ogistics in India has been going through a rollercoaster for quite a while now. With no significant development in the exports of the country logistics is facing quite a harsh time at present. The market is becoming more and more fragmented and it is in nobody's hands right now. It is becoming harder to manage this sector because of new companies emerging every day. We are in strong need of consolidation, something that can club all the companies together and tame this unmanaged sector. We need a common platform for everything to be done, a single window for all logistics needs, which will provide us with better direction. One such solution is the e-services in logistics. We can follow the steps of the e-supermarkets like Flipkart, Amazon and many others. These companies have provided a single platform for users to purchase almost everything one desires. Imagine if consumers and service providers have a single platform where both can match the demand and supply. This brings us to the main highlight of this issue – the new age of logistics. We believe that with proper implementation of e-services we can achieve a consolidated market that will erase the ever-marked tag of 'unorganized sector' from Logistics. It is high time we break the barriers of this sector, and consolidation is the key! We would like to add one more step to the human and its kind. Logistics Reckoner will be India's first 100% Online Logistics Magazine in next coming months. Our team required reader's support. Meanwhile, we would like to urge our readers to be a part of the upcoming 6th India Warehousing Show 2016 on 8-10th of June. Hope you will like this issue. See you next month!

The New Age of

Logistics Logistics is always seen as an unorganized sector. E-commerce has seen an unprecedented rise in business in the past year, with Paytm joining Flipkart and Snapdeal in the eight-member unicorn club. A report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch in 2015 stated that the e-commerce market in India will be worth $220 billion by 2025. Yet, e-commerce is beyond just sales and GMV numbers. Speed of delivery is as important as the product quality for a customer. It would not be wrong to say that logistics could be the defining factor for success of e-commerce companies in retaining their customers. At present, the country's logistics industry is worth $300 billion, according to the 'Logistics Market in India 2015-2020' by market researcher Novonous. In fact, the report states, Indian logistics market itself is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 12.17 per cent by 2020. Innovations are very important in this sector, as the demand is always for more reach and faster shipping at lower costs. Yet, the companies will need to invest in automation, while utilising existing resources well. With rise of e-commerce, there is a rising need of e-services in Logistics as well. Which has given birth to many companies that are set to change the future of logistics in India.

Rise of E-services in Logistics For thousands of years, we have been using Logistics. It has always been the key to match demand and supply. For a very long period of time we have used the traditional ways of logistics. Now the time is changing and we are gradually moving with time and taking things electronically. Earlier, people had limited contacts with them. The only way to expand contacts was

to meet new people or share contacts with each other. People had limited options and nothing was standardized. There was no price mechanism. The price is set according to the demand. Now, as the time is changing and the competition is increasing, new generation is stepping into the Logistics business and making things a bit more organized. Now you have a lot of different apps where you can get information about service providers around the country in seconds. In India, there is a rapid rise in number of small fleet owners, and the ratio of small to big businesses has been increasing constantly. This has fragmented the market as it becomes harder to manage small businesses which are scattered all over. It was of utmost priority to consolidate this highly fragmented market, and e-service is the best way to do so. We have started using apps and websites for shopping, travelling, booking a cab, booking a hotel, finding a place to eat, even groceries are ordered via apps nowadays, so why not Logistics? One-time users who require services like packaging and moving have already

shifted to e-services, and now is the time when commercial logistics is also mulling a move. We often see that people are skeptical about the whole process. Many say that they are happy with the way things are moving. We need to remember that change is the only constant, and the key to success is to adapt with the changes and walk in pace with time. While there is a clear road ahead for e-services, it doesn't mean that the current service providers will be at any kind of loss. As we said earlier, we have to adapt ourselves. The rise of e-commerce websites like Flipkart, Amazon did not hurt the retailers, instead, they gave them the option to spread their wings like never before. By using e-services, a retailer set

in a small village could sell his/her product to anyone and everyone. Technology is an opportunity, not a threat. How they are different from Traditional Services? We can say that e-services are somehow a better way of doing the traditional logistics. Here, users have one-stop solution for all their logistics needs. The best part about these services would be the transparency. The prices are same for everyone here, you can rest assure that you are not paying more than others just because you are new to the business, or others have better connections with the vendor. PROS E-services l Transparency l One-stop solutions for every need l Consolidation. l Price mechanism l Multiple options. l tracking

Traditional Services: l One-on-one interaction with the service

provider l Option to choose your provider yourself l Ability

to check the history and background of the service provider l Negotiable.

Prafull Chandan Jha, Founder, LOADQUOT 1. Logistics is seen as an unorganized sector, what attracted you towards this sector? What was your motive behind bringing this platform? Precisely. It is highly unorganized and fragmented sector, which is where I see a massive opportunity. It needs to be organized and recognized as an independent sector rather than just a support system of any industry. This is a sector where profit margins are very less, operating costs are high, vendors credit periods stretched beyond reasonable time frames and quality of service is least of an option. When you put all these factors together we will know that over all logistic/ transport expenses goes beyond reasonable cost. Traditionally, players of this sector have competed very dangerously by Reducing Profit Margins and By Increasing Credit Periods. This has ruined name, reliability, quality, loyalty and profitability. We at LoadQuot believe that this sector needs a complete overhauling. This sector is going to witness a massive demand

and supply gap soon. I personally see a huge demand coming on the way with 'Make is India' initiatives in place, key thrust on infrastructure development, augmentation and increase in of port and railway handling capacity, increasing number of industrial parks and warehousing facility, Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor and new airports at small town and increase in cargo handling capacity at existing airports and GST around the corner. 2. What kind of services do you offer? Presently, we are offering only Inter City & Inter State FTL (Full Truck Load) booking. We are also in the process of entering into LTL (Less than truck load) services. We also figured out some industry which needs a very specific vehicle. Presently we are building on data to enter into that specific sector. 3. Why companies should chose you over the traditional ways of logistics? Who are your target clients? As I stated above, we offer something which this industry has never witnessed earlier. Those are Transparency, Quality and Loyalty mix with right blend of logistic cost. That is how we have advantages over traditional ways of logistics. In traditional ways you never know what the actual price was. But in our way, everything is open. Vendors and Industries both need to follow

transparency. Our target clients are any industries which need transportation and logistics services. 8. There are other software that provide online logistics services, how would you differentiate yourself from others. From the look it may appears same as others but every platform is built with its own unique features. Moreover, we all offer something more unique than others. Someone is specialized in only parcel booking, someone is specialized in FTL, someone only work intra city and someone work only on intercity. As per we are concerned our system is built to handle entire process differently. Our approach is to reduce operating cost for our vendors and logistic cost for our clients. Thus, we work very differently from other online logistic players.

COVER STORY

Kshitiz Joshi, Chief Marketing Officer, Tempawala 1. How can this software/app change this industry? Our app has been designed keeping in mind the business requirements. It has features like getting quotes, placing a booking (with ability to take details of requirement including labour/material type), placing a repeat booking with just few clicks, getting reports of all the trips done till date and tracking the ongoing trips. Customers have given us positive reviews and are happy that they can get complete report of all the trips easily. Their paper work has been reduced drastically, now they can easily manage and see their complete logistics details. GPS tracking enables them to live track the vehicles. This all and more analytics functions that we are going to develop in our system in the coming months have the potential to the entire landscape of the industry, in whatever small manner it can. 2. As a startup, what problems did you face in the initial stages? At startup we need to build everything from scratch. It is most challenging part of startup. Any area where proper processes and systems are not built or any negligence is done in execution, it creates a big problem. Getting good people onboard, retaining them, meeting investors target always keeps team on toes. One needs to make sure that high level of service is delivered to customer and simultaneously team/ vendors are kept motivated in highly tensed and demanding situations. 3. There are other software that provide online logistics services, how would you differentiate yourself from others. Yes there are many apps and websites which provide logistics services. But

LOGISTICS RECKONER I JUNE, 2016

• ours is entirely different offering. One needs to use the app to feel the difference. None of apps provide services and reports as provided by our app. Oue app is capable of handling all the variables. A unique feature which differentiate us e.g.- we can differentiate between plywood customer and glass customer and provide different services very easily. Something our competitors cannot. 4. According to a survey, only 30% of Indians use internet at present. How efficient do you think your software can be in such a market? It's not past or present but future that's important. If you look into projected figures for internet users, smartphone penetration in near future and disruption due 4G coming into picture, the opportunity is huge. New Generation of businesses want to use technology and are willing to switch to us. They see great value in our product. It is something that works with them. New generation is comfortable to shop and order online. They want minimal manual intervention and want to operate from phone only. Thus we believe we have what it takes to be successful in the market.

Electronic commerce is the trading or facilitation of trading in products or services using computer networks, such as the Internet. Electronic commerce draws on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web for at least one part of the transaction's life cycle, although it may also use other technologies such as e-mail.

Ans. LOCO.world is a tech platform for Global logistics and Supply Chain. It's a small start to provide a digital platform to the logistics fraternity to connect, share and prosper. In practical, logistics people are always in need of some resources, information, knowledge etc. which they try to find from different platforms. But still we thank the e-commerce evolution which has given logistics industry a boost and the recognition which was long awaited. 10. Who are your biggest clients at present? Siddhartha Jain Co-Founder, Vaahika.com

Logistics is seen as an unorganized sector, what attracted you towards this sector? What was your motive behind bringing this platform? I have been connected to this sector for a very long time now, firstly I come from a family having logistics background of more then 3 decades, then post my graduation from Roorkee I got my first career break with Tata Motors in its in CVBU division and from there I moved in Automotive and Transportation division of F&S; so to put it together I have been in this sector directly or indirectly. Having seen it closely and knowing problems that my family were facing while running a transport business; I somewhere felt that there is lot of scope for restructuring and aligning this sector and which can be a substantial value addition. I knew that it will be very difficult but had it been that easy I believe there would not have been any problems to solve. How can this software/app change this industry? Vaahika is not just a software or an app; it is honestly a Tech Enabled Operations Solution which focuses on bridging the demand & supply gap while bringing the required convenience and transparency in the system. We believe by brining this transparency in processes and efficiency in fleet management; Vaahika will actually change the way logistics work in India

As a startup, what problems did you face in the initial stages? Honestly a lot, and still today there are far off from being resolved completely. We were facing serious problems on hiring sector specific individuals, it is very difficult to find them. Also the expecations of youth in India are very high as far as infrastructure and working atmosphere is considered and we as a startup simply cannot afford it. We had to meet close to 180 aspirants to finalize on the first 4 of our company, and even today when we are sizable team as a startup; these issues still exist. Luckily we are yet to face problems of attrition which other startups are facing.

We are in the age of electronics, where everything is done using mobile apps, and websites. But still a large share of logistics is done by the traditional ways, and people choose logistics partners on the basis of goodwill and word of mouth, how do you think you can excel in such a market? Well there is a hidden answer in your question and that is something I shared earlier, We are not a software or an app company; we are a Tech Enabled Operations Solution and hence not only it gives us the agility to fit into the sector it also makes us swift enough to expand aggressively. What kind of services do you offer? Currently Vaahika is focused on providing tech enabled call free solution for shipping B2B Full Truck Loads. Vaahika assists its shippers with information on lowest freight solutions, organizing the fleet from the selected vendors, handhandling in bridging communication with transporters and then support on succeful pickup and delivery of shipment. On the other hand it assists transporters in booking return loads in advance, providing them with a pool of online loads for desitantions across country, help them keeping higher uptime for their fleet, diversify into new business routes and expanding their existing business. Why companies should chose you over the traditional ways of logistics? Who are your target clients? There are many a advnatages which users have while using Vaahika as a

We are an ops driven solution for which tech is an enabler thus either tech helps us sell our service proposition; if not tech then ops help us gain new business. gateway to select the best fit transporter; firstly it helps reduce their logistics bill, the process followed is very convenient and transparent, it becomes a single point solution for locating transporters for shipments across the country, its app and browser based access makes it a hassle free solution and above all there is no additional cost attached to it. So it is actually a highly profitable deal for the manufacturers which is nothing but partially outsourcing the logistics activity. According to a survey, only 30% of Indians use internet at present. then ops help us gain new business. There are other software that provide online logistics services, how would you differentiate yourself from others. We are not a software company and thus we are not competing them. Logistics could be a software driven market 2-3 years from now; but today it is not. Vaahika is a service based product which is using technology to derive results but its not the other way around; and hence considering todays ground realities in logistics sector; a hybrid such as a Vaahika is agile enough to generate sizable business. How do you think e-commerce has changed the Indian logistics? The process change and evolution is underway, a sizable long term changes are now visible especially in last mile delivery segment which has already seen a sea change in its approach and delivery; it is far more advance and cost efficient today as compared to what it used to be 5 years back. The first mile or long distance logistics has just entered the phase of evolution; we now see a large number of startups trying to solve the problems in intercity logistics space. I think it is just a matter 2-3 years; where in we will see entire logistics space getting restructured towards higher efficiency and more transparencey then to what we see today. Who are your biggest clients at present? Our biggest clients are Small and Medium Scale Wire, Plastic Pipes, Confectionnary, Chemical, Sheet Metal and Metal pipe manufacturers.

interview

Ashutosh Shrivastava Co - Founder & CEO - ShippingExchange Logistics is seen as an unorganized sector, what attracted you towards this sector? What was your motive behind bringing this platform? The very fact that logistics & particularly sea logistics, needs much more organizing despite being one of the largest industries in the world in itself was pretty attractive. I immediately fell for it. On further reasecrh when we found that online trade facilitation in sea logistics space is almost nonexistent, we started ShippingExchange without a second thought. Our business objective is two fold – Help exporters/importers get best sea freight & service terms for their cargo and help Shipping lines get higher volumes & healthier margins on their shipments. We bring the two on our online platform where they connect, negotiate and close deals with mimimum efforts & maximum transparency. A true Win-Win. How can this software/app change this industry? As of today, majority of the shipping business deals are done in the traditional way – phone calls, 1-on-1 meetings & emails followed by more meetings, more calls which consume a lot of time, energy & money of a Shipping Line. On the other side, exporters go thorugh same labor in order to solicit, negotiate & close freight deals to their satisfaction. Now, compare this to a scenario where soliciting business, negotiating rates & terms, furnishing documentation, closing deals – all is done through one single online platform. All an exporter needs to do is publish his requirement, compare rates/ terms offered by shipping lines & book his cargo with the one that suits him best. And all a Shipping line sales team needs to do is access ready business opportunities,

make best offers and win business. ShippingExchange.com facilitates exactly this. We are certain that in time to come, this would substantially change the way industry does business by bringing in highest levels of efficiency in the system by the use of technology. As a startup, what problems did you face in the initial stages? Besides the typical issues that every startup faces, the biggest problem we faced was in terms of making people, both exporters & service providers, believe that such a concept can work. While Service providers were reluctant to give out their rates in open market exporters found the thought of changing their logistics partner even though for better, little discomforting. We are in the age of electronics, where

everything is done using mobile apps, and websites. But still a large share of logistics is done by the traditional ways, and people choose logistics partners on the basis of goodwill and word of mouth, how do you think you can excel in such a market? On the supply side, we work with Shipping Lines which have international stature and follow best business practices. They have great goodwill in the market which adds to our credibility. Further, through our service quality & transparency, we are trying to become a name who businesses can trust without meeting in person. This is already happening in other sectors – today, you & I trust MakeMyTrip more than we trust some local travel agent & we are more comfortable ordering products from Amazon than buying them from some unknown store in the city. In shipping, we are aiming to command that level of trust of our customers. What kind of services do you offer & what are your plans for future? We are currently offering Marine transport

interview

freight aggregation, comparison & booking services to our customers. We are looking at providing similar marketplace services in Custom Clearance & Marine insurance domains as they are natural extension to our current services. Why companies should chose you over the traditional ways of logistics? Who are your target clients? In comparison to traditional ways of logistics, our services help businesses get better freight rates, broader options of service providers to choose from, absolute transparency in dealings & much higher levels of operational efficiency. Every business wants all of this, therefore, everyone is our target customer.

deal between the two parties without introducing them to each other until their revenue is secured. Also, we only have Shipping Lines (Vessel Operators) on the supply side and NOT mediators, therefore, dealing through ShippingExchange is lot more safe for exporters. Besides transparency & safety, we also differentiate ourselves on the basis of the quality of ouyr customer service and our technical expertise.

According to a survey, only 30% of Indians use internet at present. How efficient do you think your software can be in such a market? We have an edge here as all our customers are exporters or importers. Almost everyone of them today uses internet in the forms of emails, at least. Also, our portal is extremely easy to use. Everything one needs to do to procure freight quotes/ deals is available in one screen.

How do you think e-commerce has changed the Indian logistics?

25

E-commerce has empowered logistics as an industry while logistics has empowered e-commerce as a business. All the big boys of e-commerce now have their direct or indirect interests in logistics & prudently so, as logistics is going to be the game changer of e-commerce now. After the price war has been fought & everyone has lost, it's service that's going to decide who survives & eventually thrives and delivery, thus logistics, is going to drive this service experience. How many clients do you have presently & what is their size? We have more than 6500 exporters registered with us and we are adding up almost 60-70 every day. They are of all sizes – those with a movement of 300+ containers every month to those with one container a year.

There are other software that provide online logistics services, how would you differentiate yourself from others. So far there aren't many like ours who connect shippers directly with shipping lines. Most of our competitors operate with a model where they broker the

Currently the warehousing capacity gap estimated by the Planning Commission stands at 27 million MT. Also, insufficient and inefficient infrastructure has been a major drawback of the warehousing sector in India. While obtaining accreditation with WDRA, warehouse operators need to comply with the strict norms of accreditation.

It has been observed that the warehouse operators in the country have been putting in efforts to renovate their warehouses in such a way that it fits the accreditation criteria. Though WDRA has been operational from 2010, the number of accredited warehouses in the country was around 450-500 until 2014 and now around 1000,a fast track development by WDRA. However keeping in view numbers of more than 1lakh warehouses in India and approximately 30000- 40000 whs may get accreditation as the same may fit into the WDRA standards as most such godowns are constructed under some Govt schemes under rural godowns by

Warehousing Gaps NABARD or NCDC. One of the reasons for the slow progress in accreditation is the shortage of accreditation agencies registered with WDRA. A total of 16 agencies are registered with WDRA, of which only nine have been actively taking up the task of accreditation. If States amend their APMC Act to notify WDRA accredited warehouses as a component of the market yard, it is likely to result in demand for quality storage facilities. WDRA may need to register more accreditation agencies to speed up the process and ensure a surge in warehouses accredited across the nation. WDRA may also get the fee structure revised for Accreditation agencies to boost

India's Inland Waterways all set for Rapid Growth The development of Inland Waterways and logistics will be a major contributor in the economic growth India's economic growth is directly proportional to its logistics sector and now inland waterways where the government has also given the green signal. Many major cities are inseparably linked to the rivers and situated on their banks. According to the Inland Waterways Authority of India reports, Inland Waterways has become one of the key leaders in economic development. There are innumerable benefits that are attached to inland waterways that include cost effectiveness, fuel efficiency and are environmental friendly. Some of the key advantages that it has are low emissions, low energy consumption. Inland Water Transport (IWT) also has tremendous potential for cargo movement and tourism. The excellent environmental credentials, the high safety standards for shipments and the large carrying capacity of the vessels are just some of the outstanding features of this long standing mode of transport. India's inland waterways today still haven't reached its full capacity by any stretch of imagination. Today, private sector needs to chip in with investments for overcoming the hassles in IWT. If it has to emerge as vibrant and flourishing centres for fostering large scale cargo movements and commercial use, a number of steps need to be taken which also includes a strong logistics department to make that movement. There are a several business opportunities through which Inland

Mr. Brijesh Lohia Managing Director of Global Ocean Group Waterways can grow as a business that include cargo movement, dredging works, construction, operation and maintenance of terminals, barge constructions and operations, navigational aids and many more. For the inland waterways to be more

successful, the logistics need to be stronger at any given point of time. This aspect of IWT has to grow parallel to it, only then would India be able to sustain that economic growth coming from this sector.

Apollo is a globally known brand, what was the idea behind diversifying into Apollo LogiSolutions? AIL has been a frontrunner in its forte since the year 1994, the year of its inception. The very idea of creating and extending the Apollo group in 1994 into AIL was done keeping its long term dual goals in mind i.e. Internationalizing its core business and Diversification. Following these goals has led the Apollo group to where it is today. The early years of 2000 saw a great push led by the government encouraging private players to invest and explore business opportunities in varied sectors such as in Power, Aviation, Highways, and Telecom etc. Around that time, we examined the Indian market and role each sector plays in the overall growth story of the country. Interestingly, the logistics sector came out as the common factor linking all the dots in any business. We also compared the logistics business and how it is run in India versus global markets and realized there is a great scope to modernize the sector and be a significant contributor to the overall economy. Additionally, being in Apollo Tyres, our understanding and experienceof the supply chain &business operations helped us consider and enter the logistics sector with much confidenceand ability to be a differentiator and yet relevant in the market place. Apollo LogiSolutions, the brain child of Raaja Kanwar, was born with the aim to diversify in logistics sector. Apollo LogiSolutions created a buzz in the market with partnerships with Fiege. What is the importance of

How did you start your journey in Logistics sector, share your journey from scratch to the President of Apollo LogiSolutions. With a career of over 26 years, I have spent the last 19 years with the Apollo Group. Prior to ALS, I have been involved in the field of international trade of tyres and related products. Since my career began in this sector I formed strong networks with the international trading community. With 26 years that I have spent in this segment, I am now acquainted with the challenges that this field involves and its strategies. After pursuing a Masters in Industrial Engineering and Management from IIT Kharagpur, I started my career at Apollo as a Management Trainee. I followed the same old trick to reach at the position I am i.e. sheer hard work and leading fellow employees in the right manner. Here at ALS, the key focus has been in taking the company's operations on a larger canvas by establishing international alliances and acquisitions. I have been able to integrate my ideologies and approaches with the firms' vision and mission and extremely positive of ALS achieving exemplary success in times to come. ALS best recognizes its employees strengths and actualizes it. partnerships and joint ventures for Apollo LogiSolutions? We believe combiningforces with global partners for acquiring global reach, cutting edge technology and operational excellence through best practices, ultimately enables the company to emerge as a comprehensive solutions provider in the fragmented logistics industry. An international joint venture and partnership of an Indian logistics company with global players in the first few years of its establishment, we have successfully been able to build the assets across the logistics supply chain to meet the needs of its customers. In 2012, we entered into a joint venture with a leading German logistics company, FIEGE, to form APOLLO FIEGE Integrated Logistics (AFIL). The JV helped us strengthen our core competencies and provide strategic, end-to-end logistics solutions to customers. FIEGE brings with it 140 years of industry experience and a strong presence in 200 locations across 70 countries. The partnership has helped us expand our capabilities in Freight

Name few habits which you have adopted to be more successful in your life and business. Focus and concentration are two principles that I abide by. These are not habits but these two ideals help me sustain my habits. Focus is the most important ideal to be adopted in one's life and also professionally. Concentrate and put in your best in one task, and move on to next and focus on that too. Success is never too far then. Concentrate on what is in your plate give your best shot at every opportunity that comes your way. Aim once and aim hard, you will hit the target. If not, focus and focus again

Forwarding, Customs Brokerage, 3PL, 4PL, Warehousing, and Contract Logistics Services. In line with our plans, we have acquired Clarion shipping, Dubai which has presence in entire Middle East, parts of Africa, Singapore and Malaysia. Clarion is in the same business as Apollo Fiege and is a perfect for our growth. What are the biggest problems in this sector? What is Apollo LogiSolutions' approach to deal with problems? And what are the advantages? In India, the logistics industry is highly fragmented. The severe competition within creates two big challenges for any logistics firm, viz acceptability of clients and scalability. Lack of infrastructure is another huge hurdle that we face. The state of infrastructure in the country is poor and a big challenge currently. So much so that growth is deterred. Road conditions are bad, rail has not been upgraded significantly in a long time and sea and inland waterways are still underdeveloped. However, different aspects of the logistics industry fall under different ministries and this creates inefficiencies as well. An overarching body would be a big help. Newer technologies are being adopted by players in the field but the impact is not as great as it should be, given the fundamental infrastructure is weak. Over the longer term, investment will need to be made in automation while making the most of existing resources.

Today we have portfolio of 3 dry ports and worldwide presence for 3PL business. In next 2 years, we would like to create 3-4 more new dry ports and create an integration between our dry ports and 3PL business to provide seamless services to our existing customers and bring more customers who want one stop shop logistics solution. Apollo LogiSolutions is backed by the strong lineage of Apollo Group, providing quick acceptability from any client. Further, we have a strong support from our joint venture partners who are pioneers in this domain. They help us with new technology, skills and world class practices, to remain competitive in the market. Throw some light on the recent acquisition of Wifin Technologies, what are the future plans? Wifin Technologies is a Chennaibased boutique Mobile Products and Solutions company. Wifin has expertise in creating new generation technology solutions, mobile apps, augmented reality, integration etc. and is focused on mobile and web integrated products. The acquisition is a part of ALS's articulated growth strategy to enhance IT capabilities and be able to provide next generation technology based logistics solutions to the clients. The acquisition ensures that IT requirements of ourgroup companies and clients, like software applications & maintenance for Logistics related services, mobile application development and consulting advice on IT matters is provided in-house. The acquisition of the stakes of Wifin technologies has enabled Apollo to deliver its promises better and swifter. We have created another tangent with our clients apart from logistics only. In fact, logistics requires technology and innovation. We hope that our clientele sees this step as an attempt from our side towards leadership, progress and as an addition to our capabilities. What is the biggest source of inspiration and motivation for you? Who is your idol?

What would be the areas of opportunity for Logistics companies in the coming 5 years? We believe in paving Apollo's path on our own. Investment is where the logistics sector in India needs filtering and improvement and that is what we are focusing on too. We have shortlisted 3-4 locations in India where we will be investing, building and operating new dry ports. These dry ports will increase our operational capacity and will be operational by end of this year. Looking at the areas of opportunities from an industry standpoint, we believe the success of the initiatives such as 'Make in India' & 'Smart Cities' depends fundamentally on the logistics sector.Irrespective of whether a specific good features upstream or downstream in the overall supply chain, only logistics connectivity moves it to the next facility in the chain. The trade logistics network forms the backbone of modern supra-national supply chains.Additionally, the growth of e-commerce sector shifts the entire focus on logistics as one of its key growth drivers and supporters. This is another area where we have planned out our way for at least the coming years. My long working association with the Apollo Group has played a great role in shaping my work style and ideology. I have seen and experienced the groups' growth as close as one could have imagined for. One of the biggest source of inspiration

as well as motivation for me has always been my father. He is a great scientist, philosopher and a visionary who believes in putting passion and heart to every task he takes and owning it completely. I really owe my success to him for being a great mentor and encouraging me to take on challenging roles in my life. What type of Solutions do you offer? How do you stand out in such a fragmented market? Logistics sector is very wide in scope and it is difficult for any logistics firm to provide an integrated solution to its clients. There are firms that specialize in certain parts of supply chain, like transportation, Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC), dry ports, warehousing, etc. However, there are very few who can provide an end-to-end solution. One of the biggest challenges our sector deals with is the lack of understanding of the role and value a logistics player can bring to a business. Even today, most of the Indian corporates have different departments to handle multiple role and responsibilities of its supply chain operations such as exports, imports, transportation, warehousing, etc. This adds up to the overall operational and business cost with performance and return on investment being elements of concern with almost every corporate.Furthermore, in India almost 90% of the logistics firms

are unorganized, with limited corporate history, low creditability, without standard processes and practices, and limited capital to scale. We entered the market place with a strong belief and agenda to change how supply chain and logistics management is done in our country. We are an integrated end to end logistics solutions provider with a strong inheritance of Apollo Group's ethics and values, professionalism, corporatization and partnerships with global players, providing scalability and best-in-class processes. Our vantage point not only gives us a great view of and insight into what the industry needs right now, it also helps us predict the future requirements of the industry correctly. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your services to the clients at present? Our ability to provide a seamless and an end to end integrated logistics solutions to our clients differentiates us from our competitors.Company's mission statement beautifully defines the business strengths we are extremely proud of professional, people centric, integrated supply chain solution specialist with global presence, and a strong brand lineage. Realizing our core strengths and working hard each day to deliver the best of our capability makes us the first choice in the market place. Where do you see a scope of improvement in your services, what would help you to provide better services to clients? ALS recognized a need for integration with a foreign leading logistics firm to better its services and diversify, thus following the

33

Would you like to make any announcement for upcoming events, or plans? As I mentioned earlier, we have shortlisted 3-4 locations to expand our CFS business. As we speak now, 2 locations i.e. Kattupally and Tuticorin have started construction. We expect these locations to be live and operational during the current financial year. Our biggest focus during the year will be on expanding and improving our 3PL services. During the last three years we have created mammoth infrastructure i.e. 100 countries network, branches, offices in overseas locations, IT infrastructure, manpower etc. It will be challenging year to leverage and integrate all these independent dots to create a beautiful picture for long term sustainable growth. To be a successful logistics provider one needs to excel in its service offerings. We recently kick started the Apollo Business Excellence Program that will help us challenge our systems, processes and procedures for good. It gives me immense pride to announce that we are India's first logistics company to have decided to walk on such an important journey which will create culture of excellence for perpetuity.

group's core ideals. Buying of stakes in Wifin has been another area, I.T, where ALS was not working and soon we realized how our clients would benefit from an acquisition as this. As a leader, I reckon that the firm needs to recognize the need gap between what we have to offer and what satisfies our clients' profile. The only thing that would help ALS to provide better services to clients would be, step #1 Understanding the needs of our market base; step #2 drawing the path to deliver; step #3 spot on delivery to our client base. The minute a service provider understands the needs and wants of its customers, actualizing it becomes a far easier task and ultimately drives customer satisfaction and business excellence. We have started a program where we

unite people to interact and discuss about Logistics. Would you like to ask a question to the Industry? As professionals in the logistics industry, we understand the challenges that the industry faces. Each logistics firms faces very similar challenges although at a degree higher or lower than others. I believe, all the major players in the logistics business should come together and collectively raise concerns over key matters like Infrastructure which happens to be one of the biggest challenges faced by the Indian logistics sector and has been a major deterrent to its growth. Issues such as bad road conditions, poor connectivity, inadequate air and sea port capacities and lack of development of modes of transports like railways and alternates like inland water transport and domestic aviation have been constant irritants. This further contributes to the increase in cost per transaction in Indian logistics sector as compared to those in the developed markets. There is only so much that the government understands the real and underlying problems of this industry. And, pressing for common goals and issues may lead to an effective solution, for all.

Your guide to choosing the best Warehouse Management System We, Logistics Reckoner, have been receiving a lot of queries on different Warehousing Management System, seeking how efficient a system is and how one is better than another. So we decided to collect the parameters we go through and make a guide for our readers to pick and choose the best warehousing management system according to their needs.

logistics reckoner i june, 2016

Many of new and budding warehouses often ask us about the usage and importance of warehouse management systems. The name explains the basics that it helps in warehouse management but what exactly is the need of such system? To answer it in a blink, a good WMS will provide a boost in customer service, and it will lead to greater customer satisfaction and increased profitability. Customer is the king in business, and a sure shot key to success is a satisfied customer. On the other hand, not having a good WMS will end up with constant struggles, confusion, and chaos. So, what should you look for in a good warehouse management system? Here are 9 qualities that a good WMS should have.

1) Functionality The idea of going for a WMS is generated when there is something you want to get done. So while choosing the WMS, one should see that the system is able to satisfy the required needs. One should see that it is doing what one wants. One should ask himself that if this WMS can streamline the business processes. For example, if you want to keep a track of your employees' productivity you should see that the EMS is able to track what tasks an employee has performed, locations of the tasks performed, giving you direct visibility your workforce's efficiency. The takeaway from this particular point

feature

35

is that a good WMS maximizes the things it can do for you while minimizing the work on your end. To conclude, if the WMS solution is able to do more with less then it can be considered a good candidate.

2) User friendly

New systems require training which can be time-consuming, and costly. But if a WMS is user friendly, it will reduce the amount of time employees spend on training. A welldesigned WMS lets users spend less time setting up and monitoring daily operations, so they are able to quickly adapt to new requirements. A good system should be able to do a lot of things, but it should be very easy to use. A system that has functionality similar to technologies already used by majority of people will be easier to use than that which requires a completely new command set. When choosing a WMS, look for easy to follow menus and help screens that can improve usability. For example, make sure the WMS allows for simplified data entry and creation of template reports and charts. Similarly, a dashboard view (which automatically updates in real-time) provides users with a single location to access all of their most critical data.

3) Tracking every step A decent WMS will let you accomplish everything from door to door – from receiving to manifesting. One should look for a WMS that gives detailed information for everything – products, employees, and transactions – every step of the way. To clear the air further, here is a list of minimal things any WMS should cover: When you can track everything that is going on in your warehouse you can do specialized analysis that will help you hire smarter and stock products more efficiently.

4) Long term A WMS solution should be able to keep up with the changing times, company's growth and other predictable issues. It should be designed with keeping future requirements in mind. You can start this research by finding out if a WMS works with the majority of ERPs (Enterprise resource planning) because you might change ERP systems when your company's expansions. It is crucial to know that your WMS will be able to work with other ERPs. Another consideration is if the WMS is built around an open architecture. Finally, how flexible is your potential WMS when it comes to different business

types and sizes? A good WMS should have demonstrable success with wholesale and industrial distributors of all sizes.

5) Presentable Presentation of data makes a huge difference. The system should curate the data in such a way that it is easy to grasp. One should be able to understand the data in seconds. Using charts, graphs and whatever one is comfortable with is a good option. A good WMS should allow you to easily create reports and charts that let you see how your warehouse is running. You want to invest in a WMS that measures the performance of individual employees against standards that include both speed and accuracy. The question to be asked here would be 'Does this WMS give me warehouse metrics that I can use and understand? Can I set new business goals based on these metrics?'

6) ERP compatibility The WMS you choose will have to work in tandem with your ERP to keep a business running. That's what makes it important that you choose a WMS that works with major ERP systems impeccably. You should invest in WMS with ERP compatibility in mind. To get an idea one can ask if the WMS is compatible

36

feature

with famous ERPs like Activant, Infor, JD Edwards, MS Dynamics or Oracle's business solutions. In addition, a WMS vendor should be skilled at developing additional ERP integrations.

7) Words of experience. Asking a vendor about shortcomings in his product is useless. To find out how a WMS actually works one should do a market research and ask from actual users of the product. The ones who have used it overtime can guide you better than any website or book. However, one must not blindly trust a single user as well, because the feedback would vary from person to person and company to company. The ideal user would be someone who has similar company and working style as yours. One should ask the user if the WMS was up to his expectations, what kind of customer support is available, and how would the user rate the support they receive? How was the follow up? Etc.

8) Returns of Investment One must not be lured by low price of the WMS. It should not be seen as an expense, but it should be seen as an investment. One should weigh down elements like functionality, flexibility, integration, scalability, ease of use, customer support etc. It is said that a poorly chosen WMS can end up costing you more than it saves. Not only it will consume money to deal with the problems one face, it will also waste a lot of time as well.

9) Warehousing and Logistics dedicated Last but in no terms the least, the WMS should be dedicatedly designed for

logistics reckoner i june, 2016

Logistics and Warehousing. If this condition is not met, the system will be a complete unfit in the organization. A good WMS should be just as adept at doing core things like receiving and order picking as handling comprehensive solutions (like manifesting, paperless picking across multiple zones, truck route/ stop management or exotic lot number control). With these 9 pointers checked, one should be able to pick the most adapt WMS that will help the company excel and grow.

Akash Agarwal CEO, Crystal Logistic Cool Chain 1.What do you think about current scenario of warehousing in India? Warehousing in India is in an evolutionary stage. We are currently seeing a lot of transformation in this space, i.e there is an upcoming influx of sophisticated, technologically driven facilities. 2. Tell us something about the functionality of your company. Our company is logistics service provider specializing in cold chain,

If you don't use a WMS, then What is the reason behind not using WMS? Do you see WMS as necessity, or luxury? 12.How important is technology for warehousing? Technology is the key to managing effective supply chains and warehousing. It is helping in overcoming lots of challenges posed by the current ground realities. It helps in increasing efficiency, accuracy and brings transparency in the entire process. 13.What other technologies do you use? We have successfully applied multiple technologies in our processes. Such as handheld terminals to manage receipts, dispatches and order picking, barcodding for effective tracking and tracing of material, modern racking and material handling equipment for optimal space utilization.

i.e logistics of temperature sensitive perishable cargo. We function in 3 verticals namely transportation, warehousing and portable storage solutions. We operate on a pan India network. 3. What types of warehousing do you offer? Give a brief introduction about it. We own and operate state of art, technologically driven warehouse facilities. Our facilities are equipped with modern racking system, material handling equipment and best in class refrigeration and insulation products. We offer complete range of warehousing services for food and pharmaceutical products. We offer warehousing across multiple temperature zones for different products namely, frozen (-18 to -22 Degree C), chilled (2 to 8 Degree C), controlled ambient (15 to 25 Degree C) and ambient (where no temperature control is required). We also offer packing, repacking, bulk breaking, shrink wrapping and other value added services as per customer's requirement. 4. What are the major problems in warehousing? Major problems in warehousing, like any other industry are high real estate and capital costs, complex taxation structure which causes requirement for multiple small warehouses in each state, lack of skilled manpower, high costs and unstable power conditions. 5. What are the major factors of change in

warehousing business? Its said, 'necessity is mother of all inventions'. The major factor for change in warehousing business is driven by the ever changing nature of supply chain needs of customers. To cater to today's complexed supply chain requirements it is imperative for service providers to upgrade their offerings driven by technology, better infrastructure and innovative ideas. GST would also be one of the major drivers of change in modern warehousing, as that would eliminate the need for smaller distribution centresenabling companies to operate from mother hubs. Larger hubs help bring in sophistication in the process, reduce control points and create economies of scale. 6. What do you think about the future of Warehousing? We believe warehousing industry has enormous potential. The continually changing and complexed nature of supply chain are driving demand for more sophisticated, lean and agile logistics solutions. 7. What are the future plans of your company? Our company's plan to create a network of state of art warehousing services across the country. relatively smaller. 8. How do you think warehouses have evolved? Warehousing industry is in an evolutionary stage, transcending from traditional infrastructure, modus operandi to modern technology and innovation driven systems. There is an upcoming trend of end to end logistics solutions which is bringing forth facilities to offer high quality warehousing services along side many value added services which are required by customers and transportation facilities. 9. What is the importance of Warehouse Management Systems? Very! It is imperative to have a sophisticated WMS to ensure seamless flow of information between all stakeholders. Also, a WMS is required to maintain data integrity and visbility which inturn ensures delivery of right goods, at right time and at right place. 10. Do you use a WMS? If Yes then: Yes Which WMS do you use? Are you satisfied with the system? If yes, then please mention few good things about the product; if not then mention the shortcomings. We use proZeD WMS by Meibach consulting. Yes we are quite satisfied by the system. The system offers range of services to manage multiple formats of warehousing along with options for customization to suit one's requirement. 11.Why did you choose the WMS you use? What were the features you were looking for? Is your WMS compatible with your ERP? Synergy! We spent considerable amount of time looking for the right product which would suit our specific requirements. Also we wanted the software to be able to manage other formats of warehousing business which could be required in the future. Additionally, the WMS needed to be scalable to ensure that as we grow the software and processes grow along with us.

Warehouses to be wellpreserved as Revenue producing sources Still today people's mind-set has freeze warehouses as cost centre. And, now Time has come to change our thought process, a change to our beliefs that we can improve, we can make all warehouse units as profit centre ones.. It's an equation of retaining of more money from previous time i.e. in case you are saving One rupee in your warehousing operational overhead expenses then you are locating One rupee profit into your basket. Retention of money can be converted into profit in many ways reliantly how we are efficiently utilizing capacity in distribution, moving Inventory rapidly to avoid cash blockage, bringing accuracy level in order fulfilment, clear visibility of Inventory in warehouse centres through competent WMS radical system and smart working Since, we have already observed in last few years on the series of changes in manufacturing & distribution to adopt new set of trend in warehousing management. The major driving forces which will influence warehousing industry in 2016 are basically depended on the below three things.

Re-gearing up the Technology revolution in Warehousing:

It's all about the restructuring of the advanced technology to operate and smother the entire operations with higher efficacy level, less time & cost involvement and more focussed optimized way out to be driven more sophistically, remotely controlled through Cloud based technology which experts were working on for last couple of years to bring into

shape and visibility to create a new yardstick in managing warehouses. Logistics Executives are initiating to adopt the clouds & GPS for increasing tractability; it's a ligature between manufacturing & warehouse operations which has now become a serious practice of several manufacturers for openhanded experience on Cloud as test run for obtaining clear and larger prominence in complete operations to support faster decision making process in business. Not only this the algorithm of Supply Chain software is also going through major changes to redefine the planning process of entire business setup, and certainly this will have a major impact on the way we are doing the warehousing today.

Vibrant Warehouse Network:

by reducing unnecessary involvement in operations.

cost

So, now, question is what makes these three things effective in 2016 One, we need to rethink the reconstructions of technology which have direct impacts on bottom line of business in creating prospects for revenue generations. Second, we need to flexible with our promptness and need to be more responsive to understand the change of Customer needs and suffice those needs at satisfactory level. Lastly, we need to work continuous on new technological changes to adopt opportunities, new ideas frequently, new process come out from new thinking and be a part of the new warehouse process for development of our Organization.

think on Distribution to create vibrant and pulsating Warehouse Network to fulfilling the genuine needs of business today, as it's a simple mantra for winning and keeping valued Customers. One of the key strategies includes and enables us to make a pop-up distribution centre to fulfil all the customer needs on perfect time without any delay and supporting business growth vertically. Once major Inventory moved out then remaining part of inventory can be re-stacked in full – time Warehouse Inventory sets to sustain clean warehouse management. For this, one must re-evaluate the capacity, ROI and other re-assumption factors which create impact in efficacy and accuracy level enabling progress in business.

The transport sector constitutes 6% of the country's GDP and 70% of the share of the roads sector – More than 60% of freight traffic in the country is handled by road – The rise in increasing freight traffic and strong trade flows between states are all set to augment growth – Road infrastructure is a key government priority and the sector has received strong budgetary support over the years. With the brighter future also comes the challenges of securing the muchanticipated manufacturing sector and the key to the success of manufacturing is the SECURED Supply Chain eco-system.

Today's supply chains are longer and more complex than ever before, and they contain a huge range of risks. As supply chains continue to grow, visibility decreases leaving your supply chain vulnerable. It is estimated that the combined losses from the Global Supply Chain theft of commercial vehicles and their loads costs businesses over USD 13 billion a year, and it is estimatedthat the true cost of cargo + freight crime to be as much as twice the value of the stolen goods. Aside from the financial cost of recovery, for manufacturers and their logistics partners these crimes affect their ability to fulfill customer orders, damage their reputation, disrupt production schedules and lead to increased insurance premiums. The security of your supply chain is vital to ensure the integrity of

An Indian touch to global aerospace firms Aerospace and defence firms in India are helping aircraft-makers in developed countries to cut costs. Even as the US fighter jet-makers Lockheed Martin and Boeing have expressed interest to set up manufacturing facilities in India, several other aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus and

Bombardier have made Indian companies part of their global supply chains. Earlier this month, Lockheed Martin and Boeing met Defence Ministry officials to discuss the possible production of F-16 Super Viper and FA-18 Super Hornet fighter jets in India. Lockheed Martin's largest programme, the C-130J Super Hercules, a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft, already has an Indian touch. Phil Shaw, Chief Executive for Lockheed Martin India, said the C-130J Super Hercules was the first major military contract between the US and India. Shaw said that 'Now, all C-130Js produced have major elements manufactured in India.' Component manufacturing appears to be the new mantra for Indian companies. Tata Advanced Material Limited (TAML) bagging an extended 10-year agreement with Austria firm FACC Operation, for the supply of Rolls-Royce engine components is a case in point.

Railway to lay 20-km long test track for trial run of highspeed trains Suresh Prabhu says: Railways to form joint venture with Karnataka govt. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has said, the Railways will form a joint venture company with the Karnataka government in three months. Stating that this will help develop rail infrastructure projects in the State, the Railways needs small and medium enterprises to supply components to it. He was addressing the valedictory of the platinum jubilee celebrations of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Monday. Highlighting the role of infrastructure development in the growth story, Prabhu said the Railways has been investing heavily in infrastructure projects such as track development, hi-speed rail line, and dedicated freight corridor. Two of the major international companies have been given the task of making electric and diesel locomotives for the Railways. Stressing on the need to explore the potential of the west coast of the country, he said organisations such as KCCI should come forward and work with the Railways to explore this potential.

In a first for Indian Railway, the public sector transporter is laying a 20 kilometer (km) long test track, equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory, near Raipur for trial of high-speed and regular trains it plans to introduce. Besides new locomotives and coaches, the test track will also be used for trial of high axle load wagons. Currently, the trial of new trains are conducted on the existing rail network causing traffic delays, said a senior Railway Ministry official, adding the tracks are not equipped to help simulation of all test conditions. new trains in countries, including the US, Japan and South Korea. In India, a section of the railway network is cordoned off and no train movement is allowed whenever a new train is put on trial run, causing traffic diversion and delay in operations. The 20 km test track, including a 5 km loop line, will be developed at an estimated cost of about INR 100 crore. The need for a test track for expeditious trial of prototypes under varying conditions has been felt for long, the official said, adding, it will go a long way in enhancing the research and development capabilities of railways.

Railways to spend INR 80,000 cr in laying track in next 3 years and has directed that the concerned officials to continue to run the trains till the time there is a need of water and the settlement of the operational expenses will never be a constraint in this regard, according to the statement by railways. Till now more than 6 crore litres of water has been transported by the railways from Miraj to Latur. Railways named these trains as 'Jaldoot' to emphasize importance of this crucial endeavour. Recently the Latur district administration requested Central Railway administration to indicate the cost of water transportation by railways. In response to this request, Central Railway shared the information on cost of operation in transporting the water, according to railways. The statement added, the settlement of expenditure is not relevant at this point of time as the most important matter is to continue uninterruptedly with the transportation of water to the people in their hour of need.

Railways discontinued dual freight policy for iron ore The ministry of railways has finally yielded to industry's demand and discontinued the dual freight policy for transportation of iron ore and iron ore pellets. This policy came into effect from Tuesday. The decision, that is likely to result in a boost in the movement of iron ore, was hailed not only by trade and industry but zonal railways as well. Under the dual freight policy, transportation costs for iron ore or iron ore pellets meant for export were higher than that for loads meant for domestic use. This had resulted in a scam with several unscrupulous traders diverting stocks marked for the domestic market to ports for export.

Railways will increase the pace of laying new track to 19 kilometer (km) per day from the current 7.8 km which will likely generate INR 80,000 crore business in the procurement of cement, steel and cable among others in the next 3 years. Besides, the Railways will use drones to monitor the progress of the track laying work. 'Currently, we are laying 7.8 km track per day and it will go up to 13 km per day next year. Our target is to reach 19 km per day in the fiscal 2018-19,' Railway Board Member (Engineering) VK Gupta said here today. He said that expansion of rail network is a major thrust for Railways as the public transporter is facing an acute congestion

There will be total 2,900 km of track in the current year and it involves gauge conversion, doubling and also laying new rail connecting new areas, he said. The capacity augmentation exercise also aims to boost the economy as it involves procurement of rail, cement, steel, engineering and signalling equipment. Railways will be investing about INR 80,000 crore in procurement of various ingredients like cement, steel, rail the next three years for laying tracks which will be a boost to the economy, he said.

Paul Antony steps down as Chairman, ChPT Paul Antony, Chairman, Cochin Port Trust (ChPT), stepped down on Monday (May 16) after completing his tenure of five years and three months. During his stint at the helm, the cashstarved port registered an operating surplus of INR 70 crore in 2015-16, the highest since 1979-80. The Vallarpadam Transhipment Terminal displayed a tremendous performance, crossing the 4-lakh Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) mark in FY16, and 40,000 TEU in a month in April, both a first. He said restricting the maintenance dredging expenditure to below INR 100 crore in FY16 was a notable achievement. This had enabled anchoring of more than 10 ships of 14.5 metre draft at the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam. During this period, work started on the INR 970-crore international ship repair facility with Cochin Shipyard at the Mattancherry Wharf and a INR 240-crore Multi User Liquid Terminal with 4.1 MMTPA capacity in association with Indian Oil Corporation at Puthuvypeen. The Port Trust itself went through radical internal transformation, with ERP being firmly established in all aspects of the port's working. During the period, the port also went through a period of tough austerity measures. Benefits of employees and pensioners were restricted to a few months, but they managed to come out stronger with the cooperation of the employees and unions. The port was also able to pay arrears to its employees, he said.

1. What do you think about the ambitious Bharatmala project? It is a very ambitious project and had been long overdue. We are very glad that such progressive thinking is happening within the country. I think this will lead to good development along the coast. The slogan of port development leading on to port led development is very apt. This will help us leverage the phenomenal maritime asset in our coastline. 2. What will be its impact on the Indian markets? This will certainly lead to better conditions for trade. Moreover, the development in coastal area will lead to more job opportunities and better human resource development. 3. What will be its impact on trade between states involved?

Clearly with such drastic improvement in infrastructure the trade volumes will grow and there is every chance that the cargo that doesn't touch our shores today can come to our shores leading in increased cargo handling. 4. Do you see it as an opportunity for your company anyhow? The project to be successful will need good digital infrastructure and we see ourselves contributing to the same given our vast experience in trade facilitation using technology. 5. According to you, what could be done to make this project better? As I said this is a good infrastructure project but for it to be successful we need good digital / IT infrastructure as well and the focus has to be given to that area as well.

Roads: An Anthropology of Infrastructure and Expertise Roads matter to people. This claim is central to the work of Penny Harvey and Hannah Knox, who in this book use the example of highway building in South America to explore what large public infrastructural projects can tell us about contemporary state formation, social relations, and emerging political economies. Roads focuses on two main sites: the interoceanic highway currently under construction between Brazil and Peru, a major public/private collaboration that is being realized within new, internationally ratified regulatory standards; and a recently completed one-hundred-kilometer stretch of highway between Iquitos, the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon, and a small town called Nauta, one of the earliest colonial settlements in the Amazon. The Iquitos-Nauta highway is one of the most expensive roads per kilometer on the planet. Combining ethnographic and historical research, Harvey and Knox shed light on the work of engineers and scientists, bureaucrats and construction company officials. They describe how local populations anticipated each of the road projects, even getting deeply involved in questions of exact routing as worries arose that the road would benefit some more than others.

Storage and Handling of Hazardous Materials This document serves as a sources of technical know-how regarding the management of hazardous materials, especially for warehouse personnel. For this reason it touches on a number of topics, such as transportation and safety and health, that are covered in other DoD documents. For these areas it is a source of information for knowledge and general awareness to assist these personnel in performing their jobs more effectively and is not intended to replace or supersede pertinent DoD documents.
