PIPE SPRINGS

Resting on the eastern edge of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, just off highway 412, Pipe Springs Park has been a cornerstone of the community for generations. Rich with history, the park predates even the Civil War’s Battle of Locust Grove, which unfolded on this very site. Its natural charm is anchored by a hillside pipe that pours out crystal-clear spring water, a feature cherished by locals for decades. Residents would often bring their containers to collect the fresh water, a simple yet meaningful tradition that has stood the test of time. But now, thanks to a transformative effort funded by a TSET (Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust) grant and the Cherokee Nation, Pipe Springs Park has been reimagined to better serve the community. Once a modest space with little more than a circle drive and room for picnics, the park has undergone a stunning renovation, making it a hub for family fun, relaxation, and outdoor activity.

destination in Locust Grove. A safe, fenced-in play area filled with swings, slides, and other fun equipment keeps children entertained for hours, while parents can relax on nearby benches or stroll along the paved cement paths.

For those seeking a bit of friendly competition, permanent corn hole boards and a disc golf course offer endless opportunities for fun. Why not host a corn hole tournament or a disc golf challenge with friends? Bring your gear and make it a day of games and laughter!

The park also features a large gazebo, perfect for community events, birthday parties, or just a shaded spot to enjoy the outdoors. Covered picnic tables equipped with grills invite families to gather for cookouts, and a fenced-in dog park ensures that even your furry friends feel at home. Thoughtful touches, like waste receptacles and a water hydrant in the dog park, add to the convenience.

A Journey of Heart and Style: Inside

The Gypsy Fig

In the heart of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, a unique boutique called The Gypsy Fig has become a cherished part of the community. Owned and operated by Tara Cook, this upscale resale and consignment shop offers more than just fashion—it provides a welcoming space filled with warmth, creativity, and an incredible story of faith, family, and resilience.

The Beginnings: A God-Give Opportunity

For Tara, opening The Gypsy Fig wasn’t premeditated plan; it was a divine momen alignment. A conversation with a friend was moving out of town opened the taking over the shop’s space, and within Tara found herself stepping into the wor entrepreneurship. “It was such a smooth in your lap,” she recalls. “It was definitely thing.” Tara’s decision was also rooted love for Locust Grove’s small-town charm her desire to contribute to its growth. being a part of a small community,” she wanted to give my kids and my town more.”

What’s in a Name? The Story Be The Gypsy Fig

The boutique’s name, The Gypsy Fig, is deeply personal. Inspired by her father, who propagated fig trees across the family’s properties, Tara wanted to honor his memory and her Portuguese heritage. “He propagated the same fig tree seven times,” she explains. Initially considering names like “The Traveling Fig,” she eventually combined her bohemian spirit with the fig tree’s legacy, creating a name that perfectly reflects the shop’s vibe of sustainability, resourcefulness, and heartfelt meaning.

Curating Style with Purpose

At The Gypsy Fig, Tara hand-selects items with an eye for quality and uniqueness. While the boutique started with a wider range of consignment pieces, it quickly grew into a destination for higher-end items, featuring brands like Louis Vuitton and Kate Spade. “We’ve definitely worked our way much faster than I expected to upscale consignment,” Tara shares.

But it’s not just about high-end fashion. Tara’s focus is on providing what the community needs, whether it’s thrifted pieces, formal wear, or unique items like handmade jewelry from local artists. “I like to have what people are looking for. It makes them want to come back,” she says.

A Boutique with Heart

For Tara, The Gypsy Fig is more than a business; it’s a place of connection and support. From praying with customers during difficult moments to creating a peaceful shopping environment, Tara’s mission is to make every visitor feel welcome and cared for. “I want people to come in and have a peaceful shopping experience,” she says. “I don’t want it to be stressful. I want them to feel like they had an outing and enjoyed it.”

Challenges and Triumphs of SmallTown Business

Running a boutique in a small town comes with its own set of challenges. Tara works tirelessly to manage all aspects of the business, from tagging items at home to balancing consigner relationships. “It’s not glamorous, but it works for me, and I love it,” she says. Despite the hard work, the rewards are clear: building relationships with customers, supporting her daughter’s college dreams, and being an integral part of the Locust Grove community.

Looking Ahead: Growing the Fig

As The Gypsy Fig continues to thrive, Tara has big plans for the future. She’s working on launching an online store to reach more customers and envisions moving into a larger space to expand her offerings. “I eventually want to have a bigger building with more options,” she says. In the meantime, she’s focused on maintaining the boutique’s “chill, fun, and personable” vibe. “I want everyone to feel welcome. I want them to walk in and feel like they made a new friend,” Tara says.

More Than a Store

Whether you’re looking for a designer handbag, a piece of vintage jewelry, or simply a friendly conversation, The Gypsy Fig offers it all. Tara’s story, passion, and dedication make this boutique a true gem in Locust Grove. As Tara puts it, “It’s shocking how many people don’t

“Your next customer could be looking at this space.... jus’ sayin’”

A Fresh Start: Your Path to a Better You

Starting fresh doesn’t require erasing who you are or where you’ve been Instead, it’s about learning from the negatives of past years, leaving them behind, and moving forward one step at a time. Reflect on your challenges and mistakes, not as burdens to carry but as lessons to grow from Each step, no matter how small, can lead to meaningful change

Simple Steps for a Healthier You

Start small Breathe Move your body Drink more water These simple acts can lay the foundation for a healthier, happier you. You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight Instead, focus on progress, not perfection

Don’t deny yourself guilty pleasures: Strive for healthy pleasures instead Love chocolate? Choose dark chocolate. Craving something salty? Swap fried chips for roasted nuts or kale chips

Reassess your drinking habits: Drink less alcohol (or stop altogether) And for the coffee lovers, maybe it’s time to switch to decaf or not The choice is yours

Nourish your body: Eat less fried food and pile your plate with healthy greens, fresh veggies, and grilled proteins

As the calendar flips to a new year, the phrase “New Year, New You” often dominates conversations, inspiring grand plans for self-improvement. But let’s take a step back. A new year doesn’t always mean starting over; it could also mean starting fresh.

Prioritize Quality Time

Life isn’t just about fitness goals or food choices True self-improvement includes nurturing relationships Spend more time with your family and friends. Not just time good, quality time. Put away the screens, be present, and create memories that matter

“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count It’s the life in your years ”
— Abraham Lincoln

Find Balance

Self-improvement doesn’t have to mean doing more of everything Sometimes, it’s about doing less. Travel more or less, depending on what you need Maybe it’s time to scale back commitments and focus on what truly brings you joy and peace

“Happiness is not something ready-made It comes from your own actions ”
Dalai Lama

You Don’t Have to Wait

Here’s the most important part: You don’t have to wait until January 1st to better yourself You can better yourself any and every day of the year. Just start Move forward Take it one day, one choice, one step at a time The journey to a “new you” doesn’t come with a deadline it’s a lifelong process of growth, learning, and loving yourself enough to keep going —

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. ”
Dalai Lama

Use What You Already Have

Whether you join a gym or simply use the one you’ve already committed to, the key is to start Lace up your sneakers and take that first step Not ready for the gym? Start with a walk, yoga in your living room, or a dance party in your kitchen.
