The City of Culture bid is now in full effect with plots like C4Di pushing Hull’s creative and innovative business further forward, and this is exactly why we take a look at exciting structures like this. Anyway, more than anything we believe that February’s issue of LOCO can provide our community with positive material; something that you can’t gain from a Facebook status, or a Twitter hash-tag. However, I won’t take you through the issue step by step, but I will say one last thing. Kudos for staying strong through January – we hope you find the stories in this February issue of LOCO as interesting and inspiring as we do.

LILAKAI

I

In last month’s issue of LOCO we promised to uphold a progressive mentality and declared our New Year’s resolution – to help promote positivity, ambition and innovation in our local area. Well, good news, we’re still plugging away and we swear that our will power will last longer than our dry January attempt did. We’ve battled past the cold winter blues and got ourselves back in check following another swift Christmas and New Year break, which is why we believe that February is a month to get things done for many of us. Though, not to fully disregard our January intentions just yet and forget New Year’s resolutions – as much as we would like to forget some – we realise that we set these things for a reason. So, if you are keeping up a healthy lifestyle, or perhaps you want to pick up where you left off in mid-January (don’t worry we’ve all done it) then we have the perfect remedy for you. For one, we take a look at East Riding Leisure’s revamp, with a surge of investments helping to reinvigorate council gyms forever. Furthermore, as spring approaches and the dark nights dwindle we want to mirror this seasonal shift, by looking to stories like Elizabeth Holland’s – a role model for all young women, and a young lady from our City of Culture. Overall 2016 may (in the end) be a year overshadowed by its neighbour 2017; however this is not to say that we can’t achieve just as much during these next 11 months.

ELIZABETH HOLLAND

Sticks & Stones The world of modelling has forever been viewed as a fickle industry full of highs, lows & an abundance of drama. We talk with Hull model Elizabeth Holland about her experience in the world of high demand fashion.

I

By TOM HORNER Photography by CATHERINE LAURA

t almost seems to be a subliminal choice at an early age that dictates as to what we call a hobby, or a passion. Many go in for sports, some go in for music or perhaps both, a select few go in for arts and so on – you get the drift. However, one thing that is not so common is the crushing feeling of disappointment that only occurs when you are told to be inadequate, or in other words not good enough. Unfortunately, for 21-year old Elizabeth Holland this feeling is only too familiar, after not one but two different modelling agencies hindered what still may prove to be a bloody successful modelling career. You may or may not know, but Elizabeth (or Lizzie) has recently featured on local, national and even international news platforms. And, for the benefit of those who are unaware of this, I will divulge – those in the know will have to reacquaint with old news. Despite standing at 5ft 8” and with a figure that many could only wish for, Elizabeth strangely found herself on the receiving end of a somewhat distasteful situation. With aspirations of becoming a high-end fashion model looming, Miss Holland was told by her scouting agency to ‘shrink all over’. “It was always, you need to lose a little bit more, just a little. They said this in a way that wouldn’t sound too harsh, you know ‘you’ll meet all these celebrities and travel the world’ that sort of thing,” explains Lizzie. This may not seem like such an alien request – especially in the world of fashion and image – though already a size 8, the only method to execute such a demand would be to boarder on starvation. So, to cut a long story short (but not to retract any sentiment) Lizzie was subject to neglect, misguidance and all sorts of negativity from the agencies that had promised a dream career break. Sadly, this young girl from Hull is undoubtedly one of many to have received such “advice” from many a modelling agency across the world. “They’d say ‘oh we’ve got this job in Japan for you – it’s a minimum of £15k but you just need to lose a little bit more weight’ and that kept motivating me to lose more,” Lizzie added. However, what Miss Holland has done since this ordeal is nothing short of admirable, and this is where the story really begins; in

terms of a positive twist at least. By taking to social media Lizzie has since uncovered an extremely serious issue amongst all types of people. Now to clarify, this wasn’t your average Facebook status. This was Lizzie telling the world her true feelings and experiences, with the help of two photos. Rather than attaching a couple of photos that displayed the industry in all its glory, Lizzie instead attached photos of herself (in nothing but her underwear) showing just how ridiculous it would be to think she could shift anymore ‘weight’. After her post on Facebook reached close to 1000 shares, pictures and all, Lizzie’s story has literally gone viral. She has since been inundated with messages from all over the world, as girls who have shared in Lizzie’s struggle confide in and thank this young lady from Hull. “Social media helped me a lot, I mean I only posted something because I saw another girl do something similar before me. “I would never tell anyone to avoid modelling, because some people who work in the industry can be really good. “I would just say to anyone out there, that you shouldn’t have to change for anyone. If they like you, they should accept you for who you are,” Lizzie clarifies. Image and self-confidence are two things that currently seem to have fragmented, with the help of airbrushing, social media and a select deluded few at these national agencies. Unfortunately, it kinds of goes without saying that it will undoubtedly take more than Lizzie to stop such treatment of young girls, and boys for that matter, in this highly competitive industry. Nevertheless, Lizzie admits that she now finds herself in a very good place, working locally with a vintage clothing boutique and doing what she enjoys doing: “I’m currently doing an apprenticeship with PoorBoy Boutique behind the scenes, so like web design and doing social media and other things like that. “I’m going out with my friends whenever I want, eating whenever I want and just doing the normal things that before I wouldn’t have been able to do. I’m focusing on myself now.” This goes to show that the old ‘sticks and stones’ rhyme whilst harrowingly apparent in this instance, has been well and truly flattened by Lizzie.

“Whilst I build my self-confidence I’m just going to take a break from modelling. I do want to get back into it locally again though just not yet”

Having shown such resilience and to have over come a lot in such a short space of time, Lizzie now has so much to look forward; as she lets us know her plans for summer: “I’ve got loads of festivals planned, so I need to start saving fast. “I’m planning on going to Parklife, Lost Village, Leeds Festival and also hoping to go to Primavera in Barcelona if I can stop spending money on going out.” So, aside from Lizzie’s undeniable love of music festivals, we wanted to ask one final question – probably the one thing that we were most intrigued about. Having experienced such negativity working with national agencies, would Lizzie actually want to get back into any form of modelling at all? “Well yes, but whilst I build my self-confidence I’m just going to take a break from modelling. I do want to get back into it locally again though just not yet,” answered Lizzie. It seems that (in this region at least) the pressures that amount whilst working with national agencies have failed to drip feed through to the local contacts that Lizzie has made in Hull.

February 2016 | LOCO | 14

With this in mind, there is yet hope for young girls looking to gain local experience, with people that they know and trust. “My local contacts have always been so good to me and I really do want to work with the friends I’ve made in this area again, as I do get a lot of enjoyment from it” explains Lizzie. This response pretty much sums up this modest girl; who not really knowingly has made a hugely positive impact on an issue that without a doubt needs fixing. Even if the message put out by Elizabeth Holland helps but a handful of girls across the country, or in fact the world, this was a message worth sending. Sadly, this case alone will not solve the problem entirely, as we already know from Lizzie’s earlier response that she took inspiration from another young girl in a similar position. However, to end on a positive note amongst the negativity that imparts on this story – Lizzie has come out of this shining and is now doing what she wants, when she wants. And at the end of the day, to Lizzie, her friends and her family, that’s all that matters.

RECLAIMED & REIMAGINED We chat with LOCK&KEY founder John Hallam all about the beauty of bespoke handmade furniture, reclaimed resources & the art of creative woodwork

L THIS PAGE: Featuring some of LOCK&KEY’s unique pieces hand crafted from reclaimed materials

Photography by NELLY NAYLOR

OCK & KEY are a brand new exciting business in the Hull & East Riding area. Priding itself on working predominantly with reclaimed materials such as copper and various types of disregarded wood to elegantly craft them into simply beautiful home-ware essentials. John, the founder of LOCK&KEY initially embarked upon this venture into the world of reclaimed materials by being genuinely astounded at the amount of wood and various other great quality materials that were just simply being thrown away, ultimately going to waste. This provided the spark of inspiration to reuse, repurpose and revitalise these unwanted materials and thus created the opportunity to breathe a whole new lease of life into something that was once deemed ‘useless’ and destined for landfill. With a true passion for creation John has always been a man who has worked with his hands. Combined with an extensive background in both the building and plumbing trades he has blended his experience into the manufacturing process of these hand crafted products that have become truly exclusive to LOCK&KEY. When talking about the process of implementing his vision John says: “There is something uniquely therapeutic about salvaging an item and returning to its once former glory, just as much as finding some old timber that I can re-imagine and re-purpose into a completely

TALKING POINTS

different setting”. By spending the time to continuously learn about old joinery techniques, various wood species and developing a true appreciation for materials John has managed to pursue his ambition of stylishly counter balancing character with individuality to significantly cement LOCK&KEY’s distance from the mass production lines of large modern day furniture companies. John operates an open door policy to discuss creative ideas and potential collaborations in order to achieve those specific needs of the customer and to help create the products that you just simply cannot get anywhere else. From office desks to innovative shelves and even iPhone docking stations the versatile nature of LOCK&KEY enables the opportunity to locally source interior creations and to also be part of the construction process from start to the very finish. LOCK&KEY focus heavily on being an environmentally conscious and ethical outfit in regards to their working practice, using techniques and products that have a low impact on the environment. With a conscientious approach to production all of the materials sourced for ongoing projects are sufficiently reclaimed, however if this is not the case materials are sourced from a range of independent local suppliers. Giving back is also a huge part of the businesses’ fundamental process therefore 5% of every sale made will go to a relevant charitable organisation from the East Riding of Yorkshire Recycling Unlimited. This particular charity helps people who feel socially excluded due to mental health problems. Recycling Unlimited currently provides the opportunity to learn vocational activities such as joinery techniques and general practical skills. The Pipe & Glass Inn Pipe and Glass takes number two slot in national gastropub awards

A

n East Yorkshire pub has risen through the ranks to take the number two slot in the list of the UK’s best 50 gastropubs of 2016. The Michelin-starred Pipe and Glass Inn at South Dalton, near Beverley, was last year placed at number three in the prestigious Morning Advertiser Top 50 Gastropub Awards, sponsored this year by Estrella Damm. In both 2013 and 2014, it was placed at number four. This year it was behind only the Michelinstarred Sportsman in Kent, which also took the top slot last year. 2016’s number three is the Star at Harome in North Yorkshire, where Pipe and Glass chef/owner James Mackenzie was previously head chef, and

with which the Pipe and Glass retains strong links. James, who runs the Pipe and Glass with his wife Kate, said: “We’re thrilled to be flying the flag for Yorkshire, with Andrew Pern at the Star at Harome right there beside us. “And I know we’ve said it before, but we can’t say it enough – we couldn’t do any of this without our fantastic and supportive team at the Pipe and Glass.” James and Kate Mackenzie took over The Pipe and Glass Inn in 2006. It has held its Michelin star since 2010, and was also Good Food Guide National Dining Pub of the Year for 2015. The Top 50 Gastropubs Awards are organised by industry magazine The Publican’s Morning Advertiser, and are

judged by a Voting Academy including gastropub operators (who can’t vote for their own pubs), food writers, pubco catering development managers and executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators – as their website says: “This really is the industry’s choice.” For further information on the Awards, please visit: www.top50gastropubs.co.uk To see what the Top 50 Gastropub Awards say about the Pipe and Glass: http://www. top50gastropubs.com/pub-profile/thepipe-and-glass/ For further information on the Pipe and Glass Inn: www.pipeandglass.co.uk February 2016 |

Pushing the Boundaries We check out the brand new addition to Hull’s historic Old Town - Furley & Co

H

By TOM HORNER

Hull’s heritage is something that should be celebrated in every way possible, especially prior to that all-important year, 2017. The cobbles of Hull’s old-town are a real pull for tourists from far and wide, as this part of the City hides treasures that unbeknown to many a local are unique in every sense of the word. Furley & Co is no different, as they set out to be a cultural “ambassador” for a number of reasons. This converted Victorian shipping building is as bohemian as you will find in the surrounding area for sure, housing trinkets that can only be described as ‘Hull’ – a theme that they are extremely proud of. Speaking with Managers Dee, Bea and Simon (who are self professed ‘geeks’ of their trade) it was more than apparent that this is no 9 to 5 job for them. The knowledgeable trio were quick to impress the level of passion that they share for the place, though I didn’t really need much persuading. “We want to be cultural, but with a difference. We want to be raw – even to the point in fact – you know, what you see is what you get,” explains Bea. Now, I must say that it isn’t uncommon for a bar/restaurant to want to go against the grain; however wanting and actually doing are two completely different things. This being said, it is also fairly common for an establishment to take the plunge and try something different – but (and this is a big but) it takes a lot to do it right. February 2016 |

| 22|

Although Furley & Co only opened officially mid December of 2015; the place looks and feels established. You know, the real deal sort of thing. This alone takes time, however with a personable approach, the team at Furley have got the balance of quality, atmosphere and individuality spot on. Their choice of food and drink alone already gives the people of Hull something a little different, with craft ales, locally sourced food and a choice of healthy and indulgent dishes. “We’ve found that you can’t really nip into anywhere in Hull and grab a healthy sandwich. “We have healthy options with our falafel and avocado. I mean we’re going through more avocados than you can say super-food – or we can make you gain a stone in one meal; it’s completely your choice, ” jokes Bea again.“It’s not pretentious at all and it’s all local, but most importantly we’ve had nothing but positive feedback, you know.” With 5 casks and 12 kegs of locally sourced beers, along with locally sourced ciders and wines, the theme, as you might have already realised, is to celebrate products from our region. This New-York Deli meets Yorkshire Pub vibe really feels alien to this part of the world, as Furley & Co. faces Princes Quay and the ever-present food joint, Nando’s. And to be blunt this is admittedly what the team here wants to tackle: “We’re very proud that we’re from Hull but we want to be the place that pushes boundaries – we are going to be the City of Culture after all. “We’ve had people come in and ask for chips. We don’t, because there are just so

many other places that do and we don’t want that,” admitted Dee The clientele that walk through the welcoming doors of Furley & Co is diverse, as the team impress upon me how much they want anyone and everyone to feel welcome. With music to suit all ages playing throughout the day from British Rock, classics from by-gone era’s and much more, whether you’re 20 or 70 you will have your needs met, I’m sure. “Music is a massive thing to us, we try to keep it friendly for everybody as we want everyone to come and enjoy what we’re doing. “We want everyone to come in and have a natter with us. If you want an hour’s chat at the end of the bar, I’m there. Oh and we’re dog friendly,” added Dea.

All in all this place really ticks all the boxes, not just by taking note of what people may want, but by doing what feels right to them. By sourcing local produce and working with local businesses such as The Blending Rooms and Atom Beers, Furley & Co have tapped into a local market that can work to a kind of ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’ agreement (so to speak). All business related affairs aside; Furley & Co really is a place to relax and enjoy good local produce. The place really celebrates the fact that Hull is lucky enough to have some excellent produce on offer, and more importantly the staff are on call and ready to help you with whatever you should wish for whilst under their care.

Gift Guide For Her What to get and how to spoil the one you love by Jenny Barrett of ‘Curious Alice Loves...’ www.curiousaliceloves.wordpress.com Ok, confession time: I’m actually not a Valentine’s kind of a girl! But I’m very into romance and being spoilt by my love, so I’ve created this cheat sheet for those of you who are a little light on ideas...

Some sassy shoes: or boots, are a thoughtful

yet smart buy as they can be worn often and can go with a lot of items in your girl’s wardrobe. Make sure you know her size and what styles she likes before you buy (you could subtly check with her or a friend if you need a hand). Solewish and Public Desire have some great styles right now.

Urban Decay naked palette: I literally struggle to think of a girl I

know who DOESN’T want this make up essential in her life! Buy it now and thank me when your valentine is pleased as punch with her smoky-eyed glam.

A cheeky Kir Royale:

add a little Chambord to your girl's fave champagne or prosecco (personally, I'm a Cava fan). Alternatively, M&S do a great pre mixed version as part of their cocktail range which is delicious.

A Cheerz photo book:

this is a quirky and thoughtful gift all at once! Fill it with your favourite memories and share them together during a cosy night in. Download the app and add in your phone, Facebook and Insta-snaps.

Comedy show tickets:

I consider myself a gal with a GSOH as the old dating ads used to call it! (That’s Good Sense of Humour to those of you not quite old enough to remember) Have a good giggle together, and an excuse for a date night, at one of Hull’s many events - City Hall and Fruit Space both run comedy.

CURIOUS ALICE LOVES...

Bouquet of Flowers: an oldy but goody! They don't have to be roses, and they don't have to biggest bunch the florist does A small arrangement of peonies or tulips look just as gorgeous and won't break the bank. They just need to look pretty, smell nice and preferably not be from a garage forecourt...

SPA Break: romance and relaxation go hand in hand, so spend a lazy day getting steamed and pampered followed by an evening of good food, fine wine and each other.

Treat box:

This one requires a bit more thought and effort but will have maximum impact in creating the 'awwww' factor. Fill a nice box with her favourite little thingssweets she likes, her favourite shower gel, a lovely mug with her go-to hot drink, a bottle of her fave tipple, that candle she uses when she needs to relax... get creative, it'll impress her no end!

Dinner: The way to my heart is definitely through my stomach! If I'm going all out, my go-to eatery is The Mill House in Skidby. For something more laid back and informal, It's Sleepers in Hull/Beverley. Prefer a cosy night in? You can never go wrong with a curry from Ruby Spice.

Hot air balloon ride: up, up and away! A sunrise trip with a breakfast picnic could be the ultimate in romantic gestures (forgetting it'll be the crack of dawn and you'll probably be in thermals!) and an experience you'll both remember fondly.

MOTORS

PAUL WOODFORD

Saab 900 Turbo! Our favourite Motoring Expert Paul Woodford tells us all about the Saab 900 Turbo, his latest film for his classic motoring channel and his appearance at the National Rally Awards.

I

was reminded this week, of the “charm” that we car people so often wax lyrical about when it comes to classic cars. Turns out, it wasn’t that charming. I was handed the keys to a Saab 900 Turbo for my latest film, a car which I idolised as a kid (my ride to primary school was a bright green rally prepared Saab 96!), and a car which I think, genuinely should be included in the National Curriculum. The 900 Turbo has such a kick when the boost kicks in at just over 3,000rpm, that I felt it was my duty to give our eight year old a handson science lesson, and put a huge grin on his face. He now understands the concept of forced induction on the internal combustion engine – beats crocodile clips and 9v batteries, right? Turbos used to be a way of making cars more fun. Now they are used to make cars more economical, more environmentally friendly. The experience you get with driving an ‘80s turbo sports car has gone with modern cars, unless you go further up the food chain of course (I hear the Ferrari 488 GTB makes good use of its turbo!). Sadly, the afore-mentioned “charm” came in the form of a blown engine, resulting in lots of smoke, and some frenzied script shortening to see if we’d shot enough footage to produce a film for my online classic motoring channel. You can see how I got on at classicsdriven.co.uk. In other news, my motoring exploits in 2016 are so far keeping me busy (and on the road!). I’m back on stage for the National Rally Awards in Birmingham, filming for the British Rally Championship at the Auto Sport Show, test driving the new BMW car range at the firm’s new HQ in Hampshire, and I’ll be heading back on screen for the Special Stage rally TV show. We take a look at some of the most stylish Instagram feeds from some of our favourite internet icons It’s the best drug the modern world can offer, it’s a necessity to our daily routine and it’s a total addiction that we flat out refuse to give up. What is not to love? Instagram is the go to place to gain an insight into the world of our loved ones and those who we admire. The very notion of being able to see the up close and personal moments of Khloe Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and even Justin Bieber, whilst at the same time liking the selfie of that co-worker you kind of fancy but haven’t spoke to yet is just perfectly insane. HEALTH

MORE THAN JUST A GYM East Riding Leisure have raised the bar for local leisure centres; investing heavily in a wide range of facilities at ten different sites to suit the needs of all in the local region.

W

By TOM HORNER

hen looking to stay fit, or perhaps get fit after a less than rigorous Christmas period, for many a council run gym may not have previously topped the list of stylish, niche workout complexes. By catering for all in the local area, council gyms have been known to pack out in the early months of the year – bursting with a brigade of New Year’s resolution casuals and fitness enthusiasts alike – however East Riding Leisure’s revamp is working to flatten negative stereotypes across the board. Thanks to continued redevelopment and investment, East Riding Leisure now boasts flagship fitness equipment on offer, with room to accommodate members across ten different sites. Now, when I say flagship equipment you may have guessed that I don’t mean the latest set of sparkly dumbbells – I’m talking about virtual active technology and even virtual coaches alongside traditional trainers and personal fitness coordinators alike. Walk through the streets of LA or trek through the Rockies (yes you read that part correctly) with responsive equipment that moves in conjunction with your chosen setting and level of difficulty on all types of terrain. This may not come as a surprise to those of you who actively use such platforms to stay fit and healthy, but overall the benefits that come with such technology will provide a fresh way of training for many who take out a membership with East Riding Leisure. East Riding Leisure also provide a HealthPlus Performance Programme, allowing members to set goals with the help of personal fitness coordinators over a 30 day period, all as part of your membership.

Furthermore, all ten centres across the East Riding offer world-renowned Les Mills classes and more; all-inclusive in a Premier Membership for just £33 per month – pretty cost effective if you ask me. Now, rather than delving into the finer details and boring you with figures, I would prefer to walk through exactly what a Premier Membership entitles you to. Not only do you gain access to state of the art gym facilities, including ToneZone fitness suites, one membership unlocks access to all ten East Riding Leisure centres. This then means, should you wish to try your hand at badminton or squash or pick up a racket – it’s all included in one price. Fancy a swim? A Premier Membership allows you to choose from any 9 East Riding Leisure pools. Need to grab a healthy bite to eat after a workout? Use your 10% discount in the café vibe eateries – the list of benefits really does run on and on.

Of course, a Premier Membership may not suit those who would perhaps prefer a slightly more casual agreement, or for somebody solely interested in only a fraction of the facilities on offer. This being the case, East Riding Leisure has further memberships available that start at just £23 – again value for money, as well as causal pay as you go options. All in all this revolutionary ploy by East Riding Leisure is in place now to give people from all fitness and leisure backgrounds the opportunity to use state of the art equipment, with great support and customer care. By supplying a range of services, members in the surrounding area now have the choice between a range of sites – many of which have dedicated spin studios and exercise studios. In addition to this range of facilities, East Riding Leisure host courses including NPLQ lifeguarding, instructor qualifications and food safety through to swim teaching awards and pediatric first aid. It’s safe to say that East Riding Leisure has been hard at work. With the development of East Riding Leisure Haltemprice which reopened in Spring 2014 and East Riding Leisure Beverley in April of last year, (both

equipment, with great support and customer care

of which you can take a 360° google virtual tour of on the website) A further £25million redevelopment of East Riding Leisure Bridlington is set to reopen in Summer. It kind of goes without saying now that East Riding Leisure Bridlington will follow in the shiny footsteps of the two previous redevelopment projects; encouraging more people to put their faith in East Riding Leisure. Overall, the benefits to taking out a membership coincides with East Riding Leisure’s ethos of providing a quality, value for money service to rival top private gyms. They have taken on board the qualms and stigma that once coated public organisations and their leisure facilities and turned these on their heads – pooling niche ideas with accessible amenities. In the case of East Riding Leisure Haltemprice, a library, customer service centre, crèche and stylish cafe vibe area now sit alongside state of the art fitness studios, pool and sports halls; providing a full exercise package fit for 2016 and beyond. www.eastridingleisure.co.uk Twitter - @ERLeisure Facebook - EastRidingLeisure www.eastridingleisure.co.uk/ morethanjustagym

BUSINESS

[C4Di]

We take a look into the home of Hull’s digital innovation and the change in mindset it provides to a generation of pioneering business learners

N

By TOM HORNER

early everything we touch today is enhanced, produced or operated digitally. Still, the mere mention of anything ‘digital’ can scare off those who are yet to realise the potential waiting to be unlocked across all levels of well, everything really. The Centre for Digital Innovation (C4Di) is working to squash this mind-set and stands proud sandwiched between Hull’s most iconic figureheads – The Deep and the Humber Bridge. Part of the brains behind this tech workspace is Co-Founder Jon Moss, who believes that this corner of the city is set to blossom: “I think that the Fruit Market is transforming into digital and technology quarter of Hull. We work with businesses and organisations to help them innovate and grow by using technology more effectively and provide a world-class co-working space for people.” This not only makes C4Di the most envied structure in the surrounding area, but also encapsulates a shift in mentality from Hull as we approach 2017. The principal sparks of the City of Culture bid has encouraged complexes like C4Di to tease out local entrepreneurs, digital companies and budding originators coming forward to share the limelight. “This is slightly tongue and cheek but, we only have one rule here and that is – ‘nice people only’. “We’re really keen to make people feel welcome, that enables people to focus and ‘work wonderfully’. We want people to be productive and feel instantly plugged into the community here. “The opportunities for shared work, collaboration and the creation of startups are incredible. We want to help them be more successful and get more business.” Jon explains. Anyway, after opening officially one month ago, C4Di has hit the ground running by promoting a change of mind-set that pushes a new generation of pioneering digital businesses. Nevertheless, as I stated earlier digital technology and business can be an intimidating mix of techy jargon, fancy bells and whistles and all kinds of cutting-edge gadgetry to those who stand looking through the keyhole. Having said all of that, one thing to realise in this bulk of information is this: C4Di is not solely a place for youthful digital types to home their skills – this centre of innovation is open to professionals of all ages and backgrounds, who share a love for digital ambition and creation, including companies who want to learn, use the facilities and benefit from the events and people who are members. With this in mind C4Di instils a feeling of self-belief to those in a position of learning, or to the many who are yet to find their opportunity in the digital world. “One thing to realise is that there are no egos here. We’re in the middleof a co-working revolution, so if you’re a one man band or a team, we can create the perfect environment for you,” explains C4Di’s Co-Founder. The creative ethos behind the project and its’ extensive business support sets this place apart; which then in turn keeps a hold of the ideas and people behind such brainwaves. Sadly in years gone by, many seem to have swiftly flown the nest –travelling to the likes of London, Manchester and Leeds in order to develop further in a competitive market. Even some of Hull’s graduates have overlooked this region’s growing opportunity and hopped on Hull Trains, venturing southwards only to return for Christmas and birthdays. Thankfully, it’s pretty apparent that C4Di has the facilities and ambition to keep those with the knowhow right here.“The doors are open to all types of people in the technology and digital sector. We want people to reap the benefits of a group working space. Our members offer incredible value for money. “We have different areas for different purposes; there are creative zones, quiet zones, we cover every possible angle,” added Jon. By providing members who want to run a startup or digital business with support, advice, the network of like minded people and a wealth of benefits and events, this allows for local opportunity and innovation to stay put – rather than using Hull as a stepping-stone over and over again. This goes to show this region is now at the forefront of digital innovation, giving the people of Hull a new wave of opportunity to ride. www.c4di.co.uk @C4DIhull @jonmoss Co-working membership is £120+VAT per month. Please email Jon at jm@c4di.net to organise a tour.

GIFT GUIDE FOR HIM

A list of gifts which I think most guys would appreciate if their loved one surprised them with on the special day. By Carl Baker from Ablokeseyeview www.ablokeseyeview.co.uk/ The special day is not that far away now and I’d thought I would be an helping hand and put together a list of amazing things I would love to receive from my wife and I think the special man in your life would love too. To be honest I’m not that romantic, but its one of the things I hope to improve on this year.

London brogues Brown with blue suede trim Every bloke needs shoes so why not get him a pair which look extra special, these will go with most outfits and are super comfy. Look good, feel good with these stand out brogues. Thornton’s (big box) Every guy loves chocolate, but we don’t like cheep chocolate. Thornton’s do the best chocolate so why don’t you treat him with the biggest box you can find. If you are lucky he may share.

A crate of beer and a iced pint glass. I’m not the biggest drinker in the world but I do like the odd beer on a night time especially a nice cold one. Maybe buy yourself a iced wine glass so you can enjoy a drink together. February 2016 | LOCO | 38

Straight Outta Compton by various artists. I love music and listen to it every day in the van when I driving from job to job fixing doors. I love hip hop so this album is a must.

A BLOKES EYEVIEW

Spicebomb by Viktor & Rolf After shave is a perfect gift for valentines day and the new Spicebomb by victor & Rolf looks and smells amazing. I don’t have that many aftershaves so this would be perfect addition to my small collection. How could any lady resist coming for a cuddle when you smell beautiful wearing this.

England Rugby League shirt. I’m a massive rugby fan and love wearing rugby shirts, they make great lounging tops and also would look great on you too!

Rally Driving Experience This is something I’ve always wanted to do so wife If you are reading this can you please sort it out. If your relationship is anything like mine then you will probably tell your other half off every ten minutes when hes driving, so why don’t you let him loose in a rally car,so he can get the speed out of his system. Movie night

I’m a massive gamer but don’t often get time, but when I do get time there’s nothing better than sitting down and having a good few hours on the Xbox One. My favourite types of games are adventure games which you can play for hours on end and leave for a week or so, then have another good few hours. Fallout 4 is a massive open map game which goes on for ever!

Dining Out Every bloke knows that the way to a mans heart is to feed them. Also I love dining out and different places. But I’ve found my favourite, it’s called TurtleBay. I’ve been to TurtleBay quite a few time and I would love to go again, in fact I could eat there every weekend, well that’s if I could afford it.

Movie Night Mine and my wife’s first date around 14 years ago, and it was a trip to the pictures, I took her to watch Texas chainsaw massacre, looking back I really don’t know why because horror movies really freak me out. So I think reliving that moment would be great, Its a good way to get close on the sofa also, well that’s if your not hiding behind it. February 2016 | LOCO | 39

ARTS

Artist gives vintage Playboy covers new sparkle Acclaimed British artist Simon Claridge has teamed up with iconic global brand Playboy to launch a new collection paying homage to some of the magazine’s most iconic cover images.

A

vailable to buy at Cottingham’s Artmarket gallery – the UK’s leading independent gallery representing Washington Green Fine Art – the new collection features six cover images dating from 1967 to 1982 which Claridge handpicked after being granted rare access to the Playboy archives. Each of the covers has been transformed into a series of limited edition silkscreen prints, hand signed by the artist and embellished with his signature ‘diamond dust’ finish. This unique technique ensures that no two people will view Claridge’s art in the same way, as light is reflected and refracted off the shiny particles of ‘diamond dust’– an incredibly rare material that was handmade to order for this project. Claridge’s work first caught the attention of the art elite after he filled the windows of the gallery he was working in with his own canvases – without the owner’s permission – and all sold out after the first day. Today, he has garnered international acclaim for his fine art interpretations of iconic figures on silkscreen, including female stars such as Twiggy, Bardot and Monroe. With an emphasis towards vintage styling and classic photographic technique, his much-anticipated new collection embraces Playboy’s glamourous and provocative spirit. Claridge, who joined the Artmarket gallery’s diverse portfolio of February 2016 |

innovative contemporary artists in 2010, says: “Playboy, to me, represents so many firsts… It’s progressive, revolutionary… I cannot emphasise enough the reach and scope of Playboy’s influence. “Andy Warhol is the primary influence in my career; he famously created a Playboy cover cementing the relationship between Playboy and Pop Art, and paving the way for artists like me. I am so proud that my diamond dust collection is to be part of Playboy’s lineage in 20th century culture.” Michelle Power, Gallery Director at the Artmarket gallery, says: “Playboy is one of the most instantly recognisable brands in the world and Simon’s new collection pays homage to this bastion of popular culture. “Playboy’s recent announcement that it will no longer feature nudity within the pages of its magazine reinforces his approach to this new collection which focuses on a range of vintage cover images from the 1960s through to 1980s. “His selection of images – chosen from over 700 covers dating back to 1953 – speaks of his penchant for a primarily ‘70s aesthetic, although the imagery has a timeless appeal.” The new collection comprises six images available in both silkscreen on paper and silkscreen on canvas. Prices start from £995, and portfolio sets are also available. For more information please see: www.artmarket.co.uk
