as we speak is the wonderful Robelle Domain Lagoon. Water has now been added to the lagoon and we are all starting to get very excited about seeing this open soon. The lagoon has been specially designed to cater for all ages and will be divided into three sections with an area for babies and toddlers on each side of the lagoon complementing the main swimming area. Council is already busily making plans for Seniors Week which runs this year from year from August 15 to 23 with a diverse range of activities to be held in the Ipswich region. The activities planned include a Seniors’ Week Variety Day, the Day of Creativity, the Safer Seniors’ Program and the Seniors Cinema Day. For more information call Karri Browne on 3810 6646 or visit council’s website at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au Local resident Sirle Adamson is working to establish the Greater Springfield Single Parents Organisation. The group aims to meet monthly and provide a support network. Inquiries can be directed to Sirle on 0431 011 151 or email sirle.adamson@gmail.com Finally, I would ask that residents using local parks ensure that the lids to all rubbish bins are closed after use. It is vital that birds in the area, such as crows, are unable to get inside and spread the rubbish around. Please contact my office on 3810 6231 to report any instances of overflowing bins in parks and we will get those attended to.

NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE

Goodna/Redbank Branch by Vera

Welcome to the start of winter, time to rug up and keep warm. Recapping activities for the later part of May, Gay Ferris, Financial Advisor from the Department of Human Services presented a most interesting talk about services available to concession card holders, this was followed up by many questions from the members. Zone 101 Chair, Dr. Marjorie Green visited the branch meeting to publicize the coming Zone Conference, her final one as she has decided to retire and move onto other things. Congratulations Marjorie on a job well done over the past years. The Zone Conference also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Centenary, Sunnybank and Corinda clubs, not a bad achievement. Day trippers had a tale or two to tell about their adventures and most informative bus tour of Sandgate district using their GoCard. For the 16th June Branch meeting there will be a change in tone with entertainment by Andrew Carins from Renaissance, the theme being ‘Every Song has a Story’. A reminder, the 1 July Morning Coffee Club will be held at the Olive and Bean Café, Collingwood Park at 10.00am and Day trippers on Tuesday 14 July will take the Brisbane Explorer ‘hop on, hop off ’ bus to visit some of Brisbane’s interesting buildings. The Goodna/Redbank Branch meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna at 10.30am. For further information, please contact Branch secretary, Val Randle on 3297 5735.
