often get asked – “how do you get a job as an editor?” – to which my response is not as specific as I would really like – basically I had a passion for writing so, hey presto, I ran with it. At times I flittered between knowing and not knowing what I really wanted to do, but in the end I found my way and I’m now involved in a dynamic industry where every day is different. That being said I’m still waiting for a Liverpool FC scout to snap me up, though I think this dream may now have finally slipped through my grasp. Anyway, moving swiftly away from me, myself and I – I can now get round to what I’m trying to say. Daniella Draper has managed to establish herself as one of the regions’ most creative business owners, and has always had her ambitions firmly in place. Knowing exactly what you want to do from an early age may not be so common in many instances however; in the case of Miss Draper, jewellery was always something that sang to her soul. Eager to discover more about our April Cover Star I took a trip to the Daniella Draper workshop, where I met the majority of the Draper team (family dog included) to talk about the business, Daniella’s inspiration and her impressive clientele. This then got me thinking – what would I do if I had my time again? To be quite honest, being the indecisive soul that I am, I would likely be twiddling my thumbs just as much as I did the last time around. So, I’ll let the story speak for itself and leave the ‘what ifs’ for another time. 6

TIPS FOR BUYERS

To celebrate its new Aspect development in Anlaby, David Wilson Homes shares its top tips with Loco Magazine readers on how to make the most of Help to Buy’s 5% deposit scheme and buying your dream home.

1. Know your budget The first thing to consider for buyers has to be affordability. There are a number of online resources designed to help determine your borrowing capabilities. Ask our sales advisors for help on affordability and buying schemes.

2. All the little costs You’ve got your deposit sorted and the monthly repayments seem manageable, but there are a few costs that many buyers can easily overlook. Stamp duty for example. It might not seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things, but these costs need to be accounted for early on. 3. Determining your deposit There’s a lot of variation in the amount you’ll need for a deposit - the government’s Help to Buy scheme allows people to get on to the property ladder with a deposit as low as 5% of the value. Shop around for mortgage deals and don’t be afraid to ask for some advice.

variable mortgages will rise or fall with the lender's own Standard Variable Rate (SVR) whereas a fixed-rate mortgage will ensure the same monthly repayments over a certain time frame. 8. Viewing a property So you’ve got your budget, you’ve met with the bank to discuss a mortgage and you think you’ve found that perfect new home. It’s now important to thoroughly research the property for structural damage, damp and other faults. The process of buying a first home is a complex and, at times, stressful ordeal, but David Wilson Homes ensures excellence and incredible quality for your money. In short, work with the tools available to you; don’t be afraid to strike up conversation.

4. Affordability Banks now carry out an affordability assessment that takes both wages and expenses such as children, redundancy or career breaks into account. Make sure the property you are buying suits your needs for now – the beauty of a David Wilson home is that it offers a flexible living space that has been designed to house families with a range of needs. 7. What kind of mortgage? There are hundreds of different mortgages on the market, but they can all be split into two groups - fixed-rate and variable. The key difference is that

WHY I HOPE TOP GEAR IS STILL THE UNDISPUTED KING OF MOTORING SHOWS, AND OTHER MOTORING STORIES...

WOODFORD

S

ince the last time we spoke, the Geneva Motorshow saw some of the most exciting car launches for years, Formula One hit the headlines with a revised – and controversial – format for qualifying, and I filmed an ‘Ashes to Ashes’ Audi Quattro. There is, though a much bigger motoring story monopolising TV, online and print media at the moment – Top Gear. If you’re the sort of person who believes what they read, I will forgive you for assuming the ‘Chris Evans will ruin Top Gear’ stance. However, I’d like to put the record straight. Or at the very least - in the interest of balance - give you a different view point to mull over. Top Gear can’t fail, it just can’t. The franchise is the BBC’s most successful global brand, with commercial benefits for the corporation that go beyond simply the weekly viewership figures for a TV show about cars. They have some of the world’s best researchers and producers working behind the scenes to ensure the new series makes an impact when it returns to our screens. I spent some time with Chris Evans when I interviewed him for a TV feature recently, and genuinely he was a down-to-earth, approachable and very humble human being. And he loved people – he relished sharing the experience of his cars with the public. Furthermore, if he tired of the photos, selfies, repetitive questions and excitable boy racers - it didn’t show.

8

My car filming exploits have also led me to meet Chris Harris a few years ago, and we stayed in touch. Perhaps one day I’ll share with you the brilliant text he sent me when the news of his appointment broke, but for now I’ll tell you that he is a huge petrolhead, and very respected in motoring circles. You’ll be pleased to know that’s where my name dropping ends, but genuinely the show is in very safe hands, and I predict the world’s hat population will be considerably reduced when those doubting Top Gear’s future success start eating them. Clarkson’s brand of Top Gear never suffered at the hands of controversy and split opinions. In fact, quite the opposite. Yet since that all-too-well documented ‘incident’ in a North Yorkshire B&B, we haven’t seen or heard anything of real note from the three musketeers. This time, it’s Chris Evans and the ‘gang’ who look set to benefit from the negative focus of the world’s media. With every controversial story and edgy opinion, comes a heightened sense of curiosity – morbid or not – in readiness for the return of Top Gear in May. It’s no secret that I auditioned for Top Gear, and I had a lot of local support too, for which I was – and still am – very grateful. I truly hope new Top Gear is the success I think it will be, because if it isn’t, I will have to find a new dream. Actually, I wonder if there will be an open audition process for Bernie Ecclestone’s replacement? That Formula One qualifying format needs another look…

Say it with flowers

Broken Blossom “For those happy days or those sad occasions, we will do our very best to ensure that you get the flowers that say what you want them to”

B

roken Blossom in Beverley are on call, ready to arrange whatever needs arranging. Whether you’re someone who runs to a florist at any given moment, or perhaps a person who prefers a slightly less flamboyant gesture to mark a celebration – fear not, you’re in good hands. David and Mark Gillyon-Powell have a wealth of expertise, combined with a healthy passion for all things floral. Broken Blossom caters for weddings, gifts and all kinds of celebrations, as well as funerals and the slightly more formal occasions that likewise deserve that extra special effort. As well as a wealth of experience, Broken Blossom is the only florist in Beverley to house a refrigerated display; giving the flowers and arrangements that extra freshness to make your purchase last longer. If you’re looking for something other than your ‘run of the mill’ bouquet, David and Mark say they’re the go to guys – and I believe them. David’s love for flowers has blossomed from an early age, most recently resulting in a Floral Design foundation degree. Likewise, Mark has experienced considerable success as a competition floral arranger – which obviously makes them the perfect pair for the job. “At Broken Blossom we believe that your flowers should be as individual as you are. Whatever the occasion, we will strive to provide designs that are truly unique, stylish and bespoke”. STYLING Check out the video step by step, which also shows you another way to wear this style at locomagazine.co.uk

R o p e

B r a i d s

Style Tips We saw this trend at the New York and London Fashion Week, we like it because it’s powerful and simple to create. Not only does it fit well with all clothing and outfits, it’s very on trend at the moment and simply all over the catwalks right now 1 . H I G H P O N Y TA I L

Pull hair into a ponytail and secure tightly with a bobble. Stylist Top tip: *Take a small section of hair from under the pony to wrap hair around the base hiding the elastic and secure with pins.*

4.KEEP TWISTING

Twist your braid, crossing the sections over one another until you reach the end of your hair. If you find that your hair is unravelling as you are braiding it, just twist it tight again before you continue your braid.

2.SPLIT & TWIST

3.START BRAIDING

Divide the ponytail into two even sections. Begin to tightly twist both sections clockwise.

Take the two twisted sections and cross the pieces over each another in an anticlockwise motion. The twisted strands should switch hands.

5. FINISH THE BRAID

6. ADD THE SHINE

Once you’ve reached the end put a bobble in it.

Add some shine spray to give the braid a polished finish.

NATIONAL EGGS BENEDICT DAY

N

owadays every day is ‘National *something* Day’. Yesterday it was probably ‘National wear a sweater to work Day’ or perhaps ‘National pretzel Day’ – don’t quote me on these – but basically, who knows? In typical LOCO fashion, we’ve trawled through the lot and landed on a few that we think are worth celebrating…Unfortunately we haven’t picked them all (there really are too many) but after reluctantly casting ‘National pigs in blankets Day’ on April 24th and ‘National cheddar fries Day’ on April 20th aside, we’ve come to our decision.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup grated potato • ½ cup julienned onion • ½ cup julienned red pepper • 1 egg • 3 tablespoons flour • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 4 eggs • 1 teaspoon white vinegar • 1 egg yolk • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 4 tablespoons butter

INSTRUCTIONS

1 - Prep the ingredients: Preheat the oven to 200 degrees to keep the potato pancakes warm while you make the Eggs Benedict. Wash and dry the produce. Grate the potato, onion and red pepper. 2 - Make the Hash Browns: In a bowl, mix the potato, onion and red pepper with egg and flour. In a pan, heat 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Shape the hash browns into circles. Fry on each side for 4 minutes until golden brown. Place in the oven to keep warm while you make the Eggs Benedict. 3 - Make the Hollandaise Sauce: Melt the 4 tablespoons of butter in the microwave for 1 minute; make sure it has completely melted. In a blender, blend one egg yolk and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice for 10 seconds. Turn the blender on high and pour the butter into the sauce. 4 - Poach the Eggs: Fill a pan with water and heat until the water is simmering. Add the white vinegar to the water. Crack your egg in a bowl. Using a slotted spoon, swirl the water in a circle. Once the water pace has slowed a little, pour the egg into the centre of the swirling circle. Cook the egg for 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the egg with the slotted spoon and place on a paper towel to drain. On a plate, layer the hash brown, poached egg and top with hollandaise sauce.

PEOPLE

Mr Allcock H

THE MAN BEHIND 1884 HAS SOMETHING UP HIS SLEEVE…

ull’s culinary mastermind is well and truly back, though this time he aims to deliver a more relaxed version of his previous ‘finedining’ ideology than before. Despite the sustained popularity of 1884, James fled the nest in 2015 and has been working with his friend Gary Usher over at Burnt Truffle on the Wirral. Still, this was always going to be a means to an end: “When I resigned from 1884 I knew what I wanted to do, I just didn’t know when I wanted to do it. I thought to myself that it couldn’t hurt to take some time out and get back to the stove to help someone else out so I had a great time with Gary at Burnt Truffle but after sixmonths I was itching to have something more.” Not to bang the whole ‘city of culture’ drum again but as the Marina and the Fruit Market’s development continues business opportunities are unsurprisingly set to arise. James is keen to again play on the whole British heritage theme, but this time with a maritime twist. “I’ve got a really exciting meeting about a unit on the Marina, which I’ve actually viewed twice now so fingers crossed. “It would be everything from fish and chips to lobster, grilled lemon sole, just something really accessible but with my standards set throughout – that really good restaurant feel, somewhere that you could go to on a Wednesday night or dress up for on a Saturday night. “Another arm of the business is an old-fashioned 1950’s styled ice cream parlour, so the British seaside traditions type of thing. It won’t go out of fashion because it’s proper British heritage, it doesn’t have a shelf life and mainly it’s what I’d want to eat. “I’ve been sat on the concept for years to be honest, and it’s completely different to anything that I’ve done before or been known for. I’ve always been known for – I mean I hate the words but ‘fine dining’ I just think it’s rubbish but I’ve been known for higher end food, it’s where I’ve always worked.”

32

I’VE BEEN SAT ON THE CONCEPT FOR YEARS TO BE HONEST, AND IT’S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO ANYTHING THAT I’VE DONE BEFORE OR BEEN KNOWN FOR

James aims to set up this exciting venture with the help of crowd funding – something that helped set up Burnt Truffle and their primary site, Sticky Walnut. The concept behind the method of fundraising is simple – you pledge an amount of funds to the business and this is then returned once the restaurant is up and running – pretty much like paying for a gig or a ticket online. “Gary had set up his restaurant’s through crowd funding, so he’d raised £100,000 through kick-starter and through social media alone and then set Burnt Truffle restaurant up. “I think it’s a great idea, I mean some people don’t really get it. It’s not charity, you’ll pledge an amount to the restaurant and then get it back in a voucher when we’re open. It’s that simple.” Well, as simple as this may be, there is still plenty of work for James and his team to do. Nevertheless, I have all my fingers firmly crossed in the hope that this hard work brings something new and exciting to Hull’s foodscene – and I have every faith in James to deliver, once again.

DANIELLA DRAPER

LOCO Editor, Tom Horner dives headfirst into the world of bespoke jewellery to meet Daniella Draper – finding out about what it takes to start a creative business, how British fashion icon Kate Moss fell in love with her work and the opening of her Beverley store.

“A ship is safe in harbour, but that’s not what ships are for”

D

aniella Draper Jewellery is held in high regard amongst some of the world’s A-List celebrities and for very good reason. Still, this self professed ‘country girl’ has her feet firmly on the ground and her head in her workshop. Now, Cleethorpes is hardly regarded as the thriving metropolis of the North, however Miss Draper is a perfect example of how you can make it big anywhere: “I studied Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martin’s University and I was a bit torn between staying in London, getting a job and working with my own jewellery as a side-line project, or to move back home and see how it would go if I went on my own. “I moved back home

36

in the summer after graduation in 2009 and sold my jewellery to friends, friends of friends and family, that kind of jazz. It was the money from this that enabled me to make another collection and it went from there to start with.” Since establishing her brand locally, with stores in Cleethorpes, Lincoln and most recently Beverley, Daniella has seen her collection feature alongside some of the world’s heavyweight celebs. Alice Temperley, Ian McKell and Kate Moss casually fall into conversation when reeling off a number of notable names, as well as Ed Sheeran – whose manikin in Madame Tussauds also has one of Daniella’s signature bangles wrapped firmly around its wrist. This is quite obviously more of a blessing than a curse – that really does go

without saying – however Daniella is keen to maintain the intimacy between the jewellery and its’ bearer. “If it is a celebrity we want them to love the jewellery, rather than wear it just because their stylist has told them to wear it. That was the nice thing about the Kate Moss story, she wore the bangles for a shoot but she then kept them because she loved them.” Daniella explains. On arrival, being brutally honest, I had no idea of what to expect when setting foot in Daniella’s workshop – having never had the chance to set foot in such a place before. I was greeted by Daniella’s sister Holly Draper, as well as the family dog (though I did not have chance to catch the little fella’s name). Everything about the business is done with a little touch from a member of Daniella’s

“I’ve got one that says ‘Fortune Favours The Brave’ which is a motto that I refer to when I’m feeling a little bit out my depth” family, whether it’s from her own designs to the growth of the brand, which again only adds to the story behind each individual piece. “My mum is my business partner, she has 25-years experience in retail because she used to own a clothes shop in Grimsby. I’ve even had my dad help out in the workshop and granny comes and cleans. We’ve got 25 staff and it’s just so important to make it feel like a family run business, so everyone feels that they’re appreciated.” Both Daniella and Holly are walking billboards for the collection; covered in bespoke rings from the Cinderella range as well as the signature bangles. The bangles are a best seller, which really comes as no surprise; with the ability to personalise each band with a signature etched on the inside and out. I was obviously keen to learn what

38

Daniella had imprinted on her bangles. So, being the nosey so and so that I am, I found out: “I’ve got one that says ‘Fortune Favours The Brave’ which is a motto that I refer to when I’m feeling a little bit out my depth. I then have ‘A Ship Is Safe In Harbour, But That’s Not What Ships Are For’ that’s just to remind me that I need to push myself outside of my comfort zone and travel more, because I do find that I’ll just keep myself in my workshop.” With Daniella’s love for jewellery design fuelling her business, growth is inevitable. Daniella now has three stores across the region, which all offer something a little different to cater for the clientele in the area. “We have a shop on Seaview Street in Cleethorpes, we then decided to go for Lincoln and now one in Beverley. I think they all feel right with our

brand. It’s really exciting to grow the brand and we’ve always liked Beverley, so it just felt like a no-brainer.” With three stores, a successful website and a jewellery collection to rival even the most established brand, things are looking rosy for Daniella Draper. Those who buy from Daniella Draper Jewellery also buy into their brand’s ethos, centring on inspiration and ambition. This, paired with the fact that each piece made by Daniella is as beautifully personal as the last, gives the customer a sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves – a kind of club I guess? And it’s this that really makes Miss Draper’s business, extra special. www.danielladraper.com Facebook - danielladraper Twitter - @danielladraper

First of all Tom, what’s your story – how did you become a playwright?

“It was a bit of a happy accident, in that I finished my degree which wasn’t in theatre and moved back home. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, other than that I wanted to be a writer. The West Yorkshire Playhouse ran a writing course called ‘So You Want To Be A Writer?’ which lasted five weeks. It was slightly unexpected because I’d studied English at Oxford University and we didn’t have that much to do with theatre, or contemporary stuff. I ended up writing a full-length play and that got me a year with a company called Paines Plough, who I’m still working with now. I got to see loads of different plays and meet loads of different theatre writers and I think you just learn by doing it. You can see the clangers that you’ve made and just learn from them and then that led to other jobs when I was in London.”

Now, tell me – where did the inspiration for Folk come from? “Well a few things really, when I was a teenager I used to be in a Folk band with my dad and some of his mates from church in Withernsea. In folk music it doesn’t matter how good you are really, it’s more about just doing it and if you make mistakes it doesn’t matter. Then I guess I was thinking about being part of something, I think the characters in Folk are people who have slipped through the net a little, and so this little band that they form is to belong to something. I don’t really think it matters much what that something is, as long as you have something that’s bigger than you. I mean now I’ve said it now, it doesn’t sound very exciting. But I just guess it’s about the characters and I think that’s very important to write truthful characters. I also knew that I wanted to get music in with the play, because something special happens with music on stage. Someone once said to me – that when people have too many feelings to talk about, they start to sing and when they have too many feelings to sing about, they start to dance – and I do think there is something very true in that.”

life and the world that she understood. Then ‘Jumpers for Goalposts’ I wanted to write a rom-com I suppose. I think with film rom-coms at least there is this almost glossy finish to them, there’s always in kind of a well to-do part of London or New York. So I guess I just wanted to write a gay one and I wanted to set it in Hull, somewhere a bit more truthful to the kind of environments that I knew and recognised.”

TOM WELLS

What does the future hold for Tom Wells?

“I just really like writing plays so I hope I can carry on doing that, I feel that’s plenty to be honest. I’m really excited about 2017; it will be lovely to see what happens in Hull. I think what will be really interesting will be the legacy that 2017 brings and how exciting work keeps being made here. It will be amazing to see what everyone has got up their sleeves.”

What three things make you the writer that you are today? (In no particular order) 1 – My year with Paines Plough. 2 – ‘The Reluctant Escapologist’ (Mike Badwell) 3 – ‘Joan’s Book: Joan Littlewood’s Peculiar Story as She Tells It’ (Joane Littlewood)

Finally, what are your top 3 favourite plays? (Again, in no particular order) 1 – ‘A Taste of Honey’ (Shelagh Delaney) 2 – ‘Operation Greenfield’ (Littlebulb) 3 – ‘You Can See The Hills’ (Matthew Dunster)

You can buy tickets to Tom’s new show ‘FOLK’ by visiting www.hulltruck.co.uk or calling 01482 323638.

Above: Folk in Rehearsal Below: Tom Wells

So what was the inspiration behind your previous plays?

“I mean I love kitchen sink dramas and when I first started writing, I was reading about a lot of plays. Honestly I didn’t know much about the different types of plays so I just read up on different genres, but the one that really sang out to me and it’s still my favourite play is ‘A Taste Of Honey’ by Shelagh Delaney. I just think its just massively soulful but really she was writing about her

Run for the Hills WE TALK WITH CHRIS HUTCHINSON OF MURRAY HILLS SOLICITORS ABOUT LOOKING FORWARD AND PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

T

he future. Something that tends to scare the hell out of some, myself included – especially when I think about what I could be doing in say 25-years time... It could be said that there is an element of excitement that surrounds the future, but if you’re like me (a bit of a worrier) then you’d rather put this sort of thing to the back of your mind. Unfortunately, this isn’t going to do you any good whatsoever and according to Murray Hills Solicitors, you really SHOULD be looking ahead.

A WORD: CHRIS HUTCHINSON, DIRECTOR AT MURRAY HILLS: “One of the things that I’ve found is that often the people with most difficulties are not people who are married, it’s the people who are not married but do in fact live together. “There is a myth that once you live together for more than a certain period of time, then you get rights under English law and that is not the case.” “The Perfect Example”: “I had a previous client some years ago, she was living with her partner and had been for 20-years; all the assets that they both possessed were in the gentlemen’s name. My client’s partner had previously said that he was going to make a will, this, however, didn’t happen and he unfortunately died unexpectedly. Under the law, although she didn’t have any automatic rights, she could have made a claim against his estate and there is no doubt that she would have been awarded a substantial amount of this as a dependant, but she would have to make this application because there was no will. The law states that without a will, the estate would pass down the bloodline in a specific way. Anyway, an estranged blood relative of the deceased partner came out of the woodwork and under the rules was entitled to claim the estate, and that is precisely what the relative did. I use the word estranged, because the relative had previously stolen from him in years gone by. As I’ve been a family lawyer, I usually try to find a way out of our client going to court because most people find it extremely stressful and

48

expensive. In this particular case, however, I did everything that I could to persuade this lady to make an application to go to court, because as I say she would’ve been awarded a substantial amount of her partner’s estate, but she turned around and said that she wouldn’t claim against her partner’s relative and she walked away. Now, as far as I know, she may well be living on benefits as opposed to being a millionaire.” This is an extreme example, granted, but this is the sort of thing that really can happen to the best of us. The moral of the story here ladies and gentlemen is simple. Seek advice from those who are in the know. Although it may not be atop your list of weekly priorities, it is a fact of life that anything can happen. It’s a given that you would want to cover yourself, your family – anyone that you hold dear as a matter of fact – so pop in for a chat with Murray Hills in either Beverley, Hull or their Bridlington office to gain some sound, reliable advice.
