EDITOR’S TALK Hard to Live in the City My dull life revolves in a square room with the same old schedule, same old menu from the same convenience store.

Even though songs from the radio occasionally perk up my days, it’s not something that a 9 to 5 white collar like me looks forward to.

On the floor lay travel books stacked up in big piles inviting me to dust them up once again. As the pages turn, I can hear my heart asking the question, ‘Where to this time?’ Soon enough, the answer jumps right out of a page, “The rougher the road, the more memorable the journey becomes.” After reading that faithful sentence, it’s obvious the final destination couldn’t possibly be the usual popular places people often go to. This time, my adventure will start with a small town embraced by misty sea of fog hidden away in a valley far from civilization. As my cool ride casually climbed the hillside, sounds of the breeze whispered through the windows and softly caress my face and hair. It was a peaceful moment and my gaze was fixed on the shady trees along both sides of the road. My journey continued onward accompanied by swaying fields of grass highlighted by the afternoon sun. My heart took flight and I could hardly contain my excitement. Anticipation grew with each kilometer closer to my new destination.

On a bright Thursday morning, we began our trip to the farthest end of the Malaya Penninsula. There, lays a small island named Singapore. To personally express our well wishes, we traveled by Silk Air to this dynamic island to say Happy Birthday by invitation as extended by the Singapore Tourism Board and Silk Air. All 4 of us representing the press started our relaxing journey by Silk Air and received impeccable service including comfortable seats, great food and excellent entertainment with Silk Air Studio providing movies and music for about 3 hours. We were later joined by 4 more members of the press from Bangkok. So, a total of 8 lives plus our guide Ms. Josephine and Khru Tee were good to go.

The first impressive scene that meets the eyes in Singapore is the lovely trees shading the city with its cool shades. It’s a harmonious blending between nature and city keeping the balance between man and nature. The highlight of our Singapore visit is the night life but it’s not the common bar scene that we seek. We’re going to take you to two spectacular events the RiverHongbao festival and Chingay Parade marking Singapore’s 50th Independence celebration.

River Hongbao is an annual festival that began in1986 revealing the beauty of gigantic lanterns that reflect traditional Chinese wisdom and their ancient culture to the rest of the world.

Visitors can enjoy various games and interesting performances including the famous Chinese Opera. The event is appropriately

シンガポールのお誕生日 気持ちよく晴れたある木曜の朝、僕たちは空港へやってきた。目指すはマ レー半島最南端の小さな島、シンガポール。シンガポール観光協会とシルク エアの招きで、シンガポールにハッピーバースデーを伝えるためだ。僕たち 4人は、チェンマイからシルクエアの快適なサービスで現地へ、最上級の歓 迎とおもてなしを受けた。座席も広く、料理も秀逸、また、シルクエア･スタ ジオ･サービスでは、映画や音楽鑑賞が楽しめ、3時間の旅はあっという間 だった。空港でバンコクから来た4人と合流、我ら8人をガイドのジョセフさ んと今回の旅の世話役のティーさんが迎えてくれた。 先ず最初にシンガポールで目にしたのは、緑の木々だった。赤道にも近 いこの国で、とても心が落ち着き、心地いい涼しさを感じた。自然と都市が 見事に調和した景観だった。シンガポールを訪れる人々にとってのハイライ トは、華やかに輝く光の夜だろう。もちろん、バーやパブではない。春節の 恒例イベント、ホンバオ川のランタンやチンゲイパレードのことだ。今年はシ ンガポール建国50周年と重なり、盛大なものとなった。 リバーホンバオがシンガポールの公式行事になったのは1986年で、巨大 なランタンがハイライトだ。中国人の伝統工芸技術、文化を魅せてくれる他、 様々なゲームや京劇、ショーが行われる。リバーホンバオは、 マリナ湾付近で 開催される。高層ビルが建つ近代都市を背景に、華やかな中国文化のイベン トが映える夜景の美しさは、 マリナ湾の代名詞となっている。 チンゲイパレードは、盛大で華やかなパレードで観る人を魅了し、興奮の 渦に巻き込んでくれた。そして、ハッピーバースデイのお祝いの言葉のもと打 ち上げられた花火が華を添えた。地元の人と長期滞在している外国人、タイ や日本、韓国、中国、ヨーロッパの国々の人々も合わせ、総勢2万を超える人々 が、自身の文化のルーツを魅せる美しいパレードに参加し、とても感動的な夜 となった。最後には、盛大な花火でフィナーレとなり、参加者それぞれが、感 動を持ち帰った。そして、私たち、ロングステイマガジンも心から、シンガポー ル誕生記念日をお祝いしたい。おめでとう、シンガポール。

Chakrapong Pansuwan Volunteer of Wat Pathumwanaram class 1 “It was a humble beginning. We started out small several years ago working with Saeng Tawan Fund which focused on education organization welfare managed by the temple. It was then that we looked at Wat Pathumwanaram in a different perspective.”

Pathom Yuenyong Volunteer of Wat Pathumwanaram Class 2 “I first became associated Wat Pathumwanaram as a novice and went on to work as a volunteer. The first thing I had to cope with was the fact that most adults found it hard to accept the fact that children can accomplish big things for the greater good with the ability to make an impact on society without expecting any business returns as incentives. This is the main reason why it is difficult to motivate people to help. It made it difficult to find more volunteers to support our cause. Still, it was better than doing nothing at all.”

Siwakorn Thaisakorn Volunteer of Wat Pathumwanaram Class 4 “The experience does change things like working habits, speech patterns and virtues. It’s a peaceful feeling of working without stress. It’s charity work so the intention is pure leaving a feeling of satisfaction with no pressure to achieve more than you can handle”.

Rasaya Wonsuthin Volunteer of Wat Pathumwanaram Class 3 “We create several different forms of media so the teaching of Buddhism will reach more teens. We made our very first short film. Ordinarily, when a movie is made, there would be lots of freedom but that’s not the case for us. We have a frame that we need to follow in order to reach certain goals. It’s bigger than just doing it for the fun of it. The process gives you practice in using your craft and the opportunity to work with others.”

Rapat Bantuwanit Volunteer of Wat Pathumwanaram Class 4 “My older brother participated in this project in the past. I followed him to work one day and it wasn’t long before I followed his footsteps after I had tried it out for just one day. Something made me want to go back and I know I did the right thing. Ever since I started to do volunteer work, people around me began to change; mom began to pray more, dad was calmer and I changed the way I think. I don’t do it for the sake of personal gratification, wealth or fame”.

Wongwarit Ariyawat (The Phantom Band) “In light of Buddhajanti: The Celebration of 2,600 Years of the Buddha’s Enlightenment), I composed a song based on verses from Rama VI to celebrate this auspicious occasion. Most jobs we do it for the money or fame but for religious purpose, it’s different. The degree of difficulty is all the same but the challenge lies within our soul; how do we keep it pure so the listener will be focused and enlightenment in Buddhism.”

Supichan Rochwanit Graphic Designer, Volunteer Designer “In the beginning, it still felt like a job normally doing what had to be done like going to companies and introducing your work.

That changed from normally approaching companies to walking to a temple and becoming more familiar and comfortable talking with monks instead. I could feel there was difference because suddenly I was surrounded by good people with pure intentions.”

Siwakorn Thaisakorn also added, “If we didn’t have this, things would be worse than what they are today.”

It was weekend of festive celebration on March 7-8, 2015 where all the champions of Singha Amateur Golf Circuit 2014 were invited to celebrate their victory in Santiburi Samui during the period of two days and one night.

Every champion from eight golf clubs around Thailand was invited to play two days of competition with top Asian professional players and their managers from where they had won the game from. The experience was marvelous right from the start with the airport greet and meet, continuous great hospitality, the toughest challenging golf course I had ever played in Asia, a stunning view and a breathtaking lay out. We felt like one big happy family under Singha umbrella so warm and kind with genuine sincerity!

The first day ended with impressive seafood and steak dinner buffet on the beach where everyone equally enjoyed live music. I too was invited and thoroughly pleased to see that Sport Management Group (SMG) has done a superb job hosting us throughout the weekend giving us great memory that we will never forget for a long, long time.

Black-throated Tit Aegithalosconcinnus ズアカエナガ Behavior: This tiny passerine with a total length of 11 cm., has a black throat and a black ‘bandit mask’ around the eyes much like that of the Lone Ranger. Evenly distributed from west to east Pakistan, northeast Himalayas, Indochina across southern China, and Taiwan. It lives in open broadleaf forest above 915-2,600m. sea level, as well as pine forest, generally found in mid altitudes. In Thailand it is a local bird that inhabits the evergreen forests above the sea level of 1,500m or more in the northern region.

The black-throated is highly communal and will travel in large flocks sometimes up to 40 birds. The bird likes to eat small insects and spiders, as well as small seeds, fruits and berries (particularly raspberries). Group numbers swell during the non-breeding season, but smaller groups exist year round. These groups will often join mixed-species feeding flocks. The nest is constructed out of moss and lichen and hangs from the branches of trees.

I had been on many holidays to Thailand and really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere plus the food is fantastic.

How long have you been staying in Thailand?

About 2 years.

Can you tell us about your longstay life in Thailand?

I like staying in Thailand very much. Thai people always make you feel very welcome, and it is a very progressive country with an increasing quality in its infrastructure. Cellphones, internet, cable, good quality accommodation, food, and health & fitness are at least on the same level as western countries, perhaps even greater in some cases. With all the wonderful tourist attractions, there is also a very local & homely “feel” to Thailand and you really get the best of both worlds.

Are there any drawbacks for longstay in Thailand?

For me there aren’t many problems, but it depends on the person.

Sometimes it is too relaxed here and it makes me lazy.

Any advice you’d like to give to foreigners staying in Thailand?

Use social networking to make friends from your country or a similar culture, so that when you miss home you have someone to talk to.

Don’t drive in Thailand without a Thai driving license, always wear a helmet and never drive drunk. Try to learn basic Thai; it is hard to get all the benefits of Thailand without being able to interact with all Thai people, even with something basic like ordering food on the street, as vendors don’t often speak English. Travelling domestically in Thailand is very cheap (sometimes 500b to fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, or to the southern islands), take advantage of this Thailand has many wonderful places to visit and very reasonably priced. Most importantly: plan a budget, and follow the visa rules!

タイ滞在で困ったことはありますか？ 私自身はありませんが個人差があるのではないでしょうか。強いて問 題と言えばリラックスしすぎて怠け者になりそうです。

タイにいる外国人に何かアドバイスはありますか？ ソーシャルネットワークを使って同じ国出身の友達や近い文化圏の 友人を作れば相談もでき寂しくありません。それからタイの運転免許 証がないのに車を運転しないこと。ヘルメットをかぶること。飲酒運 転は厳禁です。基本的なタイ語を学べばタイ人と交流しながらタイの 良いところが吸収できます。屋台で英語が通じないこともありますか ら、食べ物を注文することから始めてみてはいかがですか。国内の移 動費は、例えばチェンマイからバンコクのフライトが５００バーツの時 もあり、とてもリーズナブルです。これを使わない手はありません。タ イ国内には魅力的な観光地が沢山あります。予算は計画的に、ビザの ルールを守って滞在しましょう。

［概要］寺の位置と付近の様子をWikimapiaのサイトを引用して示 す。Wat Saen Muang Ma Luang （旧名 Wat Hua Kuangは、城 壁に守られたチェンマイ旧市街の歴史的中心にある。寺は最近、 広範囲に修繕された。WihanとUbosotは壊されて新規に建立され た。経蔵も最近造られた。寺への行き方はWikimapiaの地図で代用 する。ターペー門とプラシン寺を結ぶラチャダムヌン道路の北に は旧王宮関連の施設が集っている。旧王宮は女性刑務所の位置に あった。何故そんなことに？「ランナーの栄光が蘇らないように との呪詛」、という説がある。 ［紹介］このシリーズは観光案内ではない。それに叶う実力がな いことは承知しているが、文化人類学の記述として通用するもの を目標としている。寺に歴史や文化の方向から光を当てることが 目標である。詳細なデータは手許にあるが、紹介する紙幅がな い。興味深い項目を一行記載することで、ご容赦いただきたい。 (1) 寺名：多くの資料に旧名Wat Saenmuangma、後Wat Hua Khuang、（都の頭の広場）になったとあるが、それらより古い 寺名（Wat Lakhapurakamaram）もある。 (2) 1800年代末期に作成された信頼できる詳細地図には、Suan Dok門のそばにWat Saenmuangma、白象門のそばにWat Hua Khuangと記してある。資料がないので、2寺の関係や異同など の経緯は分からない。(3) 現在も4ライという広い寺領であるが、 昔は三王像あたりから白象門に到る93ライ（400ｘ400m相当） を有する王室寺院だった（チェンマイ旧市街1600ｘ1600m）。 (4) 建立時期は資料間に齟齬が大きい。チェンマイ大の資料はKing Saenmuangma（ランナー第7代王1385-1401）の治世の建立、仏

塔はKing Muang Keo（ランナー第11代王1495-1525）の治世の 建立と書く。(5) ウボソットの本尊はKing Saenmuangmaと同サ イズと、チェンマイ大の資料は書く。(6) 寺の調査を始めたのは 2004/06。当時の境内には警句を書いた多くの立て札があった が、今は見ない。(7) 仏塔はチェンマイで美しい仏塔のひとつと 言われている。同様式のものに、Wat Phrathat Doi Sthep、Wat Chompuなどの仏塔の他、Wat Saen Tha Hoiの廃仏塔などがあ る。(8) いつ訪れても工事が行われている。すなわち、古い経蔵 を壊して小本堂に建替え、別の場所に経蔵を建てたりしている。 つねに新しいものが加わっているので古い資料は役に立たない。 多少の情報を付記する。上記したように、いつ訪れてもこの寺は 改修工事を行っている。以前の境内には、至る所に警句（英文） を記した立て札があった。つぎのものを印象的に憶えている。 『避けられない定め。早朝、あなたは平和に微笑んでいる。午前 半ば、あなたは衰え始める。正午には、もはや誰も手助けできな い。その日の半ば、あなたは元気を回復しようと試みるが空し い。夕べには全ての努力は徒労に終わる。そして、あなたは腐 敗し始める。これを見て、門徒の私は驚いた。これは、浄土真宗 の中興の祖と呼ばれる蓮如の“白骨の御文書”、といわれるもの と瓜二つである。【～されば朝には紅顔ありて、夕には白骨とな れる身なり】どうだろう、寺巡りの醍醐味というのはこんなとこ ろにあるのだ。
