Longview is very close to launching the largest reading initative East Texas has ever seen. In 2018, the goal is to get 50 East Texas schools involved throughout East Texas and 25 East Texas partners to help close the literacy gap. Longview ISD has partnered with the innovative reading company Myon to help its students engage in reading in and out of the classroom. Through this partnership, East Texas Reads has teamed up with Longview Chamber of Commerce, City of Longview, Longview Library, East Texas Literacy Council, and The Boys & Girls Club of The Big Pines to plan the launch of this initiative and roll out a plan to get the city of Longview involved and take the joy of reading beyond the school doors.
OUR GOALS FOR 2018: • Partner with 25 Businesses or Civic Partners to help supply tablets to students who cannot afford them. • Plan monthly reading events outside campuses at civic places. • Expand to 50 campuses outside LISD. • Host Technology Drives for people to donate gently used tablets or phones to give to schools or students who cannot afford them. • Award Classroom, School, and Student of the month according to hours read • Run social campaign with regular literacy tips/awards and can be a hub for potential “Hot Spot” sponsorship advertising.
