hen you find solace in the notion that life is nothing more than an individual and evanescent journey, an elusive dream that is spontaneously consistent. You realise that joy as much as despair is not final but simply a momentary reflection, experienced continuously along the uncertain and unpredictable road of existence. By default our own supposition of reality promises instability. Acting like an emotional sea-saw we know that we could not truly comprehend what it is to be happy, if we hadn’t experienced how it felt to be sad. If we didn’t encounter obstacles or challenges then we would never know how to overcome them. Unforeseeable change is the single most powerful agent of growth and progression on the planet. After all it’s natural, it’s real, it’s you. This issue of LOCO. is dedicated to the people who don’t just watch on in shock and awe as the world moves beneath their feet. This edition showcases the individuals who believe in the power they hold not only in their hands but in their minds. They trust their vision, they believe in their dreams and even in a world bound by uncertainty they are unrelenting in their pursuit of happiness.

THE PATH OF PROGRESSION “I had many moments when I wanted to quit, but deep down I knew that was never going to be an option” PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDY HOUGHTON

The Path of Progression

I

have often found that the simple, yet unassumingly profound proverbs in life are usually those that when the time is right, resonate the most. It’s almost as if they are the world’s best known secrets, generously passed down from our seemingly happy go lucky ancestors, in order to sense check our clarity levels when we need it the most. It’s nothing revolutionary, we have heard all these worn out clichés a thousand times over, however one simple truth remains; that it doesn’t really matter if every cloud has a silver lining, whether good things will actually come to those who wait, or if there are in fact plenty more fish in the sea, but that at some point along the ever turbulent journey of life there will be a moment where these banal, tiresome old chestnuts will actually make complete sense. I pride myself on being genetically attracted to risk taking, the very thought of trying to achieve the wild unknown is nothing but an inspiring and worthwhile endeavour, however the accompanied path is one that few of us can truly endure. One of those ambitious and determined few is owner of STASH Agency, James Ash, a man who infectiously illuminates enthusiasm, positivity and success upon the very moment you tumble into his refreshingly sprightly atmosphere. I decided to meet James at the White Horse Inn in Beverley, more commonly known as ‘Nellie’s’, a place that aptly reflects exactly the type of conversation we were about to have. Blessed with character, decorated in history and glazed with an overwhelming sense of comfort that could effortlessly encapsulate you for hours, there really couldn’t be a finer setting to delve into such a colourful story. James simply gleams the ideology of fashion, not only is it evident in the way that he dresses but also in the way he moves, speaks and thinks. His application of articulation and abundance of ardour suggests that he has been doing this since the very moment he was born. However this couldn’t be further from the truth, for a story that begins at Rampton High Security Hospital the transitional composition from health worker to the fashion and events collaborator at St Stephens Shopping Centre is a product of pure determination and self belief. His initial seduction into the world of fashion and style was inspired by fellow co worker and a very good friend at a previous hospital in East Yorkshire, who had taken the leap from social care into the wholesale fashion business. “I had a great job, a progressive career path but it was just a simple matter of, if I didnt do it I would always regret it”, ultimately as a result of that ethos James’ first ever company Better Retro was formed. Armed with nothing but an impending vision and a burning desire to succeed he spent almost a year selling vintage clothing pieces via eBay, whilst all the while developing and learning the necessary skills that are required to survive in such a dynamic industry. From current trends to the business side of fashion James had quickly taken himself up

the ladder, shuffled closer to the edge of the cliff and was ready to perform a terrific swan dive of faith into that untouched prosperous lagoon of opportunity that waited before him. Without the risk then there is no real reward, James underwent a significant lifestyle change in order to pursue a new found dream yet he summarises this time of his life perfectly by saying “it’s one thing jumping in at the deep end and it’s another jumping in and not knowing how deep it actually is”. His life had shifted from an engaging job in social care and education to the confines of a small office staring at the four walls wondering what the hell he had let himself in for. Those heart sinking moments of self doubt and fear of the unknown were very much apparent upon the immediate adjustment to his new life as an ambitious entrepreneur. “It was simply down to the love and support of the people around me that kept me on the path, I had many moments when I wanted to quit, but deep down I knew that was never going to be an option”. Within eight months James had managed to build up a great portfolio of large brands in the area and was embarking upon journeys to far out places such as Delhi and Bangkok in order to source materials for his fast paced brand. The ingredients to his progression are a simple combination of networking, gut instinct and large dose of sacrifice living by the idea of “making sure enough plates are always spinning and you are always moving forward”. Although James considers progression a huge part of his life he also considers what he describes as a ‘sense check’ just as important too by saying “don’t get me wrong I am all up for flying the flag into the abyss but at the same time you can get caught up in the whirlwind of progression and not realise how far you’ve actually come. Sense checking is a good thing but it’s something that comes with experience, I try to do it more nowadays”. Flash forward three years and yet another huge change was about to take place in James’ life. With him making the difficult desicision to leave the world of vintage fashion behind, “after 3 years of working every hour under the sun, the pressure and strain finally took its toll on me and my personal life and it was time for me to take a break”. Unbeknown to James it was around this time that he in fact was looming closer to a problem much greater than a lack of self belief, changing trends or the trials and tribulations of self employment - something far more destructive was on the horizon. On the day he was given a brand new job, James learnt that the love of his life and fiancé Faith, had been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. “It was just simply the worst time of my life, cancer just takes a hold of everything and everything just stops”. It was as of this moment that all aspects of James’ life began to spiral downward, creating a real time of disarray and despair, were he was no longer fuelled by focus and drive but by the will of survival and the dedication of love.

The Path of Progression

After various episodes of intensive treatment and major surgery it was around May that Faith was told she was 99.9% Cancer free, only for it to painstakingly return in the October of that very same year and to be told it was only a matter of time. As a result James’ life was entirely flipped upside down; he was left in a property he couldn’t afford, was not career focused and after all bills had been settled, didn’t have a penny to his name. Cancer had leaked into everything, barged its way in and took completely everything, leaving nothing behind but heartbreak. I could never give this part of James’ story the justice that it truly deserves but the way in which he described this testing time of his life to me was not only incredibly upsetting but also extremely inspiring. The level of genuine honesty displayed whilst discussing such a raw topic only goes to clarify the abundance of values he represents and is a real testament to not only his character but his outlook on life. Like most great stories there is always some darkness before the dawn but fortunately some new unforeseen events and opportunities once again decided to present themselves. Before she was diagnosed, Faith had been working for Hull’s local creative company Bryce Mennell who were extremely supportive throughout her illness, not only were they extremely supportive but they also offered James a unique opportunity when he needed it the most - a chance to help out on a large ITV commercial project for St Stephens. Due to his renowned network of local creative’s and friends he had built up in the area he was back in business. “I couldn’t believe it, I finally had an opportunity to work on a project with a supportive and collaborative network and actually pay them for doing so”. This was the next chapter, the next leg of the journey and thus STASH Agency was born. James is a true survivor going from nothing to everything and doing it all over again. His current role within the St Stephens’ team is to promote the fashion side of the centre and he achieves this through various high profile events throughout the year such as Hull Fashion Week, to presenting within the St Stephens’ Style Marquee at Beverley Ladies Day. His main goal is to bring the larger community into a more style focused perspective creating opportunity and intrigue through the power of great people. With great brands in the area such as De Lacy Hair and Beauty on board it’s clear that his attitude towards achieving great things is reciprocating. De Lacy are once again working alongside James at Beverley Ladies Day and various shows throughout the year. They have also just recently been nominated the winners at this year’s English Hair and Beauty awards. With an ever expanding salon combined with 16 plus staff the local family business is going from strength to strength and to have them contributing to the fashion and style community in our area is a real privilege for all involved. St Stephens itself was also awarded the retail destination of the year last

year which only goes to reinforce that the hard work led by James and his team is completely justified. He reinforces this by stating “You don’t have to go to London to see high fashion - it’s happening right here”. During the Oscars of 2014 upon winning best actor, Matthew McConaughey gave an infamous speech in which he stated there were three things he needed in life ; one to look up to, something to look forward to and somebody to chase. It was the last of these three things that really stuck with me ‘somebody to chase’. He went on to describe that the person he needs to chase is his hero and when asked at the age of 15 who his hero was, he simply replied that it was in fact him in 10 years time. 10 years passes the same person asks him again “so are you your hero yet?” He replies “not even close, my hero is me when I’m 35”. The point McConaughey made was that he will never be his hero, he knows that he will never attain that, but that’s okay because that gives him somebody to simply keep on chasing. I can draw a great parallel to that with James’ story. He is a man of journey with a heart as big as his goals. Through the appreciation of failure combined with his lust for adventure he takes all of his experiences forward in order to carve and mould a brighter future for himself and those around him. I don’t think this article wouldn’t be true to his nature if we didn’t provide an insight into the next part of the James Ash story. The time to place on a different hat has once again arrived and the oriental hemisphere is in his sights, Thailand is his next destination and he will be permanently relocating himself there for the foreseeable future. James capped off the interview by saying “I am really proud of what I achieved in Hull and I will definitely be back over for future events, whatever business I do over in Thailand I will always be under the STASH name. It means a lot to me as it was the original dream plus I will always keep the logo as Faith designed it and it’s important to me that I keep flying that flag”. It was a real pleasure to sit and spend some quality time and learn about the journey James has been on. The way he structures his method of output is nothing short of inspiring, it’s almost as though he has a genuine talent for finding great people. He is a living and breathing reminder that clouds actually do have silver linings, that good things do come to those who wait and that life is a testing but beautiful journey. The great work he has done at St Stephens and with STASH Agency is a real stepping stone towards the further development of the city. Not only has he laid the foundations but he is also really proud of what he has achieved at the centre and feels blessed to able to come back and continue the great work he has such a huge passion for. I wish James all the very best for the future and to never stop chasing his hero.

The Essence of You “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment” Individuality was the seed that led to the blossoming and extremely successful career of one of the greatest designers of the modern era, Vivienne Westwood. However It wasn’t until Vivienne met her second partner, Malcolm Mclaren, an art student and future manager of the Sex Pistols that she discovered the freedom that lay within art and fashion. By the mid 1970’s her boutique was selling a vast array of punk-themed clothing with her designs dressing the Sex Pistols. Even as the Punk movement faded, Westwood continued undeterred in the face of changing cultural trends, developing collections that included frilly pirate shirts, along with other extravagant and drastic attire. Fast forward to the present day and she remains one of the most daring designers in the industry. Believing wholeheartedly that at its core fashion is nothing more than storytelling. Whilst she asserts that the expression of your views and beliefs should extend well beyond the realms of just cotton and thread, your appearance should consistently bare absolutely all of your personality. Crystalised in a quote during a revealing shoot with photographer Jeurgan Teller for a German fashion magazine, she stated “Fashion is about eventually being naked”. The public image of Vivienne Westwood is one of a rebellious, confident and bizarre personality, who intentionally sets out to defy convention. And yet if you are willing to delve deeper to truly understand and appreciate her story, you begin to realise that the true beauty of this iconic redhead designer is not in what she is creating but who she is being, herself. And that in my eyes is her greatest ever achievement. On visiting the Pure Fashion Show at London Olympia earlier this month I had the opportunity to see the industry of image through a very different lens. Standing at the back of the bustling crowd, I recall how countless models took to the catwalk in commencement

of their regimental march, whilst an enchanted audience frantically reached for their tablets and smartphones, thrusting them into the sky, creating a skyline of trembling towers, each supporting a glowing beacon of glorification. This endless mirroring and instant replication of imagery only goes to prove the ever increasing and some might say frightening power that technology holds over fashion, style and appearance. Within seconds bloggers, journalists and critics had uploaded their multi filtered shots to social networks, ready for mass digital consumption. Lighting the touch paper and watching on as they await their collection of hashtags to perform digital magic tricks in the ether of cyberspace. This explosion of instantly digestible media brings with it a pool of opportunities and challenges for the people and brands operating within the associated industries, particularly at a local level where brands small and large have the potential to appear in a scrolling news feeds alongside global juggernauts such as Chanel, Cara Delavigne and Rolex. The truth is that the creative landscape has changed dramatically in the last few decades and is now a very different platform to the one that Vivienne Westwood adorned 40 years ago. Exclusivity has become unlimited, distinction has become blurred, individuality suppressed, and yet depending on your perspective this could well herald a new era of opportunity or oppression. As the global hammer of conformity breaks open the playing field of competition with one swift double tap, the question is how do you continue to remain true to yourself and your values in a world trying to make you into something else. We speak to four very different brands heavily involved in the industry of image, on their pillars of success and how they plan to remain at the forefront of their individual markets even in the face of ever-changing social trends and dynamics.

THE ESSENCE OF YOU

s the focal point of our ‘Essence of You’ feature we did a unique photo shoot with Mary-Ann Cunningham current Miss Hull & District 2015 at Hatfields Jaguar on Priory Park in Hull. Jaguar has long been one of the most prestigious and beautiful global car brands in the world and Hatfields has become one of the most revered local delivery partners, with nearly 100 years in the motor trade. In addition partnering with Hugh Rice and Ballgown Divas, the shoot brought together a selection of the most stylish brands in the area to create a visual representation of the class, heritage and glamour that is thriving across our county. A 19 year old beauty queen who is striving to build a brand in the world of commercial modelling and fashion, Mary Ann shares with us how she stays focused on her path to success despite the knock-backs and fierce criticism that exists in such a competitive and cut throat industry.

You won Miss Hull & District 2015 earlier this year, beating another 16 finalists in the process. How did it feel to be crowned the winner and what has life been like for you since?

“It was a crazy evening, I never expected win. There were so many beautiful and amazing girls in the final and it just was a massive shock for me that I had actually won. I remember being on stage and feeling completely frozen when they said my name, the whole night was a whirlwind but one that I will remember for a long time. Since winning I have been involved in a number of great commercial and charity events such as starting the Hull 10K with Tommy Coyle and presenting Lorraine’s High Street Fashion with Mark Heyes. I can’t wait for what the future holds by continuing to work with more local brands and groups in the area, as well as competing at the Miss England Finals in August to hopefully bring the crown back to Hull”.

How did you get involved in the world of beauty pageants and what gave you the confidence to start competing at such a young age? “I have always loved the glitz and glamour of fashion. As a little girl I was always dressing up and putting on makeup and knew I wanted to be involved in beauty at some level. I have now done pageants for nearly two years and my confidence has grown each time. At first it was difficult because I was really shy growing up and the thought of standing in front of a crowd of people would make me shiver with nerves. Then one day I just decided that if I really wanted to achieve something then I would have to face my fear and even though it was daunting I stepped out of my comfort zone and never looked back. I feel that it has really benefitted me as a person because I’m so much more confident now and have done and achieved things I never thought would be possible”.

What else can you do to stand out in an industry that is perceived to be driven purely by image? “The truth is pageants are no longer just about appearance, you really do have to offer much more. One of my biggest learnings over the past two years is that beauty isn’t just skin deep and I actually get more motivated now by doing charity work and fundraising. Whilst people still believe that beauty pageants are just glorifying image and picking the prettiest girl that view is quickly becoming outdated. There are now rounds based on talent, fitness, eco and charity which means the winners have to be well rounded in all areas. For Miss Hull I managed to raise upwards of £3,000 for charity through a fashion show I held and i’m sure that was an important factor in me winning the overall competition”.

What plans do you have going forward in pageants and is it something you will be doing for the foreseeable future? “I’m not sure at this stage to be honest, I have the Miss England Finals in August which I’m targeting and that really would be the pinnacle for me. It is obviously a national platform to showcase by talents, fitness and charity work so i’ve been doing as much as I can in the lead up, I’ve been in the gym four to five times a week and doing as much promotional work as possible for local charities and businesses. The key is to keep busy because you never know what opportunities will present themselves. I’m very focused on fashion at the moment with the launch of my online boutique ‘Fancy That’ and I hope that the experience I have gained and the people I have met will benefit me in developing the store over the next few years. Equally modelling remains a key focus for me in the immediate future so i’m always looking for the right opportunities to build my portfolio and grow my network”.

Do you have a role model and what would your advice be to other young girls wanting to succeed in fashion and beauty? “I wouldn’t say that I have ever had a role model, I have a slightly different way of looking at things. I’m passionate about becoming the best I can be because I don’t think it is healthy to try and focus your life around becoming like somebody else. Don’t get me wrong I’ve always admired other girls strengths, particularly at pageants where I have thought I would like to improve that part of me in order to become a better more rounded person but never to become somebody different. I think as long as you surround yourself with positive and inspirational people then you will always be able to develop, grow and progress. The most important piece of advice I would give is not to do anything in life to satisfy others because you will become something that you are not. Personality is what makes you beautiful and unique so let it shine and trust that it will guide you onto the right path no matter what career you decide to pursue”.

CAST YOUR VOTE TO SUPPORT BEVERLEY OPTOMETRISTS IN PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS DOUBLE Beverley optometrists Andrew and Rogers, located in the beautiful Georgian Quarter are in the frame for two prestigious awards.

Trading in the town for almost 20 years, the firm is hoping to do the double in the Association of Optometrists countrywide contest. In what is believed to be a first, Andrew and Rogers is competing in the practice of the year category and has a member of staff named in the final three of the optical assistant of the year award. The short-listing is a reflection of the independent’s continued success, said business partners Roger Smyth and Andrew Scott. “For prescription eyewear, we have both highly experienced and caring dispensers with the very latest in optical technology,” they said. “We examine everything from the shape of the face to the position of the eyes and inclination of the head to the position of the glasses on the nose to ensure our clients get exactly what they need. “And if contact lenses are preferred, we can supply the right pair, whether that’s daily disposable options or reusable lenses.” A coveted range of designer sunglasses is also available, including brands such as Oakley, Calvin Klein and Ray-Ban which not only look good but protect the sight too. Andrew and Rogers’s luxurious premises are a well-known fixture in North

Bar Within, part of Beverley’s Georgian quarter. The business carried out a complete renovation of the historic building on relocating there from elsewhere in the town in 2013, helping to maintain it for the community. And with countless loyal clients, Andrew and Rogers is now encouraging people to vote in the awards online to help bring them back to Beverley. Chair of the judging panel, optometrist David Shannon, said: “Preparing a shortlist for these awards is difficult as the competition is high. “As a judge, I never cease to be amazed by the extraordinary quality of most of the entrants.” Voting closes at midnight on September 20. The winners will be revealed at a special black tie gala dinner and ceremony during the National Optical Conference on November 5. PEOPLE

EMBRACE THE MOMENT

A

s the year of 2017 approaches at an ever increasing pace we speak with one of the city’s leading creatives, Andrew Pearson about his own story and the opportunities that the impending accolade will present for him and others, as the national spotlight arrives over our region. Andrew, originally from Beverley has seen nearly every corner of the arts scene first hand. Starting out as a budding young actor in the big city, training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he has built up a vast amount of knowledge and experience as an actor, composer and director in both theatre and film. Following a number of roles in television and a brief career in the wine industry Andrew made the decision to return to his home county to focus on a new adventure with Playwright Richard Vergette and in 2007, E52 was founded. The name according to Pearson was purely functional, based solely on the fact that they wanted it to be an ‘ensemble of divergent creative talents’ and that 52 was the number of the building where they rehearsed. Although this actually turned out to be incorrect, 52 was actually the sweet shop next door! Their ambition was to to create challenging work, be based in Hull and to showcase their productions in a variety of difference spaces, at a time when Hull Truck was the only other professional unit in the city. The success of their first few productions including ‘As We Forgive Them’ and ‘Englishman’s Home’ led to them winning multiple awards, including an Off West End award and a Manchester Evening News Theatre award. Hull based playwright Dave Windass joined the company in 2011 and penned the critically acclaimed production Euphoria, a multi location, site specific piece looking at the history of club culture. The three partners now oversee the company and are constantly looking at bringing in more emerging talent in order to grow. Following successful projects in Malcolm Scott’s office building, the team recently managed to pave the way for a new dedicated performance space at Kardomah, at which they are currently the resident theatre company. Last year E52 created ‘Witsun Weddings’ on a train from Hull to London, which led to the commissioning of ‘Toads Redux’. The premiere of which can be seen at Artlink on Princes Ave on Sat 8th and Sun 9th August. Whilst their upcoming production ‘Revolutions’, about the year 1989, the fall of Eastern Europe and the rise of rave culture in the UK can be seen at the Freedom Festival Tent on Sat 5th September and at Hull Truck from the 8th to 10th September. Another of their recent productions, ‘Devil’s Chord’ by Richard Vergette played at the Battersea Arts Centre as part of ‘A Nation’s Theatre’ project. The show featured two actor musicians in a play that explored

the fictional relationship between the leader of the women’s orchestra in Auschwitz and Hitler’s piano player. As well as focusing on further film projects such as the recent movie ID2, shot entirely in the city, in which Pearson was the project consultant, E52 are currently looking at vibrant and unusual ways to bring the stories of two local heroes to the fore within the next 12 to 18 months. Pearson says “having produced two Larkin focused projects, it will be really interesting to complete the trilogy by finding unusual and cool ways to celebrate Amy Johnson and J Arthur Rank as it is something that will really resonate with the people of Hull”. As well as thrilling live performances, theatre, film and art projects, E52 produces the twice yearly Heads Up Festival in association with the Battersea Arts Centre in London. Describing the event Andrew says, “Heads Up brings the most vibrant and cutting edge projects from around the globe, as well as nurturing and developing Hull based talent”. Andrew’s contribution to the city’s cultural progression doesn’t however lie solely in his work on or behind the stage. In 2010 he and Hull legend Dave Mays founded ‘Fruit’ a raw performance space on the now infamous Humber Street near the Hull Marina. The minimalist venue is flourishing and has become the home to a variety of live performances and exhibitions from mini food & drink festivals to live music and comedy shows, in the process attracting some of the nations top talent. According to Pearson ‘Fruit’ is a symbol of the regions growth and is proud that it is now capable of drawing in an eclectic mix of the nations top bands, musicians and live performers. Alongside his film and theatre works Pearson was also a part of the bid team for the 2017 City of Culture and feels that the doors are definitely opening because of the HCOC designation, however he makes the point that the accolade alone will not automatically transform the city. Talking passionately about the opportunity it presents, he says “we need to build these contacts and the creative possibilities in order to maximise the spotlight opportunities that 2017 will afford organisations, businesses and artists in the city. This is our big opportunity, it’s in our hands and we can’t afford to blow it”. The question most are asking is what do we need to do? Andrew is of the belief that it is really simple and at its core it is entirely about taking action, “don’t try to second guess what people want or how things will be received, the key is to remain honest, stay passionate and believe that anything is possible. One thing I have learnt over the years is to listen to the universe, if it feels right in your gut then embrace the moment and trust your instinct – lead with spirit and people will follow”. FABLES & FAIRYTALES The Spa Bridlington launched its third Musical Repertory Season in the middle of July; consisting of three weekly shows taking place in three East Riding based venues over an eight week period. There was a time when every regional theatre in the country had its repertory season; with resident performers entertaining locals and visitors with a myriad of characters in many different performances. It was how many British film actors and actresses learned their trade and grew their reputation. Repertory is just one of the pioneering approaches being taken by The Spa Bridlington; inspired by the past, it has become a talking-point locally with audience members staggered by the quality and originality of the performances being produced. Andrew Aldis, general manager of The Spa Bridlington and producer of the season said “It’s a far cry from the cheesy, seaside variety shows of the past and sets Bridlington apart from other resorts in presenting bright performances with bespoke-arrangements, a live band and talent sourced from an audition process held in London. This year’s season consists of the lead production, Fables & Fairy Tales. Set in a derelict, stately home library, the show takes the audience to both dark and comedic worlds in musical theatre style. From Pinocchio telling fibs to Strictly Cinderella, from the three pigs as maids to the newly commissioned tale of the Giant Lobster of Bridlington; the entire show is a colourful mix suitable for all ages and, without doubt, the team’s most epic creation so far. The scenes and their musical content have been individually tailored and bespoke-arranged to demonstrate and showcase the range of talent from our superb cast; which includes Andrea Miller, Sarah Francis, Cameron Leigh, lan Richardson and Dale Page.

Flash back to just a year ago, Leanne and her father Tony were still implementing the final touches to the the building just hours before the store was finally open to the public. Not only did they work right through the night but they then went on to work a full working day the very second the doors were open. As a result of their first year’s success Hunters have chosen the local charity Sport for Everyone to support for the next year (a full 12 months). The charity is run by Syliva Hood in memory of her late Son David Hood, who lost his life to Cancer. For every new for sale board that they erect in the town and surrounding villages £15 will be donated to Sylvia’s charity. So look out for our charity boards coming soon. Ultimately the ongoing success of Hunters Beverley is founded on their refreshing approach to customer service, commitment to the local area and the influence of the relentless effort implemented by Leanne and her amazing team on a daily basis, in order to reinforce the values of an already very reputable and trusted brand. We would like to congratulate Leanne and her team on the success of the first year of Hunters Beverley and hope it continues for many years to come. POCKLINGTON SCHOOL SPEECH DAY AND PRIZEGIVING Internationally-renowned concert pianist Alexandra Dariescu returned to Pocklington School to hand out prizes

and give an amusing and inspirational speech recalling her time as a pupil at the annual Speech Day and Prizegiving. Ms Dariescu, who the previous evening had given a stunning piano recital at the school, went on to share her knowledge and skills with current pupils by giving a piano masterclass, which left the young pianists determined to follow in her footsteps. Headmaster Mark Ronan said Ms Dariescu was one of many Pocklington School pupils who had gone on to make names for themselves in their chosen field. But he told current pupils and parents: “Success is more than just achieving recognition, wealth or status – it’s about how we live and how we treat others.” Outstanding pupils were recognised by subject and exam prizes, as well as awards for individual contributions across Pocklington School and the local community.
