Local students off to Olympiad in the UK
Four students at the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) at Toowong have been successful in winning the OzCLO (Australian Computational & Linguistics Olympiad) and will now represent Australia in the International Linguistics Olympiad to be held in The winning QASMT students (l-r) Rebecca Day, Manchester, UK between Alexandra Grant, Laura Boyle, and Martyna Judd. 22-26 July 2013. The OzCLO competition is a Computational and Linguistics Olympiad and round one was held in March 2013. Gifted and talented students from Years 9-12 with a keen interest in English, languages, computing, and solving puzzles and problems, were invited to participate in this exciting team-based national competition. The team, comprised of Year 12 students Rebecca Day and Alexandra Grant, and Year 11 students Martyna Judd and Laura Boyle, entered the Queensland leg of OzCLO and tied for third place and were subsequently invited to participate in the National Final in March. The girls worked tirelessly prior to the finals and their efforts were rewarded as the team were named ‘National Champions’ and given the opportunity to compete against teams from around the world in July. “We are very proud of our daughters’ achievements and their efforts have provided Queenslanders with the opportunity to put one of the State’s highest achieving schools on the world map. We are confident that our OzCLO team will certainly try their hardest at the UK finals and whatever the outcome, their attendance and commitment to the project will certainly mark their school, state and country amongst other world greats,” said parent Tom Boyle. All families involved are required to fund the girls’ travel costs themselves with the assistance of OzCLO and the Griffith University Linguistics Department. I think you would all agree that we are living in a digital age. Technology is now such an integral part of our day to day lives that it’s hard to remember how we used to do things previously. I admit that I love new technology. I would be lost without my iphone and am amazed at people who disparage the internet and all it’s uses. Yet, in many other ways, I am oldschool. I still like to buy CD’s and nothing can replace that new-book smell or the weight of one in my hands. I prefer to actually go into a shop instead of buying online and, as much as I like to play games on my phone, nothing beats a board game with family and friends. There is pressure on all of us to ‘get with the times’, personally and professionally. What you are holding in your hand as you read this is testament to the fact that there is still a place for ‘flesh and blood’ publications, and we are not going anywhere! As long as people keep reading our publications and advertisers keep telling us how much it benefits their business to advertise with us, we will keep producing them. However, we do listen to feedback. There is a need to bridge the gap between what we currently have and the digital age in which we live. If you are a long time resident of the area, the name Berry might be familiar to you. Irish immigrants, Thomas and Margaret Berry together with their six sons and one daughter, first arrived in the area 150 years ago this year and many of their descendents are still residing in the areas of Sherwood, Oxley, Graceville, Chelmer and surrounds. Roslyn, great grand daughter of Joseph Berry who settled in Sherwood, has now moved from the local area but has organised, together with other family members, a reunion and celebration of this impressive milestone. Settling in the area in 1863, Thomas Berry and two sons worked and lived on a farm owned by William Dart where the Graceville railway station is now. Thomas soon bought his own land in what is now Sherwood, where he and Margaret lived the rest of their lives, farming the area with crops such as maize and potato. Commencing sugar cane farming, Thomas eventually erected a sugar cane crushing mill, employing up to 50 men at the height of the season. Thomas and the whole family were heavily involved in building the local community, with Thomas being instrumental in acquiring land for the first Church of England (now Anglican) in Sherwood. The first St Matthews Anglican Church was located near Oxley Creak on the corner of Sherwood Road. After the second St Matthew’s church building burnt down, a third church was built on the corner of Sherwood and Oxley Roads where it still stand today. Joseph, William and Elizabeth attended what is now Sherwood State School, with Joseph being a foundation student when it opened as West Oxley State School in 1867. Five generations of the Berry family have attended this school. Most of the children built homes in the area and raised their families. With some descendents still living on the original land, the family remain active participants of the church and many other community groups such as Girl Guides, Scouts, the Oxley Sailing Club, and are members of the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum and the Oxley-Chelmer History Group. A family reunion of four generations of descendents will be held, fittingly, in the St Matthews Anglican Church Hall on June 8. Family members are looking forward to sharing photos and memorabilia as well as much loved and treasured memories of their shared past.

Flashing traffic lights for Sherwood State School Walking to and from school will be safer for children and parents at Sherwood as the state school has been included in the latest round of schools to benefit from flashing traffic lights. There is a lot of traffic around Sherwood State School and I am pleased to have been able to secure the lights which will increase safety within the electorate. Children and traffic can be a dangerous mix and the flashing lights will be another reminder to drivers to slow down around the school. Queensland Plan Mackay Summit I was extremely proud to invite three representatives from the electorate, Dr Murray Bingham, Jutta Godwin and Brenton Kanowski, to the Mackay Summit last month. All three delegates participated with enthusiasm on the day. More than 400 community, industry and government representatives attended the Summit which was only the first step in the Queensland Plan journey. It is now up to the whole community to have its say on the state’s future. Local community engagement events are being planned so the community can share their views with our delegates. Also you can contribute to the shaping of the long-term future of the state through the Queensland Plan website at www.qld.gov.au/queenslandplan. Buy locally and support our community Don’t forget the government’s ‘Think Queensland and Buy Locally’ campaign. One dollar spent at a local business returns five times that amount through employee wages, rates and the purchase of materials and supplies Round Two of Everyone’s Environment grants program opens I encourage our local community groups that support and protect the natural environment to apply for Round Two of the Everyone’s Environment grants program. The extreme weather events of the last few years have meant there is a need to focus on activities that build resilience and this grant will help those groups and volunteers who work hard to restore some of our damaged eco-systems. This grants program helps local communities make a real and direct contribution to tackle local environmental concerns starting in their own neighbourhoods. Individual grants between $2,000 and $100,000 are available for projects like treeplanting, run off reduction and water quality improvement, community and waterway clean-ups, threatened and priority species habitat restoration and rehabilitation and monitoring pollutants in streams. Round Two Guidelines and a link to the online application form is available at www.ehp.qld.gov.au.

Corinda State High School is looking for local orchestral musicians to join their new Youth Orchestra. Anyone in the community aged between 11 and 20 years old can audition for brass, percussion, strings and woodwind musicians. Rehearsals will be once a week on a Wednesday between 4pm and 6pm at Corinda SHS. There will be chances to perform live for various community events. The conductor, Bevan Messenger, studied at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has played with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, State Orchestra of Victoria, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. Auditions will be held on June 19th at Corinda State High School from 4pm – 8pm. Local Children of Courage receive awards
Brisbane Oxley-Sherwood Lions Club held their second Children of Courage Award Ceremony recently. The motto for Children of Courage is Aiming for the Stars. Every child nominated receives an award - it is not a competition. It is hoped that by receiving the award it will: • act as an encouragement for their future • help them believe in themselves • help increase their self-worth Fourteen children were nominated from the Special Olympics and Corinda State High School, with each receiving a medal, certificate and the Brisbane Oxley-Sherwood Lions Club Badge. Graham Perret, Federal Member for Moreton and Tarnya Smith, State Member for Mt Ommaney presented the awards. Natasha McLeod, a recipient from Corinda State High School, made an excellent speech thanking everyone for making the day special. The Award Ceremony was followed by an afternoon tea, very capably organised by the Oxley Branch of CWA.
Sherwood Probus Club Update

Sherwood Probus members continue to enjoy many activities which keep us young at heart and mentally healthy. In early May we enjoyed a lovely day in the country west of Toowoomba. First we visited Jondaryan Woolshed on the Friday of their heritage weekend. The historical village has a lot of memories and articles from times past at the Jondaryan Homestead. Volunteers dressed in period costumes added to the atmosphere. Morning tea was served in the Damper Hut with that Australian favourite damper and golden syrup. Inside the woolshed was a market selling goods such as jewellery, woodwork, knitted garments and scarves. After the grand parade of sheep, working dogs, horses and farm machinery, we left for the Transport and Main Roads Heritage Centre opposite the Toowoomba airport entrance. After a short film, we were free to explore the exhibits. This history of road construction showed us how much methods have changed over the years. Our April speaker was WWII veteran Mack Jamieson who spoke on code breaking Japanese radio communications. He worked with General MacArthur in the Philippines which greatly assisted the Allied war effort. Instead of a speaker in May we had a ‘getting to know you’ morning. Lots of fun and laughter ensued. The Lyric Theatre entertained us with Hot Shoe Shuffle, the updated show from years ago. This was thoroughly enjoyed by the theatre group. Members are looking forward to a number of world renowned musicals in coming months. During June, book group members will be reading “Every Move You Make” by David Malouf. In coming months, members are looking forward to extended trips to Rockhampton/Yeppoon, Longreach/Winton and Carnarvon Gorge/Winton. These trips embody the Probus slogan of Fun, Fellowship and Friendship. In May the garden group met at a member’s home where participants brought along plants or cuttings and gave a short talk. There’s an excellent opportunity this Saturday to come face to face with some of Brisbane’s most colourful wildlife. Leading ecologist, Professor Hugh Possingham of the University of Queensland will introduce you to the wonderful world of birds at the Sherwood Arboretum, Jolimont Street at 7am, Saturday 8 June. You will be have to be “up with the birds” to catch this guided walk by the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA). However, by joining this walk, you will be rewarded with a wealth of knowledge from one of Brisbane’s most experienced birders. During morning tea at around 8.20am, there’s also the added opportunity to chat with Professor Posssingham about your experiences seeing the Arboretum’s thriving birdlife. “It’s really quite common to see 40 or 50 species of birds in an hour in the Sherwood Arboretum,” Professor Possingham said. “In fact, more than 160 species of birds have been sighted over the past decade in the Arboretum.” The wetland’s well-vegetated islands and a riverfront bushland corridor have made the Arboretum a firm favourite for bird watching. Whether it’s birds or bush that interest you, FOSA provides a great way to be involved in caring for this unique parkland, now celebrating its 88th year as Brisbane’s first arboretum dedicated solely to Australian native trees. Graceville Community Garden Update

If you’ve got a hankering for a new hobby, have you thought about keeping bees? These wonderful creatures have seen a resurgence in interest over the last few years. Concern about collapsing colonies, pesticides and parasites have made headlines around the world, for good reason. Urban and suburban bee keeping is on the rise. It’s not your run of the mill hobby that consumes time and money without giving much back. Hives can produce anywhere from 20 to 200kg of honey per year, more than enough for a household. The remaining honey makes a great gift or is a way to recover costs. The honey from your hive is not blended to fit someone’s idea of a honey flavour – it is unique and far more delicious than the store bought varieties. You may also get several kilograms of valuable beeswax from which you can make candles and other household products. The Graceville Community Garden has had its beehive since November 2011. The garden members are very proud to have a productive bee hive and these bees help pollinate our crops! Many aspiring amateur beekeepers have gained experience literally ‘within the hive’ at the All You Can Eat Gardens workshops that Tim conducts at the Graceville Community Garden. We are all looking forward to more jars of delicious honey this coming season. It would be good to talk about some of those old-fashioned plants that are found in many gardens but which are not always readily available. It would be worthwhile, however, asking your favourite nursery about some of them or begging gardeners who have established plants, for a cutting. One such old-fashioned plant is the climber Ipomoea horsfalliae, commonly known as the Red Cardinal creeper (pictured). It is just one of a huge range of the Ipomoea genus which includes mostly climbing, evergreen shrubs, perennials and annuals. Most species have a twining habit and masses of flowers and are some of our loveliest tropical flowering vines. As a rule they like a fertile, well-drained and sunny position in the garden. Ipomoea horsfalliae is an evergreen perennial and comes from the West Indies and other tropical areas. It grows up to 3m and, unlike some of the other species, requires a frost-free region. It does best in full sun but will flower in part-shade. It is a prolific flowerer from summer to winter with its stunning clusters of glossy, almost black buds appearing first. They then open into the very lovely bright, deep-pink or purple trumpet-like flowers which give it its common name. It is a creeper which is easy to control, not at all invasive, and is useful on fences, trellises and banks. The one in the picture is growing on an archway but they are also suitable for growing in containers (pots, etc. on a balcony or in a courtyard). They’re a bit tricky to grow from cuttings but it is possible (only in the month of November, however – weird, I agree). Try propogating cuttings in a mixture of half peat moss and half sand. Next month we’ll feature another one of those plants that grandma used to grow! New gardeners are always welcome at the Oxley Garden Club. Chelmer and District Probus Club Update by David Allen
The re-established Probus Club of Chelmer has a new name (Chelmer and District) to clarify that it draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley, as well as a brand new committee. The new club President is Rob Bruce, a retired human resources specialist. In accepting his appointment as President on 22 May, Rob thanked club members for their support and the Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary for its efforts in sponsoring the club and guiding its development in recent months. He said that the club looks forward to establishing an outings program and other activities of interest to members. He added that the club gives priority to a guest speaker program featuring quality guest speakers on a range of topics of interest to retirees. The club’s guest speaker on 22 May was Adele Rice, recently retired principal of Milpera State High School. Adele spoke of her experiences in founding and developing the school which has a well-deserved reputation as a unique and vibrant educational institution dedicated to the settlement and English language development of recently arrived migrants. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 26 June when the guest speaker will be Helen Coughlan on the topic Cambodia – beyond the killing fields. This talk will cover recent developments in education for girls and re-building the agricultural industry. A movie and coffee morning is also planned for Tuesday 4 June. Arthritis in colder months
Arthritis is one of the most common diseases affecting your dog that we see in the practice at this time of year. Arthritis is a chronic painful degenerative condition that develops gradually over years. It can affect more than one joint causing inflammation and pain for your dog. Arthritis can be controlled to minimise pain and increase mobility which adds to your pets quality of life. But do not leave it too long. The key is to seek an early diagnosis and treatment program so you and your dog are well prepared to cope with the colder winter months. This is when the signs of arthritis increase and the pain increases. Degenerative joint disease can be managed as a chronic disease as it is in human medicine, just remember it is control, not a cure. Sadly, in some cases, the crippling affects of arthritis are unavoidable due to injury, joint abnormalities, being overweight, getting older and general wear and tear which affects the larger and more active breeds and they develop ongoing problems. Your dog does experience pain with this condition, but the problem lies in your pet’s inability to communicate this pain, as they want to please you, and common signs can be missed. Remember, dogs over seven years are at higher risk of being affected and large breeds more than toy breeds, however, it is a disease that can affect all ages and breeds. You are in the best position to identify early clinical signs as you know your dog’s personality and will be able to recognise subtle changes to your dogs physical activity. Some signs to watch out for are: • reluctance to walk • limping • stiffness in the morning or after a sleep • licking or biting their joints • difficulty getting up • difficulty climbing stairs • change in personality from happy and playful to irritable and sad Talk to your vet about the symptoms and treatment. There are a large number of medications that are used these days to give relief and don’t forget there are supportive therapies such as condroitin blends, omega3 capsules, green lip muscles, shark cartilage and glucosamine supplements, some are in joint diets for dogs and supplements that can be used. Remember to only give your pet arthritis drugs prescribed for dogs NOT medication for humans. Dogs can react differently to many medications and serious side effects can occur. Get you dog checked out with a visit to your vet and start on treatment to make their winter cosy and more comfortable. Create a comfortable, soft warm environment especially during winter. Keep them away from draughts, get a bed off the ground with a lot of comfortable padding which is better than a blanket. Gentle lead exercise is good as is swimming. Remember an early diagnosis and treatment for this lifelong condition can mean a more comfortable and enjoyable life for your dog.
