The June issue of is an extremely special production and a huge milestone in our development. I’m absolutely astonished by the standard of our latest cover and extremely proud of our small but supremely talented team in creating one of our greatest editions to date. Yet just over a month ago in a dark desolate auditorium at Hull Truck Theatre we had absolutely nothing, other than the unrelenting belief that we were going to build something beautiful. Smiling with enthusiasm at the rows of vacant red seats soon to be filled with an eager audience awaiting our latest production, we asked ourselves one question... How on earth do we create beauty?
The answer came from Mark Babych, Artistic Director at Hull Truck Theatre, he
simply said...
BE DIFF The curtain is raised on Issue 5 and the masses gasp as they see the first glimpse of a new beginning, a new perspective...the start of
something beautiful.

A BEAUTIFUL INSPIRATION I
n 1950, at the tender age of 15 years old, Sophia Loren and her mother left their family home in Naples headed for the Italian capital Rome, in pursuit of their one dream, to become actors. A year later Loren landed her first role in the 1951 film Quo Vadis. Various bit part roles followed, before she finally delivered her breakthrough performance as the title character in the 1953 film Aida. A year later another leading role in The Gold of Naples established Loren as one of the rising stars in Italian cinema. The next 18 months would see Sophia Loren become one of the most sought after actresses in Hollywood, starring alongside Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra in the 1957 classic The Pride and Passion. In less than seven years Loren had blossomed from a delicate little school girl to a global film star, becoming an icon of beauty, hope and belief. She was the golden girl, in a golden age of cinema. Yet seven years earlier at the age of 14, she had just taken part in her first beauty pageant, wearing a dress made from window curtains. For Sophia, the bright lights of the big screen were little more than a fleeting dream. There is something uniquely galvanising about not knowing where you are going to be in the next 12, 18 or 24 months, a statement that is illustrated perfectly by East Yorkshire’s very own beauty queen turned actress, Zara Holland. I meet Zara at her family owned Fashion Boutique MIMI’s in Hessle, she tells me she is not looking great after a late night casting trip to London, which had her catching the first train back home from Kings Cross earlier that morning. I can’t help but disagree with her confession. Standing by the rails of vibrant clothing she simply dazzles, her honeyed skin, megawatt eyes and unassuming smile making it clear to see why only 12 months ago she was crowned Miss Hull and District 2014. She is however the first to inform me that the competition is not simply about looks, “There is so much more to beauty pageants like Miss Hull and Miss England. There are now fitness, charity and talent rounds, which means that the girls have to be the all round package and not just look the part”. Zara’s inspiration comes primarily from her mum, Cheryl Hakeney, who was once also a winner of Miss Hull and came second at the national Miss England finals. “I used to see all of the photos and sashes from the pageants my mum did and it just made me really determined to give it a go and see what I could achieve”. Beauty Pageants have for many years been deemed as a false glorification of image and have received fierce criticism for teaching young girls that beauty is solely measured by your exterior appearance. Zara insists that whilst this may have been true in the past, the industry is most definitely changing. “Girls from all walks of life are now entering, whether they are 6ft or 5ft,
size 8 or size 12, models or farmers, it is far more accessible than it has ever been and that is down to the way the competitions are constructed and promoted, placing more focus on the contestants attitude and aptitude”. Zara recently returned to judge the finals of Miss Hull and District 2015, in which she passed over the crown to deserved winner Mary-Ann Cunningham. Asked if it was an emotional moment for her she replied, “Yes and no, it is sad to no longer be Miss Hull but it has given me such a fantastic platform to go on and do other things, the people I have met and the memories I have created have been amazing and I know Mary-Ann is the perfect person to carry it on”. It is interesting that Zara sees the crown almost like a baton of obligation, giving it’s possessor the power to drive progression in themselves and inspire it in others. This mentality is certainly evident under her reign, since being crowned Miss Hull, Zara has appeared on every mainstream soap, she has been involved in national advertising campaigns, has reached the final of Miss London and is now preparing for the semi-finals of Miss England and yet she has still found time amongst all of this to support and mentor other girls from the area, who are wanting to follow in her footsteps. “It has been a whirlwind since I won Miss Hull, i’ve been focusing a lot on my castings and modelling work but equally have spent a lot of time trying to offer some guidance and support to young girls who are seeking a way to develop themselves both personally and professionally”. Zara feels that the role is more about standing for an idea, rather that just simply using the title for personal gain, “I have always wanted to share my experiences with other girls, to hopefully inspire them to chase their dreams. I remember getting a message from a young girl on Facebook who wanted some advice regarding beauty pageants, she said that she really looked up to me as a role model, which really shocked me but was equally one of the most rewarding moments in my life, to know that I have helped inspire and support another young girl with her aspirations”. Zara has achieved all of this success whilst working around her full time role at MIMI’s Boutique, where she has recently been made a Director. The boutique has stores in both Beverley and Hessle and was built up by Zara’s mum Cheryl. “I’m so proud of my mum she has managed to build this business from nothing and I’m honoured to now be a joint director. We have built up a great

reputation in the area with the Hessle store now approaching its 6th year anniversary and Beverley its 3rd. I’m enjoying getting more involved in the sourcing and buying of our garments but equally love speaking with our wonderful customers”. When asked how Zara felt the business could develop over the next few years she said “We would love to grow the brand either through increased number of sites or a different format but nothing is confirmed as of yet”. It is amazing to think that Zara is working here full time, 6 days a week and still managing to fit castings and shoots around her job, “To be honest I couldn’t do it without my mum, she is my inspiration and my rock, she allows me to be flexible with work so I can fit my acting and modelling around it. Equally my granny is a star, if I need to leave the shop early or I won’t be in until late she is always there to help”. Family is clearly a key factor in Zara’s life and something she believes is essential to keeping you grounded and focused. “I have never been a confident person, at school I wasn’t very academic and struggled in most classes apart from drama and music. Yet my mum always encouraged me to follow my dreams, even if that meant not going onto college or university. I would honestly give that advice to anyone now because whilst education is important, if you are not passionate about pursuing it beyond school, then you need to find what you are driven by and focus your energy on that instead. I’m a big believer that you really can achieve anything in life, as long as you want it enough to never give in”. Zara’s own character has been tested on numerous occasions with knock backs and obstacles but she has never shied away from a challenge and believes every experience is an opportunity to grow no matter whether it is positive or negative. “At the recent Miss London Finals I didn’t manage to place and I was really disappointed in myself initially but then on reflection I looked at it and decided that it obviously wasn’t the right fit for me, i’m now focusing on my fitness and charity work to ensure I’m in a stronger position come the Miss England semi-finals in July”. Zara believes the biggest issue facing her and other contestants both in the world of pageants and in commercial modelling is that of the stereotypical appearance of models. “Whilst the industry is changing at a local level and becoming more accessible, there is still a significant bias towards the 5ft 10 size 6 models at the very top end and i’ve never really been sure why this is the case. We are in the 21st century surely we should be representing a broader range of shapes and sizes, to show a truer reflection of society and encourage more diversity in the media. I hope that I can try to break that mould and help show a way for other young girls
who don’t meet the ‘standard’ specification to achieve a successful career in modelling”. Whilst Zara continues to balance her time between the boutique and her modelling career, her real passion lies in acting and she is certainly making some big leaps in the world of Television. Her most recent performance as Portia in Emmerdale has led to a role in a new period drama, as well as a raft of local and national castings. “I’ve always loved being involved in drama and music, from school to stagecoach. I’m trained in musical theatre and still regularly take part in acting classes in Leeds and London”. Zara believes no matter what you choose to be, you have to continue to practise and hone your craft in order to be successful and nowhere is this more relevant than in the world of acting, “You can’t stop, you can’t think negatively and you can never give in because you just don’t know how close you are to making it. I remember going for a casting one wednesday morning and getting a call back in the afternoon saying I hadn’t got the part and I was absolutely devastated. Yet within an hour I got another phone call saying I had got the part for Emmerdale and then another confirming the promotion for Jet 2. It was a massive turnaround in just one day and goes to prove that if you never give in, then you can never fail”. Listening to Zara speak with such passion and desire about her vision is infectious, it is inspiring and genuinely beautiful. She is not afraid to voice her dreams and even less afraid to chase them. It is a completely unique trait that not many people can obtain, the relentless belief that success and failure are not measurable destinations but merely stepping stones on a journey towards a greater level of happiness. She describes this mindset by saying, “With acting you never know what is going to happen, you could not get a phone call or a casting for months and then all of a sudden get two in one day, you just have to keep believing in yourself and believe that anything can happen”. Only 19 years old, Zara has the world at her feet, she has achieved so much already and yet her dreams continue to grow and evolve, with big screen acting and musical theatre already on the horizon. She is inspiring a generation of young girls to think big and never give up on chasing their dreams. Zara embodies the belief that success is limitless and not bound by time nor achievement, simply having faith in her own future will ensure she never stops striving for improvement. Sophia Loren, now 80 years old continues to appear on the red carpet and on the big screen, why? Because as she stated in a recent interview “I still get up every morning and go for a walk because I always believe that around every corner there could be something beautiful”.
“You just have to keep believing in yourself and believe that anything can happen”

STYLE
Whilst the focus is usually upon the dress, veil and jewellery no bride can ever walk down the aisle without the symbolic bridal bouquet. Flowers bring colour, life, and aroma to any venue, whilst equally acting as a personal symbol of the union between man and wife. It is therefore essential that you make the right choice when choosing both your flowers and your supplier. The Daisy Chain in Skirlaugh is the perfect place to help you make those difficult decisions ahead of your big day. Rachael Oliver opened The Daisy Chain just over a year ago, initially located within Skirlaugh Garden Centre. Having trained at Bishop Burton college Rachael built her experience working for a local florists, before making the decision to open her own business nearer her home in Sproatley. Rachael recently moved to a designated shop in the centre of Skirlaugh, allowing her to add her own style and build the brand. “The garden centre was a great base but I always wanted to put my own stamp on the shop and so when our current unit came available I immediately felt it would be a fantastic opportunity to be more visible to a broader range of potential customers”. The Daisy Chain provides a beautiful array of fresh flowers for all types of events and occasions from weddings, and funerals, to birthdays and anniversaries. The shop supplies wedding flowers across the whole of Yorkshire and has built up a great reputation in the process, covering everything from the planning and preparation to delivery and decoration. A recent customer review said, “The Daisy Chain made a very difficult decision of choosing which flowers to use for our wedding very easy. The meeting allowed us to get our initial colour scheme and ideas across, Rachael then turned them into a reality by letting us know what would best to use and came up with some unique ideas for our venue. The flowers really completed the look of our wedding and made the day extra special”. Rachael plans to to grow the brand simply by continuing to provide great customer service, whilst ensuring she supplies only the very best flowers no matter what the occasion. “It is important that whether a customer is spending one or one hundred pounds that they get the same level of service and a high quality product in return for their money”. Relatively new to running her own business at the age of 24 Rachael is excited about what the future holds for The Daisy Chain. “My family have been very supportive and helped me build up the business from scratch. I hope that I can show to other young people that with enough dedication, passion and belief you can build your own successful business, no matter how old you are”. iobhan Browne has worked in the beauty industry for 33 years. During that time she has trained with and worked for some of the most well known brands in the UK and Europe. Siobhan bought Cloud Nine Beauty Salon in Beverley almost 5 years ago, and has taken the business from strength to strength. With the wedding season upon us, we were keen to experience the recently rebranded and refurbished salon in all of its new found glory, meet the team and chat with Siobhan about the treatments on offer. Originally from Yorkshire, Siobhan worked in Manchester for a number of years before moving overseas to work as a freelance beauty therapist in Switzerland. She said “I’ve hugely enjoyed the challenge of developing Cloud Nine, especially as it was already an established business. Our client base is wide and varied and it’s a pleasure to work in a thriving town with such great people.” An unmistakable homely and welcoming atmosphere greets you as you walk through the door. With a shabby chic decor, cosy fireplace setting and treatment rooms so charming, it’s hard to resist booking one of their trademark bespoke facials! The salon boasts an impressive variety of coveted brands. Manicures and pedicures are performed using Shellac gels, a popular choice all year round as nails remain chip free for up to 14 days, and of course the ever popular OPI polishes. “At this time of year we become busy with bridal makeup consultations. Our brand of choice is Jane Iredale mineral makeup. Extremely gentle on the skin, it gives a beautiful, natural finish.” Siobhan’s true passion, however, lies in skincare.
Cloud Nine uses Decléor, CACI, Crystal Clear, and the most recent addition, Dermalogica. With staff member Lisa Hornby specifically trained in the Dermalogica product range, they are excited about incorporating the treatments into an already impressive list.“We are one of the few salons in the area to offer the Dermalogica Biosurface Peel, designed to offer the benefits of a chemical peel without the scarring and downtime.” Decléor facials are particularly relaxing, as each one incorporates a soothing massage to leave clients feeling rejuvenated. The salon has recently introduced the new Decléor warm stone massage, a sublime full body treatment using warmed essential oils. It has so far received exceptional feedback with clients raving that they ‘floated’ out of the salon. Staff member Lauren Stainforth is a notable facialist in the area, having been dubbed the CACI Queen by Cloud Nine clients! CACI is a non surgical facelift treatment, extremely popular in the UK, with a large celebrity following. Lauren is particularly skilled at developing bespoke treatment plans based on specific requirements and skin types. “I’m incredibly proud to work with such a dedicated and hard working team. Our experienced therapists, Lauren, Lisa and Rachel, are trusted by our clients to provide personal, friendly and thoroughly enjoyable treatments. For us, any treatment we provide involves attending to individual needs and ensuring any questions or concerns are taken care of. Our staff training programme is ongoing because for me, continuing to improve as we grow is essential to ensuring we only offer the best service. I hope my unwavering passion for the industry is evident throughout the salon and we look forward to welcoming new clients!” Cloud Nine Beauty Salon is at 9 Landress Lane, Beverley, East Yorkshire, HU17 8HA. SLEEK STYLING By Sam Johnson
W Featured above: This month’s cover star Zara Holland Below: Bridal Model Sarah Holvey
orking both in HARRINGTONS salon and with renowned styling company ghd, styling hair is at the heart of what I do. This season bridal hair is about texture. In our bridal shoot I worked with dual texture, creating beautiful sleeked styles with so much shine they’re almost wet look and combining them with braids and buns with a much dryer texture. Bridal hair should be elegant and classy, so even when achieving a ‘dry’ texture you need to make sure your hair looks hydrated and healthy. Your bridal hair should not take over your complete look, it should tie everything together; the dress the makeup etc. If you don’t normally wear your hair up then why change this on your big day? There are endless beautiful looks that we can achieve both up and down. Wearing your hair down? Why not try vintage waves as seen on the catwalks over the past two seasons. Make sure you choose hair accessories carefully.... ‘Bling’ doesn’t always mean better! Ask for real honest advice from your dress fitter and boutique. Somewhere like Elite where you will get an honest opinion. Your stylist will then transform your hair piece into your hair look! Tips: Book a wedding trial at least 4 weeks before Give your stylist visual ideas of what you like. Social media such as Pinterest is great for this! Book your wedding hair well in advance (often wedding dates can be busy periods such as Saturdays and your stylist will get busy). Invest in your hair – It’s your crown! Use professional hair care products and maintain a great quality and condition by visiting your stylist regularly for professional hair cut and colours. Elasticate by TIGI Bed Head (shampoo and conditioner) is perfect for when you want long luscious locks even when you colour or use heat stylers on your hair.

BRIDAL MAKE UP By Lesley Wilks
F
or our Spring Bridal Shoot celebrity make up artist and our resident beauty expert Lesley Wilks, was on hand with her brushes, here’s her top tips for how to achieve your ‘dream make up look’. ‘Your face is the most looked at thing’ on your wedding day, yet your make up it’s often one of the last things you plan and is not prioritized enough. A well planned beauty schedule is essential in the lead up to your wedding day, to ensure your looking and feeling as fantastic as possible. MY TOP TIPS – PRE PLANNING Regular monthly advanced facials such as a Crystal Clear COMCIT or A-lift are the perfect way to plump and boost your collagen levels. Your skin needs to be as flawless as possible on the day. A great skincare routine is essential. My ultimate ‘must have’, professionally groomed eyebrows! Systems such as HD brows often take months of a regrowth programme so start asap. If you’re thinking of having a spray tan on your wedding day, have a trial before to ensure the shade is right for your skin- avoid having your face tanned as this can clog pores and be harder to contour. Invest in some individual lashes or an LVL lash lift treatment- there’s less likelihood of streaking eyes if you shed a few tears! Invest in a good, experienced, professional make up artist on your day- they will ensure your make up lasts as long as you do. Research and look at their work and products that are used. Client reviews are a great way to check them out. Your MUA should get to know you and be able to produce a more ‘polished ‘ version on the day. Your make up trial should be around a month prior to the wedding so its still fresh in yours and your MUA’s mind.
foundation mix with HD brows foundation) it doesn’t want to look too obvious. Don’t be scared to go a bit brighter with lipsticks. Pale colours can often look washed out. If you usually wear a pale colour use this as your base and wash over with a brighter pink or rose colour on top. Use a good skincare product to prepare your skin and drink lots of water the night before to keep skin hydrated. Layer your make up- this is essential to gently layer your application if wanting to avoid eyes creasing, lipcolour bleeding and foundation to stay flawless- remember your make up needs to last all day. I always look for a natural light when doing brides. Make up should look as it is to be seen by the wedding party not for a nightclub! Take yourself in a room or area on your own if possible, to ensure you are relaxed, calm and not disturbed whilst having your MU done. Don’t rush, allow at least 45 mins for your make up. A calm bride is a happy bride. “Always believe that something beautiful is just about to happen”
he arts industry is renowned for being a constant and ever changing landscape. With the perpetual creative nature that is currently flowing through the very veins of our up and coming city, Hull Truck Theatre is a place that not only illuminates our ongoing creative shift but is actively at the forefront. Reflecting the current trends, practices and ultimately constructing a vital lifeline to ensure the progression and succession of our continuous creative growth. We were lucky enough to have a chat with the very captain of that innovative vessel, Mark Babych, Artistic Director, to discuss the direction of the theatre, the trajectory towards 2017 and how applying the arts of theatre can simply enrich other peoples lives. We meet Mark in the foyer of the theatre, a place that aptly reflects the vision of the passionate creatives who reside inside these walls. With its simple and stylish decor surrounded by vibrant posters of recent upcoming shows combined with the hustle and bustle of local creatives the whole place is bursting with a sense of community. Instantly upon meeting Mark it was clear to see that he himself also embodies the same level of infectious passion and innovation that this theatre has devoted its entire existance to. “When you enter this building you don’t just see a place to entertain yourself but an opportunity to be enriched by something new, a place to tread a different path”. Mark is a man of journey, somebody who has a sole purpose of making a difference that’s born out of a long string of industry challenges, the understanding of personal creative growth and a desire to be at the epicentre of a collective endeavor sharing his experience and ideas with the people around him. You can’t help but appreciate his honest yet galvanising approach to help create a transformative experience. “ Its taken its time to build a connection. We have invested heavily in our community work in order to knit ourselves into the fabric of the community. The growth of people and ideas is the absolute heart of what were doing”. The organisation itself has had difficulties along the way with the transition to the new building (now situated on Ferensway) and some financial obstacles combined www.locomagazine.co.uk
with a slight audience drift. Therefore the task requires a certain type of person and for a man who was never taken to theatres as a child and whose creative career began ‘somewhere in the back end of Fagan’s gang’ in a school play it really is a pleasure to see somone truly in their element. Hull Truck’s ongoing commitment to personal development is a crucial part of their current infrastructure. With programmes such as Act 3 and Grow where early career artists have the opportunity to harbour their talents and find something authentic within themselves to the point where even if they choose not to pursue a creative career the skills learnt and nurtured within these programmes can be applied to all future aspects of their lives. “I really believe in personal development and I believe that I could have been a lot better if I had the scaffolding in place”. One of the many striking things about Mark is his complete awareness and belief in the youth. I once read a famous quote by Henry Ford that states “Anyone who stops learning is old, wether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young” and I can’t help but feel this applies to Mark and the great work he is doing at Hull Truck Theatre. He sees himself as just the gate keeper, laying the most fertile ground possible to ensure that the our home grown talent has a place to thrive. “I’m in such a fantastic position and it is an obligation for people in a similar position of mine to open themselves up to the younger generation and figure out how we can suit the needs of a rapidly changing city”. Prior to the official interview with Mark we were both discussing the ways in which the city is undergoing a transformation and what we thought it required along the way. Something I said was “one of the obstacles we have in Hull is that it’s at the end of the line, end of the M62, it’s a one stop destination” to which Mark simply replied “but that’s where you’re wrong, start seeing us at the beginning of the line...think differently”. It was a true pleasure to spend some quality time with Mark and I believe that if everyone shares just an ounce of his enthusiasm and spirit then we will be living in a truly fantastic city. PAUL SPENCE
THE ROAD TO RECOVERY O
n the evening of Easter Sunday 2012 Paul Spence’s life was torn apart by a single traumatic event, the details of which will send a chill down your spine. Paul was enjoying a night socialising with friends in a busy Hull bar, when he became the victim of an unprovoked attack. Confronted in the toilets, Paul was struck with a sickening blow that knocked him off his feet. Falling backwards his head cracked violently against the ceramic toilet floor, forcing his brain to ricochet off the front of his skull. Paul suffered a severe cerebral haemorrhage and frontal lobe contusions that left him in a coma for 5 days and battling for his life in intensive care for nearly a month. Suffering from seizures, memory loss and the inability to think or speak, Paul and his family’s lives had in a matter of moments been changed forever. Walking a tightrope of despair throughout his early recovery, battling demons such as not being able to remember the birth of his own son, not being able to drive, work or feel any real emotional connection with his friends or family, Paul had lost his identity, he had lost his mind. Paul left intensive care in May 2012, in a vulnerable and fragile state, needing day to day care and support from his close family. Describing the early days Paul says, “I knew who I was but I couldn’t really consciously think about anything, I would just spend my days staring out of the window. Weeks and months went by and I would start to steadily remember things about myself and my life, it was like a dimmer switch being turned slowly back on”. Tormented with memory less, seizures and little knowledge of his surroundings, Paul was confused, weak and vulnerable. Describing this period he recalls feeling almost completely alone, “For the first 18 months I felt like a robot in a community, I knew who my family was but just didn’t have any sense of feeling towards them. I couldn’t really put any thoughts together or remember any specific experiences”. Month by month, Paul began to painstakingly piece his life back together, almost like constructing a huge jigsaw in complete darkness. “As time passed I became to realise that I was no longer the person that my family and friends knew, my identity had changed. I could no longer go out for a drink with my mates because I felt terrible the next day, I had to forget about who I was and start to make sense of the new me”. As Paul became more functionally competent he began to focus intently on the rehabilitation of his body and mind, “The doctors told me that my brain had been severely damaged and that I was lucky to be alive. I challenged myself to not let the injury stop me from living my life, It may have changed me but it wasn’t going to defeat me. I began by putting a lot of attention on my nutrition, I felt that if I could feed myself the best possible fuel then I would be able to recover quicker, ultimately your brain is an organ so if you feed it the right things you can rebuild it”. Paul started to build a diet and training plan with local PT Tom Cowen and within 18 months he managed to get himself onto the cover of Mens Health Magazine. “In the early stages I shouldn’t have really been at the gym but I found that it was the only way I could focus and channel my
PEOPLE
energy”. 12 months after the incident took place Paul managed to recruit 70 friends and family members to take part in a half marathon and fun day, which raised a mammoth £17.5k for Neurosurgical Ward 440 at Hull Royal Infirmary. “It was Easter Sunday 2012 and I didn’t want that date to be marred every year with negative thoughts so we decided to do something positive and give back to the hospital and staff as a thank you for their support and care”. Paul has since organised a further raft of fundraising events, the most most recent of which was his Marathon Challenge involving half a year of punishing training and competing. Paul describes the process saying, “You have 26 weeks to build the mileage, which can be done through either running, cycling or swimming. Week 1 can start off with a 1 mile swim, then week 2 could be a 1 mile run and a 1 mile bike-ride, you just have to keep increasing the mileage in line with the week number, culminating in the Marathon on week 26. It was extremely challenging but hugely rewarding, as I have now raised in total over £30,000 for Hull Royal Infirmary”. Paul continues to fundraise with his latest expedition taking him to Ibiza, supported by a raft of local sponsors including Neil Hudgell Solicitors, Poorboy Boutique and Al Porto Restaurant, Paul ran the full coastline of Ibiza, equivalent to completing four marathons in four consecutive days. Driven by the hunger to rebuild his body and mind, alongside giving back to the people who supported his recovery have been essential pillars in Paul’s life. He is now setting out on a new journey with his own charity PAUL to bring Positivity, Awareness, Understanding and Love to other people affected by brain injuries. “The charity is there to support and prepare victims and their families on what to expect during the recovery stage of a brain injury. PAUL is all about turning my experience into a positive and using my knowledge of what me and my family have been through, in order to support other victims and the ones close to them. If that means giving them guidance on nutrition and exercise or simply helping them to get back into work, I want the charity to be able to flex to meet the needs of its people”. Paul is now in discussions with local businesses and partners including Neil Hudgell Solicitors on how he can further progress the charity and support more local people who have suffered such life changing injuries. “We have a lot of exciting plans for PAUL with the T-shirts and merchandise now available to buy online and a number of great activities still in the pipeline for later this year”. Paul epitomises the terms spirit, hunger and resilience. Through a commitment he made to himself over 3 years ago to not let his devastating injury stop him from living his life. He has managed to not just turn his own life around but remarkably has driven mass awareness of mental health in order to selflessly aid and support others who are experiencing the destructive effects of a brain injury.
