ogistics is all about movement; movement of goods from one place to another; movement via air, surface, railways, and roads. It is the movement because of which we can enjoy facilities like goods which are manufactured all around the globe. But unfortunately, this movement is heavily obstructed by jams in our country; this is the issue we are trying to bring into spotlight with month. Traffic is an age old problem in India, it is hard to imagine roads without traffic, and calculating traffic time is a practice that we have adapted in our day to day life. Especially in Logistics sector, where being on time is considered a huge trait, we have to take measures to fight this transport evil. April proved to be quite an eventful month, with well-being of Logistics sector in focus. We saw one of the grandest events in this sector – The Maritime India Summit 2016. The event was honored with the presence of dignitaries like the Hon. Prime Minister – Mr. Narendra Modi, our very own Transport Minister – Mr. NitinGadkari, Minister of Home Affairs – Mr. Rajnath Singh and numerous giants of the industry. Logistics Reckoner had the privilege to attend the event and it was outstanding. Another such event for which we are eagerly waiting for is the India Logistics Expo 2016 – Robust Logistics to enable ‘Make in India’ , scheduled on 19th, 20th,

tuck In Traffic Jams Cities with high population often faces traffic problem. Never-ending queues of vehicles makes us wait for hours to cover a distance of few kilometers. And with thousands of kilometers of roadlines, this becomes a major concern for the country. Traffic is the arched enemy of highways, and there are many reasons behind this, such as: l Poor condition of roads. l More vehicles at a time on roads. l Merging of wide roads with narrow ones. l Several roads merging into highways. l Vehicle problems on road.

This is something we all are aware of, but this problem stands tall in our face. These problems are not new, we have known them since we were kids, but knowing a problem does not decrease the seriousness of the issue. Knowing a problem does not solve it, it even makes it worse that we cannot do anything even when we know what the problem is. This

is not to inform you about the problems; it is to remind you that these problems are still there as we dream to grow, to be a developed country. What will shock you further is that Delhi High Court has also said we may need helicopters to fight against this traffic problem. The respected court has asked several questions like what will a person do if he is in emergency situation. The court has also questioned that if apps like Google Maps can provide the live traffic information so why can't we use such technologies to fight traffic problems. There are no answers to these questions yet. The question is why aren't we putting technology to work to fight against traffic? We desperately need a service lane on highways, until then the problem cannot be solved. Road designing also plays a vital role when it comes to smooth traffic. Because of toll system and Octroi systems trucks have to stop again and again. This leads to wastage of fuel, and at the places where these trucks are forced to stop they don't have any facility. We have researched about how much this traffic

problem cost to us. The traffic problem leaves no one, whichever city you may be in, you must have faced losses because of traffic. l Traffic Jams cause losses worth Rs.60,000Crore per year! l On 17 of the major truck routes, the average fuel mileage is mere 3.96 per kilometer. l Traffic Jams cause losses worth Rs.10 Crore per day to cities. l Govt faces loss of Rs. 1.5 Crore every day because of this traffic problem. l Nearly 30 lakh liter of fuel gets waste every day. l An average person wastes 90 minutes per day due to traffic, which adds up to 32,850 minutes per year. If a person lives for an average 60 years then 1380 days, or nearly 4 years are wasted in traffic jams. l We often hear that traffic is caused because there are more cars in Delhi etc. But if there are more cars, the length of roads is also high. - Delhi: Road length consists about 20% of area. - Mumbai: 12% of total area. - Other Metro cities: 10% of area. l Nearly 20% of fuel is wasted because of

vehicles getting stuck at one place. For instance, if a petrol car runs on average of 15 kilometer per liter, then a journey of 20 kms will cost a person Rs.89 (approx.) without traffic, but traffic makes that amount to Rs.107. That is Rs. 18 more

logistics reckoner i may, 2016

than what it actually should be. If a person wastes Rs. 18 six days a week then it costs Rs.432 more a week, and Rs. 5000 per year. This calculation is done with keeping everything at minimum, We can surely say that the amount is many times more than this number. This jam not only affects your pockets, but it also affects your mind and body. At many places, 6 lane roads are cut down to 2 lane roads, and we often see traffic signals malfunctioning. We often see people taking short-cuts and not following traffic rules to get somewhere faster. We have failed completely at managing traffic because we are still using old ways to control traffic. Traffic Jams not only wastes time, but stopping again and again wastes a lot of fuel too. This cause pollution, raises tension. Hence, it is important to implement traffic engineers, and transport management to solve this problem.

TAT-Turnaround time gets Haywire due to traffic problem. At any given point of time when trucks are moving 24*7 , the speeding vehicle & Transit time are directly proportional to each other so as customer commitment can be achieved . On road, traffic congestion is in form of normal city traffic, various check post where documents are checked & endorsed by RTO/STO, often stops the vehicle for a longer time. Greasing the palms on pretext of some issue with documents, waybill, certain state forms, invoicing often put cog in running wheel Today in this competitive market when Time to Market & Cost to Market is of utmost importance, such challenges create impediments in fulfilling the commitment. The barometer of logistics excellence much depend on smooth traffic conditions and seamless movement of vehicles on Road, For Eg if we take of Maruti Suzuki where any single minute is important to achieve the target of minimum no of cars production for any day, from a small spare part to FG-Coils, each and every component is important from manufacturing to assembly line, car production. Logistics sector which is fulfilling this Demand & supply axiom plays a pivotal role in minimizing the gap and maximizing the efficiency, both directly & indirectly. From Plant to reaching the end customer for consumption, smooth traffic is must. Better traffic controls, Worthy Roads, More skill set in fulfilling documentation / papers & online clearance of waybills, Taxes will help to avoid such traffic nuisance so as seamless & committed deliveries can happen.

Some of the causes/concerns of the traffic problems are 1) Narrow Roads and no effort on widening the roads 'Multilane roads should be built to improve the speed and avoiding any traffic jams. Roads were built many decades before when there were no such population challenges/No. of vechiles on road but when the traffic has gone-up Multi-fold efforts/plans should be taken up in that direction. 2) Too many junctions, X-roads that slows down the traffic. Consignments get delayed sometimes due to traffic diversions' Have flyovers at such places, which are the major bottlenecks for traffic congestion. 3) Incase of any breakdown on the road, vehicle remains there on road impacting the traffic flows' 24x7 mobile service stations to be available that can reach the spot in 15-30mins. 4) Roads to be expanded wherever the traffic congestions are likely to occur.

These are the places where most of the accidents happen, people lose life and incases of vehicle accident loss of value/material 'Govt to also pull down the shops/buildings who have encroached the roads 5) Avoiding agitations or taking processions on the road leads to major

Traffic congestion at Ports The traffic problem is not just limited to highways and roads that we use daily. This problem has reached the roots and it has become unavoidable. Every sector of the industry is facing the brunt of this traffic problem, even ports too. Ports are huge and the large number of trucks loads and unloads at ports. We have seen that roads connecting ports from cities are generally wider on the port end and narrower on the outside area. This is a major cause of congestion at ports. Roads connecting to Ports should be made wider, and quality should be maintained to avoid traffic atrocities. Ports continuously face delays in export as a result of infrastructure problems. Traffic is constantly rising

in major ports and that is one of the biggest issues here. Lack of proper infrastructure is one of the main reasons behind this and this has delayed the speed of growth and development here.

traffic chaos 'Govt to implement strict laws against any group or individual who intends to block the roads for any bandh/agitations etc (During the last agitations in Haryana, many supplies to Northern part were effected incl. essential medicines) 6) Maintaining proper conditions of the roads. Bad roads leads to delays, wastage of time due to slow-traffic, wastage of fuel & increase in vehicle pollution leading to Global warming etc, damage to vehicles etc ' Regular checks/ repairs of Roads to be undertaken to avoid any traffic hassles. 7) Because of uncertainty of time duration, (delivery lead-time) for the traffic reasons mention above, one is not able to plan his Manufacturing/production, sometimes production Stoppages due to late arrival of goods, one also buildsup high inventory which sometimes leads to idle inventory.

ASHISH PADNEKAR: President, BCHAA

Some locals have been taking some advantage. But mostly I have seen people paying making some unrequired expenses for gratification because of the long queues. People want to jump the queues and get their work done as fast as they can, and they are ready to pay for it. Everybody is worried about their cargo not being shut out. Everything will be sorted once the infrastructure in and around the port is improved. There are some age old problems in the JNPT port. There are no facilities for truck drivers. There is no proper parking and it is high time now that it gets sorted.

I would like to talk about JNPT Port here. There is an alarming issue which is being neglected for ages. There is a single bridge to connect JNPT Port with all the CFS, andthat too in such a dilapidated condition that it can break down anytime and there is no substitute for that bridge. Once it is down, the whole port will be shut because there won't be any connectivity. It will hinder the movement of containers. And that too it is just a two lane bridge, handling the entire load.

We have grown in all aspects since then. Starting from a transport company today we are an Integrated Logistics Service & Solution Provider offering complete gamut of services through captive resources and capabilities. 2. Academically, what did you do to be successful in Logistics? I have done my graduation in Commerce from Sydenham College, Mumbai University. Most of the knowledge on logistics has been acquired hands-on and through extensive travel locally and globally and through various partnerships and Joint Ventures which we have forged over the years. 3.How Rhenus was started? Please share the success story from a start-up to a magnanimous company. Rhenus is a 100+ year old company. The Indian arm for Rhenus Logistics is involved in providing Integrated Logistics Services including International Freight, Domestic Freight, Customs Brokerage, Warehousing & Distribution and other Value Added Services. 4.Logistics is generally seen as a male dominated industry. What do you think is the reason behind this? What do you think should be done to encourage females to enter this industry? Logistics business is perceived to be laborious and for the rough and toughs. Being male dominated, it is perceived not very conducive for women workers.

interview

Logistics is generally seen as a male dominated industry. What do you think is the reason behind this? What do you think should be done to encourage females to enter this industry? Logistics business is perceived to be laborious and for the rough and toughs. Being male dominated, it is perceived not very conducive for women workers. Long working hours and off beat working hours due to the operational demands of business also proves to be a setback. This industry also lacks good HR practices and well defined policies like Maternity leave, etc are not in place.

Long working hours and off beat working hours due to the operational demands of business also proves to be a setback. This industry also lacks good HR practices and well defined policies like Maternity leave, etc are not in place. To attract more women to this industry one must provide good infrastructure like office, working space, etc. This industry needs to gain credibility to attract women workers. It is important to spread the message that many executive functions and other opportunities are available in the logistics business. India Inc has been stepping up efforts to bridge the gap in the current ratio by implementing progressive policies and creating innovative solutions to hire, retain and encourage women talent. Diversity challenges homogeneity in thinking, which is a good thing. There have been several research reports which indicate that women think differently than men, and bring more empathy and intuition to leadership.

23

The consideration that logistics industry is not meant for women is contentious as much as there is a growing recognition that there is a need for diversity at the senior management level in every industry. At Rhenus India we have a special recognition and award conferred on our women employees every year on our Founders Day for their contribution to the organization.   5.What is the male-female ratio in your organization? How many females are employed with Rhenus? Our Team in India currently consists of 10% women members and we endeavor for an ideal composition of 33% women colleagues in the years to come. We encourage women to take larger roles within the Management and lead various teams in successful completion of projects on hand. 'For a successful supply chain, service providers need to understand the needs and expectations of their customer's customer' 6.Rhenus has a wide clientele, name few issues that Logistics companies face while dealing with clients. In the present situation there is a lack of continuous engagement at the strategical and tactical level between the customer and logistics service providers. Most of the engagement takes place at an operational level which doesn't enable any major investments on a long term basis and thereby not adding value to the entire Supply Chain. Most of the discussions revolve around commercials and how to lower direct costs. There is a lack of understanding at both the service provider and the service users' end on building long term efficient solutions. 'We need to spend more in terms of investments to save more.' In most cases the service providers are not even aware of the expectations of their immediate customers while for a

For a successful supply chain, service providers need to understand the needs and expectations of their customer's customer. successful supply chain, service providers need to understand the needs and expectations of their customer's customer. There is an immediate need to evolve from vendor based relationships to Partnerships with Logistics Service Providers (LSP) to invest and create efficient solutions by investing into the logistics needs. LSP need to be aware of the expectations and deliverables and commitments that need to be adhered to achieve the goals set by the organization. From our experience we can say that we need to spend more in terms of investments to save more. There has to be ZERO TOLERANCE when it comes to EHS norms 7.How can clients smoothen or enhance their experience with Logistics companies? Referring to 'spend more to save more', any Industry, be it Chemical or Petro Chemical or Automotive, requires investments from a long term perspective. In India, most things get driven when the government introduces a law and it's not by choice. The MNC's are bringing about a change in this culture and the mind-set. There is a need to invest in specific types of trucks, warehouses and material handling equipment, IT Systems, training etc. This can be achieved only with a long term view. At Rhenus we have invested heavily into infrastructure and fleet. There has to be ZERO TOLERANCE when it comes to EHS norms and there is a need of collaborative approach while building a world class supply chain. 'The customer needs to identify the Right Partner and not a vendor.'

logistics reckoner i may, 2016

We need to spend more in terms of investments to save more. There has to be ZERO TOLERANCE when it comes to EHS norms Rhenus India believes in partnering with their customers, getting involved at the strategic level and making prudent investments. Rhenus has invested heavily in trucks for large companies in India. About 100 trucks have been inducted to the fleet in the last one year to meet such long term requirements of the customer from the Chemical industry. In India, we have a country within a country scenario and have various complexities related to manufacturing, storage and distribution hence every solution given to the customer has to be customized. The customer needs to identify the Right Partner and not a vendor. Partnerships should be forged with openness and transparency. Progress should be monitored through clearly defined SLA's and KPI's. Efficiencies have to be created in the system to lower the 'per unit cost' on a continuous basis. IT integration of the systems at both ends lead to maximum benefit and help in have achieving the maximum efficiencies.

interview

Collaborative and Integrated Logistics is the future. 8.Logistics Industry is still seen as an 'unorganized' industry. How can we all contribute to eradicate this tag? The Logistics industry is very fragmented in India and there is not a single player who can claim of even 1% of the market share today. The service taker has a tendency to award the business / contract to the 'so called' logistics player not on the merits like infrastructure, technology and other capabilities; the business is awarded purely on the basis of relationship. This encourages the 'logistics players' to maintain status quo and not develop and upgrade their capabilities and operate on the old school of thought, thus providing a set-back to the entire logistics industry. 'Collaborative and Integrated Logistics is the future.' Along with the relationship, the service taker should also take cognizance of the competence of the Logistics Service Provider from various aspects like technology, capability, infrastructure and EHS norms to name a few. This will encourage the new and existing players to get organized and professional. Collaborative and Integrated Logistics is the future, where the Logistics Service Provider should be willing to invest in the requirements of a particular industry needing a cumulative assurance from the Industry to arrive at a decent ROI. This can only be achieved when all manufacturers make commitments with their business for such an investment. The Service Providers must be involved at the strategic level to

25

understand the present and future needs of the customer. 9.What type of technologies do you use? How important is technology for logistics? Technology will be one of the key differentiators in the logistics space. The USP of Rhenus India is People, IT and HSSEQ (Health Safety Security Environment and Quality). We believe in investing in all three on a continuous basis. For our contract logistics business, we have a Warehouse Management System including barcoding and latest equipment's in all our warehouses. We have an E-Fleet Management system and a Track and Trace Module to closely track and monitor the movement of our fleet. All our vehicles are GPS mounted. The technology that we use in our Customs Brokerage business gives us direct EDI connectivity with our customers. We have a global system for accounting and operational processes for our international freight business. We also have a strong CRM system for sales and pipeline management. 10.Please share your plans for expansion in near future. We plan to grow both organically and also are weighing the option of inorganic growth. We launched the Hi Tech Logistics vertical in India last year and are working on the same aggressively. This vertical deals with logistics of Hi-End electronic equipment in the medical, banking and IT industry and installing hi tech medical devices like X-Ray Machine and CT Scanners. We operate on the plug and play model for equipment. For this specialized business, which is a large sized business in Europe, we have recruited engineers who have been trained in Europe for the last two years and are now ready for the Indian market. In the second phase of expansion, we will be looking at Hospital Logistics.

Tell us something about your journey so far: We have been in Salt production from last 40 years. In 1993, we realized the need of Refined and hygienic salt in our country and that led us to setting up 'Ankur Chemfood ltd' which engages in manufacturing, marketing and export of Edible & Industrial grade refined salt. We have been increasing production capacity, exploring new market, adding specialized products which help us to reach at level of World's Leading Refined Salt producer. We are growing in every aspect of business like business volume, brand value, exploring new products and packaging, developing back to back integration. Today we are world's leading refined salt producer with production capacity of more than 3000 MT per day. Apart from volumes, we are backed with strong brand value. We are world's leading refined salt producer with production capacity of more than 3000 MT per day

Ashok Parakh

Managing Director- Ankur Chemfood Ltd

What do you think was the turning point (biggest decision) of your life? 4 years ago salt industry was going through a bad phase, and everyone said that it is better to wait for this phase to end rather taking steps to fight this. In such alarming scenario, we decided to be more aggressive for better penetration of market. We chose aggressive marketing strategies, focusing on innovative packaging which helped us to sustain, and even grew significantly. What is your motto in life? :Like any other responsible human being, I want to be a 'GIVER' to our society. Our society gives us so much, and I want to give back to society,\][p as we should not conclude our life as Taker. At the time of independence, India used to import salt from U.K, and at present India is the third largest salt producer of the world. What led to this spectacular growth of salt industry in India? Yes, it is really a matter of pride for our

nation. Prime reason for such a spectacular historical growth was the initiative taken by our Father of nation 'Shree Mahtama Gandhi'. We treat Salt as an auspicious item as it is symbol of faith and loyalty. There are nearly 11799 salt manufacturers in India, what does it take to reach at the top of this industry? Our single motto was to develop our own brand rather than working for others. As we are pioneer of this industry, so we are fortunate to have a good channel network which is the key to our success. We look forward to subsidized railway rake and costal ocean freight for edible salt. What do you feel about rules and regulations of working in India? Any law you feel should be amended? We feel that government should support this industry in terms of logistic support as we look forward to subsidized Railway rake and costal ocean freight for Edible Salt. Low value commodity like salt mainly depends on logistic support. What are your expectations for financial year 2016-17? Why? In terms of our finances, we are expecting to close this year with significant growth as compare to last year. A warehouse should be nicely covered to take care for moisture, as salt is a hydroscopic nature substance. What type of warehouses do you use? Do you use third party warehouses as well? What do you look for in a warehouse? We have our warehouse storage capacity of 50,000 MT at manufacturing side. We have warehouses at mostly all major cities of India. For us , a warehouse should have an adequate space for loading and unloading and should be nicely covered to take care for moisture, as salt is a hydroscopic nature substance.

What is your take on GST implementation? How can the best of this implementation be squeezed, according to you? While GST implementation is envisaged at easing the overall tax barriers within the country, it will effectively put back the onus on the supply chain managers, to design a 'lean mean' distribution network based primarily on catering to end customer requirements: what was perceived as a quick fix regulatory change is fast becoming a true supply chain puzzle.

One on one with

Vikram Mansukhani Head 3PL, DIESL

After a brief stint as the Chief Operating Officer at Deccan 360, Vikram joined DIESL as the National Head of Operations where he contributed immensely in improving operational processes and KPIs, and established connect with DIESL’s key customers through appreciable standards of customer service. He has been keenly engaged in profit center management, service quality, industrial engineering, gateway operations and network and distribution optimization. In his present role as Head 3PLS, Vikram oversees Business Strategy, Sales, Marketing and Communication, and Business Excellence.

Let's read ahead to know what Vikram thinks about the industry and what are the important pointers to keep in mind. Last year, DIESL was chosen as winner during an industry meet, how did it feel and what has made the company stay ahead and robust? Getting an award always motivates you to strive harder as it is an appreciation for countless hours of effort under fairly difficult operating conditions and ever growing customer expectations. What allowed us to get the award was an unflinching resolve to meet customers' KPIs without adding to costs, in a transparent manner and with a focus on a sustainable future.

What is India's status in the global logistics market? What are the major factors to be kept in mind to maintain a steady growth while applying innovative approaches? The Indian economy has gone through a complete metamorphosis in terms of volume growth, speed to market and customer expectations. However, infrastructure improvements have not kept abreast. Versus the global markets, India's spend as a percentage of revenue is almost double and to change this, the entire supplychain would need to transform and not only the warehousing and transportation piece. A stable future through innovation must keep in mind sustainable growth versus short term disruption. Kindly share your success mantra for the 3PL service providers out there and the user industries. Keep it transparent and objective. A 3PL can only succeed if the customer's supply chain improves and in turn the customer allows 3PL to actually run the operations. DIESL has been participating at major industry events. Do you think these platforms and exhibitions provide a value add and why? These platforms allow a ready convergence of thoughts and ideas to mix with domain knowledge and hard experience resulting by and large in an educated decision.

Anshul enjoys the art of salesmanship and believes it to be his primary passion. India Logistics Expo representation recently caught up with Anshul in a conversation about the recent projects by Embassy and what are his views in the recent warehousing play. At the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2015, Embassy announced an upcoming project on Warehousing Park. Would you tell us the progress on it and what is thought process behind it? What has been the motivation? In October 2015, we announced the formation of Embassy Industrial Parks a US $250 million joint venture between the Embassy Group and Warburg Pincus. Embassy Industrial Parks is hoping to build 15 to 20 million sq ft of industrial and warehousing space over the next 5 years across India. This includes the development of an industrial park in Tamil Nadu with a projected total investment of Rs 900 crores. We are currently actively pursuing a number of strategic

land acquisitions to position ourselves to become a truly integrated nationwide player. The lack of organization in the sector and a spike in demand for modern Grade A warehousing which we expect to see touch 125 million sq ft over the next few years are major drivers behind our entry into the segment. With the ever-growing e-Commerce market, logistics has become all the more important and challenging. What do you think is the most important thing to keep in mind? What are the opportunities? I think supply chain efficiency is going to become the single biggest differentiator in the e-Commerce space as organizations strive to make same day delivery a cost effective reality. Modern warehousing facilities that allow for consolidation of distribution hubs will be a vital component in making this a reality. While the advent of GST will lead to more consolidation in the warehousing sector that should provide the ideal platform for the emergence of large scale nationwide players.

What are the challenges for Embassy Industrial Parks in the near future? How do you plan to combat those? In a highly price sensitive market, acceptance of the premium required to operate out of modern Grade A spaces could be seen as a challenge initially. However when companies realize the lifecycle benefits in terms of long term costs and operational efficiency we feel confident that there will be a significant upshift in demand for such space. There are many exhibitions on logistics and warehousing. Do you feel they are an integral part of the industry and they are an important platform? Large well organized events are going to be integral channels for buyers and suppliers to meet. Just like we feel that the sector is ready for more organization and consolidation, the events themselves will evolve into a select number of can't miss occasions for networking and insights into industry trends.

Executive coaching is undoubtedly beneficial, but on the same time it is expensive and time-consuming. It should be reserved for people who are critical to your organization's success, or will be in the future. 2. Is the executive able, and willing to work with a coach? As they say, change comes within. Executive has got to want to change. One should go for coaching when he wants to change but finds himself directionless. 3. Cover story

It is unfortunate that 10 of the 15 cities on the most-polluted list are located in India. That is a whopping 66 percent! It is surprising that none of the 15 cities on the list are located in China, which is also considered to be one of the most polluted countries in the world. It is worth pointing out that the top-15 list measures cities with the greatest level of particulate pollution, which is not the same thing as emissions of carbon dioxide, the primary driver of climate change. However, it is important to note, however, that particulate pollution is not a key contributor to climate change. Rising global temperatures are more heavily tied to emissions of another substance -- carbon dioxide.

The transporter has already started identifying sections to run the first of its kind 'time-tabled' freight trains on a pilot basis, starting May-June this year. These time-tabled freight trains, which will reach their destinations in specified time, will initially be for parcel and container traffic on selected routes where there is an opportunity of free passage for a few hours. The IR is looking at running such container trains on the JaipurAhmedabad-Pipav Port and the DelhiMumbai routes. Board Member-Traffic said that 'We believe running of time-tabled freight trains is very much possible. We are in the process of doing some major traffic analysis and are still identifying sections where these trains can be run. Besides, we will also ensure that our market share is retained in long as well as short-haul freight traffic. With this objective, we already have introduced a lot of freight rationalising and incentive schemes like: removing the existing 10% port congestion surcharge, reduced tariffs for the 'merry-go-round' scheme; due to which Singareni Collieries has committed to transport an additional 3-4 mt of additional traffic.' He added that 'We have also opened the container segment to all traffic barring coal and certain specified minerals. Also, unloading of domestic container traffic to all railway good sheds where freight movement is less has been made possible.

Anil Devli, CEO, Indian National Shipowners' Association, said that despite the BDI going up, bulk operators are still not making money to take care of their operational expenses.

'I am an optimist as the low BDI in February had put many jobs under threat and companies may have shut down if it had persisted. Today that fear has been alleviated to a certain extent and helped shipping companies to stay afloat,' he said. Devli said that the surge in demand for commodities and consequent increase in freight is also aiding the improvement in the Baltic Dry Index. Over the last quarter, cumulatively 943 vessels were scrapped. This brought some stability to the supply-demand equation in the market. Ships availability reduced slowly, resulting in demand for a certain class of ships. He said that there are fewer orders for construction of bulk carriers.

If Cochin Shipyard-Samsung wins the tender, the consortium is expected to secure orders for three ships, each cost around INR 1,500 crore. Under the MoU, Samsung Heavy Industries would receive around INR 2,656 crore (USD 400 million) for collaborating with Cochin Shipyard. Three of the ships must be built locally and Cochin Shipyard is the only Indian yard to meet GAIL's criteria. Cochin would supply the manpower and dock, while Samsung would advise on shipbuilding technology and equipment procurement. Last year Cochin Shipyard had striken a deal with Samsung Heavy Industries to cooperate in construction of the vessels. It has also been licensed by GTT of France to build LNG carriers with the Mark III membrane containment system. CSL spokesperson, the MoU for collaboration has been signed and the consortium will build the LNG ships for GAIL. The function was attended by officials of Cochin Shipyard and Samsung.' Under the tender terms, the carriers ordered at overseas yards will have to be built and delivered between January 1 and May 31, 2019 and those from Indian yards delivered between 1 July, 2022 and 30 June, 2023. The six LNG carriers built at overseas yards will therefore be hired by GAIL for 19.5 years and the three tankers constructed in India for 16 years. All carriers will be operated by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). GAIL has tied up 5.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG from the US which the newly built ships will ferry. South Korea's largest shipbuilder, Hyundai Heavy Industries, had initially teamed with Indian engineering and construction firm Larsen and Toubro, which later withdrew from the tender.

Private participation likely in modernization of state-run ports The Shipping Ministry is looking at 'modernising' state-run sea ports with private sector support as a first step, circumventing opposition to its plan for

port 'corporatisation'. Official sources said that the proposal is still at the boardroom level as the Ministry is yet to decide how it wants to go about it, or which ports it wants to initiate the process with. Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping said that 'We are considering a proposal to modernise sea ports and not corporatise them.'

Manohar Parrikar says: Defence Ministry will assist in growth of Shipping Sector

Maersk to Increase Asia-Europe Freight Rates

The public debate on the issue of port 'corporatisation' started when Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had proposed in Budget 2016 that ports would be encouraged to corporatise, and become companies under the Companies Act in order to attract investments for infrastructure development. However, following criticism from port labour unions, Jaitley tweaked the proposal in Budget 2017 and announced that the government had 'started a series of measures to modernise ports and increase their efficiency'. Gadkari said the objective is to ensure that state-run sea ports become more competitive and efficient. Experts who track the infrastructure sector said handling employees will be critical in plans for modernisation with public-privatepartnership (PPP).

The world's largest container shipping company Maersk Line, owned by A.P. Moller-Maersk, plans to increase freight rates for transporting containers from Asia to Northern Europe by USD 550 per 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) from May 1, it said on Tuesday. The industry has been grappling with overcapacity and freight rates for shipping containers on the key route have plummeted 78% this year to a level widely widely seen as loss-making. Maersk Line also aims to raise freight rates from Asia to some ports in Central America and South America's west coast by USD 1,050 per TEU from May 15.

Union Minister for Defence Manohar Parrikar said that India's shipping sector is all set to grow manifold in years to come and Ministry of Defence will ensure that the Shipping sector of the Country gets the necessary assistance in growth. Parrikar was speaking at a session on Shipbuilding, Ship Repair and Ship Breaking at the Maritime India Summit 2016. He said that the maritime sector is crucial from the defence point of view. He said that the Defence Ministry is process to sign MoU with Shipping Ministry to device ways to help ship yards in the Country. Parrikar said that 'Till now, the Defence Ministry did not rope in the shipping sector in defence projects, since the orders could not be met in time due to financial constraints of shipping sector. The main objective of the MoU is to ensure that defence orders given to private shipyards are met in time.' With new approach, the Defence Ministry will be instrumental in generating millions of jobs in the maritime sector over next couple of years. He said that Government is proactively working to exploit the vast coast line having infinite opportunities. Ship repair is one of the focus areas, wherein Defence Ministry is willing to outsource naval repairs to help in growth, Parrikar added.

Yet another Slump in the Indian Export MERCHANDISE TRADE EXPORTS & IMPORTS : (US $ Million) (PROVISIONAL)

We, Logistics Reckoner, have been keeping a close eye on the falling export and the situation has gone beyond the warning levels. With over one year of falling export on the trot, we have to announce yet another fluctuation in the Indian Export. Export last month, (March 2016) was reported at around US$ 22718 million which is US$ 24,032 million; 5.47 lower compared to export of March 2015. However, this number has increased if we focus on amount in Rupees. In our currency, the export in March 2015 were Rs.150082 which raised to Rs.152264. This is actually because of the changed value of US dollar. In March 2015, 1 dollar was valued around Rs. 62; but in March 2016, dollar is valued at nearly Rs.66. Cumulative value of exports for the period April-March 2015-16 was US$ 261136.80 million (Rs.1708841.43 crore) as against US$ 310338.47 million (Rs.1896348.40 crore) registering a negative growth of 15.85 per cent in Dollar terms and 9.89 per cent in Rupee terms over the same period last year. Non-petroleum exports in March 2016 are valued at US$ 20639.78 million against US$ 21386.48 million in March 2015, a reduction of 3.49 per cent. Nonpetroleum exports during April to March 2016 are valued at US$ 231952.95 million as compared to US$ 253544.33 million for the corresponding period in 2015, a reduction of 8.52 per cent. The trend of falling exports is in tandem with other major world economies. The growth in exports have fallen for USA (10.81 per cent), European Union (7.40 per cent), China (11.37 per cent) and Japan (12.85 per cent) for January 2016 over the corresponding period previous year as per WTO statistics.

Steps to beat the inefficiencies in Road Transport

With a Single Unified GST across India, logistics and distribution costs could go down by almost a tenth. This will be a direct result of consolidation of stockyards and creation of hubs in arterial locations, rather than having to develop stockages in every state due to differing tax regimes.

the country.

In my previous article, I highlighted the issues related to inefficiencies in the Road Transport Eco-system. In this article I will focus on ways to ensure a strong and robust road transport system.

Steps towards a Robust Road Transport Ecosystem 1) Prudent & Pragmatic Policy Initiatives by the Government To augment capacity and service speeds significantly. Archaic laws, regressive rules, regulations and policies must be done away with and out of box solutions be implemented in consonance with Road Transport Sector. l Revision of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): With advance technology vehicles in the industry the age old prescribed GVW be revised so that capacity of the rolling stock is augmented. l The notion of 'end of life of vehicle' capping at 15 years will render the road operations economically unviable. There is no scientific study which correlates age of vehicles with emissions which depends upon the Quality of Fuel or the Condition of Engine. Why not only the engine is retrofitted instead of scrapping the whole truck body, which does not emit any fumes?

2) Industry Status to Road Transport Sector The government may consider according to the industry status for road transportation so that transporters can avail the benefits of being part of an industry. Lack of it makes it difficult for transporters to raise capital and debt through organized banking and financial channels.

Barrier Free Seamless Movement of the Vehicles across the Country: Make Barrier Free India – ALL CHECKPOSTS & TOLL PLAZAS BE REMOVED Average truck speed is approximately 50% lower than the global average. According to EOS Intelligence, truck delays currently average five-to-seven

65

hours at interstate checkpoints. A 2008 study report IIM-C provides startling fact of exorbitant loss to Indian Economy due to delays at Toll Plazas and Check Posts pegged at Rs. 87,000 crores annually, if we extrapolate it as of now it would be around 1 lac crore. Huge amount of Diesel and precious foreign exchange spent to purchase crude oil is wasted because of this regressive policy. The industry is ready to pay Toll as 'Shadow Tolling' over and above Road Tax, National Permit Fees, Rs 6/- Cess on Diesel and Petrol and Entry Fees charged by the States.

4) USE OF TECHNOLOGY & E – GOVERNANCE The integration of GPS, GIS and ICT into transportation services and vehicle technologies is fostering a steadily closer conversation and interface between vehicles, infrastructure and people. These technologies and services are termed ITS or Intelligent Transportation Systems and are helping governments and agencies around the world to better mine data, plan, maintain and improve mobility services with the aim to reduce congestion and pollution.

Simplified Taxation: Multiple Taxation and cumbersome procedures for it compliance is also taking a toll of this sector. Tax regime must be centrally managed and uniformly implemented across

''ABOLISHING TRANSIT PASS REGIME Currently, each of India's 29 states taxes goods that move across their borders at different rates. As a result, freight that moves across the country is taxed multiple times. Worse, there are long delays at inter-state checkpoints, as state authorities review and examine freight and apply the relevant taxes and other levies. Truck delays average five-to-seven hours at inter-state checkpoints. This, combined with other delays, keep trucks from moving during 60% of the entire transit time. With a Single Unified GST across India, logistics and distribution costs could go down by almost a tenth. This will be a direct result of consolidation of stockyards and creation of hubs in arterial locations, rather than having to develop stockages in every state due to differing tax regimes.

Promoting & Incentivizing Multimodal Transport System: Multi-modal transportation involving rail and road that not only reduce transportation costs through economies of scale, but that also saves precious fuel may be encouraged, where the last mile connectivity would be provided by road.

INADEQUATE PARKING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES: There is utter lack of basic wayside amenities like secured parking lots, laybyes, drinking water, toilet blocks, hygienic food joints, rest rooms, etc even though it is one of the major obligation in the Model Concessionaire Agreement. We intend to develop Truck Terminal for the truckers, transporters, agents, goods owners etc. with needful infrastructure. 'The eyes of the world are on india, an economic power that is steadily growing in strength and influence. Overcoming its road transportation handicaps and engendering efficiencies in it is vital if the country is to realize Modi Ji's vision.'

Executive Coaching for Results The field of executive coaching is growing at an astonishing rate. Corporations are increasingly turning to coaching as an intervention, as it offers leaders and managers both on-the-job learning and built-in follow-up. Human resource and leadership development practitioners must wade through a wilderness of conflicting information about when to use coaching, how to do it well, and how to evaluate the costeffectiveness and success of any coaching intervention. Executive Coaching for Results helps this critical leadership development technique come of age. This is not a how-to-coach book— there are already plenty of those— but rather a comprehensive guide on how to strategically use coaching to maximize development of talent and link the impact of coaching to bottomline results. Underhill, McAnally, and Koriath draw on their rigorous original research with Fortune 1000 and Global 500 companies such as Dell, Sony, Johnson & Johnson, Disney, Unilever, Wal-Mart, and many others to cover topics like coaching as part of an overall leadership development strategy.

The Air Logistics Handbook Why study air cargo? Consider that this sector moves only 2% of the global volume of goods but a huge 35% by value, reserved for the most costly and time-sensitive products. Air logistics is an economically and strategically important industry, and a rich source of opportunity for graduating students and logistics or SCM professionals. Get a head start in this vital part of your business with this comprehensive and lively overview. It’s the only book available to focus on the role of air freight in the global supply chain. It includes a brief history; the functions of the various players in the industry (forwarders, airlines, airports, government agencies); regulations and restrictions; terrorism management. It details the benefits of air transport, and weighs them against its considerable environmental impact to explore the question of its sustainability. Finally, it considers the future of the industry in a dynamic and increasingly globalised world.

Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Life Cycle Management Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Life Cycle Management: Corporate, Community and Organizational Planning and Preparedness is organized into two thematic sections. Section I defines and classifies hazardous materials and covers the U.S. regulatory framework and standards governing the transport and use of such materials. Section II examines institutional and organizational program elements and provides guidelines for developing these programs to reduce liability and risk while lowering point-source pollution and total hazardous waste production. The logistics approach to hazardous materials yields exponential benefits in costs and the reduction or elimination of such materials. It limits organizational liability and, at the same time, reduces the costs associated with hazardous waste management and disposal. This book serves as an integrative reference offering a better understanding of hazardous materials use, life cycle management, consumption, and waste reduction at a holistic, strategic level.
