Deliverables

To create a concept and pitch for the OUGD 2015 Yearbook and End of year show.

The audience of the yearbook is those who will be attending the end of year show, such as professionals, tutors and parents. New prospective students and returning students will also have a chance to see the yearbook.

Layout

One of the things we wanted was a definitive colour scheme that runs throughout the publication. After conducting a bit of research into colour schemes we decided on gold because of the associations towards it. Gold is associated with being the best, the top etc. This would also be something interesting visually if it was foil stamped. The use of black and gold together is something we also like as it creates a large contrast.

To create a more unique looking appearance for the publication we looked into possible bespoke production methods that could be incorporated. Die cutting to the front cover is what we decided on as it means there is the potenital for two covers, and something to join these together.

The publication is about the students work, so for the visual look of the inside pages, we wanted a layout which reflected this work strongly. The use of a large section for imagery and a smaller section for text appealed as it means there is room for work of different shapes and sizes. A large space gives the freedom to create a workable grid suitable for all work.

Initial Layout Development With the idea of a large space for imagery, we decided on moving forward with a landscape publication. We decided on the text being on the edge of the left or right hand page, with the majoriy of the double page spreads dedicated to imagery.

As well as this there were discussions about spreads throughout the publication to split it down. These spreads would be events/moments that the entire year experienced together. The layout for these would be more spacious, but would entail the same design in the majority of it being used for imagery.

Personalisation The concept is to create a more personalised experience for both the students in the book and the readers. This will be achieved by having interactivity with a selection of stickers at the front of the publication which readers can place throughout on the work they particularly like or want to come back to. These will have positive comments or imagery on them, spanning from general compliments about the work to more specific notes.

The Cover There will also be a number of bookmarks so readers are able to remember pages that way as well. Both these bookmarks and stickers will be in gold as to work with the colour scheme. Marking of pages will also be useful when it comes to the show as it means the reader is able to look through the book and mark the work they like, and then be able to find this persons work in the show and look at more of it.

The publication cover will be thick black stock with a die cut circle in the bottom right corner, where the publication title will be seen through. ‘Graphic Design, 2015’ will be embossed in the top left corner. This will create a clean and sophisticated appearance. The inner cover will be a white sheet with all the stickers on. These will be hidden when the top cover is closed.

Publication Spreads The spreads show a variety of layouts that are possible, as well as the type of work that could be included. This shows the versitility of the grid. The students themselves would get the chance to choose their spread layout from a selection. This creates a more personalised approach for them as they are choosing how their work will be displayed. The images to the right show how the stickers and bookmarks could be used.
