Every Child Has Access Today schools are faced with a plethora of challenges from making sure students are fed when they are not on campus, to safety and health concerns, to kids having kids. Creating an environment for students to be successful begins by discovering, understanding, and knowing their critical needs. Based on those critical needs, it then becomes determining pathways that ensure students have the skills necessary to succeed. To solve this complex situation will require convening key stakeholders, creating strategies, leveraging resources, and activating the community. In short: a multi-pronged partnership. True transformation in our education system begins with understanding, and understanding comes from knowing the needs of our student population. The Longview Chamber of Commerce has created an initiative, Every Child Has Access, to bring those partnerships together in order to meet those individually identified needs. Every Child Has Access is a collective impact project that will address the overall wellbeing of students during non-school hours, in an effort to create a continuous environment conducive to learning and health.

Children at the ages of three or four can attend a preschool program. Preschool programs are not day care or baby-sitting. Quality preschool programs focus on teaching early literacy and mathematics, providing opportunities for children to acquire oral language skills and learning to socialize and get along with others. Preschool provides a strong foundation for success in kindergarten and beyond.

It is important to know that each grade level has a specific curriculum that aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). In other words, each child should have a minimum academic knowledge in reading/language arts, science, mathematics, and history-social science, regardless of the school they attend. For example, in mathematics, children in third grade develop an understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100. In reading/language arts, fifth graders are expected to quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Welcome to the early adolescence stage. This development age is particularly difficult, and children at this age require as much attention from adults as during elementary school years. Early adolescents experience physical and emotional changes, and some of them may show less interest in school and their studies and more in social interactions. There is peer pressure to engage in risky behaviors. At this age, it is common for them to become distant from their parents. It is critical for parents to remain supportive, continue to build a close relationship, and communicate effectively with their children.

Launch My Career TX It can be hard for students to know which colleges and majors might be right for them and their goals. They may be asking, “How can what I study help me find a job?” or “How will I be able to achieve my desired lifestyle goals?” They may wonder which majors lead to good job satisfaction and personal fulfillment.

Launch My Career TX helps students select a college degree program that best prepares them for the career and life they want. Using data compiled by College Measures, current and prospective students can learn about the average ROI for different college degree programs compared with earnings for those without a college degree. The tool also illustrates their expected “time to launch” and “breakeven” point given their degree and the type of life they want to live. But it isn’t just about how much you earn. It’s about achieving the life you would like to lead! Launch My Career TX includes Gallup data on graduates’ college and work experiences.

Every Child Has Access Resource Guide

Supported in part by a grant from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Launch My Career TX helps current and prospective students cut through the confusion and find programs of study at public Texas colleges and universities that can lead to well-paying jobs and a good life. Launch My Career TX features information on hot jobs, hot skills, and the return on investment (ROI) that students can expect based on the major and college they choose.

If you are a high school student, parent of one, or a school counselor, visit launchmycareertx.org to get started. For more information on this initiative, go to longviewchamber.com/business/education.
