TOMMY COYLE The harder we fall
It was the 22nd of February 2014, almost a year ago now that Hull born and bred boxer TOMMY COYLE experienced 3 minutes in the ring that not only defined him as a fighter but as a human being.
Coyle’s career was hanging well and truly in the balance. Exhausted and grimacing in agony, he managed to pull himself to his feet , brushed himself down and out of nowhere released a thunderous over hand right that floored his opponent, a shot that would eventually lead him to victory via a 12th round TKO. The 11th round was voted round of the year in a recent poll by ESPN Boxing, with 3 knockdowns, a point deduction and more action than you would normally see in a Having been knocked down 3 times by Argentine lightweight Daniel full 12 rounder. This fight along with the recent explosive demolition Brizuela, resulting in Coyle nursing broken ribs for nearly 6 rounds. of Michael Katsidis showed the world what many in Hull already knew, Tommy was on the end of a vicious left hook to the body at the start that Tommy Coyle is plain and simply one of the hardest men in the of round 11, which once again forced him to his knees. At this exact game and no matter what the result, you know when he steps into the moment in front of nearly 5,000 screaming supporters, ring there will be fireworks. LOCO. Tommy was kind enough to invite us down to his Gym, to watch him train with the Hull KR rugby league side and talk to him personally about his career, his life and what drives him on to never give up on his dream of becoming a world champion.
LOCO. | SPOTLIGHT
Where did the love affair with boxing start?
As a young lad I got into trouble, you know petty things that I did just to get by, I made a lot of mistakes but one thing I’ve never done is lie, my dad always said I would rather have a thief than a liar. Boxing was influential in giving me a way to positively direct my frustrations and do something from which I could gain a sense of achievement and I’m hugely thankful for that.
What’s been the pinnacle of your career so far?
The Brizuela fight without doubt. Being knocked down 4 times, having my ribs broken and then coming back from nearly being counted out to win was unreal. It was a crucial fight at that stage of my career, as a potential show down with Kevin Mitchell was on the horizon.
How did you manage to come back from 4 knockdowns and broken ribs, you must have been in agony?
I was but I always tell myself pain is temporary, it’s just an emotion, it will go, it’s not here to stay. I knew I had to battle through the pain because of how important that fight was in my career. I’m a big believer that the mind is so much stronger than the body and what your mind can conceive your body can achieve.
You touched on the Derry Matthews KO, was this the most significant low point in your career to date?
Absolutely, it was my first fight in front of a big TV audience and a defining moment for me. I was up on points for 10 rounds and then I dropped my guard and took a punch that would have knocked anyone out. I look back on it now as an important moment in my career as I am completely obsessed with development and it pointed out a real flaw in my game defensively, whilst also making me realise just how quickly things can change in boxing.
This year will see a huge fight in Hull with you and Luke Campbell getting into the ring. How will it feel taking on a friend?
It will be a little odd as Luke is a very good mate and I have a hell of a lot of respect for him, for what he’s done in his amateur career but also because he brought big time boxing back to Hull, which helped to announce me on the scene nationally. However, when we get into that ring in summer, we will put our friendship aside and go at it for 36 minutes, then shake hands and embrace at the end no matter what the result. Ultimately for both of us we need to take this fight to progress our careers but also it’s a fight that the public want, so it makes sense from both a boxing and business perspective.
Everyone has an opinion on the outcome, how do you see the fight panning out? Well if you looked at it on paper Luke is technically a better boxer with a stronger skill base and a more colourful amateur record but I don’t think this fight will come down to skill. I think on the night it’s going to be a case of who has the biggest pair of nuts. I sure as hell wouldn’t like the job of trying to beat me in front of 30,000 people in Hull.
Jamie Moore has obviously been important in your recent development as a boxer. What does he bring to the table? Jamie is a great man and a great leader. He was a very similar fighter to me, he’s cut from the same cloth and that gives me a great level of confidence. Jamie was known for his warrior like mentality. He is a book of knowledge, a sky sports analyst and just has a way of breaking an opposition down and devising a game plan. Combined with Nigel Travis, my assistant coach, together we have a dream team. When you go back to the corner after being put on the floor twice and you look into the eyes of a guy who has been there, experienced it and fought through it, it gives you the spirit and belief to never give up and that makes a massive difference both in the gym and in the ring.
You obviously have a very strong mind but surely there must be times when you get scared?
Yeah! Of course but I’m not scared about getting hurt. That’s part of boxing which you just accept. The fear I have is of not achieving. I remember before the Katsidis fight I was scared for the full 12 weeks because I knew the pressure that was on me. I texted Jamie saying I’m scared to death and he sent me a message back to listen to a song by Jessie J called “harder we fall” and she talks about not worrying about what could happen LOCO. tomorrow and just to live for today and to enjoy the ride. She struggled for years to break into the industry but no matter what setbacks she experienced she just kept trying harder and eventually made it and is now one of the biggest artists in the world.
How important has your Dad and wider family been in your personal life and career to date? My dad’s my best mate. We’ve had our ups and downs but he is incredibly important to me and because of how he is I like to be around him as much as I can. I remember he came into the changing room before the Katsidis fight and I could see he was nervous and he said to me, “listen no matter what happens tonight son, I love you and I’m proud of you”. I was shocked because that was coming from a guy that never tells anyone he loves them. I’ve only seen him kiss my mum 3 times in my life. I went into that fight and just went for it because I knew the only thing that really mattered to me was making my Dad proud; you can forget all the rest. I love my family to bits and that’s what stops me leaving. I’m Hull born and bred and could never go past that Humber Bridge. Even though I train in Manchester I could never leave my home.
My message to the kids is talent will only take you so far in whatever you do. The guy who is willing to work the hardest will go the furthest, perseverance and discipline is the key. I do this because ultimately it doesn’t matter how much money you have. We all get old and fragile and if you’re walking across the road and fall, the millions in your bank aren’t going to save you, but if you’ve been a decent guy and helped other people out then someone will spot you and help you up. At the end of the day I just want to get across that road, like everyone else. Listening to Tommy talk openly about his passion for boxing, his relationship with his Dad and his selfless approach to giving back to people less fortunate than him is truly inspiring. Personally, sitting across the table from him I was taken aback by the level of emotion in his voice, the fire in his heart and the positivity in his mind. Tommy is black and white about everything yet amazingly composed, calm and eloquent; looking into his eyes you see drive, belief and a burning desire to succeed. Just being in his presence you know that no matter what gets thrown at him, he will take it and throw it back twice as hard. Equally as soon as the final bell rings, win or lose you know he will shake the opponents hand like a true gent. It was an absolute pleasure to be in his company and we thank him for allowing us to get to know him both as a fighter and as a man.
Can you talk to us about some of the work you do You can see Tommy Coyle fight Martin Gethin on the 7th of in the community and why it’s so important ? I never had anything as a kid. Working with my old man on the markets, some days you would do well and other days you wouldn’t take a penny, so you learnt never to expect much because life was so uncertain. Now I’m in a position where I get paid to do something I love and I want to give back whilst I’m in the position to do so. We give all our youngsters free ‘Team Coyle’ training wear and we are hoping to make the academy free to every child under 16 soon. We invite the Hull KR boys down to train, we do Boxfit classes and our ‘Boxclever’ campaign is becoming more and more popular with 8 schools now involved.

T H E OPE N I NG PRODUCTION East Riding Theatre in Lord Roberts Road, Beverley has officially opened and we were lucky enough to attend the opening production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ adapted by Vincent Regan. Audience feedback on Vincent Regan’s stage adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’ already surpasses expectations. Comments include ‘we felt as though we were in Dickens’ world’ and many people felt emotionally moved by the production, the performances and the ambience of the theatre. Volunteers worked around the clock to get the theatre ready in time for a hectic festive schedule. Project manager Sue Kirkman said: “We worked until midnight every day the week before opening to get things ready and although there was a moment when I wasn’t sure we would be ready, by curtain up, every last job was completed. I am absolutely delighted to hear the positive comments from our audience, who have arrived in droves to be a part of the theatre”. “Many people have told me personally and via our social media pages that West End quality has come to the East Riding.” “We knew we had set the bar high and that A Christmas Carol would engage audiences but it really makes our efforts worthwhile to hear such praise and kind support. Our professional actors have all brought something of their own, and the Director, Mike Friend, used Vincent’s incredible adaptation, to give this old tale
a new lease of life.” “Everyone worked so hard and had so much to do to get the building ready. I am thrilled that the cafe bar has been full every night and there is a real buzz within these walls. You would never know that the bar had only just been installed the day before opening, it already feels established, like home for us all.” “East Riding Theatre presented Barrie Rutter’s ‘One night Stand’ on 12th December, prior to the official launch. The evening proved a great way to test the venue out; the house was full and the audience were brilliant. This is what theatre is all about – ‘intimate, atmospheric and enthralling’ – are just some of the comments we’ve been receiving during the interval in the bar.”
experience the quality they expect from professional theatre. Now ERT is here, on the doorstep, and future productions are set to get better and better. With the help of the local community our dream has turned into a reality but we won’t rest on our laurels – we have lots more work ahead” “I invite local people to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and review the performance for us.”
The performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’ was a true testiment to the quality of talent and effort that has gone into not only the show’s production but the entire theatre itself and from all of us here at LOCO. we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the entire team who made it all possible. SAVOUR THE FLAVOUR Loco Magazine Editorial The age old comparison between food and art is a parallel that can be interpreted in multiple ways, depending entirely on two viewpoints, the creator and the observer. The natural visual equivalence being the symmetry of vibrant colours, multiple textures and abstract creations, that slowly take shape on a clean canvas. Martyn Shaw, Head Chef and Patron of ‘The Dining Room’ in Driffield offers a creators perspective, “A painting can take hours, days or weeks to create but it lasts for decades without fading. A sculpture can take weeks, months or years to build but it will last for centuries without eroding. A la carte food on the other hand can take hours, days, weeks to prepare and yet it disappears in mere minutes. A fleeting moment that once devoured can’t be relived”. According to Martyn this means all that Chef’s can aim to do is to harness the joy of food, in order to create a small but powerful emotion, a memory that will live on in people’s minds after their physical creations have departed the plate.
We visit The Dining Room in Driffiled located on Middle Street South to discover Martyn Shaw’s colourful contemporary cusine
Listening to Martyn talk about his approach to cooking is mesmerising. The dedication, commitment and passion to cultivate and hone his skills in order to continually push the culinary boundaries and deliver fresh, fun and flavoursome food is simply astounding. A typical day starts with a trip to the local butchers, fishmongers and grocery stores to source the freshest local produce. Martyn believes this is plain and simply the most important stage in the whole process, saying, “I don’t write a menu until I know exactly what fresh produce is available. I will source what I can and then decide on how to combine the ingredients to deliver a sophisticated yet unique offering”. The truth is whilst most high class restaurants will oversell their dishes with long triple barrelled titles and essay length descriptions, Martyn keeps his menu remarkably simple as he believes the food should do the talking, “I don’t think it’s necessary to tell the customers every little detail of where something is sourced and how it has been cooked, the ingredients should sing for themselves”. Martyn is classically trained with experience gained in a number of top restaurants in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. The bulk of his inspiration however comes from his time travelling the world working as an engineer in the merchant navy, “I discovered so many great cuisines and combinations of flavours from areas like the Far East. Fundamentally the principles of cooking are always the same at an elementary level, such as ‘Duck a l’Orange’, the acidity of the orange cutting through the fat of the duck. As soon as you understand these basic rules you can start switching with similar components to create a completely different flavour profile”. LOCO. MAGAZINE | -18- | ISSUE 002 |
The restaurant itself is relatively low key as the name suggests, with just five tables set in warm rustic surroundings creating a simple, contemporary and sophisticated ambience, that aptly reflects both Martyn and his style of cuisine. From a functional perspective the layout also enables Martyn to keep the cooking personal, with only him in the kitchen it ensures complete consistency in quality and service. The Dining Room at its core is all about being understated; from the name and layout, to the décor and menu with both an a la carte and taster offering. This wonderful little restaurant focuses purely on ‘the love of food’, simplifying everything to ensure that the customers can enjoy fantastic local produce, creatively combined to deliver first class dining. It is clear after experiencing an evening at The Dining Room that the key difference between art and food is the ephemeral nature of the latter. The level of time, dedication and talent that goes into producing a first class meal is mind blowing and yet from the moment it leaves the kitchen it’s gone forever. Leaving nothing but a vision to savour, a taste to remember and a stack of dirty plates to wash. The a la carte menu is priced at £23.50 for two courses or £29.50 for three courses. There is also a taster menu available five courses for £37.50 and seven courses at £45. To book a table at The Dining Room call 01377 254444.

THE B O AT H O U S E A former furniture shop on Newland Avenue, Hull has been converted into a quirky contemporary restaurant and coffee shop, that is now home to some of the best grub and coffee in East Yorkshire. Rustic furniture, filament lights and an eclectic mix of music make The Boathouse a great place to come and chill whilst enjoying anything from a cocktail and a burger, to a coffee and a cake. The laid back atmosphere and dark ambient lighting makes you feel like you’re sat in a contemporary coffee house in Camden or Soho. The whole concept of choice and variety is mirrored on the menu with classic burgers available with a multitude of toppings from blue cheese and bacon to Monterey Jack and Pepperoni, all priced around £9.50. If you have a real appetite you can also opt for ‘the really big burgers’ which pretty much do what they say on the tin, available in either 8 or 16 oz sizes and priced at £13.50£16.50 you better have a belly bigger than your eyes. Finishing the meal off with one of the award winning coffees sourced from Hull’s renowned Blending Rooms is a must. The Boathouse isn’t just about the food and drink, according to manager Matt Gibson who says, “it’s all about creating an experience that isn’t currently available in the area. We want people of all ages to come here, chill out, grab a coffee, maybe a bite to eat and just feel relaxed and rejuvenated when they walk out”. Matt is currently working with owner Phil Waltham on developing a number of new features including a dedicated cocktail bar (see right image) as well as some quirky event nights such as ‘Burger and Beats’ with guest DJ’s. Combining great food and drink in a relaxed and friendly environment, The Boathouse is the perfect place to sit back, relax and create exactly the experience you want.

AUNT BIBBY’S
One of the newest additions to East Yorkshire’s ever increasing quantity of American style eateries, Aunt Bibby’s, located at the top of Princes Avenue, Hull is pretty hard to miss with its vibrant neon lights giving you a hint as to the brash and bold flavours that lie within. Billed as a Smokehouse Saloon, stepping through the door you are greeted by a typical American oak bar serving a range of IPA beers, cocktails and spirits. Splitting the bar and the restaurant are the classic western style swinging saloon doors, adorned with the bold ‘Bibbys’ branding. Climbing up the spiral staircase and taking a seat amongst the Uncle Sam posters, Brooklyn signs and Buffalo’s head…yes a Buffalo’s head, you could be forgiven for forgetting that you’re sat in a restaurant in the middle of Hull. The vast menu has everything from sandwiches to steaks, burgers to ribs plus the classic list of sides which more often than not are lathered in pulled pork and barbecue sauce. Tucking into ‘The Fat Pig’ priced £9.50 you realise why smokehouses like this are so successful. The combination of a 6oz beef patty, cheese, bacon, onion rings and Bibby’s own burger sauce, packed into a brioche bun provides an explosion of flavours that when combined with the amazing sweet potato fries can very quickly send you spiralling into a food coma. The friendly service, chilled out atmosphere and fantastic food make Aunt Bibby’s a great stop off for a quick bite in the heart of Hull.

QUICK BITE FEATURE
PURPLE PIG Nestled in Trinity Square, Hull, The Purple Pig may look from the outside somewhat low key in comparison to its bold and brash competitors, however once you step inside you realise that this isn’t your typical American style burger bar. They have taken the original smokehouse concept and shaken it up. Huge flat tin pigs adorn the walls with striking purple backlights bringing them to life whilst hanging incandescent lights create a mellow moody ambience as you await your feast and boy is it worth the wait. Opting for the flagship ‘Purple Pig Burger’ priced £9, this beast of a burger is made with 2 freshly made 4oz patties topped with melted jack cheese, pulled pork, onion ring, honey bbq sauce and their very own ‘Pigginaise’ all squeezed into a brioche bun with 2 mini sausages wrapped in bacon skewered into the top and served with skin on fries. The flavours are mind blowing and the real beauty of this beast is in the sourcing and production of its ingredients. Purple Pig have their own distribution kitchen based in Middlesborough which sources quality local beef to produce the patties, which are then sent out to each of the 4 restaurants, thus ensuring maximum quality and consistency. According to area manager Colin Dobbie, Purple Pig is not just about the food it’s about revelling in a greater level of experience, saying, “we want people to come here and go away feeling like they have had an awesome experience not just a big burger and a coke served in a jam jar. We do crazy features on the menu like putting smiley faces in our ‘Frankie Five Fries’ which if you find one you have to shout up ‘I love frankie five fries’ in front of the whole restaurant to win a cocktail”. The madness doesn’t stop there with the restaurant advertising that if you turn up in purple underwear and show the staff you get a free cocktail. WE CHAT TO EAST YORKSHIRE’S OWN HOLLY ALLENBY ABOUT HER CONSCIOUSLY CREATED CLOTHING
Holly Allenby at The Acey Launch Party www.the-acey.com LOCO. MAGAZINE | -30- | ISSUE 002 |
LOCO. | STYLE
Holly Allenby, 24, from Hessle bonds innovation with integrity, to produce a platform for style-conscious women to buy into a fashionable array of consciously created clothing. Fast fashion continues to focus on style over sustainability, with a large number of major retailers coming under the spotlight in recent years over the ethics and morality of their sourcing and manufacturing practices. Unfortunately as clothing trends become more erratic and prone to change, many brands and retailers have seemingly been forced to sacrifice or compromise on elements of their supply chain. This trend is clearly unsustainable and local woman Holly Allenby has set out on a mission to step change the direction of women’s fashion with her new web business ‘The Acey’. Inspired by Holly’s time working as Marketing Manager for TOMS, a shoe company famous for donating a pair of shoes to impoverished children for every pair they sold. Holly describes her brand by saying “The Acey is all about not having to sacrifice style for sustainability. Most people think that if clothing is produced ethically then something else must have been compromised in the design process and this is not the case. All our brands are very clever in the way they minimalise their social and environmental impact, using innovative new fabrics and more efficient production methods, none of which sacrifice the quality or style of the garment”. The Acey works with a number of forward thinking brands from around the world that consciously create everything from
jewellery to footwear. You can even read each brands story on the website, creating ultimate transparency for potential customers. Holly describes how she selects these brands, saying “we look at everything from the people to the products. It’s imperative that each designer mirrors the culture and character of The Acey”. Despite having to overcome a few hurdles and a lot of late nights, Holly is delighted to be running her own business and is excited by what the future holds, “It’s been a lot of time and effort getting to this point but we are starting to reap the rewards, with orders coming in from places such as Dubai and the United States”. It just goes to show the ever increasing demand for provenance when it comes to retail goods such as clothing and jewellery. We wish Holly and her team the best of luck in continuing to drive this cultural trend, of sustainable style in contemporary women’s fashion. LOCO. MAGAZINE | -31- | ISSUE 002 |

The rolling hills, unspoilt countryside and its close proximity to the historic cities of York and Beverley has kept them enchanted with this area upon the instant they arrived. Countryside Chic East Yorkshire based family business Bonties, combines practicality with style, to deliver a fresh and functional fashion fix for the discerning female shooter.
LOCO. MAGAZINE | -34- | ISSUE 002 |
LOCO. | STYLE A mother and daughter duo from Lund in East Yorkshire have set out on a mission to step change the female offering in contemporary country clothing by providing a vast range of luxury female shooting attire, sourced direct from continental Europe. Patricia and Isabel Bontoft come from an esteemed family of shooters. Patricia’s husband and Isabel’s father, David is the managing director of leading shotgun cartridge provider, Hull Cartridges, which has over 70 years of revered heritage in the industry. Growing up around shooting grounds, Isabel often felt that fashion was nearly always pushed to one side in favour of practicality. She describes this by saying, “I would turn up at a shoot and everyone would look identical, dressed head to toe in generic khaki and tweed. Spotting my mum amongst the crowd was rather difficult”. Isabel’s mother, Patricia, states that whilst mens country clothing has come a long way over the last 10 years, womens wear hasn’t been given the level of attention it deserves, “The big brands simply choose to replicate mens styles and produce selected lines in smaller sizes, with the net result that all ladies turn up at shoots looking exactly like mini men”. The solution to this problem was identified on a recent trip to Paris, when David and Patricia met dutch-born designer Petra Kunne at a shooting trade event. Petra designs and produces a vast array of luxurious, chic countrywear for the women of France under the brand
Isabel Bontoft name Dianne Chasse. Using only the highest quality organically farmed leathers and furs, ranging from goat leather to rex rabbit and fox fur. Dianne Chasse is quickly becoming a leading brand across continental Europe. Patricia immediately saw the opportunity to bring the brand across the channel and so when Isabel returned from London College of Fashion earlier this year, the pair agreed with Petra to become the sole supplier to the UK market, delivered through the online store ‘Bonties’. The biggest attraction according to Isabel is the versatility of the clothing, “we have a number of crossover lines which means they can be used for riding, skiing or simply outdoor walking. We even have a number of customers who don’t engage in outdoor activities but love the French cut and general styling of the garments”. Bonties have continued to expand their online range over recent months and with customers from London to Edinburgh, it seems that countryside chic is becoming an ever increasing trend across the whole country and yet few brands truly optimise those words more pertinently than the team behind Bonties. A small handful of their selected lines are pictured on our shopping bag page with many more available online at: www.bonties.co.uk priced between £50 to £600.

RICHARD McKEATING Our brand new health and fitness expert Richard McKeating is one of the country’s top personal trainers, winning the coveted Men’s Health PT of the year award in 2013, as well as having Sport England and Hull KR on his CV. A former Royal Marine Commando, Rich focuses on long term sustainable training methods to create a healthy balanced lifestyle, not just a short term fix.
THE GYMS ARE FULL RIGHT NOW, IN A FEW MONTHS THEY’LL BE EMPTY AGAIN, ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER BUNCH OF FAILED WEIGHT LOSS ATTEMPTS. Where does it go wrong? Health is a lifelong commitment, you can focus short term for a good result, but as soon as you stop, your results disappear. When you have a bath you smell nice, but a few days later you need another one. If your nutrition or exercise program doesn’t feel sustainable, then it won’t last. Focus on habits, be active a few times a week, it really doesn’t matter what you do, so long as you do something. Go for nice long walks and relax, try a class, hit the weights, go on a treadmill. Don’t wait to feel motivated, you won’t be. If you need structure for a specific result then speak to a fitness instructor. Exercise will help you feel great, look good and give you better odds of living longer!! If you want to be a certain clothing size for a holiday then what you eat is crucial. It doesn’t have to be complicated, eat lots of fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of plain water, choose carbohydrates like potatoes, rice, quinoa and beans, proteins like unprocessed meat, fish, eggs, low fat dairy and fats like nuts, avocado’s, olive oil and coconut oil. After taking the time to have a conversation with one of East Yorkshire’s most successful pyschotherapists, Chris Willingham, it was clear to see that his passion for both people and the promotion of well being is doing just that.
It is evident that Chris is fueled by a desire to provide a fullfilling service to those who need a helping hand.
