DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Greetings all. As I write this, I have been here almost six months and if there is one thing that I have learned it is that our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services staff are the City’s most dedicated employees. They are passionate about their work – doing whatever is needed to ensure the best services are provided to the public. As with many other industries, we face a shortage of staff; yet still maintain over 29 parks, take care of our buildings, ensure recreation is offered throughout the year, encourage art and music in the community, and so much more. Thank you for your patience as we tackle this workload. Please know that those of you who have shared your gratitude or complimented a staff member for something they have done does not go unnoticed. Kindness really does go a long way and helps remind staff of why we work for parks and this great city! The Department, among many other things, is responsible for taking care of millions of dollars of ongoing maintenance, deferred maintenance and capital improvements. This last quarter we have been able to move a few capital improvement projects along. We are thankful to our partners – other City departments, our Commissions, City Council, those who advocate for us at the State level and our contractors/ consultants who help drive our projects to completion. In the last quarter we have been able to move the following projects forward: Grape Bowl South Bleachers – Construction completed in September 2021. This project included installation of additional support bracing under the existing stair treads along with new hand railing in existing stair aisles for accessibility improvements.
DeBenedetti Park Improvements – Plans for phase 1 and 2 of the project are 75% complete. These phases include 200+ parking stalls on Century Blvd., paths of travel including lighting, benches and trash receptacles, restroom and concession building, playground area, underground utilities, irrigation system, grass, trees and shrubs. Blakely Sports Fields and Irrigation Improvements – Work consists of renovating 5.5 acres of the park including reconstruction of two ball diamonds, a new basketball court, sports field amenities, underground utilities and new turf. The bid opening was November 3, 2021 and we anticipate awarding a contract to the successful bidder soon. A state grant of $882,000 will help fund this project. Lodi Lake Bank Restoration – The Public Works Department has been working diligently on the permitting process for the Lodi Lake Bank Restoration project which aims to mitigate erosion of the bank and includes tree removal, tree trimming, riprap and sod installation. $1,000,000 courtesy of Assemblymember Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove) will help fund this work. Work may start as early as February of 2022. Tony Zupo Field Rebuild – Plans and specifications have been drafted for the rebuild of Tony Zupo Field including the baseball field, dugouts, press box and grandstands that were damaged as a result of arson in 2019. We are grateful to Assemblymember Cooper who successfully advocated to the Legislature to award us with $750,000 to help fund this project. Thank you all for welcoming me to this City. I am truly enjoying meeting and getting to know the community. As we head into the holiday season, I wish each and everyone of you time to enjoy your family and friends, reflect on accomplishments and hurdles you’ve overcome and many chances to visit and recreate in our wonderful City parks.
