elcome to ‘The Fashion Bible’. It sounds epic I know. This insanely stylish edition is brimming with clothing and beauty guides, trend reports and boutique reviews, to ensure you look at your best as we head into autumn/winter. Delve further and you will discover a mesmeric interview with Hull born Costume Designer and Milliner Lara Jensen, who has worked with celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran and The Rolling Stones. Elsewhere in the issue we have a lively interview with our stunning cover star Cally Jane Beech, who shares with us the real side of reality television, the power of social media and how her recent appearance on ITV’s Love Island has changed her life. The raw beauty of this season is what captivates many of us, as the trees don their vibrant hues and a cool chill creeps into the air, reminding us that a subtle change is afoot. Crimson clouds and burning red skies act as a complete contrast to the increasingly crisp and fresh mornings. It is this sensory divergence that breeds such spectacular thoughts, emotions and ideas at this time of year. It is almost like the world is in a phase of unbalanced transition, slowly but beautifully cleansing itself of its nostalgic past, to form a blank canvas of natural opportunity. It is sad to leave behind our fading memories of

Hidden Truths

I think the key is not to pigeon hole yourself as one thing or another, if an opportunity comes along then take it and see where it leads, sometimes the unexpected ones can offer the greatest rewards

Cally Jane

S

ix months ago Cally Jane Beech was working as a dental nurse in her hometown of Hull, fitting in photo-shoots for local brands around her day job and social life. Today she is a national TV personality, model and social media celebrity, who has just surpassed Robbie Williams in number of Instagram followers. This meteoric rise to fame is the result of her recent appearance on ITV’s Love Island. The show reached record viewing figures with the highest rating of any ITV programme on catch-up this year. The opportunity arose for Cally when at the time, former love interest Luis Morrison contacted her to say he would be going on the show. A phone call followed from the programme’s producers and suddenly Cally was flying out to join him and the other contestants at the plush villa on the island of Mallorca. “Me and Luis had been seeing each other before but we weren’t together at the time and he called me out of courtesy to let me know he was going on the show and we agreed that if he found love then obviously we were not meant to be. Then I got a call from ITV a week later and they offered me the chance to go on the show and to be honest I thought why the hell not, it was a great opportunity for me”. Six weeks of intense media spotlight followed as the public watched as Cally and Luis began to rekindle their romance, eventually finishing 4th in the show’s July finale. In the blink of an eye Cally Jane Beech had become a nationally recognised TV star and her life was now rapidly moving down a completely new and unforeseen path. Describing the aftermath she says, “inside the villa we had no idea how big the show was because we were totally disconnected from the outside world. It was only when we left that the producer told us about the ratings and exposure the show had received. Since then it has been a complete whirlwind and a little bit mad to be honest with people literally walking up to me in the street crying and asking crazy things like ‘will you Facetime my mum, she loves you’ I mean how can you prepare yourself for something like that?!”. I know what some people will be thinking when reading this and I can understand your preconceptions. If i’m being completely truthful I had them as well, just before meeting Cally. There is a very clearly contrived image of the stereotypical reality TV star, whose rapid rise to fame has gone to their head and they are willing to do anything and everything in order to get there and reap the rewards. It is important that I immediately dismantle and dispel this convention, as this could not be further from the truth with Cally. Meeting her for the first time you get an instant sense of her bubbly and vibrant personality and more importantly an overwhelming wave of honesty. Simply put she is exactly herself. That may sound like an obvious statement but it is a very important one because many of the people who experience this kind of instant fame, do so through the creation of a falsified personality that they believe the public will buy into. Cally was very conscious of this during the show and continues to be very aware of the industries perceived appearance in the eyes of the public, “I have seen it from both sides and it is true that there are people who try to be someone else in order to be liked, doing things to stand out and be the centre of attention, but equally there are a whole host of real and genuine people who are just being themselves. Ultimately you can only be somebody else for so long, it won’t last and you will

quickly get caught out. For me it was just about going into the Villa to see Luis, being myself and having a good time. If people like me for that then great, if they don’t then that’s just fine as well”. Whilst Cally received widespread praise for her respectable and direct approach in the show, there were murmurs from some corners about the lack of entertainment provided by her and Luis. “I know my mum had to bite her tongue a few times when people would say that I was boring to watch but in all honesty I’d rather they were saying that than saying I was offensive, disrespectful or crude. At the end of the day I want a successful and dignified career in this industry, so I’m not going to throw that away by having sex on television or getting into big arguments or fights with people for the sake of it, it’s just not worth it and plus the thought of my mum watching all of that on TV would be horrible”. Cally is signed to ITV for another 9 months following Love Island and is hopeful of increased TV opportunities in the future, alongside more high profile modelling work, “I’d love to do another show like Love Island, I met so many great people and the industry in general is so friendly and open. I’ve built some great friendships and my manager has been fantastic in helping me network and open up new opportunities”. It is clear that Cally appreciates and understands the fragility of the industry she is now involved in, saying “it can be flavour of the month, which means you can very quickly be replaced so you have to be on your toes and looking for opportunities to keep developing and moving forward. I’m currently looking at getting more involved with music, potentially having a single released towards the back end of the year. This is all pretty new to me but an area I want to explore further. I think the key is not to pigeon hole yourself as one thing or another, if an opportunity comes along then take it and see where it leads, sometimes the unexpected ones can offer the greatest rewards”. The media spotlight is not a completely new phenomenon for Cally, having taken part in a number of beauty pageants from an early age, culminating in being crowned Miss Great Britain in 2012. “When I was growing up my friends were taking part in local competitions and pageants and I thought why not give it a go. I instantly got a buzz from competing and it was a great platform to meet and network with new people, so I decided to continue right up until winning Miss GB”. Leaving the pageants behind Cally continued to do more promotional work for local brands and events, whilst continuing to work around her job as a dental nurse. “I was booking shoots in on evenings and weekends but it was starting to takeover my life and I needed to make a decision to either jump into it fully or just continue to plod along”. Fortunately the decision was taken somewhat out of Cally’s hands when the invitation came from ITV and she hasn’t looked back since. She is however keen to point out that whilst this new lifestyle certainly has its perks, it is taking time to get used to, “It has been quite daunting actually because I just don’t have a routine anymore. I used to look forward to weekends and going out with friends and now it’s just crazy, one minute I’m getting all dressed up to go out on a Monday night for an awards ceremony, then I wake up the next

“It has been a complete whirlwind and a little bit mad to be honest with people literally walking up to me in the street crying”

Cally Jane

day for a photo shoot in London, before going up to Scotland to do a PR event. You just don’t know what is coming next, which is incredibly exciting but frenetic at the same time”. The impact of this kind of lifestyle and the pressures of constantly being in the media eye, can be stressful at times for both Cally and her partner Luis. “Because we are always busy doing things and going places we tend to have a lot of attention and focus on us both individually and as a couple. This naturally puts its own type of pressures on our relationship. For example we have over 300 thousand followers on social media who watch our every move and I genuinely think some people would be devastated if we ever broke up and that naturally brings extra weight but equally it makes us work ten times harder at our relationship”. Even as her following grows and more job opportunities come her way Cally assures me that she is still very much a Hull girl at heart and even though she now resides in London with Luis, she continues to make frequent trips back home to see friends and family. When asked what the people close to her think about her new found fame, she laughs and replies “my friends think it’s hilarious, especially when people come up to me and ask for selfies. They have seen me grow up and always been there so they think it’s mad the attention that I now get. I love them though and they have all been so supportive throughout everything and don’t treat me any differently, I’m still just Cally to them”. The hype experienced by Cally doesn’t stop with people just coming up to her in the street, she tells me how she gets waves of enquiries and messages from fans about her hair, clothes and makeup. “I have people asking things like what shampoo do I use or telling me that they have done their hair like me today. It is really sweet and I make sure I respond to as many comments as possible because people are so grateful when I do and I know that if people are looking up to me and supporting me, it is important to give back”. The vast reach and accessibility of social media means that Cally has become a modern day icon for many young girls and that is something that whilst daunting for her is incredibly rewarding, “I love the fact that I’m in a position to inspire young girls but it sometimes makes me sad in a way when some say they want to be like me. It is really important that all girls are encouraged at a young age to be the best they can be, rather than wanting to become somebody else because it doesn’t matter what industry you’re in as soon as you try to be something that you aren’t you will get caught out. So whilst I appreciate the fact girls want to do their hair like me and look like me, it is important they build their own image and grow in their own direction, after all that’s what makes us all unique – the world would be a very boring place if everyone was the same”. Cally has certainly developed a signature image for herself already, with the way she slicks back her long dark hair whilst focusing her look on her crystal blue eyes. In addition standing at only 5ft 2’ she has been described by some as a ‘little porcelain doll’. Describing her image she says, “it is important in such a competitive industry that you have something that make you stand out and makes you different. It can be little things like creating a style for your hair and makeup or through the way you dress. As long as it is an honest representation of your personality there are no rights or wrongs, it is just about being the best version of you!”.

Considering my initial unwarranted preconceptions, I have to say whilst talking to Cally I developed a real respect not only for her and her grounded and optimistic approach to life but for the wider industry of reality television. Many of the people involved in it just like Cally, have built an expansive and loyal fan-base of followers, who adore them for being real people with a clear vision and a determination to succeed. The question some may ask at this point is why do the masses choose to engage with these stars in a way not seen with global musicians like Elton John, Robbie Williams or Take That. My view is simple, there is a new age of people, who are following a new breed of celebrity, in a new world of media. The public no longer want to engage purely with the esoteric and illusive celebrities that exist only in the upper echelons of global entertainment, they want to immerse themselves within a world dominated by celebrities who they can empathise with. Stars who’s lifestyles are aspirational and achievements attainable because ultimately that is within the realms of reality. The naysayers and pessimists will insist that this creates an even further gap between them and the global stars, making it more difficult than ever to stand and take that leap into the elite world of entertainment. I would dispute that by saying, the creation of opportunity at a lower level, will in turn create a higher probability of future stars at all levels. After all in a world where Justin Bieber can go from putting a few videos on YouTube in 2007 to becoming one of the planets most successful popstars, selling out stadiums around the world on his way to acquiring a net worth of over $200m, surely everybody should be encouraged and supported in following their dreams because you never know where they will lead. People like Cally are simply taking opportunities that they have carved out through the growth and increasing demands of modern day media. One where ITV now has an entire channel (ITVBe) dedicated to reality television. 21st century media is clearly being built up around an intrusive infrastructure, where platforms like Instagram and Twitter allow the general public to feel a sense of involvement, a real life connection and an emotional insight into celebrities daily lives. If this creates inspiration, motivation and consequent opportunity for the masses to improve themselves and live in an honest and positive way, then who are we to dispute it. Cally is one of the most grounded people I have ever met, she is not getting caught up in the immediacy of fame, she is very aware that she is on a crest of a wave and that in order to maintain it she needs to continue to explore and try new things because who knows where it could potentially lead. Outlining her ambitions she says “It’s really simple for me, I just want to be the best I can be. I want to come across as a genuine, respectful and classy girl who knows where she comes from and is willing to put the work in to build a successful and respected career. Hopefully that will inspire other girls to never settle but always challenge themselves to improve and follow their passions – nobody should ever be criticised for chasing their dreams”. With that statement Cally tees up my final question, What is your dream? She smiles and says, “to be successful for who I am”.

“It can be very flavour of the month, which means you can very quickly be replaced so you have to be on your toes”

OBESSIVE Lara Jensen

Hull born fashion & style icon tells us all about the compulsive nature of artstic creation, the imperative importance of individuality and the art of following your heart

CREATIVE OBSESSIVE

LARA JENSEN LARA JENSEN LOOK BOOK PHOTOGRAPHY PHILLIP MEECH

L

ara Jensen is an extremely talented and wildly successful milliner and costume designer. Publicly exhibiting artworks from the age of twelve, it’s clear to see that there’s very little she hasn’t turned her talented hands to. From working with some of the world’s most recognisable names such as Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld, it’s truly amazing to acknowledge that her inevitable rise through the exciting world of fashion and film was born from humble beginnings right here in the city of Hull. Daughter to both a physicist and a budding artist Lara’s introduction to the wonders of both fashion and art was a simple yet highly infectious initiation. From a really early age Lara’s unique flare for artistic exploration was instantaneously evident; whether it was selecting her favourite piece from the local Sailor’s Society charity shop or hand crafting small models out of clay, being inventive was a huge part of her childhood. On reflection of her time growing up Lara says, “I think that when you come from a background where you don’t have much money or toys, you just become far more imaginative with the things that you have around you”. By the time secondary school had come around Lara’s artistic focus was primarily on fine art, a passion which successfully took her through the foundation courses of Hull College and ultimately rewarded her with a degree in the subject whilst attending Leeds University. As a self professed ‘art nerd’ the majority of Lara’s free time whilst in the educational system was spent working on new ideas, honing her incredible craft and perfecting her natural talent. “I literally don’t think there’s a day gone by where I haven’t

drawn anything”. Although a degree in fine art was an incredible achievement, unfortunately it still wasn’t enough to propel Lara into an industry she was so clearly destined to be a part of. As a result Lara ended up working as a waitress in a local Frankie & Benny’s restaurant whilst all the while saving the majority her money earned to make trips down to London in order to intern and gain work experience on various films, fashion shoots and anything she could get involved with. By consistently offering her skills in exchange for experience on various artistic projects going on in the capital it was only a matter of passion, time and persistence before a truly worthwhile opportunity would unexpectedly present itself, and of course it did, but this time it was in the form of the prestigious London College of Fashion. It had proved that the time Lara had given to interning was time well spent. Not only had she gained a plethora of experience but had also made a variety of great friends throughout the industry. It was due to a regular lunch meeting with one of these friends that proved to be that stroke of luck Lara so deservedly required. It just so happened to be that whilst waiting for her friend to arrive Lara decided to kill the time by doing what she does best - drawing and a tutor from London College saw her work and asked what course she was taking and for her to bring her more of her work. This momentary act of chance then resulted in Lara achieving a scholarship for the infamous college and thus was the first step of the journey towards the extremely well respected designer and milliner Lara is today. “I will always be thankful for the lady who Issue 008 | LOCO | 19

CREATIVE OBSESSIVE spotted my work that day as she was the person that spotted me and pushed me to reach my potential.”. Whilst attending the London College of Fashion it was there where Lara’s love for millinery and costume design really blossomed. “I just absolutely love making costumes, it offers something a little more than fine art, something three dimensional”. The college acted as an outlet to effectively validate her artistic licence, the opportunity to learn new skills and was a real melting pot of inspiration. During her time at the college Lara spent a lot of time once again interning for various designers and quickly built up an innovative reputation amongst fellow creative’s within the industry. Lara eventually graduated at the time of the recent recession and recalls how difficult it was to gain employment in any line of work not just the all ready extremely competitive fashion industry but yet again due to her instinctively creative nature and pure passion for her craft she spent this time offering to create pieces free of charge in order to stay connected and pursue her dream. Lara recalls this time of her life by saying “I just offered my services out in exchange for the costs of the materials. All I really asked for in return was that when they eventually get a budget, for them to remember me. At the time all the designers involved in big collections were making relatively safe clothing, the industry was crying out for bold interesting concepts and those ideas that truly make a great photographic editorial. Thankfully I felt like I could provide those”. The fashion industry is renowned as a cut throat and ever expanding maze. With the world becoming a significantly more style conscious environment the desire to be part of such a beautiful monster is forever on the increase, from Kanye West’s loud and proud yeezy collection to David Beckham’s’ underpants empire it’s almost as if the entry criteria has completely warped out of shape due to the nature of the numbers that simply want to be involved. With that firmly embedded in mind I asked Lara how she remains successful in such a fast paced industry. “There are always obstacles when pursuing your creative passions, whether that be financially, creatively or simply opportunity but you

learn very quickly in fashion that you cannot be bound by the obstacles that lay ahead. If I had done that I would never have got to where I am today”. Even as a young student Lara was discouraged by tutors and friends alike that pursuing a creative occupation in a place such as London would be next to impossible. However it wasn’t just due to her talent alone that landed Lara in her now privileged position but the admirable combination of risk, determination and persistence that ultimately has led her to reap the rewards of her passions. Lara Jensen’s curriculum vitae is a story that simply speaks for itself, her list of achievements and client base is nothing but an honest reflection of her ability and mentality as a creative icon. One of her most memorable moments was the Commonwealth games in which Lara designed the full head pieces for Kylie Mingoue’s performance in the closing ceremony and as a result was plastered across newspapers and magazines across the entire world. It doesn’t get much better than that. Overall I feel as though Lara is a true embodiment of creativity by simply pursuing what she loves, driven by nothing but the innate impulse to create, inspire and improve. Her understanding and appreciation of reciprocation is something that has heavily influenced not only her career but the choices she makes on a daily basis and it’s a true pleasure to chat with someone who practices that ethos every day. To round the interview off I asked Lara if she was exactly where she wanted to be and she responded with “I have always had an open attitude to life, with no real anticipation of when or where I am going but what I do know is that if you work hard at something you love you will naturally fall into something that you are good at. For me that was the creation of things, I need to create, without creating I am like a dancer with no legs or a butterfly with no wings. I’m in fashion because it’s a mode of expression and like me is an industry that embraces change all the time. I am where I am and I’m happy. If I died today I would have no regrets because I have taken every opportunity that’s come my way and I think that’s all you can ever do in life.”.

HAND CRAFTED Placing originality and quality at the heart of their brand. Oresome Jewellery are at the forefront of stand out style.

he business of creating hand crafted jewellery is one that is admired and appreciated but not widely recognised or understood. In an arena dominated by mass produced brands with immense ad campaigns and vast product ranges, truly authentic and original pieces can often be lost in the noise and bright lights of this vibrant industry. Its heritage however is embedded in our way of life and yet its prominence has slowly dwindled over the last few decades, as the global high street brands continue to flood the market with fast fashion alternatives. The truth is creative production of this kind has it’s roots embedded in both art and science and in order to create anything beautifully unique and sustainable it requires the masterful ability to harness and develop skills in both fields. Jewellery making is a trained and extremely disciplined craft that demands patience, skill and bucket loads of imagination. As part of our Fashion Bible feature we visit Oresome jewellery located on Humber street at Hull Marina to discuss the raw art of jewellery production and how the team at the gallery plan to put the lost craft back at the forefront of modern day style. Oresome Jewellery is the brainchild of Nicola Chapman and Victoria Prince, trained jewellers and silversmiths originally from Hull who have studied and honed their skills in Sheffield and Birmingham respectively, before returning Issue 008 | LOCO | 32

to their hometown, merging their talents and creating a specialist gallery and workshop dedicated to producing unique hand crafted contemporary jewellery. Nicola describes the Oresome approach saying, “We are both extremely passionate about producing beautiful bespoke creations that are more than just accessories. We have seen every angle of the industry first hand, working in design and production for both small and large brands. Oresome is about bringing together those experiences and forging a new path dedicated to educating people on the benefits of bespoke jewellery, whilst continuing to produce our own ranges along with commissions and restorations”. Education is clearly a major pillar of the business and as Victoria explains, it is essential in creating greater awareness of the skills, dedication and fun that goes into fine jewellery making, “Few people realise the time and commitment required to produce a specialist piece but equally how rewarding it can be. We start by photographing and researching, before sketching our ideas the same way any artist would. Then we build our design and structural requirements before commencing with the physical production, it is like creating a work of art completely from scratch. It can take weeks or months to produce a specialist piece of jewellery but at the end the customer knows they are obtaining a truly unique and quality piece, that will last a lifetime”. To further promote

Nicola Chapman of Oresome Jewellery during a private workshop

this theme the gallery offers an entirely transparent view of the workshop, allowing potential customers and passers by to peer in and see the ladies designing and crafting first hand. Victoria describes the concept saying, “We have the panoramic view of the workshop so that people can see the raw nature of the trade and this is what the brand is all about, appreciating the skill and hard work that goes into producing a piece of jewellery and that ultimately it’s all about creating and having fun at the same time. We even hold frequent workshops for local schools, colleges and private parties as a way to promote the fulfilment and enjoyment that jewellery making represents”. Whilst the creative output is clearly rewarding for the pair, they still face a very challenging market from a business perspective, due to the dynamic and fast paced nature of jewellery trends. Nicola describes the obstacles facing them and other brands in the industry saying “I think the originality has faded away, people tend to want the same as everybody else which is a real shame, if one person sees their friend wearing a particular brand they tend to copy. We promote the ‘dare to be different’ mentality. Nobody is right or wrong, we all have individual voices and individual styles and that should be encouraged”. To further support this mindset the gallery has just released the ‘Freedom Range’ which is built around being inspired by our cultural and environmental surroundings. The range will soon be released online in line with the launch of the company’s brand new website. Whilst the creative ranges are an ongoing focus for the brand, they also have a fantastic reputation the area”. The gallery’s reputation continues to go from strength to for their one off commissions and restoration work. Victoria says “Given strength and the ladies’ are hopeful that the current redevelopment of our knowledge and experience of working with a variety or metals and the Fruit Market along with the proposed new footbridge from the city gems we often get enquiries regarding repairs, restorations or sometimes centre will further encourage more people to visit the gallery. Nicola complete redesigns, along with briefs for specialist bespoke pieces. This says “This part of the city is really on an upward curve, we had such a could for example be a family heirloom that has been passed down and great response following the recent Freedom Festival and as more focus the requirement is to breakdown the item and re-develop it into two or comes on the area ahead of 2017 we are hopeful that it will inspire three pieces for a number of grandchildren. BEAUTY

THE BEAUTY BRIEF As we approach Autumn/ Winter Alison Martin shares her tips on what is hot when the temperature drops.

C

oming into autumn/winter berry lips are what have been seen coming from the fashion week catwalks teamed with barely there eyeshadow in either browns or greys and a lick of mascara. If you don’t like going too bold with your lips try a berry lip stain or tinted lipbalm instead, even a rosy coloured lipstick will still look good this season

Healthy flushed cheeks are a must have (think of that just come inside from the cold look). I love using a cream blush this time of year as it goes on sheer, stays really well and lifts dry, tired, winter skin. Also lipgloss was used on the models at various shows at New York Fashion week, which is good news for any lipgloss fans who are looking for a little glam during the winter months.

As part of our fashion focus for this month’s issue we introduce you to our chief make up artist and the woman behind the beauty of many of our front covers, Alison Martin. When it comes to knowledge and expertise within the world of professional make up and styling few can rival the CV offered by Alison, who has now built up over 10 years of experience as a freelance hair and make up artist. Having trained at London School of Media Make-up by a BAFTA winning make-up artist Alison went on to work initially as a beauty consultant in Harrods for brands such as Bobbi Brown, Mac and Esteé Lauder. Following her time at the famous department store Alison then opted for a new path, moving into the commercial field to ply her trade, working on shoots and events for a plethora of global brands including Sainsburys, Yahoo!, Monster, Vauxhall, Lynx and O2. Alison also worked on a major music video for band Keane which was followed by a major role as Head make-up artist on Channel 5 TV series Sofias Diary. More major media opportunities followed with projects for CBS, ITV London and BBC

working on programmes such as Celebrity Wedding Planner and Restoration Homes. Alison has also partnered with an array of major print titles including Nuts, FHM, Classic Rock, Wedding Mag and our very own LOCO Magazine. Since moving back to Yorkshire Alison has taken more of a backseat in the industry and whilst she still frequently visits the capital for ad-hoc jobs she primarily focuses on media work, events and weddings in the north of the country in order to be closer to her friends and family. Describing her career to date she says, “I’ve loved every minute. I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many great people and brands. Having experienced the wonderful whirlwind of TV I knew I needed to step back a little. It is amazing to be involved in but equally becomes a bit manic and hugely time consuming travelling up and down the country. I’m happy to be back in Yorkshire and fitting my work aroundmy lifestyle now”.

DANCING THROUGH THE SHADOWS Thursday 1 October – Saturday 24 October

An in depth interview with Richard Vergette ahead of his latest production at Hull Truck Theatre What was your inspiration behind the play?

The play grew from a variety of sources. My father saw active service during the Second World War and sustained an injury that left him disabled, whilst his brother was killed. So it was very much a reality for me and in many ways I grew up in its shadow. I didn’t want to create a documentary, but a family saga with fictional characters that was set against a background of reality.

Where did the setting and characters come from?

I was born in Cleethorpes and so have always known about the role the trawlers played in the Second World War. Then early in my career I taught at a school in Hull and through a community play project became aware of the size of the impact of the war on the city and region. I have personal connections with Hull too – my mother-in-law is from Hessle Road and it was through conversations with her that I found my setting. Dancing Through the Shadows is a romance which crosses a class divide and is about two families who are both united and divided by a relationship. People from Hull identify very strongly with their locality and my characters, particularly Grace, and they grew organically from my research into specific areas. I have deliberately not shied away from expressing the brutality of war, but at the same time wanted to show that is was a shared experience and that everyone, whatever their class, just wanted to get through it and to live. The play is about Hull’s capacity for survival and renewal, which is a message with relevance today. It has the spirit of Hull at its centre.

How did you become a writer?

I came to playwriting quite late – in my mid 30s - and have worked at my writing career alongside a fulltime job as a drama teacher. I had some success in 2009 with a play called As We Forgive Them, which premiered at the 247 Theatre Festival Manchester. This was rewritten and became American Justice, which was produced in the West End in 2013. Dancing Through the Shadows began as part of a writing project called Ring Around the Humber at Hull Truck Theatre in 2011. Led by local playwright Nick Lane, four writers wrote short plays and mine was set in 1940-41. I felt there was something worth developing and in 2012 I pitched the idea of a more substantial piece to the theatre. They went for it, I worked on a draft and it’s continued to develop from there. What has it been like working with Hull Truck Theatre and Mark Babych? I am tremendously excited to be working with Mark Babych and that he’ll be directing the play. He has such a strong visual sense and style, which I think is perfect. Together we have looked at the story and characters and Mark’s insights are incredibly detailed and useful. I was also able to give the play an early outing at Hull Truck’s Grow festival in 2014, when it was given a read through by professional actors. Members of the theatre’s Act III acting group were in the audience and, as some of them had direct experience of the war and its aftermath, their feedback was also invaluable. Their seal of approval gave me the confidence that we were creating something meaningful. And finally, what do you want people to take away from the performance? It’s a play that speaks to generations. It has romance, tragedy, comedy and it’s ultimately uplifting and inspiring. It’s about the ability for human beings to survive, thrive and take care of each other. I think it’s my best work, I’m really proud of it and can’t wait to see it come alive on stage. THE ARTS

A STORY OF LOVE AND FAMILY FROM THE HEART OF THE HULL BLITZ WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION Thursday 1 October – Saturday 24 October

Tuesday to Friday £15.50, Saturday £18, Matinee £12, Concessions £3 off (excl. matinee). It’s a long way from Hessle to Hessle Road. When Tom and Sylvia meet on the dance floor in 1938 they begin a romance which crosses the class divide. Tom’s mother is horrified that her son has taken up with a girl who works in the fish house, whilst Sylvia’s brother has no time for her daft bank clerk boyfriend. That’s until the divided families are thrown together when the Second World War reaches Hull. Suddenly class means nothing and all that matters is survival. Hull Truck Theatre’s Artistic Director Mark Babych directs the premiere of Dancing Through the Shadows by local playwright Richard Vergette. The show is inspired by Richard’s own family and experiences and is a very human story from the heart of Hull. It is Part I of The Hull Trilogy – a trio of plays programmed through to Hull City of Culture 2017 which examine how the city’s past has shaped its identity and its capacity for survival and renewal. Several local performers have been cast in the production, including actress Laura Aramayo (Under the Whaleback at Hull Truck Theatre, Coronation Street) and Marc Graham (Middle Child Theatre Company). Other cast members include John Elkington (Beryl at West Yorkshire Playhouse, BBC series Our Zoo, Hollyoaks), Christine Mackie (Coronation Street, Downton Abbey) and Jim English (End of the Line Theatre Company). There will also be a community ensemble in the show made up of older members of Hull Truck Youth Theatre

and other local volunteers, who have already started rehearsals. They have been learning 1940s dance from Movement Director Jon Beney to be incorporated throughout the production. They will also play citizens of Hull affected by the Blitz. Artistic Director Mark Babych was keen to involve non-professional actors in the show after the success of a similar community chorus in his recent production of The Ladykillers. To make the show as accessible as possible the theatre are running a Pay What You Can initiative on opening night. Audiences can pay whatever they can afford for their ticket, from £1 to £15 in £1 increments. Tickets must be booked either on the Hull Truck Theatre website or by calling the Box Office. Mark Babych, Artistic Director, says: “Dancing Through The Shadows is a story inspired by the resilience and courage of the people of Hull as they lived through one of the city’s darkest periods. 95 per cent of the houses in Hull were either damaged or destroyed but the rest of the country remained largely ignorant of this – a symbol of how Hull has historically taken hit after hit but fought back with its strength of character to build a city and a future of which we are all proud.” Richard Vergette, Writer, says: “I am tremendously excited to be working with Mark Babych and that he’ll be directing the play. He has such a strong visual sense and style, which I think is perfect. Together we have looked at the story and characters and Mark’s insights are incredibly detailed and useful.” Ruth Puckering, Hull Truck Theatre’s Director of Communications, says: “We’re hoping to reduce barriers to attendance and make ourselves accessible to people who wouldn’t automatically consider coming to the theatre. This show is perfect for us to trial the Pay What You Can pricing initiative – it’s a new play about the people of Hull, for the people of Hull.” Hull Truck Theatre, 50 Ferensway, Hull, HU2 8LB 01482 323638 www.hulltruck.co.uk

BUSINESS “As a new wave of technology companies appear on Hull’s horizon so is a new style of accountants, notably in the form of 360, Chartered Accountants. The launch of their brand new app and cloud based solutions demonstrates their ongoing commitment to innovative accountancy”.

A STATEMENT of INTENT

T

echnological innovation and improvement is now more than ever one of the most important pillars in creating a vibrant society and a prosperous economy. Technology has for a long time been at the heart of industry in the UK with agriculture, engineering and mechanisation all driven forward by progressive advancements in technology. As we enter a new era of ‘digital innovation’ bound by the image of the software start-ups in silicon valley, there is a refreshing wave of creative enterprise starting to sweep across the country and nowhere is that more notable than in Hull and East Yorkshire. In fact the Humber region is now home to one of the fastest growing digital sectors outside of London with a significant focus on its development as part of the 2017 City of Culture. It is hoped that by providing specialist locations and support structures for young tech companies that it will encourage a new way of thinking by harnessing and cultivating the pipeline of innovation and talent for the benefit of the region’s ongoing future. In a new era of technological development it is imperative that all of the supporting structures of business are ready to stand up and be prepared to advance both operationally and strategically. One area that has typically trailed in the wake of revolutionary change is accountancy. The term itself resonates with images of graphs, spreadsheets and pessimistic penny pinchers. However just as a new wave of tech companies are appearing on Hull’s horizon so is a new style of accountants, notably in the form of 360, Chartered Accountants. 360, Chartered Accountants deliver commercially focused business solutions and tax advice to many new and established technology Issue 008 | LOCO | 44

companies, operating across a wide range of areas, including software development, telecoms, data hosting, console game designers, engineering, high level security applications and surveillance. The reason they are trusted with such a fast paced sector is down to their own individual embracement of technology, in the way they run their business and their consequent knowledge and awareness for other forward thinking companies. Managing Director Andy Steele describes the firm’s approach saying, “we appreciate technology is a rapid and ever changing sector with its own unique challenges. We understand the fluid nature of this competitive market and how flavour of the month in June could be yesterday’s news by September. Our offices are fully integrated with state of the art IT infrastructure, supported by a highly respected local team and technology has played a significantly important role in delivering first class service to all stakeholders of our business”. 360’s vast knowledge and experience coupled with an unparalleled offering of services provided from their new state of the art base on Albion Street, means they have a name and reputation that you can trust. This pedigree is emphasised by them recently becoming the first independent accountancy firm in the area to develop an App for smartphones. As well as tax data and tax saving tips, the app also provides easy to use GPS business mileage tracking. Over 6,000 people have now downloaded the App, which has since been developed for use on iPhone, iPad, iPod and all Android devices.
