DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES

Art in public places reflects and reveals our society, adding meaning and showcasing our city’s uniqueness. It humanizes the built environment and invigorates public spaces. It tells a story of how our past, present and future intersect. The City of Lodi’s most recent celebration of art in public places was for the Cycles of Suffrages Mural. City Council approved funding for the 19th Amendment Centennial Mural Project and the Lodi Arts Commission and Lodi Arts Foundation sought out design submissions from artists to be installed on the wall between the World of Wonders Science Museum and the parking garage at 2 North Sacramento Street. Local artist Tony Segale was selected. The mural commemorates the Centennial of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and was completed in April 2022. The mural is a 30-foot high, striking image that captures the long struggle for women’s suffrage from its first victory with passage of the 19th Amendment – granting suffrage to white women – through an additional 45 years when all women were finally granted suffrage via the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. It is the story of the fight for human rights, diversity, and inclusion. The dedication of the mural was held on October 1, 2022, and was well attended by City Council, City staff, Lodi Arts Commission Members, Lodi Arts Foundation, US Lodi Cycling Club and art enthusiasts. The following is a extract of my speech for the dedication.

Art brings people together. People from all walks of life, different socioeconomic classes, people who love art and those who don’t know much about art at all. Art tells our story to people who have a long history of this area and also educates our visitors. Art makes us feel somethingwhether it’s a sense of belonging, awe of something beautiful depicted, or even a feeling of envy for those like me who have no artistic expression. I was never able to paint or draw or

sculpt. My kids to this day laugh at my stick figures. But for some, art also includes a mastery of music. Here in Lodi we don’t only have a walking trail of murals and sculptures but also a community of music. During COVID everything was shut down and we weren’t allowed to attend concerts, even outside. We resorted to virtual concerts; which were okay but not really the real thing. My very first live concert after COVID was at Hutchins Street Square. It was a concert put on by the Lodi Community Concerts Association. The Sons of Serendip - a quartet of musicians including a keyboard player, a harpist, violinist and singer climbed on stage and said their warm welcomes. The moment they started playing and the lead singer started singing - I was overwhelmed with so much emotion. His angelic voice doubled with glorious music, truly touched me and I started tearing up. That’s what art is to me – a powerful vice that creates emotions – remembrance, celebration, reflection and sometimes sadness. We are fortunate that our City Council recognizes the importance of art in the community. While art in public places is accessible for all, it wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Council, City staff, local businesses and the public. Thank you all for being here today and thank you to the Lodi Arts Commission and Lodi Arts Foundation for everything you do to bring the arts to Lodi. And a special thank you to our artist Tony Segale for this beautiful mural.

If you’re interested in participating in Lodi’s Art in Public Places, we hope to see you at the next Lodi Arts Commission meeting. Check the website for updated meeting days and times, www.lodi.gov.

LODI LAKE

Stormwater pollution comes from many sources. Rain or overwatering can carry pollutants like waste oil, pesticides, paint, and pet waste down the gutter and into a storm drain. Unlike our sinks and toilets, these storm drains flow directly to the Mokelumne River. Pollutants are carried into our waterways without treatment. This contaminates the water and can harm wildlife. The City of Lodi’s Stormwater Management Program is committed to protecting our rivers by involving and educating our residents in stormwater pollution prevention.

What can YOU do?

ïBe storm ready. Rake, Sweep and Remove debris from drain inlets.

ïUse minimal amounts of biodegradable phosphate free soap to wash your cars.

ïWhen painting your home, choose water-based paints.

ïPick up pet waste, bag it, and throw it in the garbage.

ïConserve water, do not over water your lawns.

ïUse an absorbent like kitty litter or sand to soak up oil and antifreeze from your driveways.

ïSpread the word to your neighbors that, helping to maintain clean storm drains helps everyone. Remember.... ONLY RAIN DOWN THE DRAIN
