ome wasn’t built in a day’ – a phrase that many revert to when trying to console the impatient folk amongst us. Basically what this means is ‘wait, keep going and you’ll get what you want eventually’ though I’m sure you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who responds to the above phrase without a flicker of sarcasm. Nevertheless, it has never been more apparent to me that good things come to those who are patient and to those who work bloody hard for what they want. Hard work certainly doesn’t mean you will achieve your goals immediately, however pair this with persistence and you will most certainly succeed. I’m going to throw another parental phrase in your direction that I’m sure you’ve heard many times before – ‘slow and steady wins the race’ which again would be met with an equally sarcastic remark had it been put to me in my younger years. The meaning behind this classic isn’t far from the first phrase and this may even be more popular than the last (I know I got this one thrown at me throughout my childhood). Anyway, in my opinion working hard to achieve something spectacular takes a number of things – one mainly being time, or dedication as I referred to in a rather long-winded fashion above. The second is talent, which is not such an uncommon quality. The third and final thing is foresight, in other words the ability to look at the bigger picture at an early stage in your career. These three things have allowed Alexander Turnbull to turn his ambitions into reality. Turn to page 24 to find out how Alexander went from ‘shampoo boy’ to ‘award-winning’ stylist.

TEMPTATION
once again sounded me out... LOCO EDITOR, Tom Horner
Last month was as hectic as ever, though I still found time to relax and enjoy myself - here are a selection of my favourite people, products and places. Where I ate: Fish restaurants may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but don’t knock them until you’ve tried them. I personally am a real lover of anything from the sea and Bait Fish & Grill Restaurant is without doubt one of my favourite places to eat in Hull. With a relaxed take on fine dining, I like the service, the atmosphere and of course the food. This time I had the belly pork, with prawns, applesauce and red cabbage – and yes it was as good as it sounds (washed down with a couple of bottles of red wine). What I watched: As always, I like to focus in on one particular genre of entertainment – sport, and lots of it. I was spoilt for choice this month, with thanks to The Masters, Anthony Joshua’s Heavyweight Title fight and of course, the culmination of the football season. Aside from the fairy tale of Leicester’s Premier League campaign, I watched probably the worst defence of a World Heavyweight Title belt in history, when Charles Martin stepped into the ring with Anthony Joshua. It isn’t everyday you get to watch a Heavyweight Title clash and quite honestly, I was disappointed. Congratulations Anthony of course, but still it was hardly worth the wait. What I bought: I try my best to keep my spending to a minimum, honestly I do. However, temptation once again sounded me out and to be honest, I was happy to oblige. I like to look smart, which is why I purchased a pair of Adidas Stan Smith trainers, for casual wear as well as a couple of pairs of chinos from Zara (guilty). Not only do they look pretty cool, they’re unbelievably comfy – so naturally I haven’t taken them off. Elsewhere on the spending radar, the Grand National sucked a fair few pennies out of my pocket, and although I did put some money each way on the horse that came a close second, my other bets were not so successful. Oh well, same again next year...

paul woodford WHY CAR DEALERS NEED TO BE TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANT TO BUY CARS...
I
have a theory for why you don’t hear people waxing lyrical about the brilliance of the car buying experience, and it doesn’t involve jumping on any bandwagons. The clue is in the word, ‘experience’. I can’t understand why more car dealers don’t take advantage of the opportunities for engagement – both online and physical – to ensure that a customer’s experience starts long before they ever need a car.A friend of mine, Chris Davies who reviews cars at www.carproductstested.com is as passionate as me on this subject. He told me, “buying a car is an important moment for someone, and they will remember it for years to come. Fondly or not, that’s down to the dealership.” I agree, and for me this starts before the buying cycle. For me it starts, and ends with social media. If, as a Dealer Principle or a Business Manager in a local car dealership, you don’t have either the passion for the brand or the time to invest in creating social content, that’s fine. I guarantee there will be at least one person in the company who does. Empower those people to share their passion. Or if you really don’t have anyone you can throw an iPad at (I don’t believe you!), get in touch with someone who is already out there with a profile, creating content. What do you create though? Simple - start with what local motorists (crucially, not enthusiasts) want to watch, not what you want to create. Produce something which entertains, helps or answers existing questions. A detailed car review, with detailed technical insights might be something you want to make, but does it really engage with every 12
MAY 2016
day people who don’t go online to watch car content? Probably not on a local level. A funny, well produced video showing people how to wash their car properly, how to do winter car checks, or tips on getting a good deal on buying a car is much more likely to engage. Hey, it might even get shared – therein lies the holy grail – third party endorsement of your brand! (Let’s not mention viral – we haven’t got time.) Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIN, YouTube and Periscope are all places where conversations relevant to your business are already happening. There will be questions out there you’d love to be answering, and you need to find them. Car dealers should be engaging on social media if they want to engage, not just exist as a National brand. Engage, and you’ll build an audience. Then you are limited only by your imagination and ideas. You could create a monthly event at the dealership – streamed live or recorded for YouTube with prizes, fun family activities and staged Q&As with a panel of local people relevant to the audience. Invite motorsport stars, traffic police representatives, councillors – after all, what we really want to know are the real answer to those speed camera questions, and what’s going to be done about those pot holes. Not why you want to sell us a car. Here’s an idea. Let’s create a motoring community in East Yorkshire which results in people like me (and my Mum!) visiting car showrooms before we want to buy a car.

THE FUTURE OF MOTOR RACING, IS HISTORY... East Yorkshire motoring presenter, Paul Woodford straps into a 1950s racing car to give us an insight into motor racing’s golden era.
T
he year is 1966, the world is in full cultural flow following years of post-war sepia, and motor racing was – as the lyrics to the Rush song Red Barchetta above suggest – about to enter a ‘better varnished’ era. Bernard Worth fires up the scarlet Mille Miglia Ferrari Type 166’s 2 litre V12 engine, lining up on the grid to take part in a race which was set to change the face of sports car racing forever. It is staggering to think that the cars which lined up in the first historic sports car race – for cars manufactured before 1955 – were bought for a few hundred pounds in the ‘50s, yet now represent the very highest end of the motoring investment world, with prices for any of the cars in that original race well into the millions. More staggering still for me, is that I found myself lining up alongside Bernard on that very same piece of race track fifty years on, surrounded by a number of other cars and drivers who all took their place alongside Worth’s iconic Ferrari in motor racing’s hall of fame.I was at Castle Combe race circuit to present a new TV series based around the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC), which is celebrating fifty years since Guy Griffiths first decided it was time to do something about the flocks of then obsolete, purpose-built GT cars gathering dust in the corners of barns across the English countryside.I was strapped into the number 2 D-Type Jaguar, a car which captured my imagination as a young petrolhead,
14
MAY 2016
a young petrolhead with its raucous straight six engine, and fighter plane aesthetics. The aesthetics of all of the cars on the grid is largely accidental of course; these were purpose-built racing cars, for whom beauty arguably came secondary, and certainly grew bolder with age. Even if you’re not the slightest bit into cars or motorsport, it’s likely that you will have heard of a race track called Goodwood. A race track famous for hosting some of the world’s most famous and admired historic sports car events, playing host to superstar actors, musicians and racing drivers.

I WAS STRAPPED INTO THE NUMBER 2 D-TYPE JAGUAR A CAR WHICH CAPTURED MY IMAGINATION AS A YOUNG PETROLHEAD
It all started with this race. And here I was cramped up in the D-Type’s sparse cabin, the smell and haze of fuel, and the sound of race engines ringing in my ears as the cars burst into life, flagged off by the same lady who flagged off the 1966 race, Penny Griffiths. I felt it all – the emotion and nostalgia of a day which would change everything. The experience took hold of all my senses, the way motorsport undoubtedly should. The future of motor racing is history, and you can see wheelto-wheel racing action from the Historic Sports Car Club at race tracks across the UK in the club’s 50th anniversary year. I urge you to visit www.hscc.org.uk and get yourself to a race weekend to experience first-hand the glamour of motor racing’s golden era. And in the meantime, I’ll keep working with LOCO Magazine to bring you a taste of it, right here. Paul Woodford presents the SSTV television series, and you can catch the first show of the new series on Sky channel, Motors TV next month, featuring leading names from the world of motoring, including former Top Gear presenter Tiff Needell. If you can’t wait that long, head to www.paulwoodford.co.uk and check out the show preview on Paul’s motoring blog.

herry Lane Garden Centres have extended their already blooming Beverley store, and will be adding to this build as they are set to extend their Croft Café & Bistro in the coming months. After opening their Beverley site in 2012, Cherry Lane have offered fantastic value for money in a wide range of horticultural products and leisure retail, ranging from garden furniture and equipment, through to pet supplies and aquatics. Sprucing up your garden doesn’t have to be as simple as a couple of hanging baskets and the ever-popular water feature – now with Cherry Lane, Beverley at your disposal you can treat your backyard as if it were another room in your home. Costing approximately £150,000 the new build has allowed the Beverley centre to house even more stock, away from the perils of the good old English weather. Aside from their extensive range of flowerbeds and gardening products, Cherry Lane’s furniture is now housed in the extension that took almost two months to complete. This thankfully has had no effect to business or the customers, and was completed by an in-house team of designers and workforce, adding to the reassurance that this build has been done by experts in the garden and leisure retail industry. Furthermore, following the start of the Croft Café & Bistro extension on April 16th, Beverley and the wider East Riding community can look forward to an even better outdoor retail experience, now that a plan for 16

ROSE BUNS Emma our Senior Stylist says: This season I am loving the 90’s vibe that is not only trending on the catwalks but also on the high street. Double buns have been around for a while now with people such as Arianna Grande and Rita Ora sporting this look on a regular basis. I decided to put a slight twist on the classic double bun, I did this by adding a zig zag parting which we all remember from the 90’s and I also moved the placement to the nape of the neck to create a more sophisticated look but still on trend. I decided to plait the buns to create a petal effect, hence the names rose buns! Have fun with this easy to create style and try this at home. Check out the video step by step, which also shows you another way to wear this style at locomagazine.co.uk

lexander Turnbull is a man to admire, having already spent almost two decades at the pinnacle of the hair and beauty industry. Admittedly Mr Turnbull was ‘pretty rubbish at school’ though this did not hinder the eventual winner of the North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year 2010. Going back 21-years and starting out as a shampoo boy, Alexander quickly established himself as a natural talent and was practicing for the National Hairdressers’ Federation Championships within a year; later winning the competition. Two years later, he landed the award for Student British Champion, which many would regard as an outstanding achievement for a young boy who had been in the game for such a short period of time. From this, Alexander’s career jumped to new heights, as he began collecting an abundance of admiration from his peers. The British Newcomer Award kicked things off at the turn of the Millennium; awards and nominations followed in their droves, all holding equal significance – the
24
MAY 2016
Matrix Artistic Recognition Award in 2013 is one that certainly springs to mind. From humble beginnings Alexander has managed to grow a successful business from the ground up, along with a reputation to rival most stylists across the globe. His artwork can be seen all over the world, which proves that anything is possible if you put your mind to it – so you really can’t blame him for having to pinch himself from time to time. “I always thought that it would be great to travel and work with hair, doing a job you love and getting paid for it. I believe in setting up 5-year plans and setting yourself goals and targets, so if you achieve these things then great, but if you don’t then at least you have tried with no regrets.” A career plan for Alexander may or may not have included work in New York and around the world – however his salon in Anlaby has always been a foundation for any of his major projects. “I opened the salon (Alexander Hair and Beauty) when I was 21 and I’m now 35-years old so my journey in hairdressing has been massive and got to a point where a lot of the time is spent travelling the world, styling for shows and fashion shoots. I was
recently in New York on a corporate shoot called ‘True Pioneers’ which was exciting and a great experience. I work regularly at London, Paris and New York Fashion Week and many Exhibitions around the world, these opportunities were offered to me after I appeared on TV in the Great British Hairdresser.” Just to swoop in momentarily. If Alexander’s previous projects don’t pack a punch, I’m pretty sure one of his latest collaborations will: “I am currently one of the creative directors for L’Oreal Matrix. Working alongside others we are able to determine new trends for the whole of Europe, showcasing the latest trends which will be fashionable this year and next” So, if you happen to stumble upon something L’Oreal Matrix related, chances are Alexander had quite a lot to do with it. Looking ahead, it may seem like there is little for Mr Turnbull to conquer – having done so much in just two decades. At 35 it’s obvious that Alexander isn’t about to put down the scissors and hairspray for a number of years yet (unless he forgot to mention his early retirement plan) so what is in store for Alexander Hair and Beauty? Let’s find out.

“I work regularly at London, Paris and New York Fashion Weeks and many exhibitions around the world, these opportunities were offered to me after I appeared on TV in the Great British Hairdresser” “I’ve got a lot of plans for the next couple of years. More than anything I love spending time with my wife Emma and my son Zachary, but one thing that is really exciting is the British Hairdressing Awards. They are the biggest awards in the world; I’ve been nominated for awards numerous times and have actually won there twice. My images have gone worldwide to China, America, South Africa and beyond. I have been fortunate enough to find local girls as models, I’m passionate and love my home town it’s great to work with local girls – I’ve styled Lizzie Holland, Leah Wendy and Sarah Woodmansey all of whom I’ve used on many British Hairdressing Award shoots in the past and I’m looking to find Hull’s next top hair model. I will be holding a casting day for local girls and a girl in hull could find herself on the cover of a glossy magazine and be the face I use for my next entry to The British Hairdresser Awards. The dynamics of this haven’t yet been arranged but this is something that I definitely want to pursue. I will be announcing the 28
MAY 2016
details of this casting/competition on my Facebook page, very soon.” An opportunity like this for a local girl from Hull could be life changing, which is why this is more than just a business move from Alexander. His brand is held in high esteem nationally and internationally, his clients young and old will vouch that this does not take away from his personable approach to his business. “Alexander Hair and Beauty as a brand is accessible to all ages, we cater for clients of all ages from the very young to some lovely ladies now in their 90s, they are all important to me.” Having won so many trophies and accolades, it was to be expected that Alexander wouldn’t pin one as his favourite, or one that defines his career. However one of the most memorable occasions was when the salon team were nominated for the British Hairdressing award Artistic Team of the Year. For Alexander and his manager Skye, there was a great sense of pride and achievement that surrounded this moment; seeing their
team progressing from budding stylists to worthy nominees. Alexander’s team is clearly heralded as one of the best in the country, if not the world – a nomination of this magnitude is hard earned. Therefore, having been at least nominated for virtually every notable award on offer in the Hair and Beauty industry, we are very lucky indeed to have such an influential stylist and team, right here in Hull. FLAVOUR of the month
It’s all about asparagus...
This little fella is bang in season now, so we’re going to show you TWO delicious recipes ready for the end of Spring
RECIPE NUMBER 1: ROASTED ASPARAGUS WRAPPED IN PARMA HAM No messing about with this one. It’s healthy, tasty and easy to make (you can even whack a poached egg on top if you’re really clever) – winning. Ingredients: 2 bunches of asparagus (around 24 stems), mint leaves, 2 tbsp olive oil, grated zest ½ lemon, 8 slices parma ham Directions: Pre-heat your oven at 200*C. Remove ends of asparagus and cook spears in salted water for 2-minutes. Drain, place in cold water and leave to rest. Crush mint leaves with olive oil and lemon zest in pestle and mortar. Place asparagus on tray and coat with dressing. Make bundles of 3 spears and wrap in parma ham. Repeat with remaining bundles and place on baking tray. Cook until ham is crisp. RECIPE NUMBER 2: PANCETTA WRAPPED SALMON WITH GRIDDLED ASPARAGUS AND LIME CRÈME FRAICHE Ingredients: 2 bunches of asparagus (around 24 stems), 2 tbsp olive oil 4 skinless salmon fillets, 8 pancetta rashers, 100ml crème fraiche, 2 tbsp mayonnaise, grated zest 1 lemon and juice of ½ Directions: Pre-heat oven at 220*C. Place the asparagus in a shallow roasting tin and toss with half the olive oil. Season well and roast in the oven for 5 minutes. Season each salmon fillet, wrap in 2 pancetta rashers and brush with remaining olive oil. Remove the asparagus from the oven after 5-minutes and place the salmon on top. Return to the oven for a further 8-10 minutes until the salmon is cooked and the pancetta is crisp. Mix together the crème fraiche and mayonnaise, then stir through the lime zest and juice. Season and serve with the asparagus and salmon.

FLAVOUR of the month
The People’s Republic THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC IS SIMPLE, MUSIC – AND WITH DAVE ROTHERAY AT THE HELM OF THE VENTURE, THERE’S NO WONDER.
T
he former guitarist of Hull band The Beautiful South has backed the bar down Newland Avenue, and will apparently be trying his hand at the odd bit of pint pulling (according to the bar staff). “I wanted it to be linked to music. It started from music at least, I wanted something with a link to world music and I thought that a music menu, split into different continents would be cool and I wanted it all on vinyl. I wanted to have beers that came from different continents, so I wanted African music with African beer and Asian music with Asian beers. The People’s Republic is really just a reference to the people of the world and also I quite like that it has the word ‘pub’ in it.” Straight to the point no nonsense branding, I like it. Basically for all you beer connoisseurs out there, this promises to be a Mecca for you to explore unchartered territory. Beers and ales have become a real trend in recent years, which is music to many ears I’m sure. However, Dave wants The People’s Republic to be a bar that does things a little differently (in a good way of course). “Although world beers have become a little bit of a phenomenon in the past 20-years and world music has as well, they’ve never really gone hand in hand in anywhere that I’ve seen. I find it weird the attitude towards music in pubs; presumably you could play anything you wanted in a pub, everyone has laptops nowadays with all genres at your fingertips, yet you go in there and you hear the same 20 songs day in day out.” The way it all works is simple, the menu lists a range of beers from nearly every continent you could think of – which is matched to music from that particular region. Aside from the beer and the music (which may I add is all played on vinyl) The People’s Republic have thrown in board games, as well as some vintage arcade games to compliment their nostalgic décor.

I WANTED SOMETHING WITH A LINK TO WORLD MUSIC AND I THOUGHT THAT A MUSIC MENU SPLIT INTO DIFFERENT CONTINENTS WOULD BE COOL ...AND I WANTED IT ALL ON VINYL
“I suppose the look of it is partly because of the name The People’s Republic which was what the Republic of East Germany was called when the East was separated from the West. So I was thinking of 1960’s and 70’s East Germany vibe. I suppose this is how I picture a bar would be if the East German experiment had worked out.” So there you have it. Anyway, I’ll leave you with Dave’s go-to choices for music and beer, ready for when you visit him down Newland Avenue: “Well my favourite country for beer is Germany. But my favourite German beer is unfortunately one that we don’t have yet; I really like Augestiner Helles, that’s a Bavarian lager. In terms of music, my personal little niche of music is early jazz, like 1920’s and 1930’s jazz. I’ve always had an affection for it because it’s what my mum and dad used to listen to when I was growing up.” 38

upils, staff and superheroes – along with a few bucketloads of gunge – joined forces to raise £2,825 during Pocklington School Charity Week 2016 from March 14th - 17th. A highly competitive Easter bake-off, followed by a lively Lower School fair, set the tone for a week of events which united the school in good-natured, creative fundraising fun. Sixth Formers presented themselves in a superhero butler auction, selling their services as assistants for the day, in a bidding war expertly presided over by Mr Hall. Tuesday’s popular non-uniform day also saw human 10pin bowling and the ever-riotous big game of musical chairs on Fentons’ Fields. The highlight of (almost) everyone’s week – the staff gunging – took place after pupils and staff voted enthusiastically for their choice among those teachers lucky enough to make the shortlist. Pupils and staff also bid for the honour of tipping the gunge over recipients, with some buckets fetching £30-plus. Three teachers with the most votes were duly gunged: Mr BraidwoodSmith, Miss Roman-Blencoe and Mr Tomaszewski, who retires this year after 26 years at the school. All took their gunging gracefully without (much) complaint. The Middle School fair, with numerous innovative stalls, provided a backdrop to an energetic game of three-a-side football. Students competed against the staff ‘dream team’, ambitiously named by its players, Mr Hughes, Mr Cimmerman and Mr Hutchinson. A huge thank-you to Mrs Alexander for organising the events and thank you to all pupils, parents and staff who contributed in any way. The money raised was split between our four chosen charities: Cool Earth; Yorkshire Air Ambulance; Winston’s Wish and Project Mala.

“
There’s a great opportunity to grow a business in the Humber region, a place where people value strong relationships and excellent service alongside good value for money.I cut my teeth in the banking industry in London, and it’s a breath of fresh air to work here
“
What does KC Finance do?
We’re an asset and commercial finance lender. Our speciality is working with SMEs to put them in touch with sources of funding they may not have thought of, and help in unlocking that for them. We like to meet clients in a traditional face-to-face way, so we can understand what makes them tick, and how best we can use our knowledge to help them facilitate sales growth or increase market penetration.
Why South Cave?
It has the best of both worlds. The East Riding is a beautiful place to live and for children to grow up in, but it’s on the doorstep of an economically and commercial vibrant area. The green energy industry is making its home here; Hull will be the City of Culture next year; and the Humber has the UK’s busiest port complex. I believe this is a region poised for big things, and I want KC Finance to be part of that.
What were you doing previously?
My career has been in finance. I was a Sales Director with a finance company based in Guildford, and moved to Leeds in 2012 to establish a northern office for the firm. Although that’s still operating, I had decided to go it alone in my own business, which I set up in February last year.
What was the main reason for going it alone?
I’d always had the dream of having my own business, and I’d dabbled with it in the past, but never done it seriously. Putting heart and soul into running a venture you’ve created allows you to realise your own vision about the kind of service you want to provide for clients, and become much more the master of your own destiny. There’s none of the inertia in decision-making that can be found in big companies, and there’s no such thing as office politics.
What are your aspirations for the company?
We aspire to steady and sustainable growth, with a view to becoming the 42
MAY 2016
region’s ‘go-to’ niche and specialist finance company for SMEs by 2020. I think that’s achievable, and we’ll do it by growing our team by adding experienced specialists in certain areas. After that I’d like us to do more work in the ‘soft asset’ technology market with a particular focus on IT software and renewable energy products – but always finding the finance for other companies to succeed in those areas. That’s how we can make our best contribution to this region.
What are the pros and cons of working from home?
Flexibility is the biggest benefit. These days ‘the office’ is where the WiFi is. Business can be done anywhere and everywhere when you’re armed with a laptop, a phone, and a willingness to make yourself available to meet clients where and when they want. Not having premises streamlines the whole operation, generating cost savings that can be passed on to clients. There’s no regular commute stealing time out of every working day, and if necessary you can still be working, even though you’re at home, whilst you wait for tradesmen to come and tackle jobs. More importantly, I can arrange to be here for my partner and family – aged four, six and seven – with no detriment to the business, or more importantly, the clients. Those are the pros; I really can’t see any cons.
What advice would you give to anyone dabbling with the idea of going it alone? Just do it – why would you want to grow old wondering ‘what if?’ That said, do it with your eyes open. Make sure you have a workable business idea. Do your research. Know your USP. Understand your market. Get good objective advice – and that doesn’t mean your mum, who’d think any idea was good because you’d suggested it. Good accountants are a valuable source of business advice these days, as well as for looking after your accounts. Doing your own books is possible, but unless you’re an accountant you won’t know how to do them correctly, and the time involved won’t be earning you any revenue. And think outside the box, like we do. You might start thinking about financing your new business with a call to KC Finance!

B r i d l i n g t o n
Green Day’s American Idiot comes to The Spa, Bridlington with an explosive story and a powerful cast to match. I spoke to X-Factor Finalist Amelia Lily and singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner about their roles in this critically acclaimed production. STORY BY
T O M
H O R N E R
t
ARTS
he Spa, Bridlington is no stranger to award-winning productions and equally a revered star, which is why the likes of Amelia Lily and Newton Faulkner should feel right at home come June 7th when they will set up camp for six days. Likewise, both Amelia and Newton are stepping back into familiar territory, having previously played at The Spa – in different capacities that we will later touch on. Winner of two Tony Awards and the 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Album Show, American Idiot is the story of three friends in search of meaning post 9/11. This obviously includes music written by American rock-band Green Day, all from their album American Idiot released in 2004, which later went platinum after selling over 15-million copies worldwide.
AMELIA LILY
After breaking onto the scene as a contestant and an eventual X-Factor Finalist in 2011, Amelia Lily has broadened her horizons; having entered the world of theatre. Whilst still pursuing a solo career in music, Amelia plays the role of ‘Whatsername’ in Green Day’s American Idiot and has fallen in love with the story: “The show is about post 9/11 and it’s about three guys that all go on their own journeys to find meaning. One of them goes off to the army, one of them moves to the city and gets into drugs and one of them stays at home with his pregnant girlfriend and we see one of their journeys progress throughout the show and we see the darker times, the happy times and they all eventually unite at the end. The momentum is so high throughout the show and I can honestly say that I’ve never seen or heard of a musical like it.”
Newton Faulkner plays ‘Johnny’in the upcoming production - American Idiot
NEWTON FAULKNER
Playing the role of Johnny, Newton Faulkner has had to juggle his preparations for the production with his UK Tour, as he continues to promote his latest album Human Love. Having played at The Spa once before at Viking FM’s Brid Bash, Newton is looking forward to his return to Bridlington and says he is eager to perform: “It’s actually a really welcome ‘something else’ to do in a lot of ways, because I’ve feel like touring I’ve done enough of and I know all the pitfalls of it and how well it can go, I’ve been doing this more than 10-years so it’s a long time and it’s actually really nice. I’m getting up considerably earlier than most touring people, because we’re on a bus and I’m usually first downstairs, but I go downstairs, I make coffee, I’ve got my script and I’m just working, it’s great and I’m loving it.”
MEET ‘JOHNNY’
“It was mentioned that it would be the best sort of opportunity for me and the best role for me to play, but this was as a kind of dream or a possible dream in a sense of ‘American Idiot would be amazing but it’s probably all sorted out by now’ and then after being told independently that
Amelia Lily plays ‘Whatsername’in the upcoming production - American Idiot
American Idiot would be a great role for me, a really old friend of mine got in touch and said he needed someone to play Johnny because he was in American Idiot and I just couldn’t say no, everything aligned in the weirdest way and also the guy that got in touch was a really old friend, I actually used to play bass in a band with him that played mainly Green Day songs about 16-years ago.”
MEET ‘WHATSERNAME’ “I play a character called Whatshername and she basically doesn’t have a name, or we never actually find out what it is. She’s a city girl and Johnny who is the lead, he moves to the city and meets Whatshername and you see them have this totally romantic fling throughout the show. You see their journey blossom and they go through some really tough times, then towards the end of the show you kind of realise that he has to choose her or the drugs. We also see Whatshername just let rip and let her frustration with Johnny loose.” Green Day’s American Idiot Show Times: June 7th – 8pm (Tues) / June 8th – 8pm (Wed) June 9th – 8pm (Thurs) / June 10th – 8pm (Fri) June 11th – 2.30pm (Sat) MAY 2016

n the whole, pole dancing is one of the more unorthodox methods of fitness, but in all fairness it is probably one of the most physically challenging activities I’ve seen in a long time. The strength needed to spin upside down, into a position that is most certainly not natural and make it look easy, really takes some doing – which is where Emma Nicholson at Studio Boutique comes in. Emma has been pole dancing for 10-years and boasts an impressive CV demonstrating a career with a wealth of teaching experience along with numerous achievements and appointments within the pole dance industry. Since opening in 2010 the Studio, situated down Beverley Road in Hull, offers a range of classes to all levels of fitness to a wide range of clients. Although pole dancing is the primary discipline at Studio Boutique, other classes are provided which complement a regular pole dance class, that focus on and incorporate elements of core strength and flexibility training. A word from Emma Nicholson - “The instructors Laura, Danielle and myself work hard to create a friendly, welcoming and professional environment at Studio Boutique. The ladies that attend our classes are wonderful, enthusiastic, fun and inspiring. Between us all we make Studio Boutique an extremely vibrant and exciting place to be.” “The pole industry is huge, with different styles and genres developing all the time. We embrace all styles of pole dance at Studio Boutique, from the classic sexy style through to more contemporary and lyrical styles and everything in between. Some girls like to wear heels and bikinis, others prefer bare feet and gym gear - we don’t mind what people wear and encourage people to explore what works for them” By hosting workshops, concentrated classes and practice sessions Emma’s studio can turn a novice into someone who looks like a natural on the pole. Aside from the fact that pole dancing is undoubtedly a fantastic way to keep in shape, Emma’s accommodating and professional approach to her workshops and classes will fill anyone who walks through Studio Boutique’s doors with complete confidence. I personally, would want to feel as safe as possible if I was spinning around, upside down on a 10ft pole above hard, laminated floor – and I believe that I probably would so under Emma’s supervision. That being said, I think I’ll leave the pole dancing to the lovely team at Studio Boutique… Facebook – Studio Boutique – Pole Dance Studio Twitter – @studioboutique1 Instagram – studioboutiquehull YouTube – studioboutique

Paul Schofield
Paul Schofield has been conducting tours of Hull and Beverley since 1988 www.tourhull.com What is your favourite place to visit in Hull?
The Old Town. It encapsulates everything that makes Hull the great city it is. From its medieval origins, its role as a port, fascinating architecture spanning centuries, free museums and great pubs!
Who is your favourite player of all time, for your beloved Hull KR?
Roger Millward - the greatest rugby league player I’ve ever seen. He had it all - passing skills, elusiveness, pace, bravery, leadership and natural talent. A genius!
If you could visit three places in the world, where would you go?
I’ll choose three places I’ve never been to. Cuba for its history and music, Iceland for its spectacular landscape, and New Zealand for its beauty.

Your favourite thing to do in your spare time?
I have so many favourite things. I love socialising especially in pubs, live theatre is another passion, chilling while watching good television is also important. Above all watching and listening to music gives me the greatest pleasure.
Describe yourself in just three words… Optimistic, happy, determined.
