Diluting the Darkness
F
or the past few weeks it has seemed like time has been moving at an increasingly swift and expeditious rate. October has whistled by and we are now peering into the final weeks of Autumn, with temperatures struggling to hit double figures and a growing veil of darkness reaching further into each and every day. As the nights close in November can be deemed a month of mixed feeling, either with excitement ahead of approaching holidays or as a precursor to the final denouement of the year. And yet as with many things in life, it is all a matter of perspective. This edition is consciously designed to bring you a sense of warmth and energy, through an emotional and engaging mix of features, collected and crafted to inspire and motivate you ahead of the impending winter months. It begins with a delicate interview with cover star Paul Spence, a man who defines and embodies the term inspiration. Paul’s story will warm your heart, as he eloquently shares his own struggle for inner strength, alongside the burning desire he has to support, aid and transform the lives of others in our region. Continue further and you will find a story of aspiration and actualisation, as Dan Welburn shares his challenging journey through the world of elite health and fitness. We also meet with Tommy Coyle to reflect on an up and down year for the Hull Boxer, whilst discussing his exciting and ambitious plans for the region’s next generation. Elsewhere we share our nutrition and style tips for Autumn/Winter, with our ‘Rock The Gym’ feature

aiming to keeping you looking and feeling great throughout the fall. Our Deputy Editor Beth Taylor provides the final introductions to our Health & Wellbeing edition, with a line from her expertly written cover feature, ‘Strength grows in that very moment when you begin to think you can’t go on or you can’t see your future, but you keep going anyway. You keep pushing until you begin to see the light seep through, diluting the very darkness you once feared’.

MAN ON A MISSION BY BETHANY PAIGE TAYLOR
“Hopefully I can help diminish the mental health stigma, promote communication and encourage people to have a healthy brain”

L
ife is a continuous journey of transformation, your life can take a turn almost instantaneously, but what you do with that turn is what is important. Between us, the secret is not focusing on fighting the old, but building the new; Paul Spence is a living example of this. Not been able to remember every fine detail of his past due to brain damage could have possibly had a positive impact on his new construction. Although his past was traumatic and by no means fair, Paul has been laying the foundations and building upon them everyday for the past 3 years, in order to create something spectacular. Taking on new and tougher challenges Paul has proven anything is possible. A year ago, The Paul For Brain Recovery charity was born, and has seen only success growing everyday like leaves after the fall. Raising thousands for charity Paul has conquered many marathons, triathlons and numerous other sporting events, such as Ibiza four marathons in four days. His newest mission is to open a drop in centre for people of Hull to utilise for recovery, “I’m on a mission, a man on a mission to provide a service for our city, for people out there who are lost and isolated”. Compassion oozes from Paul, wanting to help others is a gift he has obtained, and speaking to him left me with a question that I believe you should ask yourself everyday, what do I do for others? The centre is a threshold for him to gain access to the people of Hull, aiming to not exclusively cater for brain injury, but also for people suffering with mental illness. “Hopefully I can help diminish the mental health stigma, promote communication and encourage people to have a healthy brain. People are too bothered about what the outside looks like and don’t worry about the inside and their brain”. Contrary to the good old saying ‘you can’t save everyone’ Paul will certainly give it a good shot. Most people’s days are spent in a passive routine; we arrive at the same workplace five days a week and rarely deviate from this conventional path. Paul left his job as an electrician to strive at something he was passionate about, helping others. This is a courageous move, to challenge the normal ideology that is forced upon us to work a repetitive job consistently. However Paul never said it was easy for him, but then again if it were easy wouldn’t we all do it? Putting his mind and body to the ultimate test, every consciously crafted day is never the same, and the best part; it doesn’t even feel like work, he has no regrets about this leap into a new working life. Pouring his heart and soul into creating something substantially beautiful and legendary, it is slowly coming together like a radiant painting. “I’m really enjoying what I’m doing, helping others. The buzz that I am getting from meeting people makes me so happy, I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else”. This true feeling of raw inner pleasure and tranquillity is attainable once you are surrounded by happiness. Paul’s happiness is highly dependent on
his health, wellbeing and the wellbeing of others, his current mission is to improve the health and happiness of many people in the city of Hull. The definition of health can be slightly misinterpreted; it’s not merely the absence of disease, rather a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing according to the world health organisation. Paul captures all three aspects of wellbeing in his own personal life and in his charity vision, by improving physical wellbeing through incorporating fitness training into his daily life, and the lives of others. Upon the early stages of transforming his physical fitness, Paul would do 3 squats, 3 sit ups and 3 press ups at home everyday, it seems simple, but progression is key, after a few months he joined a local gym and now he is completing marathons. Fitness was an escape for Paul, it also allowed him to have more freedom and independence, “I was enjoying the gym but I had to take it slow at first because of fatigue, then I started running, which gave me my independence back, because up until that point I was asking for lifts off people, so when I was going to Castle Hill for rehab I would run home 5 miles, which was brilliant because I wasn’t asking for lifts anymore”. Paul’s fitness has gone from strength to strength, now ready to take on an Iron Man, Paul believes he couldn’t have got through his brain injury without his fitness goals, “Without a doubt I credit health and fitness for saving my life”. Fitness isn’t just about attending the gym or going for long runs, it also involves preparing your body for the physical tasks ahead, accurate nutrition is a necessity to allow the body to function efficiently, equally your body is also a vessel that carries your brain around for you. Paul passionately told me how eating the right food personally enhanced his brain recovery. “The brain is neglected so much now, all the unhealthy foods people are eating and drinking, the lack of stimulation, the brain is having it hard because people are more bothered about how they look on the outside”. These words of wisdom need to be heard, wouldn’t it be beautiful if people took more notice of what was inside, rather than the superficial exterior. Paul aims to educate the world on what foods can aid mental health. Utilising his website for food recipes that he creates every Monday at Al Porto, ensures Paul can share his knowledge accordingly and people can now make the nutritious lifestyle change that he is so kindly sharing with us. With this incredible view on nutrition, Paul informed us that he is now standing as an ambassador for PhD, with a simple goal to inspire others to make positive changes to their eating habits.

“I got through brain recovery. I am not frightened of anything anymore, I have an inner strength now, my struggle has made me stronger and it has changed my life” Paul also gets enjoyment out of his work life. “Last year me and my works friends decided to do a naked calendar for charity, we sold 300 copies and raised £3000 just in Hull”. Taking every opportunity to raise money for charity, he saw an opening. The calendar swiftly turned into a Hull Monty event, Paul and his friends performed the full Monty for Hull raising a grand sum of £5,500 for charity. The good news Ladies is that Hull Monty will be rocking again on the 12th December 2015 for a one off Christmas special. “We have all been looking forward to it and training well, the lads are always in good shape for everything we are doing they are keeping healthy all year round”. The enjoyment never stops for Paul his next goals are running the Great Wall of China, opening his walk in centre and completing an Iron man. You may be thinking this is a lot to have achieved in only three short years from one man, but behind every strong man is a strong support team of both friends and family. For most, your family link past, present and future, they are our bridges that help us get out of the water and back on land. When times are tough family will always be there to support you. Paul’s son and daughter proudly ran 10K for their father. “They know what I’m trying to do and they are supporting me, I have a daughter 17 and my son is 16, I see them every weekend”. It is clearly visible that Paul works hard, thankfully having the full support of November 2015 | LOCO | 14
his friends and family has given him the strength to achieve his goals. Strength grows in that very moment when you begin to think you can’t go on or you can’t see your future, but you keep going anyway. You keep pushing until you begin to see the light seep through, diluting the very darkness you once feared. Everyone, from all walks of life have had to recover at some point, it takes everything you have, Paul Spence recognises that his recovery has taken every ounce of strength both physical and mental. “I got through brain recovery. I am not frightened of anything anymore, I have an inner strength now, my struggle has made me stronger and it has changed my life.” Paul didn’t just stop with his own inner strength; his goal is to now transform the lives of others. I have every belief in his success, he works tirelessly, and after meeting Paul I almost felt somewhat guilty for my own diary not being as intense, almost like I wasn’t using my time efficiently. Paul’s passion to help others is completely inspiring. Paul’s transformation has not only defined his life, it has also transformed the lives of others. The Paul For Brain Recovery charity will be a home to all of his hard work. It is our job to simply support him any way we can on this incredible journey. www.paulmybrainrecovery.co.uk

Life Lessons We meet Tommy Coyle at his new academy on Geneva Way, Hull to discuss his recent fight with Luke Campbell, events in his personal life and how he is providing a platform for the city’s younger generation to promote the importance of health and education.
“I thought right then I was going to lose my dad. Boxing, training, business, everything pales into complete insignificance compared to family”
The Tommy Coyle Academy, Geneva Way Hull
F
or the last six months Tommy Coyle has been slap bang in the middle of a blinding media spotlight. Newspapers, magazines, radio and television all swarming around him as he built up to the city’s super-fight with fellow local boxer Luke Campbell. Days, weeks, months and years of training and preparation leading to what would prove to be his biggest ever battle to date and a fight that could have potentially slingshot him into world title contention. Unfortunately the night didn’t go to plan for Tommy and whilst as usual he left absolutely everything in the ring, it wasn’t quite enough to beat, in his words ‘a superior opponent’ saying, “Honestly when I looked at him I saw chocolate but he must be a good poker player because he schooled me on the night. Luke is a world class boxer and ultimately even though I gave it everything I was beaten by one of the best fighters in the country”. Tommy spent the following few weeks in an extremely difficult state of reflection, a massive blow to his career that would have finished most fighters off for good. “For the first few days after the fight I didn’t want to do anything but stay in bed but as my Dad always says ‘the only thing you will get from staying in bed is bed sores’. I got down to the stall and started helping him out for a few days and now i’m back in training again and looking forward to my next fight”. Anybody who knows Tommy Coyle, will know he is a guy who doesn’t stay down for long and this time of self reflection only resulted in a deeper and more driven mindset. Tommy says, “I remember Jonathan Elvidge doing a speech at FEO (For Entrepreneurs Only) recently and he said ‘you should look at your life like a log book of achievements and sometimes how big you fail is actually a success in itself ’ and it is so true. Back in the days when I was getting excluded from school, I could never have dreamed about fighting in front of a sell out crowd in my home city, so to do that and come close to world title contention is a massive success for me”. People will recall the interview we did with Tommy in March and to say things have changed since then would be a huge understatement. I asked Tommy if the loss to Luke was the lowest point of his year and he replied, “Not by a long way, the lowest point was when I was sat in the hospital after my dad had suffered two heart attacks and they brought me his watch up – I thought right then I was going to lose my dad. Boxing, training, business, everything pales into complete insignificance November 2015 | LOCO | 20
compared to family”. Tommy has recently welcomed a new member to the Coyle family with 4 month old son Archie and he has already set his sights on ensuring his son doesn’t make the same mistakes he did as a child. “I’m going to make sure he puts education first, the biggest lesson I have taken from boxing and life is that everything can change so quickly. In boxing it takes one punch to completely alter your career path, you need a plan B. I’ve been lucky because without boxing I wouldn’t have anything, not even a GCSE. That’s why I have set up the Academies and my Boxclever programme because education is essential. It is the foundations that everybody needs in order to build a future. If things don’t work out in sport at least you have a solid education to fall back on”. The first academy in West Hull has now become free for all kids under 17, a huge achievement for Tommy and his team, aided by the backing of local corporate sponsorship. Tommy says the next obvious phase was to bring that same level of accessibility to East Hull, “It is about widening our services to a broader group of people. We know that sport is a great way for children to focus, get fit and stay out of trouble but it costs money and parents with 2 or 3 kids can’t always afford to send their children to football, rugby, boxing etc twice a week. Thats where the academy comes in, boxing acts as the vehicle to control stress, get rid of negative energy and gain enjoyment and fitness and it gives parents some rest bite as well”. I was keen to understand from Tommy how he plans to motivate children to become more involved with education and to listen to their teachers when they clearly idolise him, a sporting icon who was expelled from school at 15. Tommy replies, “It is really simple, plan B. I remember when I was young I got the chance to meet Mike Tyson, I don’t know how but my dad managed to get me the opportunity. Mike Tyson was the baddest, most feared fighter in the world and like me he had been expelled from school at a young age for fighting. I thought it would be wise to go up to him and tell him i’d been expelled as well. When I said it to him I was expecting him to laugh but he grabbed me by the throat, looked into my eyes and said ‘kid – it is not clever to be tough but it is tough to be clever’. At the time I thought what is he on about and laughed it off but now looking back I realise exactly what he meant.
“I get a real buzz out of giving, the other day
I invited a homeless man in for dinner. My Mrs went absolutely mad at me but that’s just what I’m like”
It is never smart to be the tough kid, getting in trouble all the time and causing bother. You need to get an education and have a plan B because you never know what life will throw at you. I’ve been very lucky, to be in the right place at right time, there are better fighters out there than me who don’t do it professionally, i’m fortunate, don’t look to live like me, look to learn from me”. Tommy is clearly motivated about not just having his name in lights but in leaving a legacy for the future generation. The new facility at Sewell Studios on Geneva Way, East Hull has state of the art training equipment alongside a dedicated classroom, where the team invites down local schools for Boxclever classes. Supported by local fighter Connor Seymour, Tommy also delivers a number of fitness classes with the local schools, alongside open Boxfit classes for a variety of ages. The East Hull academy remains funded by Tommy himself at present, whilst he looks for another round of corporate sponsorship that will enable him to continue to build the foundations for the academy’s future. “We secured £40,000 per year over the next three years for West Hull, thanks to the support of six companies, Sewells, ESA, Lime Property, CHCP, CCG and Hudgell Solicitors. We need to replicate that model for East and so I’m on the lookout for any businesses who would like to support and get behind a great cause”. Tommy continues to stretch his personal network and is looking at a few business options of his own, as he is very conscious that boxing isn’t going to go on indefinitely. “I know my career won’t last forever, especially if I keep
getting knocked out so I need a plan B, I need to practice what I preach. I’m looking at a few options at the moment and trying to connect with more business people to learn from them. You only get smarter by being around smarter people, so i’m trying to do more networking and learn more about business to prepare myself for the future”. Tommy has a new member of the family to provide for with son Archie and he is well aware of the importance of prioritising everything in order to be there for him. “It is all about balance and i’m working hard at that. The other night I was coming back from training and I was going to nip into the West Academy to catch the Boxfit class but I remembered Archie goes to bed at 7:30 so if I went straight back I would get to see him whilst he was awake”. Personal and business goals remain for Tommy with him stating he wants to buy his dad a Bentley to retire in and his mum a red convertible. This is a perfect note on which to finish, despite a multitude of ups and downs in a frantic and chaotic year, at the centre of everything, Tommy Coyle simply wants to be remembered as a good guy, who had relentless desire and drive. A man who gave everything to everybody whether that was in or out of the ring, sometimes to the extent that it actually gets him in trouble. He finishes with a laugh and says, “I get a real buzz out of giving, the other day I invited a homeless man in for dinner. My Mrs went absolutely mad at me but that’s just what I’m like, I want to give back and help people out because I know it will come around and one day I will need it too”.

BELIEF IS LIMITLESS We talk to Hull bodybuilder DAN WELBURN all about his journey through the world of elite bodybuilding and how it has tested both his mental and physical strength BY BETHANY PAIGE TAYLOR
S
ome people believe that your path has previously been written for you. That you are gently guided towards your true purpose in life. Dan Welburn believes that bodybuilding found him and rightly so, crowned winner at the Nabba Universe Class 1 finals in 2014, this international accolade earned Dan his Nabba pro license and set up his future in the world of elite bodybuilding. We caught up with him this month to talk exclusively about his unrelenting motivation to achieve and how he has overcome a number of huge obstacles to succeed in such a physically and mentally demanding industry. Bodybuilding was not something Dan had always dreamed of, as a child he was a successful black belt in karate, by the age of 18 the gym was just a door that Dan walked through to become marginally fitter, stronger and bigger. Unintentionally, that door one day opened up and invited Dan into a captivating new world. Taking him on an extraordinary journey that began with him winning the NABBA novice UK in 2009, NABBA North East in 2011, Word Championship in 2012, and last but by no means least the NABBA Universe Class 1 in 2014. Alongside putting on a bodybuilding show last year and continuing to train and guide his personal training clients to achieve dramatic transformations, his path so far has seemingly been perfectly written. Nevertheless it is rare that everything is truly as perfect as it seems, no path to success is ever easy. It is the obstacles and hurdles you overcome that make you into a winner. Dan Welburn has fought a number of battles along the way, testing both his physical and mental strength. Crowned Mr. Universe of his class in October 2014, few realise the pain and despair Dan went through in order to attain this incredible achievement. Dan admirably won the title with both his rotator cuffs torn, meaning his shoulder training was almost non-existent leading up to the competition. “I was lifting lighter than the females that train with me” Dan had to find a way to overcome this injury; with a strict diet he aimed to just maintain what muscle mass he already had. After the show he made his way to the hospital to get the muscles re-attached to his shoulder, proving that persistence and belief can ultimately defeat agonising pain. Dan claims motivation and passion are two fundamental characteristics required to conquer any hurdle that life presents you. “Enjoy what you do, believe in yourself and you can achieve anything”.
Dan isn’t alone in his extreme dedication to bodybuilding; his partner Rebecca Rowley is also majorly involved in the industry and Dan believes this a great benefit for them both, as they understand each other’s lifestyles. “Rebecca gets it, especially with everything I went through in 2014 with all the pain and travel, I don’t know if I would have made it without her”. The two year couple certainly share the same passion for body building and desire for success; Rebecca Rowley was crowned Miss Yorkshire Toned in 2014 and continues to participate in regional and national events. Dan is also quick to note that he has achieved his biggest goals with his girlfriend Rebecca by his side. Rebecca goes over and beyond to support Dan, cooking and preparing all Dan’s meals alongside doing her own training. “We support each other the most when we are competing, she does all my cooking for me and when it gets down to all the tough bits the last 4 weeks when most people quit or it backfires, she makes me feel as comfortable as possible, she knows there is no point in talking to me cause she knows there is no soul left in me, it’s all gone”. Bodybuilding is clearly a 24-hour job, consisting of eating all the correct food at the correct times, alongside training 7 days a week. The mental strength and dedication from Dan and Rebecca is admirable. As always, everything in life needs to have balance, with motivation comes demotivation, Dan has at times felt disheartened by the publics dystopian view on him, “People say I’m intimidating all the time and that is the last thing that I want” The stereotype that bodybuilding carries is a hard one to challenge. During the interview I never once felt intimidated by Dan, he was very down to earth and light hearted, for people to say that Dan is intimidating in my opinion this is a very distorted view, but maybe it is down to people seeing his imposing physique and believing this mirrors his personality and yet this couldn’t be further from the truth. The public’s judgement of Dan appears to have taken its toll on him in the past, “I don’t like the way people stare at me in the street, I like to just keep my jacket on, but when I am in the gym my jacket is happily off, I guess that is just part of the industry I am in”. It is a shame that Dan can’t feel the same sense of pride in the street as he does in the gym, it is possible that the simple lack of knowledge and talk around bodybuilding means it remains hidden and therefore people don’t understand all the hard work, sacrifice and dedication that has been put into achieving such a large and sculpted physique.

Many consider bodybuilders to take health and fitness too far, striving for unsustainable and dangerously extreme goals. But bodybuilding is not a fashion trend, it’s Dan’s job, it’s his passion, it’s his life. The goal for Dan is simple, to be the absolute best at what he does and that is to have the biggest, most symmetrical muscles in the world. Even after all of the judgement and negative comments Dan has received in the past, he still manages to get up and work hard everyday through his unrelenting drive to win. Also having a girlfriend to share that with is enchanting, they motivate each other through sheer mental strength “she is tough, that is one of the things I found attractive about her, she is mentally very tough, she doesn’t give up, ever. If she has a challenge ahead she will do whatever it takes to get through”. This strength between the both of them is infectious, showing not only each other, but also other people, that with strength and support anything is achievable. Not only is bodybuilding Dan and Rebecca’s sport and passion, it is also their lively hood. Dan is the proud owner of Muscle Honeyz, a female only bodybuilding business with Rebecca working beside him. Personal training the average woman whilst guiding and supporting female bodybuilders is a selfless act for the couple, sharing all of their experience and knowledge with others in order to help them achieve their goals. A structure that has already bred fantastic success, Dan says “I have had a couple of British title wins with girls already, Rebecca teaches them how to pose whilst helping with the psychological side of training and I focus on the core nutrition and exercise programmes”. Training the girls from ‘Work Out’ Gym in Hull, Dan considers the group to be a tight nit and cohesive family. Dan believes working with girls is so much easier than with guys “we train women only because they are much easier to work with, men are a total nightmare because of ego and arrogance”.

Almost a year on from his Mr universe success Dan is looking ahead to host another bodybuilding show on May 1st 2016. After the huge success of this years show which a plethora of local and regional bodybuilders attended, Dan aims to create the rebirth of Hull’s bodybuilding scene. “I put on Mr and Miss Hull this year because the last one was in 1997 and then it shut down and I felt this show needed to return for the east coast to show what it has to offer. It was just before Mr Universe that we decided to bring it back, so I put the show on and gave it a big push and we got a great response from it and we will be doing it again next year”. Dan is constantly looking ahead for new challenges and goals; I have the upmost respect for Dan’s dedication and energy placed into the world of bodybuilding. The time and gruelling effort spent on sculpting his physique is something Dan should be immensely proud of. With more awareness and publicity of the sport, hopefully judgement should decrease, no longer should Dan have to cover up his work of art in the street, because success is no accident, it doesn’t just fall into your path, it still requires sacrifice, hard work and most of all a strong heart.

WELLBEING
GOING UNDER THE KNIFE TO CREATE A NEW YOU? Beware of the dangers and do your research on your surgeon
N
ot so long ago, it was considered to be the extreme – the sort of thing only the rich and famous could afford. But cosmetic surgery is now becoming the norm, even being increasingly bought as birthday and Christmas gifts in recent years. According to latest statistics, cosmetic operations were up by 32 per cent last year. Women still accounted for more than 90 per cent of procedures, but male patient numbers more than doubled. It is estimated that there are around 75,000 cosmetic operations a year in the UK, with another 50,000 non-surgical procedures such as Botox. By the end of last year, the British market had been valued at more than £250m. However, many fail to realise the law allows any qualified doctor to perform cosmetic surgery without undertaking further training, or gaining additional qualifications, for specific procedures. And with money clearly to be made, many procedures are being carried out by people with little experience. Hayley Collinson, a specialist in handling cases of sub-standard cosmetic surgery at medical negligence specialists Hudgell Solicitors, said: “Given the number of celebrities we see on television talking about their latest ‘nip and tuck’ procedure, it’s hardly surprising that many people have perhaps become too comfortable with the thought of going under the knife, and the dangers involved. “As experts in handling medical negligence compensation cases, we see too many instances where people have failed to do their research before going under the knife. “The Royal College of Surgeons is working on new certification protocols to be introduced in 2016, which will identify those surgeons who have the appropriate skills and experience to provide cosmetic surgery, and that is to be welcomed. “But until then, anybody considering cosmetic surgery should do their research and ask how many times a
surgeon has carried out the relevant surgery in the past year, how many patients have made complaints, and how many occasions they have had to carry out revised surgery to repair or change surgery they completed. “These are all very relevant questions for a patient to ask, as not only will it give information about what to expect, but will also provide a chance to gauge the professionalism, knowledge and level of care of the surgeon.” If you have undergone any cosmetic surgery which you feel was sub-standard or negligent, our team at Hudgell Solicitors can advise with complete discretion and care, during what may be a difficult time. FITNESS
Supplementing Success
Jamie Dean & Chris Brodie from Monster Supplements give their opinion on optimising training through the support of supplementation
Jamie Dean - Athlete
Chris Brodie – Elite Athlete
What were your training goals? To build muscle and to burn body fat! I wanted to have an athletic physique, carrying some muscle whilst being lean (not shredded!). To build the required amount of muscle I had to train like a bodybuilder. This required a lot of weight training, mixing rep ranges and switching between compound and isolation exercises; followed by the introduction of cardio towards the end of my transformation. My workouts would vary every 3-4 weeks. Training using these methods allowed me to achieve my goals within a relatively short period of time as my complete transformation took about 12 weeks.
What are your training goals? My main long term goal at the moment is to be stage ready for next year to compete in the WBFF. However to make sure I bring a ‘complete physique’ I have monthly targets working back from the competition. My current goals revolve around filling out any gaps in my physique to make sure I have a balanced, well-proportioned and symmetrical shape for when I diet down in early 2016. Every day I get a little bit closer, improve a little more and dial into what I want the finished product to look like.
What supplements did you use for this transformation? Whey protein; PhD Diet Whey 3.5kg (2 scoops). Helps build and repair lean muscle. BCAA’s (Branch Chained Amino Acids); PhD BCAA 2:1:1 195 caps. Aids muscle growth and recovery around training times Post workout carbs; Optimum Nutrition Glyco Maize 2kg (1 scoop mixed with whey). Intermediate/fast carbohydrate source used to optimise recovery. Tip: don’t be afraid to use high carbs pre, intra and post-workout as they can help transport protein to your muscles more effectively! Pre-workout; Grenade .50 calibre, 50 servings Killa Cola flavour. Gives one a much needed kick up the behind before a gruelling workout! Following your transformation and your knowledge of the industry what is your ultimate piece of advice? People’s biggest mistakes are that they want everything now! Not in the light of aspiration, but in greed and impatience. Take your time, always be one step ahead with your meal preparation. Plan your workouts and invest in the right people like I did with my plan for Josh Beet. If you surround yourself with people who are more knowledgeable, their influence will eventually rub off on you and that will encourage you to take good advice and apply it practically. November 2015 | LOCO | 32
What supplements do you use? As far as supplements I stick to what I know is proven to yield results. So a monthly shop will consist of Isolate and casein protein, ground oats, vitargo, multi-vitamins & mineral and BCAA’s. These are the things I deem necessary and form the base of my supplement stack. From time to time you will find I do use a pre-workout too, provided by my sponsor ADAPT NUTRITION, their Pre-Train helps dig me out of those dark days to ensure I always have a great workout. How does the preparation and supplementation change between an athlete and the average gym goer? Athletes you will find are very routine with their supplements and they won’t change from month to month, you will also find they will find a brand they like and that works for them and stick to it. We know what our bodies need and fill in the gaps in our nutrition perfectly. The average gym goer tends to change products month to month as well as brands as they try out the different products on the market. It can be a bit of a hit or miss game for them and was for me when I started out, back then supplement retailers didn’t offer the wealth of knowledge as part of customer service as they do today, with experts and athletes at the end of the phone. ROCK THE GYM [HULL BLOGGERS]
We talk to Jenny Barrett of Curious Alice all about how looking good on the outside can hugely impact how you feel on the inside For me, looking good on the outside can hugely impact how you feel on the inside, and if you feel good that’s bound to impact on the quality of what you do. And there’s nowhere else that we all need to have the drive to dig deep and produce the best results possible than when we’re working out. With the increase of sports and activewear being produced by some of the UK’s most popular fashion brands, it’s obvious that there is a demand to look hot whilst working up a sweat. In both the fashion and beauty industries there are some great items that can help you look good before and during your workout to get your fitness mojo working, here are some of my faves...
HERSCHEL SUPPLY CO SETTLEMENT BACKPACK
COCONUT SHIMMER BODY BUTTER
BOOHOO AIMEE WASN’T BUILT SLOGAN SPORTS VEST
£55.00
£14.00
£10.00
Who says carrying your essentials to the gym shouldn’t be on point too?? This backpack is super chic (that’s right; I said chic and backpack in the same sentence!) with the subtle snakeskin print and is a good size to fit in everything you’ll need to work out. It’s also really handy if your exercise of choice is walking or running as it won’t get in your way...exercise on your way to the office and still look fierce.
NIKE AIR MAX THEA
I’m a big fan of the slogan tee, and having a mantra dedicated to Queen Bey on my chest whilst trying to get my sexy back is a pretty darn good motivator!
COCOA BROWN TOUGH STUFF 3 IN 1 BODY SCRUB
We all joke that we glow rather than sweat during exercise, but with this you can put some actual shimmer in your shimmy! Better still, the coconut smell will make you think warm and sunny thoughts. After all, summer bodies are made in winter right?
GOSH LONG LASTING BROW PEN £6.49
£84.99
I’m definitely a make-up free girl when exercising, but I always feel good when my brows are done. Using a pen rather than pencil may hold a little better when you start working up a sweat as it acts as more of a stain, as in stay-in put!
ROCK ON RUBY GYM HEAD BAND £4.99 £5.99 I’ve been completely obsessed with these since picking up a pair in the States this summer ridiculously comfy, very practical, and also look great as part of an off duty outfit day to day. Fashion, function, fab.
This one of my best discoveries EVER. I’ve never known anything make skin so soft! This makes it a great pre (or even post) workout scrub to keep you feeling fresh and ready to get your fitness ‘oooon.
One of my favourite brands for creating cute and quirky slogan clothing, including their very own #RockTheGym fitness range. I adore these bands for keeping hair off my face when working out (and also applying make up). Pick your own colour and slogan to get your motivation working when you need it most. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
ADVERTORIAL
TASTE TRANSFORMED Situated in the redeveloped NFU building, Rumi’s Indian Restaurant offers a new stylish and contemporary dining experience, overlooking some of Beverley’s most beautiful, iconic and historic landmarks
D
ining out has changed. We no longer go out simply to eat, drink and be merry. Whilst the quality of the cuisine remains key, spending our hard earned cash has become much more difficult, especially in an area like Beverley where restaurants are in the plenty, all offering a variety of good food at affordable prices. For any new restaurant to survive and thrive in this competitive market town there is a requirement to do something different. To look at the area with fresh eyes and add a dash of excitement and sparkle in order to transform opinion and more importantly drive customer loyalty. Transformation has become a buzz word for this thriving market town, with the new Flemingate retail development on the brink of opening its doors to the public after years of planning. Bringing a cinema, hotel and raft of national retailers to the area such as Debenhams and H&M. In addition the new East Riding College facility is drawing in even more young and ambitious students, whilst further developments to the transport network and housing infrastructure continue to ensure Beverley leads the county November 2015 | LOCO | 38
into the 21st Century through a balance of heritage and purpose. One notable landmark that has seen bricks and mortar evolve around it is the old National Farmers Union building on Walkergate, which was sited next to the historic Cattle Market (Now Tesco Superstore) for over a century. The unit had been derelict for 7 years when in 2014 plans were submitted by Rumi’s to transform the building into a top floor Indian Restaurant with a one floor shopping unit below. After nearly 18 months of complete redevelopment this stunning new eatery opened it’s doors to the public on the 25th of August offering a refreshingly new alternative for couples, families and friends to eat out in style. Ironically sat in one of the town’s most modern restaurants you overlook through floor to ceiling panoramic windows St Mary’s Church and the iconic White Horse Inn, two of Beverley’s most treasured and historical landmarks. It is like you are peering through a looking glass into the town’s past from a place of contrasting modernity.
FOOD & DRINK
The restaurant itself resembles this contemporary and minimalist feel with clean and stylish décor made up of dark wooden floors, luxury leather chairs and soft white walls. There are no extravagant paintings, tablecloths or plants that are typically common-place in most Indian eateries. According to one of the partners Sarah this was a conscious decision to bring a new style of simple surroundings, “We wanted to ensure that each table was almost its own little bubble, so it was important to create a lot of space, comfort and relaxation for each party whether that be a table of two or twelve”. The restaurant is run by Sarah and partner Sham, who had worked in his family restaurant in York before deciding to venture out on his own with Rumi’s last year. Sarah’s background lies in out-side catering, restaurants, hotels and cafe’s, meaning the pair together have a vast array of both knowledge and experience. Sham’s family originated from Bangladesh meaning he has been able to incorporate both his own knowledge alongside that of his family, to the point at which they have become the restaurants greatest critics. He says “my family are perfectionists coming from the restaurant trade so we have been very meticulous in getting the right chefs in and choosing the right dishes”. The menu includes many of the Indian classics alongside a fresh and modern range of fish and vegetarian dishes plus some old family recipes not seen on any other indian menu in the area. The restaurant has received fantastic feedback so far and continues to
be fully booked most weekends, along with an increased number of walk ins and takeaways. The restaurant plans to open on a lunch time with special snacks and Indian spiced teas to cater for the growing demand, whilst the partners are already considering a second site in the near future. This rapid growth hasn’t completely surprised Sarah because she believes the town is one of great opportunity if you get the proposition right, “I’ve lived here for my entire life and I just know how people talk and how businesses become part of the community. It may seem like a cliché but the best part of what we do is seeing our guests happy and enjoying their evening. Beverley is a close-knit town and we know that word of mouth is crucial therefore quality of food, service and surroundings can go along way very quickly”. Rumi’s has been open less than three months and already it is building a name for itself as one of the most exciting and modern restaurants in the area. Combining authentic quality food with first class service in simply stunning surrounds, Rumi’s is another example of the transformation taking place in this historic market town. Blending the new with the old to give you a taste of change, reaffirming that eating out is no longer just about what is on your plate; it is about immersing yourself in a truly special, unique and enjoyable dining experience that will keep you coming back for more. ULTRA WHITE COLLAR BOXING Photography Supplied by Ultra Health gracefully combined with charity is a recipe for something magical. Ultra white-collar boxing has cleverly combined boxing and fundraising, on behalf of Cancer Research UK with 85 cities already taking part in this revolutionary and elegant event. Black tie dress code and ringside VIP tables will make for a special evening at Hull’s KC Stadium. So, get your diaries out and pencil in Saturday 14th November, to be a part of this remarkable event. Novice boxers have already begun their 8 weeks of training preparing themselves for their fights. The boxers will be matched accordingly, depending on their ability and weight to ensure that the fights will be fair and safe. There are however many critics that claim the event is too dangerous, putting complete novice fighters in a boxing ring after only 8 weeks worth of training. Nevertheless the fighters are the ones who decide to sign up with a complete understanding of the risks faced in such a physical sport. UWCB has raised an outstanding £2.2 million within the past 8 months and continues to take the UK by storm. Training and fundraising has commenced for the November date at the KC and tickets are now available to purchase online at www.ultrawhitecollarboxing.co.uk with the event starting at 5pm.
