April’s Photo: Whispers of Spring

A stream flows soft through field and sky, Reflecting gold as sun drifts by Its waters hum a whispered tune, Beneath the glow of late-day bloom

Tall grasses lean, both old and wise, Their whispers lost in evening sighs

Yet emerald blades rise bold and new,

A promise bathed in April’s dew

A steadfast tree stands tall, alone, Its branches bare, its blossoms sown In silent dreams of warmth to be, A waiting hush, a breath set free.

The sky burns bright in hues untold, A canvas brushed with blue and gold Winter lingers, yet fades away, As spring steps forth to stake its claim

“Where coffee is a big deal”

Standing tall at the east side of Salina, Oklahoma, Salina Trade Post is more than just a tack store—it’s a tribute to a family’s passion for horses, a love for the Southwest aesthetic, and a commitment to serving their community. Owner and operator Anita Thomer, along with her family, have created a space where both seasoned equestrians and newcomers to the horse world can find not only the supplies they need but also a welcoming atmosphere filled with warmth and tradition.

Originally from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Thomer family made the move to Northeast Oklahoma over a decade ago in search of a simpler, more self-sufficient way of life. “We were ahead of the trend,” Anita shares. “We left the suburbs, found some land, and started homesteading. We wanted more nature, more peace and quiet—and maybe a little adventure, too.” That adventure led them straight to Salina. “The first time we drove across Lake Hudson, I was totally enamored. It just felt like home. To this day, I still love that drive over the bridge and I think I always will.”

Their journey into homesteading started, as many do, with chickens. But soon, their farm grew, and before long, horses became an integral part of their lives.

“We were newcomers to the horse world and often wished we had a local place to get what we needed and someone to guide us,” Anita recalls. They found that mentor in Steve Dyer, a horse trainer in Jay, Oklahoma, who became a trusted friend and teacher. Tragically, in May 2023, Steve passed away in a horse accident during one of the Thomer family’s lessons. His loss was profound, leaving them unsure of how to move forward in the equestrian world. Ultimately, his legacy became their inspiration. “Steve wouldn’t have wanted us to give up,” Anita says. “So we found a way to keep sharing our passion.”

While the store specializes in horse tack and supplies, it offers much more. “You don’t have to own a horse to find something you love here,” Anita explains. “We’re all about the Southwest style—blankets, baskets, leather goods, and unique home décor.”

The shop also features consignment items from local artisans, including tooled wallets from Saline Creek Leather and handcrafted gifts from Diamond K Leathers in Broken Arrow. As they grow, the Thomers plan to introduce their own handmade and customized leather goods.

On December 4, 2024, Salina

Trade Post officially opened its doors.

TRADE POST

Beyond selling products, the Thomer family envisions Salina Trade Post as a community hub. “Our ideal customer is the new horse owner. We have everything they need to get started— not just equipment, but also the knowledge and the stories that make them feel comfortable and welcome.”

Customers are often surprised by the store’s eclectic mix. “People expect a tack shop but don’t anticipate finding beautiful home décor or unique gifts,” Anita laughs. “Some are even a little taken aback by the bison skull on the counter!”

The store also offers saddle cleaning and minor leather repairs. “We take pride in gentle, thorough hand-cleaning that doesn’t just make saddles look good but keeps them in great condition.” As demand grows, they plan to expand their leatherworking services and even host workshops on tack making, leatherworking, and horsemanship.

The future of Salina Trade Post is filled with possibilities. “We see this place becoming a mix of an old-time local hangout and a must-visit tourist destination,” Anita says. “We hope to outgrow our little building and expand into a bigger space.”

But no matter how much they grow, one thing will remain the same: their dedication to the community. “What we’re doing here is invaluable—not just for horse lovers but for the town as a whole. We want to be a place where people feel welcome, where stories are shared, and where we keep the spirit of horsemanship alive.”

With saddles, tack, blankets, and an ever-expanding selection of handcrafted goods, Salina Trade Post is already well on its way to becoming a cherished fixture in Northeast Oklahoma. Stop by, stay awhile, and experience the warmth, happiness, and casual charm that the Thomer family has built—one saddle, one story, and one friendship at a time.

Zen Wellness

Becky Melnik wasn’t always an Oklahoman. Originally born in Gary, Indiana, she spent most of her life in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she lived for 44 years It was there that she discovered her passion for massage therapy, graduating from massage school in 2003 and gaining experience at some of the city’s most wellknown spas After years of refining her skills and eventually opening her own business in 2014, Becky and her family made the decision to move to Pryor, Oklahoma, in 2022 to be closer to aging in-laws

Leaving the bustling energy of Las Vegas behind, Becky quickly fell in love with Oklahoma’s natural beauty and changing seasons "I love the green country aspect, the lakes, and the wildlife," she shares "When I first moved here, I saw a cardinal for the first time in person, not just in pictures That was magical "

Upon relocating, Becky rebranded her business from "Zentopia" to "Zen Wellness," embracing a new chapter while staying true to her philosophy of tranquility and healing. Zen Wellness is not just about massage; it’s about providing a holistic approach to self-care

"I don’t just do massage," Becky explains "I have a whole toolbox of techniques to help people find peace and balance From soul card readings to foot detox and Japanese foot acupressure, I want to lift people up. There’s enough stress in the world this is a place for healing "

At Zen Wellness, every massage is customized to the client’s unique needs Becky specializes in deep tissue massage, therapeutic massage, Swedish massage, and alternative healing techniques such as ear candling and Gua Sha

"I don’t nickel and dime my clients," she emphasizes. "If I feel like hot stones or cupping will benefit you, I incorporate them into the session without extra charges. It’s all about what your body needs in that moment "

Her signature Japanese foot acupressure technique has been particularly impactful, often unlocking emotional blockages that clients didn’t realize they were holding onto. "Every muscle has an emotion in it. When I work on the feet, memories and feelings can resurface, and it’s amazing to witness that release and transformation."

Zen Wellness

Bringing Balance and Healing to Locust Grove

On the outskirt of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, a sanctuary of peace and rejuvenation awaits. Zen Wellness, owned and operated by Becky Melnik, is more than just a massage studio it is a haven for those seeking relief, relaxation, and holistic healing. With over two decades of experience, Becky has dedicated her career to helping others achieve balance in both body and mind. Her journey to Oklahoma and the creation of Zen Wellness is a story of passion, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to wellness.

Walking through the doors of Zen Wellness, clients immediately feel a sense of calm Becky ensures that every session is centered around the individual "When you walk in, you are my number one priority. I listen not only to what you tell me but also to what your body is saying My ultimate goal is for you to leave feeling balanced, happy, and pain-free "

Clients can easily book appointments through Facebook, where Becky actively markets her services and shares monthly specials "I run package specials around the holidays and try to offer monthly deals," she says. "I make booking simple through my Set More page, where clients can see all available services and schedule with ease "

Becky believes that self-care should extend beyond the massage table "Massage is recommended every 4-6 weeks, but in between, I encourage my clients to stay hydrated, meditate, and be gentle with themselves If they ever have questions, I’m available 24/7 via text "

Despite being located on busy Highway 82, Becky finds that many people still don’t know about Zen Wellness "Getting people comfortable with trying massage is a challenge, but I always reassure them that they are in a safe and professional space "

Looking to the future, Becky is excited to once again be part of Locust Grove’s Founder’s Day, offering chair massages to introduce more people to the benefits of her work.

For Becky, Zen Wellness isn’t just a business it’s a calling "The most rewarding part of my job is simply being here every day This is the talent I was given, and I am grateful for it I want people to walk in feeling stressed and walk out feeling lighter, freer, and more at peace "

As for her personal philosophy, Becky finds inspiration in books like From Here to Serenity and the teachings of Wayne Dyer "I surround myself with positivity, and that’s what I want to share with my clients No matter how upset or overwhelmed you are when you walk through my door, I am the relief you are seeking "

With a heart full of compassion and hands that bring healing, Becky Melnik and Zen Wellness are making a profound impact on the well-being of Locust Grove

Whether it’s through massage, energy work, or simply listening with an open heart, Becky is dedicated to helping her clients find their own sense of Zen

Welcome to Vital Vibes with Dani G. Stone, APRN-CNP, also known as Nurse Practitioner. This month, we ’ re diving into an essential topic stress. Stress affects both mental and physical health, and understanding how to manage it can significantly improve overall well-being. Dani, a full-time primary care provider at a local clinic, recently launched The Sparkling Stone Med Spa and Wellness with her daughter. Their goal is to help people feel better from the inside out through beauty, wellness, IV vitamin infusions, B12 injections, and weight loss services.

Stress is the body's response to external pressures, leading to increased heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration It can impact sleep, appetite, and mood, often triggering anxiety or depression These physiological reactions are interconnected, making stress a critical factor in overall health

Chronic stress presents in various ways, including:

High blood pressure, sometimes fluctuating due to anxiety (e g , “white coat syndrome”)

Irregular heartbeat (Atrial Fibrillation or AFIB)

Increased respiration issues, especially for those with asthma

Sleep disturbances

Mood changes, including irritability and depression

While medications can help, natural stress-relief methods are just as vital:

Deep Breathing: Helps regulate the nervous system

Relaxation Techniques: Creating a calm environment and practicing mindfulness

Physical Activity: Yoga and walking are excellent stress-reducing exercises

Social Connection: Spending time with loved ones and engaging in hobbies

Unchecked stress can lead to serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke, and weakened immune function due to increased inflammation It also disrupts digestion, causing acid reflux, ulcers, and even metabolic issues like weight gain from stress eating

A balanced diet can significantly reduce stress: Best Foods: High-fiber foods like oatmeal, whole grains, and crunchy fruits and vegetables

Worst Foods: Processed and unhealthy options that contribute to inflammation

Vitamin Support: IV vitamin infusions and B12 injections provide stress relief, with Bcomplex vitamins and magnesium being particularly effective

Social disconnection can heighten stress, leading to anxiety and depression Dani emphasizes the importance of engaging in activities that bring joy, such as quilting, gardening, or family gatherings Even occasional social events, like a monthly dinner with loved ones, can make a difference.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that stressrelated conditions always require lifelong medication While some individuals may need prescriptions, many can manage stress effectively through lifestyle changes like proper nutrition, exercise, and good sleep hygiene

Entrepreneurs and professionals often struggle with burnout. The key is to prioritize self-care, establish work-life balance, and find a fulfilling hobby If stress becomes overwhelming, seeking professional support or counseling can provide valuable coping strategies

If stress feels unmanageable, it’s crucial to recognize when to seek help For those experiencing severe emotional distress, reaching out to a mental health professional or support hotline can be life saving Managing stress is not just about reducing its effects but fostering a lifestyle that enhances mental and physical resilience With the right tools, techniques, and support, you can take control of your well-being and thrive despite life’s challenges.

New Vibes, New Growth...

This month, I introduced a new staple article in Local Vibe Magazine Vital Vibes with Dani G. Stone, APRN-CNP. In this recurring feature, Dani will share her medical knowledge to help you better understand wellness topics without diagnosing. Our first article dives into the effects of stress on the mind and body, along with practical ways to destress. If there’s a topic you’d like Dani to explore in a future issue, send us an email at localvibemag@gmail.com.

Looking ahead to May, I’m excited to introduce another ongoing column: Cultivating Vibes. This section will focus on all things homesteading, gardening, and farming sometimes featuring recipes that bring homegrown goodness to the table. Whether you're a seasoned grower or just starting your first backyard garden, this column will have something for you. Have a topic you'd love to see covered? Let us know at localvibemag@gmail.com.

As always, thank you for being part of the Local Vibe community. Your engagement and support make this magazine a true reflection of the heart and soul of Northeast Oklahoma.
